EDUCATION

Facing the future

UNSURE OF WHAT LIES AHEAD? WE LOOK AT THE EDUCATION OPTIONS AVAILABLE TO STUDENTS APPROACHING THEIR GCSE EXAMS AND BEYOND. t every stage of your child’s education, they come to a crossroads. Perhaps your child is about to decide which subjects to continue to study or is awaiting exam results, which will determine what they do next. However old they are, having as much information and sound advice as possible is vital when coming to a decision. If your child is in need of some guidance and you are unsure of how to help, here are some things for them to consider at each stage.

A

AGES 14-16

The main difference between GCSEs (General Certificate of Secondary Education) and BTECs (Business and Technology Education Council) is that BTECs are usually awarded for more vocational subjects such as P.E. (physical education), hair and beauty and children’s care. BTECs are usually taken by students aged 16 and above, but some schools offer BTECs alongside GCSEs. If your child is weighing up whether to choose a BTEC, it may be worth noting that they involve more coursework and less exams than GCSEs. So if your child

16 Image | www.imagemagazine.co.uk

hates exams, they may find a BTEC easier. One BTEC is equivalent to one GCSE, so don’t worry which will be considered more ‘valuable’ when it comes to the next stage of their education.

staying on to investigate those subjects for their A Levels. And if they don’t like the idea of going to the sixth form connected to their secondary school, now is a good time to start afresh.

AGES 16-18

AGES 18+

As mentioned above, your child can opt for BTECs at this stage in their education, or they can take academic-based A Levels or a work-based qualification such as an RQF (Regulated Qualifications Framework, formerly NVQs). A Levels can be taken at sixth form or college, whilst BTECs and RQFs are more commonly taught at college, so it is completely up to them which learning environment they prefer. Whilst your child may like the idea of going to the sixth form connected to their school, they should choose a route that will best benefit their career. If they know what career they want to pursue at this stage, a BTEC or RQF is a good option. However, if they are unsure about their career goals, but know they enjoy certain academic subjects, it’s worth them

At this stage, your child will probably be more certain about what direction they are going in. Some may know they want to go to university, but just need a year out to travel or get some work experience under their belt. However, others may feel university isn’t for them and there are a few options for them to consider when it comes to the world of work. From apprenticeships and careers to gap year opportunities, www.notgoingtouni.co.uk is a handy website to explore. If they need extra advice, www.prospects.ac.uk offers application and interview tips and tells you more about different industries. Perhaps there are areas of work they haven’t considered yet. Unpaid work placements can also provide a foot in the door, whilst internships are usually fixed term paid positions that can lead to permanent, long term work.

EDUCATION

Fear of the unknown LIZ THEAKER IS A YEAR 10 STUDENT. ABOUT TO GO INTO HER FINAL YEAR, SHE EXPLAINS WHY SHE IS FEELING APPREHENSIVE ABOUT THE CHANGES TO THE WAY GCSES ARE ASSESSED AND GRADED…

very school year is greeted with nerves and excitement about what lies ahead. However, going into Year 11, I am greeted with something new, something that I wouldn’t expect at the start of a school year. Fear. This seems like the only word to describe my feelings about the year ahead. Year 11 brings a huge expectation from all directions; my school year will be the first set of students to take the brand new GCSEs and that is frightening. When we do mock exams at school, we are uncertain whether our exams will actually be like this or something totally different. We are also unsure about what is expected of us as we have no grade boundaries yet so we cannot be officially told if we will be getting a 9 or 3 and this uncertainty means that we are left stranded as to how much harder we need to try. This uncertainty adds a whole new level of pressure to the mix. Once the Year 11s have left school it’s the Year 10s who remain to deal with the pressure; you’ll have teachers at you, saying things like “one year left till your exams now” and “you better get your heads down and revise”. But is this the kind of thing we want to be hearing?

