ST LEGER

An historic day at the races CELEBRATING 250 YEARS OF RACING MEMORIES AND HISTORY AT ST LEGER FESTIVAL. he Friday of this year’s iconic Ladbrokes St Leger Festival is extra special as Doncaster Racecourse celebrates 250 years of the Doncaster Cup with a trip down memory lane. To mark the occasion, an exhibition collated by Simon Mapletoft, will chart the history of the race alongside memories from jockeys, owners, trainers and race-goers. It is sure to delight avid racing enthusiasts who will play their part in its history too as the celebrations take place.

T

Pallastor romps home to win the 2015 Doncaster Cup

“Cecil Boyd-Rochfort made the race his own with seven wins between 1934 and 1963, a record equalled only by his stepson, the late Sir Henry Cecil, who warmed modern-day crowds with the likes of Buckskin (1978) and Le Moss and Ardross in 1982.” 18 Eastside | www.sheffieldvibe.com

WHERE IT ALL STARTED

The race was originally staged ten years before the first running of the world’s oldest Classic – the St Leger – and first took place at Cantley Common from 1766 until it moved to Town Moor in 1776. Originally known as the Doncaster Gold Cup, it forms part of the QUIPCO British Champions’ Series and is the final leg of the prestigious stayers’ Triple Crown. Today, the best thoroughbreds in Britain and Ireland compete over two-and-a-quarter miles to the delight of the packed stands, terraces and lawns as Gentlemen’s Day at the St Leger Festival is in full swing. MAGICAL MOMENTS

Over the years there has been some amazing moments that have stayed in the hearts and minds of many associated with the racing industry. Beeswing takes the crown as the most successful horse at the Doncaster Cup who won the race four times between 1837 and 1842. Jockey-wise it was Joe Mercer who took his tally to eight wins with back-to-back triumphs on the great ‘Le Moss’ in 1979 and 1980. Meanwhile, Cecil Boyd-Rochfort made the race his own with seven wins between 1934 and 1963, a record equalled only by his stepson, the late Sir Henry Cecil, who warmed modern-day crowds with the likes of Buckskin (1978) and Le Moss and Ardross in 1982. However, the most celebrated winner in

the modern era is Mark Johnston’s popular chestnut Double Trigger who is immortalised in a stunning bronze statue adjacent to Doncaster’s main grandstand. His victory in 1995 saw him complete the stayers’ Triple Crown – the Ascot Gold Cup, the Goodwood Cup and, of course, the Doncaster Cup. It certainly holds a special place in the history of Doncaster Racecourse. BE PART OF THE ACTION

To mark this incredible milestone, Doncaster Racecourse has commissioned Sheffield-born silversmith Christopher Perry to create a striking trophy that depicts the historic importance of this race yet symoblises horse racing in a modern era. The gilt trophy pays homage to its origin as the Gold Cup. Its grandiose goblet shape is born from a Yorkshire Rose base that encircles the stem and culminates in a smooth gilt gold circular chalice designed by Christopher and his colleague Christopher Knight, the lead designer and manufacturer of the St. Leger Stakes Perpetual Trophy. Furthermore, a special guest appearance from a British icon – known for his suave, debonair appearance and ostentatious spending to get one up on his friend Del Trotter – will spend the day with race-goers. The man in question is none other than John Challis who played Boycie in the legendary sitcom Only Fools and Horses. In addition to the fantastic race card, 250th anniversary of the Doncaster Cup, celebrity guests and an exhibition, Friday is Gentlemen’s Day. Sponsors Frenchgate Centre will be roaming the course looking for the Best Dressed Gentlemen so it’s important to make sure you look your best gents. There are some great prizes to be had as well as being part of an historic day at the races. To book tickets call 01302 304200 or visit http://www.doncasterracecourse.co.uk/whatson/fixture/ladbrokes-st-leger-festival-gen tlemens-day/

ST LEGER

Third time’s a charm AFTER WINNING THE ST LEGER FOR THE LAST TWO YEARS, ALL EYES WILL BE ON ITALIAN JOCKEY ANDREA ATZENI AT TOWN MOOR THIS YEAR, WRITES ROBERT PLUMBRIDGE. oncaster Racecourse September 2015. Scene of one of the most controversial Classic races in the racing’s history. What looked like an innocuous coming together in the final two furlongs by Simple Verse and joint-favourite Bondi Beach would have far-reaching consequences. Despite being first past the post, Simple Verse’s ‘victory’ was chalked off following a steward’s enquiry. Following the review, Bondi Beach was crowned winner. If that wasn’t enough, the decision was later overturned the following Wednesday following a further review. For Simple Verse jockey Andrea Atzeni, the day could be described as something of a rollercoaster. Speaking after the race, Atzeni commented: “I’m down, still feel low. I felt like going home. I was crying in the stalls but at the end of my day it’s my job. “I’m gutted as I think the best horse won the race. It’s hard but these things happen. I gave the winner a little bump, he leaned on me as much as I did him.” The appeal and subsequent re-overturning of the result meant that Andrea was crowned the winning jockey in the oldest British Classic for the second time in a row. It is currently the only Classic that the young, talented jockey from Italy has won, so holds a special place in his heart. Virtually guaranteed a ride in 2016

D

he would become the first jockey since Lester Piggott in 1972 to win three St Legers on the bounce should he triumph this month. A fate made all the more impressive considering the advanced competitiveness in jockeyship over the past 40 years. Atzeni, unlike other jockeys, was never destined to jump into the saddle. There’s no rich racing heritage in Italy aside from maybe Frankie Dettori, nor was he born from racing stock. Son to his farmer father and dentist mother, Atzeni grew up on the island of Sardinia and began his pursuit of a racing

