WELLBEING
WELLBEING
Put your wellbeing first KEEP FIT, EAT WELL AND GET PLENTY OF SLEEP... STAYING HEALTHY IS EASIER THAN YOU THINK. t seems there is always conflicting information about how to look after your health and wellbeing, but which are facts and which are just fads? Keeping fit is simpler than you might think. Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need to run a marathon or drink nothing but green smoothies to feel the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. Here’s a few simple rules to follow to help you stay fit.
I
Rule #1: Make exercise a part of your daily routine Before you throw yourself into a gruelling exercise routine, you may want to check with your doctor that you are good to go, especially if you have any risk factors associated with heart disease (smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, or family history). Once you’ve been given the green light, it’s time to get moving. There are three types of exercise you need to aim for each week; aerobic exercise, weight training and stretching. These routines don’t have to be expensive or complicated. Examples of aerobic exercise include walking, jogging, swimming and dancing. If you don’t want to commit to a dance class, you’re sure to find plenty of videos on YouTube. Why not invite your friend out for a walk in the countryside? Then you will be able to socialise and benefit from some fresh air too. When it comes to weight training, you may want to join a gym to ensure you do it safely or buy some weights to use at home. Yoga and pilates are great ways to have a good stretch, and again if you don’t like any local classes, you’re sure to find videos on YouTube. Research the different types of yoga to find the one that feels right for you.
Rule #2: Eat a balanced diet
Rule #3: Get plenty of sleep
Crash diets are a no-no. You may lose weight or build up your muscles in the short term, but most of them are difficult to maintain and can damage your metabolism. A diet which balances all the major food groups is the way to go, and once you stop starving yourself, you’ll find you have far more fuel to exercise for longer. Whole grains, wheats and oats give you a slow release of energy. Opt for brown bread, pastas and rice, and try to cook sauce from scratch. There are often lots of hidden sugars and salts lurking in ready meals – even the ones that say they are low in fat. Check the back of the packet if you are unsure. Drink as much water as you can. Make it more interesting by squeezing in some lemon juice or invest in a fruit infuser water bottle, which has a separate chamber for fruit. Water has been proven time and time again to improve your complexion, increase energy and promote weight loss (is said to reduce hunger and raise your metabolism). Finally, reduce your intake of stimulants such as caffeine, tobacco and alcohol. Once your rid your body of these, you’ll find you have far more natural energy.
We live in a fast-paced world where sleep is often viewed as a weakness (Margaret Thatcher famously survived on just four hours sleep). But the NHS says we need around eight hours to function properly. Some of us need a little more, others a little less. We all know that a lack of sleep leaves us feeling grumpy and unable to concentrate, but the effects of sleep deprivation can be much worse. Regular poor sleep puts you at risk of serious medical conditions, including obesity, heart disease and diabetes – and it shortens your life expectancy. It’s therefore never been more important to get some shut-eye. If you find it difficult nodding off at night, try a herbal tea containing valerian roots, camomile and lavender. You could also try spraying lavender on your pillow or putting lavender oil on your pulse points. Reading may help, but stop using a back-lit gadget such as a smart phone or tablet an hour before bed. If you can’t resist looking at your phone last thing at night, check if your phone has a night shift setting (most of the newer iPhone and Android phones do). Here you can schedule your settings so your phone doesn’t emit blue light – the main sleep stealing culprit – after a certain time. Blue light is said to suppress the natural production of melatonin, which is essential for a normal sleep-wake cycle. Meditation or even gentle yoga before bed can help, but try to not to do any high-intensity exercise late at night as this can leave you feeling more awake rather than tiring you out.

PHYSIOTHERAPY
Way of the Warrior NEW HELP FOR PEOPLE WITH PARKINSON’S AS NEW EXERCISE PROGRAMME COMES TO SHEFFIELD AND BRAMALL LANE.