E

Do we want to be given that extra pressure and fear of the year to come? In the last few weeks of school before the summer break, we are having more exams to find out whether we need extra support or tutoring. This almost constant scrutiny adds to the build-up of pressure we are placed under, as I don’t feel we are getting a breather from tests, and many pupils up and down the country would agree. I feel like a lot of the nerves and fear come from the idea that my school life is coming to an end, to be followed by a new and hopefully less stressful part of my life. I hope that future Y11s won’t have the same amount of nerves and fear as me and my fellow pupils when it comes to our GCSE exams, as slowly and gradually the courses and exams should become clearer and clearer for school pupils in the future. However, future Year 11s be warned… if the GCSEs can change now, then it can happen again at any time, so try not to get too comfortable with these new exams. All I would say is when it comes to your GCSEs, prepare for anything and brace yourself for a bumpy ride in the future, because they aren’t easy. But if you do get your head down and work hard then you will pull through with some great results.

“Going into Year 11, I am greeted with something new, something that I wouldn’t expect at the start of a school year. Fear.”

FROM SMALL REPAIRS TO FULL REPLACEMENTS, C CLEAR GLASS & GLAZING SERVICES WILL BEAT ANY LIKE FOR LIKE QUOTE. s cool autumn days set in and the nights get colder, you may be noticing just how draughty your home has become. Even when the weather is mild, gaps in window frames and doors can whistle and make a light breeze sound like gale force winds. This is a common problem, but one that can be easily rectified. If you have been putting off repairs because of the expense that often accompanies such jobs, C Clear Glass & Glazing is the solution. “People don't realise that window and door repairs don't need to cost the earth,” explains owner of C Clear Glass & Glazing Chris Wallace. “We're just as happy to repair a broken hinge as we are to fit a full window. Small repairs are our speciality." Having worked for other glazing companies as a glass and double glazing specialist for many years, Chris realised there was a gap in the market for repairs to uPVC and aluminium doors and uPVC, aluminium and wooden windows.

Adam comes with an ble culinary pedigree. impeccab c He spent an almighty four years at Claridge’s, London, working as a chef which enab bled him l t Th Q Pi

expertise throughout Europe, Australia u and the Far East before returning to his northern roots with Fischer’s at Baslow Hall. Assisted by Jonathan Butcher, who has been sous chef at Hardwick Hall, Adam had chance to displa ay some of his masterpieces at a tasting da ay for invited guests. Many of these dishes will appear on the Beestro’s Menus. Amongst his choices on the da ay were Mediterranean tart, scrumptious smoked haddock lasagne with leeks, basil, dill and mustard and mozzarella cheddar, and lamb ragout cooked for 6 hours in a spicy Moroccan sa auce with couscous. High tea aficionados will swoon over Adam’s honey y, elderflower and sultana scones, so light they could almost take flight. His honey parfait

(unchurned ice cream) is simply unbelievable in texture and taste; served with his own shortcake and stra awberries w wberrie and pollen sprinkles from the hive, the parfait makes for making a highly nutritious dish. Simply mouth-watering! Gloria insists that the Beestro fresh produce will, as far as possible be free from pesticides, herbicides and insecticides, for, as a biologist, she knows only too well that there are now over 500 additives in our food that were not there 50 years ago, resulting in many of the physical and metab bolic b conditions suffered today y. A breakfast muffin with bacon or sausage and egg will be availab ble all da ay, for those who, like Gloria, take breakfast as and when they can. A wide range of sandwiches, home-made cakes and scones (usually fused with honey), lite bites, lunches

and afternoon teas are on the menu thereafter. The chocolate, orange and mint cakes are to die for. Real teas and coffees are served in ‘proper’, old-fashioned ucers. china tea cups and sa au With the menu changing monthly, there’s sure to be a varied choice and something new and tantalising on the menu. The Beestro is fully licensed, and a selection of Proseccos, champagnes, whiskeys, gins and real ales offer an enticing and tempting option on a warm summer’s da ay (or there’s mulled wine in winter!). Bookings are now being taken for events and celebrations at Troway Hall. The idyllic backdrop is perfect for friends’ reunions, anniversaries, weddings, children’s parties or as a corporate venue. The natural surroundings add the final touch to any occasion

