WHAT’S GOING ON LEEDS? SPRING IN HIS STEP… JORDAN ODU EYES UP A POST-LOCKDOWN SUMMER.

Riding out of lockdown

ating, drinking, zooming and walking my way through another lockdown month has had me pining for normality like never before. I’ve enjoyed the reset, completing Netflix and a slower pace of life, but it’s time to get back to what I do best and after Boris’s announcement there really is light at the end of the tunnel. Yes, news of the phased lockdown easing lifted my spirits and had me furiously marking my calendar for potential nights out. With 12 months of proper celebrations to make up for, it’s

E

10 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

safe to say summer 2021 is going to be big, seeing whoever I want when I want. I’m so ready. In the meantime, there’s still some of my favourite restaurants that have been helping to chase away the lockdown blues with some incredible home eats. One such fave is Chapel Allerton’s Black Market, who haven’t put a foot wrong since arriving on the scene a few years back. Highlights from their brand new sharing menu include Miso Cured Cod Fillet, which is cooked over coal for a

delicious hint of smokiness. Their take on the Chicken Kiev is nothing short of genius too and is filled with mango chutney butter and served with curry hollandaise. It’s so good. Another place you don’t want to sleep on is Headingley’s Heaney & Mill. They’ve been smashing it for months now, and their outdoor Winter BBQ is exactly what Leeds needs right now. If you’ve not yet been, I recommend you wrap up, grab one of their juicy burgers or schnitzels and enjoy. You can walk off the calories on the Meanwood Valley

CLOCKWISE FROM ABOVE: Take out from Black Market; enjoying the outdoors; Pizza Loco; Sugar Rush Sweeties; The Duchess’s Choice Dining Boxes from the Devonshire Arms

Trail, which has become a regular haunt for me of late. One thing I have missed is being able to get out into the Yorkshire Dales, however, The Devonshire Arms have eased the pain somewhat by bringing their first-class gourmet dining to you. If you’re celebrating anything in the next couple of months, you need to seek out their Duchess’s Choice Dining Boxes. Boasting such delights as Baked Scallops with Bechamel and Sea Herbs, Spring Lamb with lamb fat fondant and Gin and Elderflower Trifle, do I need to say anymore? We pushed the boat out and ordered cocktails to complement the food, and the Orange Marmalade Martini is to die for. A perfect treat for Mothers Day. And, as for those all too regular weekend movie nights, two local businesses have kept them from becoming stale. First up is Oakwood’s Pizza Loco, who have just raised the game with their life-changing Freaks in the Sheets Double-Layered Pizzas. The Marinargherita is a real beast, layered with lashings of mozzarella, fior di latte and marinara sauce. It won’t get you in shape for spring, but it will put a smile on your face and is worth

every single calorie. Another guilty pleasure of mine recently has been pick n’ mix sweets, and Sugar Rush Sweeties are my go-to when it comes to feeding this addiction. With nearly 300 sweet treats in stock, ranging

from old-school classics such as flying saucers and fizzy cola bottles to hot imports from the likes of Jolly Ranchers, they can’t be beaten. An essential home delivery purchase for all you candy connoisseurs out there. Lastly from me, I’d like to share news of Little Bao Boy’s collab with Doner Summer, which is a dirty vegan food pop-up touring the north in March. The weekend feast lands in Leeds on 7 March, before moving onto York, Hull, and Manchester throughout the month. Follow them on Insta for menu updates and get their early to avoid disappointment. It’s going to be extra tasty. That’s all from me this month, take care, hang in there as normality is on its way. Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk 11

