EDUCATION

The Westbourne way WITH INDIVIDUALISED LEARNING, ALL WESTBOURNE SCHOOL PUPILS TAKE CENTRE STAGE. ed by headmaster Mr John Hicks, Westbourne is the only coeducational independent school in Sheffield offering first class education to girls and boys from the age of three to 16. It focuses on individualised learning, offering every child the opportunity to excel and to be the best that they can be. In addition, it offers a bespoke academic scholarship class which delivers some of the best teaching, learning and results for the brightest of girls and boys.

L

GCSE results this year were 97 per cent with five or more A*-C (90 per cent including English and Maths), 74 per cent of all Year 11 exams were A**, A*, A or B grades, 74 per cent of the ‘scholarship class’ exams were A**, A* or A grades.

It’s all about sharing excellence. Every year Westbourne offers a scholarship to all Year 6 children in the area for entry into their senior school (Year 7) in the September of the same

year. Scholarships – reduced fee places – are offered in five categories: Academic, Music, Sport, All-Rounder and the new category of Drama and Performing Arts. The next scholarship examination day will take place on 22 January. While great pride is taken in the academic achievements of its pupils, sporting excellence and creativity in music, theatre and art are always encouraged. Music plays an important part of life at Westbourne with everything from classical collaborations with world class professional musicians to bands formed by school pupils taking over the stage of the iconic Leadmill music venue in Sheffield for special gig nights. The next appearance at The Leadmill will be on 16 October. Meanwhile talented pupils of all ages make full use of Westbourne’s state-of-the-art drama studio, which opened in 2015 allowing pupils to experience their drama lessons in true theatre style. Recent productions to earn huge acclaim include Bugsy Malone, staged earlier this year at the Montgomery Theatre with a cast of 50 senior and junior pupils, and a swashbuckling nautical romp called Pirates Versus Mermaids by children from reception class to Year 2. Extra-curricular trips encourage pupils to enjoy new experiences and the latest offerings include a language trip to Cantabria, a sports tour to Lanzarote, a trip to Africa and a ski trip to the USA in 2018. When it comes to sport, Westbourne is proud to be inclusive but still retains a competitive edge, and achieves this by offering

not just A team but B and C team fixtures. This way everyone has the opportunity to represent their school at sport. One of the recent additions to the sporting curriculum is Lacrosse Club, one of over 50 different clubs and activities on offer at lunchtime and after school at Westbourne. This was introduced by teacher Mr Glover, who was one of the coaches when England’s men won the gold medal in last summer’s Lacrosse European Championship. Meanwhile at the younger end of the age range places in Westbourne’s Reception Class are in great demand since the opening of its new Pre-School for three to four year olds. Open 42 weeks a year between 7.45am and 5.45pm, it offers indoor and outdoor classrooms, a purpose-built play area, French, Music and P.E. taught by specialists, excellent facilities and free childcare places. ART

Took a chance

FRAMER BEV COUKHAM’S QUIRK OF FATE HAS LED TO A BLOOMING LOCAL BUSINESS.

ev Coukham, owner of Curo Gallery in Hillsborough, Sheffield, is pretty sure she now believes in fate. After a 30-year career working in the public sector, Bev was ready for a change of direction and sought the advice of a career coach. One suggestion was for her to imagine she’d won the lottery…not enough to retire…! But she could choose a new career based on what made her happiest. For Bev this was an easy decision and she was straight onto Google and with her first search found a local framing and gallery business that was for sale. Bev explains: “It seemed like too much of a coincidence to ignore. I’d always had a passion for art; my grandfather was an artist and it’s been a lifelong interest. And just when I was looking for something new in my life, here was a gallery down the road that was for sale… there was no looking back!” This was over two years ago and after a

