22 Read about the plans to redevelop Hyde Park Picture House

ello and welcome to the August issue of Northside. This month we take a closer look at one of Leeds’ most iconic buildings – Hyde Park Picture House. The cinema, built in 1914, is a huge community asset and is currently undergoing a major refurbishment which is due to be completed next year. With two screens and greater accessibility, it should retain its important role for years to come. On the food front we dine at two very different restaurants – we enjoy a street food experience at Zaap Headingley and a taste of the Mediterranean at Zorbas Bar & Grill. Elsewhere, we preview Leeds Playhouse’s autumn/winter season and have the latest fashion, beauty and trends for the home. See you next month for our special wedding edition.

A collective live experience LEEDS PLAYHOUSE HAS ANNOUNCED ITS AUTUMN/WINTER SEASON – AND IT’S FILLED WITH EXCITING NEW PRODUCTIONS AND MORE. 14 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

he return of live audiences to theatres has been a long time coming but thankfully, is slowly happening. If government relaxing goes ahead as planned, these audiences are only going to grow further, which is great news for our local arts and culture venues. Leeds Playhouse is pressing ahead with enticing visitors back into its theatres with the launch of their autumn/winter programme, which celebrates everything theatre offers as a collective live experience - including new productions, compelling dramas, exciting

collaborations and a magical adventure to bring the festive spirit to Leeds this Christmas. Highlights include a stunning new staging of Wendy & Peter Pan, a bold, ambitious and wide-ranging programme of work involving an array of exciting creative partners, a reinvigorated commitment to diversity showcased by dynamic programming, and a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone to

reconnect with the joy of live theatre. “The past year has made us truly appreciate the importance of theatre as a live shared experience,” said Artistic Director James Brining. “Our building is massively diminished when it’s not populated by artists, performers, storytellers, theatre-makers, colleagues, friends, participants, partners, supporters and audiences – all the people who make the Playhouse a vibrant hub of creativity for the city, the region and beyond. “Leeds Playhouse was formed half a century ago as a theatre for the people

and we have emerged from lockdown more determined than ever to honour and develop this ethos through our work, our reach and our welcome. “Our Autumn-Winter Season reflects our enhanced ambitions and aspirations. We are working with a diverse range of partners – many from our home city – to present work that will appeal to the widest possible audience, to bring joy and entertainment, and to share the experience of live theatre safely.” Presented by Leeds West Indian Carnival (22 & 27 August), the King & Queen Show (27 August) is back at the Playhouse this August with, for the first time, the Prince & Princess Show too (22 August). Join this celebration of emancipation, move to the sweet sounds of the socabeats and steelpans, and enjoy more than five decades of wonderful costumes as the carnival chronicles its 54-year history. Freedom Project (10-18 September) melds lived experience with creative theatre-making as refugees Mo and Hossein share stories – both personal and global – that explore the very different journeys taken by unaccompanied minors as they leave their home countries in search of sanctuary. Written by Luke Barnes and directed by Alexander Ferris, this is an honest, reflective, challenging and funny production. The young performers – both long-standing participants in Leeds Playhouse’s Theatre of Sanctuary programme – combine moments of dream-like wonder with unflinching fact sharing, drawing the audience into a direct dialogue and asking them to consider what life is really like for children fleeing danger and seeking a new home in the UK. Dracula: The Untold Story (25 September – 9 October) will transport audiences to New Year’s Eve, 1963. Just before midnight, as revellers celebrate the beginning of another year, a young woman enters Marylebone Police Station and confesses to a brutal murder. She claims to be Mina Harker, the last living survivor of the intrepid group that witnessed Count Dracula’s destruction some 65 years before. But Mina Harker has not been seen since 1905. And if she was alive, she would be ninety years old. Unfolding on stage as a live graphic novel, this chilling new version of the classic gothic vampire tale is a coproduction by Leeds Playhouse and imitating the dog. Jitney (16 October – 6 November), a co-production from Leeds Playhouse and Headlong, brings August Wilson’s