PROMOTION

Proud achievements NEW RECORD FOR OXBRIDGE OFFERS AT QUEEN ETHELBURGA’S. ueen Ethelburga’s Collegiate is proud to announce its highest ever number of offers for Oxford and Cambridge Universities. This year, nine students (six Cambridge, three Oxford) successfully navigated a rigorous and challenging application process to gain offers across a range of subjects. For Cambridge University, Samuel Altass has received an offer to study Economics; Olivia Galvinan offer to study History; Lisa Levytska has received an offer to study Modern and Medieval Languages (French and German); Sophia Liversidge an offer to study History and Politics; Amaan Punnu has received an offer to study Land Economy; and Jency Yan an offer to study Natural Sciences. For Oxford University, Akshima Ghosh has received an offer to study Medicine; Jenny Petch, an offer to study Law; and Morgan Richardson has received an offer to study Chemistry. All nine students should be incredibly proud of their achievements, especially this year with the additional logistical challenges posed by the pandemic. Students have needed to remain focused and driven to succeed, engaging with their online learning provision throughout the summer term to ensure they achieved the AS grades needed to support their applications. Since September, they have studied hard to gain the highest scores in admissions tests whilst remaining focused on their challenging schoolwork, and were then faced with the experience of online university interviews, given their inability to visit Oxford or Cambridge in person. The successful students come from both the boarding and day community, with some having joined Queen Ethelburga’s in the King’s Magna Middle School and others starting in Year 12, a number on Academic Scholarships. Each has earnt this fantastic achievement through hard work and dedication, alongside a passion for learning. Kevin Oldershaw, Head of Queen Ethelburga’s College, said “We are incredibly pleased for each of them, as we are for all of our students when they receive offers and go onto take up places at their chosen universities. This success is testament to their academic abilities

and the comprehensive programme of support on offer. The combination of our experienced subject teachers and Sixth Form tutor team, alongside the dedicated Careers Department, means that students are helped to identify their strengths and interests, inspired and encouraged to follow their ambitions, and then supported to achieve them. Students with high aspirations, aiming for the top universities, can also take advantage of QE-appointed admissions consultants, gaining access to additional online and in-person tuition from subjectspecific Cambridge and Oxford tutors. This also helps with admission test preparation and smallgroup meetings to really stretch and challenge the most able. In an increasingly challenging and Principal of Queen Ethelburga’s competitive Collegiate Jeff Smith process, our

provision has really benefitted these and other students, ensuring they complete the wider reading, work experience, internships or extra and super-curricular activities to make their applications really stand out from the crowd!” Speaking of the journey to receiving an Oxbridge offer, student Jenny Petch said, “The process of applying to Oxford was certainly not an easy one; my application required a lot of hard work and preparation (especially as I had to sit an admissions test – the LNAT – in addition to my basic application). However, school offered lots of support throughout the entire admissions process; I was able to access help from teachers and the careers department whenever I needed and this was especially helpful when it came to my personal statement and interview preparation. I am extremely grateful to all the QE staff for the help and support they have given me in the past two years with my application – I couldn’t have done it without them!” For more information about studying at QE, visit qe.org.

Coming to a car park near you... DAVID WALLIAMS IS HERE TO SAVE SPRING FOR CHILDREN (AND THEIR FAMILIES) ACROSS ENGLAND. HERE, HE SPEAKS TO JULES BOYLE AHEAD OF HIS DATE AT HAREWOOD HOUSE. 14 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

INTERVIEW

ive theatre as we know it might still sadly be some time away from returning, but David Walliams is ready to get the whole family out and entertained. The actor and best-selling children’s author saw the original theatrical production of his 2010 novel Billionaire Boy cut short last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so with no end in sight to the restrictions on indoor live performances, he’s taking the fun outdoors. Teaming up with the Birmingham Stage Company and Coalition Agency, Walliams is here to save the Easter break for children (and their families) across England by turning the hit stage show into a full-on car park party! Launching last summer, the Car Park Party staged Horrible Histories’ Barmy Britain and followed it in the festive season with Horrible Christmas, playing to over 40,000 people. Now this Spring, it’s the turn of David Walliams’ Billionaire Boy, his classic tale of the richest child in Britain and his quest to find the one thing money can’t buy: a friend. With its rich themes of the importance of family and friendship, it’s a story that couldn’t be more relevant in these times of lockdown and isolation. Each show will be brought to life onstage in a completely COVID-safe environment, with families watching from their own cars, while allowing them to experience the joy and connection that theatre provides. The author was delighted to see his book adapted for the stage in 2019, but in the current climate, the new car park version has special significance for him. He said: “It’s brilliant! It’s very imaginative. I think people are craving some entertainment and especially live entertainment because although the TV has still been on, you haven’t been able to be part of an audience, so this is a great and safe way to enjoy a show. If you have kids who are in all day and home schooling, you really want something you can take your them to do or see. Hopefully this will really entertain families.” While bringing some joy to those families who come to see his show is hugely important to him, David is also just as passionate about providing a platform for the arts to be able to continue in some form during these difficult times. >>>

