PREVIEW hen it comes to the grand plans to transform Doncaster Sheffield Airport into a huge ‘aerotropolis’ capable of transforming the region’s economy, it would seem the sky’s the limit.

W

When the original airport was opened in 2005 and lumbered with the decidedly ungainly title of Robin Hood Airport Sheffield Doncaster, the future of this former RAF Finningley station seemed turbulent to say the least, despite being launched in a blaze of publicity. But early uncertainty seems to have vanished and a 20-year master plan for the 1,600-acre site certainly bodes well for the future. More flights have been added in recent years and passenger numbers have soared as a result, but that is only part of the story. At the heart of a £280million project are plans for a 5.5million sq ft expansion of the airport’s capacity to handle up to 250,000 tonnes of cargo a year with a new hotel and leisure complex to be created. And this project is not just about air miles as the plan includes the laying of seven miles of railway track to link a new airport station to the East Coast Mainline, bringing nine million potential passengers from as far apart as

Newcastle and North London to within 90 minutes of the airport. If the project becomes a reality it will be big news for Sheffield City Region. This month in First For Business, consultant editor Andy Waple examines the numbers behind this ambitious project. Still on the subject of transport, the Sheffield Motor Show is back with a new home, new attractions and new cars. Whether you are responsible for your business fleet or just looking for something to turn heads in the company car park, this year’s event on 16 June will transform The Moor into a vehicle extravaganza as well as raising money for a string of good causes. The gender pay gap has always been a controversial topic. You may have thought the 1970 Equal Pay Act, and the Equality Act which followed some 40 years later, would mean the years of men being paid more than women for doing the same job would be consigned to the history books. But recent high profile examples from the television and film industries proved this was far from the case, and the issue is very much alive closer to home too. Feature writer Hannah Sanders takes a look at what it all means nationally and in Sheffield City Region.

CHRIS WILSON, EDITOR

With an increasing focus on cutting waste in all aspects of business, the concept of sustainable food is gaining ground across modern society. In Sheffield there are a number of organisations including Uwrapped, Regather and the Real Junk Food Project. All these businesses are finding new ways to tackle the issue of how to feed the world while cutting out food waste, minimising the damage to the environment. Can such admirable ideals survive in the harsh modern business climate? Hannah Sanders meets some people who believe they can. Along with our regular business news and the latest motoring round-up, that’s just a taste of what’s in First For Business this month. Let us know what you think by tweeting us @ffbmagRMC

BLUE-SKY THINKING

GRAND PLANS TO TURN DONCASTER SHEFFIELD AIRPORT INTO A HUGE ‘AEROTROPOLIS’ COULD TRANSFORM THE REGION’S ECONOMY, SAY BACKERS. ANDY WAPLE REPORTS.

AGENDA

A

n ambition to turn the region’s airport into a huge “aerotropolis” of US-style proportions would transform the economy of the whole of the North of England if its 20-year masterplan succeeds say business leaders. The vision for the future of Doncaster Sheffield Airport and its 1,600-acre site was launched in a blaze of hope and glory and has created real optimism throughout South Yorkshire and beyond. Although the proposals are still at a “conceptual stage” a fully-costed business plan has been drawn up and hopes are high that the complete dream will become reality by 2037. Expansion proposals are much more embracing than simply adding flights and raising passenger numbers, yet it is hoped that one will stimulate the other. Central to the £280m project

developed over surrounding land are 5.5 million sq ft of space for businesses and the expansion of the airport's capacity to handle up to 250,000 tonnes of cargo per year. A new shopping, hotel and leisure complex would be created. The “aerotropolis” would provide a huge boost to regional tourism, accelerating

the expansion and construction of major attractions close to the airport, such as the Yorkshire Wildlife Park and a proposed PGA golf course of European significance. Estimates suggest the fully developed concept, known as Aero Centre Yorkshire, would deliver an economic impact of an

additional £3.2bn to the region, bringing 73,000 jobs. Funding for the project would need to come from government and the private sector. Despite its seemingly over-ambitious aspirations, the project’s success could be down to the laying of just seven miles of railway track to serve a newly constructed railway station at the terminal. Costing £170m, the station would link the airport to the East Coast Mainline bringing nine million potential passengers from as far apart as North London and Newcastle to within 90 minutes of the airport. The rail links would encourage airlines to open new routes and could unlock a huge boost in passenger numbers - from 1.2 million to 4.7 million. Airport owners, Peel Holdings, say a station could be opened within just five years and its cost would be far outweighed by the economic benefits. Airport chairman Robert Hough said: “It is straightforward to build and deliverable

in five years. It is of national significance for aviation and the economy, particularly the North, and we want to see it realised as soon as possible. “If we are seriously talking about rebalancing the economy and the Northern Powerhouse, this sort of scheme should have full support. It is understandable, it is deliverable, and it is not that expensive.” The station proposal has received widespread support, recognised by

