TRAVEL
Great getaway PICTURESQUE CHESHIRE MAKES FOR A VERY RELAXING BREAK, WRITES HANNAH SANDERS. elaxing on plush leather seats, in front of the cast iron stove while enjoying a tipple – or two – was an ideal way to admire the rustic chandelier and array of violins balanced delicately on wooden beams along with a picture-perfect view of blooming-foliage and lush green fields, all making for a quintessentially British setting. The Vicarage Freehouse & Rooms is nestled in the picturesque Cheshire countryside, near the River Dane. With its rustic exterior and climbing ivy, it blends perfectly into its surroundings, creating the perfect British getaway. The hotel is run by Flat Cap Hotels and inside it’s spacious and well thought out with three comfortable lounges, contemporary outdoor dining area, games room as well as light and airy conservatory area and country house style restaurant. We didn’t want our stay to end. The hotel has six exquisite signatures rooms, each with its own quirky touch such as a large chess board, which as competitive people, we took full advantage of. With its shabby-chic décor, including checked cushions, a deep blue chest, vintage gold mirror and finished with a delicately painted ‘do not disturb’ sign hung on the door, the room lived up to expectations as luxurious retreat from home.
R
The bedrooms are well-designed with luxury bathrooms to match – ours came with a huge bath and a rainmaker shower, the perfect place to unwind and put on your glad rags before experiencing The Vicarage’s restaurant. They source their produce locally with a menu driven by the gardener’s foragers, farmers and suppliers of Cheshire, and we were blown away. Stand-out dishes included pan-seared prawns in chilli butter, Cornish crab with a chilli and lime jam, Vicarage burger and chocolate and strawberry brulée with pastry tuille. Service throughout was immaculate. The dining area was bustling all evening, and I immediately fell for the rustic décor. From a wall of antique mirrors, to fabric animals busts, riding hats, plush velvet seats and family crests hung on the wooden beams, I felt like I was Elizabeth Bennett enjoying a weekend away with Mr Darcy. After a restful night’s sleep in the comfiest of beds, a hearty breakfast in the conservatory was just what we needed before taking a tenminute drive to Knutsford to wander around the many independent shops, enjoying the cobbled streets and brightly painted facades, before lunch at another of the family-run group’s hotels – The Courthouse. The former Crown Court has been converted into the Barristers Restaurant and
Rooftop Gardens, and the refurbishment emulates the building’s history and grandeurstyle. Sitting where the judge used to reside, looking down on the defendant – now the fully-stocked bar framed with towering plants – was a fun experience whilst we enjoyed a luxurious lunch. Stand-out dishes included Atlantic prawn and avocado sandwich, chocolate tart with caramel gel and Tatin with pineapple and caramelised puff pastry. Service was outstanding and we were treated to a tour of the grand building. The lush surroundings of The Vicarage make for the perfect place to unwind and enjoy a peaceful and memorable weekend away, whilst enjoying the close-by historic town of Knutsford with its iconic Gaskell Tower.

EATING OUT
Wild about the Boar… RACHEL MARTIN IS BOWLED OVER BY THE NEW MENU AT THE SITWELL ARMS HOTEL. p until the last year or so, Renishaw was an area I rarely, if not ever ventured to - especially if food was involved. But after I discovered the Wild Boar Restaurant at the Sitwell Arms Hotel, and its talented executive chef, Daniel Nutt, I fell immediately in love. Now, as part of a £25,000 investment, the Wild Boar Restaurant has launched a new à la carte menu, crafted by Daniel and managing director Jo-Anne Oldfield, and given my love for the place, I couldn’t wait to see what’s changed, and, more importantly, if it was all for the better.
U
If ever there were a dish to make you want to curl up and relax, warm and cosy by the fire, my partner’s bowl of soup was it. 10 Image | www.imagemagazine.co.uk
Comfortably ensconced in the dining room, we were greeted by a basket of home-baked bread, swiftly followed by the arrival of our starters: a teeming bowl of butternut squash and sweet potato soup (£4.45) and king scallops (£8.50). If ever there were a dish to make you want to curl up and relax, warm and cosy by the fire, my partner’s bowl of soup was it. Delightfully light and creamy, it provided a fantastic contrast to the earthy taste and texture of the accompanying white bloomer. Better still was the king scallops pan-seared in clarified butter, sweet carrot puree and
warm pea salad. The scallops were cooked to absolute perfection, all the textures a pleasurable whirlwind in the mouth, and the flavours again were fantastic – sweet, sour and a little salty. My partner’s main of best end of lamb, confit shoulder, red currant jus, Provençale vegetables, wilted spinach and rosemary sautéed potatoes was exactly how it sounded on the menu – utter heaven. And again, the cooking of everything was perfect, and the flavours all complemented one another. Seafood fans are in great hands too; my fillet of Scottish salmon (£20.95) was beautifully tender and a great combination with the creamy mashed potato and brocolli florets. Along with the white wine, mussel and prawn sauce, it was the balance of heroic coastal flavours that made this dish exceptional. For dessert we shared a plate of perfectly presented strawberry and prosecco cheesecake (£5.45), classic salted caramel brownie (£5.95) and two large glasses of pinot grigio primi soli (£6.25). The cheesecake was lavished with crème Anglaise and whipped vanilla cream, and, despite being full from our generous mains, it managed to feel light, but with all the satisfying sugariness. And the brownie didn’t disappoint either – the bitterness of the accompanying clotted cream ice cream cutting into the sweetness perfectly. I still can’t quite decide if I prefer the new