“Perhaps the biggest challenge Atzeni faces on this journey will be picking the right horse. With a growing reputation as one of the most reliable jockeys on the circuit, Atzeni has a number of trainers who covet his services. This means he’ll have a pick of a few runners on the day.”

career riding ponies on the island before moving to Milan to join trainer Marco Botti. A further move to Newmarket, plus a lot of early mornings and hard work, have brought Andrea to the brink of making history. Perhaps the biggest challenge Atzeni faces on this journey will be picking the right horse. With a growing reputation as one of the most reliable jockeys on the circuit, Atzeni has a number of trainers who covet his services. This means he’ll have a pick of a few runners on the day. Trainer Roger Varian, who gave Atzeni his first Leger win with Kingston Hill in 2014,

has two major entries with Corinthian and the promising Nezwaah entered. Ten months ago Atzeni became jockey for Sheikh Mohammed Obaid, whose horses have now been moved to Varian, so it is likely his mount will be chosen from that pair. However, he could be enlisted by Sir Michael Stoute, a trainer whose fondness for Azteni is well documented and is sure to run strong-staying Across the Stars in the big one. With the pick of such quality horses, Andrea will be hoping he can avoid controversy and land the hat-trick on the famous Town Moor straight.

TRIP ADVISOR REVIEWS We stayed the night at Rigsby's last night as we were going to see Tom Jones at Doncaster Races. It's perfect if you are going to the races as it's just a short walk so no headaches about trying to get taxis sorted. Tracy, who runs Rigsby's is absolutely lovely and a great hostess. We stayed in the White Room which was huge and decorated nicely in a French shabby chic style. It was lovely and clean with everything you could need. The bed and bedding were soooo comfortable, we had a great night's sleep! Breakfast was delicious and freshly cooked. We even had strawberries from the garden. A great visit, we would certainly go again and highly recommend it. Happybunnyhdb, Leeds Stayed here on business when my usual (chain) hotel was full and would choose it again. Really welcoming, clean and comfortable. Didn't have a cooked breakfast, but lots of lovely stuff in the fridge to help myself to. Clearly a passion and labour of love for Tracy...totally recommend. ST LEGER

Head to head JOCKEY-TURNED-TRAINER JOSEPH O’BRIEN WILL BE PUTTING FAMILY RIVALRIES TO ONE SIDE AT THIS YEAR’S ST LEGER. THERE’S PERHAPS NO GREATER TEST THAN ONE OF BRITAIN’S BEST-LOVED CLASSICS, WRITES ROBERT PLUMBRIDGE.

38 Eastside | www.sheffieldvibe.com

ST LEGER

loodstock is a term synonymous with racing, usually used when discussing the family origins of a horse to determine how it may perform before it has even run a race. Look at any racecard on a course and you will notice that next to each horse there is the name of its mother (Dam) and father (Sire). And in some cases even further back in family history. The importance of how well bred the horse is often shown in how much owners are willing to splash out on one-year-old unraced animals at auction. Some going for over £1million before they’ve ever seen a racecourse! But it’s not just the animals who have family connections in the game it seems. There are numerous father-son stories across the sport. Martin and David Pipe, one of the most famous in the jumps world, along with Ginger and Donald McCain. Or how about Richard Hannon Senior and Junior in the flat? All examples of how love for racing and knowledge have been nurtured over the years. The newest example of this could provide one of the biggest racing dynasties for the next 50 years. This year former jockey Joseph O’Brien, son of Aidan O’Brien, one of the most successful trainers UK and Irish racing has ever seen, has retired from the saddle and become a trainer. Joseph was riding for his father until he made the decision to go fulltime on his own racing operation. “It’s hard enough to make a decent job of one thing never mind trying to juggle two things so I’ll be concentrating on training and

B

Joseph and Aidan O’Brien

Joseph O’Brien – the jockey

won’t be riding any more,” O’Brien told the Racing Post. Success has come quick for the young trainer, aged just 23, as he had a winner on his first outing. He already has an impressive stable, and this year at the Doncaster St Leger he has his first entry in a British Classic race with Arya Tara. Not only will she go up against Group 1 company for the first time, but also against Joseph’s father Aidan’s runners, one of whom, Idaho, is red-hot favourite. This would be a significant moment for the young trainer, the chance to test himself against his father at the highest level of the sport. Joseph is keen to acknowledge the significance of the help from his father, however he stresses that his operation is entirely separate from the colossus of Ballydoyle and Aidan. “This is a 110 per cent separate operation. The staff are my staff. There is no crossover whatsoever. Of course Dad is always there for advice but I can’t remember the last time he came over to see the horses on the gallops. “If I learned one thing from Dad, it was to try and keep things as simple as possible,” he told the Racing Post. Joseph is no stranger to St Leger glory having guided his father’s runner Leading Light to glory in 2013. He’ll be hoping he can defeat his father’s powerful string of horses on Saturday 10 September at one of racing’s great courses. And he’s clearly enjoying being the boss, adding: “I love it and the winning feeling doesn’t differ.” Eastside | www.sheffieldvibe.com 39