Transport for the North, Network Rail and current train operators as well as business leaders and politicians. Sheffield City Region leaders believe the project would help transform the North of England and provide advanced manufacturing, logistics and aviation-led innovation opportunities. Nigel Brewster, vice-chairman of the Sheffield City Region Local Enterprise Partnership said: “Doncaster Sheffield Airport is central to the city region achieving its economic plan of 70,000 additional jobs, an additional £3.1billion GVA and 6,000 new businesses. We have always seen growth of the airport as being a key priority, but no one ‘actor’ can make this growth happen. We must come together with Peel, Doncaster Council, and Transport for the North – and the city region must also do its own part through investment in local transport infrastructure. “This is why we’re also currently consulting on our own transport strategy, which will enable interventions that make most impact to us within the city region. We’re clear that it will be those interventions that join up our places locally, which will ultimately make the large-scale investments work for the businesses and residents we serve. I would urge people to discover our draft transport strategy on the Sheffield City Region website and find out how you can contribute to the debate.” Sir Nigel Knowles, chairman of the Sheffield LEP, said: “With a single piece of infrastructure, one of the region’s biggest employment centres would be achieved, stimulating high-value business investment, new housing, tourism, and regional international and connectivity.” Jonathan Spruce, Strategy Director, Transport for the North, added: “Doncaster Sheffield Airport’s Vision would see it unlock significant passenger and cargo capacity and could create a major economic cluster, supporting the transformation of the North of England economy. We are currently consulting on our draft Strategic Transport Plan for the North which identifies DSA as a key economic centre and we recognise the need for enhanced rail access to DSA.” The airport’s Masterplan detailing the future development of the current site and projected growth over the next 20 years is now out for public consultation.

DONCASTER SHEFFIELD: FLYING HIGH Doncaster Sheffield Airport started commercial flights in 2005. It currently serves more than 40 destinations, with a mix of charter, low cost scheduled and freight operations. PASSENGERS With destinations already across Europe, Doncaster Sheffield Airport will be the only one in Yorkshire with a transatlantic flight when Tui launches a longhaul route to Florida as part of a large-scale expansion into the Yorkshire market. The firm is increasing its capacity at Doncaster Sheffield Airport by 110,000 additional seats, with flights to begin to Orlando from next year, as well as new services to Egypt, Croatia, Greece and Turkey. Richard Sofer, commercial director with Tui said: “We are acting upon a strong growth plans for the airport and are really pleased to be building on the already solid relationship we have with the team. “Florida is a very popular destination so we expect to see good demand in the Doncaster Sheffield area. “We like to give people a good experience and that includes the airport which is renowned for giving good customer experience.” In addition, local businesses have welcomed Flybe’s new all year round route to Belfast which launches in June. Phil Johnson, Head of Procurement at DFS, whose head office is based in Doncaster, said: “I am pleased to see DSA continue to grow with new routes and the announcement of Belfast is great news for DFS. We regularly have staff flying to and from The world’s largest cargo plane, the Antonov our operations in Belfast so AN 225, has used Doncaster Sheffield this route will be of huge benefit to our company saving both time and money.” Martin McKervey, partner at international law firm CMS Cameron McKenna Nabarro Olswang LLP, and Sheffield City Region LEP board member and transport lead, said: “This is really welcome news, connections into major UK and European cities are vital to supporting our region’s growth agenda.” The Flybe Palma de Mallorca flights will also return this summer. The twice weekly flights will run from 28 May through to 24 September. CARGO Formerly RAF Finningley, the airport is blessed with one of the longest runways outside of the South East, which means it can handle some of the largest aircraft, including the Airbus A380 SuperJumbo. It has accommodated the freight carrier, the Antonov AN 225, the world’s largest cargo plane on occasions, to the delight of avid plane spotters. Expansion plans allow for site remodeling to give the airport the ability to handle up to 250,000 tonnes of cargo per year, supporting the UK’s international trade at a time when no airports across the UK are significantly expanding cargo capacity.

THE MOOR THE MERRIER

THE SHEFFIELD MOTOR SHOW IS BACK WITH A NEW HOME, NEW ATTRACTIONS AND NEW CARS. BY RACHEL MARTIN.

very year the Sheffield Motor Show gives local dealers from across the city a platform to showcase the latest models from a myriad of manufacturers, and this year is no different. However, due to uncertainties surrounding city centre developments, the annual event, which started in 2013 and has been held in Sheffield City Centre for the last four years, will move to The Moor, courtesy of Aberdeen Standard Asset Management.

