YORKSHIRE JOINS THE HIGH-SPEED GIGABIT INTERNET REVOLUTION.

connections experienced over copper. Although gigabit speed fibre may be new to the UK, it isn’t a revelation to the countless cities across the world.
As businesses across the region are now beginning to utilise new technologies which reduce the importance of location and boost productivity, this trend looks set to continue.
In the US, Chattanooga in Tennessee leads the Gigabit revolution. Chattanooga Mayor Andy Berke suggested that the city’s new network was a main catalyst for a number of successes. Since its launch in 2009 the city has seen a 3.7 per cent drop in unemployment and population increases in its downtown area is fuelling new leisure and retail businesses.
However, these new technologies are reliant on having the internet speeds to cope with demand. The good news is that the region already has the answer to this issue – the Gigabit City networks launched by CityFibre in Leeds, Sheffield, York, Bradford, Doncaster Huddersfield and Rotherham provide a jump from copper infrastructure to full-fibre gigabit – that’s 1000mbps – speed technology. This is welcome news to those businesses in the area accustomed to the slow
In Europe, Stockholm became one of the world’s first Gigabit Cities as far back as 1994. Owing to its investment in fibre optic infrastructure, Stockholm has a higher proportion of people working in high-tech companies than any other European country with 18 per cent of the region’s total workforce employed in STEM industries. So far, it has saved the local government over €250m in IT and telecoms services, delivering an estimated €1.8bn return on investment.

Closer to home, Peterborough, another CityFibre gigabit city, has experienced a major transformation in recent years. In 2015 it fought off competition from Moscow and Dubai to be crowned ‘Smart City of the Year’ – the same year it enjoyed a new record for business startup rates. In the past, many cities across the north have been ill-equipped to deal with the new demands on digital infrastructure, but with CityFibre’s launch of full-fibre Gigabit internet speeds the area is wellset to remain at the heart of the British economy for many years to come. PREVIEW hen we think of digital industries it is often in terms of small, back room outfits operated by a handful of (usually very young) friends hunched around a couple of computers. Think again.
We are pleased to welcome two new feature writers to the First For Business team this month. Hannah Sanders and Rachel Martin will be out and about, covering what’s happening in the Sheffield City Region.
Sheffield digital industries may not have the tradition of steel or manufacturing behind them, but they are major wealth creators on the region’s business landscape.
Hannah has been searching for inspiration from the annual MADE event which brings some of the world’s best innovators and speakers to Sheffield. This year it is being staged at the Crucible Theatre on 9 November and everyone attending will have the opportunity to share in practical advice from experts and peers who will offer their views, advice and experiences on growing and succeeding in business. We will have a full preview in next month’s First For Business, but there’s an early idea of what to expect in this issue.
W
Research carried out recently reveals the sector is, in fact, growing rapidly and its value to the economy, once undervalued, should be highly prized. Sheffield’s top 10 tech firms alone are closing in on £1billion annual turnover after growing 50 per cent in the last five years. Meanwhile the number of firms operating in the sector has doubled from 2010. This month in First For Business, consultant editor Andy Waple takes a close look at Sheffield’s digital revolution. One of the trailblazers is an animation studio called Red Star who provide fantastic film content for 3D and 4D attractions in special venues such as theme parks and museums. Our thanks to them for the fabulous illustration on this month’s cover.
Rachel recently met up with Paul North and Geoff Charlesworth of the UK ASEAN Business Council, at an event organised by South Yorkshire International Trade Centre and Sheffield Chamber of Commerce. Also present was Adrian Short, president director of Rolls Royce Indonesia, and he had some good news for South Yorkshire businesses whose highly sophisticated techniques put them in a prime position when it comes to finding

new business as Indonesia becomes an increasingly important export target for British companies. On a slightly smaller scale, if you run a modestly sized business there are lots of apps out there to help you with everything from keeping notes to managing social media accounts to help with video conferencing. The sheer scale of choice can be bewildering, but we have ten of the best tried-and-true options to get you started. Along with a look at how pay rates for Sheffield’s millennials compare with the rest of the country, a motoring news round-up, and the latest business news from across the region, that’s just a taste of what’s in this month’s issue. I hope you enjoy this edition of First For Business. Let us know what you think by tweeting us @ffbmagRMC.

NO MORE PLAYING GAMES SHEFFIELD DIGITAL COMPANIES BOAST ONE OF THE HIGHEST GROWTH RATES IN THE COUNTRY, WRITES ANDY WAPLE. IT’S TIME TO TAKE THE SECTOR SERIOUSLY.
S
heffield digital industries, young and eye-catching as they are, remain the forgotten wealth creators in the region, although that maybe about to change. Research carried out recently reveals the sector is in fact growing rapidly and its value to the economy, once undervalued, will become highly prized. One study determined that Sheffield digital companies boast one of the highest growth rates of any cluster in the UK, with turnover increasing to 47 per cent. Most firms in the sector, from smallest to largest, export their services internationally. A second found that Sheffield’s top 10 tech firms alone are closing in on £1billion annual turnover after growing 50 per cent in the last five years. It also discovered that the number of firms operating in the sector has risen to a total of 3,025 – more than double the number in 2010. Dr Andrew Johnston, principal lecturer at Sheffield Business School, part of Sheffield Hallam
University who conducted the second research, said: “The continued growth of the digital tech sector in Sheffield is good news for the economy. These firms generally provide skilled jobs for the region, providing employment opportunities for well-qualified workers, particularly graduates of the city’s two universities. “Also, these companies generally sell their services to the rest of the UK, Europe, and the world, putting Sheffield on the map worldwide as a centre of creativity and innovation in technology sector. “The top 10 tech companies now account for 40 per cent of employment in the sector; five years ago, they accounted for 21 per cent, highlighting

