Wards’ Gardener’s Guide to Late Spring PREPARE YOUR GARDEN – READY FOR THE NEW SEASON USING THESE HINTS AND TIPS FLOWERS
LAWNS
Hardy annuals can be sown in pots or modules to provide colour in the garden. Wards stock a range of modular trays, which are useful for sowing half-hardy summer bedding plants such as marigolds, lobelia, and petunia. Sweet peas can be sown outside this month or plant out Wards’ ready grown sweet pea seedlings. Wards stock a range of seeds, tool and canes as well as readymade wigwams to climb up, using a light twine to tie the plants in. Plant summer-flowerers such as dahlias, primulas and gladioli, or, if you’re after an instant burst of colour, alpines, primroses, carnations and dianthus (Wards stock the gorgeous dianthus variety ‘Pink Kisses’).
TREES AND SHRUBS Feed trees, shrubs and hedges with a balanced fertiliser such as Growmore, sprinkling it over the root area before hoeing into the soil surface. Lightly cut back lavenders to prevent them getting too leggy and woody. Wards stock all the tools you need, including secateurs, pruners and shears. Loosen any tree ties that are digging into the bark, or could do so as the trunk expands, and tie in climbing and rambling roses to trellis and pergolas securely, but not too tight. Wards stock a range rot-proof, buckle or chain-lock rose, shrub and tree ties.
Mow lawns when necessary - whenever the grass is growing - the aim is to maintain a constant height throughout the year. If your lawnmower’s blade has seen better days, Wards offer a blade sharpening service to bring it back to life. Repair lawn edges to create a 7.5cm (3in) ‘gutter’ around the lawn. This will prevent grass creeping into borders. Wards stock a range of half-moon edging irons and sharp spades. Apply a high nitrogen spring lawn fertiliser at the beginning of the month to encourage good, strong growth. If moss is a problem choose a combined fertiliser and moss killer such as Evergreen Complete 4 in 1. It is still a good time to sow a wildflower meadow, and Wards stock the ready-mixed seed to do so.
PONDS Don’t worry if the water in your pond suddenly turns from clear to greenish, it’s natural for a certain amount of algae to grow in the spring as life begins to stir after the winter. Add more oxygenating plants to help clear the water. Wards now stock Bioforce Revolution - an efficient and low maintenance method to keep your pond clear. Feed large aquatic plants by inserting special aquatic slowrelease fertiliser tablets well below soil level around From August, the base of the plant. Waterlilies are also big feeders. the sale of po weed in the UKnd Contain vigorous pond perennials by planting will be illegal du invasive natur e to its them in aquatic plant baskets and topping with a e. Time to think about Bio Revolution - force layer of gravel to prevent fish stirring up the as in store for a k compost. demonstratio
n
STRUCTURES Use a stiff-bristled brush to remove algae from paths. Remove dirt and algae from walls, paving and patios too - it’s easier at this time of year before too much has grown. Wards stock all the tools you need, including Patio Magic, which kills and controls green mould, moss, and algae on all outdoor hard surfaces. In dry spells, you can treat timber structures with wood preservative and stain.
FLOWERS, TREES AND SHRUBS OF THE MONTH Lavandula stoechas (French lavender) - an aromatic dwarf shrub, with narrow, grey-green leaves and short-stalked, dense, ovoid heads of blackish-purple flowers surmounted by a tuft of purple bracts. Ideal for growing in containers, tubs and patio pots. Photinia ‘Red Robin’ - a popular evergreen shrub with glossy green leaves, white flowers in flattened flower heads and young red shoots. Often planted as a specimen shrub or as a fast-growing, dense, evergreen hedge. Japanese maples: Acer palmatum Garnet - small, deciduous trees grown for their graceful habit, autumn colour and beautiful foliage which may be coloured or deeply dissected. Acer palmatum Dissectum - identical leaf formation to the Acer palmatum Garnet but with green finely toothed leaves that turn orange in autumn. Acer palmatum Skeeter’s Broom - a distinguished Japanese maple with an attractive, slender upright habit. It is bright red in spring, turning to a deep ruby red in summer, deepening to bright ruby red in autumn. Nemesia ‘Wisley Vanilla’ - a tender perennial often grown as a bedding plant. The flowers are white with a very pale pink flush, particularly on the upper petals, and a yellow eye; strongly vanillascented. Nemesia Raspberries and Cream – a unique, new, multipurpose variety with amazing flowers from late spring to autumn.
Wards stock all the equipment you need to get your garden looking fantastic year round, as well as a huge range of flowers, bedding plants and trees.

