ST LEGER FESTIVAL
THE WAITING IS ALMOST OVER… BUT WHERE IS THE SMART MONEY GOING ON THIS YEAR’S BIG RACE? ROBERT PLUMBRIDGE CASTS HIS EYE OVER THE POSSIBLE RUNNERS AND RIDERS.
Ready for the off he Doncaster St Leger is the oldest, longest in distance and final Classic of the British flat racing calendar. The one mile, six furlongs and 132-yard trip has been hotly contested by the very best horses, trainers and jockeys ever since its inception way back in 1776. The 2017 renewal of the race is no different, and we’ve taken a look at five of the top contenders aiming for Town Moor glory on September 16.
T
CAPRI
Aidan O’Brien, right, possibly the most famous trainer in racing, always has a strong hand in the St Leger having won it four times (2001, 2003, 2005, 2013), and this year has Capri at the top of the market. Capri showed true grit winning the Irish Derby, beating some highly-rated rivals which included his stablemate Wings Of Eagles who won this year’s English Derby at Epsom in June. Capri’s jockey that day Seamie Heffernan was clearly not expecting it, commenting on his way to the winner’s enclosure, ‘It’s a nice surprise’. Nevertheless, should he go to Doncaster he’ll be near the top of the betting market and it’d be no fluke should he once again prevail. A son of ‘Super Stud’ Galileo, who has sired some of the best racehorses of the past two decades, will relish the long distance and his never-saydie attitude is tailor made for the St Leger. STRADIVARIUS
Another trainer who is no stranger to St Leger glory is John Gosden, who like O’Brien has for titles to his name. His contingent looks to be headed by Goodwood Cup hero Stradivarius. His defeat of people’s hero Big Orange in that race saw his odds tumble for the Doncaster showpiece right down to 4/1 at the head of the market. He beat a very smart performer that day who was odds-on and most punters’ idea of a ‘banker’, and is one of the best pieces 18 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk
of form on offer. Stradivarius showed stamina well beyond his tender three years of age and the further he travels the stronger he seemingly gets in a race. Commentators after the race were quick to point to the St Leger as his most likely target. The main obstruction to his chances, however, could be his lack of pace. At a distance of one mile and six furlongs most horses who win the St Leger have the right balance of stamina and pace, and while the former is no concern he could find himself ‘tapped for toe’ in the final couple of furlongs. CRYSTAL OCEAN
One horse who certainly won’t be lacking in the speed department is Crystal Ocean. In fact his St Leger credentials are the direct opposite to those of Stradivarius. He’s got the turn of foot to be successful in the race but questions remain whether one mile and six furlongs will be too long for him. He’s very lightly raced at this point having been on the racetrack just five times, and winning twice. Sir Michael Stoute is renowned for getting his young horses to improve however, and Crystal Ocean has bags of potential and could well develop into a horse capable of winning at the extended distance.
holds up well with current St Leger favourite Capri though and Coronet could well represent good value odds to take the big one at Doncaster. OTHERS TO NOTE
Raheem House is another in the line-up sired by the great Sea The Stars. He’ll be stepping up to Group 1 company for this first time but will surely improve on his last win at Newmarket. Benbatl gave jockey Oisin Murphy a day to remember at Royal Ascot, securing the young jockeys first Royal winner. The Godolphin horse ran well to come fifth in The Derby and could go well at large-ish odds once again. Joseph O’Brien (left) won the St Leger as a jockey so knows what is needed. He is now a trainer in his own right and could saddle Rekindling. Crucially the horse has already won at one mile six furlongs but will have to step up to prove he can cut it at this level having come 16th and 13th at previous tries in Group 1 company. VERDICT: CORONET
CORONET
Another on the list who won at Royal Ascot earlier this year in the Group 2 Ribblesdale Stakes. That was a very strong renewal of that race with some well-regarded runners in behind Coronet. Another from the powerful John Gosden yard, the grey is not the stable first string for the St Leger, but certainly has the scope to step up and win a Group 1. Her pedigree suggests stamina will be no issue whatsoever, and she is a half-sister to Midas Touch who herself was a second in this race. She also has some serious form in the book in the shape of her win in the Zetland Stakes. She beat Epsom Derby winner Wings Of Eagles in that, albeit early on in their careers. That form
There is no standout contender for the 2017 Doncaster St Leger. Past years have had strong favourites at the top of the betting market, but it looks a very open field this time around. Crystal Ocean on breeding looks like he will build on his previous runs and there are few better to extract that improvement than Sir Michael Stoute. However, Coronet looks to have the perfect blend to be very competitive in this. The mix of stamina and turn of foot are exactly what is required for this test, add to that the determination she so clearly showed at Ascot and she’s sure to be in the mix. The fillies in this race also receive a 3lb weight allowance going up against the boys, which sways it even more in her favour.

RAISE THE STAKES A BLUFFERS’ GUIDE TO A DAY AT THE ST LEGER FESTIVAL. BY ROBERT PLUMBRIDGE.
day at the races is one of the UK’s favourite day outs. In fact over 7.4 million of us attend a race day each year. Like all sports there are seasoned racegoers who go multiple times a year, but for those who have never been and don’t understand the sport in its entirety it can be hard to follow. The Doncaster St Leger is one of the most popular events on the calendar, so if you’re a newcomer to the Town Moore track we’ve compiled our top tips to having a great day. From the history of the big race, to finding a winner - we’ve got you covered.
A
When you get there First thing to do when you get to the course is to get yourself a racecard. This will tell you all the times of the races, the horses running, the jockeys riding and will also tell you of any other activities happening at the course before and after racing. Before racing starts be sure to head to the parade ring to take a look at all the horses- it’s amazing to see primed thoroughbred racehorses up close.
What is the St Leger? The Doncaster St Leger festival is named after the main race which takes place at 3.35 on Saturday. It is the oldest of the British Classic races-the top level races- which also include the 2000 Guineas, 1,000 Guineas, Epsom Oaks and the Epsom Derby. It dates back as far as 1776 when it was first organised by Army Officer Anthony St Leger. It’s a race for the best 3-year-olds who race at this distance, and there is £400,000 up for grabs to the winner and placed horses.
26 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk
Jargon Buster Horse racing has some pretty strange jargon, almost like another language. Below are some terms you may hear on raceday, with their meaning to help you out! Cut In The Ground – A term used to describe the ground conditions when there has been some rain which has softened it. Classic – The St Leger is part of the British Classic races. These are a group of major races during the British flat season. The others included are the 2,000 Guines, 1,000 Guineas, The Oaks and The Derby.
How to pick a winner There are hundreds of ways to find yourself a winner on raceday. The most common way is to look at a horse’s form. On your racecard it will tell you how a horse has run in its last races. It will also give you an idea of which horses are likely to run well this time. Look for horses with a C and/or a D next to their name. This indicates they have won at the Course and/or the Distance previously which bodes well for them this time. As well as form, it’s worth taking into consideration the jockey and trainer of a horse. Some trainers and jockeys do well at certain courses. So if you’re going to Doncaster the trainers with the best strike rate (win to number of runs) over the past five years are Richard Fahey, Roger Varian and John Gosden. The statistically most prolific jockeys here are Andrea Atzeni, Jamie Spencer and Paul Hanagan. Horses trained and ridden by those are definitely worth a second look. If form isn’t your thing, then you can’t go wrong with picking a name. There’s some wonderfully named horses like Maythehorsebewithu or Micmacmagoole. Or you can pick one with a name similar to yours or a loved one like Our Boy Jack, or Sweet Theresa. Whether you are successful at picking a winner or not, Doncaster St Leger week is not one you’ll forget at one of the finest racecourses in Europe.
Furlong – A term used in racing as a measure of distance. One furlong is an eighth of a mile and around 220 yards. On a racetrack there are sign posts going back from the winning post every furlong. Filly – A female horse which is four years old or younger. Odds-On – When the odds of a horse to win are such that the stake (the amount put on) is higher than the amount of profit if the best is successful. Parade Ring – All racecourse have one. Before the race begins the horses will be taken around the parade ring allowing racegoers to take a look at all the horses before they run in the race. Some people like to study the horses before they place their bets.

