Exciting developments at King’s Magna Middle School.

Leeds-based singer/songwriter and guitarist Eve Buckley talk to Northside about the release of her debut EP, growing as an artist and what the future holds

t’s been quite the last few months for The Sherlocks. Not only have they supported the likes of Keane and Shed Seven on tour, but they smashed a massive homecoming show at Don Valley

Their debut, Live for the Moment, was released in 2017 and was quickly followed by, Under Your Sky in 2019.

During this time they supported the likes of Liam Gallagher, Kaiser Chiefs and The Vaccines on tour before Josh and Andy decided to pursue opportunities outside the music industry. Trent and

Time-travelling WARDROBE

n an age of fast fashion, there’s something special, and appealing, about clothes that stand the test of time. One person who truly appreciates classic clothes is Jojo Elgarice, who runs his own vintage mens clothes store - Jojo’s General Store, also known as Rag Parade

The small but mighty gem holds an incredible section of vintage menswear, supplying authentic military, workwear, sportswear and contemporary classics to the people of Yorkshire and beyond.

Jojo has always been passionate about menswear, saying: “I was always interested in clothes and fabrics, a bit of an obsessive over the way things used to be made.”

This interest quickly grew into a livelihood, beginning his journey by opening a little shop in the centre of

The current store, on the fringes of the city centre, will be celebrating its ninth anniversary in April this year, opening in 2016. Jojo felt he wanted a change of scenery moving to the high street.

“It was a bit of a risk because I’d obviously already built up a business in town and then moved to completely the other side,” he says, but once he saw the shop front, he felt inspired to make the move happen.

Stepping inside feels like walking into a time-travelling wardrobe, with hundreds of vintage pieces each holding a unique and interesting backstory.

“I wanted it to be an old-fashioned sort of used to feel back in the day,” Jojo explains.

Jojo enjoys menswear from an abundance of historical inspirations and says his personal style is characterised by a fusion between new and old.

“My style is just a mash-up really. I’m kind of greedy, I like bits from every era. I wear old stuff but I don’t wear head-to-toe old stuff. You get people who wear like dress like that, I wear like a mix of old and new. So, I do buy new stuff, it’s just got to be something interesting usually.”

The most popular items at the moment, however, seem to be the more modern pieces. Jojo adds: “At the minute, it’s probably the later stuff, from the 1980s/90s, like vintage Stone Island, that’s really popular. The older stuff, I like it, I’m passionate about it, but I would say it’s

According to Jojo: “There’s a big mix of kids aged from around 16, all the way up to old men. We get the odd girl, but not many because it’s all menswear. I have tried womenswear but I just don’t understand it, I think you’ve got to be passionate about it haven’t you? And I just found menswear was much more my thing.”

The owner enjoys the wide variety of vintage selection Yorkshire has to offer.

“There’s quite a lot of places, they all serve a purpose and all have their own unique selling point, mine’s probably a bit more niche, a bit more specialist, but there’s also lots of good classic shops that just sell things like Levi’s. There’s quite a lot of options compared to some cities, I think it’s great.

“There was a vintage shop on the street and people would ask me if I was really annoyed by it, but I’ve always thought the more the better. It’s like when you go on holiday you go to an area with all the restaurants, it doesn’t matter if there’s more than one of you. I think a bit of competition is healthy,” he explains.

Catering to local and international interest alike, Jojo’s General Store also has many overseas clients. “I do have a lot of overseas customers, lots in Japan, so I don’t keep absolutely everything in the store, some of the really wacky stuff that those customers like to resell is kept in a storage warehouse, because it’s probably not going to sell to the everyday person.”

Hopeful for more growth in the future, Jojo says: “Hopefully the area becomes busier and all the

more vibrant – the more the merrier.”

From knitting and crochet to gifts and books, The Wool Den is a haven for all things craft and yarn.

ust to be clear, The Wool Den is much more than a ‘wool shop’, as owner Lianne Hayes points out when I visit her boutique store at The Yorkshire Hive.

“We’re an independent yarn and craft shop and offer much more than just wool,” as well as different yarns, knitting and crocheting accessories, books, gifts and lots more.”

For the uninitiated, the term ‘wool’ refers

is a broader term describing a continuous wool, cotton, synthetic materials, or any combination, that is used for knitting, crocheting, and weaving.

A self-confessed yarn hoarder, Lianne opened The Wool Den three years ago after a previous career working for the Police.

It was whilst working at neighbouring Yorkshire Wildlife Park, and after seeing open her own shop that not only indulged her own hobby but provided a muchneeded destination for crafters in the area.

“Wool and yarn are very tactile things and need to be felt and touched to make sure you’re getting exactly what you want,” added Lianne. “You don’t get that online, you’re never quite sure what you’re getting. I’ve found people travelling from all over to us who like the selections we offer as well as the expert advice.”

Lianne is a big advocate of real wool and prides herself on the provenance of the varieties she stocks, which are largely from Fair Trade and British suppliers. These ranges, which include a variety of colours and styles, are complemented by synthetic yarns, mainly acrylic, as well as cotton.

