20 We catch up with Rag ‘N’Bone Man

ello and welcome to the May issue of Northside. As restrictions start to ease we’ve been thinking about the places we can visit and time we can spend outdoors eating, drinking and entertaining. We look at the art of dining alfresco and if you’re connecting with family and friends over a picnic in the park or garden, we have some great accessories too. As your movement starts to become a bit freer, we also look at things to look forward to once lockdown ends. We’re talking theatre, live music, cinema, comedy and more. Elsewhere we’ve got your usual mix of fashion, beauty, motoring and more.

Vogue J-Pull gloss in white

IF YOU LIVE IN A CITY APARTMENT, IT’S ALL ABOUT MAKING THE MOST OF THE SPACE YOU HAVE. THIS IS PARTICULARLY TRUE OF YOUR KITCHEN – A SPACE THAT YOU PROBABLY USE MORE THAN ANY OTHER. o get the most from urban living, create a kitchen space that is flexible, comfortable and always adapts to your needs. Wren Kitchens has made this task a lot easier with a huge selection of striking contemporary styles to choose from and a planning process that makes it easier for you to make the most of your available space.

T

Perfect planning

Wren’s kitchen designers can help you in the all-important early stages, beginning with the layout which is critical to get right. Design concepts like the ‘kitchen triangle’ (thinking about the most used part of your kitchen and how you’ll move between them) are important in any kitchen, but particularly in an apartment where space is at a premium. Wren’s kitchen designers will help you to decide the layout that best fits your space, and then make sure that the kitchen works with the life you lead. Being smart with the units you choose is key, and you’ll find a versatile range at Wren. A midway unit, for example, fits between a wall and a base unit, turning dead space into additional storage space. Built-in wine racks look good and Wren has options the right size and shape for every home – from a cheeky little two-

space that contrasts perfectly with the exposed brickwork for that industrial feel. A warm metallic splashback brings out the warmth of the bricks, and the handleless units give it a clean, modern look.

Pick your style

So, you’ve got the space sorted but, for many city dwellers, choosing your kitchen is also about injecting a bit of urban style and glamour into your home – and there are plenty of options at Wren Kitchens. The sleek ultra-modern look is the perfect fit for many city apartments. Wren’s beautiful Infinity Plus Milano Ultra kitchen is a stunning example of what can be achieved with this approach. This kitchen is all about smooth lines, with no unnecessary handles to distract the eye. Add an extra dimension with accents of copper from the profiles, minimalist lights and a bold splashback. If sleek and ultra-modern isn’t your thing, then the on-trend industrial look might well be. Think exposed bricks and beams and lots of steel and warm metallics. Wren Kitchens’ J-Pull range fits this look perfectly. It’s handleless, so you’re creating a kitchen that is all about clean and seamless lines. The J-Pull Gloss is a perfect example of how you can create light, bright and contemporary

Make your mark

Another affordable option for an urban kitchen is Wren’s contemporary Autograph range. It’s simple and unfussy, but you can tweak the look to fit your tastes by mixing things up with the finish, handles and accessories you choose. Use Wren’s Autograph Gloss kitchen as the perfect foundation to create a great layout, using a light colour palette and bold, statement flooring to lift even the smallest space. With some clever planning, you can seamlessly combine both the cooking and the living areas together. Smart, contemporary and stylish, Wren’s kitchens offer countless solutions for creating the space you need in your urban home. Wren will help with the planning – but the look will always be uniquely yours. Dealing with relationship break-ups after Covid ISON HARRISON SOLICITORS PROVIDE ADVICE ON WHAT TO DO NEXT.

s we enter into the second and third phase of the Government’s Covid roadmap, and as life starts to get back to some kind of normal, for some, Covid has uncovered irretrievable cracks in their relationship. Now might therefore be the time to make the first tentative steps towards separation and divorce. Ison Harrison Solicitors provide advice on what to do next in order to make the transition as amicable as possible.

A

Where to begin If Covid has put extra pressure on your marriage and you feel that the only outcome for you and your partner is to divorce, the process can seem really daunting; Where do you start, how long will it take and how much will it cost? The biggest step for most people is the first one, engaging a family solicitor. The acceptance that the marriage is over, the motivation to do something about that and the daunting nature of the task ahead often results in many people staying in an unhappy relationship. These are all huge challenges to have to navigate and the engaging of a solicitor, is the most difficult of all steps. Once you have appointed a family solicitor they will help you to dip your toe into the unknown process of a divorce and will guide you through the various stages of the process.

Top tips for reducing stress and getting the best outcome A few things to remember as you work through the process are: Start as you mean to go on – try and stay as calm and focused as possible rather than letting resentment guide you. Be open and honest – hiding

information only results in increased costs and animosity. Be respectful – If you are feeling hurt it can be difficult to be respectful, however if you make things difficult for your expartner they of course will be less likely to cooperate. Put the children first – The welfare of your children should be the first thing

you consider when making decisions. Children are often most affected by family breakdowns and will remember a bad experience for the rest of their life Consider what you want in the long term and the short term – to ensure that you walk away with a result that works for you both now and in the future For a confidential initial discussion about the steps involved in the divorce process, contact Ison Harrison Solicitors on 0113 284 5000 or email them on family@ih.co.uk To download a copy of their Roadmap to Divorce document which takes you through all of the stages in the process, visit the website www.isonharrison.co.uk/ roadmaptodivorce Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk 11

made in leeds

When food meets interior design SEEKING ILLUMINATION FOR A NEW PROJECT, INTERIOR DESIGN SPECIALISTS DOWSING & REYNOLDS TURNED TO MICHELIN-STARRED CHEF MICHAEL O’HARE. WE SPOKE TO JAMES DOWSING-REYNOLDS ABOUT THE STUNNING RESULTS. he Man Behind The Curtain chef Michael O’Hare is known for his unique style – and not just in his Michelin-starred food. When James Dowsing-Reynolds was looking for someone to collaborate with on an exclusive new lighting range, he was an obvious choice. Michael’s statement style that he features on many dishes, as well as the snowboards on display in his restaurant, was a key influence on James’ decision to collaborate with the chef. “I’ve known Michael for a few years and it’s not just his culinary journey that I’ve been inspired by, but his no-nonsense, rebellious attitude to design and life in