EATING OUT
Vine dining
RACHEL MARTIN RE-DISCOVERS INDIAN CLASSIC DISHES AT THE VINE. hen most of us think of Indian restaurants, we think of crisp white tablecloths, polished silver cutlery and roasting metal burners in the middle of the table. So The Vine Indian Cuisine, which is celebrating its second birthday later this month, is a bit of a one-off. Formerly known as The Vine Tavern, it is actually Mosborough’s first-ever Indian restaurant. The 100-cover dining room is brightly coloured and packed to the rafters with ostentatious accessories and daring red and gold detailing - nothing like the dark and dingy 18th century pub that once occupied the space. As we arrived, subdued lighting and warm welcomes set a relaxed tone. “No rush, take your time,” said our waiter Mohammed, who is also the son of owner Muktar Ali - known as Ali - as he showed us to our table. While we snapped poppadums’ (50p), precariously topping them with either chilli and lime pickle, mango chutney or a cooling garam masala yoghurt (£2.50), we made a start on navigating the menu and requested a Cobra beer (£3.20) and large glass of house red - a smooth concha y toro merlot (£4.20) to help see us through. The menu is nearly as big as the restaurant; five pages in total and offers a great variety of Bangladeshi and Punjabi house specials, alongside some more exclusive seafood dishes,
W
including tandoori king prawn masala (£11.90) and machli bhuna (£9.50). To start we ordered the mixed kebab (£3.90) - a selection of various meat and vegetable starters to share. There were several elements to the platter, but the tender sheik kebab and exceptionally crisp onion bhajis, devoid of any grease and well-seasoned with a light inner texture, really shone out. We put our entrees in the hands of Mohammed, who recommended the adraki (£8.50) and handi (£8.50) lamb, both of which had the hallmarks of great home cooking. “My dad is in the kitchen,” he acclaimed. “He’s been in the restaurant business for more than 35 years and he uses all of his own recipes. This is all home-grown cooking. “The handi is my go-to dish and everyone I’ve recommended it too has enjoyed it. It’s now a staple entrée for many of our regulars and I haven’t had a single criticism yet”. This wasn’t about to change. The spicing of the lamb handi was delicate; the aromas of fresh garlic, ginger and bay leaves wafting out of the bowl. It was comfort food with a spicy kick and the sauce had a great earthy quality, possibly from the addition of the green peppers in its preparation. The consistency of the adraki lamb was just right too, the rich scent and toasty notes from
the roasted fresh ginger gratifyingly pungent. The accompanying coconut rice (£3.20) was cooked to perfection, proving light and as distinctly aromatic as one would hope for, and the keema naan (£2.80) was satisfyingly savoury and sweet, contrasting well with the other dishes. We spent a lovely evening at The Vine and it really did catch me by surprise. I knew to expect the good old classics, but I didn’t expect them to have moved so fluidly with the change in India’s vibrant culinary scene, still retaining its history and origins. The Vine continues to be one of Mosborough’s most popular restaurants and on the evidence of the service and food on our visit it has many years’ good years ahead. WEDDINGS
Wedding origins WHY DO BRIDES WEAR WHITE, AND SHOULD YOU REALLY INCLUDE GARLIC IN YOUR BOUQUET? PHOEBE SEYMOUR DELVES INTO THE HISTORY OF WEDDING DRESS TRADITIONS.
WEDDINGS
o, you have accepted his/her proposal and are now dreaming of the perfect, sparkling white dress for your big day. The white dress is so synonymous with weddings, you would be forgiven for thinking blushing brides have always dressed this way. However, history buffs and marriage enthusiasts alike may be interested to learn that it hasn’t always been this way. Read on to discover the weird, wonderful – and not necessarily romantic – origins of the modern day wedding dress.