E

This year, the show will transform The Moor into a vehicle extravaganza from 9am to 4:30pm on 16 June, and 46 new cars will be exhibited. The show is a rare opportunity for anyone in search of a new car to view the latest models in one place. Dealers and manufacturers already on the list include: Lookers (Ford), Robins & Day (Peugeot), Bickerton Motors (Skoda), Stoneacre (Honda, Hyundai and Volvo),

Europa (Mitsubishi and Subaru), Burrows (Toyota and Mazda) and JCT 600 (VW). After checking out the huge range of car displays, you can be forgiven for needing a breather, and a tantalising array of food and drink and family entertainment will be on offer from a selection of outdoor market vendors and inside the Moor Market. And providing the soundtrack for the weekend will be students from The Sheffield Music Hub, who will be showcasing genres for all tastes from 12.30 to 3.50pm. “It’s always an exciting time of year when The Sheffield Motor Show arrives,” says joint organiser Roger Hart, of the Sheffield Vulcan Rotary Club. “Last year, we took over Sheffield city centre for two glorious days, and the crowds flocked to see the cars. But this year, with a new location courtesy of

Aberdeen Standard Asset Management, we promise more interaction and more entertainment. We can't wait.” Last year proved to be a huge success and funds raised from the show were divided between charities including Grimm & Co, a thriving apothecary located in the heart of Rotherham which runs innovative storytelling and writing workshops for young people; St. Luke’s Hospice,Whirlow Hall Farm Trust; Fable (For A Better Life with Epilepsy), which helps fund Vagus Nerve Stimulation Therapy for children and adults; Edale Mountain Rescue; Neurocare, which raised money for a ROSA Robot for the Royal Hallamshire Hospital to carry out brain surgery, and Rotary Charities. Sheffield Vulcan Rotary Club meets on a Tuesday evening at Abbeydale Sports Club, and this year’s funds will be split between a number of worthy local causes.

GO FOR GROWTH LOOKING TO EXPAND YOUR BUSINESS? HERE ARE A FEW IDEAS TO START YOUR BUSINESS ON THE ROAD TO GROWTH TODAY.

BUSINESS GROWTH

INCREASE SALES

USE A BUSINESS MENTOR

Look into ways that you may be able to increase sales, both to existing and new customers. This might include adding additional products or services – and this, in turn, could require new skills, more investment and more staff.

Sometimes it can be difficult for business owners – particularly sole traders – to know where to turn to grow their business. Check out the Sheffield City Region Growth Hub. https://www.scrgrowthhub.co.uk/ The Sheffield City Region Growth Hub exists to help businesses access the best possible business support for growth.

IMPROVE WHAT ALREADY EXISTS Are there any ways you could improve the products and services you currently offer? Carry out research among existing customers to determine what else they need/want. Test any changes you are considering on your customers before you spend big money on things they don’t want.

LOOK INTO NEW MARKETS Even if you already have a loyal customer base, are there other markets you could try? The internet, social media and auction websites make it easier than ever to consider selling your goods

INVEST FUNDS There are many ways of investing additional funds into your business, including bringing in new investors, obtaining bank finance, asset finance, invoice finance or crowdfunding, which is becoming an increasingly popular way for companies to finance new products or projects.

The Growth Hub acts as a ‘gateway’ so that your business can access specialists in any field of business development you need; including innovation, exporting, accessing finance or training. You will receive the same level of support no matter what sector you are in or what your postcode is. The service is designed to enable businesses across the Sheffield City Region to get the support they need to thrive. By listening to what your business needs, the Growth Hub can refer you to the experts who can help your business grow and help the region grow too. The aim of the Growth Hub is to encourage innovation, investment and collaboration to enable the creation of jobs and growth of the city region economy. The Growth Hub is overseen by the Business Growth Board, which is made up of representatives from the public and private sector, and reports directly to the Sheffield City Region Local Enterprise Partnership Board.

BOOST SKILLS It is often said that companies struggle to find highly-skilled employees so why not train your existing workforce? Consider up-skilling the staff you already have or investing in new, young talent in the form of an apprentice.

BE ACTIVE ONLINE We’ve already mentioned using the internet to sell to customers overseas but there are many other benefits to being active online. Use social platforms such as Twitter, Facebook and YouTube to create brand awareness. It’s not necessarily about selling a product or service, but letting people know who you are.

Sheffield City Region’s economy has an output of more than £30 billion pounds per year and is home to approximately 52,000 businesses which have created and sustained approximately 700,000 jobs. The Growth Hub’s aims are to build on this base and create a stronger and bigger private sector that can compete in national and global markets. The city region is located at the strategic heart of the country and covers the local authority areas of Sheffield, Doncaster, Rotherham, Barnsley, Chesterfield, North East Derbyshire, Bolsover, Derbyshire Dales and Bassetlaw. The SCR Growth Hub aims to show that wherever you are in the city region you will get access to the best possible support.

FINANCE FOR ENTERPRISE SUPPORTING BUSINESS GROWTH FOR OVER 30 YEARS. or more than 30 years, Finance For Enterprise has been supporting SMEs to access the vital funds they need to launch, expand or grow their business when there is a barrier to securing loans and finance through high street banks.