T

general. Anything goes!” said James. The result is a limited edition range of porcelain pendant lights, which are available exclusively at Dowsing & Reynolds. The collection features 50 lights that have been hand-poured by artisan ceramic specialists Laverick & Son at their studio in the Staffordshire Moorlands countryside. Each pendant light has been individually hand-painted by Michael. Using black porcelain slip and a variety of techniques, including spoon drips and brush flicks, the finished, abstract effect features a signature ‘X’ with the added charm of a smiley face motif. The collaboration is a first for

Dowsing & Reynolds which specialises in lighting and design-led fixtures and fittings. Stepping away from the statement metallic finishes synonymous with the brand’s existing portfolio, the new collection has allowed owner and product designer James to expand into the softer, more organic world of ceramic design, but with a twisted edge. “I knew by collaborating with him we’d get something truly unique and by allowing him to have the creative freedom to paint the lights however he felt like on the day, we’d manage to create something raw and remarkable. The lights push design boundaries and I know they’ll be great conversation starters,” added James.

INTERVIEW

Hi James. Tell us about DowsingReynolds.

With all of our products we’re inspired by our interactions with the everyday environment. We specialise in lighting, switches and sockets, hardware, paint and faux foliage so it’s about how you feel when you flick a light switch or pull open a drawer… the more exciting and enjoyable the better! We launched in 2012 after my wife and Dowsing & Reynolds co-owner Ally noticed the similarities between concrete sculptures I was making and expensive concrete light fittings in a magazine. I started experimenting with making lamps and selling the spare components on eBay, and from then the business quickly evolved. Ally built us a website to fulfil the growing orders and our close

friend Tony Green joined to help with packing, eventually becoming Operations Director. We now employ over 50 people across our head office site and our showroom which we opened in Leeds’Victoria Quarter in 2019. How did the collaboration with Michael come about?

I first heard about Michael when we went to his York restaurant The Blind Swine. We were completely blown away by his relaxed attitude to fine dining, and his food! It wasn’t pretentious in any way, in fact there was almost a rebellious ‘rock’ attitude to it and I just loved that. I have a lot of respect for Michael, everything I saw from him – from his plates of food to his restaurant interior –

was beautifully designed. It was all a work of art. We had lots of brilliant nights there and then we were lucky enough to have him cook for us and some friends at our house whilst he was setting up his Leeds restaurant The Man Behind The Curtain. It was one of the best nights we’ve had, we share a love of amazing food and fast cars so we got chatting from there. What did you see in Michael that could translate from food to interiors?

I knew I needed to find a way to bring our brands together – I loved the idea of clashing the worlds of art and interiors so we took porcelain light shades which are crisp and clean, and combined them with Michael’s unique brush flick and splash style he uses on his dishes. It goes

INTERVIEW

against convention, what we’ve created is beautifully unexpected. Michael is similar to me in that he likes trying different things so when he agreed to work on this with us, I knew it’d be a fun project – we thought let’s just see what happens! We were lucky to find such brilliant ceramicists to create the shades for us – Laverick & Son are based in Staffordshire and are a talented father and son team. This is a limited edition set. Are there plans to work with Michael in future?

We’ve had a few talks about what we could do next but nothing is set in stone yet… Any more collaborations in the pipeline?

I definitely want to do more collaborations. I think it’s a great way to incorporate different styles but still create something that feels right for D&R, so it’s finding the right artist that is the tricky part. We’d want to work with someone that matches our aesthetic and because we don’t use pattern in our products, that can be tricky from an artist’s perspective. So if anyone reading this wants to chat about a potential product collaboration I’d love you to get in touch… How has the last 12 months been for you, professionally and personally?

One of the biggest things I’ve come to realise is how much I rely on casual interactions and business networking, or simply just catchups with friends, to help me relieve stress and talk through problems. The past 12 months have made it near impossible for any of us to do that and deal with stress in the usual way. Then there have been the usual constraints of having a toddler in lockdown which I’m sure any parent can relate to! Finding things to entertain a two-year-old has been another big challenge, but equally it’s been amazing being able to spend more time with her too. It’s about finding a balance. How important is lighting in the home?

What I love about lighting, and what made me want to start designing it all those years ago, is how it has the potential to completely change our mood. Harsh lighting can make us feel uneasy, stressed and on edge whereas

Ally, James and Tony Green

soft, warm lighting instantly relaxes us. Having the right combinations in the home will do wonders for wellbeing.

making any other design decision. Don’t worry about trends too much, choose things that you genuinely love.

Moving into spring and summer, attention turns to our outdoor spaces where lighting is often overlooked. How can we make our gardens comfortable evening spaces (without blinding the neighbours!)?

What are your plans for the future?

I’d recommend investing in decent outdoor lighting, it can totally transform your garden and how you use it. But if people are looking for more cost-effective ways, lighting doesn’t always have to be wired in - I love citronella candles for keeping the flies away and you can’t beat a flickering flame. We also use outdoor fairy lights in our garden to create a romantic feel. Low lighting around where you’re entertaining helps set a comfortable mood. What’s the best piece of interiors advice you can give?