B

period spent learning the basics of the trade under the watchful eye of the lovely previous owners who were retiring, Bev was ready to go it alone and shape the Curo Gallery in her own image. “From the start, I was clear that we shouldn’t just be framing pictures,” says Bev. “There’s so much that can look great on a wall. We love a challenge and like many

bespoke framers, we like to think we can frame almost anything.” Bev’s willingness to frame less traditional items has led to a portfolio of work that ranges from the relatively simple, shirts – cricket balls, footballs and rugby caps – through to more outlandish items such as horseshoes, handcuffs (she didn’t ask) and even a sword. “One that made me laugh a lot was a single frame filled with 28 ties that a class bought for their teacher at the end of year,” remembers Bev. “The thing was that they didn’t use school ties as you might think; they’d made the effort to find 28 of the worst coloured ties you could imagine including a rather rude one! It was hilarious.” She’s also had success with what she calls ‘memory boxes’: box frames containing not just flowers but items of significance from peoples’ lives. “I’ve framed ultrasound scans, hospital tags from newborn babies, casts of

hands and feet,” adds Bev. Bev’s willingness to frame less traditional items led to her developing what has come to be one of the Curo Gallery’s increasingly successful services: the preservation and presentation of flowers, creating beautiful pieces that are proving very popular. “Preserving moments from all aspects of family history with flowers is a wonderful thing to do and brings a whole new lasting meaning to ‘say it with flowers’,” says Bev. After a lot of careful experimentation Bev arrived at a method with which she was satisfied with and is always introducing new ideas. Curo now has a string of delighted customers and a healthy order book. It became clear that one of the main customers for her flower framing services was going to be brides looking to preserve their wedding bouquets for posterity. “I spend time with the brides when their flowers are preserved,” explains Bev. “I invite them to the shop, we lay out the flowers and I show them how they’d look with a range of different mountboards and moulding and framing styles. Some brides arrive with definite ideas but some are open to suggestions and I’ve catered for all tastes from very traditional, shabby chic and some ideas I would never have thought of that have become very popular.” In recent months Bev has begun to be a little more focussed in her approach to the bridal market. “I’ve started marketing to brides in advance of their weddings,” says Bev. “Previously, framing the flowers was an afterthought but now many of my brides are planning in advance and booking in the diary. This of course means that I can begin the

whole process much sooner which is good news when you’re working with perishable materials like flowers.” As an avid user of Pinterest and Twitter, Bev is certain that time invested in the digital side of the business is very worthwhile. “We’re a visual business so it makes sense to use our website and Pinterest to show off what we can do,” says Bev. “And Facebook is great for connecting to customers, letting them know what’s currently for sale and sharing positive feedback about our work.” However, regardless of more modern mediums, for Bev the most important marketing tool for the Curo Gallery is good old-fashioned word of mouth. “Recommendations are everything,” says Bev. “They are the number one priority and it’s thanks to people talking well of what we do that the business continues to grow from the wonderful base we inherited. And that’s good news because I absolutely love what I do and as my husband Des, who usually works his magic in the background in his spare time, ‘retires’ in September he will be spending more time doing what he loves doing.” When you look at Bev’s framed flowers, you’d be forgiven for thinking that her success has a lot more to do with her talent and expert eye rather than any intervention by fate. However, what’s certain is that the Curo Gallery provides an example of how some imaginative thinking can help an independent framing business to thrive. “Thank you Curo Gallery Framing & Flower Preservation for the gorgeous addition to our home and for creating an everlasting memory from our wedding day! My bouquet was created by my auntie with flowers from my godfather’s garden. So happy we get to look at this beautiful arrangement everyday. Thanks Bev for your masterpiece xxx.” – Emma Barnett

HOME LIFE

Stone love YOU’LL FIND HIGH-QUALITY PRODUCTS AT COMPETITIVE PRICES AT PARAMOUNT STONE SPECIALISTS. hopping, wiping, dining… kitchen worktops go through a lot in their lifetime so it is important you choose one that can stand the test of time. That’s why strong and durable granite and quartz worktops are such a popular choice at Paramount Stone Specialists. Kitchen showrooms usually contact fabricators for solid granite and quartz, but because Paramount are fabricators themselves, they deal directly with their customers to create bespoke surfaces for kitchen island tables and fitted worktops. And because they cut out the middle man, you get high-quality products at competitive prices. They also supply to trade customers, who can get even further reductions on their retail prices. Paramount first opened as a marble fireplace specialist 20 years ago in Goole. After ten years of building up a strong reputation in the area and supplying fireplaces nationwide, they expanded into supplying and fitting worktops, opening a second showroom and fabrication site in Hull. The business has been going from strength to strength ever since and their new Sheffield showroom opened on Chesterfield Road this April. Paul Giles has been in the industry for 14 years. Having started his career with Paramount as a machinist, manufacturer and installer before working his way up from sales to company manager, Paul has fast become an expert in their stone products. Sheffield’s own natural granite and marble supplier, International Stones, work closely with Paramount and you can even pick your own slab at their warehouse in Hillsborough.