F

Operating throughout South Yorkshire, the North Midlands, Lincolnshire and Humberside, we are one of the first notfor-profit regional enterprise agencies to enable entrepreneurs and business owners to access alternative business loans. We provide a range of tailored business loans which can be accessed by start-up, pre-start and established businesses within any sector. Loans of up to £150,000 can be secured with the support from one of our dedicated investment managers, who work with you to ensure you receive the right loan for your business plans whilst providing essential business advice. As well as acting as a delivery partner for the Government backed Start-Up Loans initiative, we are also a direct fund manager for the Northern Powerhouse

Investment Fund (NPIF) across Yorkshire and the Humber. Supported by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and launched by the British Business Bank (BBB), NPIF provides loans to business owners for plans such as expansion, growth capital, recruitment and improvement in liquidity, to name just a few. Our range of tailored loan packages, which include start-up loans and enterprise loans, start at as little as £5,000. Over the last five years, our investment managers have worked closely with applicants from a range of businesses to access over £32million, which has enabled the creation of over 1,700 jobs and helped to secure the future of a similar number of existing posts. Over the last year, we have helped SMEs across the Sheffield City Region to access £8.4million in business funding, signalling an increase towards alternative, responsible business loan lending providers instead of traditional high street lenders, such as banks.

Rotherham Chamber of Commerce, we are committed to supporting and working alongside the expanding businesses making a difference to the economy, industry and business landscape throughout the region. This year, we are pleased to be the sponsors of the Business Growth award at the 2018 Chamber Business Awards and on behalf of all at Finance For Enterprise, good luck to all businesses entering the awards. CASE STUDY 1 MOVER AND SHAKER EXPANDS EXERCISE OFFERING AFTER SECURING NPIF BACKING

imoves is taking leaps and bounds towards its mission to get kids moving in schools across the country, after securing funding from the Northern Powerhouse Investment Fund and Finance For Enterprise. Imogen Buxton-Pickles secured a £50,000 investment to support the development of her online business, which provides teachers with a library of interactive activities aimed at encouraging young children to move more. The energetic entrepreneur hit on her winning idea after being employed in schools across Sheffield to deliver bespoke dance and PE lessons, realising the service had potential to help teachers and pupils nationwide. Imogen recruited her husband, Ian, to join the business, and in 2017 imoves was crowned the winner of the nationwide ActiveLab competition, a UK competition to find the most innovative small tech company helping to get the country active. Following the win, Imogen and Ian began to think about expanding the business, and inspired by the Government Active 60 campaign – which aims to get children

CASE STUDY 2 SHEFFIELD BUSINESS SMELLING THE SCENT OF SUCCESS WITH CRAFT COFFEE

Like many graduates, Jim Rose decided to travel after successfully completing his degree, but little did he know that as he began his South East Asian adventure, he would embark upon building a unique career. During their first day in Saigon, Jim and his partner were awakened by the smell of Vietnamese coffee, and decided to try the drink. Jim then spent time learning how to become a barista – understanding the workings of an independent business – whilst spending his spare time researching and refining his business ideas. By July 2016, Jim had a completed business plan, but needed to find a premises for his venture, so contacted the Sheffield City Region Launchpad programme for advice. Armed with a 100-page plan, Jim’s business advisor helped clarify his ideas, as well as providing him with access to a range of free-to-attend workshops. Jim felt he’d developed a strong case for his Vietnamese coffee venture, but faced one final obstacle: cash, and after spending time researching various different options, decided to approach

moving for 60 minutes a day – made plans to introduce an Active Classroom 30 interactive programme which would see the creation of 800 further lessons across the National Curriculum. With plans firmly in place, Imogen and Ian were halted by one problem: finance, and Ian approached alternative lending provider, Finance For Enterprise for funding. With the support of a dedicated investment manager, Ian and Imogen were able to secure a £25,000 loan from Finance For Enterprise and a further £25,000 loan from the Northern Powerhouse Investment Fund Micro-Finance Fund, enabling the pair to invest in marketing and further develop their online platform. “Britain is in the midst of an obesity crisis and we recognised that if children are active from an early age, they are more likely to continue being active in adulthood,” says Ian. “As a small, relatively new business with a limited track record, there were issues securing a business loan from traditional lenders, and without the funding from Finance For Enterprise, we simply wouldn’t have been able to expand.”

Finance For Enterprise, who helped him to secure an initial start-up loan and refine his business plan. Twelve months ago Jim launched his business, but was unsatisfied, so sought further advice from Finance For Enterprise and was able to secure an Enterprise Loan, enabling him to refine the café, re-brand to Five Rivers Coffee Co. and launch a retail branch. Five Rivers marked their first year in business by being crowned Start-up Business of the Year at the inaugural Sheffield City Region Launchpad awards. “The support I received from both Finance For Enterprise and the Launchpad programme helped me to refine my ideas,” says Jim. “It’s easy to fall into the trap of trying to do everything all at once, but the advice I received from my business advisor helped me to identify my short, medium and long term goals. “I felt I had hit a winning formula and Finance For Enterprise helped to provide the financial backing to allow me to invest in building and growing the business.”