menu compared to the original, as both are simply very different, but what can’t be denied is that we still adore the Wild Boar Restaurant, and that Daniel Nutt is one very talented and accomplished chef who knows how flavours really work together. I would certainly recommend if you're a local to try it for yourself. Christmas menus are out and the Sitwell Arms recommends booking now to avoid disappointment. AT A GLANCE... * New à la carte menu * Heroic costal flavours * Satisfying sugariness
Jo-Anne Oldfield, managing director of The Sitwell Arms Hotel in Renishaw, has received official confirmation that the UK’s new high- speed rail network will skirt to the east of the the hotel’s 10-acre site, saving it from the bulldozer. The correspondence from the Department for Transport ends many months of uncertainty for the family, especially Jo-Anne’s parents John and Gloria Selby, who bought The Sitwell in 2000 and continue to play a hands-on role in the running of the business. For almost two decades the family has worked hard to build a sustainable business. Jo-Anne began working at the Sitwell as a waitress aged 14 alongside all three of her sisters. Today, Bex runs the salon and Tracy works on reception, while Samantha lives in London and works in education. Jo-Anne said: “My family had humble beginnings. Our first home was a caravan in Marsh Lane, Eckington. My dad was ambitious and he worked really hard, setting up a construction company, which enabled him and my mum to buy a house in time for my sisters and me. “We’re a very close family and I’m proud of what we have achieved together. Now, with HS2 behind us and the refurbishment under way, we are looking forward to a bright future for us and for The Sitwell.” The family is forging ahead with plans to invest in the property, a former 18th century coaching inn. Phase one is the £25,000 refurbishment of the restaurant and cocktail bar. The carpets, table linen and staff uniforms have been replaced, the area has been fully redecorated and staff have undergone a programme of training and development to ensure service is consistently first class. There is a new cocktail and gin bar to introduce a dash of oldfashioned theatre to the dining experience, and a new à la carte menu utilising fresh, local ingredients has been developed by Jo-Anne and executive chef Daniel Nutt. The menu is inspired by classic French cooking and Mediterranean cuisine and includes traditional dishes such as Chateaubriand and filet de boeuf en croute. It is complemented by an expertly curated wine list, including a selection from the vineyard at nearby Renishaw Hall. Phase two will involve an upgrade to the accommodation in early 2018. Jo-Anne said: “Word got round that we were on the route of HS2 and naturally this
put people off making advance bookings. This particularly affected our order book for weddings as couples plan one, two, even three, years ahead. “It has not been easy and we’ve worked hard to survive. However, I am delighted to say we are here to stay – that’s official, and not only that but we are investing and will continue to do so to ensure our guests have the most wonderful experience possible.”

The cafe provides a friendly environment for those living with dementia
Ruth Bartles and her mum, who bakes the cakes and helps out in the cafe.
A NEW CAFÉ IS HELPING FAMILIES LIVING WITH DEMENTIA TO COME TO TERMS WITH THE CONDITION. HANNAH SANDERS REPORTS.
Defying dementia heffield’s first permanent café supporting the dementia community proudly opened its doors this August. Founded by Ruth Bartles, Remember when is the first of its kind and provides a safe, helpful and encouraging environment to people living with dementia and those who care for them. The café situated at the Frecheville Community Sports and Social Ground offers healthy homemade food, is a great place to socialise providing laughter and stimulation, but most importantly a lifeline to those in the community suffering from dementia. “I’m delighted to be able to open the café in the area I spent most of my youth, and where I still live now. I wanted to offer the community a safe and friendly environment where anyone can come, regardless of age, background or ability and enjoy a cup of tea and slice of cake without feeling uncomfortable,” said Ruth. “Many places don’t lend to the relaxing environment that people, particularly those with dementia need. We wanted Remember when to offer an environment that wouldn’t feel foreign to them, but rather an extension of their own home.” The menu is focused around fresh, heathy

