Ask the property expert WITH JORDAN YORATH FROM MONROE ESTATE AGENTS. ordan has a wealth of knowledge about the property market and has worked within the property sector excelling in buying, selling, investments, developments and buy-to-let on a national and local level since 2005. Jordan launched Monroe Estate Agents alongside his partner Leanna Corban in 2020 which focuses on the North Leeds premium property market.

Kate from Alwoodley asked: Is now a good time to sell my property? It’s a great time to sell at the moment, however I would avoid putting your property on the market from midDecember to Christmas Day when everyone is extremely busy. From Boxing Day onwards is a great time to launch your property on the market as there is always a flurry of people looking to view at that time. We are valuing up to ten properties weekly at the moment and there is certainly a lack of supply compared to the demand for homes currently, particularly over £1,000,000 in North Leeds. There is consistently an overwhelming demand for properties between £400,000 to £1,000,000 in North Leeds, which is our core location. There is also a huge demand for lateral living - people looking to buy properties on a single level, downsizing from large properties to bungalows and single level apartments. Bungalows in particular are in very high demand at the moment and we’re always keen to work with anyone looking to sell this kind of property as they are selling at a premium.
David from Roundhay asked: How long does selling a property take? From valuation, the property can be live on the market within seven days. We will then generally hold a dedicated viewing day 7-9 days after the property launches online. We have seen houses moving very
Jordan and Leanna
quickly due to the current high demand and we’ve seen a few houses sold within ten days of initial marketing launch or less, which is incredible. Because we’re regularly dealing with people who are in the market for premium properties in Leeds, we can quickly speak with buyers who might have missed out on a property or are looking for something specific. This intimate knowledge of the premium market - active buyers and vendors - means we can move quickly.
If you would like to speak to Jordan about selling your property or ask him a question about the property market email hello@monroeestateagents.com You can see the properties they currently have listed at www.monroeestateagents.com

Magic and wonder THE NEW STAGE PRODUCTION OF BEDKNOBS AND BROOMSTICKS IS AS EVERY BIT AS GROUND-BREAKING AS THE FILM, SAYS ACTRESS DIANNE PILKINGTON. Images courtesy Johann Persson

ren’t we due a bit of magic in our lives? Dianne Pilkington thinks so. She is staring in Bedknobs and Broomsticks, and she, for one, is thrilled to be dreaming of the impossible again. The show, which opens at the Leeds Grande Theatre on 8 December, is the first ever stage adaptation of the 1971 Disney favourite and has been brought to life by award-winning theatre-makers Candice Edmunds and Jamie Harrison. Pilkington says the production is every bit as ground-breaking as the movie, with its famous blend of live action, animation and musical numbers. “It’s my first theatre job back,” says the Wigan-born actor who plays Miss Eglantine Price, the trainee witch. “It is fun, it is full of magic and it takes you on a different journey from the adventure we’ve been on for the last year and a half. It is what the world needs right now.” “The film was doing something new and innovative, and so are we,” says the West End star, whose roles include Glinda in Wicked, Donna in Mamma Mia! and Elizabeth in Young Frankenstein. “It is faithful to what people love about Bedknobs and Broomsticks but this creative team never make the obvious choice. They have an amazing creative brain.” Set in the darkest days of the Second World War, Bedknobs and Broomsticks is about the three Rawlins children who have been evacuated from London. Finding themselves in the fictional Dorset town of Pepperinge Eye, they are put in the care of the eccentric Miss Price who is less interested in looking after them than in completing her studies in magic. Before they know it, she is casting spells on their bed and sending them skywards on a magical adventure. “She’s very quirky,” laughs Pilkington. “She‘s a woman who has lived on her own for a long time and has not had much love for a really long time. We’ve been exploring the scary side but there has to be a joy in her too. There’s a real relish in being an apprentice witch.”
A
Long before she got the part, Pilkington was an admirer of Angela Lansbury who immortalised the role of Eglantine Price on film. She’d even got the merchandise. “One of the first masks I bought at the beginning of the pandemic was Angela Lansbury in Murder She Wrote,” she says. “The rest of the cast think it’s hilarious but I didn’t buy it for this – it’s just mine!” She is, though, determined to make the part her own: “I’m a huge fan of hers but I’m not like her at all. Also we’re in a different time. I’ve tried to come it at it from a modern point of view, even though it’s still set in wartime.” When she wants to check she’s on the right lines, Pilkington has the perfect audience on hand. Her sounding board is her eight-year-old son. “I’ve been practising on Hugo,” she says. “I’ve shown him my magic tricks and he doesn’t know how they’re done, which is gratifying.” She adds: “He’s convinced the broom is on rocket boosters and he could be right – who will ever know?” As well as the original score, the show features Sherman brothers songs that were dropped from the film, plus new material by Neil Bartram who has worked closely with Brian Hill on the stage adaptation. With the additional songs, it has become a full-blown musical. “Substitutiary Locomotion is one of the best numbers I’ve ever sung,” says Pilkington. “I get so excited, I actually do believe I’m magic and casting a spell. When you’re in the middle of that on stage it’s fabulous.” Bringing her up to speed on the art of magic is co-director Jamie Harrison. He is the man who created the stage illusions in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and once had to perform a magic trick for JK Rowling herself. He has also worked on Charlie on the Chocolate Factory in the West End and Pinocchio at the National Theatre, as well as all the shows for Vox Motus, the Glasgow company he runs with the other co-director, Candice Edmunds. “At the core of Harry Potter is the
human being,” says Harrison. “What I learnt was that magic really works if it’s part of the personality of the character who is performing it. That’s something we’re working with in Bedknobs and Broomsticks. We wanted it to feel charming with a sense of childhood imagination, but at the same time be allowed to take flight.” Candice Edmunds says the fantasy emerges from the stress of the poor children who were evacuated during the war. “Using fantasy to bring respite from trauma is really timely,” she says. “It feels more than ever we want something to lift us out of our situation. The children are in the depths of a traumatic upheaval and fantasy helps to offer relief from all the dark forces closing in around them. It’s very cleverly written to show the way a small child would imagine solutions to problems.” Edmunds, who grew up in Australia and South Africa before moving to Glasgow, can’t believe she has the chance to direct a show that played a formative role in her childhood. “When I was about eight, we spent some time in a small town called Maun in Botswana where my aunt lives,” she says. “There wasn’t much to do there except raid her VHS collection. Pretty much the only kids’ film she had was Bedknobs and Broomsticks. My sister and I watched it over and over again. It has a really special place in my heart.” In making the switch to the stage, Bedknobs and Broomsticks has become what Harrison calls “an emotionally powerful journey about belonging, commitment and family”. It is a shift in emphasis that made Pilkington more determined than ever to get the part. “When I first read the script, I bawled my eyes out for the last ten minutes to the point when my husband was quite worried,” she says. “What they’ve done with the story is incredibly moving.” For more information or to purchase tickets, call 0113 243 0808 or visit https://leedsheritagetheatres.com/whatson/bedknobs-and-broomsticks/ Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk 17