CLASSICAL MUSIC FANS ARE IN FOR A TREAT AS WORLD STARS HEAD FOR SHEFFIELD CITY HALL. heffield International Concert Season returns this September to Sheffield City Hall, which sees a line-up of the world’s finest conductors, soloists and ensembles visiting the city for 13 unmissable concerts.

S

Some of the names set to appear on the famous Irwin Mitchell Oval Hall stage include Sir Mark Elder, Jennifer Pike, Francesca Dego, Nikolai Demidenko, Chloe Hanslip and many more. Sheffield International Concert Season can trace its roots all the way back to 1935. Manchester’s world-famous Hallé orchestra and Sheffield Philharmonic Chorus, Sheffield City Hall’s Orchestra and Choir in Residence since those early years, still play a starring role in many of the season’s highlights. The season opens on 5 October as Laura van der Heijden joins Karl-Heinz Steffens and the Hallé for Dvorák’s iconic Cello Concerto. Visits by the Russian State Symphony Orchestra and Czech National

Symphony Orchestra follow, bringing two of Europe’s finest ensembles to the City. In December Sheffield Philharmonic Chorus reunite with the celebrated Black Dyke Band for their annual City Hall Christmas Concerts. Hosted by returning presenter, BBC Radio 3’s Petroc Trelawney, these atmospheric yuletide affairs have become a staple fixture in Sheffield’s seasonal calendar, bringing families together for a rousing and heart-warming Christmas sing-along. In February, the London Mozart Players perform a special concert celebrating their 70th birthday, led as ever by the inimitable Howard Shelley, kick-starting a series of four concerts featuring Mozart concertos. Along with the following concerts from the Hallé and Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, this marks a great opportunity to experience music from the mind of the great composer interpreted by different talents in the space of a couple of months. Another highlight sees the Royal

Northern Sinfonia and Sheffield Philharmonic Chorus team up in April for Bach’s remarkable, dramatic Mass in B Minor, followed in May by a tantalising all-Russian programme from the Russian Philharmonic of Novosibirsk. Concerts at Sheffield City Hall are always a special occasion; each performance is preceded by a pre-concert talk offering a fascinating glimpse behind the scenes with one of the performers and the historic oak-panelled City Bar offers the perfect location to start the evening. PROFESSIONAL SERVICES

www.ffb-online.co.uk

UNCERTAIN TIMES CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES ON THE HORIZON AS PROFESSIONAL SERVICES SECTOR FACES UP TO BREXIT UNCERTAINTY.

T

he Sheffield City Region has a strong professional services network, with around 19,000 people employed in banking and finance, over 7,000 accountants registered with professional bodies, more than 8,000 employees in the legal sector and 7,000 people employed in insurance and pensions. But according to TheCityUK, the industry-led body representing UK-based financial and related professional services, the Brexit vote of June 2016 continues to raise uncertainties about what the future holds. Immediately after Brexit, the UK-based financial and related professional services industry identified three key priorities for the Brexit negotiations. It regards all of these priorities as essential to ensure a smooth and orderly exit from the EU, minimise disruption for customers and clients across Europe and ensure financial stability, and enable the UK to thrive into the future as the leading international financial centre.

26 First For Business | www.ffb-online.co.uk

1 Clear and upfront transitional agreements: these should include a ‘bridging period’ to cover the period between the date the UK exits the EU and the date the new partnership agreement is ratified and becomes unconditional; and an ‘adaptation period’ starting on the date the bridging period ends. 2 Mutual market access: the right option for the UK would be a bespoke UK/EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA) based on mutual recognition and regulatory cooperation. This should include mutual market access for UK-based professional services providers.

Looking beyond Brexit, the industry is facing a range of longer-term strategic challenges and opportunities.

3 Mutual access to talent: to retain its status as the leading global financial centre, the UK needs continued access to the best talent: home-grown, from across the EU and from the rest of the world. It also needs to have a visa and immigration system that enables firms to transfer talent across the world. In addition to these three critical areas, the industry has also been focused on a range of other priorities to ensure the continued flow of cross-border finance and in turn, the growth of UK-based financial and related professional services beyond Brexit. Looking beyond Brexit, the industry is facing a range of longer-term strategic challenges and opportunities. In order for the UK to maintain its continued success as the leading international centre for financial and related professional services, TheCityUK believes the government and industry must work together to explore solutions and systems that will enhance its position in the future.

