A significant milestone
DISCERNING CUSTOMERS APPRECIATE THE FIRST CLASS WORKMANSHIP THAT GOES INTO CREATING A DAVID J MARTIN KITCHEN. THAT THE BUSINESS HAS RECENTLY CELEBRATED 40 YEARS IS TESTAMENT TO ITS SUCCESS. ne of Sheffield’s most successful and long-standing businesses celebrated its 40th anniversary in December. David J. Martin has been creating stunning bespoke furniture, primarily for kitchens but also for bedrooms, studies and lounges, from the same business base on Springvale Road, Walkley since 1980. Forty years is a significant landmark for any business and a steady stream of satisfied customers have been won over by David’s obsession with doing every job to the highest possible standards. “I’m doing what I always wanted to do since I was at school,” says David, a carpenter by trade who studied for many years, starting with a City and Guilds in joinery and finishing up with a degree in his chosen subject. “I loved joinery and technical drawing and still get David in his workshop a lot of satisfaction from seeing a job through from start to finish.” Kitchens account for most of the work being done by David and his eight-strong team who are all highly trained and at the top of their game. Everything – and that does mean every single thing – is made from scratch with kitchens painstakingly designed to the last millimetre to suit the size and style of the home and meet the requirements of the customer. Every piece of wood is sanded in house, every colour is mixed and sprayed by the company’s own full time professional paint sprayer, and every sharp corner is rounded off by hand. “There’s no such thing as a typical David J Martin kitchen,” says David. “The fact that we make everything means the customer can have whatever they want. Everyone has a different view as to how a kitchen works, so a large part of my job is talking it through with them and finding out exactly what they would like. “We often find ourselves working in some very nice houses where the original kitchen was quite small, it was simply a place to prepare food in. So we are not just planning on where to put the new kitchen, we are also knocking down walls.” When this happens David J Martin can provide a one-stop shop for structural, plumbing and electricity work as well as building furniture. It generally takes three to four months from consultation to completion to finish a kitchen including six weeks to make
O

and three to five weeks to fit, depending on the amount of building work involved. David says: “Because we work as a team – plasterers, electricians, plumbers and fitters – everyone is lined up to come in and work as and when we need them. There is no delay and disruption for the customer is always kept to a minimum.” It’s at the design stage that David’s technical drawing skills come into their own as he prefers to show customers his own line drawings rather than using a CAD (computer aided design) machine. “Hand-drawn plans alongside photos of what we are starting from show a much truer depiction of what we are going to do and clients who are ordering a bespoke kitchen like it.” Looking to the future, David’s son Richard has worked for the company for 12 years and is now an integral part of the team, and with grandson Oliver the latest addition to the family, who’s to say this family business won’t still be going strong in another 40 years. How Yorkshire’s coastal treasures are attracting shrewd investors THE RAPID RISE OF UK STAYCATIONS IS PROMPTING INTEREST IN BUY-TO-LET HOLIDAY HOMES AT FILEY’S LUXURIOUS NEW RESORT. Nikki lakeside lodges
Filey’s sandy shoreline recently featured in TripAdvisor’s Traveller’s Choice list
hen it comes to investment, uncertain times call for innovative thinking. Where is cash being spent – and how can we capitalise on it? In 2020, the smart money is on UK holiday homes. Price comparison website Travelsupermarket.com recently reported a 50 per cent increase in enquiries about self-catering holidays in the UK. Figures reflect year-round interest – buying agents County Homesearch saw a 30 per cent increase in holiday cottage rentals last winter, compared with the year before. As a result, hidden gems such as The Bay Filey in North Yorkshire are flourishing, as holidaymakers choose to take shorter breaks throughout the year instead of one or two overseas trips. And people have grown accustomed to the good life – so where once a simple caravan or chalet might have fitted the bill, today’s aspirational tourists expect premium accommodation with luxury
W
facilities on their doorstep. According to Aria Resorts, which owns The Bay Filey, demand for property from investor buyers is rising, as they realise the money to be made from letting high-end holiday accommodation. “In 2019, around £3million was spent on holiday rentals at The Bay Filey, and this is set to grow in 2020,” says Paul Bingham, sales manager at The Bay Filey. “With our rental properties, through our managed lettings service, 70 per cent of the holiday rental revenue is passed back to the owner, which naturally has attracted a lot of investor interest in The Bay Filey’s properties. “People want to invest in something reliable. The fact our properties are fully mortgageable, with an ICW ten-year warranty and 999-year lease, makes them appealing to a wide range of people, from those who are retired, to young professionals looking to purchase a buyto-let to support their regular income.”
To support this interest and the growth in the region, Aria Resorts has invested £20million in a new gated development of state-of-the-art luxury lodges at The Bay Filey, to keep up with demand for buy-to-let holiday homes. The potential rental income from the new properties is estimated to be up to £35,000 per annum. “One of the best areas for buy-to-let holiday home yields is The Bay Filey,” says Paul. “Filey’s sandy shoreline recently featured in TripAdvisor’s Traveller’s Choice list, alongside Bondi Beach in Australia, and Florida’s Siesta Beach, which was a fantastic accolade. “Filey continues to grow in popularity as more people choose to take coastal breaks all year round, at a location that’s not too far from home. That’s why we are encouraging investors considering Filey to make a move now, so they can capitalise on a full year of letting potential.”
The Bay Filey’s luxury lakeside lodges Aria’s new, gated resort at The Bay Filey will feature beautiful lodges in three different styles: the warm and inviting Nikki with natural materials and feature porthole window; the luxury New England-style Tahiti with its vaulted ceilings and sweeping deck; and the bright and spacious Kontiki, designed for families and groups with a love of sea, surf and the great outdoors.

Mr Magenty, Forest School Leader
The Forest School experience
OPEN DAY Saturday 7 March 10am -12pm
WESTBOURNE IS THRIVING AS LESSONS HEAD OUT OF THE CLASSROOM AND INTO THE FOREST SCHOOL. t’s a green oasis in the heart of the city… and a wonderful spot for encouraging and stimulating young minds. Westbourne School is proud of its Forest School status, which takes lessons out of the classroom for a wider educational experience. Sheffield’s non-selective co-educational independent school for children aged three to 16, is delighted to now offer pupils the opportunity to enjoy classes in the Forest School area for outdoor learning and development Forest School is the outdoor education system in which students visit natural spaces to learn personal, social and technical skills, using woodlands and forests as a means to build independence and self-esteem in children and young adults. Outdoor lessons are based in The Dell, a beautiful secret wooded garden that gives children the experience of finding education in this refreshing, calming setting, encouraging the school’s core values of excellence and inclusion, respect and resilience. Another key element in the Westbourne success story has been a commitment to Co-ed learning going back more than 20 years, helping boys and girls from an early age to appreciate diversity and equality, promoting socialisation, improving communication skills and producing fully rounded individuals.
I
Westbourne’s outstanding academic record of achievement stands as a testament to the success of this approach. A marvellous 86 per cent of Year 11 pupils in 2019 gained at least five passes at grades 4 and above (A*-C) – not including Maths & English – and 73 per cent of all grades were at 9-5. One-hundred per cent of the Scholarship Class gained five passes at grades 4 and above (A*-C) The average grade in the school’s Scholarship Class for all subjects at GCSE was 7.7 (nearly an A*). At the same time, though, pupils with special needs and disabilities were among the year’s highest achieving pupils and other pupils with SEND attained grades well beyond their predictions. Westbourne is proud of all its pupils’ achievements, and appreciates they have different learning profiles, as they are supported to reach their potential and be their best selves. Small class sizes (average 13 pupils) are another factor that ensures each individual will receive the attention they need to maximize their potential. No boy or girl will ‘slip through the net’. Westbourne does not have an entrance exam – pupils are accepted on their own merit, with a focus on that individualised learning. Westbourne also offers a range of scholarships that in 2020 have proved more popular than ever before.
Areas for growth Westbourne School is embarking on a major £2million redevelopment project. Work is set to begin on the development of a large two-storey construction of a hall, gymnasium, three classrooms and reflects Westbourne’s successful and sustained growth in recent years. Visit them on Open Day to find out more – Open Day 7 March. Another hugely successful area for growth at Westbourne has been its very popular pre-school for children aged three to four, open 39 weeks every year and offering indoor and outdoor classes with specialist training in French, music, drama and PE. Although it is a school based very much at the heart of Sheffield - just minutes away from the University of Sheffield, the city’s principal hospitals the historic Botanical Gardens and the bustling retail centre of Broomhill Westbourne also proves enormously popular to families living in Derbyshire and the Peak District. Parents are advised to think ahead as places are in such high demand that it is essential to begin the application process as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. HOME & GARDEN
Feng shui your home APPLY THE PRINCIPLES OF HAPPINESS AND HARMONY INTO YOUR DÉCOR. omes should be places we love, where we enjoy waking up and coming back home to and if you want to breathe more life into your living space by creating a happy, healthy and welcoming environment, then there’s no better place to start than with the theory of feng shui. Its principles maintain that we live in harmony with our environment and its main aim is to achieve balance in your living and working space and maximise your potential for success in all areas of your life. So, how can we apply this philosophy to our home for 2020 and beyond? We’ve compiled a few ideas that will kickstart your journey to a happier and healthier home.
H
Invite wealth into your home In feng shui, your front door represents how energy enters your home and your life. So, naturally it is first place to start when you want to create good feng shui. To draw chi energy to your front door place plants and lights either side and use a mirror to visually enlarge the foyer space but position it so that it doesn’t directly face the door. Evergreens are ideal foliage and shrubs which stay green and have a good bulk all year round are key, so try box or yew, hebes or sarcococcas. Pictured: Garden Trading 40cm planter gardentrading.co.uk
Bring harmony to your kitchen The hall represents opportunities, therefore ensure it is kept clutter-free so that the ‘energy’ can circulate. Place coats and shoes inside a closed cupboard so they don’t stagnate and to activate that all important chi energy, position a mirror and fresh flowers to instantly uplift the vitality of the space.
The kitchen is a vital space as its energy represents nourishment and relationship harmony. Ensure that you don’t place the sink and cooker opposite each other, as that can lead to arguments between couples by creating a ‘water and fire crash’. Avoid too much black and red, as that too causes water and fire to collide. Focus on strong Earth element décor such as fresh whites, clean greys and warm nude tones.