s someone who’s not ashamed to admit they love Christmas, excitement levels for me this year have reached fever pitch, rivalling the mini-me of the late eighties. But, instead of getting all giddy over a new Gameboy, I just can’t wait to celebrate with everyone properly this year. Looks like I’m not the only one going big this year either, as my diary is crammed with festive events. Christmas tipis, Chowdown Winter Fest and a host of other winter events are everywhere, and I’m not complaining one bit. It’s going to be a good one, I can feel it. foodie innovation everywhere I go. One of my long-time favourite lunch spots, Blackhouse, have continued the trend for being consistently brilliant with their latest offering. Of course, their steaks always hit the mark, but don’t sleep on the rest of the menu. Their pork chop sharer is divine, whilst their Cottage Pie, with its 14 hr slow-cooked brisket, melts in the mouth like a snowflake. So good. The Alchemist have stepped things on with their latest plates, proving there’s more to them than mixology magic. If their Smoking Boards with Miso-Glazed Salmon and Lamb Kofta don’t quite hit the mark, then their Crispy Chicken in a

Basket with a side of Truffle Gravy might just do the trick. Truffle gravy is officially my new food obsession. And you can’t go to this bar without enjoying one of their famous cocktails, I’d highly recommend the Falling Apple. Just round the corner at the venue formerly known as the iconic Leeds Club, Lost and Found continues to impress with its super deluxe interiors and tempting menus.Their restaurant is one of the most stunning places to eat in the city, and their Masala Fish & Chips with poppy seed batter and spiced triple cooked chips is a dish you won’t forget in a hurry. For all the interior design junkies constantly on the hunt for something different, I can’t recommend The Collective any higher.Taking inspiration from the LA creative scene, the venue allows guests to enjoy exceptional food in stunning surroundings, whilst being able to purchase everything they see around them, from the furniture to furnishings. Located opposite the train station on Boar Lane, it’s the perfect place to do business or catch up with friends whilst soaking up the dreamy visuals with brands such as Stucco & Stucco and Tyson Lighting on display. Just be warned, lunching there can get pricey when you’re walking away with a new dining room furniture set. If you’re on the lookout for a new haunt with your drinking buddies over the party season, you need to seek out Canal Club in the now thriving Granary Wharf. Boasting killer looks and a hedonistic atmosphere, this new kid on the block is designed for those looking to inject a little party atmosphere into their daytime sessions. Think decadent brunches, great live entertainment and cocktails inspired by the worlds best party capitals and you’re there. Destined to be my central Leeds hangout spot this winter for sure. The ultimate guide to winter hair WE SPOKE TO HAIR RITUEL BY SISLEY’S UK AMBASSADOR, MIGUEL PEREZ. inter can be the most wonderful time of year - but it can play havoc with your hair. The cold air and central heating strips moisture, leaving your locks looking lifeless, brittle and dull. Not ideal when you have a raft of invitations for exciting events waiting for you. But worry not, there are a few things you can do to keep your hair in tip-top condition and we’re here to help. After speaking to renowned beauty brand Sisley, we have all the info about their revitalising products perfect for your new winter routine. Sisley’s right, haircare is the new skincare, so… Sisley has options for their revitalising shampoo, whether you are smoothing or volumising, they have you covered. Being sulphate free, means your natural oils and keratin can develop, helping your hair’s condition without being stripped. The shampoos are also enriched with a

