Ask the expert Sam Reaney, branch manager of Haybrook Crystal Peaks, offers his expert advice. What should I take into account when choosing an estate agent?
S
elling a house is probably the biggest transaction you’ll ever make. There are so many things to consider and it can be really tough to know which estate agent to pick. Here are some tips to help you make the decision. Do your research and make sure the estate agent’s values sit well with your own. They’re professional sales people with an indepth understanding of the property market and should be able to prove to you how hard they’ll work on your behalf to make the process as stress-free and efficient as possible. High street agents such as Haybrook are staffed by local people who know the area inside out. As well as having a great knowledge of the local property market, they also know the local bus routes, the best schools, the nearby amenities, the council information and all the events that happen in the community. Agencies such as this that form part of a nationally renowned brand not only benefit from a vast pool of knowledge and experience – not to mention the financial backing – but they often also have their own in-house financial and legal services so everything can be taken care of under one roof. This can really help when you’re in the thick of it, trying to juggle all the different components of selling a house. When comparing agents, don’t be fooled by low fees – if something seems too good to be true, it usually is, so check all the details to see what exactly they’re offering. Good estate agents are worth every penny as they will save you a lot of time and money in the long run, keeping the property chain together, chasing solicitors and liaising with vendors. No matter what you’re being asked to pay, make sure they will provide a professional and trustworthy service. To sum up, my advice is to choose an estate agent that has the broad knowledge required to effectively sell your home, but that also has a local, friendly feel.
If you have a question on any aspect of the property market, email stephanie.burns@regionalmagazine.co.uk and we will feature the answer in a future issue. To speak to the Haybrook Crystal Peaks team, call 0114 251 1710.

IMAGEGARDENING
A SUMMER GARDENING GUIDE Welcome to Image’s seasonal gardening guide. Keep this close throughout the coming months and make the most of your outdoor space. By Laura Booth.
020 - 021 Image May16_Layout 1 06/05/2016 09:07 Page 2
Summer gardens – a time for relaxation and enjoyment After working hard over the spring planting, pruning and growing, summer should be a time of enjoyment. There is still work to do, but your garden is at its best, so make sure you find the time to sit back, relax and enjoy it. However, just before you start to cool off, you should check your plants and vegetable crops for diseases. You will notice that your spring vegetables are ready to harvest, but it is essential that you check your crops and plants for signs of contamination. Common diseases found in your vegetable gardens and plants Southern blight – The fungus that causes this attacks roots, stems and leaves that are under the surface of the soil. First you will notice a wilting of the foliage. A white fungus growth may appear next if the soil is warm and moist. As the disease progresses, all plants that are next to each other in a row will die. To try and prevent it, crop rotation for vegetables might stop the fungus from occurring. Leaf spots – They commonly affect many vegetables and can affect plants. These spots are caused by fungi or bacteria. They appear mainly on leaves of plants and sometimes on their stems. The spots are dark tan in colour. Applying fungicide can help control the bacteria and the spots effectively.
How to harvest the vegetables you planted in spring: Carrots They are ready to harvest, two to three months after they have been planted. Loosen the ground with a fork to check that they are big enough. Leaf lettuce This type of lettuce matures around 40 days after seeding. Harvest as soon as the leaves are big enough, around four to five inches long. Harvest the plant in the morning when the leaves are full of moisture. Onions As soon as the onions are big enough you can harvest them. Usually they will need harvesting in mid to late summer. Potatoes You can harvest your potatoes when they have reached the size you want. Use a fork to help lift the soil and take the tubers out by hand.