INTERVIEW

He said: “Well, it is important. I have friends that are actors, directors, designers and so on who have been all out of work because nothing’s been happening. They are absolutely all raring to go to do something. I feel like the audience wants it too. It’s hard to put an exact value on the arts because they enhance your life, but you can’t put a figure on it because it’s not like that. When you read something or see something though, it moves you. It changes the way you think, how you feel about the world and about life. It’s a massive thing and hits people at home. They see something that moves and changes them, something that makes them empathise with people they don’t know, whatever it is. “That’s a really important part of life. It’s a form of storytelling. We always want to tell stories all the time and it’s just a different way of doing it, and I think it’s really important, it’s very life enriching, but obviously it’s hard because it’s not exactly quantifiable, but that’s part of the magic of it isn’t? It’s just this wonderful and life enhancing thing. We all respond differently with different tastes and abilities and that’s part of the magic too. Not everyone agrees on what they like or is interesting to them. “It’s a big part of our culture and also, it’s something we can really celebrate in 16 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

this country because we’ve had so many brilliant playwrights and we have the West End. If there’s any other place like it, it’s only Broadway. No other place in the world has that. We have always had a very very vibrant arts culture here and it’s something we really need to protect.” Billionaire Boy tells the story of Joe Spud, the richest kid in the country who becomes friends with Bob, a regular boy he meets when he attends a local comprehensive school. It’s a theme of connection and friendship that David feels is even more important now that children’s lives have changed so radically. He said: “I think it’s very important that they can keep in touch with their friends at the moment. Luckily, technology exists, though not everyone has access to it, but at least with phones and computers you can see people and speak to them. It’s not the same as being with someone though, so it can’t take the place of it, but it is important. “Just checking in with people making sure they are okay is crucial at the moment, because a lot of people are struggling. It’s a hard one because you might not be feeling great yourself because you’re struggling with loneliness or isolation, so you see why people might find it so difficult. With kids especially, it can be hard to get them to engage with what they want and to

articulate it too. So it’s very important that everyone looks out for each other. I think also that kids notice their parents. They take on a slightly different attitude or something and the way kids relate to each other is wonderful, as they are just much more open.” In the book, Jack Spud’s dad made his billions from selling toilet paper, so David is in no doubt how he would have reacted to the scenes of people stockpiling huge amounts of the stuff last year. He said: “He would’ve been one of the few people that benefitted. It would’ve been him and Jeff Bezos! He would’ve been like: ‘Well, it could’ve been worse’. That whole thing was extraordinary wasn’t it? I almost forgot about it, but that was like a big gag in those days, wasn’t it? Jack would’ve definitely liked it. I always liked that story myself. His BumFresh toilet paper was actually a good invention, dry on one side and wet on the other.”

INTERVIEW

When Billionaire Boy was adapted for TV by the BBC in 2016, David took the role of Mrs Trafe the dinner lady, but although there’s no plans for him to reprise the role at the Car Park Party shows, don’t be surprised to see him pop up onstage at some point. He said: “I haven’t been asked to perform, but I definitely want to come and see it and if I do, I’ll definitely come onto the stage and say hello to everybody.” Far from resting on his laurels, David has been working relentlessly through the last year, squeezing in filming while writing more hit books, with the promise even more to come. He said: “Fortunately writing is something you can do on your own at home, so I have been able to work. Last year I brought out four different books, two or three of which were written during lockdown and I’m writing my new one at the moment. I’ve been able to be pretty busy in that department. I also got to do some filming at the end of last year, but it’s quite complex. The rules are changing all the time and it’s quite hard to do all the things I want to, but

David (right) with Joe Spud (actor Matthew Gordon)

I’ve been able to do some of them. I feel quite lucky in that respect as I have friends who are stand-up comedians or actors on the stage who haven’t been able to work at all. So, I feel lucky that I’m a writer as well, that the books are successful and people want to read them, so there’s always hunger for new ones.

So in that department I feel very lucky indeed.” Billionaire Boy is at Harewood House, Leeds on 2 May (performance times 2pm and 5pm). Tickets are priced from £49.50 (+ £2.50 booking fee) and are available at carparkparty.com.