vitamins as active ingredients for restoration. The Reconstructing Conditioner pairs with the shampoo to coat and smooth your hair’s cuticles, increasing shine and improving resistance. With the cold weather fighting your hair’s health, this added resistance will make all the difference. Your shower routine can be finished with Sisley’s Regenerating Hair Care Mask, this emergency treatment repairs devitalised and sensitised hair. Through a high concentration of plant extracts, proteins, vitamins and minerals, the mask can restructure your hair fibres in four weeks, leaving your hair radiant with vitality. Unfortunately, our scalps also suffer the consequences of winter; with the Revitalizing Fortifying Serum you can boost your scalp’s energy, fortifying your hair. As Sisley’s most technical hair product, the analysed science behind the serum proves the product to be
spectacularly effective, with very positive results, especially for hair loss. Finally, your routine can finish with the Precious Hair Care Oil for glossiness and nutrition. Now your hair is begging to heal and restore, you can focus on getting back your shine by creating a film of light around the fibre, thanks to the nourishing and softening oil ingredients. This step not only adds radiance for the day ahead, but leaves your hair primed for styling. Sisley started working on the Hair Rituel project five years ago after they decided there was a need for a dedicated range which treats both the scalp and hair fibres concurrently. Miguel Perez is the UK ambassador for Hair Rituel and knows a thing or two about giving your hair the best treatment during the winter months. Hair Rituel’s six essential treatment products can help to give your hair the luxury you crave, but paired with the best methods and tips, your hair will get everything it deserves.
031 NSide Dec21 22/11/2021 11:50 Page 1
Here are Miguel’s five tips to make sure your hair looks and feels fabulous this Christmas.
1. Colour Don’t trust the model on the box! The colour always ends up lighter than the one shown so it’s always better to look at the chart on the top of the box to get a better idea of what the colour will end up looking like on your own hair. For permanent dye, choose a colour a touch darker than what you want because of the strong developer within the formula. With semi-permanent dye however, choose a shade slightly on the lighter side of the colour you’re looking to achieve.
is also key. Make sure you have a proper consultation, and really talk about your lifestyle; if you exercise, how much time you are willing to spend on your hair each day etc. I would also always recommend bringing a picture and never go for a big change if you are not feeling your best – you might end up regretting it!
4. Style Moving your parting over to the side is the easiest way to make your style look like an entirely new haircut. Instead of using gel for a wet look, use either conditioner or a hair mask, such as Hair Rituel by Sisley Regenerating Hair Care
2. Health If you have fine hair it’s best to avoid creamy shampoos as these can be heavy and weigh the hair down. Also try not to wash fine hair every day as this can make it feel limp. However, if you do need to wash daily, only shampoo once and make sure you’re using a gentle daily shampoo such as Hair Rituel by Sisley Volumizing Shampoo. You should only ever shampoo from your roots to the mid-shafts of your hair.
Mask. It will set as a gel but you will be conditioning the hair at the same time as achieving your desired look. I love waves like Margot Robbie’s with a side parting and volume, achieved using a round brush. To recreate this look, use a medium inch curling iron to curl the hair, pulling on each one to create long, lean waves.
5. Salon secrets Make sure you speak the same language as your stylist, meaning that when it comes to technical words, you know exactly what they are talking about. Go for a style or colour that is easy for you to look after and maintain. There is no point in going for something that will only look nice only for a short period of time.
3. Cut For me it’s all about following the natural hair texture, while it’s important to keep your strands healthy in order for them to look their best, the right haircut