their increased importance to the fortunes of the sector. “Total employment in Sheffield’s tech sector has grown by 17.8 per cent in the past five years, again showing that the largest companies are driving this employment growth. Labelled “a snapshot” of the creative digital scene in Sheffield, the other survey was jointly commissioned by the University of Sheffield and Creative Sheffield. Dozens of companies across the Sheffield City Region working in areas of digital design, video games, digital art and culture, digital media and content, and digital making were consulted. It showed that over 21,000 people are employed in digital industries across the city region. The top 25 tech
companies in Sheffield City Region alone employ more than 12,000 people and bring in more than £2billion a year. The report found that digital companies in Sheffield are experiencing rapid growth, and concludes that Sheffield has the talent potential to continue to grow its digital capabilities and is “on the cusp of something big”, with the vast majority of companies expecting to recruit more workers over the next year. It goes on to provide a number of recommendations into how the industry can continue to grow for the mutual benefit of companies and the city region. These include improving the city’s profile, public and private sector support for ‘hubs’ for co-working, and
that Sheffield plays a greater role in “connecting the dots” between other northern cities. It also highlights how Sheffield’s pipeline of talented students and graduates can galvanise further innovation and growth for the digital sector. Stuart Green, CEO at Sheffield-based Zoo Digital said: “Having access to the huge body of students and graduates in Sheffield is a big plus. A number of our staff are graduates from the universities here, and we also take on a lot of temporary staff, especially international students based in Sheffield, so we have a pool of native speakers of other languages who are based locally. This enables us to make content available in countries around the world, working
Professor Vanessa Toulmin, Director of City & Cultural Engagement at the University of Sheffield, said: “As Sheffield continues to propel the development of the UK’s industrial strategy and make its mark in the Northern Powerhouse, it is imperative that we support our region’s growth industries. The creative digital sector in Sheffield has already made great strides. We now need to work collectively to attract and retain Sheffield’s digital talent and cultivate the digital leaders of the future.” Councillor Mazher Iqbal, Sheffield City Council Cabinet Member for business and investment, said: “Sheffield is known the world over as a city that makes. Our reputation for quality is as true and as important today for our creative and digital industries as it is for our advanced manufacturing and engineering capabilities. We innovate, we make and we create – these are themes that have really come through in the report and they are the qualities driving our transforming economy.” The news was met with a positive response from Sheffield Digital, the trade association for the city’s digital scene.
In his blog, Chris Dymond, Sheffield Digital director, said: “I think we should take the report as a starting point to dig deeper into the individual sub-sectors. We need to better understand what specific actions could be taken to help them reach a ‘critical mass’ whereby their activity is cumulative and constant, attracting attention further afield. “The way to do this would be to establish collaborations of key sector partners, made up of one or more anchor firms, the universities, college and broader education base, the independent community, freelancers, SMEs and hobbyists, an advocacy organisation for the sub-sector, at least one innovation hub or incubator and one or more relevant national institutions and industry bodies.” >>>

THE CHANNEL 4 BID Sheffield is waiting to hear if its bid to lure C4 to the city, spearheaded by Creative Sheffield with help from cultural and business players, has been successful. The Government said it will move the publicly-owned corporation out of its £100million London headquarters to another base elsewhere in the UK to help drive creative jobs throughout the regions and is scrutinising proposals from interested parties. Sheffield faces competition from Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Birmingham and Cardiff for a deal which could be worth £1.4billion to the winner’s economy and create 4,050 jobs, although the value of the move could be exaggerated according to think tank Centre for Cities. Sheffield’s case is supported by a wide range of cultural, education and
business leaders, including both universities, Warp Films and Sheffield Digital. A successful bid would see the broadcaster move into new headquarters built on vacant land near the railway station in Sheaf Square. The channel is also being offered 80,000 sq ft of office space in the nearby Digital Campus on Sheaf Street. Screen Yorkshire – which helps to get TV and film projects off the ground across the region – is backing the Leeds bid. Channel 4 has expressed concern about the relocation and argued it would be costly to move out of the capital. The bids have been submitted but the Government has not yet revealed a timescale for when the winner will be announced.