Surgery or rehabilitation? PHYSIOTHERAPY CAN OFTEN GET YOU BACK ON YOUR FEET WITHOUT RISKING THE COMPLICATIONS OF SURGERY. anet damaged her knee several years ago during a skiing holiday. This resolved and several years later whilst stepping over a stile she fell and twisted the same knee. After a couple of weeks hobbling around and applying ice to the swollen knee she started to improve. She was sent for a scan that showed that her anterior cruciate ligament (central knee ligament) had snapped. She wanted to avoid surgery as she worried about the possible complications such as infection, wound healing and the possible effects of the general anaesthetic. The surgeon said she needed surgery to repair the ligament. What should she do? This is a common scenario seen at Hallamshire Physiotherapy Clinic. The research suggests that a conservative approach is the best approach initially as most injuries resolve with strengthening and restoration of normal muscle control around the knee. If you don't improve after a year of the injury, then surgery may be an option. Understandably, Janet was confused and needed help making a decision. She received help from her GP who agreed that a conservative approach was sensible. From my experience, the willingness to go under the knife shown by members of the public is not seen in people who work in the health industry. Maybe they have a better understanding of the risk/benefits of surgery and will only consider an operation after extensive physiotherapy. Surgery can have amazing results, but doesn’t always have to be the first option. Recovery from surgery can be long and protracted and necessitate long periods off work or other activities. Janet avoided surgery and returned to full activities that included running and tennis. The knee just got stronger with use and progressive loading. It is amazing how the body can repair itself with time and correct physiotherapy. Come and get a second opinion at Hallamshire Physiotherapy Clinic.

D Warrior a unique programme of exercise to help people newly diagnosed with Parkinson’s is now in Sheffield. Two physiotherapists from the Hallamshire Physiotherapy Clinic, Karen Hodgson and Bhanu Ramaswamy, have become instructors in the PD Warrior concept and are now unique in the region for offering this programme Parkinson’s is a progressive neurological disorder that affects approximately 1 in every 500 people in the UK. The main symptoms of Parkinson's are tremor, rigidity and slowness of movement. Symptoms and the speed at which the condition develops will differ from one person to the next. Currently there is no cure for Parkinson’s but treatment is through medication and therapy including physiotherapy, speech and language therapy and occupational therapy. Traditional physiotherapy has been aimed at people who have had Parkinson’s for a length of time and is geared to treating the symptoms and ongoing problems. The PD Warrior programme has been developed in Australia by two physiotherapists, for people newly diagnosed with Parkinson’s. This concept uses an exercise philosophy designed to help slow Parkinson’s, based on the latest evidence that high intensity exercise, done early on after diagnosis is medicine. The proactive approach to exercise has been shown to improve quality of life. It is important not to wait for symptoms to impact on daily life before taking up the correct exercise at an early stage of Parkinson’s. PD Warrior is aimed at those people who have been diagnosed with Parkinson’s for three years or less, who are fit and active and who are highly motivated. The first group of Warriors have completed their initial ten week exercise plan and have achieved some good results. Due to the success of this the team are rolling the programme out with the help of Sheffield United Football Club. One of the first Sheffield Warriors is Billy McEwan, who will be known to many people as a former manager of Sheffield United from 1986-1988. Billy was diagnosed with Parkinson’s three years ago and has been working with the clinic team on the Warrior programme since October. Billy has noticed good improvements in his condition and so was keen to help get Sheffield United involved. The exercise classes started at Bramall Lane on 13 February 2017.

FASHION
Wear it well THERE’S NEVER BEEN A BETTER TIME TO FALL BACK IN LOVE WITH FASHION.