Seafood special! RACHEL MARTIN LOVES CRAB – BUT COULD SHE EAT A WHOLE ONE AT CRAB & MOO? rab & Moo is the newest addition to The Racecourse Restaurant Quarter - opposite Doncaster Racecourse and just outside the bustling town centre covering the whole ground floor of The Grand St Leger Hotel. The restaurant was immediately welcoming as we sat enjoying a glass of Ciao Bella in the lounge bar- a combination of peaches, strawberries, Sicilian lemons and cranberry juice, served with Amaretto, vodka, and a splash of lemonade (£5.95) - and waited to be seated. So far I was in my element. Although I do think the beautiful mask of the summer sun had a big part to play in my euphoria. Having undergone a £100,000 full refurbishment, the style of the restaurant could be termed industrial chic - blending heavy duty materials with stylish features to create a contemporary and modern space. The generous menu features appetizers of handmade Thai crab cakes and seafood tian, and such entrees as Tuscan-style grilled tuna and 8oz handmade beef burgers, and the seafood reaches The Crab & Moo chefs within 12 hours of being caught. To start we ordered the Tequila King Prawn Skewers (£7.95) and the Braised Beef Short Ribs (£6.95). I was expecting a modest

C

40 Eastside | www.sheffieldvibe.com

snack. What we got was almost a meal in itself. There were so many prawns, that finishing it was briefly daunting until the first taste and then I found I couldn’t stop. The prawns managed to be sharp, citrusy, hot and fragrant simultaneously and the beef stunningly silky with the right amount of seasoning - just enough to give you a full range of flavours but not enough garlic to blow your head off. Next came the seafood and grill. Like many a lover of seafood, I’m rather mad for crab, much to the delight of restaurant owner John Din, who was eager for us to sample an upcoming addition to the menu – a one kilo stuffed king crab. After spending some time banging and pounding with mallets, it became apparent that there is no polite way to crack open and eat a whole crab, and while they supply a set of picks and nut crackers, as far as I’m concerned, the only way to eat a whole crab is to snap it in two and suck in the wodge of sweet white meet. It was a blissfully primal experience. Inside you get a generous amount of brown and white crab meat and the robust hints of garlic and herbs almost completely masked that ‘fishy’ taste many have difficulty enjoying. The spicy salsa was the perfect texture and

addition to the meat and the lime and chive mayonnaise gave a pleasant after taste. My partner ordered the Smoker Burger (£9.95) - topped with smoked Applewood cheese, crispy, bacon and barbecue sauce which was slightly less adventurous, but equally enjoyable. It had a pleasant kick, thanks to the spicy barbeque sauce, and was cooked so still slightly pink in the middle. For dessert John insisted we try the triple chocolate flake cake (£5.50) as it was to die for - and it did not disappoint. If you're a massive fish fan like me and someone who likes 'a bit of everything' when dining out, the seafood grill is a must-try. But make sure when you do visit, you arrive hungry. Limited 2 Art celebrated relocating to the old Bawtry town hall premises with a lavish open day.

L

imited 2 Art has been a familiar front in Bawtry’s Courtyard for more than a decade but Ruth Worsman always had bigger dreams for her little gallery, she wanted a private viewing room, more space and for Limited 2 Art to become a must visit on the UK’s art trail. Having transformed Bawtry’s Old Town Hall into a stunning new home for Limited 2 Art, the gallery was filled with art admirers from Bawtry and beyond for the official launch, a glittering event hosted by Ruth and her team. Guests enjoyed a champagne reception and live music at the grand opening, but it wasn’t the first time some guests had seen Limited 2 Art’s new home, many had been links in the human chain that Ruth had organised to transport the gallery’s stock into

L-R: Gallery owner Ruth Worsman with her team Sue, Rob, Serena and Lindsey

the new premises. To reward their hard work she allowed them a sneak peek of the gallery before it opened. The new premises is more than four times the size of Limited 2 Art’s previous home at The Courtyard, Ruth worked with designer David Bowling to transform the Old Town Hall into one of the largest independent art galleries in the north of England. She said: “We have taken an old building and put a new one inside, everything inside is new.” Since it was built in 1890 the Old Town Hall building has been home to a car showroom, a working men’s club and more recently a florist. When Ruth got the keys in 2016 she completely refurbished the building, installing a mezzanine level, private viewing room, stock room and a room dedicated to her bespoke framing service. The gallery has exciting plans for regular artist visits, special exhibitions and a bi-annual open art exhibition for local talent to enter, starting in 2017. Ruth’s first visiting artist is Kerry Darlington, an awardwinning 3D resin artist, who had previously visited Limited 2 Art at The Courtyard during her 2014

debut UK tour. She will visit the gallery on 3 September between 12noon and 3pm. Ruth said: “I am thrilled that Kerry has chosen us as the only gallery she will visit during 2016, apart from her annual show in Surrey, and she can be assured of a very warm Yorkshire welcome. “She has a dedicated following who love the warmth and creativity displayed in her work which adorns homes and businesses across the UK.” Over 60 pieces of Kerry’s work will be on display during her visit, commanding the entire ground floor of the new gallery. The display will include some rare and sold out titles as well as originals, which will be available to buy on the day. Visitors will be treated to a champagne reception and will have the opportunity to meet Kerry during her visit. Limited 2 Art plans on hosting regular artist visits including US artist Chris De Rubeis on 22 October and Lincoln artist Edward Waite on 26 November. inding a luxury beauty or hair specialist that you can afford is never easy. Finding both of them under one roof, and in a welcoming high-end atmosphere – almost impossible. | RETAILER OF THE MONTH

www.visitbawtry.com

More than meets the eye The new management team at The Turnpike are clearly off to a flying start, having been chosen as our Retailer of the Month.

H

uge congratulations go to The Turnpike, which has been chosen as Eastside’s Retailer of the Month. The Turnpike in Bawtry is a traditional Yorkshire pub in many ways, with its oldfashioned look, brilliant ales and fantastic Sunday lunches, but there is much more to the business than meets the eye. The pub’s live music events every Thursday night and party atmosphere on Friday and Saturday nights has been a great success with locals and has secured their place on the Bawtry social calendar.