ST LEGER FESTIVAL
RACE LEADERS ONE OF THE BIGGEST BRANDS IN BETTING IS STEPPING UP TO SPONSOR THE WILLIAM HILL ST LEGER STAKES, WRITES PHOEBE SEYMOUR. t is one of the best-known bookies in the country and now William Hill is set to sponsor one of the biggest event on the racing calendar – The St Leger Festival at Doncaster Racecourse. Arena Racing Company (ARC) recently announced that William Hill is the new sponsor of the St Leger Stakes, the world’s oldest classic horserace. The three-year deal sees William Hill sponsor the Group 1 St Leger Stakes, worth £700,000 this year, along with a feature race each day of the four-day festival. This year’s event, known as The William Hill St Leger Festival, will be running from Wednesday 13 September to Saturday 16 September. William Hill CEO, Philip Bowcock, said: “William Hill is one of the best known brands in betting - with a long history of horseracing sponsorship. We are delighted to sponsor the oldest classic and we will work closely with ARC to continue to build the profile and popularity of the William Hill St Leger Festival.” Chief executive of ARC, Martin Cruddace, added: “We are delighted William Hill have become the new sponsors of the St Leger. We really enjoy working with their team and look forward to extending this to our feature racing festival of the year.
I
“William Hill have the brand, vision and team to help build on the success of both the four-day festival and the feature race, the St Leger, which continues to be one of the most important races in the British Racing calendar.” In 2016, the St Leger Festival was attended by over 60,000 racegoers and this year promises to be an even bigger success. However, if you can’t make the 2017 event, terrestrial coverage of the William Hill St Leger Stakes day will be on the ITV1 channel, with coverage on ITV4 for Ladies’ Day and Gentlemen’s Day. New St Leger Festival sponsor William Hill was the first betting company to sponsor a major horserace in 1957. Today, William Hill is sponsor of the Ayr Gold Cup, the Great St. Wilfrid at Ripon, the Scottish Super Sprint at Musselburgh and is also the broadcast sponsor for all of ITV’s horseracing coverage. Doncaster Racecourse is one of the oldest established centres for horse racing in Britain, with records of regular race meetings going back to the 16th century with the St Leger being just one of the many major racing events they host. Tim Banfield, executive director of Doncaster Racecourse, said: “The William Hill St Leger Festival is a wonderful four days
Alongside the feature race, William Hill will sponsor the following races: • The William Hill Handicap on the opening day of the Festival (Wednesday) • The William Hill May Hill Stakes on Ladies’ Day (Thursday) • The William Hill Mallard Stakes on Gentlemen’s Day (Friday) • The William Hill Portland Stakes on the finale, alongside the William Hill St Leger Stakes on the final day (Saturday).
of racing for Doncaster, the Yorkshire region and the whole of British Racing. “We aim to have a real and long-term partnership with all our sponsors and we look forward to integrating William Hill’s worldrenowned brand into our feature event. “The team here have worked hard on preparations for this year’s William Hill St Leger Festival and we are set on delivering another fantastic four days of racing.” Tickets for the St. Leger Festival are now on sale and can be purchased online at www.doncaster-racecourse.co.uk. EATING OUT
Salute to a unique venue PHOEBE SEYMOUR DISCOVERS AUTHENTIC THAI CUISINE IN THE HEART OF DONCASTER t first glance, it looks like a traditional British pub, so it’s hard to imagine The Salutation in Doncaster serving authentic Thai food. But follow the red, busily-patterned carpet up the stairs through an unlabelled stained glass door, and like some kind of culinary Narnia, there is a whole other world on the first floor. Clusters of huge, stylish light bulbs hang long from a purple and gold ceiling, colourful canvases and carved wooden Thai artwork line the walls and soft, grey upholstered booths line the walls. Along with three separate dining areas, including two alcoves for extra privacy, it makes for a luxurious and romantic setting. Graham and Ton Wilsdon opened Thai At The Sal on 15 December 2016. The couple had already taken over the well-established Salutation pub some months earlier, and after trialling their home-cooked Thai dishes alongside a more typical pub menu filled with burgers and pies, they felt confident in opening a separate restaurant in place of the existing function room. Ton grew up in a village near Ratchuburi in Thailand. Cooking from a young age, she opened her first restaurant, Mai Dang, there when she was just 18. This is where she first met Graham and a few years later, they

married and decided to start a family in Doncaster. She opened the first Thai restaurant in Doncaster, the Bangkok Thai Restaurant, which expanded and became the Bangkok Royal Elephant, before closing after over 10 successful years in business. Now claiming to be the only Thai restaurant in Doncaster, Thai At The Sal fills the void left by the Bangkok Royal Elephant, and marks a new chapter for the business woman - and for the town. The great thing about this restaurant being based inside a pub is that they stock a wide array of wines and beers. My partner and I however, couldn’t resist a refreshing and sparkling prosecco (£6.95 for a mini bottle), but gin lovers will be delighted to also find a menu dedicated to the spirit, with everything from artisan Sheffield gin, Sir Robin of Locksley, to rare handcrafted gins such as Monkey 47. For starters, I had the corn cakes (£3.95) – lightly spiced and fried fritters, and my partner had the barbequed chicken wings (£4.95), which were both served in golden baskets with a sticky and sweet chilli dipping sauce. Moving onto mains, my partner chose the gai gaeng dang (£7.95) – a classic Thai red chicken curry and I opted for Ton’s nuar
massaman (£7.95) – a slow cooked beef dish in a mild, aniseed flavoured curry sauce, specially recommended and named after Ton herself. The spicy red Thai curry was cooled with an egg fried rice (£2.50), along with a side of egg noodles with crunchy vegetables (£3.95) and some home cooked chips (£2.50). Though the restaurant does not do a desserts menu, after asking a member of staff, they were only too happy to offer a warm Thai pancake with vanilla ice cream (£4), which my partner and I shared – a sweet end to a delightful dining experience. A WEDDING GONE WILD… THE CROWN HOTEL BAWTRY PROVIDED THE PERFECT PACKAGE FOR EMILY AND HAYDEN ARMSTRONG’S WILD WEDDING.
38 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk
‘
orn and raised in Blackpool, Hayden and I met at sixth form and have been together a little over ten years. We’re childhood sweethearts. Our mums went to school together – they were even in the same year – and getting married seemed like a natural progression. Hayden is not religious, so we knew from the offset a church would never be for us. We looked at a few stately homes and similar styled venues, but nothing stood out. My best friend, and one half of my maid of honour duo, Tracy sent me a document entitled '20 weird and wacky wedding ideas', and a zoo wedding was on the list. This immediately struck a chord with me – I am a veterinary surgeon and as a child I grew up on a smallholding, so animals and visits to zoos play a huge role in my life. We first visited Chester Zoo, however the capacity wasn't large enough and we would have had to compromise on the wedding breakfast and evening

entertainment, which we weren't prepared to do. We’d relocated to Yorkshire after graduation and Hayden took me to Yorkshire Wildlife Park for my 25th birthday. We loved the park, so I decided to search as to whether they were licensed for weddings - they were. The rest is history really. We attended one of The Crown’s wedding open days, as they provided the ideal combination of a unique wedding ceremony, in partnership with Yorkshire Wildlife Park, followed by a more traditional breakfast and reception at the hotel. For us, this was the perfect marriage (pardon the pun) of components, and the events team were simply fantastic, especially Tori and Antonia. So as to not break tradition, Hayden and his groomsmen stayed at another location – to ensure we didn't bump into each other in the morning – and I spent the evening in a beautiful room, before transferring to the bridal suite, which The Crown went out of their way to ensure was ready in time for me to get dressed and have photos in, prior to the ceremony. Both families had stayed the night before and the bridal party booked to have hair and makeup done by the wonderful team at the Vanilla Rooms. This was perfect, as we could go down in our pyjamas and didn't have to worry about leaving the hotel, and Tanisha and