Top tips for keeping your garden looking vibrant When we think of summer, we think of a large colourful array of flourishing flowers and vibrant green grass in our gardens. Keeping outdoors looking its best requires care and attention. • Deadheads need to be removed regularly, this stimulates the growth of the plant • In the summer it is essential to keep flowers and plants watered. Water plants at the beginning and the end of the day; try to avoid watering the plants in mid-afternoon when the sun is at its strongest. • Keep on top of weeds, they can be removed easily when the weather is hot, therefore it’s easy to keep on top of weed growth in summer. • During the summer, we might see periods of dry weather; you can prevent your lawn from drying out by keeping it longer than usual. Applying a lawn fertiliser at the start of summer will limit the damage to your lawn. • After harvesting your crops and maintaining the keep of flowers and plants, your garden will be looking at its best. As soon as its summer time, spend as much time outdoors as possible; this summer it’s time to make it look and feel even better with some of 2016’s garden trends, suitable for all different types of gardens. www.regionalmagazine.co.uk
Garden trends 2016 Bringing the indoors outdoors This years’ top gardening trend focuses on comfort, bringing furniture into our gardens like that inside our homes. New, contemporary, weather-resistant materials mean that you can achieve this style this summer. If you don’t wish to change your furnishings, keeping blankets outdoors on late summer evenings will also ensure a cozy surrounding, perfect for entertaining and socialising in summer months. LED fairy lights There is nothing better than adding a bit of sparkle to a garden party. Fairy lights are perfect for making your outside space look inviting when having friends over. These lights are perfect for decorating in bushes and trees and are perfectly safe for families. Animal nesting boxes, bird baths and feeders As well as bringing comfort outdoors, this year it’s about caring for our furry and feathered friends. Attracting wildlife into your garden can be exciting, especially if you have young children. Summer is a great time to interact with the wild creatures. Animal nesting boxes, bird baths and feeders will ensure that you can look after the wildlife this summer.

IMAGEEATING OUT
Top of the class
From left: Matthew Hurt, Hannah Quarmby, James Grey and Laney Smith
Lunch at The Schoolrooms is an indulgent treat, writes Stephanie Burns.
A
t this time of year, a mere break in the clouds is enough to warrant a dash into the countryside – let alone a full blazing sun. So when a mild lunchtime presented itself, we jumped in the car and headed out to Bradfield to see if one of its well-loved businesses really was as good as we’d heard. Since The Schoolrooms’ original managers took charge again earlier this year, the café/deli/butchery has once again been winning rave reviews for its local menu that is almost entirely made by hand by head chef James Grey and sous Laney Smith. Out front, Matthew Hurt and Hannah Quarmy provide a friendly and welcoming service. It was the last Friday of half term when we visited and we were lucky to get a seat in the bustling café, which can be found in the eves of the former school. Looking round, our fellow diners were enjoying the weekly special of fish and chips – complete with tartare sauce, pea puree and lemon wedge – for just £5. At almost half the usual price, this is an absolute steal, but we couldn’t help being tempted by some of the menu’s other offerings. It was the steak and Bradfield Brewery ale pie that caught my partner’s eye. Served with seasonal veg, fat chips and rich gravy, and accompanied by a glass of Argentinian Malbec, he made sure this lunchtime treat was as indulgent as possible. With tender meat, a wonderfully crisp puff pastry lid and seriously good chips, the dish was a real hit. I chose a lighter option; the daily deli board. The chunky wooden board came
IMAGEmagazine 30
laden with homemade ham hock terrine, three artisan cheeses, half a Toppings pork pie, real ale chutney, a tiny Kilner jar of pickled onion, salad with shards of crisp prosciutto, and two thick slices of fresh brown bloomer – most of which is sourced from the deli and butchery downstairs. Every element was great but the star of the show was that terrine; full of flavour and absolutely delicious. To complete the experience, my partner ordered the gooey caramel chocolate fondant, served warm with vanilla Peak District ice cream. It was a fantastic end to his hearty meal and he took great pleasure in scraping every last crumb from the bowl. Meanwhile, I had turned my attentions to the counter’s tantalising selection of fresh cakes, tray bakes and biscuits. I can never resist a fruit scone and when it’s served with Tiptree raspberry jam and light-as-air whipped cream – all the better. As we left, we passed a group of walkers who were basking in the autumn sun out on the terrace, taking full advantage of the unseasonably warm weather. Given the standard of the food at The Schoolrooms, I won’t be waiting for another burst of sunshine to return. Come rain or shine – it’s well worth a visit.

