PROMOTIONRIGHT FRAME

Right Frame is a one-stop shop for all your door, window and conservatory needs.

I

n the winter months, we tend to neglect our traditional conservatories as they become far too cold to sit in. Likewise, the last thing we’re thinking about is installing or throwing open our existing patio doors. But what if you could enjoy a cosy conservatory all year round? Right Frame in Beighton can add features to improve your existing conservatory or transform your home with a new high quality conservatory, built to last. Skypod and lantern skylights can be applied to flat roofs to keep in heat, whilst filling your room with gorgeous sunlight. Every project Right Frame undertakes is bespoke, so you can choose from a number of conservatory features, including Equinox Tiled Roofs and a variety of UPVC windows such as Velux. All of Right Frame’s windows, doors and conservatory parts are supplied by Eurocell, the UK’s leading distributor, and because they are all manufactured to a high standard by Right Frame, you can be sure you are getting the best parts for the job. Though Right Frame is a relatively new business, owner Robert Dawson has nearly 30 years of experience in trade and consultancy. After years of working for large companies, Robert

became sick and tired of using inferior materials, so decided to take control by setting up his own business, Job Well Done. In September 2015, Job Well Done joined forces with Robert’s new manufacturing business Right Frame, to provide everything from the design consultation, right up to completion. “We take pride in what we do,” says Robert. “There are no sales people and I’m happy to come out to talk over the designs with clients. Every quote is individual and there’s no pressure. “We promise an honest reliable and affordable price and to get it right first time, every time. We won’t leave until the job is completed to the highest standard.” Right Frame is a one-stop for both retail and trade customers, offering all the parts and products you need including silicon, hand tools, gutters and frames. Right Frame offers a ten-year guarantee on their A-standard plastics and glass, as well as a genuine like for like quote, so they won’t be beaten on price or quality. Come find out why Right Frame is a brand with an excellent reputation, built on recommendations by their Sheffield branch or by visiting www.rightframe.co.uk today. Y

ou will be pleased to hear the answer is yes, we are already seeing signs of the property market picking up as spring takes hold. Winter is usually a slow time as Christmas takes priority in household budgets and people spend the first couple of months in the new year paying off festive debts. But with the blue skies and lighter nights of spring comes a reinvigoration of the property market – and that is good news for both buyers and vendors. One of the most striking effects of the change in seasons is how a property looks in natural light. After-work viewings no longer see potential viewers stepping in to the back garden with a torch or having to just imagine the vendor’s description of how the lateafternoon light floods into the conservatory. Houses are literally seen in a different light in the spring and this can make a huge difference to someone’s opinion of a property. This positive perception may even encourage buyers to consider making a higher offer. Outside spaces really come into their own during the warmer months, and vendors can use this to their advantage when trying to sell. A carefully-positioned barbecue in a well-maintained garden can conjure up lovely summery images in a buyer’s mind. It’s about using all the tools available and really pushing the home’s plus-points. A few vases of fresh-cut flowers can also work wonders for a property’s appeal by bringing an extra touch of spring inside. So if you’re thinking of buying or selling this spring, take a fresh look at the market. I think you’ll be pleased with what you find.

If you have a question on any aspect of the property market, email stephanie.burns@regionalmagazine.co.uk and we will feature the answer in a future issue. Find us on To speak to the Haybrook Crystal Peaks team, call 0114 251 1710.

espite those pesky April showers, the sun is finally shining and the days are getting longer, so why not take inspiration from our varied climate with these weather-related accessories? Less is more, so focus on one dramatic sunshine-themed piece or simply add yellow and gold accessories – metallics are on trend this year, so you can certainly incorporate the two this season.

Or if you’d rather embrace your inner child, stick to bold colours and brighten up your home and garden with bursts of rainbow shades or fun cloud and raindrop motifs. So whether you are a dedicated follower of fashion or just want to add some playful accessories to a dull home, these items will certainly do the trick this spring.

PROMOTIONNEWFIELDS LEARNING AND RESOURCE CENTRE

Newfields is helping the disabled achieve independence and be the best that they can possibly be.