may just provide the answer. The team are exceptional, and will work hard to ensure everything runs smoothly, and we’re truly thankful for their input - they both come highly recommended. We’d like to thank everyone involved - it truly was the best day of our lives - and have to extend a massive thank you to Matthew Zaremba, our wedding co-ordinator at YWP, who was outstanding. We would also like to thank our photographers, Avenue White, and our videographer, Andrew Cotter.
‘
Jess were outstanding from start to finish – they made everyone look wonderful. The majority of guests were also staying Saturday evening, so we arranged for a vintage bus to collect and take them to YWP and back, meaning cars/overnight bags could remain at the hotel and people could make the most of the drinks reception after the ceremony. I travelled in a vintage car with my dad and the ceremony itself was held in the Outlook suite – which had views overlooking the entire park. It's a lovely blank space and White Rose Occasions worked with me to dress it – the room was almost unrecognisable and looked beautiful. After the ceremony, Hayden and I had the chance to feed both the lemurs and the giraffes - an experience neither of us will forget - and during this time our guests were free to explore the park, or we had a reserved area where drinks and canopies were served. We then travelled back to The Crown for the wedding breakfast and reception. Again, the room was dressed beautifully by White Rose Occasions, and, having had a zoo wedding, I wanted to continue the theme in the venue, therefore I had some unique ideas for animal themed floral centrepieces. I worked with Claire and the team at Bawtry Flowers for these, and they were just beautiful. The flowers really captured my 'animal in a jungle theme' and brought that little touch of the YWP back to The Crown. The wedding breakfast, put simply, was incredible. The package included a six course meal – the highlight for me being the beef Wellington – and it was great that our guests had a choice of starters and mains. Certainly not the ‘like it or lump it’ option you’re presented with at many weddings. The food just kept coming and the trio of desserts meant, again, there was something for everyone. The cheese and biscuits finished everything off nicely and the evening guests did not go hungry either, as there was a full BBQ menu served outside in the beautiful secret garden. Where Hayden and I were able to have a second photo shoot while the room was being turned over for the evening reception. Evening entertainment was provided by the fantastic Nolan Band and the Crown's inhouse DJ, Nathan. I am very fortunate that my sister’s boyfriend is the guitarist in the band, so I always wanted them to play for Hayden and I on our big day, and though there was paperwork to complete, The Crown were extremely accommodating. Nathan also read the crowd well. We had quite a young wedding, mainly consisting of our friends, rather than a large amount of family, and he picked up on this, ensuring the dance floor was full until 1am. The Crown was the perfect venue for Hayden and I and if you are looking for something slightly out of the ordinary on your big day, the Yorkshire Wildlife Park package

EATING OUT
Classical Italian CHRIS WILSON SAMPLES COLOSSEO, A RESTAURANT THAT OOZES THE TASTE AND ATMOSPHERE OF ITS ROMAN HERITAGE. s you’d expect of a restaurant whose very name conjures up vision of the oval amphitheatre that dominates the Eternal City of Rome, everything about Colosseo is on a grand scale. The venue, which was a pub close to Belle Vue football ground before Doncaster Rovers moved to their new stadium, was abandoned and unloved for a spell before being transformed into an impressive, bustling restaurant. With high ceiling, a long bar, feature brick wall and a big open-plan kitchen there is room to breathe, making Colosseo an ideal spot for celebrations. Meanwhile, sculptures and traditional Roman artwork leave no doubt as to what type of cuisine is on offer. If you have a favourite Italian dish it will feature here, on a substantial menu that covers all the classic pasta, seafood and meat dishes you could wish for. There’s a cracking wine list too, not massive but almost exclusively Italian and very reasonably priced with lots of mouthwatering whites and reds on offer in the £15 to £25 bracket. We’ll explore those more fully on our next visit. Seeing as I was designated driver and my friend Glynn had an early start for his job as an archaeologist (which, disappointingly, seems to be more about preparing bland
A
brownfield sites for new-build homes than Indiana Jones-style adventures searching for hidden treasures while defeating hordes of Nazis armed only with a bullwhip and a battered fedora) we took it steady. Nevertheless, a glass of the rich and fruity house Merlot was the ideal companion for my starter, a hearty plate of pork ribs (£5.10) so tender they fell off the bone if you gave them a hard stare, smothered in moreish spicy sweet and sour sauce. Glynn declared the calamari fritti (£5.70) to be perfectly cooked, the tiny tender tentacles coated in the crispest, crunchiest batter and served with a tangy dipping sauce. For mains I selected from a list of chef ’s specialities and a splendid version of mare alla ella (£15.95), a bowl of seafood spaghetti with strands of black pasta smothered in a tangy baby prawn, tomato and garlic sauce and a very generous selection of ultra-fresh, scallops, mussels and pan-fried king prawns, accompanied by a glass of rose. Glynn chose another classic dish, filleto agnella (£15.95) and was quick to remark on the tender, succulent fillet of lamb in a tasty red wine reduction served with aubergine, red onion, mint and garic served with lovely crisp French fries. Another drop of the Merlot was just the ticket here. Desserts again cover the classics and it was
fun to see a little bit of theatre at an adjoining table as a waiter lit a tumbler of Amaretto to pour over an ice-cream pancake. I settled for an old-school portion of tiramisu (£5.10) while Glynn sated his sweet tooth with an indulgent wedge of salted caramel cheesecake (£4.95). Coffee, as you’d expect in a restaurant where it’s all about paying tribute to classic Italian cuisine, was spot-on, and after a couple of excellent espressos (£1.70) we were on our way. Delizioso! EATING OUT
Jewel of the Crown SMART, CHIC AND SERIOUSLY GOOD FOOD. RACHEL MARTIN IS IMPRESSED BY THE THE BISTRO AT THE CROWN HOTEL. ho doesn’t love steak? Vegetarians permitting, obviously, but a good steak is often the bellwether of a very good bistro. In fact, over the last week my partner has consumed just over one and a half kilos of steak (no he’s not on the Atkins diet, he’s just plain greedy) and midway into his ‘kilos of meat week’, we found ourselves at The Crown, on the promise of a quality slab of beef the size of his head. Chef Caz has overseen the Crown kitchen for more than 30 years, and the Bawtry-based hotel and restaurant has certainly become a popular haunt for those looking for tantalising dishes that bring together some of the best seasonal ingredients. So you’d forgive them for sticking to what they know best, right? Wrong. They’ve never been content with resting on their successes. Inside, there is a harmonious mix of country house and cosmopolitan-chic décor, and the restaurant is split into three areas: a bar, a buzzy dining area, and a more intimate nook at the back, where we opted for a seat. We started the evening with a flowery glass of Fantinel prosecco (£5.95) – a very good recommendation from our waitress, followed by a harmonious, refined appetiser of potted pulled pork and wild boar parfait (£7.95). The parfait was smooth and unctuous, the pulled pork providing a beautifully distinctive smoked tang, and the fruity savours of the homemade apple and maple syrup jam perfectly complemented the crunch of the

toasted Welbeck bakery sourdough. My partner’s made-in-Bawtry soup of the day (£5.95) was equally pleasing; hearty and smooth, it was another intriguing combination, this time of broccoli, piquancy and creaminess. An unfeasibly glossy roast rack of lamb (£19.95) was showcased in all its glory on the next plate. Flavoursome, blushing meat was daintily plated and paired with herby brioche crumb, dauphinoise potatoes and buttered kale, visibly bleeding flavour into a sweet and salty redcurrant sauce – every bite was savoured carefully. Now, onto my partner’s beautifully tender 20oz T-bone (£29.95). Served with skin-on fries, beer-battered onion rings, grilled cherry tomatoes, mushrooms and peppercorn sauce, it was the sort of thing open-top tourist buses should stop in front of – a serious piece of meat, imbued with a deep ferric tang only 30 days’ aging can bring. Soft and smoky, and served medium rare, the rind offered a rich, seasonal silkiness, properly seared until the ribbon of fat gave a light crack beneath your teeth. My partner described it as “the finest steak I’ve had all week” and I could only nod in agreement – my mouth still waters when I think of that chargrilled outer crust. With that delicious slab of beef hogging most of the table, there was little room for much else, but we did opt for a side of golden in all the right places, truffle oil fries (£7.95),
dusted with parmesan. To finish, we shared, with only one clash of forks, a long-standing Crown favourite – the dessert platter (£9.95). A true sight to behold, the Eton mess was lavished with fresh strawberries and a dusting of meringue – the crunchy flakes soaking up the berry compote and whipped cream. The deep-baked Bakewell tart allowed the layers of jam to sing out and the dense but extremely moist chocolate brownie, coupled with clotted cream, caramel and honeycomb ice cream, provided an undeniably sweet ending to a very satisfying evening. Put simply, this is serious food, packed with serious flavour. In fact, it’s easy to forget you’re in a hotel at all, which might make it a little easier to leave if you don’t have a room booked. ummer came and went in a flash, and now, as the children return to school and the iconic William Hill St Leger Festival is just around the corner, we look towards autumn. The St Leger Festival has a very positive impact in Bawtry and the annual St Leger Preview Dinner, the only one of its kind, will take place at the Crown Hotel on 12 September. Racing pundits will be dishing out tips for the days ahead, and, as the racing gets underway, racegoers will flock each evening to Bawtry to celebrate – or commiserate. There’s been a handful of new additions and changes in Bawtry over the summer. Our warmest wishes got to & She Knows, who made the move from the Courtyard to Swan Street, Down Quilt House Interiors, who took up residence in Dower House Square, Jo Pollard’s Aesthetics, based in Milanda’s, Revolver Menswear and Beckham and Burrell. We also welcome The Market Bar, The Town House Bar and Restaurant, El Toro Tapas Bar, and The Gift Box, who made a return and can be found in the old Cycle Works premises. Looking ahead this month, there will be a chance to meet Tim Cotterill and his unique bronze frog sculptures at Limited 2 Art and Elvis will also be back in town, as Gordon
www.visitbawtry.com Hendricks takes to the stage at China Rose. Last, but by no means least, the 25th Robinsons of Bawtry charity fashion show will take place at China Rose on 1 October. Congratulations need to go to Gordon Tulley, who organised the fifth Classic, Historic & Supercar Pageant which took place on the 27 August. The event raised vital funds for Respect Carers Charity, a charity which Gordon has helped to raise thousands for over the last five years. As always, don’t forget to visit www.visitbawtry.com to be the first to hear about exclusive offers, events and competitions, and tell your friends about your visit and join in the conversation on Facebook and Twitter. Finally, pop a date in your diary, as The Bawtry Christmas Event will take place on 26 November and will be bigger and better than ever.