Crystal Peaks wins national prize for customer service Crystal Peaks has won a major national award for its customer services. The shopping mall received the ACE Awards Best Customer Services prize in the 40,000 to 80,000 sq ft category at the annual British Council of Shopping Centres (BCSC) shopping centre managers conference. The ACE Awards celebrate the best in the industry, rewarding the dedication, innovation and inspiration that deliver outstanding examples of customer experience in shopping centres around the country. The award follows a number of mystery shopper visits to the centre, all of which reported excellent levels of customer care. Among areas they highlighted were the friendliness and helpfulness of centre staff, the range of shops and food outlets available, high standards of cleanliness throughout the centre, convenience of parking and public transport links and even the provision of a free mobile phone charging point.
The annual Mosborough Rugby memorial day, which took place on St George’s Day, was a great success and raised £950 for Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice. The event started as a fundraising day after the loss of some good friends and club members and has evolved over the years into a family celebration day. This year’s event kicked off with an under14s tournament and the festivities continued throughout the day with senior games – both won by Mosborough – family-friendly activities, a cake stall and plenty of food. The fundraising continued with a beach rugby tournament in Majorca. Fifty two players from Mosborough joined the 35 men’s and 21 ladies’ teams taking part in the tournament, which attracted more than 3,000 people. To support the club’s fundraising effort, search for ‘Luke Gayton’ on www.justgiving.com. The family behind the award-winning

Rediscover Atkinsons There are great bargains to be had in the final few days of the spring sale at Atkinsons, Sheffield’s only independent department store on The Moor. The sale includes many items that are half the sale price. But be quick as this special event only lasts until 4pm on Sunday 15 May. “You should certainly see some exciting changes as we want to offer our customers a shopping experience that is up to date in every way,” said David Cartwright, sales and operations manager. “However, one thing that will stay true as it has always been is to bring the people of Sheffield top quality merchandise at competitive prices. With a clean, safe and competitively priced car park directly above the store, along with four newly refurbished eateries, there’s no better time to rediscover Atkinsons.”

PROMOTIONARK VETERINARY SURGERY
When your faithful friend is suffering you need the best possible veterinary care, which is where Ark Veterinary Surgery comes in.
W
e all want what's best for our pets and Ark Vets believes they've got the key. Newly offering keyhole surgery (or laproscopic procedures) for their operative patients, is just one example. Recovery post classic abdominal surgery means a minimum of two weeks recovery, equating to lead walks only or house confinement—the worst kind of misery for your pet, and you. Now, Ark Vets in Killamarsh and Dronfield have started to offer minimally invasive laparoscopic surgical procedures to shorten the
IMAGEmagazine 40
down time that our pets experience post-surgery. Not only can laparoscopic, or keyhole, surgery be used in making spays less traumatic, but other surgeries which can be taken on using this technique are as follows: biopsies of internal organs, for example the liver; abdominally retained testicles; exploratory procedures to visualise an animal’s internal abdominal architecture; gastropexy (attaching a section of the outer stomach lining to the internal abdominal wall, in effort to avoid bloat in atrisk dog breeds) or to perform ear, nose and throat investigations and procedures. Laparoscopy allows for better visualisation of abdominal organs; this greater surgical precision minimises pain and blood loss. The difference in the amount of disruption to our pet’s body is significant, meaning faster healing and notably less discomfort. Laparoscopic spaying has been proven 65per cent less painful and there are over 50per cent less post-operative complications when compared to the old methods. Dr. Ian Lowe, partner and veterinary surgeon at Ark Vets, is championing the use of these new capabilities and is also a certified exotic animal specialist (GPcert (ExAP)); therefore, operating on our smaller, more delicate creatures, is less daunting than it was when just doing procedures with hands and the naked eye alone.

