McKenzie Meats Halfway opened its doors on 14 July and managing director Danny, with the help of his business partners Michael and Connor, couldn’t be happier with the response from the local community. Michael is his brother and Connor is his cousin, making the store the latest family business to launch in the area. “There’s a real gap in the market for quality meat and home-cooked meat pies,” says Danny. “We feel as though our business model is unique, with a fantastic proposition and we have very ambitious growth plans for the future. By the end of this month, we will have opened three stores and a bakery, and are looking at opening around three shops a year for the next five years. “Twenty years ago, there were 30,000 butcher businesses in the UK. That has now dwindled to less than 7,000. Our aim is to re-establish the independent butcher and baker in towns and villages in Yorkshire and Lincolnshire. There’s an opening there, and we’re excited about the journey it’s going to take us on.” Fresh meat packs are available at three prices; £2, £4 or £10. SHEFFIELD SPORTS CENTRES GO FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH. ork began in April 2015 to transform the former Graves Tennis and Leisure Centre into the £16m state-of-the-art health facility. Funding was provided by Sheffield City Council, Sport England, Lawn Tennis Association (LTA), British Gymnastics, National Centre of Sport and Exercise Medicine (NCSEM), Public Health England and Places for People Leisure. In the past 12 months, customers at Graves Health and Sports Centre have taken part in activities over 471,000 times. Whether that’s going for a swim, using the gym, attending a fitness class, playing tennis or taking part in a coached activity such as gymnastics or trampolining. With over 3,500 fitness members, Graves has made quite an impact in the local community offering a wide range of activities for people to get active, come together and improve their health. Councillor Mary Lea, cabinet member for culture, parks and leisure at Sheffield City Council, said: “It’s fantastic to see that the new Graves Health and Sports Centre has been so popular and successful in its first year. “This is an absolutely first-class leisure centre for the south of Sheffield, bringing together swimming, gym and a huge range of sports facilities all under one roof. In addition, the centre is home to NHS services such as

physiotherapy and podiatry, in partnership with the National Centre for Sports and Exercise Medicine, meaning people can benefit from the very best treatment in the heart of their community. “I hope that people who haven’t visited yet will make the most of the free fitness activities taking place in September, and take this opportunity to experience the Graves Health and Sports Centre for themselves.” Health and wellbeing plays a huge part of Graves Health and Sports Centre as it is also houses the NCSEM, which provides patients with activity advice to support long-term treatment outcomes. The NCSEM work closely with local GP practices, universities and hospitals in Sheffield. At the heart of the project is Move More, a city-wide public health programme, which aims to put physical activity back into daily life through changing the environments including communities, schools, workplaces and transport infrastructure. Many children are enjoying the opportunity to learn a new sport at Graves. Thanks to the benefit of having a main and additional teaching pool, 1,000 children are learning to swim every week. Over 900 children are discovering the joys of gymnastics and trampolining in a facility designed by British Gymnastics, where many
are taught by Olympic medallist, Bryony Page. A further 400 children are learning to play tennis across eight indoor and eight outdoor tennis courts. Sheffield contract manager Alex Greaves says: “We’re overwhelmed by the success of Graves Health and Sports Centre. We’ve had a fantastic year and I would like to thank all our loyal customers and staff members. “We have built fantastic relationships with Sheffield City Council, NCSEM, Sport England, LTA and British Gymnastics. Places for People Leisure will continue to work closely with our partners to help make Sheffield the most active city by 2020.” Graves have hosted many events in the past 12 months including the Davis Cup Tennis Trophy Tour, ITF Wheelchair Tennis Tournament, Zoggs Oceans of Fun, The Great Britain Special Olympics, plus five free open tennis days for children over five. Other achievements include raising over £5,000 for the British Heart Foundation and hosting community support days for Dementia and the British Lung Foundation.

Bodyscene Health & Leisure Club raises more than £1,700 for Macmillan and Bluebell Wood Hospice As part of the ‘shape up for summer’ campaign at Bodyscene Health and Leisure Club based at Hellaby Hall Hotel, Rotherham, the team held a charity Bikeathon on August 8. Staff and members, including boxer Johnny Nelson took part, with two bikes being continuously in use for 12 hours. A Macmillan coffee morning with cakes supplied by members to contribute to the fundraising efforts, as well as a raffle with prizes donated by local businesses. Alex Carratt, General Manager of Bodyscene said “The event was a fantastic success and wished to thank the local community for their support for two very worthy local charities” Overall they raised an impressive £1757 for Macmillan and Bluebell Wood Hospice.
A year of success for Graves sports centre Friday 1 September marked the first anniversary of the new Graves Health and Sports Centre. Work began in April 2015 to transform the former Graves Tennis and Leisure Centre into the £16m state-of-the-art health facility. Funding was provided by Sheffield City Council, Sport England, Lawn Tennis Association (LTA), British Gymnastics, National Centre of Sport and Exercise Medicine (NCSEM), Public Health England and Places for People Leisure. With over 3,500 fitness members, Graves has made quite an impact in the local community offering a wide range of activities for people to get active, come together and improve their health. A new era for popular theatre community theatre group The curtain is rising on a new era of drama, music and comedy for one of South Yorkshire’s best loved and longest running community theatre groups. Wales Methodist Church Pantomime Players was launched in 1944 by the then 15-year-old Roy Staniforth with a production of a panto version of Robinson Crusoe. Over the decades that followed the society grew from its small origins at Wales Methodist Church and the demands of an ever-growing audience and cast - led eventually to its moving performances to the Montgomery Theatre in Sheffield city centre, where the group still performs today. Out of that original society also grew the Wales Musical Theatre Company, which specialised in staging extravagant concert style show, and now the two sides of his theatrical legacy are coming together as Wales Community Theatre Players. Following the move, the new Wales Community Theatre Players are progressing with plans to obtain charitable status.