First and foremost, always decide how you want to feel in a room before

We’re right in the middle of renovating a new HQ which is going to give us three times the space that we have currently. It’s a really exciting expansion. One thing COVID has made us realise is the importance of giving people space in the office and warehouse, not just for general physical health but wellbeing too. A lot of our staff left the office last March and will be coming back into a totally new location, so we’re carefully managing that transition. We want people to feel at home in the new HQ, it needs to be somewhere they ‘want’ to come to rather than ‘have’ to. It’s been super stressful but also unbelievably exciting and I can’t wait to have the whole team back together. The limited edition collection, priced £324.99, will be available exclusively, while stocks last, at dowsingandreynolds.com Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk 19

Rag’N’Bone Man has enjoyed a busy start to the year with the release of his new album. Life By Misdaventure, supported by cracking upbeat single, All You Ever Wanted. He’ll be touring the UK in autumn with a date at Leeds’s O2 Academy pencilled in for 21 October as well as stops at Manchster (29th) and Newcastle (3 November). Jenny Entwistle caught up with the gravelledvoice singer to find out more.

I’m ready. I’m so bad at being at home for long periods of time. Like my Missus used to just tell me to go out when I got back from tour because she sort of had enough for me because I just sort of walked around the house aimlessly. I really didn’t know what to do. It has been cool, because I’ve got to spend time with my family but at the same time it feels like a limb has been cut off because of that life that has been taken away. It feels positive at the moment though, it feels like we’re on the brink of it, on the horizon of like, it’s the... it’s right in front of us and we’re so ready.

W

Yeah, it sort of feels like I’m starting afresh almost, because it is so different to the last project. I feel it feels good and it does feel like the right time to be releasing it, you know I can’t sit on it forever. The worry was that it’ll just get put off and put off and put off until ‘everything’s back to normal’. But, you know, I think I really needed this, to be honest.

wrote, “I can’t make you love me” (Bonnie Raitt) which is like, in my top five songs of all time. The fact that they were still working, you know they’re both in their 70s, and were like, “we really want to work with you’ and were gassed to work with me and I thought, ‘…these guys want to work with me...They’re like heroes’. So we kind of wrote the rest of the record and decided we’d record it out there as well, because the original plan was to write it and then just come back here and produce it. But I met Mike Elizondo and saw his studio and was like “we have to do it here. There’s no other options.”

You recorded the majority of the album in Nashville. What was it about the city that particularly attracted you?

The eight tracks that you had before you went out there, did they have the Americana vein within them already?

It wasn’t really the city, it was more of the people, to be honest. It’s hard to explain, Nashville itself and the downtown part of Nashville is like country music Disney. Then when you step outside of that part, then you kind of start to get to know the other parts and it’s really, it’s really beautiful and it’s… there’s so many great venues and it’s not just country music either, there’s so much more than that. I went over there in the first place just to see what the song writing was like because I’d got to a point in the UK where I think I had maybe about eight songs for the record, but I’d come to a bit of a hole. I didn’t feel very particularly inspired. I was in a bit of a slump, then it was talked about that I would go away. Nashville, I’ve been there before and I kind of knew a few people. I’d spoken to Foy Vance about Natalie Hemby, and it would be amazing if I worked with her, so I did some writing with her. I also wrote with Allen Shamblin and Mike Reid the guys that

Yeah, I had written all of these songs pretty much exclusively on just acoustic guitar and piano. The plan was to just live with the songs in just that space and not have anything get in the way of it. We went over to Nashville this time last year.We had three weeks set out to record the album then they said, ‘You’ve got to quarantine for two weeks when you get there.’ So, it was me, my keys player and my bass player who I brought out to play on the album, and we had to stay in this house, which was next door to the studio. But we weren’t allowed in the studio. We just had to spend two weeks by ourselves in the house, which was so frustrating! It forced us to make the decision to just record the album as if it were live and put everyone in place. We just played it until we got it right and it was the best decision, even though we were forced to do it.

The new album is a step apart from “Human” sonically, but it feels like a natural progression – are you excited to finally get the music out there as you’ve been sitting on it for about a year?

How much are you looking forward to just gearing up and actually playing these songs?

What’s the song that you’re most looking forward to people hearing?

I wrote this song called “Alone.” It sort of feels a bit 90s, in a way I feel, as listened to a lot of Radiohead at the time, and Oasis and stuff like that. The sonic of it is very much like that, that era of music, but then the subject is really different. It was a conversation I’d have with someone years ago, about the possibility of becoming a parent, and how not everybody wants that. And it’s okay to not want that. As men we don’t really get stick from our families about ‘Oh, when you’re going to have to settle down’ and ‘When are you going to find someone’ or ‘When you’re going to make me a grandparent?’ But women do really get that and it made me think… that must be horrible, being constantly pressured. So that’s what the songs about, the pressure from people to have a family when maybe that’s not what they want. It’s an interesting subject to talk about, it’s kind of sad and it’s kind of a really archaic way of looking at things. How do you think your outlook has changed towards your music and your style since becoming a father?

I think you just become less selfish as a person. It definitely broadens your thought process, but it also makes me a lot more worried about the future so I’ve talked a lot about that on the album. It’s definitely made me a lot more open and a lot more honest. I feel like this record is the most honest I’ve ever been on anything. It’s also made me not so scared of being honest as well. I don’t feel like I should keep that to myself because what will people think of me? I don’t really care now, because what I want from my son is freedom, freedom of expression and freedom of thought and freedom to love whoever they want. Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk 21

Cinema

Like cinemas, theatres will hope to have audiences back from 17 May. The Leeds Grand Theatre is quick off the mark with productions of Swan Lake (17-26 June), Six (29 June-3 July) and Priscilla Queen of the Desert (5-10 July). Strictly’s Anton and Giovanni will also be popping up on 15 July with a dance extravaganza.