‘BE CHALLENGED, BE INSPIRED’ AFTER A COUPLE OF KEYNOTE SPEAKER APPEARANCES, MARKETING GURU GEOFF RAMM RETURNS TO THE MADE ENTREPRENEUR FESTIVAL AS HOST. HE TALKS TO HANNAH SANDERS ABOUT WHY HE CAN’T WAIT TO BE BACK IN SHEFFIELD.
G
challenge audiences into creating greater experiences for themselves and their business.
He knows the top tricks to make you craved by your customers, envied by competitors and raved about in your industry, and after being a keynote speaker for two years, this year he will be hosting the MADE Festival.
How did you get to where you are today? Speaking professionally is something I have always wanted to do but never thought it was possible. I set up the business 15 years ago as a consultant in service and marketing, and after seven years I sat down and thought what did I really want to do for the rest of my life. The answer to this was public speaking, so I developed the company so it solely focused on that.
eoff Ramm, the creator of Celebrity Service and OMG Marketing, knows the only way you can attract more customers is to create jaw-dropping marketing, along with great customer service which leads to lucrative, repeat business.
His interactive keynotes will help businesses discover out-of-this-world ideas, and with his on stage presence you’ll be on the edge of your creative seats. Here’s Geoff talking about his business, the MADE Festival and offering up advice to anyone starting a similar career.
Describe your business. I am a professional speaker at conferences all over the country on two topics – OMG Marketing and Celebrity Service and I have written three books. I speak for everybody from entrepreneurs, start-up businesses, to some of the biggest brands in the world including Specsavers and Dixons Carphone, and I love every second of it. What do you cover in your talks? I focus on how you can stand out as a business by sharing real life stories, examples and ideas, which help to 10 First For Business | www.ffb-online.co.uk
Even today I am constantly trying to improve something about myself and my service, whether that’s a new video, website or book as I want to keep one step ahead. Why do you love being on stage? It’s the thrill and buzz of being in front of the audience, delivering stories, seeing those light bulb moments and ideas being written down. Months, days and weeks go by after the talk and the biggest achievement of all, is when I get an email, phone call or video from a member of the audience saying that because of my talk, they’ve done something amazing. What’s the most satisfying thing about your business? Seeing the results, when I hear about the
achievements people have made after my talks. What’s the toughest part of your job? I suppose it would be the peaks and troughs you face, and knowing that throughout the six weeks holiday I won’t be booked in for any talks. When I first started out, the hardest part was getting known and my name out there, which took a long time to achieve. On to the MADE Festival, what’s the highlight for yourself? It is just being there, the entire day at the conference is just extraordinary. Only a few years ago it was voted number one in the UK and fourth in the world, which is just phenomenal. When the music starts you just know it is going to be a wonderful event which is interactive and inspiring. Everyone takes away new ideas, along with a thought process which can really change their business, and to be involved in something like that is pretty incredible. What are you most looking forward to about MADE this year? When I was six years old my grandad took me to the snooker hall in Newcastle, and in the last 20 minutes of the night I managed to pot some balls. Since then I have always loved snooker. This is my third MADE, and when they said it was going to be in the Crucible I
MADE ENTREPRENEUR FESTIVAL

was excited, as I have always dreamt of one day being able to walk out into the main room in the Crucible, and as of 9 November I can! For someone thinking of going to the event, because of how the venue is set out, you are surrounded, closer to the speakers and it creates a wonderful enclosed little hub. What are some of the things you will be doing throughout the day? Along with hosting the event, I’ll be running the interactive 120 challenge. With this I’ll be showing the audience techniques that will bring fresh new ideas to their business and help them outperform the competition and to top it off I can do it all in two minutes. For some of the most creative answers, I’ll be giving out a free signed copy of my book. Why do you think it is important to educate and inspire entrepreneurs and business owners? I think it isn’t just important, it is vital.
MADE gives people the opportunity to hear the truth about running a business including the hardships and successes which is invaluable information. What advice would you give to anyone starting a similar career to yourself? Don’t believe everything that you are told and create your own future. I was told many years ago that you can’t make a living from being a keynote speaker – I dispelled that myth years ago. Another thing is to create a brand, and above all serve your clients better than anyone else, as other businesses can beat you on marketing but nobody can beat you on service and that is your key differentiator in the market.
2. Take your work seriously but not yourself – make sure to have fun and enjoy work. 3. Service is key. Remember that people choose your service not because of price but because of you. The trick to business and long-term success is getting your clients to come back time and time again and that is done by the service you provide. Do you have anything else to add? Be challenged, be inspired and let’s have some fun at MADE this year – it will be the best time spent in 2017 for businesses and entrepreneurs. For more information visit www.madefestival.com.
What are your top tips on business success? 1. Always change, develop and evolve yourself and your business. The business you start today will not be the same one you have in three years’ time, or even a decade. First For Business | www.ffb-online.co.uk 11

SEEING IT THROUGH BUILDING A SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS IS ABOUT LEARNING FROM YOUR SETBACKS AND BATTLING ON WHEN THINGS GET TOUGH, SAYS HAYLEY KOSEOGLU OF CRYSTAL CLEAN.
C
rystal Clean is a commercial cleaning and hygiene company which prides itself on its high standards. Launched in 2008 by Managing Director Hayley Koseoglu, it has developed an excellent reputation in its field, working for clients in office-based businesses, industrial, engineering and manufacturing companies and car dealers. As well as daily contract cleaning, Crystal Clean can provide clients with computer telephone sanitisation, washroom hygiene solutions and tea towel laundering. The company also offer additional services including commercial carpet cleaning and window cleaning. Understanding its customers’ needs is a main priority for Crystal Clean reflected in the tailor-made corporate cleaning service it offers to suit specific customer requirements. With the MADE festival just around the
corner, Hayley offered some insights into what being a female entrepreneur means to her. “I am often asked what is it like to be a female entrepreneur which I find a really strange question,” said Hayley. “Being an entrepreneur means different things to different people. By definition it is the willingness to start a new business but in reality it is much more than this.” “I set my business up from a very young age as a self-employed person and in those early days, I never envisioned what it has acutally become.” “Entrepreneurship to me is just a fancy word for hard work, determination and having the strength to continue, even when things get tough. It is a journey in which we grow, develop and learn as people. I have seen successes, failures, made big mistakes and little ones, but it is how you overcome these that defines you and your business,” adds Hayley.
“Entrepreneurship can also be about finding something that doesn’t quite work and generating a solution to that problem. Take the cleaning industry, it is a highly competitive and saturated marketplace. We are completely different in the way in which we operate, which in turn produces different results to our competitors. I found a solution to a problem within the industry and that became our focus, which is why we have been successful as a business.” Get in touch with Hayley to find out more about the services offered by Crystal Clean and how they can help your business.

