THE HOME OF QUALITY FROM STUNNING HAND-CRAFTED KITCHENS TO BESPOKE FURNITURE, DAVID J MARTIN’S ATTENTION TO DETAIL PRODUCES BEAUTIFUL RESULTS. n these days of mass produced furniture it seems almost impossible to find beautiful bespoke, handmade pieces, whether that be for your kitchen, bedroom, study or lounge. At David J Martin customers are welcomed into the firm’s on-site workshop, to see their furniture come to life. “People often don’t believe that the workshop is here, under the showroom” said owner David Martin. “Then we bring them downstairs and they’re blown away.” There’s a team of eight, highly trained carpenters working on kitchen cabinets and islands, bedroom furniture, desks and study furniture, each one made unique to order. David himself is a carpenter by trade, training for years before completing a degree in the subject. He ensures his staff are trained to the highest standard, resulting in the finest quality products. Everything at David J Martin happens under one roof, so David himself can check the quality and finish of each product at every stage of the process. “Our attention to detail is second to none and this makes us stand out from the crowd,” said David. “We are not held to ransom by mass-produced products as we make everything from scratch – even down to

making our own cutters for producing mouldings.” This means you can add to your kitchen in years to come and the company will still be able to match the designs. In the David J Martin showroom, a stunning range of kitchens is on display, but the company also produces bespoke furniture for every room in the house. For the bedroom, the company builds beautiful wardrobes, and other unique storage solutions for difficult spaces. For the study, David’s team of carpenters can build desks and media spaces.
After an initial customer consultation, when David will discuss budgets and offer expert design advice, the cabinetmakers work from plans drawn by David and create bespoke furniture, which can be sprayed to high gloss or satin finishes using durable Two Pac paint. With larger companies, you will often see doors advertised as having a ‘high-gloss finish’. This means that they are vinylwrapped and, although this does produce a shiny look, it means that you will be able to see the joins. David J Martin’s professional sprayer can apply any colour you wish in their paintspraying booth, giving a modern finish with no joins. That means water cannot seep in and cause peeling – something that can happen with vinyl-wrapped doors. Everything is done in-house, which enables David to guarantee high quality at every stage. For those customers undertaking full refurbishment of their home, David J Martin can provide a one-stop shop for structural, plumbing and electricity work, as well as building furniture. David said: “We run a building company alongside our bespoke joinery company, so customers are not waiting for plumbers, electricians and so on. We can take care of

everything and ensure that the project is completed to the highest standard.” For David it’s all about creating a high quality customer experience, whether the job be big or small. One call to David J Martin could result in a stunning new extension, complete with kitchen, plumbing and electricity – David only employs the best tradesmen. In the company’s 37 years of trading, David J Martin has built a superb reputation for customer satisfaction. The company is highly regarded for their customer and after-sales service, ensuring that every customer is a happy one and fixing any problems with their

