Jo-Anne was recently invited by the hospital to talk live on BBC Radio Sheffield about her fundraising and the care she received from the NHS

In memory of little Mac JO-ANNE’S TIRELESS FUNDRAISING IS AIMED AT HELPING OTHER FAMILIES WHO HAVE SUFFERED THE HEARTBREAK OF LOSING A PREMATURE BABY. hen Jo-Anne Oldfield was coming to terms with the death of her baby son Mac following a premature birth, she was determined that something positive must emerge to help her cope with the grief. That was when Jo-Anne, managing director of the Sitwell Arms, began fund raising for the Neonatal Unit at Chesterfield Royal Hospital, and her efforts have helped to raise £32,000 so far. Which will be presented to the Neonatal Unit late March. Mac was born on 18 September 2013 and sadly passed away on 3rd October. Three months later Jo-Anne began her charity campaign and has never stopped. Jo-Anne said: “Mac was born prematurely at just 25 weeks and lived for a precious 17 days. With all the odds against us both, the neonatal unit did an amazing job to safely bring Mac into the world, while the intensive treatment unit cared for me. Unfortunately Mac later caught an infection that ended his short life. “I fundraise for various different reasons, and I really want to help other families that are forced into circumstances similar to ours to hopefully have a brighter outcome, and give their vulnerable baby the best chance possible. “Sharing my story and talking about Mac not only helps me to deal with his loss, but it also helps reach out to other people who

have struggled to come to terms with losing a child.” Jo-Anne says the support she receives from family, friends and work colleagues makes the challenge even more rewarding, and at times even overwhelming. She added: “I believe that we have to focus on the positives that are created through a negative and I can honestly say that this whole experience has brought us closer together as a family. I have also met some amazing NHS medical staff who often do an unappreciated, very challenging job. “One in particular who I have gained as a friend for life is Anahi Wheeldon-Lopez. Anahi was the midwife for both my difficult pregnancies and continues to support me professionally and personally, I cannot thank her enough. “There are so many people to thank and everyone gets involved - friends, family and customers of the hotel. My most recent event, a black tie fundraising dinner on 25 February, raised over £3,200. “It really is the support and generosity that motivates me to keep fundraising. Once I reach my £50k goal I would like to support my friend’s charity ‘Dresses for Angels’. She makes beautiful funeral gowns for babies who have passed too soon in memory of her baby girl, Lily Grace Fletcher, who was born sleeping.”

“Sharing my story and talking about Mac not only helps me to deal with his loss, but it also helps reach out to other people who have struggled to come to terms with losing a child.” Image | www.imagemagazine.co.uk 3

FROM EXTRA STORAGE SPACE TO GARAGES AND OUTDOOR OFFICES, SHEDWORLD CAN HELP. ooking for somewhere to store your garden furniture, a place to get away and relax or even cheap office space? Look no further than Shedworld on Greenland Road. With 25 years of experience, owner of Shedworld Julie Hopewell provides the highest quality outdoor buildings of any kind at great prices. Whether you’re looking for concrete garages, sheds, greenhouses, log cabins summerhouses or even garden furniture and animal housing, there is nothing that Shedworld doesn’t offer. The focus is very much on quality, rather than just offering the shoddily-made discount flat-pack options found at many large national chains. “Because money is quite tight, when people buy something they want it to last and that is exactly what we provide, explained Julie. But just because they offer to best for their customers this doesn’t mean you have to break the bank: “We do stock a budget range which is perfect for those who require general storage at a fantastic price. But even on the budget range, we never use inferior materials so you can be sure they will last.

