We also take a look at some Yorkshire Dales trend-setters who are taking fashion sustainability to a whole new level. Elsewhere we go bold in our Home and Garden section with Pantone’s colours of the year and get the latest motoring news, Jordan Odu tells us what he’s been up to and we have the best fashion, beauty and accessories. Enjoy your conservatory all year round SAGARS’ REVOLUTIONARY 365 CONSERVATORY ROOF INSULATION SYSTEM KEEPS CONSERVATORIES WARM IN WINTER AND COOL IN SUMMER. onservatories have long been a desirable addition to the home but too often become neglected parts of the house if they’re too cold in winter and too hot in summer. But what if that could change? Sagars’ 365 conservatory roof insulation system can transform your conservatory and make it into a room you can use all year round . At this time of year it’s all about keeping warm and Sagars’ insulation system, originally believed to have been inspired by NASA, can do just that, as well as keeping you super cool in summer. The insulation is built up of complex layers of aluminium foil and insulation that is perfect for insulating conservatory roofs, reducing heat loss by about 95 per cent and keeping the heat out in summer. It’s finished with brilliant white tongue and groove insulated pvc panels to give a maintenance-free bright appearance. Using the 365 insulation system, Sagars, a family-based Yorkshire company, have been turning hundreds of draughty unused conservatories into rooms that can be used for any purpose, all year round. VAT is charged at five per cent as this type of insulation comes under the government’s energy savings rate. The cost of a 365 system is far less than you might think, with a 3m x 3m conservatory typically costing around £1,699 including VAT (interest free credit available over ten months). Fitting and comes with a ten-year guarantee. All work is completed in the day, following government social distancing guidelines to keep customers and fitters safe.

TRUSTPILOT FIVE-STAR REVIEWS: “What can I say apart from excellent. They arrived on time, did an excellent job, when finished left it as clean and tidy as it was when they arrived. It looks really good, very pleased and impressed with the quality of the work. Can’t believe how warm it is already. If you are thinking about it like I was, just get it done, you won’t regret it. Will definitely recommend.” Dawn, 5 January 2021 “Great company to do business with. Had my conservatory clad and now it’s a cosy functioning space. The two guys who attended were really nice and just got on with it and cleaned up after themselves. Great price too. Would definitely recommend.” Elaine, 8 January 2021 For more reviews, please search Trustpilot.

GARDENING
START THE NEW YEAR BY GETTING YOUR GARDEN IN ORDER. BY NIGEL EATON, HEAD OF RHS GARDEN HARLOW CARR SHOP & PLANT CENTRE. 1. Now is a good time to plant a small evergreen hedge, if the soil is not frozen, in less exposed gardens hedges can be grown such as Escallonia “Apple Blossom” or Photinia “Red Robin”. 2. Summer flowering bulbs will be arriving at your garden centre, look for the new varieties and store cool but frost free when you get them home until it is time to plant 3. Wisteria side-shoots can be cut back this month to encourage more flowers in the spring, cut back to about three buds from the main stems 4. Now is also the time to hard prune late flowering clematis such as the viticella varieties, these can be pruned to about 12 inches from the ground to encourage strong shoots in March. 5. Make a plan for the next couple of months of all the jobs you need to do so that you can adjust your tasks according to the prevailing weather conditions. Wet weather jobs in the shed still need doing however tempting an afternoon on the sofa with a cup of coffee is! There are some great garden
journals/diaries to help you stay organised in this way. 6. In the shed, get all you tools cleaned, disinfected and sharpened for the coming season. Remember if pruning out old or diseased stems on dormant plants, to disinfect the blades of your secateurs after each plant to stop cross contamination 7. Keep a close eye on emerging shoots and if a real cold snap is forecast have fleece or mulch available to cover tender shoots 8. Don’t be tempted to prune back ornamental grasses as these are often havens for overwintering beneficial insects. 9. Any bare root roses or fruit can be planted in mild weather, make sure you spread the roots and carefully back fill with soil and compost with an addition of Rootgrow to get the roots established. 10. Lift some strawberry plants and pots them up in 8-inch pots and put somewhere sheltered for an earlier crop.