HOME & GARDEN
Spruce up your interior decor
Nourish your dining space
In feng shui, plants embody life energy. What does that mean? Well, living green house plants connect us to nature and bring vibrancy into our homes. They’re like fresh pressed organic green juice for our homes. Think freshness, health and vitality. The most important thing to remember is to find plants that you can care for and are appropriate for the space. For example, take your lighting conditions into consideration. If you’re new to plants, try some easy ones like aloe and succulents.
The dining room and table are an important consideration in feng shui as they provide a space where you can concentrate mindfully on what you are eating. In feng shui the dining space is considered to relate with the spleen, that in turn relates to the element Earth, which in traditional Chinese medicine is concerned with digestion. To optimise the energy in this space, place a mirror on the wall to reflect the dining area and fresh flowers on the table.

Encourage a restful sleep
Let chi flow freely
To ensure your bedroom is as balanced as possible, choose a light neutral colour and invest in a king or super-king size bed and mattress. The bed must have a headboard and be positioned centrally against a solid wall and ideally must not be in line with the bedroom door. Place bedside tables either side of the bed to provide support and top with curvy lamps and lightly fragranced candles to introduce some romantic energy.
The front garden represents your future, so ensure it is always kept beautiful with an array of flowers and plants and always keep it tidy so that the chi-energy is able to flow freely. The back garden represents both health and wealth for the occupants, so ensure it is always kept in good condition. The boundaries, fences and walls must always be well maintained to provide support to the occupants and a bird bath or water feature can add both sound and wildlife to your outdoor space.

Forewarned is forearmed
The Stannington property after Martin-Brooks’ re-roof
The property in Stannington before work was carried out
IF YOU NEED A SECOND OPINION BEFORE COMPLETING A HOUSE PURCHASE, YOU NEED A TRUSTED PROFESISIONAL WHO CAN GIVE CLEAR AND INDEPENDENT ADVICE. STEP FORWARD MARTIN-BROOKS (ROOFING SPECIALISTS). t’s every homebuyers’ nightmare. Your survey is back and it details a catalogue of faults with the property upon which you have set your heart. When you’ve found ‘the one’ there’s no stopping most people metaphorically moving in. So, when you’re faced with further investigation into a particular aspect of its construction, what do you do? Pull out of the purchase or press on? Most experts would advise against knee-jerk reactions. You need to find trusted professionals, who can give clear, independent advice about the extent of the problems, particularly if they are not obvious. Sheffield’s seven hills expose our homes to the worst of the British weather and the roof bears the brunt. But, when you’re down on the ground, it’s almost impossible to determine the extent of any damage. Local firm, Martin-Brooks (Roofing Specialists), are experts in providing roof surveys, charging just £150 plus VAT for a comprehensive inspection and report, detailing the condition of the roof and a quote for any necessary repairs. Estimator, Andrew Wheadon, said: “We receive numerous calls from homebuyers wondering if the house they have agreed to purchase has inherent problems that
I
38 www.sheffieldvibe.com
will cost them dearly down the line. “Our aim is to reassure clients by assessing the condition and workmanship of every component of the roof coverings. We provide visual evidence of our findings and distinguish between problems that need immediate attention and minor issues that can be treated as ongoing maintenance.” Because Martin-Brooks understands the costly nature of moving house, it is willing to deduct its survey fee from any work commissioned when your purchase completes. A couple looking to downsize contacted the Darnall-based firm after finding a suitable property in Stannington. The 1930s semi-detached was typical of those built across Sheffield and still sported its original Rosemary tiles that were showing visible signs of age. Estimator Andrew Wheadon
The roof survey undertaken by Martin-Brooks revealed numerous tiles were breaking up due to years of frost damage. Because of the work required, the couple opted for a full re-roof, ensuring they weren’t dogged by recurring issues in later life. Martin-Brooks recovered the whole roof in new tiles, upgraded the insulation and added a maintenance-free dry ridge system. Gutters, facias and soffits were also replaced with new maintenance-free materials, and the external walls painted, to improve its appearance and performance. As a member of the Competent Roofer scheme, the firm is able to sign off projects of this nature for building regulations, saving homeowners the time and expense of calling out a council inspector. Andrew added: “This couple is one of many we have helped move house, safe in the knowledge they won’t be facing any surprise bills next time it rains. Armed with our roof survey, homebuyers can enter into a purchase forewarned about the costs involved.” To find out more about commissioning a roof survey from Martin-Brooks, telephone 0114 244 7720 or visit www.martin-brooks.co.uk and complete the online enquiry form.

"Exquisite designs and transformation; extremely impressed! Our original aim for our new kitchen was to create a family living space, where we could wine, dine and recline; somewhere where we could entertain friends or eat a family meal together and then sit down and have a chat afterwards. Having approached Dave Stone Design, we were soon impressed by Dan's enthusiasm and professionalism. He was full of creative ideas, but also able to adapt those concepts into our desires. We honestly believe that Dave Stone Designs offers outstanding innovative designs that utilises the space and functions for family lifestyles, the quality of the finished product is beautiful. From inception to completion, the service was excellent. There was contact every day; the time frames were adhered to; and Liam, in common with Dan, orchestrated the project seamlessly. We now have a functional yet spacious and airy kitchen and living space. We also have a utility room with matching colours for the washer and dryer. We have internal space tower drawers, full-size dual Samsung ovens, combination microwave and warming drawer, granite composite sink, downdraft extractor hob, under-mounted sink and American fridge freezer... and a truly-beautiful living space. It really is a work of art." Simon and Sarah Jones

Our customers are at the heart of everything we do, and we pride ourselves on offering a first-class service from the very first moment you visit, all the way through to us delivering your goods. Our showroom is the perfect place for customers to see what we have to offer and to meet the team.” It’s that commitment throughout the entire process of design, quoting, fitting and after-care service that Damen believes will keep PDQ ahead of competitors. “Our attention to detail is second to none and we deal with absolutely everything every step of the way ensuring every element is delivered smoothly, whilst always being available to
discuss each aspect of the design and installation process. We listen first, advise where needed and work hard to bring your vision to life. “We take care of everything from pipe work, tiling and silicones, to flooring, wall panels and all fixtures and fittings, varying between vintage and ultra-modern. T
he OEC is the new venue and the main event sponsor for this Westside Restaurant and Bar
Awards. The OEC – Owlerton Events & Conferencing to give its full title – opened late last year on Penistone Road, Sheffield. It’s a new, ultra-modern and exciting venue with a 500-seater capacity, making it the perfect spot for large-scale parties, weddings and celebrations of all kinds. So, of course, it’s ideal for the local restaurant world’s biggest and glitziest celebration night! This year’s event looks like being bigger and better than ever. The Westside Restaurant & Bar Awards has grown in size and stature over the years and the versatile nature of The OEC means The Rivelin Suite on the first floor will cater for up to 500 people. So with an exciting venue settled and a date in the diary, the search for next year’s winners is set to intensify. Who will come out on top in 2020? Last year Brocco on the Park won our Restaurant of the Year award for the second year running. Last year was also particularly strong for newcomers with recently opened establishments such as Omega at Abbeydale (Best Newcomer), Chinatown (Best Oriental) and Bank House Hathersage (Best Contemporary) among our category winners.
In recent years our awards have reflected the rapid improvement in standards in gastro-pubs, the growing influence of street food from around the world and an increasingly vibrant independent pub and bar culture. So will any new trends emerge this time around, and who will be our big winners? All will become clear in the next few months as we search out the venues that have truly excelled in the art of delivering delicious food and beverages in a superlative setting over the last year. All our recent award winners have been superb, so expectations are high. Here’s a reminder to all restaurant, hotel, café and pub owners: to make sure your establishment is under consideration for the 2020 Westside Restaurant & Bar Awards, contact publishing manager Sam Warsop at sam.warsop@rmcmedia.co.uk *** We are also delighted to announce that LWC, the UK’s largest independent drinks wholesaler, will be the drinks sponsor for this year’s Westside Restaurant & Bar Awards. Established in 1979, LWC has grown from a small start-up to the fastest growing privately owned drinks company in the UK. With over 9,000 different product lines and similarly over 9,000 on-trade customers, LWC delivers the broadest range and greatest service available in the UK drinks industry.
Last year Brocco on the Park won our Restaurant of the Year award for the second year running