and for children (and adults!) there’s an educational twist. Two weddings ha ave already been booked for this prestigious venue. Former Councillor Jenny Booth described the Beestro as “A tribute to Derbyshire with wonderful landscapes.” Andy Dye, Independent Parish Councillor, said, “The food is outstanding; the views are stunning; but what really makes it is Gloria Ha avenhand.” Why not discover this delightful unique venue in a stunning backdrop for yourself ? Feel free to stroll onto The Lutyens Law wns and gasp at the natural bea auty of The Moss ss Va alley y. The Opening Da ay is due to take place on Weed dnesda ay 16th August 2017. See you there! The garden office Many of us have office spaces in our homes, but how much nicer would it be if we were closer to nature in the process? With big glass doors that can be fully opened up to invite the outdoors indoors, working from home would be much more appealing with one of these. Choose a simple structure or a den with added decking. Garden offices by Future Rooms start at £6,600 for The Solo and from £11,000 for a Commercial build. Visit www.futurerooms.co.uk to find out more.

Posh sheds TAKE YOUR PERSONAL SPACE INTO THE GREAT OUTDOORS, SAYS PHOEBE SEYMOUR an cave, man den, mantuary… whatever you choose to call it, it seems men have always needed a room of their own to hide away from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the household. This can be anything from a traditional office, to a grubby garage or tool shed, where men can do as they please without upsetting their wives or partners. Scholars of gender, including Paula Aymer, a professor at Tufts University, have referred to them as the “last bastion of masculinity”, a phrase which is thought to have come from the famous book, Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus by John Gray. But in recent years, a more sophisticated ‘man cave’ has emerged. Gone are the days when men would take cover in sheds filled with rusty garden furniture and cobwebs to relax or work on their projects. Thanks to TV shows such as Shed of the Year, George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces and Sarah Beeny's Double Your House For Half The Money, a new generation of men and

women have discovered their endless possibilities. Women too need a place to study or pursue their creative activities. After all, wasn’t it Virginia Woolf who said women need a room of one’s own? An increasing number of people – especially those who can’t extend their homes any further, are opting for outdoor garden rooms. Whether they use these spaces together or apart, men and women are realising the therapeutic benefits of spending their down time in a place they can call their own. Even celebrities and politicians need a bit of escapism from time to time. Wakefield heroine and famous artist, Barbara Hepworth, used to keep a bed in a small garden shed outside her home in Cornwall (now the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden) to take power naps in, whilst David Cameron recently unveiled his luxury £25,000 shepherd hut and Jeremy Corbyn’s idea of a ‘man space’ is his allotment. But they don’t have to be big or cost the earth. Whether you need a space to pursue a

hobby, work from home or to simply indulge in some quiet time, there are plenty of options and companies in and around Yorkshire who can help. Read on to see our round up of some of the best types of garden sheds around…

FEATURE

The gypsy caravan Traditional and compact, these sheds on wheels usually take the form of a horse trailer or an old fashioned, gypsy style caravan. Add a log fire and you’ve got the perfect home away from home Cameron’s shepherd hut comes under this category, but you don’t need to spend a fortune. Most start from £3,000, whilst a bespoke caravan from The Yorkshire Hut Company starts at £10,000. For more inspiration visit www.theyorkshirehutcompany.com.

The backyard bar

The futuristic pod

With summer upon us, it’s a great time to invite friends and neighbours round for a garden party. And what better way to impress your guests than with a backyard bar? Opt for a shed-turned-bar with a hatch to serve guests through or create a beach theme by choosing a thatched roofed tiki bar with seating all the way round. Small and simple shed bars start from as little as £165 on eBay and go all the way up to elaborate structures at £3,870.

If you are wanting to put a modern spin on your garden shed, rotating pods are the latest trend sweeping the nation. Those who have visited one of the many RHS Flower Shows happening all over the country this summer will no doubt have seen one by Ornate Garden. With an elegant sliding door and windows, you can be sure to be comfortable and cosy whatever the season. Whether you want to enjoy some alfresco dining or are in need of a bespoke garden office, the design team at Ornate Garden are on hand to help to create a luxurious summerhouse for £16,995 (including VAT).