ground-breaking modern classic to the stage. When regular cabs won’t travel to the Pittsburgh Hill District in 1977, local residents turn to the unlicensed taxi company of Jim Becker and his fellow ‘jitney’ drivers. When Becker’s son returns from prison, a struggle to reconcile the past begins and the future of the company and its drivers is threatened. Directed by Tinuke Craig Jitney explores the fragile bond between eight men, as they live, love and work in a racially segregated, post-Vietnam America. My Voice Was Heard But It Was Ignored (11-13 November) – by Red Ladder Theatre Company with support from Leeds Playhouse and Oldham Coliseum Theatre – opens with 15-yearold Reece being roughly accosted by police outside M&S. His young, black teacher Gillian witnesses it all but doesn’t question or intervene as the disturbing scene plays out.The consequences of her lack of action erupt the following day when Gillian finds herself locked in a classroom with her angry student. He wants her to feel the irreversible breakdown of trust, to pay and to know his pain.Written by Nana-Kofi Kufuor and directed by Dermot Daly. Leeds Playhouse will take audiences on an unforgettable trip to Neverland this Christmas as it stages Ella Hickson’s Wendy & Peter Pan (18 November – 22 January). Co-directed byJonathan Munby and Rupert Hands, this adaptation of the J M Barrie by Ella Hickson classic retells the story from the unique viewpoint of Wendy Darling. Packed with theatrical magic, beautiful designs, breath-taking flying and plenty of laughs, it promises to be an unforgettable journey for all the family. Elsewhere, Phoenix Dance Theatre, one of the UK’s leading contemporary dance companies, is marking its 40th birthday with a special anniversary gala. The 40th anniversary gala (3 December) will feature the debut of a new collaborative work by company founderDavid Hamilton MBE and Artistic Director Dane Hurst. Audiences can look forward to the company performing short new works, extracts of repertoire and special guest performances from celebrated and award-winning companies from around the UK. A rare opportunity A NEW EXHIBITION AT YORK MINSTER EXPLORES THE MEDIEVAL ST CUTHBERT WINDOW.

Images courtesy Charlotte Graham Photography

ork Minster’s medieval St Cuthbert Window is nearly 600 years old and one of the largest surviving narrative windows in the world. A new exhibition, which will run until 2024, explores the window’s history, its representation of the life of St Cuthbert through a series of exquisite stained glass panels and the new five-year, £5million

Y

project to conserve its stained glass and the stonework of its tracery and the surrounding South East Transept. The window, which dates from around 1440, tells the story of St Cuthbert, an Anglo-Saxon monk and bishop of Lindisfarne who lived between c.634 and 687 and was renowned for his good works and miracles, which made him for many centuries the most important saint in northern England. Light, Glass & Stone: Conserving the St Cuthbert Window gives visitors a rare opportunity to see at close range a selection of stained glass panels removed from the window as part of the conservation work, alongside an animated projection and soundscape of one of St Cuthbert’s miracles. Dr Helen Rawson,York Minster’s Head of Heritage, said: “The window, in its beauty, detail and technique, is one of the finest surviving examples of the art and craftsmanship of medieval glaziers and stonemasons and their skills show in detail the life, work and miracles of St Cuthbert, who was the leading saint of northern England in the Middle Ages. “The conservation project has given us the rare opportunity to showcase the detail of some of the window’s richly decorated stained glass panels, which would normally only be visible to 16 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

visitors from a distance. “It has also created the opportunity for new research into the window’s history and the stories it tells, and we look forward to sharing this insight with our visitors.” The exhibition is housed in a specially created gallery at the foot of the scaffolding which is currently surrounding the window to enable the conservation work to take place. The first phase of work to conserve the window started in spring this year when experts from York Glaziers Trust removed all 152 stained glass panels from the window, allowing the Minster’s stonemasons to start carrying out urgent work to replace and repair eroded and decaying masonry. Professor Sarah Brown, Director of York Glaziers Trust, explained: “York Minster is a treasure-trove of stained glass and the St Cuthbert Window is one

of the jewels of the cathedral’s East End, sitting alongside the St William and Great East Windows which have both undergone major conservation and restoration projects in the last two decades. “The essential repair of the stone of the South East Transept has created a once in a lifetime opportunity to conserve the window, which was last restored following the Second World War.” Other exhibition highlights include images from a 12th century manuscript about St Cuthbert’s life, which was consulted when the window was designed, and details of how his remains were eventually placed in a shrine at Durham Cathedral following Viking raids on Lindisfarne, his original burial place. The exhibition is free with general admission. All tickets must be booked in advance, visit www.yorkminster.org for further details.