GARDEN TRENDS
WORDS: HANNAH SANDERS
FLOWER POWER IT’S TIME TO GET OUT AND MAKE EVERYTHING IN YOUR GARDEN LOVELY…
ow that the summer’s here it’s time to embrace the longer days and put our green fingers to good use. As bulbs begin to fade and herbaceous borders grow in leaps and bounds, sowing and planting out bedding plants can begin, hanging baskets can be assembled and vegetables can start to be harvested. However, it’s still important to make sure your garden is in shape. Here’s some top tips on what to do in your mid-summer garden.
N
GARDEN TRENDS
BASIC MAINTENANCE GET RID OF WEEDS As the weather becomes warmer, your garden will start to feel alive again. Weeds will start appearing, along with ivy and brambles. It’s best to get rid of them as soon as they appear, and you can always spray your garden with a wildlife-friendly weed killer. KEEP IT TRIM To make sure that hedges grow densely and evenly, they should be cut several times a year. Ornamental grasses, perennials, evergreens along with rose bushes and shrubs also need pruning regularly.
THE STYLE
MOW YOUR LAWN It’s time to get back into the lawn mowing regime as the added warmth and sunshine will inject a new lease of life to the grass in your garden. REMOVE DEAD FLOWERS Removing wilted flowers is not only done for aesthetic reasons, but also supports the formation of new flowering shoots. Some summer shrubs like larkspur, produce flowers a second time in autumn, when they are cut back after the main flowering.
After tending your garden with general care, it’s time to start focusing on what style you’re going for this year. 2017 is full of new and exciting garden trends, from colour blocking and natural materials to vertical gardening there’s something to suit every taste.
COLOUR HIT This involves creating blocks of colour, whether it’s with a painted area behind a planter, coloured tiles or even a solid coloured outdoor rug. Living blocks of colour are on trend too; greens, browns and reds are easy to achieve and use clever plant selections to get brighter colours such as pinks or yellows. Also pick plants that change colour seasonally, to give your garden a fresh lease of life every season.
BACK TO BASICS Instead of the clean-cut modern look, landscapers are going back to the DIY image of the 1970s. Expect more natural materials, running rivers and wooden décor this year. To create a stress-free natural look try using repurposed old wood, driftwood, plant pots or even create a rockery.
LIGHT UP Outdoor lighting is not only being used to highlight horticulture but, also to serve as mood lighting for outdoor events. Invest in some LED fairy or solar powered lights and create a walkway through your garden or, simply decorate trees and bushes to add some sparkle.
THE URBAN JUNGLE Smaller houses, more people renting and a passion for seventies kitsch has led to a trend for more indoor plants. It’s easy to create a small indoor garden with wall hangings, shelves and terrariums, adding a new lease of life into your home which is easy to care for. Look out for cacti as they are set to be the 2017 trend for indoor plants.
VERTICAL GARDENING With garden space at a premium, plants are headed the same way as architecture; vertically. Taller plants serve as a great alternative for urban gardeners. Wall planting is set to be a big feature of 2017, so invest in some hanging shrubbery and create your own wonderwall.
OLD AND NEW MASH-UP It isn’t about choosing one style and sticking to it this year. Try bringing both traditional and modern elements into your garden to make it more eye-catching and unique. Pair handmade artisan wares next to furniture with a modern design or in front of a painted wall.
NEW PLANTS ON THE SCENE Last year it was a calendula, along with the Mountain Pepper and Golden Duchess. This year gardeners are keen to find plants that can stand up to the tough weather. Fleuroselect have mentioned that 2017 will be the year of the zinnia, bean and begonias. COMFORTABLE SEATING Gone are the days of hard wooden benches or metal chairs, now it is time for comfortable outdoor seating. Invest in some colourful cushions and outdoor throws for your furniture. For something more unusual, try a swinging round seat or daybed. HYPERLOCALISM This year locally sourced plants are set to come back into fashion. Look at plants native to your area and take inspiration from nearby woods, parks or hedgerows. If plant spotting isn’t your thing, talk to a local nursery or garden centre about what would suit your garden. OUTDOOR KITCHENS Garden kitchens go perfectly with outdoor seating. BBQs are not the only thing outside anymore, gradually fridges, work surfaces, sinks and fire pits have made their way outdoors. WHITE PLANTS The use of white plants is more of a returning trend than a new one. The flowers give off a glow at night, which will complement any outdoor seating. Look out for the English marigold this year. TRY WATER GROWING VEGETABLES Having a constant supply of fresh organic vegetables is difficult if you have limited garden space. Try putting the roots of various vegetables including celery, green onion and cabbage in a water bowl and >>> watch them re-grow.