MEET THE CHEF
Kitchen confidential JOB SATISFACTION IS HIGH ON THE AGENDA FOR THESE LOCAL CHEFS. RACHEL MARTIN FINDS OUT THE SECRETS TO THEIR SUCCESS.
Adrian Gagea The Maynard Adrian Gagea’s love of cooking stemmed from his Romanian grandmother: “My mother and my grandmother are great cooks and I used to be amazed by the smells and the flavours. What really fascinated me back then was the pleasure of my grandmother’s cooking – she made it look so easy and had such a good time doing it. I started to cook at around ten years old. My grandmother would leave a little pan on the stove and one egg on the table and eventually I learnt to cook my own breakfast.” Today, he can be found serving up a smorgasbord of new and classic dishes with a Yorkshire twist from the Maynard kitchen. “We are proud to say we use fresh ingredients from local suppliers. We wholeheartedly believe in our community and neighbours who provide us with the best premium quality ingredients every morning.” Main Road, Grindleford, Hope Valley, S32 2HE Tel: 01433 424110 / the-maynard.com 62 www.sheffieldvibe.com
Andrew Wornes Bank House Andrew Wornes has “always had a passion for food”, whether it’s eating it or cooking for friends and family. He prides himself on knowing the source of each and every ingredient in the Bank House kitchen and has recently launched a new menu in time for the arrival of spring. “It’s a good balance of sharing tapas style plates perfect for social dining combined with a more traditional a la carte menu, to ensure with offer something for everyone.” Look out for dishes such as succulent ribs in a Pedro Ximénez sherry and sweet miso sauce topped with sesame, combined with a stunning Peak District setting and with “so much space to grow and keep improving” - who knows what the future has in store? Ben Slater Inox Dine Ben Slater has trained alongside industry experts from Raymond Blanc and Colin McGurren to Franck Pontais and Rupert Rowley and spent a summer in Barcelona perfecting the art of Spanish cuisine, before going on to master Parsi cuisine at Cyrus Todiwala’s London-based Café Spice and a course in gastro physics with Jozef Youssef. Today, he has climbed the ranks to head up the Inox kitchen, where he serves up a contemporary British menu packed full of locally sourced ingredients: “I’m always trying to make the next experience more enjoyable with the ‘ooo’ and ‘wow’ factor. I particularly love molecular gastronomy side, the more Heston Blumenthal side of cooking.” Be sure to try Ben’s famed pork fillet: brined in pineapple, chilli and soy, with brown butter mash and Juniper berry roasted apples, served with tender stem broccoli and a cider reduction. “I always pull that recipe out if I’m having friends and family over for dinner – it’s a firm Slater favourite.” Level 5 Students Union Building, Durham Road, Sheffield, S10 2TG Tel: 0114 222 6043 / inoxdine.co.uk
Chris Parker West 10 At just 22, Westside’s current Young Chef of the Year and West 10 chef Chris Parker already has a wealth of experience behind him. Chris always knew that he wanted a career in the food industry, so he started working as a pot washer in a restaurant while still at school studying for his BTEC in food. Chris went on to study for his City and Guilds qualification in college, and before moving to West 10 he worked as a junior sous chef at Kenwood Hall Hotel. Having always enjoyed the more creative subjects throughout his education, having a hands-on career is the perfect fit for Chris, as he loves the freedom of being able to create new dishes and menus. 376 Fulwood Road, Sheffield, S10 3GD Tel: 0114 230 9190 / www.west10winebar.com
Craig Simpson Best Western Plus Aston Hall Hotel Chris and Rose Taylor Hudson’s Kitchen Chris and Rose Taylor started Hudson’s Kitchen a little two years ago after both working in the catering industry for a number of years. “We both possess a love for cooking and enjoy experimenting with different recipes and tastes,” said Chris. “We are a husband and wife team and believe that those family values are at the core of our business. We aim to provide a warm atmosphere where people feel relaxed and can enjoy our home-cooked food.” Hudson’s serve a mixture of homemade breakfasts, brunches, lunches and cakes, from eggs Benedict (their signature dish) to American pancakes with bacon, eggs and maple syrup. 54a Sandygate Road, Crosspool, Sheffield, S10 5RY. Craig Simpson has headed up the Aston Hall kitchen for over a decade serving up a tantalising menu of classic British cuisine, having honed his craft at Sheffield College where he trained for three years. Craig fell in love with food from a young age and his advice to other aspiring chefs: “If you have a passion for food – don’t give up! Work hard and you will reap the rewards. Listen to your superiors and absorb all the techniques they give you. Try to eat out as much as possible, too and experience as many cuisines as you can.” Worksop Road, Aston, Sheffield, S26 2EE Tel: 0114 287 2309 www.astonhallhotel.co.uk Continued on page 66

EATING OUT
Plenty to please
AN INDIAN RESTAURANT THAT DARES TO BE DIFFERENT; RACHEL MARTIN VISITS AN ECCLESALL ROAD FAVOURITE. he intimate Prithi Raj is well patronised by locals, as well as others from further afield [perched at the heart of bustling Ecclesall Road] and has swiftly become a destination restaurant for lovers of Indian cuisine, featuring the freshest seafood, chicken and lamb, plus plenty to please vegetarian palates. Head chef Sobuj uses only the freshest ingredients in his dishes, grinding all his own spices and lightly toasting them to obtain maximum flavour and the menu features a wide variety of cooking techniques, from slow-cooked curries to grills and kebabs along with tandoori from the clay oven, delectable comfort food and contemporary creations – swinging between dishes that have been traditionally prepared and an assortment of street food favourites. The wine list at Prithi Raj reflects a carefully considered selection, specially chosen to complement the cuisine. But if wine is not your thing, they have a wide range of Indian and artisan beers, whiskies and other spirits, ensuring a perfect partnership for every guest’s palate. We start with a glass of Babich Sauvignon Blanc (£7.50) a ripe, full bodied Sauvignon from the Rapaura and

Awatere districts of New Zealand and the obligatory poppadums (£0.80) and pickles (£2.90), showcasing a chunky amber-coloured mango chutney, ruby-red tomato and chilli and, best of all, a minty raita yoghurt with added zing. What is it about delightfully crispy poppadums that make you want to eat a bucketful? We both chose from the chef ’s specials (and shared everything) and we were not disappointed. Peshwari naan (£3.20) stuffed with coconut and almond sounds simple but was wonderfully moreish and even more magnificent when dipped in a thick and fragrant lamb chatt (£5.50); a dark, spicy curry which has a depth and mustiness about it without being overhot and arrives encased in a delicate pastry shell casing. This was accompanied by a rich and fragrant chicken podina sizzler (£5.50); a melody of russet-red chicken tikka marinated and cooked until mouthmeltingly tender, with delicious burnt edges, roast onions and bullet chillies, leaving a lingering afterglow of heat and spice. Next was a creamy Lamb Anarkoli (£12.50), a taste explosion on the tongue, spiked with velvety saag and okra and packed full of flavour and heat from Sobuj’s freshly ground spices. His
classic chicken shashlick bhuna (£13.50) was an intensely aromatic concoction made with marinated chicken and dried bhuna spices and prepared in the clay oven with caramel-brown onions, peppers and tomatoes. It was a firm favourite and certainly something to shout about. A side of coconut rice (£3.50) was necessary to mop up all those tasty sauces. Sheffield is not short of excellent Indian restaurants, but Prithi Raj is quite different to the others. The cooking is highly original and the expertise behind the menu is apparent from beginning to end and will appeal to both pundits and diners who are less familiar with Indian food. It’s little wonder it’s caused a stir. You’d best book now, while you can still get in. Prithi Raj 407 Ecclesall Road, Sharrow Sheffield, S11 8PG Tel: 0114 266 6002

It’s pure magic to someone leave will a smile on their face after thoroughly enjoying a dish. “It’s a true blessing to be able to turn your hobby into your everyday.”
Inspired by her grandparents, Emily Rae Aizlewood fell in love with cooking at an early age. So much so that she studied Level 3 Professional Cookery and Level 3 Patisserie and Confection at Sheffield City College and today, she can be found cooking up a storm in the Nonnas kitchen and creating Italian classics with a Nonnas twist. Her advice to other aspiring chefs: “Don’t set your heart on this industry because you have seen the many famous (and wealthy) TV chefs and think that you will have that same experience from the offset. “It takes a whole lot of work, sweat and, at times tears, to make a name for yourself. Then you can see where it takes you.”