A fundraising campaign for the conservation project is ongoing, and people can support the work by adopting a piece of the window’s stained glass. St Cuthbert Window Adoption Packs are available from the York Minster Shops inside the cathedral and at Minster Gates or online at shop.yorkminster.org.

Thankfully, the reopening of clubs and dancefloors has coincided with my team-up with the legendary nightclub The Warehouse, who are working closely with team Pink Gorilla as we speak. I spent many memorable nights there during my twenties, misbehaving at Speed Queen and can’t wait to check out their revamped live music venue. It looks amazing, especially nks izza Pu ils at P a the loft, so keep a lookout for t k c o C some exciting gigs (and club nights too) coming soon. One place that most definitely whets my appetite this summer is Multistories. They’ve smashed it since launch, fast becoming the place to soak up the 2021 sunshine with icecold beers and great food, eight storeys up. If you’ve not yet been, just go. The only thing missing is my latest prize possession, my beloved paddling pool. An essential purchase when the whole country is melting. After seemingly endless cancellations and refunds over the past 18 months, I’m thrilled that we’re able to bring Mardi Gras to Roundhay Park on 14 August. This event is a first of its kind in Leeds bringing headliners Jax Jones, Disciples and Sigala will be supported by a host of hot local talent, My prized summer possession – paddling pool including Angel Lee, Dale

Castell and Ru Paul’s Drag Race star Baga Chipz. Well worth dusting off those dancing shoes for. Stein lovers will be pleased to learn that the iconic Oktoberfest Leeds is making a Leeds comeback, after a year’s hiatus. Set to reside at Globe Waterside just a few minutes from Leeds Station, revellers can expect vats of frosty German ale and more oompah band action you can shake a chilli bratwurst at. They’ll be doing their thing from Thursday 7 until Sunday 10 October. Tickets are moving fast, so get yours booked to avoid disappointment. One of the best days of 2021 has to be my trip to the Great Yorkshire Show last month. Such a great day to celebrate God’s own country. Top-notch food, drinks and a spot of carriage riding but the Charolais prize bulls stole

the show for me. They are HUGE. Foodie favourites Chophaus have been causing a stir with their latest menu, which I had the privilege of tasting recently. My new go-to dish has got to be the juicy Baby Back Ribs with Nduja Mac N Cheese. Unrivalled. Their new cocktails are divine too; the Champagne Super Clover is what lazy terrace afternoons are made for. If you like your pizza a little on the rebellious side, then Pizza Punks might just be your new favourite spot. Having already ripped up the rulebook in Glasgow, Belfast and Newcastle, they’re bringing their unique brand of out-there pizzas, fresh pasta, craft ales and cocktails to Leeds this month.Watch this space for more info and check out their Pizza in the Post menu if you can’t wait any longer. And, whilst we’re on the subject of mouth-watering fast food, I must share with you my latest visit to Yard and Coop. By far the city’s best place to enjoy the simple but heavenly pleasures of fried chicken, hot picks from their new menu include the super tasty Lil’ Pea Ndjua and the Strawberry Daze Salad. Who’d have thought that buttermilk fried chicken thighs would taste even better with pickled strawberries, creamy hummus, goats cheese and zingy avocado salsa. So good, especially with a cheeky side of Blue Cheese Dirty Fries. That’s all from me this month, so enjoy the sunshine, stay safe and I’ll see you soon.

