Harewood’s festive season is well underway

elcome to the November edition of Northside. It’s not quite Christmas (yet) but we’re already feeling naughty and nice here at Northside. Naughty in that we’ve been stocking up our drinks cabinet in advance of the festive season. However you celebrate this Christmas, we find that premium and small-batch spirits are all the rage – and they help to support local independent businesses too. We pick out some choice bottles and have some winter cocktail ideas too. To balance things out, we also take a look at the upturn in cycling. We talk to the experts to find out why it has proved so popular over the last few months and have some local rides for you to try, which is nice. There’s also the ususal mix of fashion, beauty, home and garden and motoring as well as the start of our Christmas Gift Guide. See you next month for a special festive issue.

Raising aspirations QUEEN ETHELBURGA’S COLLEGIATE INTRODUCES US TO THEIR QE FUTURES PROGRAMME, A WHOLE SCHOOL APPROACH TO CAREERS GUIDANCE AIMED AT SUPPORTING THEIR STUDENTS TO MAKE INFORMED DECISIONS ABOUT THEIR FUTURE. he Collegiate’s dedicated careers department is testament to the importance it places on effective careers education, advice and guidance for its young people. Principal Jeff Smith explains: “Within the careers education curriculum at QE we work on raising aspirations and encouraging our students to consider a broad and ambitious range of careers, whilst empowering them to plan and manage their own futures. We set high expectations so that every student is stretched and acquires the attributes that employer’s value. This helps students to realise their potential. “The careers team work closely with a number of higher education institutions, apprenticeship providers, employers and with the armed forces to ensure that students have the most up-to-date information and knowledge of career opportunities. “Lessons are delivered at an ageappropriate level to ensure our students understanding and growth of knowledge as they progress through their career journey. We encourage students to be aspirational in their goals and provide the help and guidance they need to give them the best chance of success. “During Key Stage 2, we introduce students to different career possibilities and begin to explore with them what it means to have a career. “At Key Stage 3 we inspire students to take their first steps towards their future

career planning. The focus moves from understanding their own skills, qualities and values, to linking these with GCSE decisions and possible careers. “In Years 10 and 11, the QE Futures programme is aimed at reinforcing students’ previous learning and building on their experiences to help them move forward with their career planning. In addition, all students are offered one-toone careers interviews to personalise

their experience and help develop individual action plans. “In Years 12 and 13, as students begin their final years in general education, we offer support to prepare them for their Post-18 decision making. Whether students are looking to apply to their chosen university, or looking at alternative routes into employment, one to one guidance is tailored to their individual needs.” To find out more about QE’s approach to education as we support our students to achieve their aspirations; through the quality of teaching delivered, extensive extra-curricular opportunities offered, and strong pastoral care provided, visit: www.qe.org.

WHAT’S GOING ON LEEDS? JORDAN ODU HAS MANAGED TO WORK AN IMPRESSIVE SOCIAL SCHEDULE OVER THE LAST MONTH. don’t know about you, but I’m determined not to let the fun police ruin my autumn. I love this time of year and have so far managed to work an impressive social schedule whilst sticking to the rules and keeping safe. It can be done people. Like so many of my friends, I’ve not seen enough of my mum in 2020, so we always make it count when we do get together. Our recent trip to Leeds Cookery School for their awesome Taste of Malaysia class was amazing. Run by acclaimed chef Simon Chappelow, we were put through our paces and shown how to whip up a sublime Beef Rendang curry from scratch, as well as the best Chicken Satay skewers outside of Asia. It’s debatable as to whether I put these skills to use in my own kitchen, but this is the kind of experience everyone should have on their bucket list and is ideal for gifting a loved one this Christmas (especially if they take you with them!). Speaking of food, I’ve wasted no time in diving into the latest menus from some of my go-to restaurants. It’s great to see venues adapting to the continuous curveballs 2020 keeps pelting at them and Chophaus is no exception. Their new brunch menu elevates the daytime dining concept and is full of mouthwatering creations. Of course, I had to try the Bielsa on my recent trip and it did not disappoint.