James Poon Chinatown James Poon has found himself at the helm of an array of five-star restaurants and hotels throughout China, Hong Kong and London’s bustling China Town, having worked in a kitchen from the age of nine. “I grew up in a poor part of China and so my mother encouraged me to train as a chef so that I could guarantee I was able to eat that day. From there, I developed a deep appreciation and understanding for food and creating new and exciting dishes.” James’ day to day consists of preparing fresh and where possible, locally sourced ingredients ensuring each plate is finished to perfection, with favourites including dim sum, har gow and char sui buns. 27 London Road, Sheffield, S2 4LA Tel: 0114 272 5311 / www.chinatownrestaurant.co.uk 68 www.sheffieldvibe.com

Young chef, Chris Parker
Natural progression
CHRIS WILSON CHECKED UP ON WESTSIDE’S CURRENT YOUNG CHEF OF THE YEAR – AND IT SEEMS HE’S DOING RATHER WELL. eeing as we’re launching our search for the 2020 Westside Young Chef of the Year in this month’s edition (see page 60) this seemed like a good time to see how last year’s winner, Chris Parker from West 10, was getting along, and to make sure he wasn’t resting on his laurels. We had a very strong shortlist of bright young things in 2019, and I was fortunate to be there for the final as they were set the nerve-wracking task of cooking a main course from scratch under the close scrutiny of a panel of industry experts (and me). And while the standard was uniformly high, one youngster stood out from the crowd, delivering fabulous food, bang on time with a calm, collected manner that made it clear he was a real ‘natural’ in the kitchen. So there were solid, professional reasons for my appearance the other Friday night in a venue that has become a watchword for relaxed, good times under the loving stewardship of owner Jonnie Higginbottom. There’s always a warm welcome at West 10 and the bar is the perfect place to relax with a glass of something and run an eye over a short but very well thought-out menu of pub and bistro classics and daily specials. The wine list takes some examining too. There’s always something new to sample and with two thirsty friends in

tow we put our faith in Jonnie’s Wines of the Month. This proved to be a smart move as the Baron de Luze Bordeaux Sauvignon (£18) had a fresh, flinty taste that saw us perfectly through our seafood choices. For the red, a Cotes du Roussillon Les Palomettes (£20) was a real star find, an ideal accompaniment for dark meat and cheese. We headed upstairs to the cosy, low-lit restaurant and began on a high note with three first rate starters. My smoked mackerel fishcakes with dill crème fraiche (£7) packed a proper smoky punch, Phil’s spiced butternut squash soup (6.50) was thick and comforting and Martin’s chestnut mushrooms and toasted pine nuts on toast (£7) were beautifully cooked in a moreish savoury cream sauce. On to the mains and for me one of the best plates of food I’ve eaten in a long time. Three Little Pigs (£17) was, surprise surprise, pork cooked three ways. The centrepiece was a slab of pork belly that was a triumph of tender meat, unctuous fat and the crispiest, crunchiest crackling. I’ve been disappointed a few times in recent years by crackling that’s either too soft or absent altogether. Don’t they realise that crackling is the main point of eating belly pork? Perhaps they do, and just can’t resist snaffling it before it leaves the kitchen. Thankfully young Mr Parker, having delivered the perfect crunchy topping, managed to restrain himself. With accompaniments of
braised pig cheek and tenderloin, and creamed potatoes and baby vegetables, I relished every mouthful. There were similar sounds of contentment from across the table as Phil’s beef goulash (£14.50); brick-red and pungent with paprika and spices, and Martin’s fish and chunky chips with peas and tartar sauce (£12.50) both hit the spot. We rounded a cracking night out with a sweet and soft warm chocolate brownie with vanilla ice cream (£6.50) and a generous sharing plate of cheese and biscuits with celery, grapes and chutney (£10). Then it was back down the stairs into the convivial warmth of the wine bar where Jonnie held court and a jolly time was had by all. It’s always a fun night out at West 10, but make no mistake there’s some seriously good cooking going on behind the scenes. Note to this year’s would-be Young Chefs… you have a tough act to follow. MEET THE CHEF
Leslie Buddington Brocco
Maria Nikolopoulou Meraki
Before heading up the Brocco kitchen, Leslie Buddington perfected the art of preparing fresh seafood in New Zealand and later moved on to the exclusive Soho House in London. “I am a great believer in cooking light and healthy food that does not make you feel uncomfortably full, so I restrict the use of cream and butter and I only use minimal quantities of sugar. I always try to source the best possible ingredients and use the finest local produce such as Yorkshire forced rhubarb and Derbyshire home grown meat.” The arrival of spring brings with it a new concept at Brocco: Chefs Table, where Leslie will get the chance to showcase his creativity and serve up Scandi-inspired dishes for 14 lucky guests, explaining how he has created each plate. “The menu will be a little off piste and I will give diners an experience of seasonal dishes with produce available to me that day. Expect exciting things.”
Maria Nikolopoulou arrived in the UK from Greece with a dream to share her passion and knowledge for cooking and traditional Greek recipes passed down by her grandmother. Meraki (meaning to leave a piece of your soul, creativity and love in your work) is a reflection of Maria’s adoration for convivial Greek hospitality, where she can take care of her customers as if they are her closest friends. On her journey to replicate her grandmother’s cooking, Maria sources virgin Mediterranean ingredients to offer an authentic Greek experience and she creates every dish from scratch each day. Her signature dish is Kleftiko: slow cooked lamb cooked in three different wines, one of which is produced in Peloponissos, a rural area of Greece Maria once called home.

EATING OUT
Food for thought
A GREAT MENU AND GREAT VALUE; CHRIS WILSON IS ALL SMILES AFTER A VISIT TO THIS UNDISCOVERED GEM. colleague recently went to a sixcourse feast to mark the start of the Six Nations tournament at Inox, the Scandi café-style venue on the fifth floor of Sheffield University’s Students’ Union Building, and was wowed by the quality and consistency of the food delivered to a room packed to the rafters with hungry (and thirsty) rugby fans. I’ve heard similarly enthusiastic reports from people who have attended weddings and business functions there. But you don’t have to wait for an invitation to a big ‘do’ to discover the joys of eating at Inox. When not hosting functions it’s open for lunch and early dinner and food of this quality and value must make it one of the undiscovered gems of the Sheffield dining scene. First impressions are of a modern, airy, high-ceilinged and unfussy streamlined room. It’s a relaxed space and if you bag a window seat there are striking views to be had across Western Bank to the university’s gothic-style Firth Court building. At first glance the menu is pretty modest with five choices for starters and mains, three desserts and a cheese course. But close inspection reveals a cleverly constructed selection of dishes making the most of British ingredients with an international twist, with plenty of vegetarian and vegan alternatives. The drinks menu is similarly compact but beautifully balanced too, although when we visited that aforementioned

sporting dinner from two days earlier had knocked a few temporary holes in the wine list. The house white was still holding up nicely though and a large glass of Grenache (£6.50) was most welcome. My teetotal companion meanwhile loved the sharpness of the Virgin Passionfruit Martini (£4), a winning blend of passionfruit, mango and lime, with a shot glass of sparkling elderflower on the side. We began with warm bread from a local bakery served with savoury ‘Hendo’s’ butter and crispy onions, very moreish, and then starters of a deliciously moist and herby roast chicken and mushroom terrine and a caramelised Jerusalem artichoke soup with burnt pear and walnut which was full of sweetsalty contrasts. For mains pan-roasted Moss Valley pork fillet was cooked to perfection, succulent and full of flavour. All the accompaniments, from the smooth mash to the caramelised baby leeks and the sharp cider sauce, came together perfectly. Equally special was our other main course dish, a generous portion of crispy crumb-coated Katsu chicken curry served with sticky rice, spring onion, mouli and carrot salad dressed with soy and wasabi. Presentation was smart throughout with beautiful plates and bowls and signature dagger-style knives made, of course, from the stainless Sheffield steel that gives Inox its name. We chose well but there were plenty
of alternative savoury dishes to demand a return visit, such as a starter of salt cod croquette with celeriac remoulade and burnt lemon dressing or a main dish of pumpkin and lemon thyme gnocchi with old Winchester cheese, chargrilled broccoli, pumpkin purée and toasted pumpkin seeds. For dessert my weakness for something sweet was well and truly sated by a caramelised white chocolate mousse. Morsels of sharp Yorkshire forced rhubarb and ginger provided a welcome contrast and prevented my sugar rush from becoming a full-flung coma. With a chunk of rich, runny Brie-style Yorkshire cheese with chutney and biscuits for my sweet-enough dining companion, a Friday lunch at Inox proved to be the perfect way to ease into the weekend. This really was one of the best looking menus I’d read for a long while and at two courses for £15, three for £18, also tremendous value. BANK HOUSE HAS BROUGHT THE TASTE OF THE MED TO DEEPEST DERBYSHIRE – AND DOING IT EVER-SO-ELEGANTLY, WRITES RICHARD ABBEY. ank House was one of our star contenders at last year’s Westside Restaurant and Bar Awards, walking away with ‘Best Contemporary’ and overall making a very favourable impression with our judges and writers. That it’s taken me this long to pop by is my own fault – I’ve clearly been missing out. If you live in the south-west of Sheffield, as I do, Hathersage is just a 15minute drive – closer than a lot of spots within the city limits (it takes me longer than that to get to Meadowhall). The building itself creates quite a first impression. Built in 1910, the former bank is split over three levels, with the cocktail bar and social dining on the ground floor and the restaurant and private dining on the second floor. Inside it’s a contemporary space with gorgeous high ceilings. The bar sits front and centre with tall tables in the area to the left and a small dining area to the right, which is light, bright and finished tastefully. The menu is inspired by the Mediterranean but features plenty of local ingredients. You can choose between tapas-style small plates, grills including steaks and burgers, pizza as

well as a full a la carte menu with a choice of four starters, five mains and six desserts. As you’d expect from a bar-cumrestaurant, the drinks list is pretty extensive too with plenty of cocktails, wines and beers, including Moritz (a Spanish beer from Barcelona), the house ale. I sampled the Moritz (£3.50, half), my wife a Parles-Vous? Malbec (£7.50, large glass) whilst we deliberated what to have. We settled on the tapas and took on board our waiter’s advice of having four to six dishes between us. A veggie board to share (£12) had a selection of breads, mixed olives, onion jam, olive tapenade, lemon and chilli hummus and spiced chickpea spinach and was a good introduction. We supplemented this with padron peppers (£5), which had been scorched beautifully and given extra zing with a squeeze of lemon, and El Calamar (£7), deep fried squid rings with smoked aioli. The squid was deliciously tender and the coating just divine. We were told that the Pedro Ximenez ribs (£8.50) were one of the chef ’s specialities – they didn’t disappoint. Sweet and sticky, the Asian flavours of hoisin, sweet sherry and sesame were the
perfect accompaniment to the tender pork which just fell away from the bone. A generous portion of Gambas (£8.50) – pan fried tiger prawns in chilli lemon and garlic butter – completed the picture. Four to six dishes for two people might not sound like much, or look like it for that matter, but trust me, the proof was in the eating. We’d left just enough room for dessert and the vanilla cheesecake (£7) and cookie dough (£8), accompanied by an Americano (£2.50) and latte (£3), brought a very satisfying meal to a conclusion. Now that we’ve discovered this slice of Hathersage heaven, will we back? You can bank on it. Bank House Main Road, Hathersage Hope Valley, S32 1BB Tel: 01443 449060 www.bankhouseathathersage.co.uk