A question of taste THERE ARE SOME OCCASIONS WHEN YOU CAN’T GET AWAY WITH PROSECCO WEDDINGS AND VALENTINE’S DAYS ARE NOT COMPLETE WITHOUT THE BUBBLY INDULGENCE OF CHAMPAGNE. BUT WHERE TO FIND THE FINEST? WE PUT A MAGNIFICENT SEVEN TO THE TEST. t’s the essential ingredient for moments of triumph in life, whether you’ve just won the grand prix, passed your exams, or seen your favourite bar liberated from lockdown. We’re talking about Champagne of course, once the preserve of the favoured few, now a mass-market product. But even though just about every supermarket stocks it and most even have their own label, it still evokes luxury wherever you find it, The arguments about the merits of the various brands have been going on ever since the monk Dom Perignon begat his new creation to the world. The very top houses today can command eye-watering prices. Take Krug, for instance, by general consensus king of the hill. When my daughters were born, I decided to try a variant to the old tradition of putting down cases of port for a new son, the

I

20 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

idea being that it is perfectly aged when he’s old enough to drink it. Instead, I put down a case of 1988 vintage Krug for each daughter with the promise that they could either drink it or sell it when they reached the age of 18. It cost me £600 for each case. As soon as the first one passed the big birthday, I looked into what it was worth. The first broker I spoke to offered me £2,500 per case. And her decision? Why, to drink it of course, with her new university chums. At a value of just over £70 per glass.

Our thanks to our panellists: Simon Carr Jane Harrigan Rebecca Thompson Kate Mallinson Geoff Norman Georgina Revitt

Student parties were never like that in my day. With such an array of choice open to buyers, there is a tendency to believe that you get what you pay for – so the more expensive it is, the better it is. As part of this journal’s continuing search for the truth come what may, we decided to put that theorem to the test. We chose seven candidate bottles, then had a call round a random set of readers to assemble a jury. “Would you like to drink Champagne all afternoon for free?” we asked. They would. Step forward six good men and women true. The brief was simple. The panel would be given a taste of seven different bottles, their identities hidden from view. They could award up to 10 points to each one, and comment if the urge took them. So were there any surprises in store? See for yourself as we reveal the results of our 2021 test of the best.

021 NSide Mar21 26/02/2021 13:10 Page 1

And the winners are… 1st place

WINNER

Brigitte Delmotte NV (Sunday Times Wine Club £35 a bottle or £29.99 for orders of 12 bottles or more) Scoring a massive 56 out of a possible 60 points, this newcomer was our hands-down winner. Our panel was left struggling for superlatives to pour out in praise of it. “In a word, perfect balance” said Geoff, clearly so overcome that he didn’t notice it was two words. “Scrumeeee! I love it” was Jane’s verdict. “It must be one of the most expensive?” By no means, as it turned out. As we later revealed to our jurors, their verdict is shared by some authorities on Champagne, who have awarded it a string of gold medals.

2nd

Veuve Monsigny Champagne Brut (Aldi £12.99) The big surprise of the tasting, taking runner-up spot with 49 points. Rebecca deemed it “everything a Champagne should be – fresh, clean tasting… delicious”. There were gasps when we revealed the identity of the bottle, and even more when we announced the price.

5th

Nicholas Feuillatte (Tesco, £20) Found some fans on the panel, with Kate and Georgina both praising it as “refreshing” and “seriously drinkable” while others including Simon found it “a little too acidic for my liking”. A decision from a divided house brought in score of 42/60.

3rd

Veuve Cliquot yellow label (Harvey Nichols Leeds £46.50) It must be dangerous being a man in the Champagne business if our tasting was any indicator. Not one, but two widows feature among our top three. These formidable ladies must know their stuff. “Full- bodied Champagne with a lovely nose” said Simon. 47/60 points.

6th

Heidsieck Monopole Brut (Majestic £27.99) Generally underwhelmed our panellists, some of whom found it rather acidic with an unpleasant aftertaste. Kate even went so far as to say “it gives me heartburn”. For their part, the panel gave it 34 out of 60.

4th

Krug Grande Cuvee (Around £165 online) Krug is the self-proclaimed king of Champagne, but it received a muted welcome from our jury, who gave it 44 out of 60. “Nice enough but nothing special”, noted Kate, who later realised she could have a case of our second-placed Champagne for the price of one bottle.