Continuing on the theme of best and safest practice for our pets, Ark Vets have recently started offering Pet Health Plans in a three-tier system: economy, classic and ultimate. Ark Advantage provides you with a simple, money-saving way to give your cat, dog or rabbit the regular preventative treatment he or she needs, from only £6 per month. Regular health and maintenance checks with Ark’s dedicated and passionate staff, convenient monthly payments for routine services, optional accidental injury cover, exclusive seasonal offers and promotions and a personalised treatment planner are all perks of plan membership. Since obligatory microchipping for our dogs was made law by the English government last April, all microchips are now being offered at an affordable price of £9. Book a slot for your animal or ask a member of Ark’s staff about any of these new offers. Requests for CO2 surgical laser treatment have been substantial since this capability was introduced at Ark. Rapid healing, reduced healing and pain, plus the decreased risk of infection continue to be a favourite reason for adopting this mode of surgical technique. This process is not only exclusively available in Sheffield at Ark Vets, but the Killamarsh practice is also one of only a handful of veterinary surgeries in the UK to offer it. Ark understands how scary emergency situations involving your pet can be. They are one of the only few remaining practices in Sheffield to offer its own out-of-hours service with emergency cover to registered clients, 24/7, 365 days a year. All vets are legally obligated to provide 24-hour cover to animals under their care. However, this can be misleading. Many vets who say they provide their own 'out of hours' generally contract their out-ofhours work to an independent company. This means that, once their practice is closed for the day, if your pet needs attention you will be required to take them to a different vet, usually based in an unfamiliar and rather inopportune part of town. They will have no access to your pet's clinical records, so there will be no way of knowing your pet's specific medical needs, apart from what you tell them. Another major issue with using an outside solely out-of-hours emergency provider is just that they only cover out of hours. So, if your pet requires ongoing care after an overnight stay, you are responsible for transporting your pet back to your regular vet for treatment during the day, and then taking them back to the provider again that evening, if recommended. Outof-hours care is provided by Ark vets and nurses, at their own sites, with instant access to your pet's medical records. Ark appreciates dealing with an emergency situation is stressful and upsetting enough without having the added complications of not knowing what to do, who you will see or where you need to go in order to get your pet seen as a matter of urgency. If your pet needs to undergo a surgical procedure under anaesthesia, Ark Vets will obtain a full clinical pre-anaesthetic assessment before the vet decides on a tailored anaesthetic regime specifically designed for your pet's individual requirements. Sevoflorane, an anaesthetic agent, is used at Ark. This agent is used by paediatric hospitals across the nation for its known safety record, allowing for smoother and more rapid induction and recovery, greatly reducing anaesthetic time and ultimately reducing risk to your pet. This is a major advantage for the young, mature, or more vulnerable patients, and especially exotic species. Ark Vets is, again, one of the few practices in the UK using this agent. Their comprehensive in-house laboratory uses state-of-the-art analysis equipment to deliver accurate and, in many cases, immediate results, often leading to a rapid diagnosis or in order to determine the best course of action for each animal. In addition,
www.regionalmagazine.co.uk
Ark's digital x-ray suites offer instant detailed images that can be easily accessed from both sites. Providing the aforementioned capabilities, Ark Vets is able to treat your pet as quickly, thoroughly and efficiently as possible, thereby reducing the risk of complications and deterioration. Ark's first-rate staff, outstanding facilities and cutting-edge equipment, available in-house, allows them to deal with problems and in-depth surgical procedures many other first opinion practices can not. At Ark Vets, you and your pet are in the safest hands. Ultimately, what would you choose for your beloved friend?

Embrace your adventurous side – rent a campervan or motorhome from Sheffield-based VIP Camper Hire.