Movie theatres are set to re-open, at the earliest, on 17 May and with many of last year’s blockbuster film releases put on hold, this summer should see a tidal wave of new movies hitting the big screen. Marvel’s first cinematic release for almost two years, Black Widow, should finally get it’s release on 9 July and will be followed by Shang Chi and the Ten Rings (3 September). Disney’s offerings come in the form of Cruella (28 May), a live action prequel to 101 Dalmatians, and Luca (18 June), a Disney-Pixar animated adventure set on the Italian Riviera that sees an unlikely but strong friendship grow between a human being and a sea monster disguised as a human. Action lovers can gorge themselves on the latest instalment in the Fast & Furious franchise - number 9 is set to be released on 9 July. If you’re looking for a good family film, Space Jam: A New Legacy (23 July) should tick all the boxes. There’s no Michael Jordan this time but LA Lakers star LeBron James will be joining Bugs Bunny and the Looney Toons for more basketball-fuelled adventures. Finally, musical lovers can marvel at In The Heights (18 June), a feature version of the Broadway musical in which a bodega owner has mixed feelings about closing his store and retiring to the Dominican Republic are inheriting his grandmother’s fortune. Drive-in movies have become popular over the last 12 months and Luna Cinema will be holding a special outdoor event at Harewood House from 3 June with movies including Jurassic Park, Dirty Dancing and Grease.

Comedy Let’s be honest, we could all do with a laugh after the last 12 months. I’m sure there are many gigs to be confirmed but so far you can look forward to seeing Stephen K. Amos (18 June), Sofie Hagen (26 June) and Jason Manford (21 August) at City Varieties. At Leeds Grand Theatre you can chortle to Sarah Millican (11-12 July) and Adam Kay (17 July), whilst at the First Direct Arena is Ricky Gervais (19 June).

Festivals Outdoor festivals are set to resume over coming months and first up will be the Great British Food Festival at Harewood House (29-31 May). The Great Yorkshire Show at Harrogate Showground will also return (13-16 July) and will be held over four days for the first time in its history, a move to allow visitors to access the site freely and safely. The North Leeds Food Festival will follow in Roundhay Park (7-8 August) with the month ending at Bramham Park and the Leeds Festival (27-29 August), one of the first major music festivals to confirm that it was going ahead. Headliners include Foo Fighters, Liam Gallagher and Stormzy.

Music Live music has been a big miss for many but, fingers crossed, performances should be able to resume inside and out from 17 May onwards. Many venues still seem to be airing on the side of caution with gigs pencilled in for later in the year rather than straight away, although no doubt this will change in the coming weeks and months. First Direct Arena have been rescheduling performances left, right and centre and will be hoping that dates with Kings of Leon (15 June), The Isley Brothers (25 June) and Simple Minds (28 August) can all go ahead. Britpop fans will not want to miss a double-header performance by Sleeper and The Bluetones at the O2 Academy on 14 August. Billy Ocean (24 September) and Paloma Faith (3 October) are both scheduled to appear at Harrogate Convention Centre while at Halifax’s stunning Piece Hall you can see Shed Seven (28 August), The Specials (29 August), Cribs (3 September), Richard Hawley (4 September), Manic Street Preachers (10 September) and Kaiser Chiefs (11 September). ‘How to start investing in art?’ he events of 2020 forced the global art market into a long overdue digital revolution. One of the welcome benefits of this shift, is the increased accessibility it has created for art buyers at all levels. For example, greater price transparency of art being sold online has been a major pull for new and first-time art buyers, whereas the convenience of storing digital art investments has been welcomed by more seasoned collectors who already have large traditional collections. Purchasing art has historically been considered something that only the ultra-wealthy indulge in, and this misconception is still quite common today due to the news reports of paintings selling for millions of pounds. However, it’s worth remembering that there are many factors that go into art investment, and prices tend to increase significantly over the years if the right investment is made. For instance, that £50million painting you might have just heard about being sold in the news, may have originally been bought only for a few thousand pounds, or sometimes, even less. I have an artist friend from Bradford whose mum went to college with David Hockney. At one point, while in college, Hockney offered her one of his paintings for £200, and at the time she refused. Well, the rest is history. So it’s not necessary to break the bank to get started in purchasing art. Whether you are looking to start collecting art for your personal enjoyment or as an alternative investment for your capital, or both - you can find incredible pieces even with a modest budget. I’ll explain more on how this can be achieved in a future column. In a nutshell however, when getting started in collecting art, purchasing prints of fine art photography, paintings or digital art can be a great way to see where your preferences lie. You can find art online or shop locally at local art fairs, exhibitions, and galleries. With the increased popularity of purchasing art online, you can even join online art fairs, such as our very own GMAF (Galleria Meera Art Fair) in September 2021. Art fairs can be a great way to browse a much wider range of works than galleries and exhibitions, which instead tend to host a much more concentrated and curated selection of works. With many emerging artists in the market, and with new ways of buying and consuming art – now is the perfect time to get started in building or expanding your art collection.

Cocktails at The Alchemist

o, freedom is finally here, and I couldn’t be any happier to be back out and about. It was incredible to be able to see family and friends, go to the pub, go shopping and do all the little things I previously took for granted. As you’d expect, I’ve wasted no time in filling my little black book to the brim with social occasions and with the sun shining too, I’ve got the spring back in my step. Of course, after such a long time cooped up inside, my first port of call was Haus of XS to get a longoverdue haircut and even a few highlights. I’m not lying when I say I felt a stone lighter once Sara had worked her magic. A lack of natural Vitamin D has also left me looking a little beige, so I dropped into the new Amica Aesthetics Salon on Street Lane for one of their exceptionally good Hydro facials. A goto treatment for celebrities ranging from Paris Hilton to Beyonce, its bespoke nature means everything is tailored towards your specific skin concerns. The treatment offers instant results and I left looking brighter and feeling ten years younger, ready to take on the world. Another place I made a beeline for post-lockdown was Chow Down at Temple Arches in Leeds. It was priceless to see some familiar faces, watch strangers reunite, eat worldclass street food, and soak up the sounds of a live DJ in the sunshine.Yes, an actual live DJ. Then over on Merrion Street, all the bars and restaurants have joined forces to create one big outdoor street party, complete with a new roof that runs the length of the now pedestrianised street. I enjoyed some alfresco action at Yard & Coop, who delivered in spades bringing me that fried chicken fix I had been craving for all winter. I then headed over to Greek Street, where we enjoyed some of the city’s finest cocktails at The Alchemist. Their cocktail boxes have been a godsend these past few months, but you can’t beat the real deal and their mixologists didn’t disappoint. Closer to home, San Carlo Flying Pizza has done an amazing job with one of my fave alfresco dining spots and their