THE DIARY
Rome, bloody Rome SHAKESPEARE RETURNS TO THE CRUCIBLE THIS MONTH. WE SPEAK TO STELLA GONET, WHO WILL BE CHANNELLING HER INNER JUDY MURRAY AS CORIOLANUS’ MOTHER, VOLUMNIA. he Crucible’s Robert Hastie started his tenure as artistic director with a thrilling production of Julius Caesar in May 2017. It set an extremely high bar of which he has equalled and often surpassed with successive productions – last year’s Life of Pi and Guys and Dolls are perfect examples. Following recent awards for Best Regional Theatre and Achievement in Technical Theatre, this month he returns to Shakespeare’s tragedies with a modern take on Coriolanus, which runs at the Crucible from 6-21 March. Coriolanus, played on this occasion by Da Vinci’s Demons’ Tom Bateman, is the name given to a Roman general after his military success against various uprisings challenging the government of Rome. Propelled to power, he quickly loses the trust of the people and is torn down from his pedestal. Banished at the height of his fury, he unites with an old enemy to bring down the city he once fought for. If you’re put off by Shakespeare, don’t be. This is a story of power, purpose and greed that is all too familiar today. No doubt it will be engaging to the last. Joining Tom on stage will be Stella Gonet, who plays his mother, Volumnia. The Scottish actress is perhaps best known for her roles in House of Eliot and Holby City as well as Casualty, Dalziel and Pascoe and The Inspector Lynley Mysteries. Her stage credits, of which there are many, has seen her play Ophelia in the 1989 theatre revival of Hamlet, opposite both Daniel Day-Lewis and Ian Charleston, and playing Margaret Thatcher in the original West End production of Handbagged in 2014. “It’s quite a big play to get your head into,” Stella told us as of Coriolanus as she took a break from rehearsals. “It’s kind of military, ambitious, political play – not a lot of nice people in it – but it’s got incredible energy. It’s very cynical as
T
80 www.sheffieldvibe.com
well and I think that is very much of our time.” And being the matriarch of the production is something she’s very keen to get her teeth into. “Volumnia is one of Shakespeare’s more interesting older women,” she adds. “I asked Rob [Hastie] about this at the beginning when we first talked about this, ‘should I be reading the Trojan women or should I be reading Judy Murray’s biography?’ He said ‘definitely Judy Murray!’ “She’s very much an ambitious mother who wants the best for her son and almost doesn’t care what people think of her.” Stella has spent much of her career living and working in London but it’s only in recent years she’s made the conscious decision to spread her wings a little further. “My daughter said to me ‘my God mum, why don’t you go and do stuff out of London?’ and I said ‘because I was bringing up you darling!” Stella laughs. The impression I get, although she was very early into rehearsals, is that she’s
Stella Gonet
delighted to be here. “It’s a treat [working with Rob Hastie]. What I love was that he was an actor himself so he understands the whole process. He’s also brilliant visually, I can tell that. He’s just very bright, he really understands and he communicates well. I think the people, everyone here that I’ve come across at the Crucible, there’s just such a lovely atmosphere, I think that comes from a good leader. “What’s also wonderful is we have the SPT [Sheffield People’s Theatre] who are involved in the production. So when we have big crowd scenes, we actually have big crowds. That’ll make it very exciting. It’s a property community theatre.” And it’s not just the theatre that has made a big impression on Stella. “I can’t believe how lovely [Sheffield] is. My husband drove me with my bike and dog and we had a few days before he went – there are lovely cafes and food, it’s just really nice.” After the run at the Crucible, Stella will be returning home before expanding her television career further. “I did a series last year where I played Martin Freeman’s mother-in-law in a comedy called Breeders, it’s about to come out on Sky I think, and they’re going ahead with the second series and I start literally, straight after. It’s worked out perfectly. “I’m going from Rome, bloody Rome and all that, straight into comedyland. It’s nice, a great contrast. I’m lucky.” Stella’s not the only lucky one. To have such a highly-reputable and awardwinning theatre on your doorstep that continually showcases top-class productions is not just a credit to the people who work at the Crucible but the city itself. No doubt Coriolanus will continue this outstanding legacy. Coriolanus is at the Crucbile from 6-21 March. For ticket details call 0114 249 6000 or visit www.sheffieldtheatres.co.uk

EATING OUT
A winter warmer CHARLES BRADSHAW FINDS HOMEMADE DELIGHTS APLENTY AT THIS OLD FAVOURITE. ocated on the outskirts of Barlow, Derbyshire, Hackney House Gifts and Café was a welcome respite on a bitterly cold winter’s day. Reputed to be one of the oldest tea rooms in the county, the extended building sits next to a tree commemorating the coronation of King George V. The gift shop and café has been enthusiastically operated by Kathryn Turner for the past 12 years. All food is cooked on-site and prepared and served with a roster of a 20-strong team. Arriving at lunch time, the venue was a bustling hive of activity with many diners already sampling the expansive menu. We were promptly escorted to our table in the rear room; a spacious area with plenty of natural light. The food options include sandwiches, salads, homemade pies, puddings, cakes, scones and cream tea. A daily specials board displays additional tempting choices alongside a wide choice of vegetarian and gluten-free options. As we perused the menu, I drank a glass of lemonade (£1.50).
L

I chose homemade lasagne (£11.95), which was accompanied by a generous side salad, coleslaw and garlic bread. The layers of pasta, beef mince and cheese were delightful and I savoured every mouthful. The crisp, crunchy salad was an excellent pairing which included peppers, salad leaves, carrot strips and drizzled with a light vinaigrette. My companion selected a ‘small’ portion of homemade chicken and mushroom pie (£8.50) – a plate full with cabbage, carrots, creamy mashed potato and rich gravy. The homemade pie was crowned with a delightful thick pastry with plenty of chunky chicken pieces and sliced mushrooms hidden beneath. Many dessert options are on offer including cakes and freshly prepared puddings. I opted for the intriguing Mars Bar slice (£3.50) comprised of puffed rice, chocolate and topped with a piece of Mars Bar. The small slice was deceptively rich and filling but equally delicious and satisfying. My companion chose summer fruit and apple crumble, complete with lashings of custard (ice cream or cream can also be requested); a
hearty, generous portion of rich fruit topped with sweet, browned crumble. Our pit-stop was concluded with English Breakfast tea (£1.95) and an Americano (£2.75) – both piping hot and freshly brewed. With many walking routes and the Peak District National Park only a stone’s throw away, Hackney House Gifts and Café is an ideal starting or finishing point to a day out in the countryside. Kathryn also rents out the upper floor of the venue via Airbnb; a tastefully decorated, selfcontained apartment with the convenience of home cooked food available downstairs! EATING OUT
Mixing with the best A COCKTAIL MASTERCLASS AT KETTLE BLACK WAS JUST THE TONIC FOR OLIVIA WARSOP. e may be reaching the tail end of winter but, if you’re like me, you’re probably finding the cold, wet and often dark days too demotivating when it comes to swapping Netflix for a night out. The easy option can be just that. It’s at times like this, only the promise of a truly amazing night out that’s enough to get you out of your pajamas and into a bar. A cocktail masterclass with the head mixologist at Kettle Black definitely qualifies. Whether it’s a night out with a difference you’re after or celebrating something special, this is the perfect way to make a night out memorable. They offer two packages and require a minimum of five guests per booking, ideal for a girls’ night out. For £25 per person guests receive a prosecco welcome drink, two cocktails and a signature shot to end the night. Their second package is £30 per person and includes the same plus an extra cocktail. After arriving, we were shown to a private area of the bar where we received our prosecco and met our mixologist Danny. He explained how the masterclass works – guests choose their cocktails and take turns to go behind the
W