Why The Employment Tribunal Fees Ruling May Not Be So Simple The new ruling that employment tribunal fees are illegal and should be refunded to everyone charged them since 2013, may not be simple for the Employment Tribunals Service to apply, according to Jones & Co Solicitors. With Britain's highest court ruling that the fees contravene both EU and UK law and are discriminatory against women, the process of refunding the thousands of people who have paid the fees, and dealing with those who would have taken a claim if the fees had not been in place, could be complicated, according to Andrew Bevan, Partner and employment law expert at the North Nottinghamshire and South Yorkshire law firm. The ruling requires the Government to refund up to £32 million to people charged for taking their claims to tribunal since July 2013, when the fees were introduced. Unison, the UK's largest trade union, won the case after arguing that the fees of up to £1,200 discriminated against workers. The Ministry of Justice has said the Government will
take immediate steps to stop charging employment tribunal fees and refund those who have paid. Andrew Bevan said: "I believe the Employment Tribunals Service has its' work cut out. Thought will need to be given to an immediate rewriting of the tribunal rules, and a reprogramming of the online Claim Form system. "The Supreme Court made it clear that all fees paid between 2013 and now will have to be refunded but this is easier said than done. Many successful claims will have had fees ordered to be paid by the respondent, or the employer, and there will probably need to be a manual trawl of all decided cases. This will take some time to sort out. "I also question what will happen to everyone who chose not to bring a claim because of the fees. Will tribunals be amenable to the argument that it was not reasonably practicable to bring a claim when a claimant was significantly impeded from doing so by an unlawful fees regime? Or that following today's decision it is just and equitable to extend time for bringing a claim? Whatever happens in due course will need to be well thought through and offer an
appropriate way forward for claimants and respondents. "I think it is unlikely the fees regime will be abolished entirely. It is most probable that the government will issue a consultation paper and then bring in a new fees regime, with fees at a lower level or involve a fee payable by the employer when the employer lodges its defence." Catch the Bawtry buzz From the St Leger to top-quality shopping, there’s always lots going on.
T
his autumn, why not make Bawtry your big discovery? In many ways, of course, Bawtry needs no discovery. Known as the 'gateway to Yorkshire', it is one of Doncaster’s most affluent suburbs, and historically, it was a pivotal settlement on the Great North Road, which ran from London to Edinburgh. As far back as the fifth century, Bawtry has been something of a traveller’s rest, even Swan Street was named after one of the oldest and largest of the coaching inns, and the remains of the Dovecot building can still be seen in The Courtyard today - just one reminder of Bawtry’s rich history. Nowadays, the affluent market town is home to around 3,200 residents, and is a key shopping and tourism magnet, thanks to its gloriously preserved market square, unique, designer boutiques, and a social scene that is stylish, sassy and right on trend. At the heart of the town is The Crown Hotel, a premier location for short breaks, business, socialising and special occasions. The independently owned 4* hotel offers a rare blend of country house and cosmopolitan-chic décor, coupled with a warm and friendly service, delicious food and contemporary bar. For the discerning shopper, Market Square,
The Courtyard and Dower House Square are home to a host of exclusive boutiques and leading brands, including Mulberry, Hugo Boss, Armani, Ralph Lauren, Belstaff, Eton, Jacob Cohen, Jeffery West, Michael Kors, Escada, Joseph Ribkoff, Roberto Cavalli and Max Mara. Bawtry’s buzz is contagious, and new bars and restaurants are opening every month, serving everything from afternoon tea to tapas. There’s over 20 stylish bars and restaurants waiting to serve you, including wine and cocktail bars, traditional English pubs, elegant tea rooms and coffee shops, a steakhouse and pizzeria, tapas bar, Italian and Indian bistros, and one of the best Cantonese restaurants in the region. And, for drinkers and diners intent on soaking up some of the Yorkshire sunshine, many boast charming outdoor seating areas. A rich blend culture is on show in the two leading art galleries, which regularly host meet the artist events, and you’ll often find Bawtry abuzz with live music and entertainment, including the annual Robinsons of Bawtry charity fashion show, and the ever-popular monthly Showtime evenings, which see leading tribute acts sell-out the China Rose. There’s always something going on in Bawtry, whether it’s The Visit Bawtry Polo Cup, the esteemed Boxing Day hunt, or one of the
biggest and most prestigious race weeks in British horse racing, The St Leger Festival. As the racing gets underway, racegoers flock each evening to Bawtry to celebrate - or commiserate, and in the lead up to the festival, there are ladies and gents making last minute preparations, thanks to a wealth of hair and beauty salons. The St Leger Preview Dinner, the only one of its kind, also takes place at the Crown Hotel, bringing together the best in the business to give you insider tips and information. Though it may stand on the River Idle, the townsfolk are anything but, and today they are determined to raise the profile and reputation of Bawtry as a prestigious destination town. Bawtry Retail Association represent BRA members, to increase foot-flow and encourage shoppers to utilise a wider range of the Bawtry shopping and night-life experience. W
th a new season upon us, it is time to prepare our wardrobes for the autunm/winter season – selecting the most fabulous outfits to ensure we are on trend and looking our best, of course. A great place to start is with the new Roberto Cavalli autumn/winter collection at Incognito of Bawtry. The boutique is one of the best places to view what’s on trend for the up-coming season, and whilst you may be tempted to stock up on autumnal yellows, browns and oranges, green is said to be the key colour to be seen in. Fashion boutique Incognito will be celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2018, making it one of the longest-established fashion houses in the area. So, what is the secret of their success? Owners Jackie and Bernie say: “Our ethos has always been the same; stocking the smartest brands of the moment, to provide a good service and to take the hassle out of getting your wardrobe right on trend for which ever occasion happens to be in your social calendar. “Our collections are chosen with clients in mind. We believe it’s our dedication and personalised service, along with a great choice of brands that keep our clients

coming back time and time again.” Whether you are looking for office wear or evening wear, the boutique offers looks for all occasions. As well as the new Cavilli collection, the store’s designer brands include, Airfield, Laurel and Sportalm to name a few. They are also delighted to introduce a new Italian collection by Guess. Marciano is sharp, comes in some great fabrics and is very wearable. Scapa is also a perfect example of the fashionable tailored country wear look and is very ‘of the moment.’ “We’re proud to bring cutting-edge fashion to Bawtry,” adds Jackie. “After 30 years in the business, we are so wellrespected by our clients and by the fashion industry.” Incognito is open Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 430pm. Better by design With its eclectic selection of hand-picked items, Etc…Etc…Etc is a dream come true for Elaine Thorpe.
F
or over a decade, Etc…Etc…Etc has been offering residents of the twelvth century market town of Bawtry, a unique and stylish collection of handmade cards, gifts, jewellery and home accessories. After working with Doncaster Council for over 27 years, Elaine Thorpe had always dreamt of owning her own shop that stocked unusual and design-led products. “I just got to a point and decided it was time to quit my job and follow my passion. I love my shops, customers and everything that I sell and couldn’t be happier that I took the plunge,” said Elaine. The business has two branches; one in Bawtry and a bigger branch at the Yorkshire Wildlife Park, but you don’t have to visit the
animals to take advantage of the wide selection at the Wildlife Park branch. With its quirky and international range, Elaine and her team have worked hard to bring customers an irresistible collection of products. “Etc is constantly growing and evolving. We have loyal customers who have been with us since day one and our Etc Bawtry Facebook page is getting busier too. Every week we get something new in the shop, to keep it fresh and exciting for our customers.” You’ll find a unique selection of accessories from big brand names such as Emma Bridgewater, Lampe Berger, Jelly Cat, East of India, Sia, Parlane International and many more. They have everything from beautiful handmade cards by Five Dollar Shake, to gorgeously framed mirrors and clocks. BANK BACKS DEVELOPMENT OF BAWTRY HALL
Adam Jolley of Cambridge & Counties and Jason Cooper (right) at Bawtry Hall
Property bank Cambridge & Counties has once again backed an entrepreneur who is developing Bawtry Hall in Yorkshire. Cambridge & Counties funded the original 2014 purchase of the former country house by Jason Cooper and its first phases of renewal. Now the bank has once again backed Mr Cooper by agreeing the equity release of £1.3m, which will be invested in the ongoing refurbishment of the hall. The 50,000 sq ft Bawtry Hall has a fascinating history, serving the Royal Air Force from 1941 to 1984, first as a HQ for Bomber Command during and after the Second World War; then as Strike Command HQ up to and including the later stages of the Cold War. Mr Cooper bought the hall for £1.65m and, following a substantial renovation programme, the hall is once again an integral part of the Bawtry community, with more than 20 businesses working out of the offices and the 15 luxury apartments fully let. The next wave of renovation is eight more apartments and there is a waiting list of occupiers keen to move in. Bawtry Hall is also set to become a luxury wedding venue in 2018. The whole property is now valued in excess of £7m.