fresh Tagliolini Lobster and Sauvignon Friuli have never tasted so good. Another place to check out is The Leeds Deli over on Moortown Corner, which has become my go-to business meeting spot. Doesn’t matter whether it’s morning cake and coffee, or fresh pizza lunches, they always serve up something amazing. I’m officially addicted to their Cruffins, which everyone should try at least once. They’re next level tasty. For all the beer lovers out there, Springwell from North Brew is a musttry. Located close to Meanwood and with new outdoor seating, this craft beer mecca offers an enviable selection of award-winning drinks that make it well worth the trip. That’s it from me this month but trust me when I say there’s plenty more good stuff hitting Leeds in the next few months. IN THE FIRST OF A NEW COLUMN, CLARE CAROLL TALKS ABOUT PLASMABLAST SKIN TIGHTENING, A 100 PER CENT NATURAL NON-SURGICAL AESTHETIC TREATMENT DESIGNED TO IMPROVE SKIN TONE AND TEXTURE. lasmablast Skin Tightening works by shortening loose, sagging skin and erasing wrinkles. My signature facelift treatment will lift droopy brows, erase crows feet, open your eyes, give you back your cheekbones, open and lift your marionette lines and the pouches at the sides of your mouth and redefine your jawline. It ultimately leaves you with a fresh smoother face and will take years off you at the same time. Plasmablast is 100 per cent natural and to put it simply - I cause many tiny holes (like a cut) and then you heal. These pictures show the facelift treatment, it lasts for years and your skin ages naturally. I get all these scenarios in the salon: “I need a facelift”. “I need fillers”. “I need Botox”. Well, a facelift could set you back £5-12k, fillers £3001,600 and Botox basically temporarily paralyses the muscles, stops your face from moving and after time changes your face altogether. Why wouldn’t you want a more natural alternative? Plasmablast Skin Tightening works by using a specialised device to deliver nitrogen-based pulses of plasma which charges the air just above the skin. This process damages existing skin cells and causes them to contract, meaning the skin’s natural healing process goes into overdrive, thus encouraging fresh new cells to be produced. These include collagen and elastin, which we all know is perfect in minimising the appearance of wrinkles. You will be able to see results immediately after treatment. The results will continue to improve as the skin cells regenerate in the following weeks.

First-class experience GREAT-GRANDMOTHER’S NEW LEASE OF LIFE AFTER KNEE SURGERY. 100-year-old great-grandmother from Leeds has been given a new lease of life following a knee operation. Margaret Marshall had been in a lot of pain with osteoarthritis and could hardly walk – a real blow for the sprightly and independent centenarian, whose party trick is to touch her toes. Now, she is looking forward to getting back out in her beloved garden after ditching her sticks and walking unaided just a couple of months following partial knee replacement surgery. Mrs Marshall, whose home overlooks Roundhay Park, said: “It’s given me a new lease of life. I’m hoping the weather improves soon so I can tend to my rose bushes. I also like to

go to the shop and nearby places like Canal Gardens and Tropical World.” An ambulance driver in Leeds during World War Two, Mrs Marshall is well-known within the Roundhay community, where she has lived for more than 60 years. As well as being part of the local Townswomen’s Guild, performing amateur dramatics and volunteering for meals on wheels, she also went to keep fit classes at Oakwood Parochial Hall right into her 90s, only stopping when the leader of the session retired. Mrs Marshall had the elective surgery at BMI The Duchy Hospital in Harrogate. The operation was carried out by consultant orthopaedic surgeon, Professor Nick London, who also heads the Yorkshire Knee Clinic in Leeds. He said:“In more than 20 years as a consultant, I haven’t

But, as with all my patients, it was a balance between the risk and the benefits. “Mrs Marshall is an extraordinary 100-year-old lady who lives a fit and active life and up until last year was able to do what she wanted. For her, the osteoarthritis was extreme enough that she was potentially going to lose the independence that is so important to her.” Osteoarthritis is caused by wear and tear of the joints and becomes more common and severe for most people as they get older. The pain can affect everything from sporting activities to walking short distances and, eventually, sitting or sleeping. Partial knee replacements have significantly better outcomes and a quicker recovery compared to full knee replacements. Even though Mrs Marshall had the operation before she received her first Covid jab in January, she had no worries at all about going into hospital. She said:“The whole experience was first class. The Duchy was very well geared up for it all, with the necessary restrictions in place. All the staff were very friendly and it was very well organised. “I stayed in for two nights and have had follow-up calls and even some Zoom sessions. I’m very grateful to everybody for it going so well.” Consultant orthopaedic surgeon, Professor Nick London

Marvellous Margaret Marshall

Sue Atkinson, Director of Clinical Services at BMI The Duchy, said elective surgery had been taking place at The Duchy since the summer, following successful collaboration with the local NHS Trust. She added:“We have been Covid-free here since the start of the pandemic, with a really robust system in place to ensure we are able to deliver the surgery that people need. Safety comes first but it’s also about making everything as seamless as possible for patients and to allay any concerns. We worked closely with Mrs Marshall’s family to deliver the best care we could.” Mrs Marshall has three sons, six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Her husband Weir, who she married in the early 1940s, died in 2002 aged 91. In May she celebrated her 100th birthday with a few close family and friends in her garden after a planned party for 80 people at Weetwood Hall Hotel was cancelled due to coronavirus restrictions. BMI The Duchy Hospital offers a range of services including surgical specialties, diagnostic services including MRI, X-Ray and Ultrasound and health and wellbeing to patients in North Yorkshire, Leeds and York. San Carlo Flying Pizza Flying Pizza has been a firm fixture on the Leeds dining and social scene since its foundation in 1974. The Roundhay restaurant became part of the San Carlo family in 2010. Following a lavish transformation, the much-loved Italian restaurant is now more stylish and glamorous than ever. Their stunning outdoor terrace, which can accommodate up to 100 people, is open from 12-11pm every day and has been extended with additional covered table seating at the front of the restaurant – it has a great view of Street Lane. Call the restaurant on 0113 266 6501 or book online at https://sancarlo.co.uk/restaurants/flyingpizza-leeds/