bar where they’re taught how to make them. After a lengthy deliberation I selected a cocktail unique to Kettle Black, Queen B – a sweet honey gin mixed with lemon juice and elderflower cordial topped with lemonade built over ice. This was followed by a classic, a zesty Caipirinha flavoured with lime and sugar. And finally an old favourite – a strawberry daiquiri with Pampero rum, syrup and fresh strawberries neatly mashed by yours truly. Undoubtedly one of the stand-out features of Kettle Black’s masterclass is the broad range of cocktails available. A colourful assortment of cocktails were flowing across the bar from tried and true classics like the martini to eclectic creations such as the@Valleytown made with rhubarb gin and raspberries. Rather than being restricted to a set menu, here guests are encouraged to go wild and select anything from their menus, including any seasonal specials they have on. As they have upwards of 60 cocktails on just their main menu alone the phrase ‘spoilt for choice’ has never rung truer for me than it did sitting on that bar stool. However don’t be afraid if, like me, you find yourself unsure where to start or if you aren’t particularly familiar with
cocktails in general. Danny was ready equipped with inspired recommendations and a seemingly limitless knowledge of his craft. And don’t worry, if you dislike your drink they’ll kindly make you a new one. Having the class taught at the bar means that guests can enjoy a one-onone service while not having to compromise on atmosphere and music; when it’s not your turn behind the bar you can sit back with your drink and soak up the ambience and classy interiors. Cocktail shots are served to close the night so you can toast your new cocktails skills and look out over Kettle Black’s outdoor terrace and remember that beer garden season is just around the corner. A special place A TRIP TO EAST LODGE IS A TREAT, WHATEVER THE WEATHER, WRITES CHRIS WILSON. hatever the occasion a visit to East Lodge is always a pleasure. The drive from Sheffield is one of the prettiest, winding through the Chatsworth estate, slowing to admire the views of the ‘big house’ and to check out the grazing deer. Then there’s the curving drive up to this picture-perfect country house hotel set amidst ten acres of beautiful landscaped water gardens. It’s relaxation all the way, unless you happen to book in for Sunday lunch just as Storm Ciara is doing her worst, in which case it’s eyes on the road right up to the front door, as flooded roads and fallen tree branches do their best to introduce a note of jeopardy. Well, we made it, and I could think of no better way of calming the nerves than sitting in the relaxed atmosphere of the high-ceilinged dining room with its floral prints and picture windows, even if the most striking thing about the view on this occasion was of a giant willow tree’s branches bending in the gale force winds. Sunday lunch is not a meal to be messed around with, regardless of the setting, and thankfully the philosophy at this charming family-run venue is to make is as relaxing and special as the finest home-cooked meal. There’s plenty of choice but for me the centrepiece just had to be the roast sirloin of prime aged Derbyshire beef
W
92 www.sheffieldvibe.com
with duck fat roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding and red wine gravy. The beef, served in thick slices and as rare as you could dare, was tender and delicious. The potatoes, crunchy on the outside and fluffy within, were as near to perfect as made no difference. Add a billowing puffball of Yorkshire pudding, lashings of tasty gravy, eye-watering horseradish and a side dish of assorted vegetables and you have a comforting feast the staunchest traditionalist would love. For those peculiar folk who can resist the Sunday roast and want something a little different, the lunch menu contains plenty of alternatives and, having taken a lifestyle choice to swerve red meat, my companion was seriously impressed with her choice of stone bass on a bed of creamed mash, spinach and white wine sauce. The generous fillet of fish was cooked perfectly with a deep colour on the crispy skin making for a very attractive plate of food. Sunday lunch is £32 for three courses, great value for food, service and settings of this quality, and we began with freshly baked warm rolls and butter. For starters a rich and creamy mushroom soup brought instant comfort, while a ham hock terrine was tender and packed with flavour, with a punchy homemade piccalilli and sourdough croutons providing glorious contrasts in taste and texture.
There’s a nicely balanced wine list, and while my status as designated driver meant it was more about reading than sampling, a large glass of Argentinian Malbec (£8.95) was the perfect companion for my starter and main course. Desserts continued the sky-high standards; a passionfruit posset with tropical fruit and passionfruit sorbet, was a glorious combination of sweet and sharp, and an exemplary slice of Bakewell tart with superb buttery pastry was ideally accompanied by fresh raspberries and raspberry sorbet. We rounded the meal off in relaxed style with coffee and mints (£2.25) in the conservatory and, miracle of miracles, sunshine flooded the room and allowed us to have a quick stroll in the lovely grounds before heading for home. Every Sunday should be this special. East Lodge Country House Hotel Matlock Road, Rowsley Matlock, DE4 2EF Tel: 01629 734734 www.eastlodge.com

Hooked by Crookes JAFLONG STANDS OUT FROM THE CROWD FOR GOOD REASON, WRITES RICHARD ABBEY. he pink neon of Crookes’ Jalfong Indian restaurant is hard to miss as you’re driving through the smart Sheffield suburb. But if you’ve not yet been tempted in by the enticing glow, it’s time you did. Inside you’ll find a traditional-looking restaurant; there’s a bar and waiting area on your right as you walk in then a long dining room to your left filled with white tableclothed tables, dark brown leather chairs, and classical Indian paintings and wallpaper. There’s a window into the kitchen at the far end of the space and a number of chefs were busying themselves with pots of spices, hot pans and sizzling platters. Smart-looking staff are warm and welcoming and, with the addition of a large 18th birthday party, there was a real buzz about the place. The Crookes restaurant has been a mainstay for 22 years and it’s easy to see why. Popadoms (is there a better way to start a meal?) as big as a dinner plate should have given us an indication about portion sizes at Jaflong – just a word of warning, they’re not for the fainthearted.
T
94 www.sheffieldvibe.com
The crispy appetisers (50p) and accompanying chutney tray (£3) were welcomed and quickly devoured, along with cool draught Cobra beers (£4.50 pint/£2.95 half), as we looked over the extensive menu, which has been expertly put together by owner Shahab Uddin. With chef ’s specials, Jaflong specials, curries, tandoori dishes, vegetable dishes and more, it’s easy to be overwhelmed. I started with what I thought would be a light introduction to the evening but my creamy and coconutty prawn puree (£3.50) could have probably fed both of us, although my wife was too distracted by her delicious Tandoori King Prawns, which had been marinated in yoghurt and cooked over charcoal (£4.90). The blackened prawns, with the distinctive red tikka colouring, were a real highlight. I got my own taste of the tandoori prawns in my mixed grill (£19.95), which arrived on a sizzling platter along with chunks of lamb and chicken tikka, tandoori chicken and a sheek kebab. It was served with boiled rice (or nan bread, if you prefer) and a very good bhuna sauce. It was hard to know where
to start but every element was cooked well, tender where it should be, and had real zing from the seasoning. Lamb karai (£9.95) is my wife’s go-to curry, if you will, and this Jaflong version was particularly good. The lamb was fallapart-tender and the sauce, made with a combination of fresh herbs, spices, onion, capsicums, garlic and fresh coriander, was lovingly moreish and eagerly mopped up with the accompanying nan bread (£2.95). A portion of pilau rice (£3.25) completed proceedings. This was our first visit to the restaurant and won’t be our last. It’s not just the pink neon that makes it stand out from the crowd. Auxerre leads the way in the 2019 Lincoln Handicap at Doncaster Pictures by Andrew Kelly Photography
The flat is back!
OFFICIALLY OPENING THE UK FLAT TURF SEASON, THE UNIBET LINCOLN RACEDAY SHOWCASES WORLD-CLASS RACING AT THE HEART OF DONCASTER ON TOWN MOOR. THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE RACE CARD IS THE UNIBET LINCOLN, A HERITAGE HANDICAP WORTH £100,000 IN PRIZE MONEY.
Why is the Raceday called the Lincoln? The UNIBET Lincoln has run at Doncaster since 1965 when it was transferred from the former Lincoln Racecourse. The race itself has run since 1849 and is a race rich in history. The Lincoln Handicap is in fact one half of the Spring Double with The Grand National held two weeks later. However, winning the double is no easy feat. In fact the only jockey to have ever won both legs was Dave Dick way back in 1956! 98 www.sheffieldvibe.com
Back to 2020, and will jockey James Doyle score a hat-trick, having won the race on the last two outings, first in 2018 on Adeybb and again in 2019 on Auxerre – he’s surely one to watch. And after a cold bleak winter with unfortunate abandonments the racecourse team is excited to welcome the flat back in style. Entertainment for the UNIBET Lincoln includes music from Brass Band ‘Flat Cap Brass’ and a live performance from Chasing Mumford, the official Mumford & Sons tribute.’ Grandstand Tickets are just £20 and flat caps are a must-wear item.
Of course, racing is free for U18s and the launch of Magical World of Racing on 29 March has all the markings of a fantastic family day out. On arrival visit Professor Dumblecaster (see what we did there) and his magical cap, children can then make their own wand and learn a spell or two, before Professor Pout inducts them into the Magical World of Racing. A tote runner is also included in the price of your ticket and they can be seen weaving between tables taking bets. When the lights go down for a race all eyes go to the window and the excitement is palpable, screens placed around the restaurant also show the races so you can re-watch anything you might have missed.