Pulling out the stops WHO KNEW THAT BRAMLEY WAS THE HEART OF ORGAN PIPE MAKING? TERRY SHIRES IS A TRUE ARTISAN AND HIS WORK IS REVERED THE WORLD OVER. RICHARD ABBEY MEETS THE HEAD OF A FORWARD-LOOKING FAMILY AFFAIR. etting offered two jobs in one day is not something that happens very often but was a predicament Armley-born Terry Shires found himself in when leaving school at 16. “I’d just done my O-Levels and didn’t have a job,” he recalls. “I remember the careers officer at the time set us up with interviews, one of which was an engineers in Bramley. “So I went along and there must have been about 20 lathes in a row, it was the noisiest place, I couldn’t believe it. I was interviewed and got the job but I also had another interview at an organ pipe makers in Bramley called FJ Rogers. I walked into that shop and it was so much quieter and I knew straight away this was the place I wanted to work. It was just a feeling of wellbeing, it felt right.” And so began Terry’s apprenticeship in organ pipe making, which led to a lifelong love for manufacturing and resulting in him setting up his own business in Bramley, which has since taken him all over the world. “I did 13 years at FJ Rogers and then I

worked for another chap for ten years, Terry Davies, who’d also worked there,” says Terry. “But it was my wife, Annie, who really encouraged me to set up on my own. I started in 1998 and worked from my garage at home and was almost inundated straight away. “After 18 months of being in the garage I had to get a workshop and I set George Fowler on. Again, I’d worked with George at Rogers, I’d known him since I was 16. We got the premises where we are now [Spence Mills]. When FJ Rogers went into liquidation I set some of the lads on, I took what I would call the cream of them and then we formed the team that we have now. I think it’s the best team of pipe makers that have worked together, definitely that I’ve known in my working career.” The whole process of pipe making hasn’t changed since the monks made pipes all those centuries ago and everything at Terry’s workshop is made from flat sheet and manufactured by hand. The only machine they use is a guillotine to cut the metal. The tools of the trade are unique too, with many of them passed down through the generations.

“Some of my tools date back to 1880 and earlier than that. I know the names of the Worcester Cathedral pipe makers that Image courtesy Kenneth Tickell used them,” says Terry. “That’s how it works. The tools are passed on, as is the knowledge.” Terry has five other staff working for him including his son Chris, who joined the company seven years ago. It’s something he is particularly proud of. “Chris is turning out to be an absolutely wonderful pipe maker and I didn’t know whether he would to be honest. You never know,” explains Terry. “We thought he’d go onto university but when he was getting near to going to college after high school, he called us into a room and said ‘I’ve been thinking long and hard about this and I’d like to join dad’s company’. “You could have knocked me over when he said that because I didn’t think it was what he wanted to do. I never pushed him. I set him on, on a sixmonth trial, and we said to him ‘if the lads don’t think you can make it after six months, you won’t be working for us. That’s how we have to be, we turn out such quality, that if he couldn’t do it, he wouldn’t be invited to stay. Seven years later he’s turning out wonderful work.” Annie still helps out in the office with accounting and admin and completing the family circle is daughter Emily, who still helps out when she can, although 20 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk
she is now a master barber. A set of organ pipes is called a ‘stop’ and usually consists of 58 or 61 pipes. At Shires Organ Pipes, one stop is allocated to one man and is his to make from start to finish. Every stop is different and can range from 32 feet in length to just six inches and everything is hand-rolled, hand beaten and hand-soldered before being put together by specialist organ builders. If you look at the console of an organ,