ou’ve probably asked this question at one point: “am I too old to wear that?” Age is a trivial matter, but midlife can pose unique fashion dilemmas – especially when skirt hemlines hit 21 inches, high-waisted ‘mom jeans’ abound and orange is the hot hue. Really, does anyone look good in orange? We often remember a time in our lives when we felt our most desirable, and that’s usually where our style clock stops. Are these boots still made for walking a la Nancy Sinatra or are we too old to wear any of the trends we lived through the first instalments of? Chances are you’re actually just as fashionsavvy today as you were back then. But just because the idea of age-appropriate dressing sounds quite boring, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t reinvent your style. The truth is, there’s never been a better time to fall back in love with fashion. How many times have you stared blankly into the abyss of your closet wondering how you can have so many clothes, yet still have nothing to wear? We’ve all been there, but don’t despair. What this usually means is that it’s time for a ‘wardrobe edit’. The problem is where to start? The first step is to let go of the past. Fashion has changed. It’s become a form of self-expression rather than a list of everchanging trends that need to be followed. Certain items provide the basis to a brilliant wardrobe, mainly because they’re so adaptable: they’ll work for a number occasions and outfits, so you’ll never feel you’ve ‘got nothing to wear’.
Y
Here are the five items no wardrobe should be without: A statement coat Pea coats suit taller women, while belted and Aline styles look great with curves. Choose something colourful, but don’t be tempted by white: you’ll never keep it clean. Colours that work with your complexion can make skin glow, soften lines and shadows and boost your mood. The perfect pair of jeans It’s important to own a pair of jeans that make you look and feel great. Choose dark washes, but steer clear of bleach and rips. Bootcut jeans offer a cool silhouette and waist control. Cashmere sweater Every woman should own a cashmere sweater for the days you just need to put something on and go. It works with absolutely everything – just add jewellery if you want to liven it up. Comfy shoes Comfy doesn’t have to mean ugly. You want shoes with proper support: nothing too flimsy, such as light, canvas shoes. Mannish styles are brilliant for older women – and they are everywhere on the high street. Try brogues, slipper-like styles or a penny loafer.
Two classic black dresses (one for winter and one for summer) Shorter hems are fine if you stick with opaque hosiery or leggings. If it’s a no-hosiery look, keep the hem at the middle of the knee. Keep in mind, when your hemline is below the knee, it’s important to have a tapered skirt to avoid looking matronly.
As we mature, so does our personal style and self-confidence. We finally know what looks good on us – and what doesn’t – and can very easily say no to the latest trend if it makes us look or feel silly or uncomfortable. Still, while we no longer want to look like we stepped out of a Vogue editorial, we also don’t want to carbon-date ourselves by wearing the exact same styles we’ve worn for the past decade or two. When you walk into a room you want people to see the updated, modern, confident you and not be distracted by all the bells and whistles of an era gone by. Midlife is no longer about preparing for your ‘golden years’, lining up your shawls and cardigans, but a springboard into an adventure and selfdiscovery. The key to evolving at any age is to always stay inspired and adventurous, because not only is the party never over, but it is just beginning. >
FASHION
FASHION
nce upon a time, the world of men’s fashion was seen by the masses as inferior to women’s trends. But in the 21st century, that attitude has changed rapidly. Today, men’s fashion is just as wellrespected as its female counterpart and older men haven’t been immune to its effects either. In fact, many major male style icons are aged over 50, like actors George Clooney, Bill Nighy and even Johnny Depp. So if you’re an older man hoping to inject some of this new fashion consciousness into your wardrobe, you can rest assured that you’ll find inspiration in many corners. It really becomes a question of maintenance: what is enough and what is too much? Below are a few guidelines that can help define the fine line between the two:
younger men and look for well-tailored, straight-legged trousers instead. Choose lighter colours like beige, blue and green for casualwear, or stick to black and grey for more formal office-wear.
The first step to revamping your wardrobe is to invest in some good quality, staple items. Start with bottoms: avoid the tight-fitting skinny jeans favoured by
Don’t neglect your casual clothes just because you’ve got it down with the work uniform. The weekend and casual arena is where most men show their age and fall by the wayside.
O
If you wear a suit every day, keep it up-todate (every five to ten years is not enough). You don’t have to sacrifice comfort to look current; so don’t get stuck in a rut. Men’s clothes are not a complete reinvention each season (like women’s), so looking modern does not require regular trips to the drawing board. Think clean and chic with your style. It’s ok to wear cool sneakers and a jacket, but stay away from t-shirts with numbers or letters. Remember, it’s about looking great, not necessarily young.