The à la carte menu caters for everyone with multiple vegan, vegetarian and gluten free options. For starters we enjoyed garlic mushrooms in a creamy sauce, with toasted focaccia topped with parmesan and a sprinkle of rocket, and a refreshing melon and pineapple cocktail served with a raspberry sorbet which proved to be an eclectic but inspired dish. This was followed by mains of tender roast chicken with a sweet carrot and swede purée, charred asparagus and a thyme scented jus, and loin of cod in a tasty prawn and lime velouté served on a bed of crushed new potatoes. All mains come accompanied with a platter of seasoned roasted potatoes, cabbage and bacon, steamed broccoli and a buttery cauliflower cheese. Portion sizes are extremely generous so make sure you take a healthy appetite with you, although once you book a table it’s yours for the entire night so there’s ample time to savour the food without worrying you’ll miss a race, you can even wait longer in between courses if you let the staff know. After a small gap we ordered dessert, a steamed double chocolate pudding in a rich fudge sauce and a lightly spiced
apple bakewell tart served with a scoop of clotted cream ice cream finished off the meal beautifully. If you still have room after this they also offer a range of coffees and liqueurs. Tickets prices run from £13 per person on a Tuesday, £19 on a Friday and £25 on a Saturday. Included in the price is a three-course à la carte meal, admission, a race card and waiting service. By this point it had become apparent that while we had certainly won with the food, the same unfortunately could not be said about our betting endeavours, but that’s part of the fun of the night and I’m sure we’ll be back to try our luck next time. Hard decision
IN THE SECOND OF OUR GUIDES TO ALTERNATIVE JEWELLERY METALS WE LOOK AT… TUNGSTEN CARBIDE. his is an exceptionally hard material and more scratchresistant than titanium, steel or any of the precious metals. Tungsten carbide is an alloy of mostly tungsten and carbon. This normally exists as a powder of fine particles in a matrix of another material such as cobalt, that allows the super-hard alloy to be moulded into the required shape: the melting point of tungsten carbide is extreme (3422˚C) so partially melting the matrix in order to mould the material is the only practical way to work it! High pressures and temperatures are required to mould it into shape and the resulting material is so hard it can only be machined or re-finished by grinding with diamond-edged tools. In addition to being extremely hard, tungsten carbide is very strong and keeps its shape very well, even after much wear. It is also dense and has a lovely weighty feel which can really be appreciated in the chunky rings we usually see in this material. Tungsten carbide has a distinctive dark grey colour which looks fantastic with either a highly reflective or brushed finish. It combines well with other materials such as carbon fibre or ceramic to create sleek industrial looks. Alongside ion plating in a variety of colours, these combinations create some of the most eye-catching contemporary designs we stock. Alternatively, wood veneers create
T
108 www.sheffieldvibe.com
an intriguing texture contrast with the metal. We even have a design inlaid with meteorite to give a fabulous ‘space-age’ feel! There are both pros and cons to a material that is as hard as tungsten carbide. Although it offers superior scratch resistance, maintaining a beautiful finish for longer, it also means that your tungsten carbide ring is not able to be resized in the future; if your fingers alter you will need to replace the ring. Tungsten carbide also requires a specialist tool to remove it in case of emergency: it cannot be cut off but instead needs to be placed under pressure by a tool which causes the ring to fracture. It is also
possible to unintentionally break a tungsten carbide ring if it experiences a sharp knock or application of force; much like a diamond, extreme hardness does not equate to indestructability! Our exciting range of tungsten carbide rings is available to view on our website or in our showroom. These rings are available from our supplier in a limited range of sizes; contact us for more information about availability. The Woman Who
VINE HOTELS HAS ENTERED INTO A PARTNERSHIP WITH SANDRA GARLICK MBE TO HOST HER INSPIRATIONAL NETWORKING EVENTS AIMED AT BUSINESS WOMEN. hen Sandra Garlick approached her (male) bosses back in the mid-noughties with the idea for a ‘women in business’ network, they considered it briefly and told her they didn’t think it would take off. She promptly handed in her resignation and started her own firm. But it took the enforced rest brought about by a broken ankle in 2016 to give this Midlands-based former solicitor the time to return to the idea, reflect on the possibilities and really give it a go.
W
112 www.sheffieldvibe.com
Looking back on what has happened since, not least receiving an MBE, it’s fair to say that Sandra was right and her bosses got it hopelessly wrong. She founded the Woman Who Achieves Awards and the Woman Who Inspires Network. She recently published the second edition of I Am A Woman Who, featuring inspirational business stories shared by women in business role models. With a background in sales and marketing, Sandra qualified as a solicitor
after having children. She started her own law firm in 2007, which became a niche Legal 500 Employment Law practice. She merged the firm in 2014, ceased to practice as a solicitor and now works with small business owners to achieve growth and ensure success through HR consultancy and business mentoring support. Sandra’s networking events are designed for attendees to make new connections, learn something new and hear from great local inspirational

WOMEN IN BUSINSESS
speakers who share their business journey. Vine Hotels has recently entered into partnership with these events to bring them to Sheffield and will be hosting them at different venues. And while men are welcome to attend, and indeed have taken to the podium as guest speakers before, the events are designed with women in mind. For example, while many morning business networking events may start at 8am or earlier, Sandra’s always begin at 9.30am, and there are very clear reasons for this. “It’s important that women have no barriers to attendance,” she says. “It’s usually women in business who take on the caring responsibilities in the home, dropping the kids off at school, checking on elderly parents, and I did not want the start time to be a barrier. You have to be there for the start and feel relaxed. “We always start with networking over coffee and refreshments, then three speakers, always local and never so high up you could not have a coffee and a chat with them. It’s normally two inspirational speakers and then one educational.” Events finish with more networking and when attendees are still talking an hour after the event, such as happened at a recent engagement at the DoubleTree Hilton in Sheffield, Sandra knows they have been successful. And while she repeats that men are welcome, she reckons there is one aspect of these networking events where the men could learn a thing or two from the women. “Women tend to share more about the highs and the lows of being in business. Men need a little more encouragement to open up,” she says. Meanwhile, Sandra thinks there is more to be done to help women in the workplace fulfil their potential. “Women tend to take career breaks so there is a natural barrier there, but it is good that more industries are becoming pro-women, offering flexible working. But in construction, engineering and technology we still need role models to inspire young girls coming through.” Sandra Garlick MBE will be hosting a Woman Who Inspires networking event at the Hotel Mercure Sheffield Kenwood Hall & Spa, on Monday 30 March 9.30am to 11.30am. There is no criteria to attend. Attendees simply book to attend each event. Go to www.eventbrite.co.uk

Airmaster design, install and provide aftercare for heating, cooling, plumbing, ventilation and associated services. As MD, Lisa supports a great team of experts to provide great customer service. “We like to deliver on time, on budget and get great feedback,” she says. Women who have inspired her include Elaine Robson-Burrell (her first full time boss); Julie Kenny, Chair of Wentworth Preservation Trust; Jackie Freeborn (Skincare Yorkshire and Custodian of the Rotherham Story) and Deborah Bullivant, Grimm & Co. Lisa adds: “There is an increasing role for women in many engineering, construction and manufacturing, rail – to name but a few – sectors. There is a skills shortage and not so many people coming in to these areas. So, time for women to go for it. “I work with a coach, Lisa Walker, and her mantra is ‘Get Clear, Get Confident’. I think that is key. Keep focussed and keep your confidence and my mum always says ‘treat others as you want to be treated, and you can’t go far wrong’. “In fact, I was a Highly Commended at the Athena Awards a few years ago and the eight principles there are ones that are very relevant.”
Claire Bell Partner and director of CJ Signs
Vehicle wrapping might sound like a male-dominated industry but that doesn’t faze Claire Bell. Her husband Jason set up CJ Signs, a specialist vehicle wrapping company based in Killamarsh, Derbyshire, in 2004 and Claire became a partner in the business shortly afterwards, not long after giving birth to the couple’s second son. CJ Signs became a limited company in 2011 with Claire and Jason taking on 50/50 directorships. In the last couple of years Claire has helped the company exceed expectations, with its level of growth resulting in a move to new larger premises. Claire deals with all office duties and last year successfully applied for a Global Derbyshire grant which facilitated the purchase of a new wider format printer as well as additional equipment including computer software, workstations and a large-scale laminating machine. “I’m the only female here amongst a team of men and that doesn’t bother me – or them – at all,” added Claire.

“My passion for carpets started at a well-known, high-end independent retailer in Sheffield, and from there I worked my way up to being an area business manager for a luxury carpet manufacturer, before moving on to be a commercial flooring representative for a well-respected company in Yorkshire,” we’re told by Sam Round, owner of S11 Carpets and Flooring. “Running my own business in a wonderful city like Sheffield has always been the dream, and now I’m here I couldn’t be happier. “As the owner of S11 Carpets I pretty much do it all – except the fitting! I give advice and help with design ideas, and I personally go out to visit customers in their own homes to take out samples and measure up,” says Sam. “It’s so important to me to provide a top class service throughout. “My advice to other women would be to work hard and be smart, no one is entitled to anything without putting in the right amount of effort and gaining experience along the way.”

As the owner of a mobile dog grooming business I drive to people’s homes to groom their dogs and give them a deserved pamper. My aim is to build on the success I have had so far and reach the point where I have a shop as a base, so dog owners can bring their pets to me for grooming. As a woman in business I’d advise any other women who are setting out on their own to be positive and not let anyone push them away from their goals. We can do it if we put our minds to it, so don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

LOGISTICS
Times are changing
PETER KENNAN, CHAIR OF THE TRANSPORT FORUM OF SHEFFIELD CHAMBER OF COMMERCE & INDUSTRY, LOOKS AT THE CHALLENGES FACING LOGISTICS IN 2020. e have seen a significant increase in warehousing and logistics operations in Sheffield City Region over recent years, with the I-port being one of a number of great examples of huge investment in new buildings and associated infrastructure. These investments have brought jobs. Jobs are always welcome and creating them was a key focus of the last Strategic Economic Plan for the Region. Many jobs in the sector are not particularly well paid though and so we do have to strike a balance going forward. We cannot afford to just be Shed Central and we definitely are not. We are at the cusp of change in the logistics sector with robots and other automation technology performing jobs in the sector which humans used to do. We cannot afford to lose sight of that either. Change is also coming to freight road
W
118 www.sheffieldvibe.com
transport as a result of the climate emergency and calls to drive down CO2 and dangerous emissions. Moving more trunk haul freight by rail will have to be part of the answer and we are well placed with four rail freight terminals in Sheffield City Region and the ability to create more. To use rail more for the trunk haul we need more capacity on the existing network and this is where HS2 comes in (should better be called High Capacity 2) as it takes a lot of passenger load off the existing lines, freeing them up for more freight. Lorries powered by electricity or other alternative fuel can do the local distribution but being realistic, we are not going to magic up lorries with a range of over 50 miles for quite some time and so we know we have to change the way we do things, but it is not going to be easy.
We have a major strategic asset in Doncaster Sheffield Airport, which handled 18,500 tonnes of freight in 2019 with around ten per cent growth anticipated in 2020. DSA is focused on air freight which is being squeezed out across the UK and, in many cases, UK goods are travelling in and out of airports in mainland Europe and are then shipped by sea and road to the UK. Whatever your view on air travel, the UK will need air freight capacity to support the growth of many sectors and to deal with just in time deliveries and with perishables that cannot be shipped any other way. We are very fortunate that we have DSA, with capacity available, to take on this challenge. Times are changing in the sector and Sheffield City Region is well placed to benefit over the years ahead with the assets at our disposal.