R

emember how proud you were the first time you cooked yourself a meal, or how independent you felt when you started your first job? As time goes by and these tasks become the norm, we start to take them for granted, but the skills we develop in early adulthood are important and stay with us for life. The team at Newfields Learning and Resource Centre in Eckington believes that people with disabilities should be offered the same chances to progress in life as those without. Mandy Billiard opened the centre in October 2011, after noticing a lack of support centres in the area. Mandy harnessed her years of experience in the supported and residential care industry and her knowledge of social enterprises to create a positive environment where adults with physical and mental disabilities can develop the skills they need to live more independent and enjoyable lives. It is now jointly managed by Julie Dean, a qualified nurse who has worked for the NHS and in the healthcare industry since 1978 and Jill Leeson, who has been a team leader and manager in the industry for over 20 years. The centre caters for all ages and all disabilities from 18-yearold school leavers, to adults in their 60s. Newfields recognises that every individual has their own strengths, weaknesses, hopes and goals, so progression can mean different things for different people. “Our job is to help each person explore every avenue open to them,” says Julie. “Above all, learning should be fun! The Disability Partnership keep us informed of what’s going on in Chesterfield and Sheffield so we can engage with the wider, external community too.” The centre concentrates on developing a number of everyday skills under one roof including health and safety, healthy eating, personal care, independent living and shopping, as well as more academic skills such as maths, English, computing, and creative skills such as arts and crafts, gardening, woodwork, sports and dance. Activity Sheffield has been associated with Newfields for the past two years and often invites professionals from Sheffield and Chesterfield to support health and wellbeing. This includes speech and language, physiotherapy and occupational therapy support. They also have good relationships with Chesterfield College, Talbot School and Sheffield Hallam University. The team is currently focussing on employment and is encouraging their visitors to take up work experience in the local community and have already successfully arranged cleaning placements at the Truly Scrumptious café in Eckington and Christ Church on Hollinsend Road in Gleadless. Other areas of work include gardening for various employers

IMAGEmagazine 22

and glass collecting work at local pubs. As well as giving them the confidence to go into the world of work, Julie, Jill and the team are keen to see their visitors relax, socialise and have fun with internal activities such as their Lotto-funded ball pool and spa, and external activities such as bowling and iceskating. None of these would be possible without the generosity of others and some brave members of staff at Newfield are currently preparing for a sky dive fundraiser. Newfields caters for all backgrounds and cultural diversity is an important aspect of their visitors’ educational experience. They enjoy learning about other cultures with the centre’s themed weeks (Italian week, Chinese week etc) and celebrate a number of different religious holidays. The best way to find out about what Newfields has to offer is to experience it for yourself. Attend their sponsor weeks from 25 to 29 April or from 24 to 28 October, or attend their open day on 27 October 2016. Call 01246 431465 or visit their website for more details. Progression for adults with a learning and/or physical disability People with a disability should be offered the chances to progress in their life in the same way as non disabled. IMAGEEATING OUT

Clucketeer Garreth Medlock with owner Simon Beattie

WORTH A CLUCK! Whether you eat in or drive through, the food is delicious, writes Fiona Barber.

A

s many unhappy travellers have discovered, finding a drivethrough restaurant that serves up delicious and nutritious food is about as rare as hen’s teeth. But now we have Cluck, offering family-friendly favourite chicken dishes plus a little bit extra. Located next to the Travel Lodge on Sheffield Parkway drivethrough, bar and restaurant opened on the former site of Little Chef last July, and owner Simon Beattie has transformed the derelict building into a welcoming, stylish space offering proper homecooked food at reasonable prices. On this occasion, we were eating in, and our server – Clucketeer Garreth Medlock – was friendly and helpful throughout. Our visit coincided with the launch of their new menu, which includes all of the old favourites including Cluck curry, chicken with bacon steak and cheese and rotisserie chicken, plus the addition of burgers, a pie of the day, Cajun chicken burrito, and ribs. I decided to try out the ribs, which came beautifully presented and – I was delighted to find – were especially meaty. As a born and bred Sheffielder, my companion couldn’t resist the Henderson’s wings, which are marinated in Cluck’s own special recipe. Five succulent wings came served with a fresh side salad and a barbeque dip, and were both succulent and deliciously crisp. With starters cleared, it was time for mains: a show-stopping burger and one of their most popular dishes, chicken with bacon steak and cheese. “I always love a meal where you get a sword with it,” my companion laughed, as Garreth presented him with a doublestacked chicken burger speared by a huge wooden-handled knife.