Crochet is proving extremely popular

at the moment, particularly with younger people..

“There’s this misconception that only old people knit or crochet but you couldn’t be more wrong,” adds Lianne. “More and more young people have taken up the craft as it’s a great way to relax and brilliant for your mental health. It’s important to encourage the next generation and good to see more younger people are wanting to learn how to knit or crochet.”

Shrove Tuesday, which this year takes place on 4 March, means only one thing – pancakes. Whether you like sweet, savoury or something in between, getting the batter and occasion in the right way. We’ve made it easy for you: here’s a simple batter recipe. The choice of toppings is yours.

Ingredients

300ml milk

Method

pinch of salt into a bowl or large jug, then whisk to a smooth batter. This should be similar in consistency to single cream.

2. Set aside for 30 minutes to rest if you have time, or start cooking straight away.

3. Set a medium frying pan or crêpe pan over a medium heat and carefully wipe it with some oiled kitchen paper.

4. When hot, cook your pancakes for one minute on each side until golden, using around half a ladleful of batter per pancake.

Continental coffee culture has arrived in Morley - and in some style, writes Ross Heppenstall.

Morley is a small market town on the outskirts of big-city Leeds and not readily associated with cosmopolitan café culture. But in recent years this historic corner of South Leeds has been transformed and become home to a growing number of cafes, bars and restaurants.

Nesso Morley, on Queen Street, lies opposite Morley’s hugely impressive town hall and is an increasingly popular part of a thriving social scene.

Nesso is an Italian-inspired breakfast and brunch restaurant serving a wide range of dishes as well as award-winning Afternoon Tea, coffee, cocktails and prosecco. Plus Moretti beer on draught.

The cosy establishment opened in the heart of Morley in October 2023 with the aim of offering something new to the residents of the town.

The menu is designed by renowned Leeds restaurateur and MasterChef star Bobby Geetha, who was brought on board as a consultant chef.

From training at the three Michelinstarred Noma in Denmark to working in Dubai, where he was named United Arab Emirates’ Best Indian Chef in 2018, Gheeta’s CV is impressive to say the least.

In January, Gheeta opened Kerala Canteen, a new Indian restaurant on St Peter’s Square in Leeds, bringing affordable Keralan cuisine to the city.

On a bitter late Wednesday morning in mid-February, my dining partner and I head out of the cold and into the warmth and comfort of Nesso, which is already pretty full. There is a nice vibe to the place and it offers plenty of space too, giving it an advantage on some of its neighbouring establishments.

We have a table reserved for us and start by surveying the extensive drinks menu - we both opt for a latte at a reasonably priced £3. There is a great choice with a Spanish Cortado – Marcelo Bielsa’s drink of choice during his time as Leeds United manager – at £3, Hot Chocolate for £4.25 and a Baileys Mocha for £5.50.

Plenty of iced coffees are available too with the Biscoff Frappuccino particularly tempting at £4.50 along with a range of smoothies and milkshakes. Teas, prosecco and draught beer ensure a huge choice of drinks, with caffeine-free organic latte also available.

Our lattes were delicious and we scanned the menu to choose our food.

I went for the Nesso Eggs Purgatory, a delightful dish inspired from classic Italian eggs in tomato sauce.

Consisting of two poached eggs cooked in tomato, hollandaise sauce, cheese, anchovies, grana padano and toasted Pugliese bread, this was delectable and was priced at £8.75. That represents outstanding value for a dish that feels a bit special, such was its succulent taste and beautiful presentation.

My partner went for the Olive Foccacia Mortadella ham, which cost £7.50 and was basically tantamount to a small mountain of delicious food! The baked Olive Foccacia was topped with creamy ricotta cheese, huge slices of Mortadella ham and bathed in pesto drizzle.

The menu really is amazing with dishes such as Bacon pancakes, Ham Benedict, Nesso Loaded Nachos, Focaccia Pizza, Italian Meatballs in Tomato Sauce, Falafel and Hummus all very reasonably priced at well under £10 per dish.

It is hard not to feel that prices would be considerably higher if Nesso was based in Leeds city centre.

and a real buzz as midday approaches. After two more lattes, we eye a range of mouthwatering desserts which include Cheesecake of the Day at £5, Tiramisu at the same price, authentic Sicilian Cannoli, Chocolate or Lemon Tart, and ice cream

I opt for a tasty Lemon Tart at £4.75 while my partner orders the Cannoli at £5. Both are lovely and the wide range of dishes at Nesso should ensure their customer continues to grow and grow.

Their Afternoon Tea offering looks pretty special and will set you back £34.95, although that is for two people.

For that you get two giant scones, clotted cream and jam, two cup akes, two pistachio cannoli, two hazelnut cannoli and two crostone or bacon bap/breakfast bap.