FOR ALL SEASONS JAPAN IS A STUNNING PLACE TO VISIT, AT ANY TIME OF YEAR.

pen a world map and you will see the extensive Asia/Pacific region. Almost at the very centre you will see the Japanese archipelago stretching north to south along the edge of the Asian continent. Japan has lured untold number of adventurers since Marco Polo first introduced it to the world back in the 13th century as “Zipangu – the Land of Gold”.

O

Though the Japan of today may not be a land of gold, the “Neo Zipangu” does possess powerful and magnet-like attractions: great cultural variety, colourful and inspiring natural attractions beautifully interwoven by four distinct seasonal changes, not to mention the overflowing hospitality of its people. As such Japan has recovered from the natural disasters of 2011 and is vigorously gaining in popularity as a tourist destination again which anyone can enjoy on a reasonable budget and with a sense of complete security. This is where the past literally greets the future. This is where they both mingle. 30 First For Business | www.ffb-online.co.uk

Japan has a long history of absorbing advanced cultures from ancient times through the middle ages. Later it began to assimilate elements of western civilisation from the latter half of the 19th century. Through these influences, the country has added rich new dimensions and depth to its indigenous culture. This marvellous harmony between the refinements of everything ‘Oriental’ blended with leading edge technology and the urban lifestyle you find in Japan today is truly proof of its long and eloquent history.

northern Japan, spring is a time of rebirth in the name of nature and human celebration throughout the land with numerous flower festivals being held everywhere. Spring is one of the most popular times to travel and planning and booking early is imperative.

THE SEASONS

Autumn brings swirls of changing leaves, vivid hues of crimson, gold, bronze and yellow that paint the hills and mountainsides in carpets of colour, a wonderful time to visit. The Momji maple tree turning a blazing red is not to be missed.

No other country has the contrasting seasons that Japan enjoys. If you are undecided when to visit Japan, spring is spectacular when the plum and cherry blossom trees burst into bloom. From the first days of February when the plum blossoms debut in Okinawa, to the last days of May, when the last cherry blossoms fall from the trees of

Summer is playtime in the land of nature, a season of rice planting and total greenery, summer is a season for visiting Mount Fuji, enjoying the fireworks almost every night and the large scale festivals that will linger through into September, but by October Japan is enjoying the crisp cooler days of its distinct autumn.

Winter offers not only snowfall – a skier’s paradise – but sunshine and blue skies as well as cheaper prices and a quieter time to travel.

TRAVEL

CLOCKWISE FROM FAR LEFT: Okayama Castle; Nachi Waterfall; Nara Deer Park; Sagano

THE JOURNEY Start your journey in Tokyo, the most exciting metropolis in Asia where traditions from centuries past exist side by side with the ever-moving elements of the latest in urban culture that radiate their own special heat and energy. Most of the clichés are true.Tokyo is neon-wrapped, a hectic playground where trains are never late, vending machines are everywhere, but amid the bright signs and adverts there is also a Zen-like calm, often just a few steps away from the chaos. There is no real centre to Tokyo rather it has sub centres, connected by the circular Yamanote train line. It takes under three hours on the 200mph bullet train from Tokyo to Kyoto, the cultural heart of Japan, an area spared from the air raids of WW2. On the journey you can visit Hakone, an area of natural beauty and UNESCO site and then Mount Fuji, Japan’s spiritual home. Since the mountain is covered in snow most of the year, the official climbing season is limited to July and August. The climb is worthwhile but not easy; a saying goes there are two kinds of fools; those that never climb Fuji and those that climb it twice.

Arriving in the ancient capital for 1,200 years, Kyoto has numerous shrines, temples, palaces and villas, repositories of Japan’s long history, while up in the low mountains that enclose the city, small villages huddle under forested slopes, offering fascinating glimpses of rural life. You will still find geishas in the old Gion district, kimono weavers, sake breweries and numerous craftsmen and storekeepers who carefully maintain the old ways and keep alive the flame of Japan’s traditional culture. From Kyoto you can visit Nara for its parks, temples and museums. While travelling you will feel safe, women can walk safely alone almost anywhere and it’s not unusual to see children riding the subway alone whilst sleeping on trains seems to be a national pastime. Many belongings have been lost only to find them returned intact the very next day. If you travel further south, you’ll find yourself in Hiroshima, a city re-emerged from the atomic bombing, the peace flame burns in front of the memorial cenotaph, never to be extinguished until all nuclear weapons are abolished. A short distance from Hiroshima is the beautiful island of Miyajima, home to the