above the keyboard you’ll see the white stop knobs. Each time one of those is out it releases all the pipes to the keyboard, heck the phrase, ‘pulling out the stops’. “The difference with our shop compared to pipe making shops in Germany or elsewhere on the continent is that they tend to do it on more of a conveyor belt system, they don’t give one stop to one man they would split it up and make one man do one particular part of the job,” comments Terry. “Our lads are fully trained and do everything from start to finish, they are very proud of what they do. At the end they will sign their name on the biggest pipe and date it and every man in the shop does that, we’ve always done that.” Four or five years ago, about ten per cent of Shires Organ Pipes’ work was outside the UK but that’s changed rapidly and they’re now doing about 5050 due to decreasing demand at home. “People are not really going to church

WHAT’S GOING ON LEEDS? JORDAN ODU COOKS UP A RECIPE FOR SUCCESS IN 2021.
ickstarting January in lockdown was not the new year I asked for, but we’ve just got to crack on and make the best of it. With the vaccine being rapidly rolled out, at least it feels like the beginning of the end (fingers and everything else crossed) is in sight. That said, I had an incredible Christmas and New Year and managed to pack in some awesome stuff in a short space of time. One such highlight was a last-minute getaway to the ever-awe-inspiring Crab & Lobster, where I enjoyed gourmet food, Champagne, and a night in the swanky Ruka Lodge. Reminiscent of an alpine ski lodge, complete with large hot tub and woodland setting, it was nice to have an evening where COVID and other such problems did not exist. The best part of 2021 so far for me has been the snow, which made for an excellent day of sledging at Roundhay Park. I’ve also been enjoying the crisp winter air walking round Harewood, using my new membership I kindly received from my mum for Christmas. It was great to have a nosy around the fantastic gardens on our daily walk. And, if like me you’ve been struggling to keep your walks fresh, I can highly recommend the White Fox Walking Project. Their Facebook page is loaded with walking routes that allow you to take in the best of Yorkshire’s rich and vastly underrated wildlife. Go check them out. As it’s now been almost a year since I last dropped into my local cinema, I was

eager to give Home Cinema Hire Leeds a shot. Designed to take the home movie experience to the next level, they offer both indoor and outdoor packages that are great for these long lockdown evenings. We squeezed in Clueless, Goodfellas, The Serpent and a Leeds United game, which were elevated to greatness with the HD 4K projector and giant screen. Essential for movie, gaming and sports lovers. Another thing I’ve been pining for is top-notch food in my favourite restaurants, so have taken up the challenge to cook more for myself. With
a little help from Nigella and some cook at home boxes from some of the city’s best venues, I’ve whipped up some impressive meals, even if I do say so myself. We ordered a cook at home box from Harvey Nichols Fourth Floor Brasserie, and it couldn’t have turned out any better. Curated by head chef Lee Heptinstall and his team, the threecourse meal boasted the same style and panache you’d expect in their restaurant. The Braised Ox Cheek with smoked beef fat carrots was melt in the mouth, and the Whipped Chocolate Ganache

and Orange Tart was a dessert fit for the gods. We upgraded our package to finish the meal off with a boozy Vesper Martini, as well as a round of luxurious Espresso Martinis and a nice bottle of Harvey Nichols Etna Rosso. Just a shame they don’t come do the washing up, because this was an otherwise flawless dining experience. Skipping back to New Year’s Eve, I enjoyed an incredible Tomahawk steak from Blackhouse along with all the trimmings and several bottles of wine. For something quick and easy, check out Fior Alba’s sushi at home kits, which can be prepped and ready within ten minutes. The next one on my list to try is Dishoom, watch this space for my feedback. But, with almost a year of little else but eating and drinking, I’m sure I’m not the only one who has more than just a little bit of festive fat to shift. To tackle this, I tried Fit 20, a new fitness studio that promises results with just 20 minutes of exercise per week. Ideal for anyone juggling work, kids, and
everything else in between. I really enjoyed my first session and will definitely head back when gyms reopen. I’ve also taken up the services of The Fit Guru PT and have been doing two gruelling 60 minutes in the park each week. I’d be lying if I said it was easy, but it seems to be working and I’m setting my sights on a chiselled beach bod in time for summer freedom. Wish me luck. For those of you that have been going into central Leeds, look out for some of the amazing art that’s popping up across the city. Artist Anthony Burrill and IN Good Company Leeds’ huge seven-storey YOU&ME, ME&YOU mural of positivity at the bottom of The Calls is really impressive. There’s also something for sports fans with Leeds legends Kalvin Phillips, Pablo Hernandez, and champion boxer Josh Warrington popping up on buildings across the city. That’s it from me this month, but stay safe, keep positive and I hope to see you sooner rather than later. Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk 23

