No filler, all Weller

Never one to rest on his laurels or repeat himself, Paul Weller is back with a new album and tour. He speaks to Jules Boyle about Fat Pop (Volume 1).

here are not many artists who are still making vibrant and relevant music over four decades into their career, but Paul Weller has always done things differently. Since he first burst into the national consciousness with The Jam in 1977, up through The Style Council and beyond with his prolific solo endeavours, the 62 year-old Englishman has always been about one thing – moving forward. Never one to rest on his laurels or repeat himself, Weller somehow has managed to keep producing new material that holds its own with his everincreasing back catalogue of

T

10 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

classic albums while always exploring new ideas at the same time. It’s no surprise then, that he’s back with another new record that does just that, the incredible Fat Pop (Volume 1). His 16th solo album since his self-titled debut dropped way back in 1992, it comes less than a year after its predecessor, the equally astonishing On Sunset, which earned him his fifth Number One album as a solo artist. It’s a typically diverse collection of songs, taking in influences and inspirations from across the board, but with every track sounding unmistakably like nobody else other than Paul

Weller. As usual too, his quality control is as strong as ever too. There’s no waste on the album, no offcuts making up the runtime. No filler, all Weller in other words. Even by his standards, it’s been a quick turnaround since the last album but it’s a record he had already started planning that was just moved forward when lockdown kicked in last year. As far as he saw it, if you can’t get out and play music, what else is there to do than make some more? Looking back at the genesis of what became Fat Pop (Volume 1), Paul said: “Most things become more apparent when you’re

working on a record, so I don’t think I had any masterplan for it, I just wanted to make a record as I was facing a whole year or more of not doing anything, as all the live stuff had been cancelled obviously. The prospect of all that time off meant I was going to have to utilise my time in other ways, so I just put my time and energy into making a record. There was nothing particularly challenging in there though, just what are in my opinion, 12 really great songs.” The initial parts of the album were recorded remotely by Weller and his band - Steve Cradock, Ben Gordelier and Andy Crofts -

011 NSide June21 24/05/2021 12:59 Page 1

SEEING & DOING with the musicians trading files from each of their respective homes and only came together at Paul’s Black Barn studio in Surrey when restrictions were lifted. It wasn’t an ideal way to do things, but they made it work. Paul said: “In the first bit of the lockdown, I was just recording my vocal and a guitar or piano to a click track, then I’d send that to the various band members who’d do their part and send it back to me, so there was a bit of to-ing and froing for a while, until we could all get together, It was very weird, I wouldn’t say it was completely enjoyable as little things kept coming back that we could have easily fixed if we were all together, but it did enable us to keep moving forward and stay working. Getting back together in person though, that was really special. I would say it was like the first day of school, but I hated school, so it was more like the last day, just a real f***ing joy. Just having us all back in the same room again, having a bit of banter and playing some music together. We’d really missed it; we’d missed each other, and we’d missed playing together.” A new Weller album isn’t ever something you can predict what it’s going to sound like, which is just how he likes it. He makes music that interests him and that he wants to be proud to let people hear. With a back catalogue and reputation like his, he could easily go down the heritage act route if he wanted to and just churn out the hits for the rest of his life, but that’s just not how he’s wired. Paul said: “I just wanted every song to be strong on its own, like each one could

be a single. I’m always just trying to keep my own interest and not repeat myself, which when you have been recording music as long as I have, can be difficult. In fact, it’s next to impossible to always come up with something different, but I’m always conscious of trying to reach somewhere else or get to some other place with it. So, for me, having two or three moments on each record that I’ve managed to do that, then it’s successful for me. “I couldn’t do that heritage route easily, not with any sort of conviction at all. I’m just not cut out for that sort of thing. I’ve always been more interested in what I’m doing at the time and what I’m doing next and that goes right back to The Jam days, you know? My attitude has always been ‘Well that was a good record, let’s crack on with the next one and try and make something a bit different.’ That’s always been in me, but I think the older I get, the less cautious I am about trying different things or seeing what works. There was a similar ethos in The Style Council, I just don’t think I had the chops to bring it off successfully at times, either vocally or as a musician. It’s just the passage of time, really. “I’ve always felt comfortable about making new stuff though, if that’s what I’m into at the time, then that’s what I want people to hear. That’s what