New managers... Charlotte Bentham and Will Monk

Their live music nights have become a brilliant platform for talented, up-and-coming artists, with previous acts including Elliott Morris, an amazing guitarist who is well-known on the folk circuit and who has supported Paul Carrack and Lee Caderousse – who has been compared to the likes of Paul Weller. When it comes to the weekend, the atmosphere is one where you can let your hair down with a few drinks, some old school dance classics and Motown to well and truly celebrate the weekend. Their guest ale of the week, as well as their usual house ale, is also a big draw for pintlovers, giving regulars a reason to return, whilst the pub is keen to expand their wine list to include suppliers from a number of regions. And whilst The Turnpike is keen to keep running the events and offers that regulars and new customers alike enjoy, they are also constantly looking to improve the appearance and ambience of the pub. Now under new management, the team are taking a new approach to the interior decor and are planning changes over the coming months. They are keen to improve the beer garden and are planning on introducing

food from 12pm until 8pm every day of the week, as well as on Sundays. On hearing that The Turnpike had been chosen as Retailer of the Month, manager Charlotte said: “We are thrilled to be recognised for all our efforts and one of the things we are most proud of is our enthusiastic staff who work hard throughout the week – it’s a real testament to the pub that we have staff who genuinely enjoy their jobs and I think that shows. We love our atmosphere and our loyal customers, so thanks!” Whether you just want to pop in for a mid-week drink, go all out at the weekend or go for a Sunday dinner with all the trimmings, Charlotte and her team strike the balance between traditional pub and modern venue. Whilst many of the pub’s features and popular events are here to stay, look out for some positive changes and some exciting announcements over the next couple of months. Don’t put up with Domestic Violence For many people, both men and women, the very place where they should feel safest is precisely where they are in the greatest danger. This is because they are suffering abuse and violence from their partner at home. Too often the victims are afraid to speak out because they are worried either that there is nothing which can be done to help them or that it might make the situation worse if they try to stand up to the abuser. If you are the victim of domestic violence or you are concerned about your safety or the safety of your children, our family and domestic violence solicitors can take fast and effective steps to protect you. What Can the Court do? The family court can make Orders preventing your partner from being violent or abusive towards you or the children, and, if necessary can make an Order removing your partner from the family home and preventing them from coming within a specified distance of it. If you have already left the home because of violence or threats of violence, the court can make Orders enabling you to return safely. The police will usually work with us to protect you further and any breach of a Non-Molestation Order or Occupation Order is treated very seriously by the courts.

What other help is available? There are a number of organisations who specialise in providing support and practical help for the victims of domestic abuse. They can help you find a safe place to stay if you can’t stay at home in the short term, and provide advice about benefits and financial matters. We can put you in touch with these organisations. What about the cost? Legal aid funding is still available for those on a low income or receiving certain state benefits. We can assess your entitlement to funding quickly and if necessary make an emergency application to protect you. You may also be able to use evidence of domestic violence to obtain legal aid for other family proceedings such as divorce, financial matters or children disputes.

For more information, contact any of our family solicitors.

Charming cheese

Do you know your Old Winchester from your Harrogate Blue? Phoebe Seymour enjoyed a cheese-tasting masterclass at Bawtry Cheese Cave.

D

runken Burt, Stichelton, Blue Monday – no, this isn’t a list of tracks from New Order’s greatest hits album, but just a few of the delicious cheeses you can find at The Bawtry Cheese Cave. Based at Dower House Square, this charming cheese deli has something to please every dairy fan. Owner Nicky Kay invited myself and Terri Moore, Eastside publishing manager and self-confessed cheese-addict, to try a wide selection for ourselves. We started with a glass of prosecco – a good all-rounder to refresh the palate between tastings. Nicky also recommended red wine to go with all the cheeses we sampled. Blue Monday is an award-winning cheese created by Blur bassist Alex James. This certainly had a quirky flavour and will please those who are big on blue cheeses. Harrogate Blue is orange (and blue of course) with a strong and nutty after taste, whilst the Stichelton, with its white and brown appearance, was mild with a pleasantly surprising toffee undertone. Nicky recommended we try Old Winchester and Quicke’s Vintage with honey, which beautifully balanced out the more bitter flavours. The latter lived up to its name with a musty, vintage taste, but with a similar flavour to cheddar, the Old Winchester was my favourite.

DiVine was a close second with its crumbly texture, mild flavour on the inside and an interesting flavour on the outside owing to being wrapped in vine leaves and having been washed in cider. Meanwhile Baron Bigod brie was a huge hit with Terri, whilst we came to an agreement that Ogleshield ticked all the boxes, being neither too strong nor too mild. If you are an open-minded cheese-lover, the sour notes of goat’s cheese, Rachel, and the full-bodied sheep’s cheese, Creeny, will be right up your street. But if you are buying for a cheese-loving friend and are not sure what to choose, Kirkham’s Lancashire is a good bet as it is the best-selling cheese in the area. The deli stock between 22 and 23 cheeses at any one time, so whether you’d like a cheese board making up for lunch or are thinking about creating the perfect

Christmas hamper, there are plenty to choose from. There is also an abundance of pickles, crackers and entrees to accompany them. You can choose a whole wheel or block of cheese as a Christmas gift, but don’t wait until December, put your order in now. Cheese bombs (baked camembert) are also a big-seller and if you are about to get hitched and are not much of a sweet tooth, you can even get a cheese wedding cake made up of layers of cheese wheels. So whether you want to indulge with a cheese-themed lunch, have a celebration cake that will get all your guests talking or want to arrange your very own cheese tasting event, contact Nicky Kay at The Bawtry Cheese Cave, 7 Dower House Square, Bawtry, Doncaster, DN10 6LS or visit www.thecheesecave.co.uk for inspiration.

www.visitbawtry.com

A taste for the dramatic Stephanie Burns enjoys a memorable Italian meal at Ziniz.