Get a great timeless-looking watch, a stylish and simple sleek belt and comfy socks in natural colours. Accessories are fantastic at adding extra style to plainer outfits, so make sure you spend a little extra on these items and they will last. Baseball caps, short shorts, sandals, vests, double denim... ditch all these instantly. Take a cold, hard look at your current wardrobe and assess how long ago you wore it, or ask a family member’s opinion on the look – prepare for honesty. While you can’t dress like a 20-year-old anymore – or at least you shouldn’t – you can still be stylish. If you can’t afford clothing from the big guns in men’s fashion, get inspired by their designs and find less expensive versions of similar styles. Most importantly, stay modern and avoid the traps of wearing the same clothing that dates you for years and years.

FUNERALS
Death – no longer a taboo? 2016 CERTAINLY TOOK ITS TOLL, WITH MANY OF OUR FAVOURITE STARS LEAVING US. THIS ACTS AS A REMINDER TO REFLECT ON OUR OWN MORTALITY. HERE HAWORTH WARDDRUMMOND OF ESTATE PLANNING SERVICES SHARES SOME INSIGHTS INTO THIS SUBJECT. s we move into 2017, there is still a stigma surrounding death, funerals and severe illnesses. Do we talk about it? If so, how much do we discuss? What can we ask? And when? Part of those wonderings is the increasing recognition that many of us want to start to plan ahead for life’s only inevitable expense. Increasingly these days, it seems that every time we turn on the TV to catch the morning headlines, somebody somewhere has been killed or seriously injured. The newspapers love nothing more than to report on a natural disaster, plane crash or terrorist plot; so why then is it that we still see death as being something we can’t talk about? Traditionally, death had a far more religious connotation than it does now and was seen, in many cultures, as the passing from one state to another (usually a better place) and, although it still remains very much at the forefront of our thoughts when loved ones pass, it seems that the religious element has declined over the last 30 or so years. Perhaps this is because there is a “new generation” of folk who rarely (if ever) appear to visit a dedicated place of worship and seem to be more interested in achieving higher scores on the latest Candy Crush Saga than visualising spiritual paths to take. Interestingly though, this same generation are finely tuned into the part that modern technology plays in their day to day lives and they have become savvier consumers as a result: Discounted insurances, better mortgage rates, cheaper
A
items for sale and so on. This doesn’t end when funerals are in need of arranging, as this generation are often left with dealing with the funeral arrangements for their parents, and often without any real knowledge of what those loved ones really wanted. Just five years ago, only fiver per cent of people would search online for a funeral director at the time of need. In 2017, it is expected that this figure will rise to almost 75 per cent... but what they are searching for may be of a surprise to some. The National Federation of Funeral Directors (NFFD) is a consumer facing trade association within today’s fast-changing funeral industry and it launched the funeral directors register to assist the people who are searching online. With over 30,000 unique visitors per month, the NFFD spend a lot of time researching how people find their free to use website and the results make interesting reading. One could easily be forgiven for assuming that key search words used when finding a funeral director online would be “local”, “traditional”, “quality” or “established”… but astonishingly, this is not the case. The number one key word searched for when looking for a funeral director was “CHEAP”!! Given this information, is it any wonder that there are so many “low cost” funeral directors setting up? Or why funeral directors in their hundreds are signing up to the NFFD’s Fair Price Charter?