ASIAN OPPORTUNITY UNLOCKING THE SOUTHEAST ASIAN NATIONS TO SHEFFIELD CITY REGION BUSINESSES WAS THE HOT TOPIC AT A RECENT TRADE EVENT.
ver 20 South Yorkshire businesses gathered at Sheffield Chamber of Commerce to hear from Paul North and Geoff Charlesworth of the UK ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) Business Council.
O
The event, organised by South Yorkshire International Trade Centre and Sheffield Chamber of Commerce, also welcomed Adrian Short, who is both the President Director of Rolls-Royce Indonesia and President of the British Chamber of Commerce in Indonesia.
The aim of the event was to discuss and develop international opportunities available for South Yorkshire businesses in the ASEAN business bloc, and all businesses were given the opportunity to meet Paul and Geoff on a one-to-one basis, in order to discuss opportunities specific to their business sector.
Adrian’s two part presentation talked about the advanced manufacturing techniques companies like Rolls-Royce require today, and what they will require in the future. He commented how South Yorkshire businesses already have an advantage due to the highly sophisticated techniques employed in this region, and the extraordinary market that is Indonesia, and how it is rapidly becoming one of the most important export targets for British companies.
Geoff and Paul gave an overview of doing business in SE Asia, commenting on the continuing high growth and subsequent demand for supplies and raw materials from Europe, and a specific highlight was made on the popularity of the ‘Made in the UK’ products and services which are sought after in this region. 14 First For Business | www.ffb-online.co.uk
Since the launch of the Global Business network in 2013, the South Yorkshire International Trade Centre has introduced hundreds of businesses to high growth,
high opportunity markets across the world. SYITC (South Yorkshire International Trade Centre) say the will continue to invite ‘on the ground’ international partners to Sheffield to meet businesses wishing to develop their business overseas. Nick Patrick, SYITC commented: “We offer a 360-degree service in international trade, and that means, whatever your product, your county, or your problem, we will find your solution. “Within SYITC, we’ve got a high amount of experience on the international platform, and to that end, we’ve been asked by the British Chambers of Commerce to develop a platform for all Chambers in the UK so that we can help them with international trade difficulties, particularly concerning HMRC.”

ADRIAN SHORT ON INDONESIA: A COUNTRY TOO BIG TO IGNORE
“
ow one of Asia’s most vibrant economies, Indonesia is simply a country too big to ignore. It is politically stable, enjoys an ideal geographic location, has an abundance of raw materials, is renowned for its traditional manufacturing capabilities and its tourism, aerospace and maritime sectors are robust.
N
“These are strong foundations to build Indonesia’s future on and by moving from a largely traditional manufacturing economy, to a high value manufacturing based economy, the country is finding its place in the global supply chain – especially as it invests in educating leaders who can play a part in driving this change. “We’re seeing a global shift towards ever more complex manufacturing techniques, partly because companies are getting better at analysing and utilising data. This means there’s a need for more complex parts, smarter software and highly skilled people who can provide a service alongside a product. At Rolls-Royce, for example, data is playing an increasing role in how we serve our customers and design future products. “By nurturing innovation, the country will be in the position to create products and brands that are globally respected, establish a reputation for excellence and export sophisticated products. “We are already seeing this happen in some areas. Indonesia is the fifth biggest smartphone market in the world today – according to the managing director for Google, a million unique users go online every month – and it is now attracting more and more companies to manufacture and assemble components for smartphones at different stages of
the supply chain, while a host of madein-Indonesia smartphone brands are also competing locally with global giants. “However, collaboration is key. Creating a whole ecosystem of leaders in the manufacturing and education sectors who have a global mind-set can help drive this change. Leaders who will look beyond the region to understand the challenges companies abroad are facing – and find a niche for Indonesian companies to respond to these challenges. “In higher education, these leaders can partner up with businesses and the manufacturing industry to nurture the right talent (especially people capable of working with high-end technology) and fuel a rigorous research and development culture. This is not about university rankings; this is the battle for ideas that solve problems, and Indonesia’s higher education network can propel the country forwards. “The world is changing at a staggering rate and inspiring people at an early age is important. Given the demographic dividend, and that 50 per cent of Indonesians are under 30, the country is betting on young people to fuel the economic boom, by starting businesses that have global appeal. “The International Learning Experience Programme, which Rolls-Royce is supporting, is a great example of this. The initiative saw higher education leaders from Indonesia travel to the UK to understand higher education trends, as well as learn about the needs of manufacturing companies and how universities can collaborate with them on research and development. “These aren’t quick fixes and the effects of these changes may not be seen
overnight, but laying the groundwork now could have an impact within the next decade. Indonesia’s economic growth projection sits at around about five per cent – it can vary from six to seven per cent, depending on commodities – meaning it will become a top ten economy within the next ten years, and potentially grow further, depending on where you draw the line. “The European Union’s relations with Indonesia are also developing rapidly, reflecting Indonesia’s status as the third largest democracy with the fourth largest population in the world, a regional ‘giant’ representing some 35 per cent of the ASEAN GDP and 255 million inhabitants, and an emerging global player (G20 member, eighth economy in the world in purchase price parity). “Indonesia is the first ASEAN partner to have signed a Partnership and Cooperation Agreement (PCA) with the EU, which provides the legal and political umbrella for the bilateral EU-Indonesia relations. Entered into force in May 2014, the PCA provides for wide-ranging cooperation in the areas of political dialogue and security, trade, investments and economic cooperation, as well as in the strengthening of people-to-people ties through mobility, educational and cultural exchange programmes. “There are challenges to be met, of course, and you need to adopt a careful approach, as, like many ASEAN countries, culture matters, and you need to ensure you understand the cultural manners and the cultural approach to that. But if we, and Indonesia get this right, it can play a key role in a global supply chain, and become a hub for advanced manufacturing as part of creating a successful and sustainable economic future.” First For Business | www.ffb-online.co.uk 15