I want to play to you, so that’s what I do. Saying that, there’s also loads of old songs that I play live, whether it’s the ones that people want to hear, I don’t know. People want all different things, but I do try to cover most points in my history, but the new record will always be the most important thing to me. Unless it’s a piece of sh*t, then I wouldn’t care, but if that was the case I wouldn’t be out there doing it anyway. If I believe in something though, I want people to hear it.” Fat Pop (Volume 1) features some stellar guest collaborations, such as Amen Corner legend Andy Fairweather Low on the strutting groove that is Testify and Paul’s own daughter Leah, who cowrote and performed on Shades Of Blue, the classic slice of three-minute kitchen sink pop that was the first single released off the album. Away from his recorded output, Weller has been a constant presence on the live circuit all these years, but his usually relentless touring schedule ground to a halt last year along with the entire live music industry. Naturally his first concern was people’s lives and health, but not being able to do the thing that he has spent his entire adult life doing (and loving) took a bit of getting used to. He said: “It’s really, really weird. It’s the longest I’ve gone without playing live since I started making music. We’re hopefully doing this tour in November, which has been rescheduled several times already, which will make it nearly two-and-ahalf years since we’ve played live. That’s an awful long time to be off.” For the latest news on tour dates see www.paulweller.com

Venture further with an e-Bike WHEELBASE ARE E-BIKE EXPERTS AND OFFER ADVICE AND GUIDANCE ON CHOOSING THE RIGHT BIKE. here’s never been a better time to start cycling. The activity has gained a new-found popularity over the last couple of years with more and more people discovering the joys of exploring further afield without using a car. But maybe you’re intimated about riding up hills? Taking on longer distances? Maybe you’re a little rusty and are worried about your fitness? Fear not the electric bike is the answer. It’s nothing short of amazing how much the e-Bike has developed over the past decade; during this time e-Bikes have become considerably lighter, more powerful, efficient and affordable. We’re at a point now where nearly all major global bike brands produce their own range of eBikes, with each machine being specifically tailored to a particular cycling discipline be it mountain biking, leisure and commuting or road cycling. There is now a fantastic wealth of options to choose from, helping you to pick an e-Bike that perfectly suits your own circumstances and riding preferences. WHEELBASE stock one of the largest and broadest ranges of eBikes in the UK from major bike brands including Cube, Trek, Cannondale, Specialized, Focus and Reise & Muller. An e-Bike provides pedalling assistance via a compact electric motor and battery neatly integrated into the frame of the bicycle; in the UK all motors assist to a speed of up to 15mph at which point they cut off power until the speed drops back bellow 15mph. The benefits of this extra assistance are mostly felt when negotiating steep hills or when you’re carrying a load on your bike; an e-Bike takes the strain out of commuting, reducing time spent waiting in traffic and

T

18 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

eliminating the feeling of arriving at work exhausted and out of breath.

Motor systems There are several options when it comes to which motor powers your e-Bike; the market leaders are Shimano and Bosch who have invested a considerable amount into the development of their eBike drive systems. These modern motor and battery systems are now incredibly sophisticated making them really userfriendly and efficient, with numerous digital ride-modes allowing you to tailor exactly how you use the pedal assistance available during each ride.