New team at the helm of The Crown after £5m buy-out.
C
raig Dowie, managing director at The Crown Hotel, has partnered with Jason Cooper and Dave Pain, the owners of Bawtry Hall, to acquire The Crown Hotel from the previous shareholders in a £5m deal. Craig has been MD of the Crown for the past 13 years, along with the Rutland Hotel in Sheffield, and early last year the opportunity arose to buy out his existing business partners, who wanted to concentrate on commercial property in Sheffield. As a resut, the Cooper, Dowie, Pain partnership was born, a partnership which, according to Dowie’s son, Alexander, managing director of Keyhole Creative Media, is set to enhance Bawtry’s position as one of the leading leisure destinations in Yorkshire. “I am delighted to become a director of The Crown Hotel and will use this opportunity to ensure not only The Crown and Bawtry Hall are fully supported, but also Bawtry as leading tourism destination, ” he said. Bawtry Hall was purchased by Jason in 2014 and, following a substantial renovation

programme, the building is now home to more than 20 businesses and 15 luxury residential apartments. Jason simultaneously held discussions with Craig Dowie on how the Crown could work with Bawtry Hall, with its superb Georgian façade, magnificent rooms, high ceilings and five acres of beautiful gardens, to create a unique luxury wedding venue. Jason was so impressed with the team at The Crown that it was agreed they would lease Bawtry Hall and the gardens to create the ultimate wedding venue. This was concluded in conjunction with The Crown acquisition and Bawtry Hall will be open as a luxury wedding venue in the spring of 2018, and will be taking bookings from 18

hristmas is not to be missed this year in Bawtry, as the town promises to be merry, bright and full of festive cheer. The annual Christmas event held in the picturesque market town is in its fourth year and will take place on Sunday 26 November between noon and 6pm, and will be the biggest and best yet. “The team have been working hard to ensure that our 2017 event is full of festive cheer and has lots for all ages to enjoy,” said Rebecca Dickenson, Bawtry Retail Association. “In addition to all our stalls and attractions, most of the town’s independent shops will remain in the Christmas spirit with late night openings giving visitors’ endless opportunities and inspiration for that perfect present and home decoration.” 26 | www.visitbawtry.com
Over 40 stalls and catering outlets will cluster in the Market Place, Dower House Square, the Church Hall and the Courtyard selling unique gift ideas alongside a selection of mouth-watering, festive foods. The town’s retailers range from designer clothing boutiques, art galleries, gift shops, and home accessories - so there’s something to suit all tastes. That’s not all, as for the day the town will be home to fairground rides and a traditional carousel kindly sponsored by the Bawtry Town Council. There will be a host of live music entertainment throughout the evening along with a viewing area for the spectacular Womack’s of Bawtry Christmas window unveiling, which is a Bawtry Christmas tradition, taking place at 5pm.
The fun doesn’t stop there as other attractions include an army climbing wall, a visit by Father Christmas, performances by the Dance Space and the Phoenix Theatre plus characters from GP Princess Appearances. There will also be a free car park and ride bus service courtesy of Wilfreda Beehive available from Hudson’s Yard. “Huge thanks go out to everyone who has contributed so far to make plans for such a special event, especially to our sponsors the Bawtry Town Council, One Call Insurance and Wilfreda Beehive. EATING OUT |
www.visitbawtry.com
Town house delights Hannah Sanders samples the menu at the refurbished Town House Bar and Restaurant in Bawtry. t was a sunny Sunday morning and my partner and I were looking forward to a leisurely drive and a relaxing afternoon lunch at the Town House Bar and Restaurant. Unfortunately we had failed to factor in some major M1 disruptions, so it was a case of life in the slow lane and a 90-minute delay before road works and orange bollards gave way to vivid red brollies and a cluster of contemporary tables and colourful cushions, signalling the fact that our frustrations were at an end and it was time to enjoy the good life, Bawtry-style. The bustling Market Place was thronged with people soaking up the sunshine while enjoying an alfresco tipple or two. Meanwhile inside, it was difficult to know where to look first due to the eccentric décor, which I immediately fell in love with. From stripy wallpaper comprising every colour of the rainbow, to plush velvet stools by the bar and luminous mirrors, I felt like I was Alice stepping into wonderland. It doesn’t stop there either, as when we were led to our table, we were surrounded by vintage copper mirrors, deep blue and copper
I
vases and walls livened up with blocks of colour. The popular Town House Bar and Restaurant, has recently transformed itself from a traditional tea room, to a stylish bar and restaurant, with the lunch menu boasting an extensive selection from a classic fillet steak, fish and chips right through to a selection of gourmet sandwiches and salads along with a specials board which featured a traditional Sunday roast. My dining companion, chose the Town House burger (£12.95) and coke (£2.50), served on a slate and consisting of a fillet steak burger,Yorkshire relish, house slaw and a generous portion of hand cut, triple cooked chunky chips. The hand pressed burger was delightfully tender, oozing with Monterey jack cheese and covered in soft, fresh toasted pretzel bun. I went for the chicken and bacon gourmet club sandwich (£10.95) and Estrella (£4.50), served on crispy ciabatta bread, and layered with sliced plum tomatoes, cos lettuce and a helping of mayonnaise. The pan fried roast chicken was succulent and the perfect contrast to the dry cured bacon. The dish was finished
with a side salad drizzled with balsamic vinegar, and a side of sweet potato fries (£2.95). We washed down our mains with a hazelnut Americano (£2.25, 50p for syrup), and a latte (£2.25), made with Town house’s own blend which had a rich, smooth taste. After a brief respite, we sampled some of the outstanding homemade desserts. I chose the raspberry Bakewell tart (£5.95), served with vanilla custard, raspberry tears and strawberry coulis, and it almost looked too good to eat. We were blown away by my companion’s salted caramel chocolate mousse (£5.95). Presented in a Kilner jar, with a puddle of chocolate mud, crisp chocolate pebbles and topped with popping candy it was the winner of the afternoon. The Town House Bar and Restaurant, a member of Deliciously Yorkshire and committed to using local produce, offers a perfect lunchtime retreat if you are looking for a relaxing afternoon in the heart of Bawtry. 9-13 Market Place, Bawtry, Doncaster DN10 6JL Tel: 01302 719397

CHECK OUT THE DELICIOUS RANGE OF AWARD-WINNING PREMIUM GINS EXCLUSIVELY DISTILLED IN DONCASTER.
The best of Brittains f all the spirits, gin is the one most commonly associated with England. Gin-drinking became hugely popular in England in the 17th century, when the government allowed unlicensed gin production, whilst imposing heavy taxes on other forms of alcohol such as French brandy. This made gin more widely available for everyone and the gin craze swept the nation. Fast-forward to the 21st century, and a number of artisan gins can be found at some of the best bars around – and thankfully for us, the standard and flavour of the spirit is eons ahead of what it was in the 17th century. Brittains is one of the latest companies to get its distillery gin-spired and is proud to unveil its brand new premium gin. Already a huge hit in the world of vodka, it won’t be long before the gin receives accolades and rave reviews of its own. The Doncaster-based company recently won silver in the International Spirit Challenge 2017 (ISC) for its premium five-time distilled vodka. The spirit was up against more than 1,300 entries from nearly 70 countries worldwide, making ISC a truly global competition. ISC is supported by many of the world's leading spirits producers as the international standard for quality and excellence. An experienced panel of specialist judges deemed Brittains vodka amongst just a handful of the best in the world. Brittains first started producing vodka in 2010. It all started when husband and wife team, John and Fiona Raper, created a flavoured vodka using raspberries from their
O
friends, Richard and Judy Brittain, who own Eastfield Farm near Tickhill. Using Richard’s raspberries and a recipe developed in the Raper’s Sprotbrough kitchen, Fiona made a batch of flavoured vodka. The spirit was a big hit with their friends – so much so that they decided to take the next step and produce it commercially. And Brittains vodka was born. Experimentation with flavours and John’s vision for expanding the product range has led to 10 more flavours including cherry, butterscotch and chilli chocolate vodka – the last rapidly becoming their best-seller. These flavours now come in a premium range, alongside their award-winning a five time distilled vodka. Hard work and perseverance has seen John steadily build the business to where it is today. The product has evolved from a single flavour
offered initially through local-based businesses to outlets far and wide including some illustrious establishments and retailer outlets. A lot of Brittains’ business is done via the internet and online sales have seen their vodka shipped as far afield as Switzerland and France. They also supply to a number of restaurants, bars and pubs of geographical range. Much like its sister spirits, Brittains premium gin has a rich smooth and luxurious flavour. Its secret recipe of interesting botanicals, distinctive juniper and a twist of citrus are sure to win the hearts of many a gin connoisseur. With such a wide range of exciting vodka flavours on offer, more gorgeous gins are sure to follow.