SUCCESS STORIES YOUNG PEOPLE ARE REAPING THE BENEFITS OF APPRENTICESHIPS AND TRAINEESHIPS FROM THE SOURCE.
FROM TRAINEESHIP TO FULL-TIME EMPLOYMENT Former Source trainee, Ross Faben (18) has secured a full-time position at Meadowhall following a year long apprenticeship with the shopping centre. Ross completed his retail path apprenticeship as an apprentice shopping centre operative, studying a level two in customer service, and has gone on to secure a full time contract within Meadowhall’s Oasis food court. But his journey into employment began when he joined The Source’s traineeship programme. When Ross finished school at 16, he went on to sixth form, but found it wasn’t right for him. He found The Source’s traineeship programme as an alternative; a traineeship programme which equipped him with the skills he needed to go onto to successfully apply for the Meadowhall apprenticeship vacancy. Through the traineeship, Ross received a work placement and customer service training, help with CV writing and employability training, and help to further develop his math and English skills. Commenting on his future, Ross said: “I feel I have now opened the door to many opportunities in the future. I hope I can progress onto other qualifications, so I can be a supervisor, and I would love to be a retail store manager one day. Ross Faben

TRAINEESHIPS AND YOUR BUSINESS – CAN YOU HELP DEVELOP A YOUNG PERSON’S FUTURE? A traineeship is a training programme with quality work experience, designed to help young people develop skills employers are looking for. Traineeships can last up to six months, but are typically shorter, and it is hoped that trainees progress into either permanent employment or an apprenticeship. A traineeship includes: 8 $+1./ +" 3+.' ,( !)!*0 3%0$ * !),(+5!. 8 ! 0+. 0. %*%*# %* (1 %*# 1/0+)!. /!.2% ! * !),(+5 %(%05 8 !(, 3%0$ *#(%/$ * ) 0$/ By offering a work placement opportunity, employers can help to develop skills needed for their sector and their individual business, as well as preparing the business for future apprentices. Source tutor, Stephanie Simms, who co-ordinates The Source’s traineeship programme, says: “A traineeship provides young people with the education and training they need to successfully move into an apprenticeship or other employment. We focus on equipping our trainees with the skills and experience local employers are looking for. “It can be hugely beneficial for employers to take on a young person who has already experienced the workplace and has started to think and acts like an employee. An employer with an apprenticeship vacancy can take on a trainee as a way to ‘try before you buy’ – that trainee can bring fresh ideas to the business and by offering opportunities for establish employees to develop their coaching and mentoring skills, they can help the business develop a loyal and talent workforce. If you are interested in finding out about traineeships and how they can work for your business, call: 0114 263 5691 or email: community@thesourceacademy.co.uk

CUBANA’S CULINARY DREAM TEAM HAS A NEW HEAD CHEF AND A NEW MENU. ith over a decade as second in charge – there was no-one better to take control of one of Sheffield’s flagship kitchens.
W
Erkland Xhaja is celebrating his move to head of the Cubana kitchen in Leopold Square with the unveiling of his first menu. He worked passionately under the command of former head chef Fabian Cruz for over 13 years – Fabian himself had been there since the day the celebrated venue first opened on Trippet Lane, many years before its move to bigger premises. Albanian born Erkland moved to Italy as a child before settling in Sheffield as a teenager. He originally started working at Nonnas on Ecclesall Road, joining Cubana in 2002 – Erkland now heads up a team of six that includes some of the
most experienced and well-respected chefs in the city in the Cubana kitchen that caters for hundreds of covers every week and is now one of the city’s busiest independent bar/restaurants. He is joined in Cubana’s culinary team by Nicolino Dente, former owner and head chef of Ecclesall Road’s Santinos, Stuart Berry, the original head chef at Nonnas and former owner of Chesterfield Road restaurants Kitos and Swanky Franks, and Ryan Christian, former owner and head chef of Sharrowvale Road’s The Pasta Bar. Erkland’s new menu sees 12 new dishes in a menu consisting of over 50 tapas dishes. It includes his own twist on the celebrated Brazilian stew made with diced pork shoulder, chorizo, smoked bacon, black beans, red peppers, tomato purée and smoked paprika.
There’s also a big emphasis on fresh fish dishes including a seafood paella served in a traditional paella pan at your table and several tapas dishes with inspiration taken from trips to the Canary Islands – home of Erkland’s partner. Cubana co-owner Adrian Bagnoli said: “There’s no-one better qualified than Erkland to develop the Cubana menu. The new dishes the team have come up with are some of the best we’ve served and fit in perfectly with the ever-present Cubana favourites for the perfectly balanced tapas menu. I’m looking forward to seeing how popular the new dishes will be and receiving feedback from our regular customers.” The full menu can be viewed online at www.cubanatapasbar.co.uk