Is it time for a new hip? GEORGE WHITWELL – JOINT MOTION HEALTHCARE CONSULTANT PROVIDES HIS THOUGHTS ON HIP REPLACEMENT SURGERY. ip arthritis is a common condition affecting the hip joint and may occur in as much as 20 per cent of the population. Hip arthritis is more common in people over the age of 65 years but can affect people of all ages. There are several risk factors for developing the disease but most cases have no direct underlying cause. The hip joint is a ‘ball and socket” joint and is normally covered with a thick layer of smooth cartilage. When the hip becomes arthritic the cartilage layer becomes thinner, eventually disappearing all together exposing the underlying bone. Without the protective cartilage layer the hip joint becomes painful and stiff. Symptoms of hip arthritis genuinely begin gradually and worsen with time. The most common symptom is pain. The pain can be felt in the groin, the side of the hip or in the buttock region. Sometimes the pain spreads down the thigh to the knee. Activities such as walking or prolonged periods of standing often worsen the problem. Joint stiffness causes problems with activities such as putting on shoes and socks or getting in and out of a car. Eventually these symptoms begin to affect patients on a daily basis
H
and overall mobility and function is reduced, walks with family and friends or sporting activities may become difficult or no longer possible. Fortunately, there are a range of highly effective treatments for hip arthritis. These include simple conservative measures such as pain medication, hip joint injections through to operative solutions. At Joint Motion Healthcare we understand the importance of recommending the right treatment at the right time. During the clinic consultation a complete history regarding your symptoms will be taken followed be a physical examination. X-ray investigations are normally performed at the same consultation.Your consultant will then be able to discuss the severity of the problem and offer an experienced opinion regarding the best treatment option for you.
Hip replacement surgery is an extremely successful solution for painful debilitating hip arthritis. Modern hip replacements are expected to last at least 25 years. Joint Motion Healthcare consultants tailor the surgery to the patient by carefully selecting implants from a small range of proven implant designs. Your consult will discuss the procedure with you including any potential surgical risks and what can be expected during the recovery period. Most patients recover quickly from hip replacement surgery, many patients are discharged from hospital the following day. Physiotherapy is normally commenced the same day as the surgery and the exercise programme continues for several weeks in the outpatient department. Patients can expect to return to all their normal activities three months following their surgery. Operation dates are arranged to suit patients and waiting times are short at our chosen Leeds hospitals. Joint Motion Healthcare consultations are available weekdays and evenings at Spire Leeds hospitals and Nuffield Leeds hospitals. Arrange an appointment with a Joint Motion Healthcare consultant.

A faster way to get your glow back I wish I had known about this treatment a long time ago, it would have saved me money on skincare that didn’t actually help my skin. I had stubborn pigmentation and, no doubt, here the pigmentation made my skin look worse than it was and made me look older than I am (nobody wants that). The pigmentation I had would shine through any foundation, nothing would cover my dark patches. In my career I am surrounded by extremely talented aestheticians and skin doctors. I was invited to Skin Doctor Clinics to try Lumecca IPL treatment, which uses photothermolysis, a method of applying intense pulsed lights to target pigmented skin and vascular lesions. The treatment improves the complexion and clarity of your skin whilst also improving the appearance of sun damage and redness on the skin. MUSTY Lumecca is ideal for: age spots, pigmentation, freckles, scarring - this treatment R T improves the overall quality of the skin. After only one treatment my pigmentation was gone. Plus, my skin is truly glowing. To learn more about this treatment go to skindoctorclinics.com
We love… In recent months I noticed my hair became dry and I was losing a lot of it. I turned to Amla Oil, a natural oil used for health that contains extracts from the Indian gooseberry. It is traditionally made by drying the fruit and immersing it in a base oil for a duration after which the oil is filtered and purified. Amla Oil is said to stimulate hair growth and prevent hair loss and premature greying. When used as a hair treatment, Amla OIl is applied to the scalp or face. My hair is now nourished and I have noticed substantial decrease in my hair and I think you should try it. 36 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

1. VITAMIN A QUESTION: I have been told I need to have a total knee replacement and I have heard about ‘ROSA robot-assisted knee replacement surgery’. What does this involve and how does it differ from traditional surgery? ANSWER:
Knee arthritis is a common condition that affects people of all ages and activity levels. It causes pain and stiffness which limits the activities they can do. A knee replacement is a treatment option when all non-surgical treatment methods have failed. Total knee replacement is one of the commonest and most successful operations available for painful, arthritic knees. Advances in technology and imaging have allowed the development of Robotic Assisted Surgery in various surgical fields. ROSA is the latest addition to this growing list and assists the operating surgeon in performing a knee replacement. ROSA is unique in not needing any special scans prior to surgery. It allows the surgeon to record the individual characteristics of the patient’s leg as well as the knee at the start of the operation. This enables the surgeon to plan the operation in real time and throughout the range of movement of the knee as well as choosing the best implant for the patient. The planning step is followed by the preparation of the knee for the implants. Here, ROSA enables the surgeon to place the implants in the best position for the individual patient. It does this by only allowing the surgeon to make cuts in the bone in the previously planned positions. By assisting the surgeon in these planning and surgical steps of a knee replacement ROSA allows the patient to have a more individual and accurate knee replacement. This will improve recovery, function achieved, longevity and satisfaction.