homemade food including salads, quiche, soups and specials including macaroni cheese and Spanish stew. Visitors can take advantage of the outdoor seating area, enjoying the views across the Shirebrook Valley Nature Reserve, along with taking part in the activities at the café Ruth regularly organises. “The atmosphere and surroundings help encourage memories and conversation. We have a memory wall where people can add pictures of someone living or has lived with dementia, along with pictures of visitors to the café – perfect for looking at while you enjoy a coffee and cake.” “We also play music, have a rummage box of small old objects, photo books, old
newspapers and a TV screen that shows old films and photographs,” adds Ruth. Ruth also provides discreet information on dementia, explaining the support available for those living with it, carers and families. She has also made sure that nothing in the café points towards dementia as many people don’t know they are living with it, but is on hand if anyone needs support. “The opening of Remember when went extremely well. Around 80 guest attending, all of whom had helped me throughout the process by either crowdfunding, PR or DIY along with those who have just been my pillars of support. The Lord Mayor even came and officially opened the café.” “Our staff are patient, kind and love being able to make a difference within their community. We’ve had some wonderful feedback from previous pop-up café’s we’ve hosted and I am over the moon to now have a permanent venue for our customers to call home.”
Remember when... is open Monday to Friday 9am to 4.30pm and Saturday 9am to 12pm. For more information on the café or to view their menu visit www.rememberwhen.online

Prepare your home for winter FOLLOW THESE SIMPLE TIPS TO HELP GET YOUR HOME READY FOR THE WINTER. BY PHOEBE SEYMOUR. y now you will be more than familiar with the Swedish lifestyle trend, hygge. But now a new concept is sweeping the world – and it’s another Swedish export. Lagom is the art of living a balanced life, and a huge part of this means being eco-friendly. This may not sound very exciting, but as energy prices continue to rise and the temperature starts to drop, it’s a wise time to make your home more energy efficient. So why not Lagomify and prepare your home for winter? Read on to find out how small changes can make a big difference.
B

CHECK YOUR PIPES
Burst pipes are a common issue in winter due to rapid freezing and thawing and can potentially cause a lot of damage. To stop this from happening, keep your pipes warm with their own foam coating (lagging), which will reduce heat loss and insulate the pipes so they don’t freeze. SERVICE YOUR BOILER
A poorly maintained boiler wastes energy as well as money. It can also run the risk of leaking carbon monoxide. Either get your boiler serviced or change your old model for a condensing unit.
INSULATE YOUR LOFT It is believed that about a quarter of the heat in your house is lost through the roof, so having good loft and wall cavity insulation could keep your house warm and reduce energy usage. Typically, you can save at least £120 per year on your energy bills by having insulation installed, according to the Energy Saving Trust. If you’re worried about keeping the costs down, it might be worth looking into the grants and schemes provided by the government that subsidise insulation installation. INSPECT YOUR LOFT While you’re there, check for signs of damp, particularly in areas where the roof slope changes. Darker patches, water staining and white streaks of powdery residue could indicate that rainwater has been entering the roof space.
HOME & GARDEN
BLEED YOUR RADIATORS
Are your radiators colder at the top than they are at the bottom? This is because systems can occasionally get air in them, stopping the heat from circulating properly. Bleeding your radiator will release the air, allowing it to run more efficiently. STOP DRAUGHTS
Those chilly winter breezes can sneak up on you and slip through the nooks and crannies of your home. Check the edges of your doors and windows for draughts, and seal these gaps with self-adhesive draught strips or a draught excluder. KEEP YOUR HEATING LOW
Turning the heating off while you’re out could cause your pipes to freeze. To avoid this, keep the central heating on low when you leave the house, opening all internal doors. You can also avoid frozen pipes and tanks by keeping the hatch to your attic ajar. MAINTAIN YOUR FIREPLACE
If you rely on wood to stay warm, or just love the feel of a real fire, now’s the time to clean out last year’s ashes and stock up on new wood for the winter. Make sure you get your chimney cleaned once a year as well.
PREPARE FOR SNOW Don’t let a blizzard take you by surprise. Always have a fully-stocked emergency kit at hand and store at least three days’ worth of food and household supplies.
UNCLOG YOUR GUTTERS
As autumn draws to a close, gutters and drainpipes will start to fill with loose foliage. Once the blockage becomes too much, water will start to back up in the guttering and can leak into the roof and down the walls of your house. Make sure your gutters are completely free from grime and dirt to minimise water blockage. CHECK YOUR OUTDOOR LIGHTING
As the evenings start getting darker earlier, make sure your outside lights are working. Low-energy lightbulbs will mean they don’t cost much to leave on, or invest in energy efficient solar panel lights that only come on when the sun disappears. CHECK YOUR HOME INSURANCE
Winter is a popular time for making home insurance claims, with maintenance problems cropping up for many at this time for year. Hopefully you won’t need to make a claim, but just in case you do, check your home insurance policy is up to date. If you are ever in doubt about how to look after your home during the winter months, particularly when it comes to your heating, contact a specialist. Image | www.imagemagazine.co.uk 29