GARDEN TRENDS
FLOWERS AND PLANTS TO LOOK OUT FOR After preparing the garden it’ll be time to think about making it colourful. Here are some popular summer flowers that are sure to bring life into any garden. ASTER These thrive throughout the summer and bloom nearly nonstop in the fall if you keep the spent flowers picked. The daisylike flowers come in lavender, pink and white. Plant in partial sun and keep soil moist.
DAHLIA Available in bold blooms in a range of vibrant colours. Plant in full sun as they grow more blossoms with six to eight hours direct sunlight – and in rich, well-drained soil.
BEARDED IRIS Classic garden tubers with beautiful ruffled blooms and a light fragrance. Plant late summer in a sunny spot, with well-drained soil. Need at least six hours of sunlight per day. Plant a minimum of 16 to 18 inches apart.
Chives
POPULAR HERBS AND VEGETABLES TO GROW Growing your own vegetables or herbs can be very beneficial to cost and saving. Focus on how much space you have in your garden; this will tell you what you can grow. If space is limited, think about buying dwarf selections or patio vegetables. PEAS Give the ground a good sprinkling of wood ashes before planting. Plant one inch deep and two inches apart. Get them in the ground while the soil is still cool but don’t have them sit too long in wet soil. CHIVES Sow seeds in spring or fall, ½ inch deep and in rows 12 inches apart. Prefer full sun. Soil needs to be moist, rich and well-draining. LEAF LETTUCE Thin seedlings when leaves start to appear, proceed until the plants are 30cm apart. Water the plants when the soil is dry in the mornings. Watch out for slugs and sparrows; make a barrier to put around them. MINT Thrives in light, moist soil with good drainage. Plant two feet apart and should grow to be about one or two feet tall. Frequent harvesting is key to keeping the plant at its best.

But in recent years, a new breed of man cave has emerged. An increasingly number of men (and women) are opting for outdoor rooms or sheds. Gone are the days when a shed only contained rusty garden furniture and cobwebs. Thanks to TV shows such as Shed of the Year and George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces, a new generation have discovered its endless possibilities. HOLDING STEADY WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD FOR THE PROPERTY MARKET? PHOEBE SEYMOUR ASKED TWO OF THE REGION’S PREMIER EXPERTS.
26 www.sheffieldvibe.com
NICOLA SPENCER, Spencer The Estate Agent “There has been a city living revolution over the last 15 years in Sheffield. Property developers are now investing in a high volume of new-build apartments in and around the city centre for the PRS and student markets. “Because students will be living in many of these apartments, there will be a high turnover of tenants and landlords may have difficulty making them remain appealing,
especially with high levels of competition. “Landlords used to claim tax relief on their mortgage interest payments so their mortgage interest could be off set against their income, but new legislation means this will no longer be the case. The changes are being phased in annually until 2020, so we can expect to see an influx of investment property for sale when people reassess their investments towards the end of the tax year (April 2018)

TONY HARRISON, Move In, Move Out Estate Agents “As forecast, there has been continued uncertainty in the UK residential property market for the first half of 2017. “This is mainly as a result of unfolding events surrounding the UK’s Brexit from the EU and the general election, together with an ever-changing global political arena, with a different presidential style in the USA and events continuing to unfold in the rest of Europe. “The impact of more house building is still yet to be seen and may take some time to take any effect on property prices, however, while demand exceeds supply in most parts of the UK, property prices have and should remain stable for the remainder of 2017, with modest increases seen in most regions. The north-south property price divide continues to get wider, however, the Northern Powerhouse project
may help begin to reduce the gap over time. “In Yorkshire, the property market has seen some encouraging signs of improving in 2017, with popular and desirable areas of Harrogate, Leeds and Sheffield seeing a continued increase in demand. “Meanwhile, in some areas of Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham, property prices have continued to remain relatively the same as 2016, with price falls being seen in some areas, partly as a result of landlords selling properties due to the recent changes in stamp duty and taxation for buy to let properties.”
‘As long as people are sensible, save up for a deposit and don’t get greedy, we should see a steadier and more consistent property market throughout these slightly uncertain economic political times.’
up until its full implementation. “Sheffield as a whole is currently short on stock for residential urban sales, so we’re seeing up to 10 offers on some properties. Historically, buyers have always expected to offer over or the exact asking price, but as there are fewer properties, offers are being pushed even higher. As interest rates are likely to rise towards the end of the year, caution should be advised when bidding over asking prices. “As long as people are sensible, save up for a deposit and don’t get greedy, we should see a steadier and more consistent property market throughout these slightly uncertain economic political times.” >>> www.sheffieldvibe.com 27