7th

Delacourt Brut (M&S £25) Oh dear, oh dear. There was something amiss with this bottle. It was evident as soon as we opened it that the wine was oxidised, with a tell-tale shrivelled cork. Only two jurors even tasted it and deemed it “revolting” and “undrinkable”. 0/60. Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk 21

What is MediSculpt Therapy? G&M HEALTHCARE CAN HELP YOU ACHIEVE YOUR WEIGHT LOSS GOALS. ediSculpt Therapy is a non-surgical, very low calorie weight loss program which can combat obesity and some chronic medical conditions like type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, high cholesterol, hypertension and sleep apnoea. Medisculpt Therapy comprises of three main components; the diet, which is based on high protein foods with low carbohydrate and low fat contents, and two body contouring treatments – LPG Endermologie and Vanquish MeTM or Exilis Elite machines. The body contouring treatment LPG Endermologie is used for skin tightening in order to prevent the development of loose and sagging skin during and after the rapid weight loss. The second body contouring machine is a radio frequency machine for body fat reduction. G&M Healthcare has both of these machines and the choice of which one to use depends on the treatment package and area of the body requiring treatment. The radio frequency machines result in a significant fat reduction in targeted areas like the tummy, thighs or arms. These treatments are carried out weekly by fully-trained therapists and last about 30-40 minutes each. In total you need about 75-90 minutes per week for your treatments. Weight loss with MediSculpt Therapy is safe, efficient and rapid. The weight loss progress is constantly monitored by a qualified GP and fully trained therapists who check weight loss progress, blood pressure, body fat content, metabolic rates and do blood tests on a regular basis. With regard to the results, they know from experience that a female patient will typically lose one stone a month and a male patient will typically lose one to one and a half stones a month. MediSculpt Therapy consists of six phases, which deliver amazing, safe, efficient and sustainable weight loss. During phase 1 of MediSculpt Therapy the diet comprises of five meals and one snack a day. Protein foods are filling, hence patients don’t feel hungry. To supplement the diet some fruit and vegetables are also allowed on the diet. G&M Healthcare also do metabolic tests to check your metabolic rates and also provide supplements to ensure you don’t lack in essential minerals like magnesium, potassium, sodium chloride, calcium and trace minerals. Once the phase 1 target is achieved after losing about 70 per cent of your target weight, patients are moved onto phase 2 where ‘normal foods’, like weighed amounts of chicken, meat, fish and diary like eggs, are introduced. Once 90 per cent of your target weight loss is achieved patients are weaned to measured amounts of normal eating on phase 3. Thereafter phases 4-6 are stabilisation phases to ensure that optimum weaning off from the diet is achieved without putting on back the weight you have lost. After the stabilisation phase there is a life-long maintenance programme where G&M Healthcare six weekly follow ups for review by a therapist who measures your weight and body fat composition. Follow up is then 3-6 monthly for one year or as required thereafter.

M

Kerry Norris Lost 7st on Medisculpt Therapy The cost of the program depends on the package you choose. There are three price packages – basic, standard and deluxe. All consist of your consultation fee (£100) and blood test fee (£100) followed by the package fees. Supplement prices are £50/month but vary depending on the package you choose. The basic package is £125/week for only food. The standard package is £250/week for food and body contouring treatments with LPG Endermologie and Vanquish or Exilis Elite. The deluxe package is £300/week and includes food, body contouring treatments, supplements, 4 weekly reviews and blood tests. Recent studies from the Diabetes Remission Clinical Trial (DiRECT), published by G Thom et al in Glasgow in collaboration with the NHS in September this year and by Yiqoao Xin et al in May 2020, have shown that very low calorie diets can cause remission in people with early type 2 Diabetes Mellitus of less than six years since onset. The programme is now being rolled out on a bigger trial of 5,000 people in the UK. G&M Healthcare is offering a free informal consultation with their GP, so if you would like to learn more and have your weight and body fat composition checked, please call 0114 233 5000, text them on 07944 629727 or email g.m.healthcarereception@gmail.com. Take the initiative WHAT WILL WEDDINGS LOOK LIKE IN 2021 AND WHAT WILL BE THE BIG TRENDS? WE GET SOME EXPERT ADVICE. he joys of getting married were really put to the test last year as the Covid pandemic lead to ceremonies being cancelled, postponed or greatly reduced in size. This effect is set to continue into this year with wedding trends for 2021 greatly influenced by the events of the last year or so. Here we look at some of the predicted trends for the coming year, with a little help from Lucy Plummer at the Vine Hotels Group.