WHAT’S HAPPENING
Serving the Sheffield community for 135 years
White Hart regulars raise more than £11,000 for St Luke’s Customers at Sheffield pub the White Hart have raised more than £11,000 for St Luke’s Hospice. When new landlady Karine Cherrill took over at the popular Greenhill pub she decided that the tradition of fundraising for Sheffield’s only hospice should continue, especially as her mum had been a St Luke’s patient. Successful fundraisers so far this year have included the annual White Hart sponsored walk to Bakewell, a raffle and generous donations from customers, with a special evening of food and entertainment bringing the 2017 total to £1,337.69.
John Heath and Sons have been serving the Sheffield community for six generations, with Adam and Jason now leading the service. Over the past 135 years, John Heath and Sons has expanded, continuously adapting to meet the changing needs of the public, and is one of the oldest and largest family-run firm of funeral directors in the north of England. The team are always on hand to talk to families about the various services and different procedures offered, and if specific instructions are left, will follow them out with the upmost respect. Their service covers everything from flowers and transport, newspapers announcements, music choices along with catering on site in their Eckington branch. Nowadays many people wish to plan their own funeral in advance, sometimes paying for a future funeral plan at today’s prices. This can give people peace of mind, in the knowledge that they are relieving their family, or executors of a burden which would otherwise face them at your time of death. Everything is discussed in complete confidence, either at their offices or in the comfort of your own home. For any queries or for more information call 01246 433438.

CHRISTMAS
So why do we trot out the turkey? HANNAH SANDERS LOOKS AT CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS FROM AROUND THE WORLD. any people, if they were served something other than turkey on Christmas Day, would be shocked and stunned, as let’s face it, it’s a given during the festive season. As we sit down for Christmas dinner, you may wonder how the turkey, a bird native to the America became the centrepiece of our festive meal. Turkeys were introduced in Britain over 500 years ago, by a young traveller and Yorkshireman William Strickland, who, on his travels acquired six birds from American Indian traders, and in 1550 he was granted a coat of arms which included a “turkey-cock in his pride proper”. Before that, the choice of meat was either goose, boar head’s and even peacock- I don’t know about you, but turkey certainly sounds more appealing. Henry VIII was the first English King to enjoy turkey in the 16th century, although it took another 400 years before Edward VII made eating turkey fashionable at Christmas. Turkey is now a regular feature on a great majority of British Christmas tables, although it’s only gone mainstream over the last 60 years. However, believe it or not turkey isn’t a staple across the world, with other countries having a whole host of equally as special traditions.

Some countries celebrate Christmas on 7 January, with a whole host of customs that are different from Santa and his reindeers that we are familiar with. Iceland has not one but 13 Santa Clauses, with the first one descending down the mountain 13 days before, leaving treats in children’s shoes. Traditionally on Christmas Eve, they will enjoy ptarmigan – a bird from the grouse family. In Argentina, the main meal is eaten on Christmas Eve, with popular dishes including roasted pork, stuffed tomatoes, Christmas
Norway, Santa is called Julenissen, presents are exchanged on Christmas Eve, and instead of mince pies, rice pudding is left out for Nisse (gnomes).
bread and desserts such as pan dulce and panetone. Over in Norway, Santa is called Julenissen, presents are exchanged on Christmas Eve, and instead of mince pies, rice pudding is left out for Nisse (gnomes). Many people will choose from either roasted pork ribs or dried mutton for their festive meal. As Christmas falls over summer in Australia, BBQ’s in the great outdoors are popular, rather than turkey and gravy. Australians also decorate their house with ‘Christmas Bush’, a native tree with small green leaves and cream coloured flowers and Santa gives his reindeers a well-deserved break, taking kangaroos on his present delivery. Across to Poland, where presents start arriving on 6 December as it’s St Nicholas Day. Unlike the UK, he dresses in white and gold rather than the red and white we are familiar with. On Christmas Eve, families traditionally enjoy 12 dishes including the country’s famous pierogi dumplings and oplatek – a Christmas wafer. So, there you have it – Christmas, its food and of course Santa comes in many different variations, each one as equally special and memorable as the next, and this year when you are sitting down to tuck into your much awaited turkey you’ll know the history behind it.