F

riday nights in Bawtry are always something to be savoured. Whether it’s a meal out with your other half, a few drinks with friends or a simple stroll through the town to soak up the buzzing atmosphere, there are few places like it. On this particular occasion, my partner and I had our sights set on Ziniz - Bawtry’s fabulous Italian restaurant overlooking the main square. Weaving our way through the crowds of people sipping Prosecco and bottled beers at the bar, we stepped out of the hustle and bustle and into the restaurant. There was still a good dose of the Friday night buzz away from the bar, with up-tempo dance music providing a sizzling backdrop to our meal. This, along with the black leather booths, dark wooden tables, ornate black mirrors and a huge Italian photographic fresco along the length of one wall, made for a spectacular setting. While sipping on a glass of Vino Spumante Prosecco (£5.95) and a bottle of Peroni (£3.95), we perused the extensive menu. It more than matched our expectations and we spent quite a while trying to whittle down our selection - there are so many tempting options, we could easily have ordered half a dozen dishes each and still missed out on some amazing treats.

For starters, the crispy salt and pepper batter and tender baby squid of my partner’s Calamari Fritti (£7.25) – including, to his delight, the tentacles – made for a fine example of this classic dish and came with plenty of lime mayonnaise for dipping. My Insalata di Parma (£7.95) was equally well received; a generous portion of thinly sliced and incredibly flavoursome San Daniele meat from Parma matched perfectly with the peppery rocket leaves and delicately shaved parmesan. On to mains, and my partner’s Mare Arabella (£18.95) was another delight. This wonderfully garlicky seafood extravaganza saw dramatic black ink spaghetti team up with mussels, king prawns and scallops for a really show-stopping dish. It was an absolute dream, especially when enjoyed with a large chilled glass of Solstice Sauvignon Blanc (£6.35), and is something either one of us would be happy to order again. My Filletto alla Claudia (£22), while less flamboyant, was just as good. I was in my element with prime-aged fillet of beef medallions flamed in a brandy, cream and wholegrain mustard sauce and a side of buttered green beans (£3.25). I could have chosen any one of the three potato sides too, but I decided to hold back on the carbs and

save room for dessert. And I’m glad I did. While my partner opted for a light option of Vin Santo con Cantuccini (£3.95) - a Tuscan dessert wine served with deliciously traditional Cantuccini biscuits - it was a chocolate tart that caught my eye on the dessert menu. You wouldn’t have known the sweet pastry case of my Torta Cioccolato e Arancia, £5.50 was free of gluten, wheat and dairy. Filled with a beautifully rich chocolate orange ganache and accompanied by ice cream and fruit, it was a sweetly indulgent ending to what had been a truly wonderful meal. LET YOURSELF FALL INTO RELAXATION AMIDST THE LUXURIOUS SURROUNDINGS OF THE CLUMBER PARK HOTEL AND SPA.

Home of peace and pampering he thought of a spa day puts a twinkle in our eyes, whether that's having a massage, lounging by the pool with your phone turned off, or experiencing a day of pampering - a spa day is the sort of jaunt that puts the spring back in our step, especially after a long week in the office. Set peacefully in expansive grounds, and located just down the road from the impressive Clumber Park, the aptly named Clumber Park Hotel and Spa is the ideal place to spend a few hours – or even days – unwinding. On arrival at the New Leaf Spa we were greeted by a friendly receptionist who informed us of our treatment times and the location of the complementary facilities. We were then given robes and slippers to change into before whiling away a couple of hours steaming, relaxing in the sauna and lounging

around the pool - with the occasional dip in the indoor whirlpool in-between. Both our therapists explained every aspect of our treatments to us before they started, and prior to our session - a 25-minute New Leaf Rasul Mud Facial and New Leaf Booster Facial - we were asked to fill out a questionnaire about our skin, which was used to tailor the facial to our skin type. The rasul mud facial - using New Leaf products completely refreshed my skin - left my face feeling hydrated, balanced and supple. Not only was it relaxing, but my skin was soft to touch and complexion seemed much more even. Feeling relaxed, and with a complementary cup of tea in hand, I returned to the spa facilities for more steaming and soaking. Meanwhile my friend was revelling in her first taste of being pampered. Perfect for a lunch-time or early evening 'quick fix', the booster facials are uniquely designed for maximum results in minimum time, and in just 25 minutes this treatment really made a difference to her skin leaving it feeling deeply cleansed and her complexion visibly illuminated. After our treatments we each enjoyed our tea and a blueberry muffin, accompanied by fresh strawberries and cream

in the relaxation lounge. The setting itself was extremely relaxing, with soothing mood music being piped through the speakers around the room - combining dimmed lights, beautiful aromas and an abundance of reading material. To top off the experience the sun was shining and we finished the afternoon in the outdoor hot tub, nestled amongst the trees and secluded in a beautifully tranquil woodland setting. Before heading back into the spa to stock up on a range of products available to purchase from the reception, to complement our treatments. New Leaf Spa is ideal for anyone in search of some real relaxation time. There’s also a new Autumn Treatment Menu available, including Jack O Lantern Body Exfoliation, Indian Summer Massage and Warm Chocolate Body Wrap. Alongside an Autumn Spa Day package (£59 per person or £99 for two) including treats such as full use of spa facilities and the gym, a choice of one 25 minute treatment (Full Body Exfoliation, New Leaf Tranquillity Scalp Massage, New Leaf Booster Facial, New Leaf Rasul Mud Facial), and complementary tea, coffee and a treat. With 15 per cent off additional pre booked full price treatments. Total Strangers