When it comes to quartz, they don’t get much better than American-based supplier, Cambria Quartz Stone Surfaces, which come in a range of gorgeous colours and designs. See the Chesterfield showroom’s fitted settings or take away some samples to try at home. Paramount have had their fair share of accolades. One of the biggest kitchen manufacturers in Europe recently expressed interest in working with the company because of their choice and service, while they have also been named a Which? Trusted Trader. See the Which? website to find a number of positive reviews. Meanwhile, Silestone, the leader in quartz surfaces for kitchen and bathrooms have awarded Paramount with the title of Gold VIP Fabricator. As well as recognising them as one of the best fabricators around, this also means Paramount can offer a range of materials, at prices that cannot be found anywhere else. “Simply replacing your worktop can completely transform a kitchen,” says Paul. “Quality of products and services are our two main aims. Choose a colour scheme and we

will find you the right worktop at the right budget. “Most of our recommendations come from word of mouth and our outstanding reputation. Our customers and the surfaces themselves are for life. Ten years on, we are still professionally polishing our customers’ quartz worktops.” Speed and precision are also associated with the business, which uses laser templates and state-of-the-art CNC machines and water jet technology to intricately cut bespoke shapes to be perfectly fitted in your kitchen. What’s more, they even supply and install taps and sinks to match your new look. So whether you are looking for sharp or smooth edges, classic or contemporary, Paramount have a surface style and service to suit you. TESTIMONIAL

NEW WORKTOPS CAN TRANSFORM A KITCHEN – JUST ASK THIS HAPPY PARAMOUNT CUSTOMER. hen you move into a new home, the previous owner’s taste in interiors can be very different from your own. After a few years living in her family home in Ecclesall, Sue decided it was time to change the brown worktops in her kitchen. “I’d looked around and then I saw an advert for Paramount,” says Sue. “I was impressed by the quality of the products in their showroom and the prices were competitive. “The service provided by the company was excellent throughout – I asked lots of questions and the staff were always so knowledgeable and patient in answering them and I valued their expert advice. I liked that there was no pressure to buy and I went away with samples to colour match at home.” Sue was very happy with the quality and colours of the black quartz by Cambria Quartz Stone Surfaces with its galaxy of

W

purple, cream and sprinkles of glittering gold. It went with the blue colour scheme she had in mind and it certainly had the “wow-factor.” After deciding on the Cambria design, Paramount came to her home to measure up and returned to fit the worktops a week later. “I chose quartz for its durability and ease of care. The mix of colours in the quartz and the gold sparkle creates a stunning effect, especially when the sun is shining on it. My friends and family have given me a lot of positive comments about the new worktops.” As well as having new fitted surfaces, Sue also chose to have an island, providing a stunning centrepiece for her kitchen and a great place for socialising. She also chose new taps and sinks to match her new surfaces – also supplied and fitted by Paramount. She went with the cream Blanco sink, which comes as two deep trough-style sinks. Along with a natural-looking sand grain

effect, not only do they make the perfect match, Sue praises them for being “practical and functional.” It can be a stressful time when the builders are in, but once Sue had chosen her worktops, Paul and the team at Paramount took care of her project from start to finish. What’s more, she and her family are delighted with the results. “I have no hesitation recommending the product or the company to other people,” she concludes. “The quality of the worktop is excellent and the service and advice from Paramount was so professional. I definitely made the right choice.” Find this and more of Cambria Quartz Stone Surfaces’ gorgeous range of worktops, as well as many more high quality brands of granite and quartz at the new Paramount Stone Specialist showroom on Chesterfield Road, Sheffield.