S
The dress Contrary to popular belief, the white dress wasn’t chosen to represent the purity and innocence of the bride, but became fashionable after Queen Victoria wore white for her wedding day in 1840. Victoria (the trend-setting Kardashian of her time) wore a plain white dress to marry Prince Albert simply because she liked the colour. But, she wasn’t the first to do so. Mary Queen of Scots wore white when she married Dauphin François of France in 1558. Although back then, this was considered scandalous, as white was traditionally worn by royal ladies in mourning. Before Victoria’s influential white dress, women of high social standing wore rich and bold colours to show off their status. Back in the Middle Ages, as it was routine for royals to marry for political gain rather than love, the bride needed to make sure she impressed the elite groom with her wealth and beauty. The wife-to-be was responsible for representing her country and so needed to exhibit power, wealth and superiority to be a desirable candidate for an alliance. To show these traits, the seamstress would use the most lavish materials, silk, satin and fur being popular choices. So by the time Victoria’s white dress came along, brides all over Britain wanted to follow suit. One popular lady’s monthly magazine described white as “the most fitting hue” for any bride. After that, white was considered the musthave colour and merchants saw this as an opportunity to up the prices of their garments. The white dress therefore became a symbol of wealth and desirability – a trend that is seemingly here to stay. Well, every bride wants to feel like a queen, right?
The veil and train
THE BOUQUET
The veil and train on the other hand, originated much further back in Roman times. Roman brides were swaddled from head to toe in a gigantic flame-coloured veil called the flammeum as it was believed its fiery appearance would scare off evil spirits. There is evidence to suggest that veils continued to be worn to protect brides’ faces well into medieval times. Similarly, bridesmaids wore similar dresses to the bride to confuse the spirits. The veil and train also prevented brides from running away from their grooms – and vice versa, as the bride’s face would usually only be revealed to the groom at the end of the ceremony. The lifting of the veil was also used as a symbol of the groom taking possession of his new wife and accepting her for all she was – for better or for worse. Moving closer to the modern day, everything a young princess wore on her wedding day was considered chic. Everyone wanted to emulate the regal style and as lengths of material signalled a more lavish and expensive dress, long trains were adopted by more ‘common’ brides – another element of the wedding dress that has stood the test of time.
Flowers may seem like the most romantic part of your wedding attire, but again, they were a device to ward off those pesky evil spirits. This ritual stems from a 17th century tradition of having fragrant herbs and plants such as garlic and dill in your bouquet. That’s right – garlic! The 1600s are famous for the plague epidemic and potent herbs like these were used in a desperate attempt to survive the disease. Not only were herbs thought to be good for your health (and as it turns out, rightly so), their strong scent was thought to ward off spirits. It will come as no surprise then, why would-be brides were keen to catch the bouquet – it wasn’t just their married life that depended on it. Female guests would also try to rip off pieces of the bride’s dress and flowers on her big day in order to obtain some of her good luck. To escape from the crowd the bride would toss her bouquet and run away. However, we can’t imagine women attracting many potential partners carrying this kind of bouquet around all day.