Sukhothai continues to evolve - and is as popular as ever, writes Richard Abbey.

hen you open a successful restaurant it must be very easy to rest and your laurels and maintain that same formula that keeps customers coming through the door. If it ain’t broke,

All were on display on our recent visit to Sukhothai’s Leeds city centre venue, which is located conveniently on South Parade, a short walk from the train station and close to the main shopping areas as well as a multitude of pubs and bars.

Sukhothai South Parade is an impressive space with vaulted ceilings and a large dining room divided by a staircase which leads down to a further basement dining area. The décor is in-keeping with the other restaurants with lots of gold, dark wood and ornamental statues. Staff, many attired in traditional Thai dress (gold of course), ease bringing all manner of impressivelooking dishes to the waiting tables.

The restaurant has a small bar area in the entrance and it’s as good a place as any to start – we nibbled on prawn crackers and menu, which runs to over 20 pages.

As well as the a la carte and set menus, Sukhothai also offer an Early Evening Menu, which operates Monday to Friday from 5-6.30pm where diners can enjoy two courses (one starter, one main) for £20.

The Golden Kingdom (£12.50), as it was so grandly named, combined the richness and strength of Thai Sangsom Whisky and orange bitters. It arrived at the table

not only a touch of theatre when it was removed, but leaving fragrant aromas swirling around your nostrils. It tasted pretty good too, sweeter that a traditional Old Fashioned but with those familiar bitter notes and orange undertones.

Not one for theatre, my dining companion opted for a simple Thai Singha beer (£4.50).

After a bit of back and forth through the menu we decided to start with one of the sharing platters and chose what we were told was the most popular – the Sukhothai

platter (£11.75 per person). This came with an assortment of satay chicken, chicken

cakes and king prawns in batter with peanut sauce and a freshly made sweet chilli sauce. It was a real showcase of Thai food with married together perfectly.

We followed this with dishes of Gai Yang (£17.75), a popular Thai street food dish consisting of chargrilled chicken breast, marinated in black pepper and lime leaves, and served on a sizzling hot platter with a spicy tamarind sauce, and Pad Gratium Prik Thai (£16.95), which translated as stirfried king prawns with plenty of garlic and cracked black pepper, topped with crispy garlic.

The tamarind sauce was just delicious and paired beautifully with the moist chicken, which had a hint of spice, whilst

t had been open barely a week on the day I visited but the charm of Poto-Poto, a new AfricanEuropean fusion restaurant, seems to have already made an impression on the people of Doncaster. Just a few tables along from me was a lady already making a return visit, requesting the same dish she had enjoyed previously (it was seafood linguine in case you were wondering).

“Our opening weekend was fantastic, we couldn’t have asked for any more,” said owner and chef Natacha Elenga, who grew up in Belgium but has roots tracing back to the Democratic Republic of Congo. Marriage brought her to South Yorkshire and with it the ambition of opening her own restaurant.

“We’re not just serving food,” Natacha continued. “We’re serving a story – one of connection, culture, and the beauty of blending different worlds. At Poto-Poto, we believe in bringing people together over great food, and we’re excited to share that with our community.”

After honing her craft at the renowned CERIA University in Brussels, where she studied culinary arts, Natacha spent over 15 years perfecting her skills and experimenting with an array of global

George Mills represented Team GB at the Paris Olympics last summer. The Yorkshireman tells Ross Heppenstall about his desire to realise more dreams.

South Africa is a long way from North Yorkshire; a gruelling training camp in the Mpumalanga province is quite the contrast to a relaxing family Christmas in Harrogate.

Yet that was the situation which George Mills found himself in once again as he saw in the New Year over 8,000 miles from home.

The talented middle-distance runner, who competed for Team GB at the Paris Olympics in the 1,500 and 5,000 metres last summer, has grown accustomed to putting his

“To be able to come away from that with a medal is something to be proud of. Again, it gives me a lot of hunger to perform and prove it on the world stage in the future.

“There were various high points last year and running the standard for the 5K in Boston was very big and a real highlight because that was basically the emphasis of our winter training.

“Qualifying for both the 1,500 and the 5,000 for the Olympics is something that not many athletes have done and was something we really wanted to do. We can be proud of that and making an Olympic circumstances isn’t where we want to be but is trending in the right direction.”

In early February, Mills broke new ground in the 3000m at the Meeting de l’Eure in Val-de-Reuil, a World Athletics Indoor Tour Silver meeting. Mills took the ninth on the world all-time list, breaking

our programme, every year we just try to become a better athlete,” explains Mills. “Last year I was able to compete at a high level in the 1,500 and the 5,000. The focus is being able to improve so I can perform more consistently at a higher level.

“But I’ve also had a taste of a European

“Day to day, you have to keep turning up and get the work done even when you don’t want to. Then you will eventually see the fruits of your labour.”

That drive, desire and competitiveness characterised his father’s football career.

George adds: “I don’t really think about having a sporting legacy within the family

“But there’s a belief between all of us that, if we really throw the kitchen sink at something, then we can compete with the best in the world.”

“The next Olympics in 2028 is a massive target and I’ll be 29 then, which is a good age. I’ll have four more years of good training under my belt and everything is focused towards that.”