ROOFING

Homing in on rooftop repairs FROM ROUTINE REPAIRS TO TO FULL ROOF REPLACEMENTS AND LOFT CONVERSIONS, MARTIN-BROOKS CAN HELP.

here’s a cracking view of Sheffield from the top of a terrace in Greystones, but I guess it’s not exactly what we’re there to look at.” Enjoying this unique vista is just one of the perks of Andrew Wheadon’s job. The estimator at local roofing specialists, MartinBrooks, is the first point of contact for homeowners who find themselves with a telltale leak or suspicious looking slate. “The main reason for roof damage is age. Inclement weather might bring the issue to a head, but nail fixings and mortar deteriorate over time and of course, problems can be exacerbated by poor installation,” says Andrew. Martin-Brooks carries out all types of roofing work on homes across the region and the Darnall-based firm is seeing enquiries about domestic repairs grow rapidly. In fact, they are up 11 per cent on last year and typically comprise small jobs that can be completed in hours. The top five most common roof problems afflicting our homes are: 1 Slipped slates or tiles 2 Blocked gutters 3 Leaks around chimney stacks 4 Mortar deteriorating under ridge tiles 5 Storm damage “With the exception of chimneys and ridges, which normally require scaffolding, most basic repairs can be undertaken safely from a ladder, keeping costs to a minimum. We have good stocks of materials, so there’s no delay in re-fixing or replacing slipped slates and the size of our team means we can address problems promptly, limiting the damage caused by leaks.” Recent jobs include an urgent slate repair in Woodseats and replacing ridge tiles in Wincobank. The view of Sheffield Andrew was enjoying in Greystones was from a loft conversion on a terraced house. Martin-Brooks re-roofed the property in natural Spanish slate, constructing dormer

T

windows and fitting steel beams and roof timbers, in accordance with the structural engineer’s design and building regulations. The owner is now enjoying his rooftop panorama from a beautiful new bedroom. Another full re-roof has just taken place on a larger property in Millhouses. Old concrete tiles were removed, allowing high performance insulation to be installed, followed by Sandtoft Calderdale tiles, a cost-effective equivalent of the former covering. This project was completed under the Competent Roofer scheme, enabling MartinBrooks to self-certify work that needs building regulation approval. A certificate of compliance is issued, without the need for a council inspection, saving the homeowner money and a significant amount of time. “We want clients to feel reassured that we are professional and our work is of the highest quality. We’re visiting your home and we respect that,” adds Andrew. Amazing job from start to finish. Lee was really helpful in his shop and helped me decide the best carpets for the rooms I was having done. He came quickly to measure up and within days he was fitting my carpets. I had five rooms and the stairs. He did a fantastic neat job and took care with every room. Superb value and service, would definitely recommend.”

DECORATING

Service guaranteed YOU CAN BE SURE THAT CARRACKS WALLPAPER & PAINT WILL HELP YOU TO FIND THE RIGHT PRODUCTS AT THE RIGHT PRICE – WHATEVER YOU ARE LOOKING FOR. ver the years, many businesses have come and gone in Crookes, but Carracks Wallpaper & Paint on the corner of Northfield Road is one store that has stood the test of time. The store will be a familiar sight to locals, having been firmly established in the same spot since 1947. The business was opened by musical legend Paul Carrack’s parents, Ben and Joan, before eventually being taken over by his older brother, John. Current owner Simon Bradbury worked with John for 15 years and bought the business from him last year. As a decorator who has worked in the industry for nearly 30 years, Simon has a wealth of knowledge to supply paints, wallpapers, brushes and other accessories, such as fillers and pastes, to both trade customers and the general public.