DR MUHAMMED RAASHED IS A CONSULTANT RESPIRATORY PHYSICIAN AT AIREDALE NHS TRUST AND AT SPIRE LEEDS HOSPITAL IN ROUNDHAY. Question: I feel breathless on doing things I could easily do before. My doctor sent me to a cardiologist who tells me my heart is normal but my breathlessness is not improving. What should I do? Dr Raashed replied:
Breathlessness is a common problem and one that increasingly limits our functional capacity with age and diminishing fitness level. There are a number of causes for this and often we are focussed on a diagnosis related to heart or lungs. Careful assessment of both heart and lung conditions to clarify their relative contribution is important. Accurate assessment of lung health by detailed history – particularly occupational history, examination, lung function test and a chest X-ray is a good start. Occasionally, a CT scan of lungs and further lung function testing is required for clarity. Breathlessness can be caused by a number of different things and changes in weight and loss of fitness and conditioning can contribute significantly towards it. Advancing age with diminishing musculoskeletal reserves does not help matters. Often losing ten per cent in weight (if you are overweight) helps greatly together by increasing level of fitness. Health and lifestyle choices we make early on in our lives maintain our functional capacity for longer. Whilst maintaining a normal body mass index (BMI) and a certain level of fitness; it is important that people report changes they experience in their lives to their doctors so that early investigation can be performed. It is important for people with lung conditions such as Asthma or COPD to take inhalers as prescribed and monitor their condition regularly to maintain optimum lung health. To find out your Body Mass Index (BMI), go to our online calculator at www.spirehealthcare.com/weight-losssurgery/our-weight-loss-treatments/gastric-bypass/

Ready to wear (again) BASED IN THE YORKSHIRE DALES, NEARLY NEW CASHMERE COMPANY ARE SETTING THE STANDARD FOR FASHION SUSTAINABILITY. DAISY PERN SPOKE TO FOUNDER ALISON ORR. Alison Orr

ith sustainability the word on everybody’s lips, and the staggering statistics about the state of our planet presented to us daily, solutions as to how we can shop more consciously are a must. Nearly New Cashmere Company, a fashion retailer set in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales, are offering just that. It all began through the success of an eBay account selling second-hand clothes, when founder Alison Orr noticed that her cashmere products far outsold others, planting the seed to focus her attention on these garments. Her idea was to recycle pre-loved cashmere pieces and sell them on as “nearly new.” This innovative business model started
W
humbly through selling at Christmas fairs and shows, but its success and growth then allowed for Alison to open her own store. Set in the picturesque village of Masham, the gorgeous stone building oozes the countryside tradition of the local brand. Keeping things close to home and reducing the brand’s impact on the environment is hugely important to Alison and is embedded deep within the company’s ethos. “We cannot keep consuming,” Alison believes, after she was horrified to learn the vast quantity of waste produced by the fashion industry. “We need to start learning to make things last,” even if it means that your unwanted clothes find a new owner. Where people may have