Mums the Word 2

CAST Cast in Doncaster is celebrating its third birthday with a thriving programme of entertainment this autumn. This season includes Sing-along-a Rocky Horror Picture Show (7 October) and Big Girls Don’t Cry (12 October), as well as Music in the Round’s Brilliant Beethoven festival (30 September to 2 October) and a Children’s Festival (22 to 30 October). The autumn season kicks off with political satire Dead Sheep (Tuesday 6 to Saturday 10 September) starring Spitting Image’s Steve Nallon as Margaret Thatcher. Cast also welcomes the major national tours of poignantly funny, Mums the Word 2 (29 September); Graham Greene’s Travels with My Aunt (4 – 6 October); and English Touring Theatre’s production of Terrence Rattigan’s 1936 smash-hit romantic comedy French Without Tears (18 – 22 October). After last year’s Colour of Time success, Cast brings another free

outdoor spectacular Clash of Drums (23 September, 8pm) and Yorkshire’s award-winning comedy duo LipService return with Mr Darcy Loses the Plot (13 October), ahead of the 200th year commemorations of Jane Austen’s death. The varied season in the intimate Second Space starts with comedian Steve Gribbin’s Real Story of the Railways – Shunted Again (15 September), international acclaimed Spanish guitarist Eduardo Niebla in Concert (17 September) and Tanja (22 September), a story of bravery in the midst of prejudice and abuse at Yarl’s Wood Immigration Removal Centre. This year’s pantomime Jack and the Beanstalk (2 – 31 December) promises to scale new heights with a giant of a show; and for small children Twelve Birds of Christmas (3 - 24 December) will be full of magical storytelling and fun, festive cheer.

Total strangers are being sought to hold hands with each other in Doncaster as part of an "intimate" art project. This may immediately set the alarm siren going inside your head, but it is part of a nationwide project that asks us all to confront some very interesting questions. Walking: Holding will be staged in Doncaster on September 3 and 4, with local participants walking hand in hand with each other around parks, streets and alleyways - despite not knowing each other. The project challenges perceptions and forces you to ask questions about the town you What does your town look like from someone else's perspective? How intimate can you be with someone you've just met? Walking:Holding invites you to walk hand in hand with a series of different local strangers around nearby streets, parks and alleyways. It is a participatory performance for one audience member at a time, offering a gentle meditation on identity, touch and intimacy in urban public space. Walking:Holding was first created in Glasgow in 2011 and has since toured extensively across the UK and internationally, working with local participants as performers in each location. A film about the project is being created this summer with support from the Jerwood Charitable Foundation. The concept was created by Rosana Cade, a performance maker based in Glasgow. Whilst the form of her performance work varies, and emerges in relation to the specific process or context she is engaging with, it is firmly rooted in a queer discourse and straddles live art and activism. Rosana’s performances happen in various contexts including theatres, public spaces, as well as club and cabaret settings. Performances 3 - 4 September with Right Up Our Street, DNweekeND rightupourstreet.org.uk/ More information on the project, and images from various previous performances here: rosanacadedotcom.wordpress.com/projects/walkingholding/

Join the party AN INDIAN RESTAURANT WITH A TOUCH OF LUXURY HITS THE SPOT FOR MOLLY McGREEVY. ndian restaurants have always been a perfect venue for party nights with a big group of friends, so when myself, a friend and Eastside’s Terri and Rebecca visited Aagrah on the eve of Terri’s summer trip to Ibiza, it was the perfect warm up for her stay on the White Isle. There’s a touch of luxury when dining at Aagrah, even the waiting area is adorned with grand, dark oak furniture decorated with colourful Asian imagery. Sitting down in the opulent restaurant and being waited on by their attentive, knowledgeable staff makes for a special dining experience. Poppadoms and pickles are brought to the table almost immediately, whilst we peruse the incredibly extensive menu, with options for all tastes. For the fussier curry fan, chefs can prepare a bespoke dish to any individual taste, or if you are feeling particularly flash you can pre-order a whole stuffed lamb, it’ll only set you back £290. To start, the vegetarians in our party shared an Aagrah special vegetable mix (£5.95) whilst others sampled the meat and fish options, ordering the chicken chaat (£3.50) and king prawn tikka (£6.95).

I

xx Eastside | www.sheffieldvibe.com

The vegetable mix was served beautifully and had a great selection of items, including bhajis, samosas, paneer and a selection of deep fried vegetables. The vegetables were perfectly al dente whilst the batter was light and fresh, a wonderful start to the meal. The chicken chaat was beautifully flavoured and had a spicy kick to it, whilst Rebecca’s king prawn tikka came with a beautiful hyderabadi sauce, which is so good that Aagrah have decided to bottle it up, and customers can take it away for that authentic experience at home. As part of their commitment to high quality service, all meals at Aagrah are brought out on a silver trolley, adding again to the luxury dining atmosphere, and ensuring everything is served piping hot. The mixed vegetable hyderabadi (£6.95), a dish of fresh vegetables cooked with tangy spices in a creamy sauce, was beautifully fragrant whilst the peshwari naan (£3.50) was made with pineapple rather than the usual raisins, a delicious twist on a traditional recipe. The balti vegetable paneer (£6.95), a dish which features traditional Kashmiri style curd

cheese and fresh vegetables, was one of the best paneer curries I have tasted, whilst Terri chose the handi murgh (£8.50), a popular Punjabi dish featuring fennel seeds. She had read the seeds prevent bloating, an essential superfood with her beach holiday less than 24 hours away. So Terri was able to enjoy pre-holiday feast that didn’t ruin her beach body, and for the rest of us the genuine Kashmiri cuisine, grand setting and attentive staff made it a party night to remember. Leading lady Jennifer Ward (centre) with Carolyn (left) and Emma Poole of Chique