The internet is now playing a pivotal role in breaking the ice when it comes to discussing death in all its wonder and mystery. Websites such as gonetoosoon.org, which allow you to memorialise your loved one digitally, have become increasingly the norm. It could be said that social media for the dead is as alive and kicking as it is for those of us still fortunate enough to be here. Whilst the traditional and very private emotional experience of death remains exactly that; private, the process of dealing with loss and grieving has become a much more public affair. Death, like everything else in life, has become much more acceptable, much less private, more openly talked about and indeed much more commercialised. This doesn’t mean you need to overpay when planning though, as independent, expert and fair advice can (and should) be sought on not only how to plan your funeral but also who to trust with your money. LEARNING
It’s never too late to learn EDUCATION IS A GREAT WAY TO LEARN SOMETHING YOU NEVER HAD THE TIME FOR, MEET NEW PEOPLE, ACQUIRE NEW SKILLS OR TO SIMPLY HAVE AN ACTIVE RETIREMENT. growing awareness of the value of lifelong learning, alongside efforts by organisations to widen access, has encouraged adults to return to education in increasing numbers. In fact, almost one in three undergraduates at UK universities is a mature student. From informal learning to languages and degree courses, there’s something to interest everyone, and there are also evening and weekend courses for those who want to keep working but are keen to learn new things in their spare time. Classes are not confined to evenings and weekends either, there are part-time, day, online and distance learning classes to choose from – ranging from photography, yoga and cookery, to computer skills, astronomy and family history. For those prepared to put in the research, further education can be a worthwhile investment, and though studying can sometimes be expensive, there may be concessions for older students – so make sure you ask. GOV.UK’s student finance calculator provides information on the financial help available to students in higher education in England, and many institutions also allow distance learning so you can study from home and save costs. For those unable to commit either the time or the funds to studying for a degree, short courses may be a better option. The Open University runs a number of short modules, costing from £150 upwards and some lasting just eight weeks. So as well as building up your
A
skills, these can also be an opportunity to dip your toe in the water. Have you thought about learning new skills or sharing new experiences without the pressure of qualifications? Then the University of the Third Age (U3A) could be for you. U3A is a nationwide network of learning groups aimed at encouraging people no longer in full-time employment to share their knowledge, skills and interests in a friendly environment. It is not a university in the conventional sense. There are no exams and no homework, just regular lessons or study groups of like-minded people with a shared interest in a particular subject. It’s learning for fun, not with a view to acquiring qualifications, and many groups evolve a strong social side, with trips and get-togethers outside the regular classes. Visit www.u3a.org.uk website for more information. Some adults relish the social aspect of joining a class when they return to learning, but for many others, use of a computer in the comfort of their own home is much more appealing. In the digital age, new technology is becoming an ever more important gateway to lifelong learning and studying online means you can work where and when you choose, away from the bustle and competition of the classroom. Education is a great way to learn something you never had the time for, meet new people, acquire new skills or to simply have an active retirement. It’s never too late to learn and there are lots of opportunities out there for you to try, many of them free of charge.
How to find a course: • Local libraries have details of local courses and computer facilities if you need them. • Your local council can give you details of courses for adult learners in your area. • Age UK coordinates a network of computer training centres providing jargonfree training tailored to people in later life. • Learn Direct has a network of local centres offering computer-based teaching. Their courses are mainly vocational skills, English, maths and business. • The University of the Third Age (U3A) consists of local groups of older people (in their ‘third age’) whose members run informal courses, study groups and talks. • The Complete University Guide provides a wealth of information on universities and courses. • Pioneers of home study, the Open University offers flexible part-time study, supported distance and open learning.

Discover iconic filming locations such as Glencoe in Scotland

UK Breaks
CRUISES
Renting a cottage in Scotland is the perfect idyllic break. This scenic destination offers tourists the chance to learn about the country’s complex but fascinating history, visit iconic filming locations including; Harry Potter at Loch Etlve, Glenfinnan (www.visitbritainshop.com shows you how to get there) and Skyfall, at Glencoe (www.visitscotland.com) or play a spot of golf at a world famous course such as, the Old Course in St Andrews. You can simply sit in a local pub with a good book and, for the more active, have a once in a lifetime experience of whale watching just off the coast (www.sealife-adventures.com). It’s the ideal holiday in the colder months, where you have the comfort of a warm fire and still the beauty of a crisp, frosty morning. If it’s a ‘girl’s only’ trip away try a spa break at Dormy House in the Cotswolds. This reinvented rustic country house contains a thermal suite, outdoor hot tub along with treatments that will make you feel brand new. It also has a Greenhouse Lounge, nail parlous and lavender sauna making it the perfect ladies pamper weekend (www.dormyhouse.co.uk).