IMAGEmagazine 26

Accompanied by onions rings, coleslaw, relish and proper homemade chips, this was exactly the feast my companion had hoped for. All of Cluck’s mains come with an unlimited side dish – so don’t be afraid to ask for a top up – and, if you don’t fancy the recommended option, they are always happy to switch it for another. Being conscious of leaving enough room for dessert, I swapped a jacket potato for salad to complement my butterflied chicken with bacon and melted cheese, which proved to be a real hearty treat. Starters A ginger cheesecake and Henderson’s wings, £4 for five a warm chocolate cake with wings ice cream provided the Barbeque pork ribs £4.50 perfect ending to our afternoon indulgence and Mains we left blissfully satisfied. Eckington Boys and Belles Junior Football Club has been shortlisted in the Stoves Community Kitchens Campaign and is now in line to win thousands of pounds worth of cooking appliances. The £20,000 Community Kitchens fund rewards community projects by helping them to transform their kitchen facilities. The first wave of applications saw in excess of 200 nominations flood in from across the UK and Ireland and the local football club has now made the final ten. This registered charity is based in the centre of Eckington and currently oversees 21 teams over two soccer schools, collectively catering for over 200 children. The club provides a focus for young children who may be suffering from economic deprivation and antisocial behaviour through encouraging participation in sport. The charity would like to introduce a kitchen facility they believe will benefit both players and spectators, providing match day food and raising valuable funds for the club’s development. The provision of new Stoves equipment would help to contribute to the club’s long term sustainability. The public vote, conducted via the Stoves Facebook page, is open until 3 May. The projects that receive the most votes will then be awarded bronze, silver and gold prize packages, worth between £2,000 and £5,000.

IMAGELOCAL PRODUCE

THE BENEFITS OF BUYING LOCAL Quality over convenience seems to be the order of the day as many of us are shunning supermarkets in favour of local producers. Words: Frances Cawthorne

O

nce upon a time, everyone went to the supermarket to buy their groceries and never gave a thought towards local produce. No-one would be seen to be searching the labels of their fillet steak and pondering on the question ‘where did this actually come from?’ Yet, a growing consciousness towards the source of our food has led to the rise of farm shops, and a reappraisal of the importance of butchers and fishmongers in our communities. After all, let’s be honest, everyone would rather cook and eat food that has been grown and reared in farms that may well be in sight of your home, than a product that has travelled thousands of miles to get to you. It always feels special when restaurants strive to include local produce on their menus, as you are not only eating something that is fresh and healthy, but you also know that the plate of food in front of you is giving something back to the community. And of course, if it’s from Yorkshire, it’s bound to taste better. However, patriotism aside, there truly are benefits to the flavour of food when it comes from close to home. When vegetables are plucked from the best soil and picked from the vine at their peak ripeness, they are bursting full of nutrients and flavour; the delivery time from growing to selling is virtually nonexistent, and they are available to buy within days or even hours at your local shops. The only way to eat any fresher is by getting down and dirty and growing your own. As small local food businesses are not committed to mass production, this allows for

IMAGEmagazine 30

more quality control and perhaps even some variety in size and shape. Those lovingly grown tomatoes and onions may not be the right shape to comply with generic supermarket packaging but they will be truly delicious. We’re always being told to go ‘green’ and consider the environment in everything we do, and buying local is a perfect way to do your bit for the ozone layer. Not only does the reduction in delivery time lead to fewer carbon emissions, but the small scale growers and producers within our community also tend to be more environmentally friendly by rejecting the supermarket methods creating a greater quantity – rather than quality – of food. As small-scale producers do not need to grow food intensely, artificial fertilisers and chemicals can be kept to a minimum. It is reassuring to know that meat and dairy products have been produced from animal stocks which have been treated with the utmost respect for animal welfare. And everyone would prefer a cut of lamb that has been carefully hand-cut locally, as opposed to machine-cut in a factory far away. More and more people are looking to support the local economies within their community, and are willing to pay more for fresh high quality products in order to do so. From brilliant butchers to fabulous farm shops, there are plenty of local suppliers that provide fresh, high quality products right on your doorstep, how perfect is that? So treat your tastebuds as well as your local community and go local by purchasing food with a purpose.