L

Shedworld also offers a bespoke design service and, as an indication of the quality of their buildings, completed a two-room cabin for Graves Park which is used as a gift shop and information centre. “We have also supplied a three-room log cabin to a customer who then had a swimming pool installed as well as a shower room and toilets, added Julie. “It is a fraction of the cost of having building work done and because people aren’t moving house owing to the property market, these outdoor buildings are ideal for adding space to your home. With many small businesses looking to cut their overheads, Shedworld has been inundated with requests to build log cabins or concrete garden buildings to act as home offices. As a testament to the quality of service and products provided, a lot of their business is generated by word-of-mouth recommendations. Shedworld carry out site visits and do shed and garage removals as well as base work. They also offer a garage revamp service. Regardless of whether you are buying a

budget shed or a three-room log cabin, Julie prides herself on providing the same level of care and attention to all her customers. “We try and match the customer with the right product and advise them every step of the way. We just want to provide an environment where they feel comfortable to look round. Remember, Shedworld do not sell online so why not pay them a visit today? The mornings are brighter, the days are longer and we’re starting to think about taking off our warm layers, and venturing outside. But with warmer weather on the horizon, comes the realisation that we may have neglected our homes during the colder months and so the time has come to spring clean. Although no-one looks forward to the deep-clean, when you see the accumulation of dust in forgotten places you know it is time to drag your house out of the winter blues. With a little elbow grease and a lot of love, your house can have that fresh spring look again. Follow these ten simple steps for a happier, brighter home.

A

Tidy up the exterior Create a fantastic first impression at the impending garden parties by sprucing up the outside of your house. Give your front door a good clean and a lick of paint, change outdoor light bulbs, repaint wooden fences and add some plant pots, hanging baskets or a new welcome mat to the entrance of your new home. Rain and wind will have washed fallen leaves straight into the gutters. If clogged drainpipes and gutters are neglected, it can lead to flooding so make sure you give them a thorough clear-out when the dryer weather arrives.

Check the roof With the heavy rain and stormy winds up and down the country, your roof will have suffered a beating this winter. As spring approaches, it’s essential to check that no serious damage has been done. This can be done yourself, or, if the thought of climbing on the roof leaves you feeling queasy, you can hire a professional roofer. If any tiles have been displaced or broken, make sure you get them fixed before the April showers arrive.

HOMES

De-clutter After months of children, pets and yourself hiding indoors, your house is probably in need of a serious clear out. It’s time to be brutal with your belongings – find a place for it or throw it away. Take the time to have a deep clean of all your drawers and pack away your winter clothes for another year, to give you some more wardrobe space. You can even make some extra money by selling unwanted items online, host a car boot sale or donate to your local charity shop.

Garden

Deep clean appliances

With spring in the air, thoughts turn to our gardens. Keep it simple by rearranging your plants and adding new ones and buying new furniture, lights and accessories . Pressure wash your decking or patio, treat yourself to a fire pit or barbeque and prepare for the summer party season.

Your oven has probably seen a lot of use- especially over the Christmas period- so now is the time to get out the oven cleaner and scrub. It’s a good idea to give your fridge a deep clean too, so it’s all ready for the selection of spring and summer vegetables that will be filling it up shortly.

FLOWERS Spring is all about adding a splash of colour back into our lives- and what better way to do this by brightening up the home and garden with an array of flowers. Even though it’s still a little chilly, now is the time to start planting so that your garden will be bursting with colour come springtime. Try adding some extra vases with fresh flowers and indoor plants around your home to bring it to life.

Go green

Painting

Spring is the perfect time to start making your home more ecofriendly. Energy-saving features make houses cheaper to run and are a good investment financially, socially and environmentally. Keep an eye out for solarpowered products, energysaving light bulbs, home energy monitors that track your usage, eco-kettles and toasters to save energy and money. For everyday ways to cut down your carbon footprint, buy re-usable batteries, change to cloth napkins and donate your old newspapers and magazines to local animal shelters.

Winter weather can cause layers of paint to slowly fade away, so now is the time to make everything look brand new again by giving your outdoor surfaces a lick of paint. As well, staining wood surfaces such as fences, gazebos and tables will benefit from a new coating too. If you want to go all out and create a whole new spring look, then re-paint a couple of rooms indoor too. Picking bright colours is a great way to add some new life ito your house.