Are you ready for the fashionista stakes? Eastside’s Best Dressed Lady ith the Ladbrokes St Leger Festival just around the corner, fashionistas across the region will be preparing their best outfits in preparation for one of the most prestigious events in the horseracing calendar. Eastside ladies who have bought their outfits from local, independent boutiques will also be preparing to battle it out for the title of Eastside’s Best Dressed Lady 2016, and a prize worth £100s. Last year’s winner, Jennifer Ward of Branton, bought her St Leger outfit from Chique in Armthorpe. She wore a stunning Kevan Jon dress, fabulous fascinator and co-ordinating Paper Dolls bag and shoes. Speaking after her win last year, Jennifer said: “I

W

took six other dresses into the changing room but I tried this one on first and fell in love with it. The girls helped me pick the shoes and bag and, as I was trying it all on, the hat was delivered to the shop – it was obviously meant to be!” Not only does the lady wearing the dress win, but the boutique that sells the victorious dress will win the coveted Eastside Best Boutique 2016 award. With so many beautiful boutiques in the region, and only a few weeks until the St Leger festival, there is no better time to check out what is on offer at these independent businesses. Not only are their staff friendly and their clothes beautiful, but if you wear one of their outfits to St Leger you could be Eastside’s Best Dressed Lady 2016.

THE EARL OF DONCASTER ####

EATING OUT

Gatsby, it’s great! PHOEBE SEYMOUR FALLS FOR THE FLAVOUR OF THE ROARING TWENTIES AT THE EARL OF DONCASTER ome books stick with us throughout our lives, and for me, The Great Gatsby is definitely one of them. So when I was told I would be dining at The Earl of Doncaster Hotel, I was over the moon. Anyone who has enjoyed getting lost in the stylish and lavish pages (or the extravagant scenes of the Baz Luhrman film) will absolutely adore the roaring 1920’s décor of The Café Bar Concerto Restaurant. As my partner and I walked through the door, we were greeted by a gold piano, grand chandeliers and art deco wallpaper. After soaking up the stunning surroundings and enjoying a glass of prosecco (£6.50), we were well and truly transported to another world. Alongside their bar food menu, head chef Derek Hudson has created a table d’hote menu, streamlined to just three options under each course (two courses, £19.95 and three courses £24.95), yet still manages to offer a variety of dishes. This was ideal for indecisive people such as myself and much to the relief of my hungry partner. Derek has only been at The Earl of Doncaster for seven months, but has over 30 years of experience having worked in some of the best kitchens all over the UK, from Cornwall to the Highlands. And though this menu offers some classic dishes, he has a knack for putting his signature twist on them. I started with the Langoustine Tails, three

S

giant, juicy prawns served in a light batter and accompanied by a tomato and star anise coulis. With its oriental flavours and wedges of lime, this was a delightful and light option. My partner started with the soup of the day, carrot and coriander. Thick with a hint of pepper and served with a warm bread roll, it was filling and comforting. Moving onto mains, my pan fried duck breast with kumquat sauce and buttery crushed new potatoes was a delicious and exotic twist to the classic duck and orange combination. My partner meanwhile, had the shredded and rolled beef brisket served in a red wine jus, mashed potatoes and confit shallots, which was slightly smoky and full flavour. For dessert, I had the chocolate brownie with vanilla ice cream. Crisp on the outside and soft in the middle, I felt I’d saved the best for last. My partner had the cheesecake of the day, which meant more chocolate, and though he commented on how rich it was, he finished every last bite. More than she bargained for Doncaster’s Best Dressed Lady at the St Leger DFS Ladies Day 2015, Kirsty Booth, has had an enjoyable year since winning the prize, but wasn’t prepared for what happened on her trip to New York. Kirsty from Doncaster was crowned Best Dressed Lady 2015 for her striking monochrome outfit from Unique in Sprotbrough, Kirsty Booth (centre) proudly takes her place on the DFS sofa with runners up accessorised with a homemade ‘hatinator’. In May, Kirsty and her partner of 12 years visited the Big Apple and it was here Tom dropped to one knee in Central Park and proposed. “New York is an amazing place and was made even more special with my marriage proposal,” said Kirsty. “We visited all the sites. I still can’t believe this was part of the prize.” This year’s Ladbrokes St Leger Festival commences on Wednesday 7 September, with the DFS Ladies Day on Thursday 8 September. COULD CUPPING THERAPY USED BY OLYMPIC ATHLETES IN RIO TO IMPROVE PERFORMANCE HAVE WIDER HEALTH BENEFITS? ELIZABETH ANN THERAPIES INVESTIGATES. ince the Olympics started, everyone is talking about cupping therapy; there has been lots of media coverage with attentiongrabbing headlines as athletes such as multi-gold winner Michael Phelps have claimed it helps his teammates win medals. Team USA athletes are using cupping therapy to relieve aching muscles. The gymnastic teams are using cupping therapy. Swimmers are also strong advocates of cupping therapy. The New York Times was one of the first media outlets to spot something was going on and ask the question: what are those purple marks on the athletes? The simple answer is, they are the marks created by having had cupping therapy. It has caught attention because it often leaves round marks that look like bruises that can last for a couple of days. But cupping is a great way to treat muscle pain, stiffness, injuries and respiratory issues. The Rio Olympics provides us with growing evidence that athletes are turning to the alternative medicine in an attempt to boost their performance. Cupping therapy is also popular among members of the USA track and field team. The object of cupping therapy is to increase motion and get rid of what we call subtle tissue lesions within certain areas of the body. It has also received celebrity endorsements from Gwyneth Paltrow, Victoria Beckham and Jennifer Aniston.