FASHION
used to look down on wearing secondhand clothing, it is now seen as an attractive feature of the product. “There is never any resistance to the fact that the products are second-hand,” adds Alison, as many consumers are now much more conscious of their own consumption. “People see it as guilt-free shopping.” At Nearly New Cashmere Company, there is a dedicated team of local women who launder, recondition and repair the garments where necessary, before returning the items to be checked over by Alison. The amazing locality of the brand and keeping the work within the community is so refreshing and admirable to see; something that is very important to Alison and very much in-line with their sustainable ethos. Providing local residents with the chance to work for a sustainable fashion brand in the heart of the beautiful Yorkshire countryside is something you do not come across often, and it is a fantastic way to spread the word of such an important movement. Not only does the brand source cashmere products and make them “nearly new”, they also offer a repairs service for your own garments that are in need of a little TLC. Their highly skilled staff can repair or add embellishments to cover holes, breathing a new lease of life into your treasured pieces. This innovative service further supports the idea of a circular economy, where we stop throwing away items and make them last instead. If you’d rather find something new, they will also take in your unwanted cashmere items in exchange for vouchers or credit to spend with them in-store; the perfect way to refresh your wardrobe without over-consuming. The company champions affordability by allowing a new way to shop your favourite cashmere pieces, without the astonishing price tag, making these luxurious pieces accessible to all. They are honest and transparent throughout their supply chain and prioritise the welfare of workers and the responsible sourcing of their garments. The last six months have been challenging for any business, and it has been no different for Nearly New Cashmere. These unprecedented times have called for a rethink as to how they can adapt to this new way of shopping consumers and retailers have suddenly
been presented with. It has called for a huge upgrade within their online selling capabilities to cater this new environment where their traditional means of selling can no longer take place. Without shows and fairs, and lesser footfall into their store, the brand has had to undergo a large transformation allowing for a greater online distribution and marketing. Where the website used to be primarily used for follow-up purchases after seeing the brand at shows where they gained customer trust, it has now become their primary selling channel. “It has been an enormous challenge,” Alison explains, as they have learnt to adapt to this new way of consumption. However, there are also incredible positives to take from this as the company is seeing an impressive increase in sales and are now selling around 200 jumpers online a week; a credit to the resilience and hard work of the team. Nearly New Cashmere Company offers a wide range of garments that cater to men, women and children. Their beautiful ladies’ jumpers are priced between £22-80 and come in a variety of shapes and necklines to suit everyone. On top of this, they offer a wide range of accessories such as hats, scarves and gloves; perfect Christmas presents for
family members and loved ones this festive season. They’ll even take the stress of wrapping away by offering a paperfree wrapping service for you! Shopping isn’t for everyone, and it can often be hard choosing the most suitable style. Well, this stress can be eliminated by enjoying their bespoke in-store personal shopping experience. Their highly skilled team can help you find one-of-a-kind cashmere products for yourself or your loved ones, all whilst enjoying a peaceful hour’s shopping experience accompanied by a Yorkshire tea or coffee and a mince pie. Bliss. As for what is in store for the future of the brand, Alison hopes to capitalise on this new online market and grow their following further by educating consumers on the impact the fashion industry has on our planet. On top of this, the brand hopes to provide more local residents with work and support the community as much as possible. This inspiring approach to building a brand is something to really be admired, especially in times of such uncertainty and worry for many people. Nearly New Cashmere Company really are setting the standard for fashion retailers in such important times for change. Their honesty and responsibility come at no detriment to their beautiful, luxurious products that really do sell themselves. Importantly this Christmas, lets come together to support small local businesses, and buy our loved one’s gifts that are “Nearly New.” To find out more, visit www.nearlynewcashmere.co.uk Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk 37