The Tickled Trout The Tickled Trout opened its doors for lunch and dinner from 12 April. There’s also a covered den area, which has a ski lodge feel, can seat up to 20 guests and has a big log burner, and there’s also lots of sunny outside tables to turn up on any given day. There’s a funky new street food menu with lots of fresh seafood. “We are big on fish!” said owner Karl Mainey. Guests can call 01423 359006, where Katie will take your booking. EATING OUT

Bringing Syrian street food to Leeds OPENING IN THE MIDDLE OF A PANDEMIC IS NO MEAN FEAT BUT IS ONE BAB TOOMA SEEM TO HAVE IN TAKEN IN ITS STRIDE. t’s been a long wait but one that has been ultimately worth it. Opening during a national lockdown seems unthinkable but is something that Syrian street food restaurant Bab Tooma achieved, initially with takeaway orders then with outside dining from 12 April. Hopefully by the time you read this, they will be welcoming diners inside for the first time. Bab Tooma has two restaurants in Bradford, first opening in 2016, and now occupying this charming location opposite Oakwood clock on Roundhay Road. A newly-erected alfresco dining area is screened off from the hustle and bustle and seats 24 diners comfortably with extra tables around the corner after 5pm. Wooden tables and traditionally-patterned benches are complemented by hanging foliage and fairy lights; coupled with the smells emanating from the kitchen, it had a distinct Mediterranean feel. Bab Tooma takes its name from one of the main seven gates that surrounds Damascus, believed to be the world’s oldest inhabited city. It was built by the Greeks and called Venus, after Goddess of Love & Beauty. Damascus has been in Roman, Arab and Ottoman possession and these many influences are evident in the food they serve. “We are proud to bring people together in our little gem to have a taste of the ideal authentic feasts from all over the Middle East,” said co-owner Vijay Kommaraju.

I

We visited on gloriously sunny lunchtime, taking a table on the charming terrace (it’s heated too in case the weather isn’t as kind). Bab Tooma are operating a smaller menu at present but this will be extended once the inside reopens. There’s still plenty to choose from,

EATING OUT

though, and more than enough to sate even the most ravenous of appetites. If you’ve visited a Middle Eastern or Turkish restaurant before you’ll have a good idea of what to expect: fluffy breads, tasty dips, grilled meats and sweet, sticky desserts - and there’s lots more besides. I’d brought my dad along and with such a large amount of dishes to pick from, we decided to let the restaurant choose for us. Our waiter recommended a sharing platter for two, complemented by some of their most popular dishes who were we to argue? The food is serve mezze style and is brought to the table at regular intervals. After appetisers of lentil soup, we started with Muhammara (£5), a grilled red pepper and almond dip which was served with gorgeously light flatbreads. It had a smoky and spicy flavour and was just delicious. This was followed by halloumi (£5) and kebbeh (£4.99), deep fried wheat balls filled with marinated mince lamb cooked in yoghurt sauce. I expected the latter to be much firmer (a bit like arancini) but they broke apart with the slightest touch of the fork to reveal the subtly spiced lamb inside. Before moving onto our main course (if you can call it that) we cleansed our palates with Bab Tooma’s take on the mojito - no alcohol but crushed ice flavoured with lemon and mint (£3.99) which was instantly refreshing and the perfect partner to our dishes. Our sharing platter – “The Feast” (£35 for 2/3 people) – was brought to the table on a hot plate balanced over hot coals and was as much a feast for the eyes as for the stomach. It consisted of two lamb kabab skewers, a chicken Taouk skewer, lamb fillet, two lamb chops and two chicken fillets, all served on a bed of deliciously fragrant basmati rice. If that wasn’t enough, there was also side order of chips and roasted vegetables and chilli and garlic mayo dips. It was hard to know where to start but start we did and couldn’t fault a single thing. The kabab skewers were delicately spiced, the chicken had that lovely chargrilled exterior and was deliciously moist in the middle, the lamb was tantalisingly tender, the rice was delicious, even the chips were fantastic. It was a dish that certainly lived up to its name. Dessert may have seemed a stretch too

far but the restaurant insisted we tried two of their most popular dishes baklava ice cream (£6) and kunafa (£4) - complemented by one of their Arabic tea pots (£4.50), which was flavoured with mint and cardamom and a great way to finish the meal. Baklava you may know well from visits to Greek restaurants and this version was as you’d expect, sweet, sticky and nutty but with a vanilla ice cream centre. Kunafa is a traditional middle eastern dish and is made with shredded filo pastry soaked in sweet syrup and typically layered with cheese. Bab Tooma‘s had an almost custard-like quality and wasn’t overly sweet as you’d perhaps imagine it could be, the balance was just right.

Bab Tooma has had an admirable start to life but the best news is that there’s much more to come. We loved our alfresco experience but opening the restaurant inside from 17 May should take things to the next level. Book a table while you can. DRINKS

Spring selection IN THE FIRST OF A NEW MONTHLY COLUMN, JASON ADLAM, OF J P ADLAM GIN, OFFERS UP SOME TASTY COCKTAIL RECIPES, PERFECT FOR WARMER MONTHS AHEAD. ow that spring is nearly upon us and we look forward to the long hot English Summer, why not try a few cocktails with J P Adlam No 8 Gin, our award-winning London Dry gin. Handcrafted in Yorkshire for a pure and individual taste offering a unique quality. Here is our selection of the taste of spring and summer.