Dust the forgotten places Give your house some well-needed TLC by firing up the vacuum and getting rid of all the dust that will have accumulated throughout the winter. Take the time to take light fittings down, clear off the bookshelf, DVD cabinet and sweep away all the hidden cobwebs. Also, don’t forget to dust and polish the smaller things including picture frames and desk trinkets to give them a new, fresher lease of life.

UPDATE FURNISHINGS If you don’t fancy painting, then give your home a seasonal makeover by replacing the throws and thick curtains with light furnishings, cushions and colourful accessories. Bring in a few pastel or vibrant colours with the help of cushions, candles and rugs to give your home that spring feeling. As well, wash your pillows, duvets and curtains and get someone to help you flip your mattress.

Star of the show HOTEL VAN DYK TICKED ALL THE BOXES FOR A MEMORABLE EVENING FOR HANNAH SANDERS. ith a newly-launched menu, locallysourced spirits, grand piano, soft lighting and a genuinely friendly and attentive service, the Hotel Van Dyk ticks all the boxes for a memorable evening out. First impressions are positive, the hotel is situated in a picturesque corner of Derbyshire and is elegance itself. The white exterior looks like something out of a fairytale, with a tunnel of lights opposite the entrance, large bay windows and an imposing stone dog stood to attention at the double doors – I couldn’t wait to see the inside. Walking into The Bowden Restaurant’s bar area did not disappoint. We were greeted and seated in a spacious booth, the perfect setting to relax with a large glass of Merlot (£7.25) while my designated driver partner opted for a Coke (£1.85). Soon we were led through to the dining area and seated just a few feet away from the white grand piano, sometimes a source of live music but, in this case programmed to provide relaxing background sounds. Our meal began with a selection of white and brown artisan breads, with olives and oil for dipping and sundried tomatoes. Following this was an amuse-bouche, containing

W

avocado mousse, Marie Rose sauce and prawns. For my starter I opted for pan-seared scallops (£10.95) which were caramelised to perfection and complemented the smoked salmon ribbons and crispy savoy cabbage, whilst my partner chose the pressed pork (£9.25) served with both dried and pureed apples, which melted in the mouth. An intermediate course was next – a waldorf salad with a twist. The dish was steeped in butterscotch vodka, sourced locally from Brittain’s in Doncaster and certainly added the wow factor to every bite. For mains I chose the poached turbot (£24). The chefs didn’t miss a mark when it came to the fish, which was cooked and seasoned to perfection, and partnered with an inventive passion fruit jelly and caramelised onion mousse. My partner went for the duo of local venison (£27.50). The pan-seared venison was slightly pink in the middle with a blue spruce jus which ignited the flavours of the meat. The venison shoulder, which was wrapped in a leek and presented like shepherd’s pie, was the winner of the night, with its rich and tender flavour.

Homemade desserts proved impossible to resist. I went for the carrot cake (£8.45), which was delightfully moist and an espresso (£2.10) but, the real star of the show was the chocolate cased parfait (£8.75), which my partner chose. The dessert came encased in a chocolate shell and, once the hot caramel sauce was poured on top, opened to reveal the smooth, flavour packed parfait which went perfectly with the caramel shells dotted around the plate. The Castellucio di Norcia cycle route

When in Umbria... FIONA BARBER DISCOVERS THAT THE BEST WAY TO SEE THE COLOURFUL ITALIAN COUNTRYSIDE IS ON TWO WHEELS. WITH PLENTY OF GOOD FOOD AND WINE, NATURALLY. ust a few cautious pushes of the pedals and the motor whirred into action. The bike surged forward and I whizzed past alfresco diners devouring cones of gelato. This was a day of two firsts: my first time in Italy and my debut on an electric bike. In a tour-guided group, led by ecobike, we weaved through the narrow streets of Umbria’s historic capital, Perugia. Fooddrunk on pasta, cheese and bread, we visited the ancient Porta Marzia gates of the town and the stunning San Pietro’s church. Cruising around on an ebike is ideal for urban cycling, but to uncover the true character of this region and explore its lush and varied landscape, with its beautifully preserved small towns and hilltop villages, a little more effort is required. Umbria is a wonderfully diverse district and, whether you’re a seasoned cyclist,