Why go electric? Electric bikes offer all of the freedom

and benefits of cycling, but with a little extra assistance. Similar to an electric car, to fully charge an e-Bike battery can take around five hours; depending on the terrain you’re riding and how you use the pedal assist a fully-charged battery can power your e-Bike for upward of 150km. The cost of electricity for that five hour charge could be as low as 20p making the use of an e-Bike for your daily commute exceptional value when compared to filling up your car, not to mention the environmental benefits that you’re passing on.

e-Bike experts WHEELBASE are the e-Bike experts and can offer you in-depth advice and guidance when you’re choosing your new bike. As e-Bikes continue to become more affordable, options to buy through the cycle-to-work schemes or with 0% finance make it even easier to choose an e-Bike. Theatre Northern Ballet’s Swan Lake 17-26 June / Leeds Grand Theatre https://leedsheritagetheatres.com Adored by audiences for over a hundred years, Swan Lake is the most famous ballet in the world. In Northern Ballet‘s emotive retelling, Anthony’s life is haunted by guilt after the tragic loss of his brother. When he finds himself torn between two loves, he looks to the water for answers. It is there that he finds solace with the mysterious swan-like Odette. Tchaikovsky’s electrifying score is played live by Northern Ballet Sinfonia as this iconic story is beautifully reimagined by David Nixon OBE.

SIX 29 June-3 July / Leeds Grand Theatre https://leedsheritagetheatres.com Nominated for five Olivier Awards including Best New Musical, the sell-out international smash hit SIX is the phenomenon everyone is losing their head over! From Tudor queens to pop princesses, the six wives of Henry VIII finally take to the mic to tell their tales, remixing 20 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

500 years of historical heartbreak into an 80-minute celebration of 21st century girl power. These Queens may have green sleeves but their lipstick is rebellious red. It’s time they told their story.

Mamma Mia! 13-30 August / Harewood House www.mamma-mia.com/harewood-house The sensational feel-good musical Mamma Mia! is coming to Harewood House in the heart of Yorkshire this summer for audiences to enjoy the original stage show in the open air for the first time. Fall in love with the irresistibly funny tale of a mother, a daughter and three possible dads on a Greek island idyll, all unfolding to the magic of ABBA’s timeless songs. Judy Craymer, creator and producer of Mamma Mia!, said: ‘‘It’s going to be wonderful to experience the original musical literally under the stars in the beautiful grounds of Harewood House. Mamma Mia! lends itself perfectly to the outdoors and what better way to leave lockdown than to be transported to our sunny Greek idyll. As we look forward to Mamma Mia!’s return to the West End, we can’t wait for you to join us in the open air for the first time ever!”

Comedy Sofie Hagen: The Bumswing 26 June / City Varieties Music Hall https://leedsheritagetheatres.com One of British comedy’s most exciting talents (although she’s Danish), winner of the prestigious Edinburgh Best Newcomer Award, a cult podcaster, and now the author of the hugely successful book Happy Fat, Sofie Hagen returns to Leeds with a brand new show direct from the Edinburgh Fringe. A show about the things you forget, the things you remember, and the things you wish you could forget. But also, there’s a bit about bums.

Music The Isley Brothers 25 June / First Direct Arena www.firstdirectarena.com The Motown legends arrive in Leeds to sing a back catalogue that includes Summer Breeze, That Lady, It’s Your Thing and Harvest for the World.

What exactly is ‘good’ art? ccording to the Merriam Webster dictionary, art is “something that is created with imagination and skill and that is beautiful or that expresses important ideas or feelings”. I feel that this is a good place to start because this definition is problematic for several reasons. For example, there are many great artists who create art without any real technical skills, and art is not always aesthetically pleasing. Moreover, what an important idea or feeling is to one person, can be meaningless to another. This definition of art is therefore not all encompassing because art can mean something different to all of us. That’s the point. Art can never really be defined accurately and wholly. However, in my opinion as an art curator and art gallery owner, there is most definitely such a thing as a spectrum of ‘good art’ and ‘bad art’. Here is what ‘good’ or ‘high’ art means to us at Galleria Meera. In our opinion, ‘good art’ is something that evokes some sort of a reaction in the viewer, whether it be engaging an emotional response or stimulating the mind. Even if you don’t instinctively like it at first glance, ‘good art’ should ask questions, for example, ‘why’, ‘what’, or even ‘how’. Contrarily, ‘bad art’ is something that can only be experienced at a surface level without any visceral reaction evoked or any underlying conceptual sophistication. In ‘bad art’, no attempt is made by the artist to convey anything that requires any engagement on the viewer’s part. In other words, ‘bad art’ says little and asks even less. Art is for entertainment, and therefore ‘good art’ should at the very least change or elevate the viewer’s current state of emotion, just like good music or cinema. Have you recently watched a movie that did nothing for you? It didn’t even leave you confused, angry, annoyed, or disappointed? It just left you feeling… indifferent? Paintings and sculptures are no different from cinema in that sense: there is good and bad based on whether they can foster a reaction in you. Although at Galleria Meera we have our own definition and criteria of what good and bad art is, we acknowledge that this is all subjective and bound to attract some healthy disagreement. Therefore, it’s important to take the time to understand what ‘good art’ and ‘bad art’ means to you personally in your art collection journey, so that you can discuss your views and opinions when conversing with other art lovers.