Named in honour of Marcelo and his trailblazing success with Leeds United, this prime cut of Argentinian sirloin is a suitably triumphant dish that floored me with its succulence. If you love steak, then you don’t want to sleep on this limited-edition dish. Another Leeds favourite that continues to innovate is Tattu, and they’ve truly exceeded themselves with their latest collection. Hit up their Wok Fired Angry Bird if you like it spicy, or the melt in the mouth Shredded Lamb Buns with chilli oyster sauce and sticky dates. Cocktail wise, the White Espresso Martini is an ingenious concoction that turns the beloved tipple upside down. An instant favourite that commands repeat visits to the bar, whether you’re dining there or not. Just a stone’s throw away from Tattu, I was over the moon to discover the return of Blackhouse after what feels like an eternity. It was great to see they haven’t lost the Midas touch when it

comes to premium steak and Malbec in an amazing atmosphere. There’s also been plenty of action over near my neck of the woods in North Leeds. Firstly, Chapel Allerton has recently welcomed XS Hair, who I’m pretty certain moved out of the city centre to be closer to their number one customer. Sara never fails to tame my unruly curls, and her extended team are a force to be reckoned when it comes to everything hair. We’ve also begun working with Man Firth Electric, who stock hands down the best E-Scooters man can find. Not only do they make zipping around the neighbourhood super-fast, but they’re an incredibly costeffective and eco-friendly way to travel. Check them out online and watch this space for their forthcoming Leeds showroom. This brand is gonna be big. With winter on the horizon, I’ve taken it upon myself to plump myself up for the chillier months and Slice of Yorkshire and The Savvy Baker have been helping me out with the best brownies in the county. Delivered fresh

to your door, I can’t recommend these heavenly bakes enough. If you happen to live in the Moortown area and have become tired of working from home, then you might want to drop into Rand for your caffeine (and cake) fix. With classic drinks sitting alongside the likes of the Chilli Mocha and White Hot Chocolate, you’ll never tire of their exceptional menu. And finally, in a year where seemingly everything was

cancelled, I cannot wait to drop into Chow Down at Temple Arches for their socially distanced Halloween special. Those going can expect a mix of incredible food, live DJ’s, and spooky treats with their Day of the Dead themed special. I hope to see you there, but until next time, remember hands, face, space.

Northern jewel EARN-BACK POTENTIAL WITH NEW-ENGLAND STYLE LUXURY LAKESIDE AND BY-THE-SEA HOLIDAY HOMES FROM ARIA RESORTS. he long-awaited new development of holiday homes, set within a private gated estate, has now launched at The Bay Filey, Yorkshire, the northern jewel in the crown from the UK’s fastest-growing resort company, Aria. Whether looking to downsize, the kids have flown the nest, or simply looking for a second home, Aria Resorts’ leisure homes offer an affordable alternative to more traditional homes in the market. From the stunning sunrise to sunset, there is something to suit everyone at The Bay Filey. Offering the best of both worlds, the New England clapperboard Meadow Lodges’, priced from an extremely competitive £185,000, are set by a beautiful lake, yet are within just a few minutes from the stunning Filey Beach – recently voted amongst the top six beaches in the world on TripAdvisor and 2018 Beach of the Year by the Sunday Times, and Filey town. The new lodges provide a fixed return investment option of seven per cent over three to five years for qualifying investors; this attractive option includes all site and management fees and allocation of the property for own use for two weeks during off-peak season. Alternatively, there is the opportunity to take advantage of Aria Resorts’ flexible managed letting service which gives owners more opportunities to enjoy their new holiday home themselves, whilst also earning an income without the hassle of managing it themselves. Filey has been a ‘forever’ destination for families from all over Yorkshire, and beyond, but the available ‘bolthole’ market just had a significant upgrade with the launch of Aria’s distinctive new Nikki, Tahiti and Kontiki luxury lodges. Due to a high and immediate demand, the Kontiki lodges have now sold out but there are plenty of sister lodges available. Featuring porthole windows and a natural slate roof, the new ‘coastal cool’ lodges are unlike anything else in the North East and sport two or three