Reeling in the years A NEW REFURBISHMENT PROJECT AIMS TO PROTECT AND PRESERVE HYDE PARK PICTURE HOUSE, HELPING IT TO REMAIN A COMMUNITY ASSET FOR MANY YEARS TO COME. or many of us, a trip to the cinema is the ultimate escape. A couple of hours to lose yourself in another world or time. We now live in the era of modern multiplexes but there is still space for the small, independent picture houses that are cherished in their communities. Hyde Park Picture House, located in the north-west of Leeds, is the perfect example. Having opened in 1914, it has been a valuable asset to the community for over 100 years. Now, thanks to backing from the Heritage Lottery Fund, it is embarking on a new chapter. Major refurbishment works have now started on the Grade II listed cinema that will protect and preserve its historic features as well as making the building more sustainable, more comfortable and

more accessible and ultimately the best place to experience film in the city. Exploring, celebrating and conserving the cinema’s rich heritage lies at the the very heart of The Picture House Project, which is expected to be completed by summer 2022. From refurbishing the unique gas lights and Edwardian plasterwork to maintaining an ability to project and share traditional analogue film formats, the project will ensure that the cinema is preserved for many years to come. Hyde Park Picture House remains the only gas-light cinema in the UK and their nine gas lamps are a key heritage feature. Originally installed as a form of ‘modesty lighting’ to prevent any inappropriate back-seat behaviour, they’re now a symbol of the cinema’s

Edwardian origins and continue to be lit every single day. Similarly, the cinema’s two Cinemeccanica 35mm projectors are in line for refurbishment. Manufactured in the 1960s, they were originally installed at the Odeon cinema in Grimsby, and then the Lounge in Headingley, before finding their home at Hyde Park Picture House in 2005. The machines have been well maintained over the years by a team of trained projectionists and allow the cinema to project a large number of classic and archive films that many other cinemas can no longer screen. Other historical features that will remain part of the refurbished building include an art-deco clock that has sat in the auditorium since the 1950s, an original fire hydrant and the grand

fireplace, where the snack kiosk currently stands. There’s also a magnificent stained glass window dating back to 1914, marble and granite terrazzo tiles and an ornamental lamppost which has become an iconic part of Hyde Park Picture House and like the main building it is also Grade II listed. Originally gas-lit, it is now powered by electricity. Moving forward, a fundamental aim of The Picture House Project is to make the space accessible to all. This means implementing step-free access to all major parts of the cinema, providing better facilities including accessible toilets and working hard to remove nonphysical barriers too so that all audiences, regardless of their background, feel safe, comfortable and

welcome in the cinema. In addition, the project aims to create the best film watching experience in Leeds. Whether you’re into world cinema, timeless classics or the latest award-winner, Hyde Park Picture House will be able to bring you more of what you love, achieved through the addition of a second screen in the basement. With seating for between 40-60 people, this will mean twice as many films and a programme with even more variety – think foreign language films, documentaries and independent films. The main auditorium will also receive a much-needed refurbishment and technology will be upgraded too; alongside the two 35mm projectors there will be new digital ones and The Picture House Project will also see investment in

the sound system and cinema screen which means you will see films in their best possible light. Pushing its appeal even further, and thanks to an extension along the north side of the building, Hyde Park Picture House will house a new café/bar and flexible workspaces, the latter of which will be available for use by the local community for workshops and meetings. New partnerships will also be created to reach new audiences, particularly in the black, Asian and minority ethnic groups. To find out even more about The Picture House Project, we spoke to Ollie Jenkins.

What role has the picture house played in the community over the years?

For over a hundred years now the Picture House it’s been a constant, recognisable, reassuring presence in North West Leeds, responding to and reflecting the changing likes and needs of its wonderful local community. When it first opened its doors in 1914, the cinema played a vitally important role for those in its area, screening newsreels from the front line and images from the across the world, as war engulfed Europe and beyond. During these early years the Picture House also screened lots of patriotic dramas, helping to boost morale and bring audiences together during times of national crisis. This integral relationship between the Picture House and our community has often resulted in the cinema doing more than just screening films. From supporting the work of local charities, to working alongside the universities to help reduce waste in the area, the Picture House constantly tries to make a positive difference to its local community, in ways more conventional multiplexes are usually not able to. Without the Picture House’s community the cinema would simply not exist today. Looking forward we are more keen than ever for every part of our local community to be reflected at the cinema and what we do, and for it to be a place that everyone can call home. What makes it special?