N

The J P Adlam Gin & Tonic Our J P Adlam No 8 Gin has been created to provide a totally different taste profile with different tonics. With a Mediterranean Tonic the orange and lemon botanicals will come bouncing out, great over ice with a slice of orange or lemon. With Elderflower Tonic the lavender botanicals will come flowing out of the gin which will go well over ice with a handful of raspberries. Don’t forget the traditional Indian Tonic, this will bring forth the cubeb peppers, grains of paradise and star anise. Again, enjoy over ice with a garnish of your taking.

The Bramble The Negroni A popular Italian cocktail dating back approximately 100 years. Our version is made of one part J P Adlam No 8 Gin (of course), one part vermouth rosso (which simply means red and sweet), and one part Campari, garnished with an orange peel. In Italy it is considered an aperitif (meaning it should be taken before a meal to stimulate the appetite). A traditionally made Negroni is stirred, not shaken (Mr. Bond), and built over ice in an old-fashioned or rocks glass. So, let’s raise a drink to General Pascal Olivier de Negroni, who is largely regarded as being its creator.

The Elderflower Collins A truly fresh and fruity springtime twist on a Tom Collins (which is made from J P Adlam No 8 Gin, lemon juice and carbonated water). The twist comes from swapping the carbonated water for elderflower cordial which you can buy from most supermarkets now or online. Shake the double J P Adlam Gin with the lemon juice (a single shot), sugar syrup (a little drop or two) and a good dash of elderflower cordial. Pour over ice in a tall glass and fill to the top with soda water. Decorate with your favourite herb and the lovely warm evenings will never be the same again.

By comparison to the Negroni, the bramble is a little over 40 years old, created in the 1980s by Dick Bradsell and is without doubt the “springtime cocktail” to enjoy in your garden as you chat to friends. Fill a glass with crushed ice. Build a double J P Adlam Gin, a shot of lemon juice and half a shot of simple sugar syrup over the top. Stir and add a shot of Crème de Mure (blackberry liqueur). Garnish with two blackberries and a lemon slice. The bramble is meant to represent a truly British cocktail, sweet and tasty.

Kirsty Dodds

ingle-use plastics are a major threat to the health of our planet. Made from finite fossil fuels and taking hundreds of years to degrade, the single use plastics harm the natural environment and have a significant impact on our oceans. It’s something that Kirsty Dodds is very passionate about, so much so it led to her starting her own business aimed at offering zero-waste and low waste items. “I was going through a period of trying to challenge myself personally, do something different with my life,” she explained. “A BBC researcher posted on social media that the BBC were looking for a family to be featured in their story #bbcplasticfree. We were tasked with trying to reduce our single-use plastic for a whole week to demonstrate whether it was easy to do… it wasn’t! “I then had the idea that we could bring back the old way of shopping and customers could reduce the plastic by buying loose, refilling and shopping more locally. Plastic isn’t the enemy, it’s the single use stuff that is.” The Refilling Station started as an outdoor market stall in Chapel Allerton in November 2018. Kirsty’s tenacity meant that with the help of her husband she ran the market stall even with a fractured foot and crutches during the cold winter months. The Refilling Station became a permanent addition in

S

March 2019 when Kirsty received the keys to a shop at 176 Harrogate Road in Chapel Allerton. The idea is that you bring your own containers and buy what you need without the need for additional packaging. Such has been the success of The Refilling Station, Kirsty opened a further shop in Harrogate on Cold Bath Road following on from a concession in another retailer. The Refilling Station stocks pantry goods including loose natural foods such as oats, rice, dried fruit, nuts, buckwheat and lentils. They even stock groceries such as nut butters, tempeh, oat milk, oils, local honey, flour, treats and much more. They can also refill your coffee jars and tea caddies without bags and plastic as well as your herb and spice jars. For the home you can purchase laundry powder and liquid, washing-up liquid, fabric conditioner, toilet cleaner, multi surface spray, white vinegar and floor cleaner They also stock loads of other eco-friendly products such as rubber gloves, recycled foil, kitchen cloths, toilet roll, wax food wraps and more. The Refilling Station can also stock your bathroom with a range of shampoos, conditioners and shower gels. You can purchase a starter bottle and refill next time or you can bring your own to fill. Products to make your personal care routine as eco-friendly as

possible haven’t been overlooked and you can buy soap and shampoo bars, jars of toothpaste, reusable face wipes and plastic-free, natural skincare. “The term zero-waste actually refers to the amount of waste consumers produce whilst shopping,” added Kirsty. “It would be very difficult for shops like us to be completely zero-waste because even though most of our stock comes in 25kg sacks or 12.5kg boxes, this packaging is still waste! We do try and use all we can again or responsibly recycle that which we can’t.” Both premises have been open throughout the national and local lockdowns and with restrictions easing and town centres starting to open up, they are hoping to encourage more people to visit their ethically-minded stores. If you want to make a plastic pledge and reduce your footprint, take small steps with a trip to The Refilling Station. SPRING AND SUMMER BRINGS A WEALTH OF COLOUR. BY NIGEL EATON, HEAD OF RHS GARDEN HARLOW CARR SHOP & PLANT CENTRE. 1. Tie in climbing rose shoots as they lengthen, preferably on the horizontal because this encourages more flowers. Use a tie material such as “soft tie” which will not cut into the stems. 2. Start to harden off bedding plants and tender vegetables by leaving them out during the day to get them used to being outside in changeable conditions, invest in some horticultural fleece and cover over at night if frost is not forecast, but bring inside if it is! 3. Sow some Swiss chard seed in the flower border or veg patch for a colourful show in the garden and later a tasty accompaniment to autumn hearty meals, the variety “Bright Lights” come in a rainbow of colours. The young leaves can be picked for summer salad or leave the plants to mature and steam like spinach. 4. Sow some Scented Stock (Mattholia bicornis) or some Cupani Sweet Pea seeds near the area you like to sit on warm August evenings and enjoy the heady fragrance these easy annual plants bring. 5. Put out slug traps to capture the small slugs that do most of the damage to herbaceous tender shoots and Hosta leaves. Use one that uses beer as bait so that it is safe for wildlife and empty the traps onto the bird table so the birds still get this valuable food source. 6. Sow peas and beans directly into prepared ground or planters. Make sure, if you are using a vegetable patch that you are rotating the crop so that soil pests are deterred. 7. In the greenhouse start to feed plants to increase their crop potential, for fruiting plants such as tomatoes and peppers use a high potash feed. 8. If you have planted containers now is the time to water them with a solution containing “nematodes” that will eradicate vine weevil grubs eating the roots of your precious plants. These useful natural predators are available either in garden centres or online. 9. With the increase in vegetable and plant waste, going to your your compost heap, check for residents such as grass snakes, toads etc and if there are no incumbents, turn your heap and add some compost activator to every six-inch layer as you add more waste. 10. Remember to keep your bird feeders and birdbaths replenished to keep parent birds in much needed resources for young fledglings.