Visit eBay or go to Nottingham-based Internet Gardener website at www.internetgardener.co.uk for more inspiration.

To find out how to create your own rotating pod, visit www.ornategarden.com.

If you are looking to create your very own spa, visit the Yorkshire Garden Structures website at www.yorkshiregardenstructures.co.uk to find out how.

The Scandinavian sauna Sheds are usually associated with summer, but why not create a space you can enjoy all year round? Take a leaf out of our Scandinavian neighbours with an outdoor sauna. Go for the traditional Finnish cabin, with wooden walls for privacy or a modern cube with huge glass windows to take in the gorgeous view of your garden in snow or shine.

The hobbit house If you want a building that forms part of the landscape, a hobbit-style hut is a great option. As those familiar with The Lord of the Rings series will know, a typical characteristic of the hobbit house is a dome shape and a turf roof. With just the door visible, it’s the perfect hideout for the most escapist homeowner. Those of us not lucky enough to have a hillside or the space to create one, you can save space with a flatroofed wooden shed with bedding plants on top. See how JB Landscapes got around this by visiting, www.jblandscapesltd.com/ green-roofs.

CUBANA’S CULINARY DREAM TEAM HAS A NEW HEAD CHEF AND A NEW MENU.

W

ith over a decade as second in charge – there was no-one better to take control of one of Sheffield’s flagship

kitchens. Erkland Xhaja is celebrating his move to head of the Cubana kitchen in Leopold Square with the unveiling of his first menu. He worked passionately under the command of former head chef Fabian Cruz for over 13 years – Fabian himself had been there since the day the celebrated venue first opened on Trippet Lane, many years before its move to bigger premises. Albanian born Erkland moved to Italy as a child before settling in Sheffield as a teenager. He originally started working at Nonnas on Ecclesall Road, joining Cubana in 2002 – Erkland now heads up a team of six that includes some of the most experienced and well-respected chefs in the city in the Cubana kitchen that caters for hundreds of covers every week and is now one of the city’s

busiest independent bar/restaurants. He is joined in Cubana’s culinary team by Nicolino Dente, former owner and head chef of Ecclesall Road’s Santinos, Stuart Berry, the original head chef at Nonnas and former owner of Chesterfield Road restaurants Kitos and Swanky Franks, and Ryan Christian, former owner and head chef of Sharrowvale Road’s The Pasta Bar. Erkland’s new menu sees 12 new dishes in a menu consisting of over 50 tapas dishes. It includes his own twist on the celebrated Brazilian stew made with diced pork shoulder, chorizo, smoked bacon, black beans, red peppers, tomato purée and smoked paprika. There’s also a big emphasis on fresh fish dishes including a seafood paella served in a traditional paella pan at your table and several tapas dishes with inspiration taken from trips to the Canary Islands – home of Erkland’s partner. Cubana co-owner Adrian Bagnoli said:

“There’s no-one better qualified than Erkland to develop the Cubana menu. The new dishes the team have come up with are some of the best we’ve served and fit in perfectly with the ever-present Cubana favourites for the perfectly balanced tapas menu. I’m looking forward to seeing how popular the new dishes will be and receiving feedback from our regular customers.” Adrian also ensured a dish he tried on a recent family holiday to Mallorca also made the new menu. He said: “We visited an excellent tapas bar in Alcudia and were blown away by their Tiras de Calamares y Chorizo which consists of fresh strips of squid served with small pieces of chorizo glazed in orange and honey– just delicious. Our new menu contains our own twist on that dish.” The full menu can be viewed online at www.cubanatapasbar.co.uk