The MVP of the skincare game (with good reason), this is an absolute multitasker.Vitamin A is key in new cell development and repair, improving collagen production and reducing sebum production, meaning it is also great for acne prone skin. From over the counter Retinol to more potent Retinoic acid (this will need to be prescribed), gradually add this into your evening routine for seriously GLOWING skin.
2. SUNSCREEN Sunscreen should be the final step in your morning routine ALL YEAR ROUND. Ensure it is broad spectrum (UVA and UVB) and at least SPF 30; a higher SPF equals higher protection. Believe me, this may be the greatest investment you could make for youthful looking skin.
3. VITAMIN C Another powerhouse ingredient that is a potent antioxidant helping to brighten, even skin tone and improve pigmentation.
4). AHA/BHA ACIDS Swap any ‘beaded’ exfoliators for these acid alternatives that help remove dead cells and improve texture as well as fine lines and wrinkles. Look for ingredients like glycolic/lactic acid (AHA) and salicyclic acid (BHA).
5. MOISTURISER Whatever your skin type (including oily skin), giving it hydration is even more important in the winter months. Use a moisturiser twice a day for improved skin texture and radiance. CHRISTMAS
It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas... GET CRAFTY THIS CHRISTMAS AND MAKE YOUR OWN BEAUTIFUL WREATH BY FOLLOWING OUR SIMPLE STEPBY-STEP GUIDE. BY MARIA ILIFFE.
Step 1 – Metal ring Start with your circle metal ring, used as a frame for the wreath.
If you’ve taken up a new hobby or pastime over the last 18 months or so, you’re definitely not alone. Forced to find ways to keep ourselves occupied, many people have turned to DIY and crafty home improvements/decorations, to re-ignite their creativity. Wreath making is a brilliant way to try your hand at craft, learn a new skill, or indulge in your passion. Remaining one of the only ways to decorate your doors – and certainly the best – wreaths provide the perfect seasonal addition to your home. With that in mind, we have spoken to
I
38 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk
local florist April Bell, who designs gorgeous wreaths and bouquets. April and right-hand girl Jasmine, shared their expertise and together we’ve created this step-by-step guide to help you get in the festive spirit. Whether you want to gather foliage and autumnal greenery from your garden and local parks, or buy a pack online or from a florist, the same method can still be applied. The leaves and decoration are suggestions and the steps are for guidance, so feel free to get inspired and interpret this is your own way, making a completely unique yet beautiful wreath.
What you will need: Scissors/secateurs Wire wreath ring Sphagnum Moss Seasonal evergreen foliage Natural twine 12-inch 20-gauge floristry wire Seasonal decorations *** A big thank you to April at Monica F Hewitt Florist. monicafhewitt.co.uk

CHRISTMAS
Steps 2 & 3 – Mossing
Step 4 – Collect foliage
Tie one end of your natural twine to the outer rim of the wreath ring. Then gather a handful of Sphagnum moss, place onto the wreath ring, and bind around leaving an inch gap between each bind. To ensure the moss is well bound, create plenty of tension when binding. Repeat the above process until the entire wreath ring is covered. (This will be needed for step 10).
Gather a selection of the foliage you wish to use, you can take leaves from trees, bushes or plants; alternatively, you can purchase some online or form a florist.
Step 5 – Prep foliage
Step 6 – Arrange foliage
Step 7 – Wire foliage
Cut your foliage into usable hand sized pieces. Strip any lower leaves creating approximately 1 inch of a clean stem. This will help in the following steps.
Now evenly distribute your foliage into a minimum of 15 mixed foliage bundles. You will want 3 to 5 stems in each.
Take a 20-gauge wire and bend the top 2 inches to create a hair pin. Gather one of your foliage bundles, keeping all the clean stems together.
Step 8 – Wrap wire Place the bend of the wire at the back of the stems holding securely in place with your fingers. (Making sure the wire is following the same direction). Using the long piece of wire, tightly bind around the stems. A maximum of 4 binds is required to ensure enough wire is remaining. (This is known as a single leg mount). This is important for the following step. The quicker you bind, the tighter and more secure your bundle will be.
Step 9 – Wired bundles Repeat this step for all 15 of your foliage bundles. Continued on the next page > Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk 39
040 NSide Dec21 23/11/2021 12:30 Page 1
CHRISTMAS
Step 10 – Attach foliage bundles
Step 11 – Bend wire
Step 12 – Attach foliage bundles
Use the long piece of wire to pierce through the top of the mossed ring and tightly pull through the back until the stems are laid flush to the moss.
The wire at the back can now be pulled tightly and bent back into the moss ensuring no sharp wires are left.
Repeat this process. The top of each bundle is to slightly overlay the stems of the previous bundle. You will also want to follow a herringbone pattern which will help achieve a strong circular shape.
Step 13 – Half covered
Step 14 – Finish foliage
Step 15 – Prepare accessories
Once you’ve added half of your bundles, the wreath should look something like this, with no gaps.
Continue adding the rest of your bundles in the same pattern, pulling the wire tight and leaving no gaps.
Time to get festive! Choose the perfect accessories for you. You can use anything from dried flowers, pinecones, and cinnamon sticks to baubles, fairy lights – anything with sparkle.
Step 16 & 17 – Wire pinecone
Step 18 – Wire accessories
The single leg mount wiring technique as used in step 3 can be utilized to wire many different accessories. However, you may need to try each decoration individually to discover the best attachment method. For example, a pinecone can look quite tricky to wire but by using the natural ridges you can easily slot the wire into the pinecone. After bending it round, secure the wire by twisting the short and long sides together.
Follow a similar technique for your pother accessories, slotting and then wrapping the wire best you can, to get a strong hold.