novice, or on a family adventure, there’s a route to suit. Experienced riders may dare to challenge the long alpine slopes, while others can enjoy the many flatter routes. The gentle gradients of the Spoleto to Norcia disused railway line, which stretches 56km, offer riders of all abilities the chance to discover some of Umbria’s greenest countryside. This extensive gravel trail weaves through towering trees and skirts several now-empty village stations. It journeys through cool ink-black tunnels – head torches are a must – and gives way to bridges and viaducts offering picture-perfect panoramic views. We cycled the first 20km stretch and stopped at Zafferano E Dintorni in Castel San Felice to refuel on delicious homemade artichoke and wild hops risotto. This peaceful farmhouse bed and breakfast boasts idyllic views over the hills and mountains of

Valnerina, making it an ideal base from which to explore the emerald-green surroundings. After a pit stop in Castelluccio di Norcia to sample the local ricotta and admire the spectacular Piano Grande (great plains) – where wild flowers bloom from yellow to red and violet to white between May and July – we drove to hotel Le Dimore di San Crispino, located just a few kilometres from the hill-top town of Assisi. This hotel, restaurant, and spa, tucked away at the end of a winding country road, covers ten hectares comprising vineyards, olive groves and one of the most beautiful private gardens in Umbria. We relaxed on the tranquil veranda with chilled prosecco, and breathed in the sweet lavender air. If relaxation is top of your list, this venue is a must. No trip to Italy would be complete

TRAVEL

without sampling the local wines. While neighbouring Tuscany is home to some of the world’s most notable regions, Umbria offers an array of grape varieties, wine styles and something special for every palate. Where better to sample a taste than with a trip to a local winery? We headed south to Montefalco – famous for Sagrantino wine – past a flurry of brightlemon sunflower meadows, fruit-filled olive groves and uniform vineyards, before arriving at Le Cimate. Here, owner Paolo Bartoloni produces 90,000 bottles per year, with a focus on quality rather than quantity. He exports to the USA, Belgium, Austria, Germany and many other corners of the globe. On the menu are three reds, one rosé, two whites and one red dessert wine. The Montefalco Sagrantino is Umbria’s most popular and distinctive red wine. Garnet-red with distinct blackberry flavours, balanced tannins and acidity, this complex wine is a perfect accompaniment to meats and mature cheeses. As it happens, Le Cimate also produce their own ham, salami, and olive oil, all equally as delicious as the wine. For €15pp groups can enjoy a feast of meats, cheeses and bread, plus three wines to taste, or for €35 indulge in a three-course lunch plus wine. Visit www.lecimate.it for more info. After the winery I reflected on my time in Umbria. If there’s one thing I can be sure of from this whistle-stop tour it’s this: to soak up the rivers, rolling hills and olive groves, the piazzas, winding streets and hamlets, there’s no better way to do so than on two wheels. And another thing. Three days of Italian cycling fuelled by cured meat, cheese and wine is enough to make you feel – almost – like a pro. Head ducked, elbows tucked, I leaned defiantly into the decline. Chris Froome eat your heart out.

Luckily, we are spoilt for choice with a range of great activities, museums and some good old-fashioned fresh air right on our doorstep. From country parks to adrenalinefuelled outdoor activities, there is something for everyone this Easter. With the arrival of spring and a change in the weather (hopefully), the best place to start is Rother Valley Country Park. Whether it be a quiet family walk to see the local wildlife on the glistening lake or an afternoon of zorbing and archery, this is a perfect little suntrap for adventurers and families alike. Sheffield Cable Water Ski is one of the

park’s highlights, and adrenaline junkies will love their brand new Aqua Park. It just goes to show that you don’t need to go abroad to have fun in the sun this Easter. For the sport enthusiasts amongst us, those serious about golf will be pleased to find Rother Valley Golf Centre nearby, where you can admire the spectacular views of the countryside at an affordable price. Located in the heart of the Rother Valley Country Park, the centre boasts an 18-hole Blue Monster course as well as a nine-hole, par-three course for those serious about golf. Alternatively there is a 26-bay floodlit driving range with a range of deals for those wanting to hone their skills and prepare themselves for the course. If you are looking for something a little bit different, try FootGolf – the latest craze that is taking the sporting world by storm. As the name suggests, FootGolf is a hybrid of golf