Having the waves below, the sun above and two feet planted on an ocean cruise ship, is one of the most comfortable ways to see the world. Azamara club cruises (www.guideforseniors.com) do packages to North and South America, the Caribbean, Europe and Asia/Pacific. Azamara are wheelchair friendly and welcome service dogs. Also, they offer wine tasting and culinary classes. Oceania Cruises will appeal to art and food loving types who want to travel further afield with routes to Alaska, Canada and New England to just name a few. On board entertainment includes craft lessons, Latin art collections to browse, as well as culinary discovery tours which allow you to accompany the chef instructor, and see all the local markets at each port. Cruises offer the best of both worlds… the chance to relax on deck watching the incredible scenery pass you by, while at the same time can still be quite an active holiday if you wish it to be.

Escorted Tours
HOME EXCHANGE
Another great way to do a holiday is to book planned trips, meaning you get to see the world without having to worry about any aspect of your itinerary. Going to see the Northern Lights is something most people dream of doing and is worth visiting. With their unearthly colours and sounds in the night sky, they are a wonder to behold. You can catch a flight to the Abisko Mountain Station in Tromso, Norway and then up to the Aurora Sky Station where you can watch the phenomenon first hand. The trips also include chance to stay at an ice hotel and really gives you time to explore your surroundings (www.discovertheworld.com). Taking an eight-day tour around Italian Lakes is a stress-free holiday where you can see some beautiful scenery and take in a wealth of information from your guide (www.mailtravel.co.uk). All your flights are sorted, along with transport throughout the trip. The famous fairytale Rocca Scaligera Castle and Villa Carlotta are perfect for those of you with a love of photography. Escorted tours don’t mean that you don’t have any time for yourselves, in fact you probably have more as you don’t have to spend hours planning your itinerary each day. France is a country that knows how to live and is celebrated as one of the world’s number one wine producers. A tasting tour of the vineyards can be an extremely relaxing escorted tour. You could try the Bordeaux wine country tour, (www.legar.co.uk) which involves being picked up at home, travelling to the Loire Valley and Bordeaux, to the famous wine village of Saint-Emillion to cruising down the River Gironde and of course, stopping to sample the local wines on the way. Escorted tours aren’t for everybody but they do have a lot of benefits. For one they’re safe and comfortable as you’re with a group. You’ll have the luxury of airconditioned and spacious coaches, get to meet a lot of new people of similar ages and above all it’s a great way to gain a wealth of cultural knowledge about your chosen destination.
Most people think of sofa surfing when they think of home exchange, but it isn’t just for the backpackers. Home swapping is great for anyone as you aren’t tied down by time constraints and it’s a lot cheaper than booking hotels. You really can go anywhere you want including; beachside villas, city apartments or a country retreat. Instead of worrying whether the hotel is going to be decent, you have the added luxury of all the normal home amenities (www.homeexchange50plus.com). One of the benefits of home exchange is that you can really live like a local, gaining a different perspective to the country that you’re in. It’s also a fantastic way to make new friends with similar interests and does save you a lot of money if you’re on a budget. If you are planning on giving this a go, it’s a good idea to start looking about four to six months beforehand giving you time to get to know your exchange partners so you feel comfortable living in their house. >

Explore the wonders that Kenya has to offer on a SkySafari
Once in a lifetime trips When you have a bit more time on your hands it becomes a lot easier to enjoy the wonders of the world. Taking a trip down under is a must, with the only downside being the long journey time. Australia holds many wonders including; Sydney Opera House, Sydney Harbour and Bridge, the art gallery of New South Wales and the Powerhouse Museum. It’s easy enough to catch internal flights once you’re there and not even too expensive, meaning you can hop across to Melbourne. If you love camper vans, hire one and tackle part of the Great Ocean Road. Why not take a trip with SkySafari (www.skysafari.com) and explore the wonders that Kenya has to offer? SkySafari design their journeys around elegance and simplicity, meaning once you have chosen your package (the Kenya Connoisseur, Kenya Classic or Tanzania classic) then you can just sit back, relax and be taken on a journey of a lifetime through Africa’s magnificent landscapes. The Kenya Classic, which is an eight-day safari, captures the true essence of this county. You’ll go from the cosmopolitan city Nairobi, to the semi-arid grasslands of Amboseli, over to the romantic Meru and finally, to worldrenowned Masai Mara. SkySafari is one for the adventurous types as you discover the impressive backdrop of Mt Kilimanjaro, thunderous rivers, elephants herds and spend hours bird-watching some 500 species. For a once in a lifetime trip that isn’t as far away, then going to Israel is a must (www.israeltours.co). Take a ten-day tour which shows you the general sites of Israel as well as some religious ones. The tour begins in the Golden City of Jerusalem and they don’t fall short on things to show you throughout your ten days. From the tomb of King David, Mount Zion and the Western Wall, the sense of history and religious fervour make for an unforgettable holiday.