HALLOWEEN
HALLOWEEN TRADITIONS GO BACK THOUSANDS OF YEARS. PHOEBE SEYMOUR INVESTIGATES OUR ENDURING FASCINATION WITH THIS ANNUAL CELEBRATION OF ALL THINGS SPOOKY . . .
HALLOWEEN
here was a time, around 40 years ago, when you’d be struggling to find anyone trick or treating on your street. And if you did, they wouldn’t be particularly dressed up. If anything they’d be wearing a black bin bag, carrying a turnip jack-o’-lantern and rattling a tin of coins. How Halloween has changed… Nowadays, our American cousins’ influence can be seen everywhere. On the weeks leading up to Halloween, you’ll find mountains of pumpkins in the supermarkets and rail after rail of fancy dress costumes on the high street – some of which are not even scary. Travel back in time 2,000 years and the celebration of Halloween can be traced back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain. PreChristian Celts were agricultural people and were determined by the seasons. Samhain marked the harvest at the end of summer and the beginning of the darker and colder winter season, as well as symbolising a time when the boundary between the world of the living and the dead was at its thinnest. The Celts believed that on the night of 31 October, ghosts would visit the mortal world and large bonfires would be lit in every village to ward off any evil spirits that may also pass through. When the Romans invaded in the decades that followed, Britain was influenced by the Christian calendar. With the arrival of Saint Augustine from Rome in 597 came All Hallows’ Day, also known as All Saints Day, when people would remember those who had died for their beliefs. Originally celebrated on 13 May, Pope Gregory moved the All Hallows’ feast to 1 November in the 8th century. It is thought that in doing so, he was attempting to replace or merge the Celtic Samhain festival of the dead with a church-approved celebration. The night of Samhain therefore became known as All-hallows-even, before eventually being shortened to Hallowe’en, then finally to Halloween. Traditional games such as bobbing for apples and hollowing out vegetables for lanterns from the ancient celebration of Samhain still exist today, as does the idea of dressing up in scary costumes, but in recent years the American celebration of Halloween has also heavily influenced Britain. British immigrants may have taken their traditions over to America in the 19th century, but it was during the 20th century that the celebration changed shape again here. The current use of pumpkins in the UK is a relatively modern trend, which along with trick or treating and un-scary fancy dress, have been adopted from our US cousins. Although the UK still lags behind America when it comes to embracing the modern allsinging all-dancing celebration of Halloween, we are certainly catching up. Retail spending in the UK on Halloween was an astounding £310million in 2016 compared with just £12million in 2001. Goodbye black bin bags,
T
WEIRD HALLOWEEN FACTS You used to have to dance for your treat Based on the European tradition of ‘guysing’, costume-wearing beggars would perform a choreographed dance in fancy dress for treats. Later in America, poor men and boys would go door to door begging for money. This was stopped in the 1930s, but reemerged in the new form we know today.
You used to have to wear real animal heads and skins According to ancient Roman records, tribes
“Although the UK still lags behind America when it comes to embracing the modern all-singing all-dancing celebration of Halloween, we are certainly catching up. Retail spending in the UK on Halloween was an astounding £310 million in 2016 compared with just £12million in 2001.”
located in what is now Germany and France, traditionally wore costumes of animal heads and skins to connect to spirits of the dead. This tradition continued into the Celtic celebrations of Samhain. The leader of the Samhain parades wore a white sheet and carried a wooden horse head or decorated horse skull.
Halloween used to be a great day to find your soulmate In some parts of Ireland, people celebrated Halloween by playing romantic fortunetelling games. These games allegedly predicted who they’d marry and when. The Irish tradition was continued in America and according to the Oxford Encyclopedia of Food and Drink in America, bobbing for apples was another way of predicting future romances.
hello store-bought, hi-tech witch costume – or maybe just a friendly Spongebob costume. There’s nothing wrong with Halloween celebrations getting bigger. On the contrary, it’s great that this celebration has survived so many years, but when 31 October is just a glorified costume party without the scary element. And when sugar-fuelled children have tantrums on strangers’ doorsteps because they can only offer a few coppers or a digestive, or don’t answer the door at all, we have lost sight of what Halloween is all about. It shouldn’t be about scaring people into hiding or stocking up on sweets to appease the trick or treaters, it should be an inclusive celebration of our agricultural and spooky heritage. So by all means, carve up some vegetables, tell ghost stories. Just don’t get upset with those who would rather not spend their month’s wages on party decorations. After all, it’s not as big a deal as Christmas. Well, not yet anyway. Image | www.imagemagazine.co.uk 41