bedrooms. All are designed around the outdoors, and feature relaxed open-plan lifestyle living, kitchen and dining areas. Combined with luxurious fittings and furniture they provide a spacious, informal setting for family and friends. All come with private decks, and are set in the exclusively landscaped, peaceful area of The Meadows, a new natureembracing part of The Bay, Filey’s location. Paul Nicols, sales director for Aria Resorts, says: “Our stunning new Nikki and Tahiti luxury lodges are bright and modern with a traditional feel. Within easy access of the M62 and Leeds, they are already in high demand. So much so, in fact that we have sold out of the

Kontiki lodges since they were released onto the market in August. “All of our properties are available for owners to use throughout the year and we see our owners absolutely maximising their piece of Yorkshire countryside-by-the-seaside ‘heaven’ as many of them refer to it. The resort is popular as a multi-generational retreat, where the holiday home can be enjoyed by all the family with the nature-reserve style landscape, nearby beach and the charm of Filey town itself.” To find out more about the new holiday home development and to arrange a viewing visitwww.ariaresortshomes.co.uk or telephone 01723 518130.

A great time to get on your bike LOCKDOWN SAW A SURGE IN CYCLISTS HITTING THE ROADS AND TRAILS. RICHARD ABBEY LOOKS AT THE GROWING ATTRACTION AND HAS SOME RIDES TO GET YOU STARTED.

hen lockdown started, daily exercise was limited to one hour a day, which for most of us, generally consisted of a short walk with those within our household close to home. As these restrictions eased from the middle of May, with an unlimited amount of exercise allowed, walks got longer and we ventured much further afield, perhaps discovering routes that we had not come across before. Cyclists had a bit more leeway and, after being limited to short, solo rides to begin with, could meet up with fellow riders for much longer excursions. It

W

almost felt like being ‘back to normal’. It is believed that cycling levels increased by up to 300 per cent during the lockdown period with a predicted 1.3 million people buying bikes. The government were quick to jump on board with a £2billion package announced to create ‘a new era for walking and cycling’. Pop-up bike lanes with protected space for cycling, wider pavements, safer junctions, and cycle and bus-only corridors were created in towns and cities throughout the country supported by the existing Cycle to Work scheme

and new £50 cycle repair vouchers. Has there been a better time to get on a bike? Mike Hudson, who rides with the cycling club Harrogate Nova, goes some way to explaining why cycling has proved so popular. “Good weather and quiet roads have been a big bonus and is been about the only sport we’ve been allowed to do as well as golf. “Unfortunately the club has been suspended over the last six months as we have been very conscious not to attract the wrong attention by riding as a club group. By July we did manage to get our

CYCLING

“Boris had made it clear that cycling was OK, traffic was practically nonexistent and the weather was perfect. Plus, we are so lucky to have the Peak District on our doorstep.”