PROMOTIONMOSBOROUGH HALL

With weddings, wining and dining and the best entertainment around, Mosborough’s premiere hotel destination really is THE place to be.

I

t has long been established as one of the area’s most popular wedding venues, dining destinations and places to treat yourself for a special night away from home. But Best Western Plus Mosborough Hall Hotel is also renowned for its great variety of events, which take place throughout the year. One of the most exciting events to grace their social calendar this year is the Hypnotic Show, which takes place on Friday 6 May. This action-packed show, which invites volunteers on to the stage, will have the audience in stitches with the exciting and fun effects of hypnosis. Hypnotist Steve Brolin has more than 20 years’ experience of entertaining audiences in the UK and abroad with his dynamic and progressive show. He tastefully guides his subjects through the amazing hidden potential of the subconscious mind and ensures that all volunteers have a positive experience at all times, continually making them feel like the stars of the show.

All volunteers are treated with respect and every show is really good clean fun. Tickets are £21.95 and include a two-course meal. Event manager Patricia Foster said: “We are delighted to be bringing back the Hypnotic Show. It has been over a decade since we have hosted these events and we are really looking forward to be bringing them back to the hotel. The evenings are fantastic fun and we can’t wait for Steve to entertain our guests.” Looking to the summer, the events schedule continues. On Wednesday 25 May from 7pm, Mosborough Hall are thrilled to be welcoming international medium, author and visionary

Joanne Gregory for an evening of clairvoyance. Joanne has gained a strong celebrity following thanks to her accuracy and regularly travels across the country to share her abilities at sell-out shows. Don’t miss your chance to see her in action for just £15. For those who like a good old boogie, the 80s and 90s night on Friday 1 July is the perfect opportunity to let your hair down and dance the night away. Tickets for the two-course meal and themed disco are just £17.95. If you prefer a more relaxing or romantic dinner setting, jazz night on the first Friday of every month in the atmospheric Darcy’s Brasserie will be right up your street – and even includes a complimentary glass of fizz. The fantastic Karen Lake Jazz trio features the soulful vocals of Karen singing easylistening favourites by the likes of Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday to a backdrop of piano and double bass. If you’re thinking of hosting your own event – be it a birthday party, a wedding, an anniversary or any other special occasion – Best Western Plus Mosborough Hall Hotel has some of the best facilities around. Star attraction: the sleepy sloth is just one of Costa Rica’s many fascinating animals Photograph: Marco Diaz Segura/www.shutterstock.com

Lizzie Murphy experiences the rich variety of life in the tropical paradise of Costa Rica.

NATURAL WONDERLAND F

lying through the forest canopy nearly 1500m above the ground, this felt like a challenge that would even make Bear Grylls think twice. Well, almost. The fact that I had been kitted out with a harness, a helmet and was accompanied by a team of safety-conscious guides may detract slightly from the True Survivor element of Costa Rica’s Ecoglide zipwire experience. In fact, it was the perfect introduction for two adrenaline rookies such as myself and my traveling companion, my dear old dad. Costa Rica is a land rich in experiences. A paradise for thrill-seekers and nature-lovers alike, the country attracts over 2.5million tourists annually. Almost half of these visitors are seeking to explore the expansive natural beauty of the country, which is estimated to contain 5 per cent of the world’s biodiversity. As both a biologist and lover of all things Attenborough, I leapt at the opportunity to discover this treasure trove of tropical life. I was certainly not disappointed by the gems we uncovered. Some of Costa Rica’s richest life is found on land, in the rainforests of the northern highlands. A varied selection of mammals live here, from the heavily armoured armadillo to the wide-eyed kinkajou.