and football, with the traditional golf ball being replaced by a football. Players take it in turns kicking the ball down the fairways into larger, specially adapted holes. The concept is exactly the same as golf, with the object of the game being to get the ball into the hole in as few shots as possible using only your feet. It wouldn’t be a British holiday if we didn’t have some rain, but luckily there are plenty of indoor sport centres to burn off some unwanted energy. With a range of sports including swimming, squash, badminton and tennis, Westfield Sports Centre in Sothall and Ponds Forge in Sheffield provide a great selection of indoor sporting alternatives. Science enthusiasts will not be disappointed by the science adventure centre Magna in Rotherham that provides a great hands-on experience with interactive exhibits and

fascinating displays aimed at all the family. Set in the Templeborough steelworks visitors can explore the wonders of science and technology in the four pavilions – Air, Earth, Fire and Water. For the history lovers amongst us on an inevitable rainy day, the Sheffield Life and Times exhibition at the Weston Park Museum provides an insight into the stories of Sheffield, all from the point of view of people who lived here. Alongside new additions such as an exhibition about Victorian fashion, visitors can still see Sheffield Life and Times favourites including Burton’s butcher shop and the Park Hill Kitchen, with plenty of interactive opportunities aimed at a younger audience. Or why not get wild at the Tropical Butterfly House, Wildlife and Falconry Centre? Based in North Anston near Sheffield, your children will have unforgettable animal encounters with

Mayfield Alpaca Farm on the other hand, specialises on animals closer to home. Situated to the north of Ringinglow Village, on the outskirts of Sheffield, visitors have the chance to pet and feed the animals against the spectacular backdrop of the Peak District. But there is much more than animals at the farm, with a small café located onsite offering a selection of treats, cakes and lunchtime snacks. When all else fails, a spot of retail therapy is always a possibility. Crystal Peaks is the obvious choice if you are looking for typical high street brands, but it’s also a great time to discover some quirky independent stores that

can be found in the nearby villages such as Kiveton and Wales. Bakewell is another great alternative for small independent shops, as well as making the most of what the Peak District has to offer. Sometimes we all just need a treat though and Traditionals is the perfect spot for some handmade cakes. With a selection of sugarfree and gluten-free alternatives, there is plenty of choice so that no one misses out this Easter. So, if you are looking for the best ways to beat the boredom this Easter and are looking to holiday at home, there are a range of different activities across the area to suit every member of the family. The perfect venue THE OLD RECTORY MAKES A BEAUTIFUL SETTING FOR YOUR BIG DAY, teeped in history, The Old Rectory is one of South Yorkshire’s most striking wedding venues. The beautiful grade II-listed stone building in Handsworth is tucked away in its own quiet grounds and could be mistaken for being in the middle of beautiful countryside, yet it’s conveniently just a short distance from the motorway and the city centre. From the moment you pass under the stone arch of the old coach house to the front of the fine old Georgian rectory, which looks out across the lawn and garden, you will know you have found your perfect wedding venue. Their personal approach means you can create a bespoke day. Centre manager and events co-ordinator, Tim Schafer, says: “We take a no-package approach. Every element, from chair covers and centrepieces to food and drinks, are priced individually. We work with you to pick and choose only the elements you want, to fit your budget and taste.” They can cater for anything from two to 200 guests and have a sit-down meal capacity for up to 140, although there is also an option to have a more informal buffet, Hog Roast or