CHRISTMAS
Step 19 – Decorate!! Let your creativity run wild! Now that all your accessories are prepared and wired. You’ll be able to follow the same technique that we used when attached the foliage bundles to the mossed wreath ring. To create a traditional style, you’ll want to evenly space your decorations through the wreath. If you’re wanting a more modern style, grouping your materials is a great way to achieve this look.
Step 20 – Hang your wreath proud! A finished wreath can look something like this.

Style and luxury RICHARD ABBEY FINDS SOMETHING SPECIAL IN THE HEART OF THE YORKSHIRE DALES NATIONAL PARK.
orebridge House Hotel, situated in the village of Bainbridge in the Yorkshire Dales, was recently voted one of the most romantic hotels in the UK. It’s stunning countryside location, sandwiched between the rivers Ure and Bain, is a huge draw for those looking for somewhere special to celebrate. I’m sure my wife would have loved it, should she have been able to join me on my midweek visit; unfortunately work commitments (she’s a teacher) meant that I had to travel north alone. I drew a few curious glances from other guests during dinner, but felt completely at relaxed and was made to feel welcome by the wonderful staff at the hotel. If you haven’t visited before,

house and school and was the head office for the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority before current owners, David and Charlotte Reilly, bought the property in 2006. An 18month floor-toceiling renovation restored many of its original features and created 12 individually-designed - and named bedrooms. I stayed in ‘Mougins’, also known as the ‘French room’, which was furnished in creams, whites and greys and had bedside chandeliers and French carved furniture. After arriving in darkness, I couldn’t appreciate the breath-taking views over the gardens and surrounding countryside until I threw open the curtains the following morning. Checked-in and suitably refreshed, thanks to the Edwardian style en-suite which had a huge walk-in shower, Molton Brown toiletries and complimentary use of a robe and slippers, I headed downstairs for a predinner drink in the bar. The hotel was fully booked on the evening of my visit and the restaurant and lounge areas were already buzzing with conversation. Perched on a bar stool, I chatted with staff whilst perusing an extensive drinks menu which included lots of Yorkshire gins, English wines as well as ales from Yorkshire breweries including Black Sheep and the Yorkshire Dales Brewing Co. I tried a Yorebridge pale ale from the latter which was light and mellow with just a hint of hoppiness. The restaurant at Yorebridge House Hotel, led by head chef Dan Shotton, is highly regarded and achieved 3 AA Rosette status in 2014. The evening set menu is priced at £75 for five courses and includes a choice of starters, mains and desserts as well as an amuse bouche, pre-dessert and tea and coffee with petit fours. After choosing a Nero D’Avola to go
with my meal I took my seat in the restaurant which is housed in the orangery. It’s a simple, unfussy but cosy space with lots of wood and warm colours. The amuse bouche came in the form of a sweetcorn veloute topped with crispy pancetta and was just delicious. The light, soup-style texture had just the right consistency and was full of flavour. My choice of starter was cured salmon, winter radish and Whitby crab and was perhaps my favourite dish of the night. Beautifully presented, the generous portion of fish had been cured in salt, sugar and lemon zest and had an incredibly delicate flavour which balanced perfectly with the crunchy radishes and sweet crabmeat. A dill cream added extra flavour. For mains I stuck to the Yorkshire theme with venison, which was served with heritage beetroot and chorizo jam and partnered perfectly with my glass of Sicilian red. I particularly like the jam which gave the dish an extra hit of smokiness. A pre-dessert of lemon posset, blackberry and cherry was the ideal palate-cleanser whilst my main dessert of a brown butter financier, Granny Smith apple and vanilla ice cream was sweet and delicious. A financier is a small cake which was deliciously soft and well complemented by the apple and almost
toffee-like flavours. Sticky and indulgent it was a real winner. I took my coffee in the lounge in front of the open fire before retiring to my room. After enjoying those aforementioned views in the morning I returned to the orangery for a breakfast that reached those high standards set by dinner. A starter of yoghurt and berry compote and mini pastries was followed by a hearty Yorebridge breakfast and, of course, lashings of Yorkshire Tea. The bacon, sausage, eggs and black pudding on the plate were all sourced locally and cooked really well and made for the perfect start to the day. Yorebridge House Hotel also serves afternoon tea and is a popular weddings and events venue but I’d highly recommend it for dinner, bed and breakfast. I just need to take my wife next time. Hot stuff WE SATISFY OUR SPICY CRAVINGS WITH A VISIT TO SUKHOTHAI LEEDS. eing the heat and spice freak I am, I just love to try new dining experiences that combine the two. However, the choice of authentic Thai food is vast and given a choice of an evening spent, and of course hard cash, with Sukhothai or somewhere new, I’m happy to say, Sukhothai wins hands down. It’s like betting on the favourite each way at the races, you’re just not going to be disappointed. Of course the element of surprise is always a good emotion, but as the menu is so vast, it could take a good while to munch, and in my case, sip your way through it. And so we were off to Sukhothai in South Parade to be exact, right in the centre of Leeds. If you’re familiar with Sukhothai’s Leeds city centre restaurant, at first glance it pretty much looks like business as usual. However major changes have taken place behind the scenes with new dishes added to a menu that had remained constant for over 15 years. The menu is also a lot more readerfriendly, thanks to some clever streamlining. So what’s missing? Nothing as far as I can tell; there is certainly no shortage of