Your community needs you! ROGER BIRD IS A LOCAL BUILDER WITH A BIG HEART, ORGANISING A DIY SOS-STYLE BUILD TO HELP RECENTLY PARALYSED LESLEY FLINT. WITH CONTRACTORS ALREADY DONATING THEIR PRODUCTS AND SERVICES, HE JUST NEEDS TO RAISE THE VITAL FUNDS TO COMPLETE THE WORK – CAN YOU HELP? aving struggled with a bad back since 2015, Lesley Flint was diagnosed with Spinal Stenosis, and, in February 2016, she was told she needed a lumbar disk removing. Following a routine operation, the pain continued to get worse, and, in August 2016 another scan showed Lesley was suffering with a thoracic disk, which was almost cutting through the nerves in her spine. Lesley underwent a complex operation to remove the disk, and was told she would be able to walk again within six months, but further complications led to Lesley remaining in hospital until the end of January 2017, and in the run up to Christmas, she received the heart-breaking news that she would be paralysed from the waist down for the rest of her life. “It turned our lives upside down,” says Lesley, who lives in Inkersall, Chesterfield. “When you’re in hospital all you want to do is go home to your own bed, or sit in your own armchair. Then the realisation comes that you can’t do any of those things, and that you are going to go home, but you won’t be able to go upstairs. “Initially, we turned the dining room into a bedroom, and, as part of our plans to make living a bit easier, we wanted to turn it into a wet room, with just a small bedroom extension – which, with little financial support from the NHS or the council, was just about all we could afford.” Lesley now requires fulltime care, most of which is provided by her husband John, and a nursing visit every morning to help with bodily functions, as well as two carer visits each day. “Lesley has not had a shower at home for 11 months and is desperate to get an accessible wet room that enables her to be able to shower Builder Roger Bird and wash her hair at home,” says John.
H
“Currently, she has to visit Staveley Centre for a bath once a week, and she has no real privacy in her bedroom – we share the house with our daughter and her boyfriend and certain times of day he can’t walk through because Lesley is being taken care of.” When Roger Bird of GreenBird Properties heard the couple’s story, he knew he had to help, and, with the support of the local and wider community, he has pledged to transform the home in a DIY SOS-style makeover, at no cost. Around 70 contractors have offered products and services to help GreenBird with the build, and, with more than 200,000 people wanting to help, Roger has set up a JustGiving page. Although Roger has pledged to do the job at no cost to the couple, he doesn’t expect people to work for free, and believes £28,000 would help give Lesley and John an extension much more suited to the their needs, compared to the plans the budget originally allowed. “When I said I’d do it for free I meant no cost to Lesley and John, and I’ll not take anything out of it myself, but I don’t expect
other people to give up their wage, because they simply can’t afford it,” he says. “I can’t put a solid plan in place right now, because the funds will allow us to do so much, and we haven’t raised all the money yet. “If someone gave us a pot of money and told us to build what is best for Lesley and John, we’d cancel the original plans and get a new set of drawings. It’s a question of whether we can raise the money to do what I want to do, which is take the extension to the end of the house, make the building more accessible, and, most importantly, do the job properly.” National firms such as Build Base have already pledged to supply materials for the build, and a number of contractors have offered to provide services. To help raise funds, Roger is hoping to find support from larger corporations, and has contacted a national bank to ask for help. He’s also hoping the local community will pledge support. If you would like to back GreenBird Properties and help build a better home for Lesley and John, you can pledge your support at www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/roger-bird or contact the firm on: 0114 289 1830.