even hire the Stone baked Pizza oven. The Old Rectory hosts around 50 weddings a year and possesses a history that stretches back 60 years, to the time it was converted from a private house. Why not take a look for yourself at the next wedding fayre on the 7 May or make a private viewing appointment via the meeting planner on the Old Rectory’s website. One of the things that also makes the Old Rectory unique is their charity status. “All the profits we generate at weddings go back into the running of the building as a community venue. We are home to over 30 different classes, from singing and art groups to yoga and belly dancers. We run pensioner lunch clubs and toddler groups and all of this is subsidised by the money made at weddings and parties,” adds Tim. MAKE MOTHER’S DAY! IT’S TIME TO SHOW YOUR MUM HOW MUCH YOU LOVE HER… HERE ARE SOME IDEAS TO HELP YOU MAKE SURE SHE UNDERSTANDS JUST HOW MUCH YOU CARE. BY RACHEL MARTIN.

FEATURE

very year Mother’s Day comes around and we often find ourselves at a loss as to the day’s events. What should you do? What gift should you get her? How do I tell her I appreciate her without the help of an impersonal card? Go the extra mile this year and treat your mum, grandmother or mother-in-law to something special, with the help of our guide to Mothering Sunday (March 26). We've even put together gift ideas, if you need some lastminute inspiration for that perfect pressie.

E

but will be seriously meaningful. Want to up your game even more? Get tickets to a pre/post-dinner cultural event like the ballet or the opera. Afternoon tea

Afternoon tea is the ultimate indulgence. From classic sandwiches, scones and clotted cream to quirky afternoon teas with a glass of champagne, the combination of tasty delights and your company will be sure to have your mum enjoying a lovely afternoon.

Cooking classes

Breakfast

If your mum loves to cook, treat her to a cookery course and inspire her to explore her passion. Whether it’s cooking alongside a renowned master chef, picking up new skills at a famous restaurant’s kitchen, or simply enjoying the opportunity to get to know some quality ingredients with an informative tasting experience, there’s plenty of gourmet treats to excite the palate of every amateur chef or Bake-off star in the making.

Either make reservations at the most delicious place in town, or if that’s not your mum’s style, have the whole family practice their cooking skills before the big day. Start the morning off right and whip up her favorite breakfast before she even has the chance to roll out of bed. A traditional breakfast tray will surely bring a smile to her face, and as an added bonus, a mug filled with her favorite tea could be the perfect final touch.

Enjoy a not-so-action packed day

Cook

What better way to escape the hustle and bustle of a busy working week than a day of pampering? From soothing one-off treatments to sumptuous day packages, treat your mum to some rest and relaxation. Check whether your local spa has any Mother’s Day specials or vouchers and if you can’t afford to spend the day at the spa, a candle, bath set or aromatherapy oils always go down a treat – namely because there's nothing better than a relaxing soak.

More often than not, mums are the best cooks in the family and while it’s quite an honour, it’s also quite a burden to bear. Though the rest of the family might not share her talent, cook up one of her favourite meals, grab a nice bottle of wine and leave the kitchen spotless when you're done. If you end up burning something, she'll forgive you. It'll still serve as a reminder of how much you really appreciate her.

Gifts Mother’s Day isn’t all about relaxation, there are gift to be opened too. An intuitive tip: a bland kitchen accessory probably won't impress her. Clothing is a good choice, but make sure you get the right size. Jewellery is another hit, but consider her tastes and your budget before committing to an expensive purchase. Stuck for Mothering Sunday present ideas? From fancy truffles to a fabulous flower bouquet, here are some thoughtful gifts that any mum will love come March 26. Chocolate What better way to win your mum’s heart than to treat her with a box of chocolates? From purist-pleasing dark chocolate to artistic creations that (almost) look too good to eat, the regions chocolatiers really do raise the bar when it comes to cacao. Flowers When it comes to Mother's Day, it's hard to go wrong with a bunch of flowers. Make sure to surprise your mum with the loveliest of bouquets bursting with her favourite flower arrangements. With so many companies keen to do the leg work for you too, all you have to do is fill in some details and voilà - flowers straight to her door.