Make a difference THE EDEN DORA TRUST WILL BE RAISING AWARENESS – AND HOPEFULLY MUCH MORE – AT A SPECIAL CHARITY EVENT AT MOSBOROUGH HALL IN NOVEMBER. he Eden Dora Trust was set up by Petrina after her six-year-old daughter became seriously ill with Encephalitis. Petrina created this desperately needed locally-based charity to provide support for children and their families/carers affected by childhood Encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) and the subsequent lifelong Acquired Brain Injury (ABI). The charity helps children and their families/carers feel less isolated, different, misunderstood and alone. They raise awareness and fund research into the causes, diagnosis and treatments of childhood Encephalitis and ABI, helping families when they need it most. They also fund educational literature along with training workshops for families, teachers and healthcare professionals involved with the ongoing care and rehabilitation of children affected by the life-changing illness. “There was nowhere near enough support out there and we knew that we needed to help others, knowing that I did not want any other family to go through this illness alone like we had too,” says Petrina. The Sheffield-based charity is now three years old and is the only charity in the UK to support children and their families suffering from childhood Encephalitis. The trust is supported by patrons including Louis Tomlinson, Paul Dickov, Andrew

T

Flintoff, Joe Hart and Paul Wait. As The Eden Dora Trust grows, they are able to fund invaluable research into Encephalitis and ABI in children, along with raising awareness of this debilitating, life-changing illness. They also run workshops on how to support children with ABI all over the UK. “We are not just here to fund, but to make a difference. We do this by five key aims aptly named SPEAK. S – support P – provision E – education A – awareness K – knowledge.” The charity has recently been awarded local fundraiser of the year at the Yorkshire Choice Awards, which highlights the incredible work they do. The Eden Dora Trust organises lots of amazing events throughout the year, to raise awareness and also provide children and families suffering with ABI and Encephalitis with a fun, memorable days out. The biggest event on this year’s calendar is the inaugural Charity Ball at Mosborough Hall Hotel, a black tie event on 17 November set to help raise funds, awareness and be an enjoyable evening for all involved. The event will host award-winning DJ Andrez from Damage, and guests will be

welcomed with drinks on arrival, before enjoying a three-course meal and an evening full of entertainment attended by some of Eden Dora Trusts patrons along with special guests. Currently the charity is looking for sponsors from local businesses to help support the night. If you are wanting to donate, get involved with the life-changing fundraising, or simply want some more information visit www.edendoratrust.org or give Petrina a call on 07814 121314. Tickets are £50 per person, sold as a table of 1012 and are available at tickets@edendoratrust.org. The Eden Dora Trust Tel: 07814 121314 www.edendoratrust.org Twitter: @edendoratrust

MOTORING

A THING OF BEAUTY Good news for all you Audi R8 Spyder fans, the Spyder is now available with the astronomically ballistic upgraded 602hp V10 from the R8 Plus Coupe. Named the R8 Spyder V10 Plus, the extra horses and the 25kg reduced weight propel the car from rest in 3.3 seconds – 0.3 seconds quicker than the model below – and sends it all the way to a top speed of 203mph, 6mph

faster than the ‘normal’ 540hp Spyder model. The electronic folding roof can raise or lower in 20 seconds at speeds up to 31mph if required. You’ll want to lower the roof as often as possible though as the noise this naturally aspirated 5.2-litre V10 makes is something truly special. Available to order now. Priced from £147,470.

SPEED AND SPACE DOMINATE THIS MONTH’S ROUND-UP. BY JORDAN CUTFORTH.

The E-Class All-Terrain Estate comes with standard 4MATIC all-wheeldrive, a nine-speed automatic gearbox and one efficient diesel engine, badged E350d. This 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 generates 258 hp and emits 179g/km, achieving 41.5 mpg, a vmax of 155mph and a 0-62 mph time of 6.2 seconds. Make a positive change Foster care doesn’t just transform the lives of the young people who are fostered, it also has the power to positively change the lives of foster carers, their families and wider support network who are involved in fostering, that’s why FCA is keen to encourage those interested in fostering to take that first step into enquiring about being a foster carer. Tim Clayton, regional manager for FCA in Yorkshire, said: “Many people would love to foster but they believe that their personal circumstances, or skills and experience, would prevent them from doing so. “Whether you’re single, over 50, childless or in a same sex relationship, fostering could be for you, so we’re encouraging people to make that initial enquiry.” For more information visit www.thefca.co.uk, call 0800 022 4330, or email startyourjourney@thefca.co.uk.