HOLIDAYS FOR THE INDEPENDENT GLOBE-TROTTER Globe-trotting isn’t just for the young backpacker anymore and no matter what age, there are lots of places to visit for the independent traveller. It’s said that all roads lead here, so if you haven’t already been then Rome should be your next stop. It’s a magnificent city that’s not only modern but still full of history. Rome is bursting with incredible architecture and art, from the Vatican, Trevi Fountain and Colosseum, this photogenic city should be on your list even if it is just for a long weekend. If you’re one for jet-setting, then grab your luggage and head to San Jose del Cabo. Located in Baja California, Mexico it’s known for sandy beaches and colonial buildings. With incredible breath-taking scenery, wild and unspoilt nature you can encounter the 200 species of birds that live in the San Jose Estuary and Bird Sanctuary. One of the most unforgettable experiences is seeing the magical event of whales meeting up in wildlife sanctuaries and lagoons. However if you need something a bit more sporty to keep you entertained, then you can scuba dive and kayak in Cabo Pulmo Marine Park, which also happens to be home to the Sea of Cortez’s only hard coral reef. RELATIONSHIPS
The perfect match WHETHER YOU ARE SINGLE OR ARE WANTING TO TAKE THE NEXT STEP WITH A NEW PARTNER, OUR GUIDE WILL TAKE YOU THROUGH THE EXCITING, SCARY AND WONDERFUL WORLD OF DATING. ating can sometimes feel daunting, especially when you have just been through a divorce or bereavement. But it doesn’t have to. From how to meet new people, to coping with a step family, we’ve compiled some of the best pieces of relationship advice.
Love after a bereavement
If at any point you realise you are not ready to get into a new relationship, it’s fine to change your mind. Keep talking it through with friends and family and give yourself some time. If you are struggling to move on, you can contact a bereavement counselling service such as Cruse (helpline 0844 477 940) and talk to someone in confidence.
online-dating (perfect if you’re busy at work or at home) and widen your social circle, whilst you get on with creating a lovely, fulfilling life for yourself.” Meeting new people should be fun, so get out there, join a group, pick up a new hobby or simply gather some friends together – who knows, they might know someone who could be the perfect match for you.
Love after a divorce
Psychiatrist and author of On Death & Dying, Elisabeth Kübler-Ross famously said there are five stages to dealing with bereavement; denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. There is no rush to get back into dating. But if you do feel ready, start by looking at potential partners’ profiles on social media and dating sites. “You could start by browsing profiles of people who you think might be suitable matches,” says dating website eHarmony. “If even this innocent activity makes you feel guilty or disloyal, then it may be that you have not fully accepted your loss yet. In the stages of grief, acceptance is the one which is usually the key to being able to move on and create a life with someone else.” Once you have reached a point of acceptance, talk through the prospect of dating with a family member or a friend who was close to your partner. This will give them a chance to come to terms with the change and give you the confidence to move forward. “You may find people are surprisingly supportive and encouraging and this can help you to move forward because you won’t be worried about upsetting other people,” continues eHarmony. “Sometimes widowed people don’t tell relatives until after they have already met a prospective new partner and then get hurt and upset because they don’t get support. “This often isn’t because people object to you having a new partner so much as them believing that you haven’t taken their feelings into consideration. Bereavement leaves people feeling very fragile and vulnerable, especially children who lose a parent.”