IMAGEmagazine 38

The star of the show is without a doubt the sloth, the world’s slowest mammal. Sleeping for between 15-20 hours a day, this animal moves so slowly its fur provides the perfect habitat for moths, beetles and cockroaches. We were lucky enough to spot one of these weird yet wonderful creatures during a night walk in the cloud forest of Monteverde. Hanging from a thin, trailing vine a mere three feet above us, it swung itself delicately upwards in search of some evening grub. It was not just this mysterious mammal that our tour guide, Elbert, was keen for us to witness. Once we were fully equipped, torches in hand, he led us www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

along the seabed. Smaller, and thankfully less vicious, than Hollywood’s infamous Jaws, the white-tipped reef sharks paid us divers little attention. These were silent, graceful creatures, their sleek bodies moving in gentle curls with the current. Our breathing remained steady and slow, respectful of the fact that we were merely visitors to their aquatic kingdom. Eventually our air supplies indicated it was time for us to leave so we headed back to the surface, all limbs intact. A trip to Costa Rica wouldn’t be complete without a visit to one of its prime surf locations and the choice is vast. The northern Pacific coastline is a haven to backpackers and beach bums, all in search of the perfect wave. We chose to spend the final few days of our Central American adventure at Tamarindo Bay, one of the most famous surf resorts in the country. Being a complete novice to the sport, I spent an intense two hours inhaling seawater as I threw myself off the board in a frenzy of flailing limbs. Such an exhausting effort finally paid off and I finally managed to ride a wave, albeit on an over-sized foam beginners’ board. Costa Rica is so much more than a holiday destination; it’s a country of adrenaline and adventure. It’s the perfect place for those who are looking for something with a bit more bite than just sun, sea and sand… perhaps with the help of a shark or two.

through the forest in search of a variety of nocturnal critters. Elbert had his walkie-talkie at the ready, communicating with other nearby guides to ensure we saw the finest of what the forest had to offer under the veil of darkness. Elbert pointed through trees and branches to show us a side-striped palm viper, poised and ready for ambush. He shone his light into a small burrow between thick, knotted tree roots to show us a female orange-kneed tarantula. Leaves came alive, suddenly revealing themselves to be expertly camouflaged katydid crickets. He was so enthused to show us the forest at night our pace quickened until we were leaping over dead wood and hurling ourselves over fallen branches in true Indiana Jones-style, desperate not to miss out. Our explorations of Costa Rica’s natural wonders however, were not restricted to land. Never one to pass up the chance to dive beneath the waves, I spent one morning scuba diving off the north Pacific coast, around the Catalina Islands. On the boat ride to the islands a pod of dolphins joined us, breaking the water’s surface with their arching bodies. The diving itself uncovered moray eels with needle teeth, scorpion fish nestled into the sand and a shiny, silver trumpetfish, proudly hovering above the sand. The final dive of the morning was certainly one to be remembered. While moving through narrow channel between two rocks Photographs: Lizzie Murphy we came across three sharks drifting lazily www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

The brand new Volkswagen Tiguan could be at the show

C

ar-lovers rejoice! The Sheffield Motor Show is back for a third year running and, with at least eight local dealers showcasing cars from 27 different manufacturers, it is set to be the best yet. This year, the show takes place on 4 and 5 June and over 65 new cars will be displayed at The Peace Gardens, at the front of the Town Hall and on the boulevard on Pinstone Street. The show is a rare opportunity for local dealers to showcase cars in the city centre and, for anyone in search of a new car, it offers the chance to view all the newest models in one place. Dealers and manufacturers already on the list include Burrows with Toyota, Europa with Subaru, Robins and Day with Peugeot, Pentagon Group with Vauxhall and Jeep, JCT with Porsche, VW Commercial, VW, Audi, Fiat, and

Mercedes, Lookers with Ford, Bristol Street Motors with Volvo and Evans Halshaw with Renault – but organiser Roger Hart of Sheffield Vulcan Rotary Club says there is still room for another 15 cars. “We would love to fill the space. With The Peace Gardens there are fantastic photo opportunities for Last year’s event dealers to have their cars on show in Sheffield city centre with the Town Hall and the fountains. The council have even offered to allow us to colour the fountains, so they will be in blue to match our rotary colours.” The Lord Mayor will attend on the Saturday to present certificates to all of the dealers and, as well as the many cars on display, there will also be family entertainment including a stilt walker, balloon modelling and face painting for www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