choice with familiar favourites still present, alongside some exciting new additions reflecting up-to-the-minute trends in Thai restaurant cuisine and street food. So if you love authentic Thai food but find the process of selecting from a seemingly endless array of curries, salads, stir-fries, rice and noodles just too exhausting, the good news is that Sukhothai have distilled their formidable food knowledge into one easy-to-read masterclass in taste and texture. It’s still worth taking a few minutes to
make your choices, especially with new dishes to consider, so select a cocktail from the very smart bar and relax. Our evening began with a couple of classic cocktails - The Thaistar Martini, an awesomely sharp blend of vodka, passion fruit and lemon juice served with a shot of Prosecco on the side and a Slingsby Harrrogate gin and tonic, and seeing as they’ve gone to the trouble to introduce some new dishes, it seemed rude not to try them out, alongside a few of the old classics. The entrees quickly arrived and, I’m

pleased to say, they didn’t take away the superb prawn crackers. We started with Poh Taek soup, three chillies strength, and my utterly all time favourite. Or so I thought (more about that in the next starter). It was a hot and sour mixed seafood soup with fresh Thai herbs, and boy, the liquid was spicy hot but the subtle blends of seafood balanced the dish perfectly. Not a spoonful was left. Mueg Sukhothai – squid in light batter dusted with a Tom Yum seasoning and served with a spicy Sriracha sauce – was placed opposite me and I suddenly became envious of my companion’s choice. Happily he was generous with his, ‘would you like to try some?’ It was beautiful and perfectly cooked and my next visit will definitely include this. The portion was plenty and would certainly satisfy anyone who wanted to substitute their main meal with a large starter – throw in a portion of noodles and it’s more than ample. For mains, Pad Prik Gang had another three chilli rating, although I have to say, I wouldn’t have noticed; if you like hot food like me, I would recommend asking for more heat. Pad Prik Gang is spicy stir-fry king prawns with a fiery red curry paste, green beans, mushroom, red pepper, carrot and lime leaves. It was everything it described and was as tasty as you can imagine. The king prawns were large and meaty and plentiful, again, if you wanted to pick and mix between two mains ordered, the portion was large enough.
“Mueg Sukhothai – squid in light batter dusted with a Tom Yum seasoning and served with a spicy Sriracha sauce – was placed opposite me and I suddenly became envious of my companion’s choice.” My companion, not as adventurous as me, opted for a very smooth Gang Panaeng, a traditional Thai red curry with chicken, made with coconut milk, red and green peppers, carrot, sweet basil, and bamboo shoots. It had a one chilli rating that would bore the socks off me, but by the look on his face whilst tucking in, he was in heaven. A mix of noodles and Jasmine rice completed the meal both traditionally and perfectly. It goes without saying, as with all four of the Sukhothai restaurants, service was up there with any five-star restaurant; it was quick, although I noticed a couple of diners opposite us slowed their meal
right down so they could enjoy their dining experience at their own pace. The staff didn’t let head chef of the group and owner Ban Kaewkraikhot down. Beautiful. Sukhothai 15 South Parade, Leeds, LS1 5QS Tel: 0113 242 2795 www.sukhothai.co.uk