All about provenance: THE PUNCH BOWL AND THE OAK TREE INN RETURN WITH STUNNING MENUS RICH IN LOCALLY SOURCED PRODUCE. wo of Yorkshire’s most beloved gastro pubs have finally reopened their doors, and marked the occasion with their boldest new food menus to date, showcasing the very best locally sourced and sustainable produce. Marton-Cum-Grafton’s The Punch Bowl and Helperby’s The Oak Tree Inn, have been working hard during lockdown to ensure their highly anticipated comeback doesn’t disappoint their loyal customer base. The result is a selection of irresistibly well-put-together dishes that sets them apart from the average rustic countryside pub. Both venues have also had their interiors

refreshed in time for spring with a brand-new lick of paint. Both venues wanted to make a mark to their return by giving something back, and so a special dish was created to help out two of their favourite charities. The Oak Tree Inn has chosen Lucie’s Animal Rescue and The Punch Bowl will be donating to the charity Sense. For every sale of the divine salad of warm Spillman’s Asparagus, each pub will make a donation to their charity of choice. The family-focused and dog-friendly sister venues are both part of the awardwinning Provenance Inns and Hotels Group, which has a portfolio of awardwinning inns and hotels across the

North, each with a strong focus on supporting local food and drink producers. Tom Patrick, Head of Marketing of the Provenance Group said: ‘’Like our fellow businesses across the hospitality industry, we couldn’t be more thrilled to be opening our doors once again and welcoming back our customers. We know from feedback that they’ve been missing their favourite hand-pulled ales and restaurant dishes, and are confident they’ll be blown away with our new food menu.’’

WHAT’S GOING ON LEEDS?

Swinging back into normality

THE SHACKLES ARE OFFF... AND JORDAN ODU IS MAKING THE MOST OF HIS RETURN TO ‘NORMALITY’.

fter the big washout that has been spring 2021, it felt so good to finally leave my brolly and thermals at home and enjoy some topclass restaurant cooked food indoors. Absolute heaven. I’ve wasted no time in filling my diary with some long overdue trips out, the first being the all-new Lucia restaurant in Harrogate. Specialising in handcrafted Italian food and delicious original cocktails, this restaurant, lounge New look Lucia, Harrogate and vintage Champagne bar is ideal for those wanting a taste of the high-life with great music to match. My personal favourite was the melt-in-the-mouth Slow Cooked Beef Shin and Saffron Risotto, and the From Lucia with Love cocktail with tequila and grapefruit liqueur. I also found time to head over to Ripon for another visit to the incredible Grantley Hall, this time to experience The Orchard. New for spring, this outdoor casual drinking and dining area is stunning to look at, with orange trees and views of Grantley’s perfectly manicured gardens. I enjoyed the fresh and fruity Spiced Crispy Chicken with black fig, cucumber, honey and mango, washed down with a glass of the Kuki Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, a match made in