Dear Liz I am suffering from an old injury to my back which keeps coming back. It did seem to be getting better but now I seem to have a constant pain in my lower back. I've had massage and it does give relief for a while, but is there any other therapy that could help completely sort it. John, Doncaster Dear John Without knowing what the actual injury originally was it's difficult to say. But if massage is helping to relieve it, cupping therapy above could be very useful. It is similar to a deep tissue massage, but you can go deeper and have less pain than a conventional massage.

EATING OUT

Finger-licking good IF YOU’RE LOOKING FOR A FEAST OF COMFORT FOOD, CHRIS WILSON MIGHT HAVE JUST FOUND THE RIGHT PLACE... here are times when only generous platefuls of calorie-laden comfort food will do... and when that persistent itch demands a good scratch, the team at Coleman’s Pizzeria & Steakhouse in Bawtry is standing by to deliver the goods. My first visit came during the diner’s opening week in the spring of 2015; there was still a whiff of fresh paint in the air, mingling with cooking smells drifting over from the open-plan kitchen at the far end of the restaurant. Everyone involved was, naturally, bubbling over with the enthusiasm that comes with the birth of a new project, but more than a year later I was intrigued to see what had changed. The short answer is: not a lot. Still busy, still buzzing, and still hitting the mark when it comes to big flavours. This is not fast food: you see everything being cooked in front of you, including some nifty pizza-base spinning from the kitchen crew. We began by sharing two of the most popular starters: chicken wings with Frank’s

T

hot sauce (£6.25) and Coca Cola & BBQ sticky rib fingers (£6.50). There is no dignified way to eat food like this, just use your fingers and get stuck in. The wings were zinging hot, the ribs were incredibly meaty and fall-off-the-bone tender, in a sauce that was just the right balance of sour-sweet. Steaks are sourced from Prospect Home Farm in Mexborough and include the eyewatering 72oz rump steak (designed for sharing, although some foolhardy souls have apparently taken it upon themselves to turn it into a Man vs Food-style challenge). But it’s the quality that really counts when steak is on the agenda and a 9oz fillet (£21.95) with all the trimmings, cooked medium rare as requested and including very good chips with a creamy blue cheese sauce on the side (£3) really hit the spot. Our other main course selection just had to be a pizza and the seafood feast (£12.95) had a lovely thin base, still slightly chewy, and was generously laden with crab meat, garlic king prawns, hot smoked salmon and tuna. All the pizzas come with a cutting wheel, by the way. Being a bit of a ham-

fisted Harry I struggled with the first slice, after which it was plain sailing and all good, slightly messy fun. We ate at lunchtime and if you find the full main menu a bit heavy-going for that time of day there is a lighter menu served between 11.30am and 3.30pm with a good selection of jumbo sandwiches served with chips and salad from a fiver, pizzas from £7 and a selection of burgers and salads. Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate Independent Education Girls & Boys 3 to 19 years Day & Boarding Thorpe Underwood, Yorkshire. Phone: 01423 333 330 Email: info@QE.org Web: www.QE.org

Are we all about academics? No, but were you aware the Daily Telegraph and The Times both rank QE College as the top most academically successful day and boarding school in the North for A*/ A grades at A Level and equivalent results and our Faculty of Queen Ethelburga’s, the second most academically successful co-educational day and boarding school in the North for A*/ A grades at A Level and equivalent results?

Are we all about Sport? No independent school in the North has the equivalent of our £30m Sports Village. A parent said we are now in a league above the rest. See: www.qesportsvillage.org

Are we all about superb facilities? No, but we have invested over £80m in superb new teaching facilities and resources in the last 8 years - way more than any other independent school in the North.

Are we all about boarding? No, but no one comes close to the quality of our boarding accommodation. The best in the UK. All bedrooms have private bathroom, air-con, TV, phone & mini-kitchen.

A LEVEL RESULTS 2015 QE COLLEGE Overall pass rate 100% A*/A - A level results - 81% A*/B - A level results - 98% QE FACULTY Overall pass rate 100% A*/A - A level results - 81% A*/B - A level results - 97% “We were looking for our children to change schools. However in the independent sector this has financial implications. Our problems in this regard were solved by the offer of Day or Boarding Awards (our choice) for both children. They moved, are now happy, and doing very well. QE is growing in size because it is run in a refreshing, modern and much better way. There are plenty of day children.”

Enjoy a 6th Form education at QE and pay no fees!.... Day Award up to £25,000, Boarding Award up to £65,000 If your child’s GCSE grades are predicted 10 Grade A star GCSE’s worth up to 100% of the fees 9 A star and 1 A Grade GCSE’s worth up to 80% of the fees 8 A star and 2 A Grade GCSE’s worth up to 60% of the fees 7 A star and 3 A Grade GCSE’s worth up to 40% of the fees

Are we all about day pupils? No, but it is interesting to note our day fees are, on average, over 14% less cost than other local independent schools and our bus service covers a very big local area.

Is it all about Scholarships and Awards? No, but then again who else offers over £3m in Scholarships and Awards every year? Even without any form of Scholarship or Award, sending your child to QE could save you between £3,000 and £7,000 in day fees a year, compared to elsewhere.

All of the above are perhaps the reasons why appreciably more parents have chosen QE this year than last year.

QE £30m Sports Village Elite Sports Academy Awards worth upto £7,000 Day or boarding, upto 100%. Membership costs of Elite Sports Academies for: Athletics, Basketball, Cricket, Football, Netball, Rugby, Swimming.