evening time trial leagues underway and had record turnouts.” Martin Maltby, who runs Don Valley Cycles, saw a significant upturn and eventually found himself unable to keep up with demand, as he explains: “We were very busy during that period [lockdown] until the stock of new bikes became a big problem. Even now we don’t have any new bikes coming through from our suppliers so we are keeping ticking over doing repairs and servicing.” Cycling has not only been convenient over the last few months but it has enormous health benefits too, as Martin says: “It’s low impact, it causes less strain and injuries than most other forms of exercise, and cycling uses all of the major muscle groups as you pedal. “It’s easy - unlike some other sports, cycling does not require high levels of physical skill. Most people know how to ride a bike and, once you learn, you don’t forget. It’s also good for strength and stamina and it can be as intense as you want, cycling can be done at very low intensity to begin with, if recovering from injury or illness, but can be built up to a demanding physical workout.” “The main thing is as well,” adds Martin, “is that cycling is a fun way to get fit. The adventure and buzz you get from coasting down hills and being outdoors means you are more likely to continue to cycle regularly, compared to other physical activities that keep you indoors or require special times or places.” These are sentiments echoed by mobile bike mechanic Barry Parker. “Cycling is a great way of getting fit and losing weight,” he said. “It has great cardio abilities and can be enjoyed with hardly any money spent. It’s very social with mountain bike and road clubs all over the UK for all abilities and great for commuting to work at a low cost. It’s also good for mental health.” While regular riders have been taking advantage of the quieter roads, for novices it can be hard to know where to start. What kind of bike do you need? Where should you be riding? They’re all valid questions perhaps best left to those in the know, whether that’s someone you already know or one of the many cycling shops in the city. “It really depends on a lot of factors how old are you, what sort of cycling do you want to do, and so on. There’s a bike for every type of journey as well as some

that will go pretty much anywhere,” says cycling blogger Simon Geller, to those who are thinking about getting a bike. “For city cycling I‘d recommend a hybrid with an upright riding position so you can keep a good eye on what’s going on around you. A low-gear option will get you around in most towns and cities but if you find the hills too daunting you should consider an electric bike. “For long-distance trips you can’t beat the classic tourer, whereas if you want to burn around the countryside a road bike will suit you - don’t take them on trails though, there’s a clue in the name. and that’s what mountain bikes are for.” Mountain bikes and hybrid bikes have proved particularly popular at Don Valley Cycles but you’ll have to think beyond the bike too, with safety and security accessories required too. “Some safety accessories are a good idea - bright clothing, lights, and you should consider wearing a helmet, although you don’t have to and they don’t make you invulnerable. Plus a good lock - spend at least ten per cent of the value of the bike. You can get third party insurance by joining one of the cycling organisations like Cycling UK.” Barry Parker’s business saw a big upturn during the lockdown period, with many people looking for help with new bikes are maintenance for ones that had probably been sat in the garage for months on end. “There was a big uptake in cycling due to gyms and swimming baths being closed and the government saying avoid public transport,” he said. “Since Covid restrictions hit the UK my business went up about 60 per cent and I had a big volume of new customers. The bikes were mainly ones that had been bought online as bike shops had completely sold out of low to mid-level bikes so bought from online retailers and gave them to me in boxes to build.” The good thing about cycling is that it is very easy to take up - get a bike and you’re good to go, but there is one thing to bear in mind, particularly if you’re commuting or riding on the roads for the first time. As Barry explains: “Read the cycle part of the Highway Code so you know the law and where you stand.” That’s sage advice for motorists too. If you’re thinking about hitting the roads - or the trails - here are a few rides in and around Leeds and Harrogate to get you started. Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk 19

CYCLING

RIDE 1:

Moonraker’s Cycle Ride Distance: 6.6 miles Your starting point is Colne Valley Leisure Centre, New Street, Slaithwaite, West Yorkshire, HD7 5AB. This great route from the village of Slaithwaite, heads along the historic Huddersfield Narrow Canal. This route is steeped in history with the legendary tale of the smugglers who were caught ‘raking for the moon’. There is more old tales to keep you entertained on this route as it heads along the towpath through fields and woodlands, crossing quiet roads on a virtually traffic free route. Enjoy seeing lots of farms and wildlife along the way. The industrial history of the area can also be seen in the many mills the route will pass. Suitable for riders both young and old, the route is along the canal towpath, so is as flat as it can be!