Kenneth and Trudy Ashton with their great-grandchildren at the family party to celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary

However, one lady caught his eye on that particular evening and 70 years later, the Waterthorpe couple certainly have an unbreakable bond. When Trudy (90) and Kenneth (94) began their romance he was on leave from the army. The pair, who had never met despite having the same circle of friends, instantly made a connection, although there was one slight complication as Trudy was there with another man. “She walked in with another chap, but she left with me so I must’ve done something right,” says Kenneth. However, this courtship faced another threat as Kenneth was stationed in the Middle East and Italy in Kenneth and Trudy (right World War II. with their Although he was great-grandchildren fighting for his (below) and country in lifegrandchildren (right) threatening situations, he still managed to write to Trudy every day. On his return, the pair married on 5 April 1947, Kenneth’s birthday, at St Silas Church. “We put on a do at The Broomhall Tavern after, but it wasn’t splash as we were

still on rations. Friends and family saved up coupons for us so we could buy a few things to put on a nice spread after the ceremony.” The couple went on to have two children, five grandchildren and then nine greatgrandchildren. To this day they ensure the family all gets together at least once a year, usually at their annual anniversary party which has become something of a family tradition. This year, to celebrate their platinum wedding anniversary, they had a family meal at The Sitwell Arms. “This is something we do year by year. As we don’t see some of the family very often it keeps us in touch. When anything happens to
us, we hope that the family will carry on the tradition.” The couple have overcome numerous hardships during their time together. Trudy not only had a nasty accident at work, but battled cancer for the second time eight years ago. Trudy was told by doctors she wouldn’t live past two years without a major operation which took her out of action for several weeks. Kenneth is still full of praise and admiration for his wife. “She’s come out the other side, she’s brilliant and the strongest person I know,” says Kenneth. “After everything, she still does anything to help anyone – looks out for neighbours and bakes cakes if people are ill.” After 70 years of marriage, the couple’s love and respect for each other has stood the test of time. So what’s their advice for a lasting marriage? “We put it down to the fact we help each other as much as possible and always enjoy each other’s company.” “We also always finish the day by saying: ‘Good night, God bless, love you’,” says Kenneth.

anger Nell Dixon is inviting Sheffield school teachers and leaders of children’s groups to come down to the site of an old sewage works and landfill site to meet the wildlife that’s moved into the Shire Brook Valley Nature Reserve. “Children are so excited when they come here, they ask so many questions. One child found a caterpillar two inches long, and he couldn’t believe this bright green creature with a mohican haircut would grow up to be a pale tussock moth. I think the children who came that day will remember that moment for years to come.” Apart from its history as a rubbish dump, in the past the valley was also a hive of industry hosting several collieries and a tannery. Now Richard Pearson from the Shire Brook Valley Conservation Group finds the location much more idyllic, and often spends several days a week clearing brambles with his scythe or scattering wildflower seeds. “There’s such a variety of habitats here now, with ponds, streams, wildflower meadows and cattle on the fields of Linleybank, and it’s so
R
accessible. It’s smashing. I grew up near here, but we never came down as youngsters because it was just a sewage works then,” said Richard. Much of the valley, east of Sheffield, was designated as a nature reserve in 1999, and after years of pond building, tree planting, scrub clearing and meadow planting by the city council along with the Shire Brook Valley Conservation and Heritage Groups, the site now feels like countryside, said local ranger Tom Broadhead, with butterflies, bats, birds of prey and even grass snakes thriving in the woods and meadows. What people think of as a ‘natural’ environment rarely occurs naturally any more in England after centuries of human activity, Tom added. Woodland left to its own devices would become an impenetrable mix of native and introduced species and brambles, for example. “With the reduction of grazing animals like deer, you actually have to put a lot of work in to maintain what should be a natural environment,” said Tom.

Which is where volunteers like Richard Pearson come in. “I like getting stuck in,” Richard said. “Nothing happens quickly, but you can see the difference you make, and you don't have to spend hundreds of pounds, I can use my scythe and plant seeds I’ve collected myself, and basically do it for nothing.” He added that volunteering in a recreational area like Shire Brook is just as important a part of the ‘Outdoor City’ as running or cycling. “I can’t understand why people go to the gym when they could be out here volunteering and doing conservation work.” “A lot of people from this side of Sheffield drive out to the Peak District, when all this is within walking distance. But why drive out to somewhere miles away when you’ve got this on your doorstep?” said Tom Broadhead. “There are ponds right next to meadows right next to woods here,” said Nell Dixon. “There are dragonflies, freshwater shrimps, kestrels, and some awesome leeches. We want to get people to use this site more, and to realise what a beauty it really is.”