Fresh and healthy CHRIS WILSON ENJOYS A CURRY WITH A DIFFERENCE AT ZARA’S. eep in the heart of one of South Yorkshire’s sleepier villages, something subtle, spicy and slightly different is stirring. At first glance Zara’s in Tickhill may appear to be a fairly typical Indian restaurant. In fact, as we cast an eye over a very familiar looking menu, offering dishes that are available in most of the Indian restaurants across the region, it was difficult to see how the bold claim on the menu to be “the cutting edge of Indian cuisine” could be justified. Everything was cosy and familiar, and there’s nothing wrong with that. But as the meal progressed it became clear that while Zara’s is not reinventing the wheel, there is a fresh and innovative approach to all the dishes they deliver that makes it stand out from the crowd. It was my friend Martin, something of a connoisseur and a veteran of countless curry encounters, who put his finger on it. “Nothing’s greasy,” he said. “They’ve obviously taken a lot of care to reduce the oil and make everything healthier.” They had, too, but without sacrificing any taste. Everything we ordered had a clean, sharp flavour hit and was not too rich, so that moment when you stagger back from the
D
table and realise you have ordered far too many side dishes just never arrived. We started in traditional style with a couple of crisp papadums (£0.80 each) and a nicely zesty pickle tray. Two chilled bottles of Kingfisher (£3.20 each) helped us to feel right at home. For starters we shared a vegetable mixed starter (£4.40), a comforting ‘greatest hits’ mix of samosa, onion bhaji, vegetable pakora and alu chop, and a king prawn bhaji puree (£5.50) with very fresh prawns of a very decent size. It was a case of ‘down memory lane’ as we selected a wine to go with our main courses. Martin was keen to renew an acquaintance with Goyenacha Chardonnay (£16.95), an Argentinian beverage he remembered drinking in significant quantities back in the 1980s and 90s. As we savoured the clean, sharp flavours it occurred to me this had not been an entirely wasted youth. It was certainly a good companion for our main courses of Rajistani lamb (£10.90) and Jhal Jhinga £11.90), both dishes coming with a ‘hot and spicy’ warning. They were certainly both very tasty dishes and the key components (more of those lovely prawns and lot of lean tender lamb) were bang up to the
mark, but on a personal level we could have taken the chilli heat up a notch on both main courses, but perhaps the good people of Tickhill prefer a slightly less robust ruby. The all-important side dishes were spot on. We shared a lovely flaky buttery paratha ((£3.40), mushroom pilau (£3.40) and saag paneer (£3.90). With mango and pistachio culfi (£2.50 each), the deliciously refreshing Indian icecream, to cool things down and settle our stomachs, this was a meal that looked like being rather familiar but turned out to be unexpectedly different, for all the right reasons. Looks lively… THE BUZZING BAWTRY’S BAR AND BRASSERIE IS A LOCAL FAVOURITE – AND WITH GOOD REASON, WRITES CHRIS WILSON. ith a prime location in the heart of town and a tried and tested menu of crowd-pleasing classics, quiet days are few and far between at Bawtry’s Bar & Brasserie. We dropped in for a midweek dinner in mid-August, prime holiday season for many and a time of year when many local restaurateurs polish the cutlery, watch the tumbleweed roll past and consider another night of early closing. Not here. With a large birthday celebration in one of the cosy snugs, and couples basking in the summer sunshine outside, there was a very pleasant buzz of activity. Bawtry’s is a cafe/brasserie by day and a bar/restaurant by night, with live music at weekends and a wide selection of wines, premium spirits, cocktails and some well-kept real ales. When it comes to food there are no surprises but we could not fail to be impressed by the quality of what was on offer and also the cheerful enthusiasm of the bright young team behind the bar and waiting at tables. If you like a well-kept pint the Timothy Taylor’s Landlord (£3.60) is in very good order, the perfect thirst-quencher while contemplating the menu. We started with Thai fishcakes and sweet chilli dip (£7.25) and piri piri chicken skewers (£7.75). Both were bursting with flavour and the chicken, in particular, was
W
outstandingly tender and packed just the right chilli punch. For mains there are some very tempting pizza and burger options but my heart was set on a steak. There are many cuts available and all are hung for a minimum of 28 days. I’m no food scientist so I can’t be sure what this does, but I can tell you that my mighty hunk of medium-rare sirloin had a fabulous salty, char-grilled taste, and just the right amount of chew. I succumbed to the surf & turf option (£24.95) which came with a mound of chilli king prawns and first rate trimmings – proper chips, crisp on the outside and fluffy within. Throw in ale battered onion rings, Portobello mushroom, slow roasted tomato and rocket salad and you have a proper feast. A large glass of Spanish Malbec (£6), slightly peppery and with a beautifully dark colour, proved the perfect pairing. My companion wanted a main that was full of flavour and not too heavy and was hugely impressed with the Thai salmon and king prawn salad. The salmon, in a spicy deep red glaze sprinkled with sesame seeds, looked a picture, had a lovely moist texture and tasted terrific. Attractively presented on a bed of colourful salad, with coleslaw and prawns on the side, this was another winner with another great wine, a large glass of Pinot Grigiot (£6) to keep it company. Desserts are most definitely in the comfort food category. There are certain rules for
sticky toffee pudding (£5.95) as far as I’m concerned. The sponge must not be too heavy, there can’t be any stinginess when it comes to caramel sauce and there must be the option of simple pouring cream to top the whole thing off (ice-cream being a sweet taste too far and custard being just plain wrong). Bawtry’s Brasserie ticks all the boxes. Across the table a suitably gooey chocolate brownie with ice-cream (£5.95) earned more enthusiastic responses. It’s a cornerstone of the town’s vibrant social scene... and as long as Bawtry’s Bar & Brasserie maintains this impressive combination of good food and drink in a lively setting that does not look likely to change. Lunch stop PHOEBE SEYMOUR HITS THE GREAT NORTH ROAD AND FINDS A BITE TO EAT IN AN UNLIKELY LOCATION – A CARAVAN SHOWROOM. hen thinking of somewhere to eat for lunch, a caravan showroom might be the last place you would consider, but just as many of us would visit a garden centre for the café alone, the same could be said for Yorkshire Caravans on Great North Road. The coffee shop, known as Classic & Contemporary Cakes Co, is a destination in its own right. Not content to just be an afterthought once you are done perusing camping equipment, their menu has everything from simple sandwiches, to hearty dishes that would be expected of a traditional pub – as well as some amazing cakes and bakes of course. My sister and I arrived on a sunny, blueskied day and were greeted by a gorgeous blue caravan with an illustration of a pin-up girl on it and a collection of gleaming metal sculptures – a nice view from the decking, which was lined with tables. Inside, we were met with the scent of warm sandwiches and the sight of scones. Seated in a cosy corner by the window, I ordered a pot of English tea (£1.85) and my thirsty companion had a pint of diet coke (£2). After looking through one of the longest
W