O

26 www.rmcmedia.co.uk

“Most people just come in for some good solid advice,” says Simon. “People come to us because we provide the right products and a personal service. We can get hold of most brands and they are discounted, so we are also cheaper than a lot of other paint and wallpaper stores.” Their top-quality paint brands include Dulux, Heritage, Johnstone’s and popular chalk paint Rust-oleum, whilst their brush and tool brands include Harris and Purdy. If you need a little inspiration, they have hundreds of wallpaper books for you to leaf through and even provide a colour matching service – just bring in the shade you want matching up and Carracks will do the rest. And though Carracks continues to give the same good old-fashioned, friendly service and wide range of paints and wallpapers it always has, Simon is bringing the business firmly into the 21st century. A new website is coming soon and will enable customers to buy products at the click of a mouse. Regular clients will also be pleased to hear that the store now accepts all major credit and debit cards. Simon has also recently taken on new member of staff, John Allot, who is also a painter and decorator, so they can continue to give customers dedicated one-on-one advice. It may look like a modestly-sized shop on the outside but, as two terrace houses put together, Carracks has many nooks and crannies full of paints and products to discover. Customers often refer to Carracks as an Aladdin’s cave. If you’ve never had a peek inside the store, Google ‘Carracks’ to have a 360-degree virtual tour today.

EATING OUT

Don’t hold back PHOEBE SEYMOUR DISCOVERS THAT, WHATEVER YOUR DIETARY REQUIREMENTS, THE GREEDY GREEK DELI CATERS FOR ALL – JUST BEWARE THE HUGE PORTIONS! ’d recently decided to go vegetarian and felt quite optimistic that I could resist meat. However, I panicked when I realised I was going to The Greedy Greek Deli. Images of juicy kebabs and sizzling souvlaki immediately came to mind. So imagine my relief when I sat down with the menu and found reams of delicioussounding starters, sides and mains with little green dots next to them. The Greedy Greek has been one of the culinary highlights of Sharrow Vale Road for the past 14 years. And every time I return, I’m convinced the portions and flavours are bigger and better. The décor however, has not changed and nor would we want it to. Apricot and blue walls echo the sea and sand of Mediterranean holidays, while aerial photos of Greek islands, ancient Grecian statues and traditional Greek music transport you. There may be simple tables covered in no-frills, paper tablecloths, but this doesn’t matter – the fabulous food is the star of the show. My partner started with the Greek chorizo sausage (£2.45) and a side of marinated Kalamata olives (£3.90) and I must admit, the smoky scent of the meat was heavenly.

I

28 www.rmcmedia.co.uk

However, my food envy faded as I tucked in to a flaky spanakotyropita (£5.10), filled to the brim with feta and spinach. Saving some of his olives for the main event, my partner had the lemon chicken (£10.30), which was served as large chunks of chicken and cooked onions on two skewers, alongside pieces of pitta, a creamy lemon yoghurt and a huge Greek salad filled with rocket, red peppers, onion, tomatoes, feta and green olives. I also had my hands full with the mixed halloumi and falafel wrap (£7.25), with its boulder-like falafel pieces and big cubes of lightly fried halloumi. Combined with crisp lettuce, juicy tomatoes and cucumber, olive hummus and moreish tzatziki in a thick pitta, this had to be one of the best wraps I’d ever had. We also had a side of zingy Greek lemon potatoes (£4.40) on our waiter’s recommendation, which did not fail to impress. Baclava (£4.40) is a must at any Greek restaurant, so I did not hesitate in ordering some for dessert with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Coming as four small parcels of filo pastry, full of warm chopped nuts and drenched in honey, there would have been

plenty to share, but my partner had his heart set on the Greek lemon cake (£4.40). As his spoon cut through the cake, made up of layers of soft pastry, the lemon sauce ran out. A sweet end to a satisfying meal. Eating out and ordering in can be difficult when you have dietary requirements, but places like The Greedy Greek Deli remind me that you don’t need to restrain your appetite. What’s more, many of their dishes can be made dairy free upon request. You can even bring your own bottle of wine to enjoy. FOOTWEAR