T

Micro weddings When weddings resume - we’re being positive here - just how many guests will you be able to invite? Smaller ceremonies became the norm in 2020 and these intimate occasions, often with less than 20 guests, are set to continue. In most cases, it will come down to government constraints, but for a lot, the reasoning will be that couples simply want to scale back to just the few family and friends they can’t live without – lockdown has been a period of reflection for many about what’s truly important. “Smaller ceremonies are always so intimate and special, so we can imagine a lot more couples in the future might opt for this even after the restrictions have been lifted,” said Lucy. “However, we know that once the rules allow, a lot of couples will want to have a big celebration with all of their family and friends so larger ceremonies will always be popular.”

Keep things local Lockdown has put a huge strain on the UK economy and, in 2021, we’re going to see more couples choose to keep it local and support their local businesses, be they suppliers, bridal boutiques or caterers. It’s a sentiment echoed by Lucy Plummer: “I think as people become more and more environmentally conscious, there will be a greater emphasis on keeping things local when it comes to suppliers. Particularly with flowers, over the past few years we have seen couples opt for a florist where the flowers are grown locally.” Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk 27

Pastel colours A palette of soothing shades are set to dominate this year’s celebrations. Think gorgeous lilac, pastel pink, yellow and peach tulips and sweet peas, with a pop of colour such as orange or coral, and stationery of complementing colours too. “In terms of décor trends, a prediction is that pastel colours will become popular for weddings in 2021,” said Lucy. “Another trend is that ‘acts of gratitude’ will be an important part of the wedding day, couples will want to thank guests for attending their wedding and express their appreciation of them. This could be done be a personalised note on the place setting, a drinks voucher to have a special toast with, or a personalised wedding favour.”

Weekday weddings Guests can expect to see an influx of invites to weekday weddings in 2021, due in part to the build-up of 2020 weddings which have spilled over into 2021, but also budget considerations for couples who’ve been more stretched than expected. Hiring venues and suppliers is cheaper on weekdays and there’s more likely to be availability. “Weekday weddings have always been popular, however we think this trend will grow and grow,” concurred Lucy. “There tends to be more special offers available on Monday-Thursday dates plus a lot of suppliers offer discounts too. With lots of wedding postponements happening from 2020, the diaries for 2021 and beyond are looking full so we feel more people will opt for a mid-week wedding rather than prolonging the engagement.”

Sustainability Efforts to make weddings sustainable are great ideas for all couples to adopt: arrange a tree planting party for your guests to reduce their carbon footprint; keep food miles down by opting for locally grown meat and vegetables or a vegan menu; serve local beers, wines and spirits; and choose a venue with a beautiful backdrop that doesn’t require lavish decoration that will end up in landfill.

A return to tradition Weddings will go back to their heart: making treasured memories with friends and family. Experts across the wedding industry are predicting tradition to be a defining feature of 2021 weddings, from timeless dresses to nostalgic fragrances and traditional speeches. 28 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

Hollywood glamour Following months of elasticated waistbands, couples and their guests will want to go all-out for 2021 weddings. As well as statement and sparkling accessories, expect photo-perfect hair and makeup as we make up for lost photo opportunities. Many people will have had to cancel holidays so will be turning to the salon for a sun-kissed look and a bronzed goddess glow to cap their glamorous look.