sandwich menus I have ever seen, my sister decided on the BBQ chicken, jalapenos and cheese panini (£7.45) and having been told the confit belly pork (£11.95) was one of their most popular specials, I had to find out what all the fuss was about. Being the type of girl who opts for the spicier dishes on a Mexican menu, my sister was delighted to find her warm and crisp panini generously filled with hot jalapenos, balanced with sweet BBQ sauce and cool strong cheddar, and complemented by tender chunks of chicken. This came with a fresh green salad and crinkle cut salted crisps. Meanwhile, I was impressed with my square of belly pork on a bed of smooth and creamy wholegrain mustard mash potato, surrounded by a colourful combination of carrots, string beans and mini sweetcorn and covered in a thick, rich, apple cider gravy. Because the apple cider was in the gravy, its sweet flavour could be tasted throughout the pork whilst the crackling was satisfyingly crunchy. I heard a lady on the next table exclaim, “I won’t be needing any tea tonight!” I wholeheartedly agreed. For dessert, I ordered the Terry’s chocolate orange cake (£3.45) and my sister opted for
the cherry scone (£2.85). Whilst she was building her scone in the Cornish style (jam first, clotted cream dolloped on top), I was in raptures over my moist chocolate cake with layers of milk chocolate sauce running through it and a jug of double cream on the side. As we let our food settle and gazed at the sculptures out the window, I realised The Classic & Contemporary Cake Co really is onto something. Whether you are after a light lunch, something more substantial or just a good slab of cake, Yorkshire Caravans is the place to come. Come to think of it, I would quite like a caravan now. AUTUMN PREVIEW
The Colour of Light
Rita, Sue and Bob Too
ast, Doncaster’s flagship theatre, has announced its new season of work, taking the venue through a sparkling end to 2017 with this year’s annual pantomime Beauty and the Beast. The season will be the first to be overseen by new director Deborah Rees and sees the return of English Touring Theatre, Music in the Round and Handmade Theatre. Opening the season is a surrealist musical about the takeover of technology, Golem (5 – 9 Sep) by 1927. A technical marvel, this ingenious production sees projection and live-action working seamlessly to re-create a Burton-esque world in which the story is set. Following last year’s outdoor spectacular Clash of Drums, Cast promises to wow Doncaster once again with yet another free event The Colour of Light (22 Sep) which will see kaleidoscopic wheels rolled through the town centre before an explosive finale outside the theatre. The theatre is calling on members of the public to get involved in making the production happen as dancers and volunteer stewards; for more

information visit their website. Cast once again presents a season packed with laughs featuring the nation’s greatest comics and emerging stand-up talent. Alongside its monthly Comedy Club which offers a night of the best touring comedy for just £10.50, Cast’s headline comedy acts include Paul Foot (15 Sep), Jimmy Tarbuck (8 Oct), German Comedy Ambassador Henning Wehn (19 Oct) and Doncaster favourite Mark Thomas (1 Nov). October also sees the return of English Touring Theatre for Conor McPherson’s The Weir (3 – 7 Oct). Set in an Irish pub, this modern classic charts a night of spooky tales from the patrons before one story unsettles them all beyond expectation. Fans of The Woman in Black which toured to Cast earlier in the year will no doubt appreciate, there’s nothing quite like a chilling ghost story told on stage. 2017 has featured Cast’s most ambitious community and family engagement programme since the theatre’s opening, and this October half term (29 Oct – 4 Nov) Cast’s Family Festival takes over its spaces
for a week of kids activities and shows for little ones. Later in the year, theatre royalty Max Safford Clarke will revive his iconic production Rita, Sue and Bob Too (7 – 11 Nov) in partnership with the Bolton Octagon and The Royal Court Theatre. This gritty, northern story unearths and breathes new life into Andrea Dunbar’s semiautobiographical play. The season comes to a close with Cast’s pantomime Beauty and the Beast (1 – 31 Dec), which is the UK’s only fully British Sign Language integrated pantomime and performed throughout December. The theatre has put extra shows on sale to meet demand. Alongside its pantomime, Cast presents a festive show for little ones, this year The Great Christmas Dig (9 – 31 Dec) in which children under 7 can discover the stories behind our most treasured festive traditions. n a small Irish town, the locals exchange stories round the crackling fire of Brendan’s pub to while away the hours one stormy night. As the beer and whisky flows, the arrival of a young stranger, haunted by a secret from her past, turns the tales of folklore into something more unsettling. One story, however, is more chilling and more real than any of them could have ever imagined. Winner of the 1997 Olivier Award for ‘Best New Play’, The Weir is a shadowy tale delving into the dark corners of human lives, and the national tour marking its 20th anniversary year is a co-production between English Touring Theatre and Mercury Theatre Colchester. The Weir is a scary tale in the tradition of The Woman In Black, the ghost story that has proved to be perennially popular among theatre-goers all over the world. As the enduring West End success of the stage dramatisation of Susan Hill’s The Woman in Black testifies; suspenseful and spine chilling stories prove especially potent in a dark theatre. The ghost story played to packed houses at Cast earlier this year, and like The Weir, the creepiness, eeriness and a tightening of the tension screws proves to be perennially popular among theatre goers around the world. Those who enjoyed The Woman in Black will love being chilled to the bone by the slow-burning atmospherics of The Weir. The production is directed by Adele Thomas whose previous directing credits include working for Shakespeare’s Globe, the Royal Court, National Theatre of Wales and the Welsh National Opera. Adele said: “It’s a privilege to be bringing Conor McPherson’s haunting, extraordinary play to the audiences across the UK that love good storytelling and extraordinary characters.” The Weir will star Louis Dempsey as Finbar, Sean Murray as Jack, John O’Dowd as Jim and Sam O’Mahony as Brendan.

YORKSHIRE DRAMAS TAKE THE STAGE AT CAST The Ruck
THE INSPIRATIONAL STORY OF A GIRLS RUGBY LEAGUE TEAM FROM YORKSHIRE, AND A CULT EIGHTIES WORKING-CLASS COMEDY ARE TWO OF THE LOCAL STORIES COMING TO CAST THIS AUTUMN.
rom Batley’s Golden Mile to Australia’s Gold Coast comes Kevin Fegan’s (Obama: The Mamba, Curve Theatre, Leicester and The Lowry Salford) new play The Ruck comes to Cast in Doncaster on Wednesday 20 and Thursday 21 September. All the way from Yorkshire, the original ‘County of Origin’ of Rugby League, comes a new force to be reckoned with in the sport: the mighty Batley Girls under 16 team. This group of girls from a small Yorkshire town have grown up together and are ready for tough challenges on and off the pitch; but are they prepared for what’s in store on the other side of the world? The Ruck follows the story of these inspirational young women as they overcome boy (and girl) problems, friendship dramas, racial discrimination and deep-hidden family secrets, all set against the backdrop of a changing community in a diverse industrial town. The Ruck came out of a residency at the Batley Bulldogs by playwright Kevin Fegan, who was inspired by watching and spending time with the club’s under 16’s girls team and their families. Since its formation in 2012, the team, which are coached by one of the girl’s fathers, have won the English championship twice. In 2015 the team became the first British girls’ team to tour Australia. The club invited Kevin Fegan to join the team and their families on the trip and their experiences, along with spending time at the club and in Batley, became the inspiration for the new play. Playwright Kevin Fegan, said about the
F
new play: “For me the true inspiration for the play are the girls and their families. Watching the girls line up for training on the beach, they personify girl power: all shapes and sizes, celebrating themselves and their gender.” “The Ruck is a fun, fast-moving, physical play, written in verse and prose with raps and music. It’s a play in two halves which compares and contrasts the lifestyles of the girls from Batley and the Gold Coast.” Director Joyce Branagh said: “For me The Ruck is a really exciting new production to be working on. It’s a beautiful new play that is vibrant, funny and extremely moving about Yorkshire, about the problems of being a teenager (and being a parent of a teenager) and how a brilliant game like rugby league can be a support, a focus, and a metaphor for the ups and downs of everyday life – always remember: try try again!” Later in the year, Out of Joint, Octagon Theatre Bolton and the Royal Court Theatre present Rita, Sue and Bob Too, the seminal 1982 play about two teenage friends in Bradford who embark on an affair with a married man, which tours to Cast from Tuesday 7 to Saturday 11 November. In the play, best friends Rita and Sue get a lift home from married Bob after babysitting his kids. When he takes the scenic route and offers them a bit of fun, the three start a fling they each think they control. Andrea Dunbar wrote this, her second, semi-autobiographical play for the Royal Court Theatre in 1982 when she was just 19 and is a vivid portrait of girls caught between brutal childhood and an unpromising future, hungry for adult adventure. Told with wicked

humour, startling insight and a great ear for dialogue, Rita Sue and Bob Too stars Yorkshire talent including Taj Atwal, who was widely acclaimed for her performance in East is East at Trafalgar Studios in the West End, and who starred as Rita in Educating Rita for Hull Truck. She is also known from Stella on Sky, and Kay Mellors’ In The Club on BBC1. Rita, Sue and Bob Too will be directed by the renowned Max Stafford-Clark, who directed both the play’s premiere and Dunbar’s first play, The Arbor, which she wrote when she was just fifteen. Cast will be screening the award-winning film version of The Arbor on Tuesday 7 November. Commenting, Max Stafford-Clark said: “When Andrea wrote her first two plays, she was a teenager from a rough council estate who’d never been to the theatre. Now, thirty five years after its premiere, Rita Sue and Bob Too takes its place in the Octagon and Royal Court’s seasons in the role of Classic Play. It’s one of the privileges of my career that Andrea’s astute, fresh and funny writing reached my desk, and it is exciting to bring her vivid, albeit alarming world to life again with these fine actors.” Tickets for The Ruck at Cast on Wednesday 20 and Thursday 21 September at 7.30pm are £16.50 (£14.50 concessions). Tickets for Rita, Sue and Bob Too at Cast from Tuesday 7 November to Saturday 11 November at 7.30pm (Wednesday and Saturday matinees at 2.30pm) are £18.50 (£16.50 concessions). There is no equivalent word in English, but lagom roughly translates as ‘not too little, not too much, just right.’ By living lagom, you choose a more responsible and balanced life. So what does this mean for the home? Like the anti-clutter movement of minimalism, it is about having less, but the items you do own are sustainable, ethical and will ultimately bring you more joy. Reducing waste is a huge part of lagom, so reusable tote bags and furniture made from long-lasting materials such as acacia wood