WE GET A GLIMPSE OF THE FUTURE IN THIS MONTH’S MOTORING ROUND-UP, WRITES RICHARD ABBEY.
PILOT THE FUTURE The Audi A8 has long been one of the most technologically advanced cars on the road – and the new model, set to be launched next year, will be no different. The new luxury saloon will be the first production car in the world to have been developed for highly automated driving. From 2018, Audi will gradually be taking piloted driving functions such as parking pilot, garage pilot and traffic jam pilot into production. These will essentially allow the car to drive itself under certain circumstances. Outside, the A8 has a brand new look and will set the benchmark for a new design era for the entire brand.
ALL-WHEEL ALFA Alfa Romeo has been one of the stand-out manufacturers this year; the Giulia impressed the world over and their first foray into the SUV market looks like following suit. The Stelvio, available now, features two engines – a 2.2-litre 210hp diesel and 2.0-litre 280hp petrol, both with all-wheel drive. Rear wheel drive options will also be available at a later date.
The new A8 will debut with two extensively re-engineered V6 turbo engines – a 3.0-litre TDI and 3.0-litre TFSI. These engines, and subsequent ones, will all feature mild hybrid technology. Alfa Romeo Stelvia
Four trim levels offer plenty of choice – Stelvio, Super, Speciale and the limited production Milano Edizione. All build on standard specifications of 17-inch alloy wheels, LED rear lights, dual-zone climate control, Alfa D.N.A. rotary driving mode selector and a UConnect 8.8-inch display infotainment system. Like all Alfas it’s a looker too. Prices start from £33,990.
FAST LEARNER We’ve already seen a new Hyundai i30 and Tourer this year; 2018 will the range swell further with the addition of the i30 Fastback, a sporty five-door coupe. “The i30 Fastback is a real game-changer,” explains Thomas Bürkle, chief designer at Hyundai Design Centre Europe. “We are the first volume brand to enter the compact segment with a stylish and sophisticated five-door coupe.” Initially, customers will be able to choose from a 1.4 T-GDI turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 140PS or 1.0 T-GDI turbocharged three-cylinder engine with 120PS. All come with the Integrated Stop and Go (ISG) system for increased efficiency. Inside, the i30 Fastback will have an optional eight-inch touchscreen which will include state-of-the-art connectivity features such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
IMPREZA IMPRESSES This month sees the unveiling of the fully-redesigned Subaru Impreza. Retaining its all-wheel drive system and boxer engine, the new model has a lower centre of gravity, improving handling stability, hazard avoidance and increasing steering response. New safety features fitted as standard include EyeSight, Subaru’s advanced driver assist technology. Prices have yet to be confirmed.

www.ffb-online.co.uk The spectacular scenery of Royal Portrush Golf Course
OPEN SEASON
NORTHERN IRELAND REMAINS LARGELY UNDISCOVERED FOR HOLIDAY GOLFERS – BUT THAT’S ALL ABOUT TO CHANGE, WRITES JOHN MURPHY. olf clubs all over the world have something in common when it comes to parking arrangements. It’s not surprising nor illogical: officials of the club, whether they be board members, captains or presidents have allocated parking bays in the club car park. Normally small plaques in the club’s livery reserve the parking space with the words: “Secretary”, “Captain” clearly displayed.
G
In 2012 I had the pleasure and privilege to visit Royal Portrush Golf Club in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. As our car turned into the car park we saw the various reserved bays. At the end, near the clubhouse there was one highly unusual and remarkably different reserved space: the plaque merely stated: “Open Champion.” Remember, Royal Portrush is the home to one of Northern Ireland’s heroes: the genial Darren Clarke, former Ryder Cup Captain, and this was the year after he had conquered the elements at Royal St. George’s to claim the Claret Jug. The plaque said a lot about the club, its membership and the people we met in the province. Classy, understated but

possessing of a fierce pride in what their sons and daughters have achieved on the world stage.
Norther Ireland’s golfing champions
In fact Northern Ireland has a wealth of riches in the golfing department: Darren Clarke, Rory Mcllory and Graeme McDowell bestride the game like the legendary giants who in folklore built the nearby Giants Causeway.
Dleindec / 123RF Stock Photo
Rory McIlroy
So how is it that the origins of these greats are concentrated in such a small area? The answer may be obvious: their golfing education was forged in this hotbed of golfing tradition and heritage where some of the world’s best courses are shoe-horned on to a rugged and breathtakingly beautiful peninsular. The elements take no prisoners in this part of the world and Darren Clarke’s victory in 2011 will always be remembered for his ability to play crunching long irons into a ferocious wind that was the hallmark of the Open that year. A skill no doubt honed at his home club and at the nearby links courses of Portstewart, Castlerock and Ballycastle. It’s no wonder that the “Welcome to Portrush” sign proclaims that it is the

GOLF
“Major Golf Capital of the World” – a wonderfully Irish play on words as the sign lists its two Open winners (Fred Daly 1947 and Darren Clarke) and its US Open winner Graeme McDowell (2010). This part of the world is now very much in the golfing focus with Portstewart having staged the Irish Open this year, won by the Spaniard Jon Rahm, and the Open coming to Royal Portrush in 2019. The decision to choose Portrush was highly significant, the club being the only one outside England and Scotland selected to host the famous event, and it last did so nearly 70 years ago in 1951. I was lucky enough to be able to return to Portrush earlier this year as part of a visit by journalists to assess progress towards the Open in two years’ time. The Open Champion plaque may have gone but the glorious scenery and majesty of Portrush were still gleaming in the watery sun. A vast expanse of green beyond and around the clubhouse awaits the visitor, not dissimilar to the initial view of St Andrews. A concrete starting hut frames the first tee and in the stillness of an early Irish morning it’s difficult to imagine the cacophony that will greet the world’s finest stroke-makers in two years’ time.

brambles and weeds. My crowd, with the exception of our one-handicapper maestro, were tempted until raw fear on top of the gusty tee gripped us and intimidated us into yellow-livered shots.
Portstewart beach
The Giant’s Causeway – a popular spot for visitors to Northern Ireland
The course is hailed by many (including this humble hacker) as the best they have played on. Every hole is memorable and the scenery simply stunning. It would be a pleasure to just walk the course without touching a club. The views across thundering seas and sheer cliffs are mesmerising. The Championship Dunluce Course, originally designed by the same Harry Colt responsible for the Hallamshire course in Sheffield, is undergoing major changes in advance of the Open, most notably the moving of two holes from the Valley Course to make new seventh and eighth holes and the removal of existing holes 17 and 18. An underground tunnel is also being built to manage player and spectator traffic around the course. Despite the ongoing course work, our round was as enjoyable as the one five years ago. The hole that lingers longest in the memory is the fifth, White Rocks, with its green perched on the edge of cliffs with a sheer drop to the beach below. Long hitters can take on driving the green on this dog-leg downhill par 4, despite being just over 400 yards long, by angling a shot right of the fairway, between a menacing sand dune and a ravine of