BUY A PAIR OF HANDMADE SHOES FROM CHARLES BROOKS AND THEY COULD LAST YOU FOR YEARS…

SOLE SURVIVORS! here’s no point stepping out onto the street in a sharp suit, only to finish it off with a cheap pair of shoes bulging at the sides and splitting at the seams. Very few items possess the same sartorial power that shoes do. Unlike, other accessories like cufflinks or a tie, a great pair completes an outfit, pulls the whole look together, and as such should take pride and place in every man’s wardrobe. And it’s shoes – handsome, comfortable and durable men’s shoes – that are the ‘sole’ of Charles Brooks’ business, if you’ll excuse the pun. An expert cobbler with over 50 years’ experience, Charles opened his first shop in 1972 after visiting his father at Darnall’s Coombes shoe repair factory as a youngster. A well-heeled gentleman himself, he understands that great shoes are worth investing in, so only the finest handmade footwear occupies the shelves of his Fulwood Road store. Loake, Barker and Tricker’s are among this

T

30 www.rmcmedia.co.uk

select group of specialist designers, all of which are committed to using traditional time-honoured English skills in their shoemaking. There are some 200 operations involved in the making of just one pair of Loake Goodyear-welted shoes, most of which are

carried out by highly-skilled craftsmen. Likewise, Barker, which produces over 200,000 pairs of hand-lasted sewn shoes annually, and Tricker’s shoes are carefully crafted by a team of master craftsmen to withstand years of wear. The shoes are handstitched and fitted with a special cork layer beneath the inner sole, which allows feet to breathe. A few decades ago, most of the shoes that men in this country bought were made in Northampton. But now only a few specialist shoemakers remain; the rest have gone abroad where production is cheaper. “Mass produced shoes are not made to last,” says Charles. “They are glued together, and the plastic soles are finished with only a thin layer of leather, consequently they start to fall apart within a few months of wear. “Invest in a properly made pair of shoes and look after them, they can last anything up to ten years. They get better the more you wear them; some of my customers have been wearing the same pair for decades.”

It is Charles’ meticulous eye for detail and passion for craftsmanship that has allowed him to cultivate a loyal clientele of customers. “We all call these shoes,” he says pointing to a beautiful, shiny pair of tan Tricker’s, “30year shoes; my customers are still bringing their first pair back three decades later to be repaired.” Charles and his expert team of cobblers offer shoe and leather repairs, shoe care products, key cutting, and have a range of wallets and briefcases for sale. They can also fix broken zips, and fit new watch batteries and watch straps. Located on Fulwood Road in the heart of Broomhill, Charles Brooks has been helping the ladies and gents of Sheffield put their best feet forward for over three decades.

Skin deep RIGOROUS TRAINING AND YEARS OF EXPERIENCE MEAN THAT SUE ROBINSON OF CLINICA AESTHETICS IS IDEALLY PLACED TO OFFER THE TREATMENTS THAT WILL HELP YOU LOOK YOUR BEST. ue Robinson is the owner of Clinica Aesthetics, a medical aesthetic clinic offering a range of injectables, peels and other non-surgical cosmetic procedures. Her aim is to make clients look and feel their best without major surgery, and one of the things she values most is the relationship she builds. Sue Robinson, who has 35-plus years’ experience as a registered nurse and midwife. Sue has always had an interest in aesthetics and after leaving the NHS, she gained a masters-level qualification in independent prescribing at Bradford University. During this time she gained invaluable experience working in London with her clinical mentor, Dr Aamer Khan, of the renowned Harley Street Skin Clinic. Sue is also a tutor in Medical Aesthetic procedures at a well respected training company

in Manchester. There she teaches medical professionals (doctors and nurses) to deliver injectable treatments to exacting standards. Her loyal clientele come to her for a free consultation discussion about their concerns and detailed skin analysis, in order to assess the best treatment option. As a nurse independent prescriber, Sue can write and order prescriptions – this is different to many other practitioners and nurses who require patients to visit a doctor/NIP. Initially Sue focused on the most popular treatments, however, by getting to know her patients and their concerns, and accessing as much training as possible, she keeps on top of medical developments and makes sure her treatments are at the cutting edge of medial aesthetic practice. “For anyone considering aesthetic treatments, my advice is to seek out a professional