LIFE AFTER LOVE
Similarly, don’t rush into a relationship as soon as you’ve signed the divorce papers. It may give you a confidence boost, but if this relationship ends too, you will be left feeling even more vulnerable. “Instead of rushing back into looking for love, take some time to rebuild your selfesteem *for* and *by* yourself,” says dating website Match.com. “Achieving things works – set small goals, like running for ten minutes, or losing 5lbs, reading a high-brow literary classic, taking a good friend away for a weekend, getting a second job, redecorating a room… Small, achievable targets. “They might feel trivial, but by regularly setting goals and meeting them, you’ll rebuild your image of yourself as successful – a huge boost, after the feelings of failure that divorce (however amicable) can create.” On the flip side, don’t give up on love because your marriage failed. “While you are rebuilding your self-image, consciously think about your marriage and what went wrong,” continues Match.com. “Counselling can be invaluable now. The ideal is to reach a place of acceptance with your divorce, and your ex, and your new life. Realise that you have things to offer a new relationship.” Once you’ve come to terms with the divorce and have built up your confidence, it’s time to start looking. “There’ an old adage that love will find you only when you stop looking for it. But post-divorce, you have to be proactive. You’re older, you have less free time if you’re having to work longer hours or raise kids […] “So, try to meet love halfway. Sign up for
So you’ve found your perfect partner and you’re ready to take the next step. Although getting remarried and moving in together may seem natural to you and your partner, don’t be surprised if your children are not exactly jumping for joy. Helpguide.org, a trusted online guide to mental, emotional and social health says: “Too many changes at once can unsettle children. Blended families have the highest success rate if the couple waits two years or more after a divorce to remarry, instead of piling one drastic family change onto another. “Make parenting changes before you marry. Agree with your new partner how you intend to parent together, and then make any necessary adjustments to your parenting styles before you remarry. It’ll make for a smoother transition and your kids won’t become angry at your new spouse for initiating changes.” Don’t expect to love your partner’s children right away. It takes time to build trust and affection with new families. “Insist on respect,” continues Helpguide.org. “You can’t insist people like each other, but you can insist that they treat one another with respect. “Given the right support, kids should gradually adjust to the prospect of marriage and being part of a new family. It is your job to communicate openly, meet their needs for security, and give them plenty of time to make a successful transition.” For more tips on successfully blending your families, visit www.helpguide.org/articles/ family-divorce/step-parenting-blendedfamilies.htm

FUNERALS
Peace of mind for the future EXCELLENT VALUE FUNERAL PLANS FROM YOUR LOCAL INDEPENDENT FUNERAL DIRECTOR. n increasing number of people are deciding to make their own funeral plans. This ensures not only that their wishes are respected, but it can also reduce some of the anxiety that their loved ones will feel at the time of loss. If you take out a Funeral Plan with Peace Funerals, you pay at today’s prices for your funeral in the future. This will guarantee that, no matter what happens to inflation, all the funeral director’s costs will be covered in full at the time of the funeral. Increases in other costs that are paid on your behalf by your funeral director called disbursements (such as crematorium, or cemetery fees, doctor’s fees and newspaper costs), will be covered up to the level of the Consumer Price Index increases. So whether your funeral takes place in 12 months, or 30 years, there is nothing more to pay for the funeral director’s services you have chosen. When you take out a Peace Funerals Plan, the payment that you make is paid into the Ethical Funeral Plans Trust Fund. This makes your funds totally secure. So whatever happens in the future, the funds will be there to pay for your funeral at the time of need. All Funeral Plans are provided by Peace Funerals working in conjunction with the Ethical Funeral Plans Trust. Peace Funerals are previous winners of the ‘Best Funeral
A
Directors in the UK Award’. The Ethical Funeral Plans Trust is the only Funeral Planning Trust committed to investing your plan funds ethically.