English is widely spoken, the legal system is the same and there’s the comforting familiarity of driving on the same side of the road, plus 330 days of sunshine a year. There’s also been significant investment in the Lanarca area, a new marina in Ayia Napa, and the this year should be big for Paphos, a European Capital of Culture 2017. Malta
Malta Handily placed between North Africa, the Middle East and southern Europe, Malta has got the climate, plenty of year-round sights and is oozing with history - but also some world-class amenities. Its property market is in good shape too. Malta recorded the highest quarterly increase in house prices in the EU (+6.2 per cent) in the third quarter of last year, according to Eurostat, and offers new developments as well as traditional houses. Greece
Greece Greece has changed little for centuries; the stunning natural scenery, the authentic seaside towns and villages with their laidback and traditional lifestyle, tavernas’ and hospitable locals, and interest from buyers is focused on the popular holiday islands: Crete, Corfu and the other Ionian isles, as well as the Cyclades (including Mykonos and Santorini) and the Peloponnese. The typical budget remains
around €100,000 to €300,000, although there are charming little stone houses from as little as €40,000, and there are more expensive micro markets - the ever fashionable party island of Mykonos or low-key Spetses, for example, where property prices remain relatively high because the locations are still highly sought after. The tourist hub of Chania on the north coast of Crete remains popular too, with property hunters also favouring Kefalonia, the Peloponnese, Samos and Skiathos.
Italy Italy
Impossibly romantic, effortlessly stylish and oozing with culture; Italy has enjoyed a passionate following from overseas visitors for centuries. This is after all a nation with more UNESCO World Heritage sites than any other and if Michelangelo or Botticelli don’t draw you to Rome or Florence, then maybe the romantic elegance of the lakes, or the medieval hill-top towns of Abruzzo, Marche or Umbria appeals? In recent years the Italian coast has attracted a growing number of international buyers - from Tuscany to Sardinia, Puglia and Liguria - although it is inland Liguria where you find the best bargains. So where are the hot spots? Tuscany, Le Marche, Liguria, Lombardy and Abruzzo. Budget is clearly a big factor too and homes below €100,000 are becoming increasingly popular.
Spain
Spain
Tourism is booming, the Spanish economy is improving, and even unemployment is dropping. But what of the property market? It continues to improve, although prices remain well below market peak in many areas – with the notable exception of the sought-after areas of the Balearics, Madrid and Barcelona. According to the National Institute of Statistics the Balearics and Almeria show the biggest year-on-year increases, followed by Barcelona, Calalonia and Asturias. The Costa Blanca is also a perennial favourite, with prices still highly affordable.
France There’s much to like about the French market and our nearest neighbour remains a top choice for lifestyle and affordable property - a confluence of (still) falling property prices and record-low rates for borrowers’ means that it is a great time to buy a home in France. But the drop in interest rates has been the big story of the market so far this year. With the pound bouncing up and down like a yo-yo, home hunters are taking advantage of the low borrowing rate and an investment property in Paris, the Alps or PACA can easily provide a 3 to 4 per cent yield, with 7 to 8 per cent yield available in some provincial towns. Portugal
Portugal The laid-back, affordable Portuguese lifestyle continues to draw in home hunters because it offers a lessdeveloped alternative to the Spanish Costa del Sol. Along with the refreshingly affordable cost of living – outside Lisbon or five-star resorts. The Portuguese government has been savvy about attracting overseas buyers in recent years and has helped kick-start the property market with a couple of successful incentives: its ‘golden visa’ scheme, which has had great take-up from non-EU investors spending €500,000 or over, and the Non-
Habitual Tax Residency scheme (NHR), which has attracted Europeanex-pats due to low or zero income tax rates. Golden visa sales have been driving the property boom in Lisbon – prices went up an impressive 30 per cent between 2013 and 2016. But buyers seeking a city pad should now look at Porto as a long-term investment – its old centre, or Baixa, is transforming already. Meanwhile, non-habitual residents and retirees are heading to the Algarve, where prices are still down from the market peak.