uring the first lockdown, a Leeds baker and nanny who launched an online brownie business as a ‘hobby’ has become so successful she is working round the clock to keep up with demand. Savannah Roqaa, known as The Savvy Baker, 24, set up her baking business from her small apartment kitchen in Roundhay as something fun to do during the first lockdown. Within a few months, she now has a successful online business, six full-time staff working around the clock to keep up the demand and celebrity clients such as Leeds and England player Kalvin Philips. Savannah, formerly a makeup artist, developed her love of baking while looking after young children in her most recent role as a nanny. Savannah said; “I’ve never been a baker, but I’m naturally creative and it was a fun and educational thing to do while looking after the children. When lockdown started in March 2020, I started making brownies and dropping off care packages to my friends to cheer them up! They shared images of the cakes them on social media, and before I knew it, I had people direct messaging me for brownies and cakes and overnight I set-up The Savvy Baker. “Initially I worked from home, but right from the off I was baking 30-40 boxes of brownies a week so quickly outgrew my kitchen. I have lots of friends in the nightlife idustry, so they kindly let me use their premises to bake from.” The Savvy Baker offers a range of cakes, cookies and brownies from £10 to £35 with the biggest seller by far being the OG – Mars Brookie. Due to the power of Instagram, within six months, the business had grown from strength to strength with over 25,000 followers. The Savvy Baker now posts out over 500 boxes a week, has moved to commercial premises and employs up to 6 staff, ranging from assistant bakers, packers and drivers. Most of the staff she employs are friends from the hospitality industry who have lost their jobs due to COVID, and Savannah was keen to help and give back where she could.

D

Her older sister, Tia Roqaa, another entrepreneur who also runs an online business, Rocca Box, was a massive inspiration to Savannah. Savannah said; “I watched my older sister set up her own online business and admired her dedication and drive; it was this drive and passion that inspired me to set-up my own business. What started as something to make my friends happy in lockdown has now turned into a fulltime business. My positive mindset and ambition have helped me through these difficult times, and I’m super grateful for the success I have achieved to date.” What is next for The Savvy Baker? Like many other businesses, Savannah has seen how an online business model can be far more cost-effective than retail and has no plans to open a shop any time soon. She hopes to continue

growing the online side of the business and with the help of social media grow the brand nationally if not globally. Recently, The Savvy Baker staged her first-ever pop-up store on Street Lane and within 90 minutes had sold out of 1,000 brownies. Savannah said: “I couldn’t believe my eyes, I could see people queuing right down the street and in less than two hours we had sold out!” As well as developing the online side of the business and increasing production to meet demand, her long term ambition is to stage ‘pop-up’ events all over the city and hopefully the UK. This young lady is indeed ‘savvy’ and is destined for great things. Check out The Savvy Baker on social media – @thesavvybaker

Have you ever thought about using an interior designer? Using the professional services of an interior designer was once seen as the preserve of the super rich, but these days anyone that loves their home can benefit. Eleanor Goddard from Furnish & Fettle gives her top 3 reasons why & shares her thoughts on how to find the right person to work with. Get a fabulous finished result If you are planning to make improvements to your home the chances are that you want it look great when you are finished. While some people have the vision and the skills to achieve this most do not, we can’t all be good at everything! Last minute paint colour choices before the decorator starts and random furniture & accessory purchases don’t make for a cohesive scheme, however lovely each individual item maybe! An interior design is trained and experienced at considering the whole scheme and pulling all the individual elements together. This is when the magic happens and every time you and your friends walk into the room it’s a “Wow” moment. Save time & stress Planning a scheme and sourcing all of the elements can be hugely time consuming, especially if you don’t know where to look. It can also feel as though there are unlimited choices, and it can be overwhelming knowing where to start and how to decide between the different options. Working with an interior designer means they do all the initial leg work for you and then you just get to the fun bit at the end making the final decisions. Save money This might seem counter intuitive but working with an interior designer really can save you money as expensive mistakes are avoided. With insider knowledge and access to thousands of different suppliers an interior designer will be able to share options with you that you wouldn’t have come across yourself. They are also experts at making your budget go further, knowing where it is important to spend your money and where it is possible to make economies. “The most important thing to consider when choosing an interior designer to work with is do you get on with them. You are going to be spending a considerable amount of time with them and need to feel comfortable dealing with them. You need to trust that they understand what you are wanting to achieve, and that they are capable of helping you to achieve it” says Eleanor. “It’s also important to understand how the process works and how much it is going to cost you. At Furnish & Fettle we try to keep things simple but also flexible to suit differing needs. Our most popular service is our home interior design consultation which costs £250 and includes a visit your home either in person or via video. Alternatively we can work on an hourly fee basis or agree a fee for larger scale projects, just get in touch and we will happily discuss the best options for you.”