RHS CHATSWORTH FLOWER SHOW

Chelsea Flower Show just two weeks before. “It’s insane really because we’re at Chelsea too, so we’re putting ourselves under a lot of pressure to deliver it,” confirms Lee. “I’m the only garden designer in the country to be doing both shows, but I’m looking forward to bringing some high-quality horticulture to the north of England because the RHS has typically been southern-based.
“We’ve already got Harlow Carr in Harrogate, but now they’ve just unveiled the new RHS Garden Bridgewater, which will be open in a couple of years, so it’s moving north and it’s really exciting to have the opportunity to show people what possibilities there are. “I went to the Chatsworth Show for the first time last year and was amazed by the

The garden will be a celebration of the stately homes and gardens of Derbyshire, and with his business, Lee Bestall & Co being based on the grounds of the Renishaw estate, he and his team are perfectly placed to bring these elements into their work. “The design is very simple and based on an Italianate layout. The gardens of most big houses are quite formal, so I felt that it had to have that formality to it. “We’re bringing a statue from Renishaw. It’s a piece of 17th century artwork that they are loaning to us for the focal point and then we’re going to have lots of lovely herbaceous planting. It’s quite colourful. It will look quite modern, so we’re not trying to replicate a piece of Derbyshire – you can go to any stately home to see that. “I’ll also be messing about with perspective because one of the things that happens when you go into Derbyshire is this change in your state of mind. People go to the countryside for no other reason than to
relax and change their personal inner state so the garden is about escaping to a place that will make you feel better, that is more peaceful and straight lines do that – well, they certainly do for me. “The garden [at Renishaw] has a small wall in it, which is a bit like a ha-ha, that’s almost like an infinity swimming pool. When you look over it, the view almost comes closer and the reason they put those in, was to allow cattle and sheep to graze the land, but not get into the garden. “So there’ll be a mini ha-ha in there and we’ve got some lovely rusty old estate fencing, some kind of native British trees – we’ve got three of those that are quite big, and then under those, we’ve got some cows. These cows are three different sizes, so again, we’re messing with the perspective.” The installation at Chatsworth will also be a nod to revolutionary Derbyshire figures such as Sir George Sitwell, who once lived at Renishaw, and the grand ideas that never came to be. It is said that when Sitwell looked out at the cows grazing in his garden in winter, he found them boring, so he commissioned several artists to try to paint them. However, the artists all gave up because
the cows wouldn’t stay still long enough. Lee is therefore using modern technology to make Sitwell’s vision come true, only using artificial cows. Having started preparing all these elements months ago, it’s an ambitious project, but one thing’s for sure, the show garden at Chatsworth is going to be a sight to behold. But don’t worry if you miss it – after the show, Lee and his team will be transferring the garden to a similar plot in the gardens at Renishaw. It’s been a rollercoaster career for Lee Bestall, who started helping his grandfather plant potatoes at the tender age of four, but whose gardening career only really took off in 2005 when he won a place on BBC’s Gardening School – the garden world’s answer to The Apprentice – but the Sheffieldbased designer says he wouldn’t change a thing. “I don’t regret anything that I’ve done. It’s made me who I am and has given me confidence. I got there in the end!” Visit the Experience Peak District & Derbyshire Garden designed by Lee Bestall at the RHS Chatsworth Flower Show between 7 and 11 June 2017.