MOTORING

Great tradition The new Bentley Continental GT Speed is the most dynamic road car in the carmaker’s 101-year history and an ultimate performance-focused interpretation of the world’s benchmark luxury Grand Tourer. Designed, engineered, developed and handcrafted in Bentley’s carbon neutral luxury automotive factory, this new thirdgeneration model builds on a long tradition of Speed variants. Originally introduced with the highly-acclaimed, first generation Continental GT Speed in 2007 – itself inspired by the 3-litre Speed models of the 1920s.The latest GT Speed continues the bloodline by representing the ultimate combination of luxury and performance in a Grand Touring package. It is equipped with an uprated version of Bentley’s renowned 6.0-litre W12 TSI engine, delivering 659PS (650bhp) whilst maintaining an extraordinary 900Nm (664 lb.ft) of torque. With exceptional handling, this results in a top speed of 208mph (335 km/h) and 0-60mph in 3.5 seconds.

SPEED IS THE NAME OF GAME FOR ONE LEGENDARY CARMAKER, WRITES RICHARD ABBEY.

Small and accessible

The Volkswagen Touareg R is the first fully-fledged production R model to be launched with an electrified powertrain. Capable of both impressive performance as well as ultra-low emissions, the Touareg R features a petrol plugin hybrid system producing 462PS and 700Nm of torque. This impressive output makes the Touareg R the most powerful production Volkswagen to date. At the heart of the Touareg R is a sophisticated 3.0-litre V6 TSI eHybrid plug-in powertrain. Not only is it powerful, but it is also smooth and refined and, moreover, is frugal enough to make the R the most running-cost-friendly model in the Touareg range, with fuel economy and CO2 emissions of 94.2 mpg and 67g/km (combined cycle) respectively. A 28-mile electric-only range accessible in the Touareg R’s EMODE adds to the model’s low-CO2 credentials, with the 14.3 kWh (net) battery reducing running costs for this versatile performance SUV. Prices start at £71,995.

Hyundai has unveiled the BAYON, an all-new crossover SUV designed specifically for Europe. It will become the latest and smallest member of the carmaker’s expanding SUV family. The all-new BAYON features a compact exterior, a roomy interior, and a long list of intelligent safety and connectivity features which make it stand out in its segment. With this, the all-new BAYON democratises technology, making high-tech safety and connectivity features accessible for all. BAYON boasts excellent fuel efficiency and highly competitive CO2 emissions ranking thanks to an updated Kappa engine family. At the top of the line-up is a 1.0litre T-GDi engine with 48V and 120 or 100 PS. This can be coupled with the six-speed intelligent Manual Transmission or a seven-speed dual clutch transmission.

When pre-reservation customers opt to fulfil their order they will benefit from a tailored charging service, featuring one year’s free subscription to KiaCharge Plus, alongside access to Ionity’s pan-European ultra-rapid EV charging network. The baseline EV6 will start from £40,895 and brings long-range, zero-emissions power, 800V ultra-fast charging and distinctive styling to the crossover SUV market. 56 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

Bigger and bolder Get ready to get your game face back on, as Leeds-based megabrand Roxy Ball Room is set to return bigger, better, and bolder on Monday 17 May when it reopens its doors to reveal a supersized gaming utopia spanning three floors. The revamped venue will still focus heavily on the ball games, food, and drink that the brand has become famous for, whilst unveiling some exciting new gaming options to make it the city’s premier gaming bar. Former sister venue Roxy Arcade has been completely ripped out and refitted as Roxy Ball Room, creating one mammoth gamer’s paradise with its spacious basement area. Here, a diverse range of entertainment will be available offering endless hours of fun, along with a shiny new bar area. This includes an all-new Crazy Pool course, which offers up an insanely playable mash-up of crazy golf and pool. Players must navigate a variety of obstacles to pot the ball on a waist-high mini-golf course bathed in UV light, using a pool cue instead of a putter.

Joy of six for 50th anniversary Leeds Playhouse has announced an exciting season of productions and exhibitions to celebrate its milestone 50th anniversary as it looks forward to welcoming audiences back to the building safely in May. Among the highlights are: • Six specially-commissioned monologues by northern writers with strong connections to the Playhouse • A new family show that will open in Playhouse Square before embarking on a community tour • An exhibition of photographs, stories and memories showcasing 50 years in the life of the theatre • A collaboration with community story tellers from across our city to capture and celebrate what Leeds means to us Leeds Playhouse will be welcoming audiences back into the building for the first time since November, safely reintroducing them to live theatre with six new monologues written by six writers, each with a strong connection to the Playhouse, and each with their own perspectives on Leeds and the region. The writers – Simon Armitage, Leanna Benjamin, Kamal Kaan, Alice Nutter, Maxine Peake, and Stan Owens – have each taken a particular decade from across the Playhouse’s lifespan covering the 1970s to the 2020s as their inspiration, creating a diverse collection of stories firmly rooted in the North.