little ones and the 200ft Star Flyer carousel on Fargate for any adrenaline junkies. Roger, who has always had a passion for cars says: “It’s not very often that you get an opportunity for rotary to show itself in such a big way. We are hoping this year that we shall have brand new models that might not have been seen before. One is likely to be a Ford and there is a chance we will get a brand new Volkswagen Tiguan at the show, but until that car arrives in Sheffield we won’t know.” Last year proved to be a huge success and funds raised from the show were divided between eight charities, including the rotary club’s own charity fund, which is used as a reserve to help people in need. Most recently, the club sent funds to a rotary club in Cumbria to help with the flooding crisis. They also help those in international disaster zones – including the Nepal earthquake – by buying and sending ShelterBoxes, which contain emergency aid such as tents and mosquito nets. The rest of last year’s money, £400, was donated to local Sheffield charities including Sheffield Helipad Appeal, Cavendish Cancer Care, and the Research and Medical Treatment Lounge at Sheffield Children’s Hospital.

“The rotary club has a speaker each week, so people come and give us a talk about their work and we consider if they are eligible for a fund or a donation,” Roger explains. “Sometimes we will give them £50, it might be £100, but if we see a specific thing for them or they can say: that £400 will come New models from Ford in really handy for something, we specifically apply it. The medical and research treatment lounge, for example, wanted some DVD players because they have children from two to 16 years old, and some can bring in their own iPads, but others can’t afford them, so they wanted some replacement DVDs.” This year, one of the chosen charities is Roundabout, which helps young people who have lost contact with home and are trying to find their way in life. Jordan Cutforth rounds up the latest from the world of motoring. VW on the Up! The introduction of the Up! back in 2011 made driving a small city car really rather enjoyable indeed. It was an exceptional car that deserved all the praise it could get. Now there’s a new Up! in the pipeline, and it looks to be even better than before. For starters it’s going to cost exactly the same as the old model, but with improved levels of tech and higher specs meaning it’ll be better value for money. More customisation options are available with seven trim levels to choose from. It’ll come with a brand-new 89hp 1.0-litre TSI unit which can achieve 64.2mpg, yet match performance figures which, VW says, are on a par with that achieved by the first ever Golf GTI.

Mid-life makeover The SL Roadster is an iconic car, and from April, there’s going to be a brand-new variant. A mid-life makeover shall we say. The looks have changed with elements of the 300 SL from the fifties being incorporated into the design. The inside has been upgraded to align with the rest of the range and includes new technology such as Apple CarPlay. Four models will be available: SL400 (3.0-litre V6), SL600 (4.7-litre V8), SL63 (5.5-litre V8) and SL65 (6.0-litre V12) with power ranging from 367hp (SL400) to 630hp (SL65). BMW goes into the red Ever fancied your BMW i8 in red? Well that was tough as the Bavarian car company didn’t give you the option. That is until now! It’s called the Protonic Red Edition and besides the exclusive Protonic Red paint finish, you also receive Frozen Grey metallic accents around the front kidney grills and side skirts, along with Orbit Grey metallic W-spoke light-alloy wheels. On the inside, there’s high class red double stitching, as well as carbon fibre and ceramic trims. There are no changes mechanically to the base model i8 meaning there’s 362hp from a battery assisted 1.5-litre threecylinder turbo engine, which produces 134.5mpg and a 062 time of 4.4 seconds. It costs £8,995 more than the standard i8 at £112,535. First deliveries expected in September.

Even more Italian style The Giulietta – Alfa Romeo’s family hatchback to rival the likes of the Ford Focus and VW Golf – has been a great addition to the family market, combining delicious Italian styling with family practicality and German-rivalling build quality. On 1 April, the brand-new version will go on sale, priced from £18,450, and there are a raft of new additions and changes. The styling has incorporated design elements from the upcoming Giulia with new alloy wheel designs making it even more desirable to the fashion conscious. Inside there are revised seat upholsteries, dashboard and door panel finishes with each model coming with a great list of standard equipment. Nine power units will be available with a new 120hp 1.6-litre diesel achieving 74.3mpg, 99g/km of CO2 and 0-62mph time of a 10.2 seconds.