The sense of intimidation merely increases when you’re on the next tee. An uphill par 3 of 191 yards off the Championship tees, with a ravine cutting in from the right and normally into the wind. The driver’s ball flight and length resembled a nine iron’s. It’s no wonder that they’re making absolutely no changes to this monstrous hole for the Open. Just down the round from Portrush is the impressive Portstewart club, comprising the Strand and the Riverside Courses. The Strand has all the traits of a true Irish links with mounded fairways set tight into the dunes and lightning fast, undulating greens framed by that stunning scenery of grass, sea and sky. Ironically and with no diminishing of the rest of the course, the first hole is the stand-out one. Widely acknowledged as the finest opening hole in Ireland, perhaps Europe, you are challenged to drive from an elevated tee down between two dunes that frame a narrow fairway which sweeps away to a dune-protected green on the right. In my experience golfers rarely consider Northern Ireland as a destination. These two courses plus other notable ones, such as Ballyliffin, just over the border in Donegal prove what a mistake that is. Try and play them before they become even more well known in two years’ time, when just maybe a sprinkling of Irish magic will mean a car park space being reserved once again for one of the Province’s famous sons.

HANNAH SANDERS FINDS OUT WHY. t has long been the case that national wage levels have been above what many people are earning in Sheffield. However, the good news for wage earners across the Sheffield City Region is that this gap appears to be shrinking.

According to State of Sheffield 2017, a report published by Sheffield City Council, the average salary in the city is £26,834 – below the national average of £28,213 and the third lowest in the ten Core Cities, the advocacy group whose other members include Birmingham, Bristol, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle, Nottingham, Cardiff and Glasgow. According to the report’s authors millennials make up 29 per cent of the population and are sought-after employees. Sheffield’s high proportion of millennials is driven largely by the two universities.

Over the last three years the growth rate of this generation has increased by three per cent, which matches the Core City growth and exceeds the rate for the UK. But the percentage of people in the city with no qualifications is 6.8 per cent, compared to the national average of 5.5 per cent. This has fallen over the last decade and but upskilling the city’s workforce is still a key challenge. The Skills Made Easy programme

completed a pilot phase in the Sheffield City Region in 2016. The aim of this is to work with businesses to improve skill levels of employees in two and a half years. It is now working to provide the vital employer engagement and brokerage service needed to support the region’s Skills Bank, planning to secure over 3000 workforce upskilling opportunities by April 2018.
level of job growth over the past year include professional services such as finance, digital, IT and advanced manufacturing. The drop in unemployment in the city could be linked to the quality of jobs improving, as more workers gain secure full-time employment. Sheffield, is continuously developing due to the developments of The Light, Chinese Quarter and The Moor, which are creating hundreds of new employment opportunities.
“It is pleasing that unemployment is continuing to fall, nearly halving since the end of the recession. It is vital that we continue to look behind the numbers at the quality of jobs, not just the quantity and create a stronger economy, so that those remaining unemployed have the opportunity to get a good job,” said Councillor Mazher Iqbal, Sheffield City Council’s cabinet member for business and investment. Across England, the Government recently announced up to £35 million of funding with Devolution Authorities for six new innovation employment pilots which will help over 18,000 disadvantaged people into employment and tackle long-term barriers to work and in-work progression. The Leader of Rotherham Borough Council, Councillor Chris Read, who is also Chair of the Sheffield City Region Skills, Employment and Education Board said: “This pilot, which will help underpin the inclusive approach of the Sheffield City Region. We are in the vanguard of this work. As we see the numbers of our high value jobs growing we are ensuring that no-one in our communities misses out on this growth.” According to the Office of National Statistics, UK unemployment has fallen from 4.9 per cent to 4.4 per cent, which is the lowest level since 1975.
“The major investments that Sheffield has attracted are important - the high profile businesses bring good quality, well-paid jobs, which offer training and opportunities to progress within work. We know that first-rate work helps to create independent, resilient and healthy people and strengthen our communities,” adds Councillor Iqbal.
‘There is a real sense of optimism and momentum in the city, with the retail quarter on site, recent investment success like Boeing and McLaren along with Sheffield’s growing reputation as the outdoor city.’ COUNCILLOR MAZHER IQBAL
The city also has more than 15,000 private sector businesses, along with more than 30,000 people in self-employment, who make a major contribution to the local economy. For Sheffield City Council, ensuring that Sheffield is a place where small businesses can develop and grow is essential, which is why it invests in its Business Support service which supports more than 1,000 people a year who are looking to start new ventures and over 200 existing companies looking to expand. “There is a real sense of optimism and momentum in the city, with the retail quarter on site, recent investment success like Boeing and McLaren along with Sheffield’s growing reputation as the outdoor city,” said Mazher Iqbal.
Employment Minister Damian Hinds said: “More than three million people are in work now than in 2010, with seven in ten of these roles being in higher skilled work. Over the past year the rise in employment has been overwhelmingly driven by permanent and full-time jobs, as employers continue to invest in Britain’s strong economy.” According to Sheffield City Council, Sheffield’s economy grew by 2.3 per cent over the past year stated in their latest official data. After a slight fall in 2016, employment has grown in the first quarter of 2017 with over 263,000 Sheffield residents in work. The sectors which have seen the highest

As part of a turnaround plan and drive towards operational efficiency improvements, Sheffield Forgemasters has completed a £2million investment into its arc furnace melting facility to enable it to make refined steel with less energy. Management voted to strip out almost 80 per cent of the primary electric arc furnace and replace it with upgraded equipment to achieve 15 per cent improvement. The upgrade has taken seven months from the initial design stage, including a seven-week production outage for the decommissioning, installation and commissioning of the facility. Gareth Barker, operations director at Sheffield Forgemasters International Ltd, said: “The investment and subsequent project to overhaul and upgrade the primary electric arc furnace is one of the largest infrastructure projects we’ve undertaken at the Brightside Lane site for a number of years.