RIDE 2:

River Ouse Cycle Ride Distance: 6.8 miles Your starting point is Rowntree Park car park, Terry Avenue, York, North Yorkshire, YO23 1JQ. This is a great route that takes you from Rowntree Park in York to open country side by passing many local landmarks. The direction heads out of York passing the Knavesmire and travels into Bishopthorpe. The route is also educational as it teachs us about our solar system with its scale model of the planets and their distances from each other. This version of the route will take us as far as the planet Jupiter!

hristmas is not cancelled – yet. The ongoing pandemic has created a constantly shifting landscape and let’s be honest, we don’t really know whether we’re coming or going. With the ‘Rule of Six’, 10pm curfews, social distancing and restrictions on the number of households meeting (at the time of writing), this year’s festive celebrations are going to be very different. Chances are they’ll be no big office party; these are likely to be much smaller affairs or may not even happen at all. Getting together with friends and family is going to be limiting too with the new rules and we still don’t know if we’ll all be able to sit round the dinner table for turkey and all the trimmings. But don’t let it get you down. This year’s celebrations might have to be built on shifting sands but that doesn’t mean they have to be cancelled altogether, you might just have to get a bit more creative. Multiple, smaller gatherings at home spread over the festive season might be the way forward, for example. If this is the case, and you’re planning on inviting friends and family round for dinner or drinks, you’ll need a well-stocked drinks cabinet – wines, beers and plenty of choice when it comes to spirits. Gordons, Bacardi, Bells and a bottle of Smirnoff Red just won’t cut it if you want to impress. Premium and small-batch spirits have become increasingly popular over recent years with sales predictably increasing in the run up to Christmas. With that in mind, we take a look at four of the staples that every drinks cabinet should contain – whisky, gin, vodka and rum – what you should be looking to buy and what to do with them, including some great cocktail ideas. Alison and Adrian Murray are custodians of The Wee Dram in Bakewell, Derbyshire and have been providing expert advice on all aspects of whisky for over 22 years. “Our concept is very simple, to provide customers with a great range of whiskies from all around the world, such as Kentucky Bourbon, Canadian Rye, Irish, English, Welsh, Swedish, Blended Scotch and of course Single Malt Scotch Whisky to name but a few,” Adrian said. “American whiskey, particularly craft distilling, has had a resurgence over the past decade and we now have, alongside more traditional Kentucky bourbon, whisky from Seattle, rye whiskey from Brooklyn and Texan whiskey. “However, our biggest selling category of whisky is by far Single Malt Scotch. We tend to sell more from the lesser known distilleries, as many customers are looking for something a little bit different. Our best-selling whiskies tend to be big, full flavoured expressions, such as very peaty smoky whiskies, from the Isle of Islay in the Hebrides, as well as rich, sherry cask matured styles from the Highlands.” Is there a particular bottle Alison and Adrian can recommend for this festive season? “Tomatin 14 years old Port Wood Finish,” said Adrian. “This is a great age for whisky in general, however this particular bottling has benefitted from spending a couple of years in ex-tawny port casks. “Tomatin Distillery, situated just south of Inverness, high in the mountains, makes a lighter spirit than you would expect

C

given its location, however this whisky is excellent for extracting flavours from the wood. The complex flavour incorporating the rich port tones has a real ‘Christmassy feel’.” Leeds-based Tailors Gin have an interesting story - they’re mens clothing makers by trade but have branched out into small-batch gin production and have a unique store in the Grand Arcade. By day it’s a men’s tailors, by night it’s a 1920s speakeasy where the star of the show is their very own gin. Owner Jamila Juma-Ware has also seen a big shift towards quality in recent months. “There has definitely been a change in people’s buying habits,” she said. “People are really keen to shop local, and support independent businesses, particularly at the moment. “I think people are really seeing the true value in buying artisan, small batch gins. The craft, and attention to detail in each small batch creation, really pays off in terms of the recipe production and the overall taste, and there is a bigger call for understanding how the gin is made, where, why and who by - the story behind each gin, adds to the overall experience. “There is also a lot of attention into savouring the moments - probably because drinking is typically such a social event, it’s becoming a real ‘special occasion’, so more thought and effort goes into the whole event - from a late afternoon G&T at home, right through to drinks with your social bubble in a bar, people are looking for the wow factor.” Phyll Clark runs The Tasting Note in Bawtry and stocks a