TRAVEL
Join the Crewe HISTORIC NORTHUMBERLAND HAS PLENTY TO OFFER, WRITES PHOEBE SEYMOUR – PERFECT FOR A SHORT STOPOVER. at next to a huge fireplace, surrounded by stone walls and a wooden beamed ceiling, sipping ale from tankards, this could easily be an iconic scene from Game of Thrones. But we were not at Castle Black on the icy northern border of a fictional land, we were at Lord Crewe Arms, on the border of Northumberland. Built in 1165, this hotel was originally part of Blanchland Abbey, home to the White Canons of the Roman Catholic Order. These monks famously dressed in white and as blanche is French for white, the village became known as Blanchland. This building was originally the Abbot’s lodge, guest house, kitchens and dining room, and the gardens served as cloisters for the monks of the Northumbrian moors. The abbey was dissolved in 1539 and was bought by the Radcliffes, then the Forster family, before being taken over by Lord Nathaniel Crewe in 1708. And if you like a good ghost story, they say Dorothy Forster still walks the abbey to this day. Back in the land of the living, hotel guests and visitors alike can enjoy the Lord Crewe Arms’ Crypt Bar, the cosy adjoining Derwent room, or sit next to the afore mentioned grand fireplace – just the thing in these colder months. Upstairs is the more formal Bishops dining room, but you can eat in the casual

surroundings of the lower fireplace room if you wish. The evening we arrived, my partner enjoyed an Isle of Wight salad with Langley Farm cottage cheese to start and a juicy flat iron steak for his main, while I had chilled, white gazpacho, followed by tender roast suckling pig porchetta with whipped polenta and spinach. Back in our room, I relished the chance to dip into the deep bathtub and cosy up to the wood burner with a cup of tea, before settling into a sumptuous double bed. The next morning we gazed out of the dining room window at the gorgeous gardens, whilst eating breakfast. I had eggs royale with salmon that had been smoked and cured on the premises. The hotel is also proud to grow its own vegetables and has a biomass shed to generate its own energy. And it’s not just a great place for a leisurely stay. There are also brilliant facilities in the adjoining Gatehouse for business conferences, containing a meeting room, sitting room and kitchen. Once we had checked out, the receptionist suggested several walks, but the bottom line was, “Whichever direction you walk in, you’ll get to the North Pennines!” With Derwent Reservoir just a couple of country miles up the road, the Crewe is wellplaced for sailing and water sports, as well as cycling, fishing and shooting. It’s also a great base for day trips to the Beamish Museum

and Hadrian’s Wall, or even for a shopping trip to Newcastle. On our walk, we came across a chicken crossing the road – a sign we were truly in the country, and the ruins of the old Shildon Engine House – a symbol of the area’s industrial past. Back in the village, we perused the traditional sweets and the homemade cards and gifts at a local shop, before going to the Monk Tearoom, an old school room-turnedcafé, for a pot of tea before returning home. So if you want to feel like the king of the castle, venture over the North Pennines or explore the nearby museums, Lord Crewe Arms in Blanchland is a cosy and comfortable home from home. What’s more, they have been named ‘Inn of the Year 2018’ by the Good Pub Guide.

Open season
The spectacular scenery of Royal Portrush Golf Course
NORTHERN IRELAND REMAINS LARGELY UNDISCOVERED FOR HOLIDAY GOLFERS – BUT THAT’S ALL ABOUT TO CHANGE, WRITES JOHN MURPHY. olf clubs all over the world have something in common when it comes to parking arrangements. It’s not surprising nor illogical: officials of the club, whether they be board members, captains or presidents have allocated parking bays in the club car park. Normally small plaques in the club’s livery reserve the parking space with the words: “Secretary”, “Captain” clearly displayed. In 2012 I had the pleasure and privilege to visit Royal Portrush Golf Club in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. As our car turned into the car park we saw the various reserved bays. At the end, near the clubhouse there was one highly unusual and remarkably different reserved space: the plaque merely stated: “Open Champion.” Remember, Royal Portrush is the home to one of Northern Ireland’s heroes: the genial Darren Clarke, former Ryder Cup Captain, and this was the year after he had conquered the elements at Royal St. George’s to claim the Claret Jug. The plaque said a lot about the club, its membership and the people we met in the province. Classy, understated but possessing of a fierce pride in what their sons and daughters have achieved on the world stage. In fact Northern Ireland has a wealth of riches in the golfing department: Darren Clarke, Rory Mcllory and Graeme McDowell bestride the game like the legendary giants