TRAVEL
FROM ANCIENT HISTORY TO SUN-SOAKED BEACHES, RACHEL MARTIN SAVOURS AN EYE-OPENING TASTE OF THE WONDERS ISRAEL HAS TO OFFER. The Old City of Jerusalem with the dome of the Holy Sepulchre Church
SIMPLY UNFORGETABLE
TRAVEL
he question I’ve been asked most often, both before I left and since I’ve returned from my trip to Israel, is: “is it safe?” The truth is, for anyone who regularly reads or watches the news, Israel appears to be an awfully dangerous place, and, if you’re planning on visiting right now, the question will quite probably pop up. Let me begin by saying no one can really tell you about safety. In Israel (or anywhere else, for that matter) the situation can change suddenly, and tourists must always keep up to date with the latest travel alerts. I can, however, quite clearly recall floating in the Dead Sea, walking the streets of Jerusalem and bar-hopping in Tel Aviv way past nightfall, not giving my safety a second thought. Israel is not on the average travellers’ radar, and that’s not surprising, as it is definitely not your average travel destination. It may be a small country, but from city to desert, religion to religion, intense culture to untouched nature, Israel is a complicated land. And its complexities aren’t just political, but geographic and cultural, too. Be prepared to cope with every one of those extremes – I learned this quickly during my recent trip, which was far too short to get a full understanding of what a traveller can experience, but one that offered an eyeopening glimpse nonetheless. It’s almost impossible to classify any travel experience as the most memorable – each journey has its own special story. I can say, however, that Jerusalem is one of the most fascinating places I have ever visited, and if it’s not already on your bucket list, it should be.

‘Machane Yehuda is the perfect spot to feel Jerusalem’s ambience. The people, the smells, a cornucopia of traditional Middle Eastern street food: shawarma, falafel, tahini, freshly squeezed pomegranate juice and much, much more…’
The Old City is divided into four quarters: Muslim, Jewish, Armenian and Christian, all with different cultures, varying beliefs and traditions and all surrounded by the same wall (aka the Wailing Wall and known in Hebrew as Kotel). “The best way to discover them all is to get lost,” said our tour guide Motti Saar – a man whose adoration for his country made me fall instantly in love with Israel’s past and present. “Literally get lost – on purpose – and let the beautiful cobbledstoned streets and Via Dolorosa (the 14 stations of the ‘Way of the Cross’) reveal Jerusalem while you walk.” The most panoramic view of the city is from the top of the Mount of Olives, especially at dawn and dusk, when you can see the Dome of the Rock as it glows golden in the sunlight. And just a few minutes’ walk away lies the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, where some believe Jesus was crucified and buried. One could easily spend a day touring the holy sites, but be sure to step outside of the Old City, where you’ll find the Machane Yehuda – this is your opportunity to try some local delicacies and traditional foods from the many nationalities that make Jerusalem their home. Often referred to as ‘The Shuk’, Machane Yehuda is the perfect spot to feel Jerusalem’s ambience. The people, the smells, a cornucopia of traditional Middle Eastern street food: shawarma, falafel, tahini, freshly squeezed pomegranate juice and much, much more. Of course, as incredible a destination as this city is, there’s more to Israel than Jerusalem. Tel Aviv, nicknamed the Big Orange for

Stunning: the view from the ancient fortress of Masada
its 24-hour lifestyle reminiscent of the Big Apple, is a sun-bronzed strip of coastline where coffee, diverse nightlife and culinary innovation are the local obsession. You can easily spend your days laid out on a blissfully balmy beach and your nights dining and drinking along tree-lined Rothschild Boulevard. Tel Aviv also sits just up the coast from Jaffa, an ancient Arab seaport - probably the most historically important city in the Levant region, apart from Jerusalem. “Tell an Israeli you're heading to Jaffa for the first time and he'll insist you dine at Dr. Shakshuka.” Motti said, as we tucked into our starters of Tripolitan specialty salads and hummus. I knew why - this courtyard restaurant does the best version of shakshuka, the signature dish of Israel. A spicy yet comforting tomato stew, served here in a battered frying pan and topped with fried eggs – once you’ve tried it, you’ll find that you crave it long after. After discovering just some of what the North has to offer, we drove south to the Negev Desert, stopping briefly to see ancient cities off in the distance, including Mamshit, the ruins of the ancient Nabatean city of Memphis. Geologically speaking, the defining feature of the Negev is its many volcanic craters, the most famous of which is the Makhtesh Ramon Crater, Israel’s version of the Grand Canyon, and, consequently, the nearby town of Mitspe Ramon. To make the visit even more memorable, when presented with an opportunity to sand-