registered nurse prescriber or doctor as we are listed on the registers of our mandatory regulatory bodies, which anyone can check out. It’s vital that you make sure the person treating you is experienced, to ensure your safety.” Clinica Aesthetics are delighted to introduce a cutting edge, non-surgical solution for heavy hooded eyelids, using the revolutionary Schuco Plasma device. The results are comparable to surgery, lasting just as long but with the following benefits: 8 + /1.#!.5 * *+ #!*!. ( * !/0$!0% 8 %/% (! .!/1(0/ ".+) 0$! 2!.5 "%./0 0.! 0)!*0 8 + / ..%*# * .! 1 ! +3*0%)! The device generates through a targeted micro-beam causing a process called sublimation with no effect on the surrounding tissue. During the procedure, the plasma causes some heating of the skin which may cause a burning or tingling sensation but patients should feel no pain given use of a local anaesthetic cream. The after-effect of a plasma treatment are limited to some immediate swelling of the treated area, and the formation of tiny dark spots which flake off after a few days. Three treatments as six weekly intervals re usually required to obtain surgical-standard results. For more information visit www.clinicaaesthetics.com or call Sue on 07771 604604.

As well as wrinkles and sagging eyelids, the device can also be used for intensive skin rebuilding, warts, stretch marks, fibroids and acne reduction - contact Sue to discuss your specific concerns on 07771 604604.

Physiotherapy can help you overcome the fears of lower back pain Our physiotherapist’s have extensive training and knowledge when it comes to treating low back pain, and regularly treat a wide range of back problems. We can offer interventions including joint mobilisations, manipulation, posture re-education, acupuncture and exercise. The Chartered Society of Physiotherapy have published guidance relating to the common myths associated with low back pain: Myth 1. Moving will make my back pain

worse

Quite the opposite is in fact true. It is essential to try and keep moving when you are feeling pain, so try not to fear twisting and bending. If you are in pain, then try gradually increasing how much you are doing, and stay on the go. Myth 2. I should

avoid exercise, especially weight training

Back pain shouldn’t stop you enjoying exercise or regular activities. Research has found that continuing exercise can help you get better sooner.

Newly refurbished and extended Pilates studio classes for all abili es

Myth 3. A

scan will show me exactly what is wrong

Sometimes it can, but most often it won’t. Also, even people without back pain have changes in their spine so scans can cause fear that influences behaviour, making the problem worse. Myth 4. Pain

equals damage

This is the common view, but more recent studies have changed our thinking. Modern physio takes a holistic approach that helps people understand why they are in pain. The problem is that commonly these myths create fear, which causes people to stop doing many of the activities they need to do to address the problem. The Physiotherapist’s at the White House clinic are experts in treating and preventing back pain.We can help you overcome those fears, and get you back to your normal activities sooner than you may first think. If you suffer from low back pain then why not visit us and see what we can do to help.

Another happy customer… When Simon and Rachel considered restoring their porch, they turned to the team at Window Spec and were over the moon with the results. “We had a canopy above the front door, which after water damage had to be taken down. After 18 months of nothing over the door we were ready to go for a conservatory style porch. After speaking with Andy from Window Spec, he told us we had another option – extend the front of the house with a 3m brick extension, creating more of an entrance that would look like part of the structure of the house. Needless to say we fell in love with the idea.” Simon and his wife went for the Rockdoor brand, which is the strongest door on the market. The brand is manufactured in accordance with Secured by Design, an accreditation fully back by the police. Their front doors don’t just look the part, they also provide unrivalled security and thermal efficiency with their Ultimate range of doors achieving an A++ energy rating. They also opted for A-rated uPVC windows, which are energy efficient and provide top security and installation. “Both Andy and John went above and beyond to help us, especially when they spent half a day removing a ceramic tile house number, which we wanted to replace with a more modern one. “Throughout the day they never stopped working, described exactly what they were doing at each stage and always left things

clean and tidy. Every part of the work was of an amazingly high quality. “Andy and John, despite certain methods being more expensive, never increased the initial price of the work as they just want to do the best job. They wanted the final product to look as good as it possibly could – it isn’t about the money, just about doing the work to the best possible standard. “We think Window Spec are a reliable, hard-working company, who pay incredible attention to detail. We are beyond happy with the exceptional work that has been carried out and would definitely recommend them.”