What is MediSculpt Therapy? G&M HEALTHCARE CAN HELP YOU ACHIEVE YOUR WEIGHT LOSS GOALS. ediSculpt Therapy is a non-surgical, very low calorie weight loss program which can combat obesity and some chronic medical conditions like type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, high cholesterol, hypertension and sleep apnoea. Medisculpt Therapy comprises of three main components; the diet, which is based on high protein foods with low carbohydrate and low fat contents, and two body contouring treatments – LPG Endermologie and Vanquish MeTM or Exilis Elite machines. The body contouring treatment LPG Endermologie is used for skin tightening in order to prevent the development of loose and sagging skin during and after the rapid weight loss. The second body contouring machine is a radio frequency machine for body fat reduction. G&M Healthcare has both of these machines and the choice of which one to use depends on the treatment package and area of the body requiring treatment. The radio frequency machines result in a significant fat reduction in targeted areas like the tummy, thighs or arms. These treatments are carried out weekly by fully-trained therapists and last about 30-40 minutes each. In total you need about 75-90 minutes per week for your treatments. Weight loss with MediSculpt Therapy is safe, efficient and rapid. The weight loss progress is constantly monitored by a qualified GP and fully trained therapists who check weight loss progress, blood pressure, body fat content, metabolic rates and do blood tests on a regular basis. With regard to the results, they know from experience that a female patient will typically lose one stone a month and a male patient will typically lose one to one and a half stones a month. MediSculpt Therapy consists of six phases, which deliver amazing, safe, efficient and sustainable weight loss. During phase 1 of MediSculpt Therapy the diet comprises of five meals and one snack a day. Protein foods are filling, hence patients don’t feel hungry. To supplement the diet some fruit and vegetables are also allowed on the diet. G&M Healthcare also do metabolic tests to check your metabolic rates and also provide supplements to ensure you don’t lack in essential minerals like magnesium, potassium, sodium chloride, calcium and trace minerals. Once the phase 1 target is achieved after losing about 70 per cent of your target weight, patients are moved onto phase 2 where ‘normal foods’, like weighed amounts of chicken, meat, fish and diary like eggs, are introduced. Once 90 per cent of your target weight loss is achieved patients are weaned to measured amounts of normal eating on phase 3. Thereafter phases 4-6 are stabilisation phases to ensure that optimum weaning off from the diet is achieved without putting on back the weight you have lost. After the stabilisation phase there is a life-long maintenance programme where G&M Healthcare six weekly follow ups for review by a therapist who measures your weight and body fat composition. Follow up is then 3-6 monthly for one year or as required thereafter.
M
Kerry Norris Lost 7st on Medisculpt Therapy The cost of the program depends on the package you choose. There are three price packages – basic, standard and deluxe. All consist of your consultation fee (£100) and blood test fee (£100) followed by the package fees. Supplement prices are £50/month but vary depending on the package you choose. The basic package is £125/week for only food. The standard package is £250/week for food and body contouring treatments with LPG Endermologie and Vanquish or Exilis Elite. The deluxe package is £300/week and includes food, body contouring treatments, supplements, 4 weekly reviews and blood tests. Recent studies from the Diabetes Remission Clinical Trial (DiRECT), published by G Thom et al in Glasgow in collaboration with the NHS in September this year and by Yiqoao Xin et al in May 2020, have shown that very low calorie diets can cause remission in people with early type 2 Diabetes Mellitus of less than six years since onset. The programme is now being rolled out on a bigger trial of 5,000 people in the UK. G&M Healthcare is offering a free informal consultation with their GP, so if you would like to learn more and have your weight and body fat composition checked, please call 0114 233 5000, text them on 07944 629727 or email g.m.healthcarereception@gmail.com. Under the hood lies the infamous 542hp 5.0-litre supercharged V8 developing 700NM of torque. Reaching 62mph from a standstill takes 3.8 seconds and the SVR will reach a top speed of 178mph. Jaguar’s 5.0-litre V8 isn’t known for its fuel economy, and this is apparent here; a combined figure of 23.1mpg is claimed, though don’t expect to achieve this, and it produces 275g/km of CO2. Revisions over the previous SVR model include upgraded braking, new interior, redesigned exterior and upgraded tech. Available to order now with prices start from £77,595.
Cheap champion
World’s fastest? With a 1,817hp twin-turbocharged V8 engine, not only is the Hennessey F5 Venom the most powerful road-going production car in the world, it’s claimed to the fastest production car ever created. For those who are not familiar with Hennessey, they are one of the largest independent automotive tuning companies. Their first car was the 2011 Venom GT, which was based on a heavily modified variant of the Lotus Exige. The F5 Venom is the first car to be designed in house and from the ground-up. Weighing in at 1360kg, and the 1,817hp engine powering the rearwheels, the F5 Venom will achieve 062mph in 2.6 seconds, 0-124mph in 4.7 seconds, and 0-186mph in 8.4 seconds! Hennessey targets a top speed in excess of 311mph. 42 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk
The Dacia Sandero has been the nation’s undisputed champion of cheap motoring since it’s introduction to the UK back in 2008. This new fourth-generation variant is no different. Starting from £7,995, the Sandero is remarkable value for money for those who want a car simply to travel from A to B. For that price, you get automatic LED headlights with Y-shaped LED daytime running lights, 15-inch steel wheels, front electric windows, speed limiter, phone docking station, Automatic Emergency Braking and six airbags. For the more jacked-up, rugged, utilitarian Sandero Stepway, prices start from £10,995 and include 16-inch Flexwheels, tinted windows, LED headlights, front fog lights and black roof bars on the outside as standard.