board, we were all in. Dror Bamidbar offers to teach you to ‘surf ’ the sand – after a couple of falls and face plants, I figured out how to slide down without hurting myself (think snowboarding but without all the heavy equipment), wrapping up the session with fragrant desert tea served on mats. A welcome indulgence after exhausting yourself schlepping up the dunes. The following day, we made our way to Sfinat Hamidbar, a Bedouin settlement in the heart of the Negev, heading towards the start

point for our one-hour camel ride. Nicknamed the ‘ships of the desert’, camels are funny (and entertainingly grumpy) things indeed. As it rose from its knees, I held on white-knuckled unitl we were up and trekking along a path through the desert wilderness, stopping for a view of Golda Park. Next on the agenda: hiking among strange rock formations and exploring one of the world’s earliest copper mines, Timna Park, before packing up the car once again and taking off for two days in Eilat. The turquoise-tinted waters of the Red Sea offer diving and swimming opportunities galore, and there are plenty of other attractions on offer, including an aquarium, tax-free shopping and an array of outdoor activities showcasing the spectacular local desert scenery. It is here that we discovered Israel’s ultimate hippie experience – Dolphin Reef. Located on a private beach, various activities are offered, including scuba diving, snorkelling with dolphins (a childhood dream of mine come true), kayaking and boating. Walk past all these entertaining activities, however, and up a bamboo-framed path, and this will lead you to the Relaxation Pools spa. We entered the private area – three large pools full of fresh, ocean and Dead Sea water next to each other – where a
TRAVEL masseuse met us with a friendly smile before floating us on our backs for a 30- minute therapy session, lowering our heads under water until our ears were submerged and treating us to soothing underwater music. After the therapy is complete, you can remain in the water, roam around the bar, or simply take a nap while overlooking the bordering Jordanian mountains – I opted for the latter. Our mission the next day was to venture east to the Dead Sea and Masada. Masada – ‘fortress’ in Hebrew – is an ancient fortification King Herod built for himself on top of an isolated plateau on the eastern edge of the Judean Desert. Since we only had a set amount of time, we decided to take the cable car instead of climbing the infamous Snake Path. While going up, all you see is desert for miles and miles around, and, once at the top, an incredible view greeted us. But the awesome landscape is not the only reason this place is so revered by Jews worldwide. Masada was, in fact, the last stand against the Roman Empire. When the Romans decided to attack Masada in the first century CE, the inhabitants decided they would not surrender, and rather than be enslaved, opted for mass suicide. After stopping to see the rooms that have been preserved there – you can actually see some of the original wall paintings, as the frescoes were created by applying the pigment to wet plaster so that it would soak into the wall – we headed to the lowest place on earth. As we drove towards the Dead Sea, I was astonished to see so many trees, since the water in the area is so salty. “This is due to Israeli agricultural developments around desalination of water, which allows us the ability to create oases in the desert wherever we want.” Motti explained. A trip to Israel is not complete without a float in the Dead Sea, particularly because many environmentalists believe its days are numbered due to global warming. And, while not classified as one of the Seven Wonders of the World, it is definitely a place for the record books. The Dead Sea definitely lives up to its name: there is no sign of life anywhere – no plants, no seaweed and no fish. I got to about waist-high and, as I slowly laid back, my legs bounced to the surface. I was floating – I know that’s what is supposed to happen, but what a surreal feeling to experience this in reality. Then there’s the surrounding Judean Desert itself. Probably one of the most majestic areas on this planet – and despite its proximity to the city of Jerusalem, it looks and feels like another world. My advice: take a jeep tour around the foot of Mount Sodom, which is one of the more exhilarating experiences. After an incredible six days, I returned home with my heart and belly full, anxiously awaiting the day I would once again lift a glass to life - “L’chaim”.