UNIVERSITY OF SHEFFIELD DEVELOPS SOLAR FORECAST SYSTEM The University of Sheffield’s physics department has developed a new solar forecasting tool which could help increase efficiency and reduce energy costs.
REGENERATION SCHEME MOVES A STEP FORWARD The multi-million pound project at the junctions of Moore Street, Fitzwilliam Street and Thomas Street off The Moor has moved a significant step closer to reality with the signing of a deal between developers and a student accommodation provider. Progress on the 12-storey scheme follows the exchange of contracts between developers Litton Buccleuch (Moore Street) Ltd and a leading student accommodation provider.
Sheffield Solar has created a service which provides forecasts for energy generation from photovoltaic systems in the UK for up to 72 hours ahead. Sheffield Solar has been working with National Grid for more than two years to develop a tool which estimates the real time generation from solar systems. The system is intended for electricity grid operators as well as energy generators and traders and gives them the ability to monitor its energy sources, to balance renewable sources with other generating technologies, energy storage and interconnectors, as we move towards a smart grid. The service is currently being trialled on the University of Sheffield’s Sheffield Solar website and the group has plans to develop the service with researchers.
The development is based around four connected blocks providing flats with retail and cafes on the ground floors. Detailed planning consultation meetings have been held with Sheffield City Council and an application will be ready to be submitted soon. Subject to planning approval, construction is anticipated to start in May 2018, taking about 24 months to complete in time for the new student intake in autumn 2020. Mark Twelves of Litton Buccleuch said: “The city council, its planners and both universities are in broad support of the scheme that will complement Sheffield council’s progressive regeneration proposals for the city centre and provide the universities with a further selling platform in a very competitive market.”
KITCHEN SPECIALISTS EXPAND INTO SHEFFIELD Chesterfield-based independent kitchen design and installation company, Kitchen Craft Design is expanding into Sheffield. The company currently operates a 4,000 sq. ft. showroom and 3,000 sq. ft. warehouse in Chesterfield and has taken new premises on the site of the former Aga Shop on Ecclesall Road. Managing director Will Toon said: “This is an exciting move for the company. We have spent the last five years expanding and it was time to target the Sheffield market for customers wanting high-end design and installation. “The opportunity to locate onto the popular Ecclesall Road area, which has both heavy footfall and traffic, was ideal, and we are looking forward to officially opening in October with a big launch party.”
THE SHEFFIELD COLLEGE APPOINTS NEW FINANCE DIRECTOR Kate Platt has strong connections to the city, with previous roles including head of financial services at Sheffield Hallam University and South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive. Prior to that, Kate was assistant director of financial services and operations at Sheffield Hallam University and financial controller of Sheffield International Venues. Kate’s expertise from related sectors, combined with her knowledge of Sheffield, will help move us forward and build on our status as the largest provider of vocational education in the region. She will be leading an investment strategy that will improve our learners’ experience and at the same time deliver sustainable growth.”

LORD MAYOR JOINS SHEFFIELD FOYER TO CELEBRATE ANNIVERSARY Sheffield Foyer marked its 20th anniversary in style with a garden party attended by staff, residents, neighbours and the Lord Mayor, Councillor Anne Murphy. Foyer manager Samantha Mobbs presented five residents (past and current) with a ‘star award’, to recognise their achievements and determination, and the Lord Mayor concluded the ceremony, expressing her gratitude to all those in attendance, and raising a toast to celebrate the occasion. The Sheffield Foyer’s next steps include developing therapeutic services and new ways of working. Johnson, who takes over from retiring chair Steve Hustler, has worked within social care environments for a number of years, managing local authority children’s services at a senior level. In 2007 he joined Sheffield Hallam University, working within the centre for leadership in health and social care, leading the MSc health and social care leadership programme and developing a number of consultancy projects. In July 2015 he joined the department of social work, social care and community studies and as an academic delivery manager, was responsible for the academic delivery of the range of programmes the department offers. SHEFFIELD CITY REGION GROWTH HUB SURPASSES TARGETS
Aerospace giant Boeing’s plans to develop a multimillion-pound manufacturing and research facility – to be named Boeing Sheffield – in the Sheffield City Region have been approved.
The Growth Hub team at Sheffield City Region has worked with more than 4,000 businesses in its first year, surpassing its own target of 500.
Boeing will use the Sheffield Business Park site to manufacture high-tech components for its next-generation 737, 737 MAX and 777 aircraft. The systems would then be used on the trailing edge of wings of these models.
The bulk of inquiries over the year have been about help to grow businesses and finance, while help with skills training, starting a new business, and innovation were equally in demand.
The move will create at least 30 new jobs and provide the Sheffield City Region’s businesses with significant new supply chain opportunities.
David Grimes, head of the Growth Hub, said: "This is a very pleasing set of figures.
Sir Nigel Knowles, chairman of the Sheffield City Region (SCR) Local Enterprise Partnership, said: “This multi-million-pound investment is fantastic news and further endorses the region’s credentials as a global centre for innovation-inspired advanced manufacturing.
"The Growth Hub and its partners have been working extremely hard to help create growth and jobs across the region, and I am delighted that so many people have taken advantage of our services.
“A lot of people across the region have worked in partnership to help bring this investment about and it will play to the strengths of our supply chain and skilled workforce.”
"This demonstrates that there is a huge appetite for businesses to grow and create jobs and prosperity across the region.”