Hotter hatch For the hot-hatch lovers out there, Hyundai has developed a new hatch from the skunkworks of its N-division. Say hello to the i20 N. The i30 N was a nutter of a car, if it was human is would almost certainly have an ASBO. Think of the i20 N as the annoying little brother following in its big brother’s footsteps. Not much word on the powertrain or performance details, however we do know that the styling has been inspired by the i20 WRC rally car, meaning it’s going to look like a hothatch should, and sounds just as you would expect. Like the i30 N, expect a manual to be offered for the real driving enthusiasts to which this car is catered towards.
Right price The SUV offerings from Peugeot have always been a solid alternative to the usually crop you get from the Germans. With their great styling and plethora of technology on offer they provide a car that’s hard to ignore in this sector of the market. Peugeot has now announced the pricing and specification of their new 3008 and 5008 ranges. With a choice of efficient petrol and diesel powertrains including a choice of two plugin hybrids on the 3008 model producing figures of 235mpg WLTP, prices will range from £27,160-£47,210 for the 3008 and £29,585-£40,905 for the 5008. A six-speed manual and eight-speed automatic gearbox are offered in both cars, however the two advanced plug-in hybrid powertrains are only available in the 3008.
Electric first For years the Skoda Octavia VRS has been the staple for allround everyday performance motoring, ranging from the hardworking blue-collar family man’s workhorse to the traffic cop’s undercover stealth machine. Never has there been an electric version, up until now – under the hood lies a 148hp 1.4 TSI petrol engine, which combined with an 85kW electric motor boosts power to 242hp and 400Nm of torque. From 50-70mph this is 2.2 seconds quicker than the ordinary petrol variant. A combined economy figure of 176.6mpg is quoted as is a CO2 figure of 26g/km. This can drive up to 39 miles on electric-only propulsion. Hatch and estate variants are offered, front-wheel drive only and powered through a six-speed DSG gearbox. Prices start from £35,020.
Hot Spur If you’re in the market for a car that can transport you, your partner and two kids in exquisite luxury, comfort, and speed then the Bentley Flying Spur will arguably be at the top of your shopping list. The Flying Spur is Bentley’s finest take on producing one of the best saloon cars ever made. Now though, like the Continental GT, the Flying Spur can now be powered by a 542hp 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine as an option to the 6.0-litre W12 which is synonymous with Bentley cars. The V8 is targeted to a more driver-focussed demographic as the V8 is 100kg lighter than the W12 iterant making for a more agile and responsive and enthralling drive. Deliveries due at the end of 2020. Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk 43