Itsukushima shrine, a must-see for all standing alone in the sea. The Shinto shrine is a world heritage site as is known as one of the ‘three views of Japan’. Miyajima island is a romantic place, best enjoyed staying overnight at one of the islands ryokans, a traditional Japanese inn. Numerous superb hot spring resorts, known as ‘onsens’, are in fact ryokans built on the site of a hot spring. There are some 55,000 ryokans in Japan; a room in a ryokan will usually contain an undivided room floored with tatami matting, while sleeping on a ‘futon’ bedding laid out by maids and a traditional evening meal and breakfast. Make the beautiful island of Okinawa your final stop, the perfect chance to relax on a beautiful beach, sub-tropical coral reefs, emerald seas, sunny skies and tropical vegetation abound. There are more than 150 islands stretching a chain of 250 miles. There is no litter and no bins either, this is always taken home. This is an example of the remarkable social cohesion that Japan enjoys intertwined with its heartwarming hospitality makes it such a pleasant place to live and to visit. Japan awaits you… First For Business | www.ffb-online.co.uk 31

Called the Mercedes-AMG GT FourDoor Coupe, as the name suggests, it’s marketed as the four-door version of the big flagship AMG-GT sports car. Design cues such as the front grille, headlights and thin rear tail lights indicate the similarities between it and the flagship supercar. The 63 S and 63 will come with the same 4.0-litre bi-turbo engine as found in the AMG GT supercar while the 53 S variant will come with a 3.0-litre six-cylinder hybrid motor.

ood connects with everything we do – our landscape, our health, our heritage, our life and economy – which is why it’s important we tackle the issue of food sustainability as early as possible. Many people are aware that the food they eat plays an important factor towards their health, but what is less well known is the impact that producing and consuming food has on the environment. Alongside the cars and energy we use, food has a significant impact of the health of the environment through greenhouse gas emissions, pollution, use of land and water resources and the effect of chemical products including pesticides and herbicides. Food has become a global market, and no country is fully self-sustaining when it comes to produce. Due to customer demand it’s possible to buy food that is out of season year-round, exotic produce and food that has previously been grown in low quantities. With this growing market comes the question how can we ensure sustainably

In Sheffield, there are numerous organisations including Unwrapped, Regather and the Real Junk Food Project working hard to improve sustainability across the city. Zero waste is not a new movement, but one that continues to develop as people

help the environment by reducing plastic pollution, packaging and food waste. So opening a zero waste shop seemed like a good direction to go in, and somewhere we could empower the community to address these issues too,” said Kirsty and Bex. The store will invite customers to fill their own containers with purchases including both food and non-food products, such as wholefoods and eco products, liquid refills and they will also be stocking steel straws, reusable cups and recycled glass jars. By taking this small step of filling containers with products, customers can help to cut down the consumption of the earth’s limited resources, decreases pollution on our planet and contributes to food sustainability.

become more aware of how they live, what they consume and the resulting impact. It’s about choosing to follow a sustainable and plastic-free lifestyle by purchasing, creating and consuming sustainable products that don’t have a negative impact on the environment. Unwrapped is the most recent zero waste, eco-friendly shop to open in Crookes, Sheffield and is the brainchild of scientists Kirsty Burnet and Bex Atkinson. After meeting in 2006 whilst studying for their PhDs in Ecology, Kirsty and Bex embarked on a journey to bring ‘the green city’ a shop which provided ethical purchasing while making zero waste, and encouraging food sustainability. “We like the concept of being able to

“We want this shop to be accessible to everyone, which is why we will be keeping costs down where possible. There are lots of things happening on our planet that we need to address, and sustainability is one of the big ones. We need to look at how things we consume affect the environment, and how with our growing population we can feed everyone,” adds Kirsty and Bex. Regather, a trading co-operative and cultural centre in Sharrow is celebrating the launch of the city-wide campaign ‘Making Local Food Work in Sheffield’ which aims to create a communityowned, co-operatively managed, sustainable local food system with a vision to help feed Sheffield for generations to come. Founder member, Gareth Roberts said: “We want to help communities become more resilient by encouraging co-

production, harvesting, processing and distribution through to the point of retail, consumption and food waste disposal - as well as different dimensions - social, economic, environmental, biological and political - of food systems in urban areas.

“Our mission is to grow the economy of Sheffield by developing a more productive landscape, with a focus on urban food production and to transform the resilience and sustainability of the wider urban food system.”

Every year, we waste between 30 and 40 per cent of food due to cosmetic blemishes – best before dates, weirdlooking, misshapen foods and supermarkets cancelling or reducing their orders. And in the UK alone, 15 million tonnes of food is thrown away each year, at a cost of £19 billion.

Regather will take a ‘food systems approach’ by developing hubs, services and a digital platform for sustainable transformation.

Challenging this mind-set is the starting point to tackling food waste. “Our aim is to not only reduce food waste, but to help create a more sustainable food system and further alleviate food shortages. Whilst reeducating our customers and building awareness that in fact, surplus products are perfectly fine to consume.”