We are often asked asked this question – and it’s always incredibly hard to give just one reason why the Picture House is such a special place. What I think makes the cinema really special is it’s story. The fact that after all these years this little Edwardian Picture House has survived against all odds, enduring two World Wars, the arrival of TV, the internet, a global pandemic – and how it doesn’t just survive but now continues to thrive – for me it’s that remarkable story which makes the Hyde Park Picture House a truly special place. The refurbishments are underway, how are these being funded?

With work on our redevelopment project having recently started, it’s such an exciting time here at the cinema. The Picture House Project – which will see essential repair and conservation work 24 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

take place, alongside the creation of vital new accessible facilities including a second screen in the basement – has primarily been funded and supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. We’ve also received substantial matchfunding support from Leeds City Council, as well as a number of trusts and foundations including Garfield Weston, the Gwyneth Forrester Trust and the Pilgrim Trust. With a small amount of matchfunding still needing to be raised, we will be launching a community fundraising campaign later this year, providing audiences with loads of fun ways to support the cinema and help get us over the finishing line.

This is such a difficult question! It’s impossible to say for sure how future generations and audiences will engage with the cinema and what it will mean to them. The hope is that the Picture House will continue to promote and champion the value of the shared film experience, bringing audiences together from all backgrounds, to experience something often greater than the sums of its parts. Another enduring legacy that we are aiming to achieve through our redevelopment project is to preserve, protect and celebrate the cinema’s rich history – not just through conserving and protecting our physical building, but also by revealing and sharing more stories from the cinema’s past. By telling the story of the Hyde Park Picture House, we are also able to tell the story of film watching and making, and also the story of Leeds itself. While the refurbishment works are taking place, the cinema continues to screen films off-site as part of the On the Road film programme. They are currently showing films at the City Varieties, Leeds University Union and the Heart centre. You can find out more by visiting hydeparkpicturehouse.co.uk/ on_the_road To find out more about The Picture House Project and also the Hiding in Plain Sight lost cinemas project, visit www.thepicturehouseproject.com or www.lostcinemas.co.uk Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk 25

IN HER LATEST COLUMN, CLARE CAROLL TALKS EYELASH ENHANCEMENT AND HOW A SIMPLE TINT CAN MAKE A HUGE DIFFERENCE. DR LEE GRAHAM PHD MBCHB MRCP IS A CONSULTANT CARDIOLOGIST SPECIALISING IN ELECTROPHYSIOLOGY. HE WORKS AT LEEDS TEACHING HOSPITALS TRUST AND PRIVATELY AT SPIRE LEEDS HOSPITAL IN ROUNDHAY. QUESTION:

I have been experiencing palpitations for a few months now and this is often accompanied by shortness of breath and dizziness. Do you think that there could be something seriously wrong with me? I have made an appointment to see my GP. Do you think I might need to see a specialist? ANSWER:

Palpitations are a common symptom and refer to an awareness of your own heart beating. Patients may feel their heart beating at a normal rate, a faster rate, which may be regular or irregular, or feel their heart skipping or missing beats. Palpitations often cause a sensation of fluttering or pounding in the chest and are usually intermittent. Many people will experience palpitations at some stage in their lives but most do not have a serious underlying heart condition. However, the sensation is often unpleasant and can cause considerable worry or distress. If your symptoms persist or are associated with symptoms such as breathlessness or dizziness then you should initially consult with your GP who may arrange for you to have an electrocardiogram (ECG). This records the electrical activity of the heart and whilst it is often normal in patients with palpitations, can sometimes pick up an abnormal heart rhythm or “arrhythmia”. You may also be referred to a cardiologist, often one who specialises in abnormal heart rhythms (Cardiac Electrophysiologist) for further assessment and tests to identify if there is a problem. These may include a 24-hour ECG recording if your palpitations occur frequently or an exercise ECG if your palpitations are triggered by exertion. Other tests such as a cardiac ultrasound (echocardiogram) can sometimes be helpful in identifying patients with underlying structural heart disease. Depending on the cause, palpitations may not require specific treatment although sometimes medication is tried initially. Sometimes a slightly more invasive test called an electrophysiological (EP) study can be performed to identify extra electrical connections in the heart which may cause fast abnormal heart rhythms called supraventricular tachycardia (SVT). If these can be identified then catheter ablation can be performed at the same time. This is often very successful and can offer a cure for many patients.