On the move The Northern Antiques Fair is moving to a new venue and is now scheduled to be held from Thursday 30 September to Sunday 3 October 2021 at Tennants, Harmby Road, Leyburn, North Yorkshire, DL8 5SG (Covid-19 circumstances permitting). Commenting on the move, fair director Ingrid Nilsson said: “For reasons of clarity, we felt it was sensible to relocate as the NHS Nightingale hospital has a contract with Harrogate Convention Centre until the end of March which is too far into 2021 to plan securely for an event there in the autumn.” Tennants is the ideal location for an antiques fair. Having undergone a major redevelopment in 2015, it is now the largest purpose-built salesroom in the UK, able to accommodate large scale exhibitions and events as well as hosting its own busy programme of more than 85 auctions every year.

HIDDEN GEMS AND

Leeds Dock (c) Carl Milner
Leeds’ reputation as a modern, lively place, popular with shoppers, students and nightlife lovers is no secret. But there’s a whole other side to this city waiting to be discovered. Colourful street art is tucked away in hidden courtyards and corners, tastes of the world are mixed together to create a gastro melting pot and did you know there’s a wonderful waterfront too?

Have you seen the huge elephant mural in Leeds? Or found Robin Hood and his friends on the clock in Thornton’s Arcade? Or spotted that you can look up and find a statue of an animal, often an owl, almost anywhere in the city centre? Read on and we hope you’ll see Leeds in a new light on your next visit…

Here at Visit Leeds, we love to welcome visitors to the city, and one of our favourite things to do is to introduce them to the waterfront. So often, given how landlocked Leeds is, people are surprised that there is a waterfront at all but, as Leeds sits on the banks of the River Aire and the Leeds Liverpool Canal, there’s plenty to explore. Hopping on the little yellow water taxi from Granary Wharf down to Leeds Dock not only provides a fun way to travel but gives you a peek into the city’s rich industrial history as you sail past the restored warehouses that line the waterfront.

Now, many of these buildings are home to popular restaurants and stylish bars where you can relax and watch the world go by. The food and drink scene in Leeds is thriving with a restaurant to suit all tastes and occasions, offering cuisine that pulls inspirations from across the continents. So when restrictions are lifted, take your own world cuisine tour and have breakfast in France, coffee in Italy, lunch in India, dinner in Japan, dessert in America and, if you can fit in some Spanish tapas, there are four restaurants to choose from; each unique but all excellent. It’s the independent venues and local breweries that make the experience in Leeds so unforgettable. Go behind the scenes of the brewing process at Northern Monk before sampling the ales in their refectory. Seek out hidden gem Whitelocks, the city’s oldest pub tucked away down an alley just off Briggate, for a pint from Leeds Brewery. A great way to find more of the city’s hidden gems
is to follow one of trails you can find on the Visit Leeds website. We recommend the Architecture Trail and our top tip is to look up; you’ll see the ornate ceilings of the Victorian Arcades, the iconic domed roof of Leeds Corn Exchange, and the golden owls atop Leeds Civic Hall. Another favourite is the Street Art trail, from the striking murals that have been in the city for decades, to the rainbow bright new pieces that adorn many walls, you’ll certainly want a camera handy. There’s a waterfront version of the street art trail too! We’re proud to have so much talent and creativity in the area, which is so evident in the incredible performing arts organisations that call Leeds their home. They may be local to us but, did you know, Opera North, Northern Ballet and Phoenix Dance are making an impact on the global stage? Together, they have performed across Europe, in the USA, Asia, South America and the Caribbean! Head over to the Visit Leeds YouTube channel to enjoy our new video series, Long Story Shorts, which delves into the history of Leeds and uncovers even more quirky facts and stories. We’re looking forward to welcoming you again soon. In the meantime, browse visitleeds.co.uk for inspiration ready for when you can next visit, and check out our Leeds at Home page for ways to enjoy the city online. Check out our A-Z Guide of visiting Leeds as restrictions start to lift – so you know what to expect.