ELEMENTS TREATMENT OF THE MONTH:
REDERM edermalization is an innovative method for efficient ageing prevention and skin restoration which affects the three main skin ageing mechanisms
R
1 Regulates biochemical and physiological processes in cells 2 Efficiently prevents free radical damage 3 Prevents skin dehydration
Redermalization Redermalization is a treatment that works by rejuvenating and improving skin quality, working on fine lines, pigmentation, dehydration and sagging. As we age, collagen and elastin deplete in the skin leading to fine lines, wrinkles and sagging. Rederm made by Hyalual is a natural way to visibly restore radiance, hydration and lift. The areas that can be treated include the face, hands, neck and décolletage. The treatment is delivered by tiny individual injections delivered very superficially to the skin. Xela Rederm is a revolutionary mixture of uncross linked Hyaluronic Acid and Succuinic Acid. Hyaluronic Acid works on the hydration of the skin from within, whilst Succinic Acid increases oxygen and stimulates the production of collagen and elastin at a cellular level. Succinic Acid is also a powerful antioxidant and is clinically proven to reduce pigmentation. The overall effect is improved skin quality, better hydration and a more even, less patchy skin tone with a more youthful look and feel. When treating around the eyes, this treatment

AFTER
What are the benefits of Redermalization? • Young healthy skin • Complexion improvement • Improved skin surface and texture • Lifting effect • Pigmentation removal • Decreases depth and length of wrinkles
helps to address fine lines, thinning skin and dark circles. The process usually requires three to six in-clinic treatments (dependent on skin quality) with two to three weeks in between each session. The treatments are comfortable as we always pretreat with numbing cream. Following the treatment you will be provided with some home use products to maximise the benefits of the in-clinic treatment.

TRIED & TESTED
Sarah just loves her new look OUR LUCKY WINNER TRIES OUT A FIBROBLAST TREATMENT AT ELEMENTS MEDISPA AND IS DELIGHTED WITH THE RESULT. lements Medispa recently launched an exciting competition in association with Eastside to allow one of our lucky readers to try their treatments for themselves. The winner was Sarah Burgon, who was invited to put two to the test. Sarah is getting married later this year and was excited about the prospect of having her treatments in time for the big day. During her first visit in June, Sarah had anti-wrinkle injections and dermal lip fillers and was delighted with the results. This month, she was back to give a new treatment a go. Fibroblast is a non-surgical treatment that tightens skin and targets the first signs of aging. It has already become a very popular alternative for those who do not wish to have surgery. The treatment is most often used to tighten the upper and lower

She has been working at Elements Medispa for two years. As well as performing Fibroblast treatments, she offers her clients skin peels, hair removal, derma roller treatments and much more. “The great thing about Fibroblast is that the results are permanent, although it won’t stop the clock. her upper eyelids. Josie started by administering an anaesthetic cream to numb the area, before using a plasma-flash (a small pen that sparks) to vaporise and remove excess skin, as well as shrinking the remaining skin. Small ‘carbon crusts’ (brown dots) appeared where the skin had been vaporised, which she was told to leave to heal and fall off naturally, which they did between three to seven days after the treatment. Including the consultation, the whole process had taken
between 30 minutes and an hour. Josie also recommended Sarah drink plenty of water and use an extra pillow to prop her up in bed that night. Anti-bacterial cleanser, wound gel moisturiser and factor 50 sun protection were also given to her to take away and use at all times for up to three months post treatment. It is also vital that clients do not expose the affected skin to strong sunlight for up to six weeks. Seven to nine days after the treatment, Sarah was invited back to have a check-up and to make sure she was happy with the results. “It’s not completely painless, but Josie was fantastic,” says Sarah. “She put me at ease and the treatment was done in no time. I’d use her again. I was surprised by how quick the recovery time was. Day two, the swelling had gone down and day four the crusts had cleared up. “The difference it has made is amazing. I would definitely go back for other treatments at Elements.” To book a free, no obligation consultation, contact Elements on 01302 34 34 32.

Q&A: Send your wellbeing questions to Liz @ Elizabethann61@live.co.uk One will be chosen and published monthly. www.elizabethannbawtry.com
O
Am I really hungry or do I just want to change the way I feel?
If the answer is yes, no amount of food will work. So what is the answer? Hypnosis and self-hypnosis using affirmations.
Dear Liz,
I have lost weight and put it back on and more time and time again. I’ve tried diet after diet, I really want to lose weight but can’t seem to motivate myself at all. I lose heart very quickly and am very depressed about it all. I have heard about hypnosis but am not sure how it would work for me. Steve, Rotherham Liz replies:
There are many different reasons for increased weight, Learned behaviour, habit, situation change, emotions, snacking etc. Hypnotherapy can help you change habits and the way you think about food, creating a lasting change. There are many different strategies alongside hypnosis that help create change in weight. One important element in most people’s weight reduction that usually gets overlooked is setting goals. Goals give you long-term vision and short-term motivation, helping you to organise your time and resources so you can achieve your goals.
What is an affirmation?
An affirmation is a statement or desirable intention, repeated in order to embed into your mind much like inputting the right programme into a computer. Positive thoughts bring positive results.
When you visualise, the subconscious is not able to tell whether the image is something that has already happened or is something which is still to happen, so you can create a new image for yourself. Eg, a much more positive, confident, attractive one.
Weight Loss Hypnotherapy packages include a customised gastric band hypnosis programme. Other hypnosis packages also available including goal setting, self hypnosis, visualisation therapy and affirmation therapy, all available @ The Vanilla Rooms, Crown Hotel, Bawtry. CONTRACTORS DIG DEEP TO SOLVE CAR PARK PROBLEM Big-hearted businesses have worked for free to solve a parking problem at Rotherham Hospice. Hospice staff, patients and visitors had long had to struggle for spaces at the Broom Road site, but thanks to Rotherham road surface specialist SteelPhalt and its clients, a new staff car park has been created which almost doubles the amount of places available and reduces stress for all. The Mayor of Rotherham, Councillor Eve Rose Keenan, was invited to cut the ribbon on the new parking area, created from the garden of neighbouring property Fox House, which was donated to the hospice by a supporter many years ago. CS Surveying, Dinnington, assisted with gaining planning permission and Doncaster company, Derek Lewis Ltd, prepared the site and ground work. Specialist Surfacing of Scunthorpe provided the labour and machinery for the laying of asphalt donated by SteelPhalt. Tonnes of stone were donated by Cemex and Matlock based Slinter Mining, soil by AC Aggregates, Maltby, and Hather Plant Hire Rotherham, provided machinery. Other companies who gave generously were Specialist Surfacing of Scunthorpe, Parkway Sheet Metal, Nynas Bitumen, South Yorkshire Tarmacadam, Everitt Haulage, Attercliffe and Right Mix Concrete, Sheffield.

Manufacturer celebrates 40 years in business
A Doncaster based manufacturing company celebrated its 40th year of business with a glittering party for staff, suppliers and colleagues. Boxes and Packaging (Doncaster) Ltd, manufacturer of corrugated packaging solutions, has occupied the same site at Shaw Lane Industrial Estate for all of its 40-year history and with many employees clocking up years of service, it was the ideal opportunity to celebrate these milestones too. “A fantastic evening was had by all the team as we celebrated our history and business success together in the grounds of another successful Doncaster business, Yorkshire Wildlife Park,” said managing director, Stacey Austin.