Transform your life WHAT SHOULD YOU EXPECT FROM YOUR JOINT REPLACEMENT? MR VEYSI T VEYSI, OF JOINT MOTION HEALTH, EXPLAINS. ip and knee replacements are two of the most common operations performed in the United Kingdom. They are also some of the most successful, with over 80 per cent still functioning at 25 years according to a recent publication by the National Institute for Health Research. Over 75 per cent of people report that their joint is much better than it was before their operation. The usual reason for having a hip or knee replacement is severe pain due to arthritis. It is essential that your joint is assessed by an experienced orthopaedic surgeon who can advise you on treatment options. This assessment will involve a simple X-ray examination of the joint under question. The overall result of your treatment depends on many factors. People who get the best results are those who have their surgery at the right time (not too soon and not too late), by the right surgeon, and who follow the postoperative rehabilitation plan under the supervision of a qualified physiotherapist. Most people notice a big improvement

H

by six weeks and are back to full function by three months. Having surgery too soon, particularly if the X-ray changes are not bad enough, is one common reason for a poorer outcome. Equally, if the treatment is delayed muscles can become de-conditioned prolonging recovery. If you have had previous surgery or if your joint is very stiff, your final outcome may also be affected - but your joint is very likely to function better than it did before your replacement. Overall, the outcome of your joint

replacement is determined by the partnership you establish with your surgeon and physiotherapist. Best results are achieved by having surgery at the right time, for the right reason, by the right surgeon, and by having the right post-operative rehabilitation. Joint Motion Health surgeons, with their expertise and vast experience, use the latest surgical techniques backed by research evidence and would work with you to provide the best possible outcome for you.

Since opening the first branch in Leeds city centre six years ago, she added three more in Nottingham, Newcastle and York before adding a second Leeds outlet in Headingley. My partner and I found a table amidst the hustle and bustle of the restaurant and browsed the menu that contained over 80 authentic street food dishes. Against a backdrop of tunes that would sit comfortably on any Thai commercial radio station, our tastebuds were soon dancing to a Bangkok vibe. As is tradition, the dishes – whether Krub Krib (starters) or Tarm Sung (main dishes) – arrived at the table simultaneously. Yuko, the manageress, had recommended Tod Mun Pla (Thai fish

My partner selected a main course from the vegetarian menu and was delighted with her choice of Pad Prik Yourk (tofu stir fried with vegetables, green and red pepper, in a black bean sauce). Seeking a spicier option, I had opted for Pad Nam Prik Pao (chicken stir fried with chilli oil, vegetables, and basil). Neither of us would leave a morsel on the painted plastic plates which, of course, are also synonymous with Thai street food. And what better sign is there of

culinary approval than an empty plate or dish? An excellent meal and evening was rounded off with two superb ‘dezzerts’ – one a famous Thai street food the other distinctively northern English! My caramelised banana – served with vanilla ice cream and squirty cream – was simply gorgeous. My partner’s dish was billed as ‘one of the most famous Thai desserts’ – Tub Tim Krob – which translated as water chestnuts with syrup and coconut milk and was surprisingly good. Zaap is open from 11.30am every day for indoor dining, outdoor dining and takeaway.