who in folklore built the nearby Giants Causeway. So how is it that the origins of these greats are concentrated in such a small area? The answer may be obvious: their golfing education was forged in this hotbed of golfing tradition and heritage where some of the world’s best courses are shoe-horned on to a rugged and breathtakingly beautiful peninsular. The elements take no prisoners in this part of the world and Darren Clarke’s victory in 2011 will always be remembered for his ability to play crunching long irons into a ferocious wind that was the hallmark of the Open that year. A skill no doubt honed at his home club and at the nearby links courses of Portstewart, Castlerock and Ballycastle. It’s no wonder that the “Welcome to Portrush” sign proclaims that it is the “Major Golf Capital of the World “ – a wonderfully Irish play on words as the sign lists its two Open winners (Fred Daly 1947 and Darren Clarke) and its US Open winner Graeme McDowell (2010). This part of the world is now very much in the golfing focus with Portstewart having staged the Irish Open this year, won by the Spaniard Jon Rahm, and the Open coming to Royal Portrush in 2019. The decision to choose Portrush was highly significant, the club being the only one outside England and Scotland selected to host the famous event, and it last did so nearly 70 years ago in 1951.

Portstewart Golf Course
I was lucky enough to be able to return to Portrush earlier this year as part of a visit by journalists to assess progress towards the Open in two years’ time. The Open Champion plaque may have gone but the glorious scenery and majesty of Portrush were still gleaming in the watery sun. A vast expanse of green beyond and around the clubhouse awaits the visitor, not dissimilar to the initial view of St Andrews. A concrete starting hut frames the first tee and in the stillness of an early Irish morning it’s difficult to imagine the cacophony that will greet the world’s finest stroke-makers in two years’ time. The course is hailed by many (including this humble hacker) as the best they have played on. Every hole is memorable and the scenery simply stunning. It would be a pleasure to just walk the course without touching a club. The views across thundering seas and sheer cliffs are mesmerising. The Championship Dunluce Course, originally designed by the same Harry Colt responsible for the Hallamshire course in Sheffield, is undergoing major changes in advance of the Open, most notably the moving of two holes from the Valley Course to make new seventh and eighth holes and the removal of existing holes 17 and 18. An underground tunnel is also being built to manage player and spectator traffic around the course. Despite the ongoing course work, our round was as enjoyable as the one five years ago. The hole that lingers longest in the memory is the fifth, White Rocks, with its green perched on the edge of cliffs with a sheer drop to the beach below. Long hitters can take on driving the green on this dog-leg downhill par 4, despite being just over 400
yards long, by angling a shot right of the fairway, between a menacing sand dune and a ravine of brambles and weeds. My crowd, with the exception of our one-handicapper maestro, were tempted until raw fear on top of the gusty tee gripped us and intimidated us into yellow-livered shots. The sense of intimidation merely increases when you’re on the next tee. An uphill par 3 of 191 yards off the Championship tees, with a ravine cutting in from the right and normally into the wind. The driver’s ball flight and length resembled a nine iron’s. It’s no wonder that they’re making absolutely no changes to this monstrous hole for the Open. Just down the round from Portrush is the impressive Portstewart club, comprising the Strand and the Riverside Courses. The Strand has all the traits of a true Irish links with mounded fairways set tight into the dunes and lightning fast, undulating greens framed by that stunning scenery of grass, sea and sky. Ironically and with no diminishing of the rest of the course, the first hole is the standout one. Widely acknowledged as the finest opening hole in Ireland, perhaps Europe, you are challenged to drive from an elevated tee down between two dunes that frame a narrow fairway which sweeps away to a duneprotected green on the right. In my experience golfers rarely consider Northern Ireland as a destination. These two courses plus other notable ones, such as Ballyliffin, just over the border in Donegal prove what a mistake that is. Try and play them before they become even more well known in two years’ time, when just maybe a sprinkling of Irish magic will mean a car park space being reserved once again for one of the Province’s famous sons.

Rare additions Following the Vanquish Zagato Coupe and Volante last year, Aston Martin has rounded up the ultra rare Zagato series with the Zagato Speedster and Shooting Brake. Possibly the prettiest looking cars ever created (that’s open to interpretation), the Vanquish Zagato is one of the rarest cars ever made with just 325 cars built worldwide. The Zagato Speedster is a roofless work of art with speed humps which rise up to form streamlined cowls that flow back from the seats. The Shooting Brake is a strict two-seater, but one conceived as an individual and exceptionally practical GT. Its extended roofline will certainly be an eye-catching sight on the road. All are powered by a 6.0-litre naturally aspirated V12. Expect to see them on the road in 2018.