Spend a day together Treat her to dinner or lunch

Sure, you love her famous shepherd's pie, but Mother’s Day is the time to take her to a restaurant where she's not the one behind the kitchen counter. Find out where she would most like to go and do some real planning – getting the whole family together takes work

Set aside all other plans and turn the day into an adventure. Grab the whole family and head to a favorite park, lake or ocean. Spending the time together (preferably outdoors) is what really counts, so have a picnic, go for a bike ride, take a hike, or do some gardening together.

‘Afternoon tea is the ultimate indulgence. From classic sandwiches, scones and clotted cream to quirky afternoon teas with a glass of champagne, the combination of tasty delights and your company will be sure to have your mum enjoying a lovely afternoon.’

Candles A stylish candle is one of life’s little luxuries, and one that mothers will surely appreciate. Alcohol Why shower her in love when you can shower her in prosecco? Treat mum to a bottle of her favourite tipple this Mother's Day. Garden-inspired gifts Whether she's a master gardener or just has a penchant for pretty bouquets, garden-inspired gifts will delight any botanically minded mum. From kneelers and tools to vases and books, the horticultural market is overgrown with potential green-fingered mum-pleasing pressies. Make her something special Perhaps your budget doesn’t stretch to spa days and restaurants? That’s ok, you could make something instead. Cake always goes down well, or perhaps you have a hobby that could help you create a thoughtful and unique gift?

EASTER

OUR WINNER Charbonnel et Walker pink Marc de Champagne truffles and milk chocolate egg, 225g £26 As delicious strawberry truffles, encased in a smooth milk chocolate egg, wrapped in a bow and then presented in a beautiful pink and blue box with gorgeous illustrations and gold writing, this egg was proof that good things really do come in small packages. Our panel were impressed by the silky chocolate in the centre of the truffles – and the champagne flavour certainly gave them a kick. This is the perfect Easter present for that special person in your life.

TOP OF THE CHOCS! OUR PANEL REVEALS THIS YEAR’S TOP EASTER EGGS. hen it comes to choosing Easter eggs for our friends and family nowadays, we are absolutely spoilt for choice. But which ones are best suited to who? To help with this predicament, our chocolate

W

tasting panel tried some of the most indulgently delicious chocolates and eggs on the market. Read on to find out which we rated the most eggcelent and which one was crowned our king of confectionary.

BEST FOR KIDS Tesco Doug the Dinosaur egg 200g, £3.50 Like all good child-friendly treats, this egg is shaped like a lovable character. Whilst this milk chocolate egg isn’t the best of the bunch, it is certainly cheap and cheerful - especially when you have a number of nephews and nieces to please.

BEST TRADITIONAL Cadbury’s Roses egg 300g, £6 Cadbury’s Roses are a must at Christmas time, so why not enjoy them at Easter too? Not only do you get a good-sized egg with the nostalgic taste we all know and love, you also get a few Roses to enjoy too.

BEST NEWCOMER Nestlé Quality Street Honeycomb Crunch egg 162g, £3 Whilst we are all familiar with Quality Streets, the honeycomb crunch is a new choc off the old block. Whilst we can sometimes feel cheated by a hollow egg, this one is quite thick with plenty of pieces of saccharine honeycomb running through it. 48 Image | www.imagemagazine.co.uk

EASTER

BEST DECORATED Bettys white chocolate rabbit egg 150g, £10.50 The gorgeous marbled effect, rabbit design and the way this egg combines white, milk and dark chocolate means this egg is a great all-rounder. Children and adults alike would be delighted to receive this and the flavours are fantastic too.

BEST FOR ALLERGIES Booja Booja almond and sea salt caramel egg 138g, £17.95 We couldn’t decide what we were more impressed by; the gorgeously painted wooden egg-shaped container or the delightful truffles inside. In the end we went with the latter, as these truffles are dairy, soya and gluten free, and still manage to taste great.

BEST FOR GROWN UP KIDS Prestat London Gin truffles and lemon milk chocolate egg 170g, £17.50 This egg was certainly the cleverest of the bunch. The white chocolate exterior of the truffles contained popping candy and represented the fizzy tonic whilst the smooth milk chocolate centre had a strong and satisfying flavour. The lemon flavour in the chocolate egg was subtle, but delicious none-the-less.