EATING OUT
Fun and flavour MARIA ILIFFE’S RECENT VISIT TO CROSS GATES WAS FAR FROM A GREEK TRAGEDY. orbas, owned and run by brother and sister Besmir and Giona, is a beautifully traditional Greek restaurant that produces fine, authentic cuisine. Nestled in the heart of Cross Gates, a short ten-minute drive from Leeds city centre, this up and coming location proves perfect for a night out enjoying food and drinks. Greeted with the welcoming arms of Besmir, my father and I got seated in the window. Even though the restaurant is small, you can’t shake the feeling you’re in a popular restaurant on a Greek island, filled with locals drowning out the music with laughter and conversations. As a self-proclaimed Greek food and drink connoisseur, my father is proud to have sailed round many Greek islands, sampling some of the finest local delights. Remaining true to this authentic experience, he enjoyed a traditional Greek beer, Mythos (£3.74), which met his high expectations, tasting like he was back on holiday. Browsing the menu was probably the hardest job of the night; how you decide which delicious dish to pick? The choice was impressive, offering mains, grills, fish, pasta and vegetarian options. I am still impressed that a small restaurant can easily, quickly and very tastefully produce such a wide variety.
Z
Choosing starters was a challenge when everything looks – and smells – amazing, but that’s a problem I welcome! The menu provides a conglomeration of traditional dishes, even just to start with you can chose from calamari, bruschetta greca, kotopitan and much much more. I chose the saganaki (£5.95), pan-fried halloumi with honey and lemon dressing, and my father chose Garides Me Feta (£7.95), kind prawns, garlic, feta cheese, onion, chilli, home made tomato sauce and parsley served with pitta. If we were not already impressed with the food, drinks and service, the starters added to our delight. My fried halloumi was a perfect juxtaposition of a crunchy fried exterior and soft salty inside. The sweet (honey) and bitter (lemon) dressing, completed this delicious contrast. My father was taken aback by the generous portion size of his and further enjoyed the prawns and tomato melting his mouth with flavour. My father chose Besmir’s recommended Kleftiko (£16.95), slow cooked lamb with carrots, potatoes, olives, onion, garlic and cheese. As much as Pitta Falafel (£10.95) did not disappoint, my father’s Kleftiko was truly extraordinary. I thought at first I was so amazed because I am a vegetarian that is amazes me, but looking up at my dad’s face when this, meaty
selection of succulent lamb was brought over, still in the papery bowl it was cooked in, containing all of the cooking juices and flavour, seasoning the lamb right up until it reaches his fork. After we had finished marvelling and photographing his meal, we tucked in. My vegetarian dish came as a generous plate of chips and cone. The pitta formed the base of the wrapped cone, allowing to once again marvel in its freshness, topped with pieces of seasoned falafel, tzatziki, tomato, salad and onions. As a fussy eater, I was expecting to dislike at least one thing about this meal, but there was nothing to fault, the food and service was impeccable and we’ve both said we look forward to returning, with friends and family to enjoy Zorbas again. The ‘bedrock’ of good education THE QUALITY MARK PROMOTES, SUPPORTS AND CELEBRATES PROGRESS AND IMPROVEMENTS MADE BY A SCHOOL IN ENGLISH AND MATHEMATICS. hapter House, the Early Years, Infants and Junior School at Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate has been re-awarded the prestigious Primary Quality Mark Award for English and Mathematics by the national programme The Quality Mark. This national accreditation is awarded to schools which meet the Quality Mark Standard and lasts for a period of three years, with Chapter House previously being awarded the Quality Mark in 2018. The Quality Mark promotes, supports and celebrates progress and improvements made by a school in English and Mathematics. Without these ‘basic skills’ of good communication, English and mathematical skills, individuals are disadvantaged throughout their lives – as learners, in the workplace and as parents, consumers and citizens and so they form the ‘bedrock’ of good education. To achieve the Award, Chapter House went through a repeat of the assessment process carried out by

an external assessor against the ten ‘Elements’ of the Quality Mark framework. These cover key aspects of the school’s improvement approach, including the identification and analysis of the school’s needs; strategic planning; target setting for improvement; intervention and support for pupils under-achieving or under-attaining; provision of quality in both teaching and in resources; staff development; and active engagement with families. Renewal of the Award shows that effective monitoring and evaluation have
been in place since the previous Award in 2018. This new Award follows swiftly on from Chapter House being awarded the Primary Science Quality Mark (PQSM) Gilt, earned in June 2021. This accolade is given to schools which can demonstrate how established effective science leadership is having a sustained impact on science teaching and learning within a school. Karen Kilkenny, Head of Chapter House, said: “Thank you to Joanna Young, our Deputy Head, who has worked closely with staff to ensure that we have maintained our excellent standards since first being awarded the Primary Quality Mark in 2018. The award is a reflection of the high standards of teaching and the safe, happy, challenging environment we provide for the Chapter House children. Our children are eager to take risks and reflect on what they have learnt so they can be ready for any challenge they may face in the future.”