It’s all Greek Learning the classics? It’s all Greek to these young pupils from Sheffield’s Westbourne School. The Year 3 children at the Broomhill co-educational independent school visited nearby Weston Park Museum for a special ‘Offerings to Athena’ workshop. During the session they re-enacted the story of the birth of Athens as one of the most important cities of the ancient world, built a model of the Parthenon and learnt about the goddess Athena, the city’s protector.

ANNE ROGERS, HEAD OF GRAYSONS’ PRIVATE CLIENT TEAM, TALKS ABOUT THE MOST IMPORTANT FINANCIAL DECISION YOU’LL EVER MAKE.
Don’t leave inheritance to chance – make a will! o-one wants to think about dying, let alone talk about it. However, if you want to be sure that your estate goes to the people you want it to go to when you die, talk is exactly what you need to do. The only way you can be in control of where your money, property and other assets go when you die, is to make a will. It is probably the most important financial decision you will make in your lifetime. If you die without making a will (intestate), your assets will be distributed according to strict intestacy rules which set out, in order, who should inherit your estate, from spouses and civil partners, through children, grandchildren, parents and other family. You can find the full rules of intestacy on our website at www.graysons.co.uk/wills-estatestrusts/intestacy-rules/ If there are no surviving relatives as detailed within these rules, your estate will go to the Crown (i.e. the government) after it has been unclaimed for 12 years. It is estimated that the government earned £8million through unclaimed estates in 2016, and in November 2018 there was approximately £2.1billion in outstanding unclaimed estates. Married couples and civil partners often think they don’t need a will as “everything will go to their spouse”, but that is not necessarily true, especially if you have children. In that case, your
N
spouse would only receive a percentage of your estate and the rest would go to your children – which may not be what you want. Getting married or entering into a civil partnership revokes any previous will, so if you want to be in control of how your estate is distributed – for instance if you want to ensure that children from a previous marriage are provided for – you will have to make a new will. If you do have a will and are separated, but not divorced, it is important to note that your estranged spouse could still inherit your estate – which again may not be what you had wanted. If you are not married and want your partner to inherit, you will need to write a will and specify that, as unmarried partners – even if they are the other parent to your children – are not treated in the same way as spouses or civil partners – despite the common law marriage myth. You can use your will to nominate guardians for your children if they are under 18 and you can set up trusts and trustees so that your estate can be properly managed for your children in the event of your death. Anne Rogers, head of Graysons’ private client team, says: “There are many issues to consider, but the key to ensuring that your estate is distributed
exactly as you would want it to be is to ensure that you have a properly drafted, valid and legal will (if your will is found to be invalid, you will be treated as having died intestate). Information within it needs to be clear and unambiguous so that it is not left open to those wishing to make a claim – although it is important to note that under the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependents) Act 1975, adult children may be able to make a claim if they feel that reasonable provision has not been made for their maintenance.” Graysons’ expert advisors will guide you through the process and make sure that your will clearly identifies your wishes, enabling your representative to distribute your estate efficiently. Making a will may not be as expensive as you think – and can certainly save money and distress caused by dying intestate. Contact us now to make a free of charge appointment in which we can discuss your wishes and offer you the best advice. HEALTH
Love and happiness TAKE POSITIVE STEPS IN 2020 AND BEAT THE NEW YEAR BLUES. BY RACHEL MARTIN.
inter may well bite us with a late burst of bad weather but evenings are getting lighter, days are longer and now’s the time to peep from under the duvet and take a look at what we can do to get healthier and feel better in 2020. When it comes to weight most people fall flat trying to completely overhaul their eating habits or crash diet and attempt to hit the gym five times a week. It can be tempting to go too hard, too quickly and it’s no wonder these hardcore regimes have a high failure rate. By choosing to follow a realistic healthy eating plan (we recommend asking your GP or nutritionist for their advice before making any large
W

adjustments to your diet) and getting at least 30 minutes of exercise, three times a week to start, you’ll see huge improvements in your mood, energy levels and of course, your overall figure. Taking care of your body is a great first start, but it’s easy to overlook mental health. This is increasingly becoming a part of mainstream thinking as we see how a new and improved positive mindset is the key to a better life Start by doing more for yourself. Too often we take care of everyone but ourselves, to the detriment of our own wellbeing. Even small, quiet moments reading your favourite book or taking a stroll before everyone in the house
wakes up, can be a wonderful first start to taking care of you. Getting enough sleep is hugely important too. Turn off your devices an hour before you hit the hay to secure as much solid, uninterrupted rest as you can (seven to nine hours is ideal). And focus on your strengths. It’s easy to be too hard on ourselves. Selfdeprecation may seem an admirable quality from afar, but if you’re constantly putting yourself down, both aloud and in your head, it’s time to readjust your attitude. Remember, an improved mental wellbeing and the regular practise of mindfulness will make it much easier to carry out and stick to your other resolutions.

Monumental challenge TWENTY-FIVE KILIMANJARO CLIMBERS RAISE OVER £100,000 FOR SHEFFIELD CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL. group of determined charity supporters from across Yorkshire and Derbyshire recently headed to Tanzania to climb Africa’s highest peak, Mount Kilimanjaro, for Sheffield Children’s Hospital. The compassionate trekkers included nurses, teachers, businesspeople and families who have been helped by the hospital. They started as strangers with one goal, to make the facilities at Sheffield Children’s the best they could by raising lots of money. The Kilimanjaro trek took seven days and featured climbs of over 1,000m, taking in difficult altitudes as well as tricky climates. The group were exposed to extreme elements, testing the group’s resilience with spells of hail and snow. The summit trek was the most demanding, involving more than nine hours of hiking in freezing temperatures

throughout the night. Despite the challenging conditions, they reached the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro during the early hours, having raised over £100,000 for the hospital. Scott Bailey, one of the climbers and a long-term supporter of the charity, said: “Summit night was by far the hardest part but knowing the difference we were making for young patients at the hospital
kept us all going. Reaching the top together is an experience I’ll never forget.” After they summitted the world’s tallest free-standing mountain, the team descended for 36 hours, rapidly dropping altitude levels until they reached the base. Cheryl Davidson, another member of the team, who organised the event for The Children’s Hospital Charity added: “From start to finish, the trek was a difficult experience for everyone, but we thought of the amazing patients at our hospital and what they go through every day. They were the motivation when times were tough.” Having completed one of the most difficult events The Children’s Hospital Charity has ever planned, it’s safe to say the team have become friends for life. Another climber, Rachel Bearpark,

who is a health visitor for Sheffield Children’s Hospital continued: “We only spent ten days together, but we’ve become one big family. You eat, cry and laugh together. We couldn’t have asked for a better team to share the experience with, all the hard work has been absolutely worth it.” The more than £100,000 raised will go towards the Build a Better Future appeal, to help build a new Emergency Department and on-site Helipad at Sheffield Children’s Hospital, as well as transform the Cancer and Leukaemia ward. Sheffield Children’s Hospital’s Emergency Department is a nationally designated Major Trauma Centre for South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw. The department was designed to see 32,000 children a year but last year saw 56,965 patients. The appeal would also create muchneeded space, particularly for criticallyill patients by expanding the resuscitation area. It will also create more treatment spaces, a dedicated space for patients with mental health issues or learning difficulties and a separate area for adolescents which is not currently available.
The fundraising will also help build an on-site helipad, which will mean patients can be brought to the hospital via air ambulance outside of daylight hours. Helicopters currently land in the nearby Weston Park during the day and cross the A57 to access the Emergency Department. The final strand of the appeal will transform the Cancer and Leukaemia ward at Sheffield Children’s Hospital. The ward treats children from babies through to 19-year-olds in South Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and Derbyshire and even as far south as Northampton. It is one of 20 principle treatment centres in the UK and also cares for patients who have other problems including bleeding and inherited disorders. The refreshed ward would have private patient rooms with en-suite facilities, giving patients a place to make their own and space for a parent to sleep comfortably alongside them. Under the plans, the ward footprint would also be increased, with larger bed bays and more isolation rooms.

Combined CO2 emissions 100 – 112 (g/km). Figures shown are for comparability purposes; only compare fuel consumption and CO2 figures with other vehicles tested to the same technical procedures. These figures may not reflect real life driving results, which will depend upon a number of factors including the accessories fitted (post-registration), variations in weather, driving styles and vehicle load.