heaven. Another one of my go-to haunts, The Beehive in Thorner, has returned with an ambitious new menu from the talented Chef Alex Farolfi. Hot on the heels from his stint at Grantley Hall where his work with acclaimed chef Shaun Rankin helped gain the restaurant and hotel a Michelin Star, his modern take on classic British flavours is already causing a stir. I can’t wait to return, watch this space for my full review. Countryside pubs have become something of a regular for me of late, and one place that’s well worth the trip is The Punch Bowl in Maton-CumGrafton near York. Owned by the Provenance Inns group, this popular village pub is a real foodie magnet for a reason; their simple twists on gastro pub classics are a delight. Hearty home-cooked dishes don’t get much better than the Yorkshire Chicken and Doreen’s Black Pudding Terrine with toasted sourdough, and the Crispy Belly Pork with apple and pork ragout. Seek them out and you won’t be disappointed. Back in Leeds, it’s been so good to see the city centre burst back to life again. I enjoyed a mini bar crawl, kicking off in the city’s oldest pub for a much-needed pint of local ale.Yes, Whitelocks have reopened after their longest stint closed in over 300 years of business. They’ve returned with an extended beer garden and some top-notch pub grub, with all the old-world charm they’ve been rocking since 1715 intact. We then moved over to Roxy Ballroom on Merrion Street, now The Beehive with three floors of Thorner is back gaming utopia to dive into. I loved their new basement bar, complete with the incredible duckpin bowling. It was reassuring to see my school bowling skills haven’t left me, as I smashed every game before moving on to some old-school arcade games, where sadly my luck ran out.

Workwise, seeing the comeback of events and being lucky enough to organise them has been the biggest blessing in recent weeks with The Faversham looking like the place to book for summer BBQ’s and private parties, and the forthcoming Multistories summer pop-up is set to shake things up when they hit the city centre every weekend from 11 June. Taking place on level 8 of CitiPark’s car park on Merrion Way, Multistories features foodie pop-ups from the likes of Masterchef ’s Matt Healy and baking

queen The Savvy Baker, not to mention amazing city views, acts and DJs booked in. One last thing to add to your hotlist is Hush, a super-VIP members-only bar now open in Leeds. Promising to be the place to catch all of Leeds’ glitterati, local celebs and sporting stars. Hush will offer its guests ultra-exclusivity alongside premium bottle service, a private dancefloor and no cameras. Count me in. Until next time, enjoy your newfound freedom and I look forward to checking back in with you soon.

IN HER LATEST COLUMN, CLARE CAROLL TALKS ABOUT EYES AND THE IMPACT PLASMABLAST SKIN THERAPY CAN HAVE ON THE AREA. hat bothers most people about their eyes? Clients start having concerns about their eyes when others tell them they look tired or when they look in the mirror and they think they look sad, tired or older than they feel. Heavy-looking upper eyelids are the thing that usually bother them most. Women will tell me they’re having trouble putting on makeup – their mascara winds up on their upper eyelids instead of on their lashes, and they have to pull their skin to the side to apply eyeshadow. Men will say the hang of the excess skin feels heavy and makes them tired. Under the eye clients either have bags or crepey, thin skin. Well, worry no more. The whole eye area can now be treated with my Plasmablast treatment. On the picture shown I treated the whole area just once. The results speak for themselves. I will be treating these eyes again at the three months stage and this will last at least three years. The treatment can be done three times depending on how much loose skin the client has or how tight the client wants the skin to be. The cost of the whole eye area is £450 which, comparing it to blephroplasty (costing between £3-6k), is a significant difference. The eyes heal in seven days with Plasmablast. If you would like an appointment for my treatment please get in touch, it’s 100 per cent natural, there are no injections, simply trauma and healing. I work in York, Leeds, Bradford and Barnsley. Call me on 07976 971501 to find out more or book an appointment.