THE GOVERNMENT IS ACTING TO REDUCE PAY INEQUALITY, BUT WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN? HANNAH SANDERS HAS A HANDY GUIDE TO THE ISSUE

MIND THE GAP he gender pay gap has always been a controversial topic but it has recently been forced into the spotlight by the UK Government wanting to increase awareness and improve pay equality. And, this year they introduced compulsory reporting of the gender pay gap for organisations with 250 or more employees.

T

The Equal Pay Act was first introduced in 1970, and has now been mostly superseded by part five, chapter three of the Equality Act 2010. According to the Equality and Human Rights Commission, the Act gives the right to equal pay between men and women for equal work, covering individuals in the same employment whether on full-time, part-time, casual or temporary contracts regardless of length

of service along with other workers whose contracts require personal performance of the work and employment carried out within Great Britain or where there is a close link between the employment relationship and the UK. Eight years after the Equality Act, we

The figures show that men are paid more than women in 7,795 out of 10,016 companies and public bodies in Britain, based on the median hourly pay.’

have data from over 9,000 firms (www.gender-pay-gap-serive.gov.uk) – the first of its kind in the UK – that showcases both equality and inequality within the private and public sector. As reported by The Guardian, the figures show that men are paid more than women in 7,795 out of 10,016 companies and public bodies in Britain, based on the median hourly pay. And while the figures do not reflect equal pay for equal work, they raise questions about structural inequalities in the workforce and may hold the answers to closing the gap. We’ve put together an all you need to know guide on the gender pay gap including why companies have to report on it, the next steps and the situation is in Sheffield City Region.

FEATURE

WHAT IS THE GENDER PAY GAP? Simply put the gender pay gap is an equality measure that shows the difference in average earnings between men and women. According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS) in April 2017, men earnt 18.4 pe rcent more than women, and this figure is calculated on a one per cent sample of employee’s jobs. The ONS states that from 1997 to 2017, the gap has fallen from 27.5 per cent to 18.4 per cent which is the lowest it’s ever been. The ONS reports that for full-time workers the pay gap has dropped to 9.1 per cent but for part-time the gap favours women who now earn 5.1 per cent more than men.

HOW IS THE GENDER PAY GAP CALCULATED? The Office for National Statistics headline measure for the gender pay gap uses Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings data and is calculated as the difference between median gross hourly earnings for men and women, excluding overtime, as a proportion of median gross hourly earnings, excluding overtime, for men. However this measure does not take into account equal pay for equal work.

WHY IS THERE A GENDER PAY GAP? There is no one reason behind the gender pay gap - it’s a complex and in depth issue. According to the Fawcett Society, caring responsibilities can play a big part in pay, as women often care for young children or elderly relatives meaning they are more likely to work in part-time roles which can be lower paid or have fewer opportunities for progression. Discrimination is another cause. As The Equality and Human Rights Commission has found, one in nine new mothers were either dismissed, made redundant or treated poorly so they left work, resulting in a gap in experience and lower wages when they returned to work.

WHAT ARE THE NEXT STEPS?

Also the Living Wage Foundation, states that women currently make up 62 per cent of those earning less than the living wage as they are more likely to work in lower-paid and lower-skilled jobs. Men also tend to take up the majority of senior roles, which are typically the highest paid.

– According to www.gov.uk, the Government is taking action by requiring large employers, including the public sector to publish their gender pay gap and gender bonus gap.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE GENDER PAY GAP AND EQUAL PAY? Equal pay means that men and women doing the same job should be paid the same, and this has been a legal requirement for 47 years. Under the Equal Pay Act 1970, and the Equality Act 2010, it’s unlawful to pay people unequally because of their gender. A company might have a gender pay gap if a majority of men are in top jobs, despite paying female and male employees the same amount for similar roles.

– Offering 30 hours free childcare for working families with three and four year olds. – Encouraging young women and girls to consider a wider range of careers, including in those in higher paying sectors traditionally dominated by men. – The Government has already extended the right to request flexible working to all employees, introduced shared parental leave and commissioned a review to look at how they can remove barriers preventing women from getting to the top of their careers.

WHAT IS THE GENDER PAY GAP IN SHEFFIELD CITY REGION? According to research conducted on behalf of business finance specialists Rangewell, the Mercia Learning Trust, an educational trust which sponsors some of Sheffield’s leading schools, including King Ecgbert’s, Newfield, Nether Edge Primary, Totley Primary, Valley Park Primary and Mercia School, has been revealed as the employer with the biggest gender pay gap in Sheffield. The trust’s male employees earn on average 59.6 per cent more than female colleagues. He also states that at Linbrooke Services Limited, the rail utilities contractor for Network Rail, men are recorded as being paid 39.8 per cent more than women. Rangewell further states that across Sheffield as a whole, just 28 per cent of businesses were found to be paying women the same or better than men, meaning that 72 per cent paid male employees more. A national tool (www.findgenderpaygap.rangewell.com/region/sheffield/sheffield) called Rangewell, allows residents to check gender pay gaps across the city for themselves.