There is a wide-choice of wines, beers, cocktails, and hot drinks. Zaap 4 St Anne’s Road, Headingley Leeds, LS6 3NX Tel: 0113 278 1234 www.zaapthai.co.uk

Taste of Greece IF YOU CAN’T GET TO THE GREEK ISLANDS THIS SUMMER, LET ZORBAS BAR & GRILL BRING THE GREEK ISLANDS TO YOU. he sun is shining and there’s the slightest breeze to keep you the right side of cool. You can feel the hot sand between your toes and hear the lapping of waves as they hit the shore. There’s the delicious smell of grilled meat in the air and the sound of clinking glasses as family and friends enjoy a meal under the shade of luscious olive trees. Sound good? If you’re dreaming of the Greek Islands (I’m sure many of us are) but it’s remaining just that, you can find your own little bit of the Mediterranean much closer to home. Crossgate in Leeds to be exact. Ok, so it’s not quite Corfu or Crete, there’s no beach and the sea is about an hour’s drive away, but if you’re looking for authentic Greek food, just like you’ll find on those sun-drenched islands, you can’t go far wrong than a visit to Zorbas Bar and Grill. The restaurant, which has been highly recommended by the Yorkshire Evening Post, opened in August 2019 and is run by brother and sister, Besmir and Giona

T

Sechou. Besmir is a professional chef who created the famous Zorbas menu for the previous owners in 2016 whilst Giona, who has been working as head chef in Zorbas from day one, is now running the front of the house. They both have been working in restaurants since the age of 13 love what they do and that’s why they couldn’t be any happier taking Zorbas over. Zorbas Bar and Grill deliver a true Greek dining experience with delicious freshly-cooked dishes such as Kleftiko – slow cooked lamb with carrots, potatoes, olives, onion, garlic and cheese; Stifado – slow cooked beef with shallots, garlic, tomato sauce; and Moussaka – layers of aubergine, minced beef, potatoes topped with home made tomato sauce and home made béchamel sauce baked in the oven. You can also try chicken souvlaki – marinated chicken pieces and vegetables skewer; Chicken paidakia – marinated chicken on the bone served with salad, chips and lemon and oil sauce; and Spanakopita – feta cheese, spinach and

spring onion, wrapped in filo pastry. Sweet tooths can be sated with baklava – a traditional dessert home made with pastry and walnuts served with ice cream; and orange pie. Zorbas Bar and Grill also offer an early bird menu, which offers two courses for £14.95, and extensive choices for children (three courses for £5.95). So, if your Greek holiday has been put on hold, let Besmir and Giona bring the Mediterranean to you. A unique school model for success THE FOUR SCHOOLS AT QUEEN ETHELBURGA’S COLLEGIATE ARE DESIGNED TO MAINTAIN A NURTURING FAMILY ATMOSPHERE AND SENSE OF INDIVIDUALITY. et in more than 220 acres of beautiful North Yorkshire countryside in a secure rural location, and under 2.5 hours from the capital by train, Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate welcomes girls and boys aged from 3 months and support them through four schools - Chapter House (3 months to Year 5), King’s Magna (Year 6 to 9), The College and The Faculty (both Year 10 to 13). This unique model made up of four smaller schools is designed to maintain a nurturing family atmosphere and sense of individuality, with each school having their own Heads and staff teams. King’s Magna is Queen Ethelburga’s middle school, supporting the transition between the Collegiate’s primary education at Chapter House and the demands of GCSEs. This supportive, vibrant and caring school environment ensures students can grow and mature into their teenage years with confidence.Visitors often comment that there is a ‘palpable sense of respect’ between students and staff, and amongst students themselves. Dan Machin, Acting Principal

of Queen Ethelburga’s, comments: “Our King’s Magna students set the example for the rest of the Collegiate to follow with their capacity to excel in times of change, and their determination to make the best of their interests, skills and talents. We expect a great deal and they rise to the challenge, whether that be developing their independence, their motivation, their personal and social skills, or their achievements. “No longer the Chapter House age class-based children, not yet the public exam, career and skills developing senior school students; our King’s Magna students develop the foundations for future success with their academic studies, their broad range of activities

and interests, and above all else their infectious enthusiasm in all that they take on. “We have developed our own curriculum which is relevant, challenging and engaging for our learners. Our innovative, modern programmes of study foster curiosity and equip students with the skills and knowledge they need to move seamlessly to our College or Faculty at the end of Year 9.” The Queen Ethelburga’s Admissions Team can provide further information and help arrange a visit to see for yourself what makes them so special.Visit www.qe.org or email admissions@qe.org