A tragic loss THE VERY SUDDEN AND TOTALLY UNEXPECTED DEATH OF HIS SON PROMPTED FATHER DAVID BRANSBY TO CREATE A BOOK OF POETRY. ollowing on from an awful experience that happened in November 2019, David Bransby expressed his feelings into verse, and penned three poems, My Beautiful Son, My Darling Boy & The Saddest 100 Days Of My Life. As David is not alone in putting emotions into verse, he is looking for around 100 of the most beautiful, yet heart-breaking poems that have been written by/for bereaved parents, siblings and/or grandparents. The loss of his son Elliot continues to be a major part of his life and through the emotion of poetry, David aims to raise money for a great cause. Once completed, the book will be sold throughout the UK by The Compassionate Friends. David has an aim to raise £30,000 for the charity organisation - with all proceeds and sales (after design,

Put a smile on your feet! VISIT FITRIGHT FOOTWEAR! aving trouble finding comfortable, well-fitting shoes? Fitright footwear in Harrogate may have the answer. As the days become longer and warmer it’s time to ensure that our feet have the comfortable, correctly fitting footwear they need, so that we can enjoy the summer as much as possible. Fitright footwear not only have a fabulous collection of shoes and sandals to make sure you keep moving and look and feel your best, but we also offer an outstanding, professional, unique, free of charge, measuring and fitting service on a one to one, appointments only basis. We believe it’s important to build relationships with our customers and have found an honest approach to fitting shoes is recognised and appreciated. Customers return to us time and again for our

H

amazing, specialist service and because they trust us. It’s vital to keep mobile and this begins with wearing correctly fitting footwear. If our shoes don’t fit properly or they are uncomfortable and make our feet hurt, we become less active, and this inevitably impacts on our health and wellbeing. We spend a fortune on looking after our bodies physically and nutritionally - joining gyms, going to keep fit classes, buying into diets or having pre-designed meals delivered to our doors but little or no time is spent focusing on or educating people about feet and foot health.

We cram our feet into shoes that are often the wrong shape, too short, not wide or deep enough and overall are totally unsuitable for the needs of our feet. Incorrect footwear can cause long term damage. Many customers say they have wide feet, yet we often discover, that it’s deeper not wider shoes that are required. Width and depth are often confused. Fitright footwear stocks a variety of beautiful, carefully selected shoes and sandals in a selection of widths, depths and sizes, for men and women. We endeavour to help customers find good quality shoes, that fit. With a great choice of brands such as Finn Comfort, Joya, Fidelio, Waldläufer, Legero and DB Wider Fit we have the ultimate collection of comfort and stylish footwear, specially selected for the properties these shoes have to offer. MR OLIVER KAYES, MBBS, MSC, MD(RES), FRCS(UROL) IS A CONSULTANT UROLOGIST AT LEEDS TEACHING HOSPITALS TRUST AND SPIRE LEEDS HOSPITAL IN ROUNDHAY. Question: I have read there are now less invasive treatments for benign prostate problems. Would I be suitable for either Urolift or Rezum therapy? Answer:

Men with enlarged prostates (the medical term is BPH), which may cause difficulties with passing urine often suffer with other typical symptoms which may be extremely bothersome. Traditionally surgical treatments would involve removing prostate tissue. After surgery, men usually experience a rapid improvement in urinary flow but recovery from surgery may be prolonged and side effects such as incontinence, scarring and sexual problems may occur in some men. Recently, minimally invasive treatments have shown benefit in improving symptoms alongside a quicker recovery, faster operating times and reduced issues with potential surgical complications. Currently, two new treatments have shown proven results in helping men suffering from BPH. Urolift involves the insertion of tiny implants (like miniature treasury tags) which help to hold the prostate tissue out of the way, helping to improve the flow through the water pipe. Alternatively, Rezum uses heated water vapour (steam), which gently causes cell damage within the prostate tissue. Over time, the body will then naturally re-absorb the treated tissue as part of the healing response. The risks of these treatments are much less than standard conventional treatments, however, it is best to talk to your urologist who performs these procedures as to your suitability and discuss all options available. Both treatments can be performed as a day case admission to hospital. You will need to be fully assessed with regards to the size of the prostate, how bothersome the symptoms are and exclude any other factors which might be causing your problem to urinate.