E
ver wanted to get away from it all, embracing the freedom of the open road and waking up each morning in the fresh air? VIP Camper Hire in Sheffield offers the perfect opportunity for adventure. The beautifully refurbished, fully customised Volkswagens are available to rent for just £275 for a three-night weekend or £550 for a full week. Both vehicles have been expertly built, restored and customised to an exceptionally high standard. The motorhome sleeps four and features a bathroom with shower and WC, a fridge/freezer, a kitchen with sink and gas cooker/hob, storage, a TV and DVD player, a gas heater, a cycle rack for two bikes, a reversing camera and a wind-out awning. It’s a real home from home. The more compact campervan drives like a car, making it perfect for navigating narrow country roads or for those unsure about driving a larger vehicle. Transporting and sleeping up to five, it has an elevating roof, a kitchen with sink and gas hob, a fridge/freezer, an air heater, storage, a cycle rack for two bikes, a reversing camera and a wind-out awning. Whether you fancy a weekend in the Peaks, want to surprise your other half with a trip away, are planning several weeks travelling around Europe, or would like to make the vehicles part of your next celebration, the options are endless. The vans make a unique addition to a wedding –

imagine wowing your guests by hiring this modern version of a classic campervan as your wedding transport, or retiring to the motorhome with your new husband or wife after a day of celebration. The average motorhome costs in excess of £40,000 and is therefore unaffordable or unjustifiable for many people who would love to own one. With VIP Camper Hire, you can enjoy all the benefits without the huge price tag or the guilt of seeing it sit on the drive most of the year. If you are thinking of buying your own campervan or motorhome, VIP Camper Hire offers the perfect opportunity to carry out a proper road test. For more information, FAQs and a gallery of pictures, visit www.vipcamperhire.co.uk. IMAGEMOTORING
Nissan turns up the drama on the GT-R The current-gen Nissan GT-R has been with us now since 2007, and every year since the Japanese company has tickled its underbelly and internal workings – an extra dollop of power here, a suspension tweak there. You get the idea. Now Nissan has really gone to town with the MY17 edition and the changes are the most dramatic yet. In essence, the car’s looks have been changed giving it a more aggressive stance on the road with better aerodynamic properties. There’s a more luxurious new interior with fewer buttons and better sound deadening. The suspension has been changed to give better handling and improve ride quality. Power has also been raised to 562hp. The order books opened this month with first deliveries this autumn.
Jordan Cutforth rounds up the latest from the world of motoring. Feel the noise The latest generation of the Audi R8 is a welcome relief. Instead of following the rest of the industry by downsizing and turbo-charging their engines, the R8 has stuck to its guns and kept to a naturally-aspirated formula. Not only are these engines more responsive compared to their turbo-charged counterparts, but they’re considerably louder too. As you would expect, the R8 Coupe is a fantastically aurally stimulating machine but this can only get better because now the Spyder version is coming along. Available to order from later in the spring with deliveries at the end of the year, the new R8 Spyder will come with a 532hp 5.2-litre V10 powerhouse mated to an S-Tronic dual-clutch gearbox. As with the Coupe, there’s no manual available.
Diesel joins the Club With the launch of the latest Mini Clubman back in October of last year, it was only a matter of time before the most fuel-efficient diesel variant was placed under the bonnet. It’s called the One D Clubman and it’ll be powered by a 1.5-litre three-cylinder diesel producing 116hp, which can get the Clubman from 0-62mph in 10.4 seconds. Not bad for a car which in manual trim emits less than 100g/km of CO2 and manages 74.3mpg on the combined cycle. Automatic is slightly less frugal. High standard equipment levels which includes the likes of Mini Navigation, DAB, Bluetooth, Cruise control, MINI Connected and MINI Excitement Pack, 16inch alloy wheels, sports leather steering wheel and automatic lights and wipers. Available now. Priced from £21,375.
Reach for the sky Want your German super-coupe to be a little more… draughty? Well we have good news for you; the C63 is going topless. It’s the C63 AMG Cabriolet and it’s an electricallyoperated multi-layered fabric job which can be lowered or raised at speeds of up to 31mph. As it’ll be based on the C63 AMG coupe, it’ll come with the same 4.0-litre bi-turbo V8 motor producing either 469hp or 503hp in C63 S guise, and it’ll come with all the same equipment options. It literally is a C63 with the roof chopped off. It’ll weigh more than the regular car, and certainly cost more too. But will you really care when there are millions of miles of blue sky at your disposal? The C63 Cabriolet will be launched in August.