BEST ORGANIC OPTION Montezuma’s organic milk chocolate button egg 250g, £9.99 Not only is this egg organic, it’s also gluten free. If you’ve experienced the usual grainy, no-thrills variety of gluten-free chocolate, you’ll be pleased to hear that this one has a smooth texture and a great flavour.

BEST FOR WHITE CHOCOLATE LOVERS Sainsbury’s Belgian white chocolate and pistachio egg 220g, £6 Great for those that like their chocolate with a twist, the crunchy pistachios proved a delicious contrast to the smooth texture of the egg. If you are a sweet tooth, you won’t be disappointed by this reasonably sized, great-value option.

LEAVING A LEGACY TO SHEFFIELD CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL WILL HELP A CHILD’S LIFE – IT REALLY IS A GIFT OF LIFE. heffield Children’s Hospital is one of four stand-alone specialist children’s hospitals in the UK and provides world-class care for children all over Yorkshire and beyond. The skill of staff and the courage of patients and their families helps to make it an incredible place – but at The Children’s Hospital Charity, we’ll never stop striving to make it better. There are so many ways in which you can support the charity; one of the most significant ways you can help is leaving a gift in your will or create a will with Irwin Mitchell who will offer a discount when you quote The Children’s Hospital Charity, as well as make an instant donation to the charity. For 17-year-old Ebony Taylor, an incredibly generous gift, left by Sheffield local Betty in her will, has made all the difference to her treatment. Ebony, from Doncaster, has been treated at the hospital for epilepsy since 2012 and needs regular scans to monitor the activity in her brain. She was the first patient to benefit from a fully digital intraoperative 3T MRI scanner, partially funded by a £845,273 donation made by Betty. When Betty passed away she wanted to remember the hospital – a cause she had

S

championed all her life – in her estate. Her staggering once in a lifetime gift means that patients like Ebony will benefit from the most up to date technology possible and can get better in an environment designed with them in mind. Every penny donated through a legacy really does make a difference. Legacies also help to fund up to £250,000 of research into the prevention and cure of childhood illnesses and disease every single year. One of these projects developed a pioneering screening programme which detects rare life-threatening diseases in babies. Thanks to a successful pilot study leg by Sheffield Children’s Hospital, all new-born babies in England will be screened for four additional rare but serious conditions. The early detection and treatment of these conditions helps to give children the best possible start in life. Leaving a legacy through your will could make a life-saving difference for the children in our care – it really is the gift of life. To find out how to make a legacy donation or how you can create a discounted will through our partners Irwin Mitchell, contact support@tchc.org.uk.

MOTORING

Sting in the tail Welcome everyone to the most powerful Kia ever made. Called the Kia Stinger, and developed at the Nürburgring Nordschleife, it’s a fastback four-door saloon meaning there’s the added practicality of numerous doors yet still attains the sporty profile of a coupe. Very much inspired from the Kia GT concept for shown in 2011, the Stinger will certainly be one of the most eye-catching cars on the road.

There will be three engines available when the car goes on sale later in the year: a 252hp 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol engine, a 265hp 3.3-litre turbo petrol unit and a 2.2-litre four-pot diesel producing 197hp. All Stingers will come with an in-house eight-speed automatic transmission and they’ll be available in either rear-drive or all-wheel drive formats.

GREAT BUY FOR FAMILIES

Urban crossover Say hello to Vauxhall’s new SUV. It’s called the Crossland X and it’s going head-to-head with the likes of the Renault Captur and the Peugeot 2008. Known as an ‘urban crossover’, its small yet box-like dimensions (16cm shorter than an Astra) mean that its not only easy to navigate in the city but it’s practical too. With the seats in place the Crossland X has 410-litre boot space and this can be adjusted up to 520-litres thanks to the rear seats being able to move forwards or backwards. The Crossland X comes with a whole host of advanced technologies including a 180-degree panoramic rear-view camera, advanced park assist, forward collision alert with pedestrian detection, autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning and speed sign recognition.