full range of spirits and has seen a change in buying trends since the start of the pandemic. “People are staying at home more and we have found people buying quality rather than quantity,” she said. Gin remains hugely popular and Phyll has seen a thirst for Yorkshire gins with one in particular proving really popular. “Everyone likes a good G&T and our customers love to purchase local gins. One of our latest additions is one from J.P. Adlam which is handcrafted in Yorkshire,” added Phyll. “It pairs really well with a Mediterranean Tonic with lashings of ice and lime and orange slices, Elderflower Tonic with ice and raspberries, or Indian Tonic over ice with a lemon/lime garnish.” J.P. Adlam gin is produced by Doncaster-based Lujo Distilling Company, which was formed a little over three years ago with the sole purpose to produce premium quality small batch spirits. “We have seen success all over the world for the quality of our gin,“ said Jason Adlam. “We even featured in a BBC documentary. The distillery produces a premium London Dry Gin as well as two fruit flavours with a newly launched rum and vodka following suit to complete the family. “Each run is batched in numbers around 100 bottles and hand-bottled, labelled and wax sealed for that truly unique experience.” Despite recent events, Lujo has seen a significant increase in sales as people start to appreciate local produce. Whilst available from local quality independent retailers throughout Yorkshire, you can also buy directly from the distillery. “For us, the small batch craft culture and meaning automatically provides a brand with a point of difference and

“Locality and provenance really do make a difference when people are selecting which bottle to buy online or in shops.” – Thomas Hay-Owens, True North Brew Co

tells a story; a story that speaks more of the passion and curiosity to produce truly beautiful spirits as it does the need to simply sell alcohol,” continued Jason. Another small-batch spirit with a story is Sheffield Vodka, which is produced by True North Brew Co. The Sheffieldbased company are perhaps best known for their chain of pubs and bars throughout South Yorkshire but they also have their own city centre brewery and distillery producing fine ales, dry gin and now, vodka. Company spirit and cocktail expert Thomas Hay-Owens told us about what makes their vodka unique: “Vodka is categorised as an odourless, flavourless spirit. We’ve embraced the traditional process behind vodka, utilising a copper pot still for the distillation due to the fact it can help takeaway the bitter, ‘after burn’ quality of a lot of vodkas. “However, it’s our approach of stepping away from the norm that sets our vodka apart. We distill our British grain spirit base with cracked black pepper, to emulate the subtly spiced, punchy finish of a rye blended vodka. We then also add fresh lemon zest and a touch of honey from The Sheffield Honey company to round out the earthy tones produced by the pepper and to add further smoothness and complexity to the finished article. “The spirit market sometimes runs the risk of being oversaturated, so locality and provenance really do make a difference when people are selecting which bottle to buy online or in shops. Finding that niche that sets the product apart, be it the production method, the ingredients or simply the story behind the spirit is becoming more and more important to the customer. This is absolutely the case when it comes to Sheffield Vodka.” Rum has been one of the stand-out spirits of the year. Last year, almost 35 million bottles were sold, worth a little more than £1billion, according to the Wine and Spirit Trade Association. In fact, one leading newspaper has recently said that rum now ranks alongside gin and whisky among the nation’s favourite spirits. There’s no-one better placed to tell you why the liquor, made by fermenting then distilling sugarcane molasses or sugarcane juice, has become so popular than Adrian Bagnoli, proprietor of Sheffield city centre bar, Cubana. Adrian is a real aficionado when it comes to rum and has searched the world to compile a rum menu offering over 250 varieties. Competing against hundreds of bars and restaurants across the UK, Cubana won the Best Rum Menu 2016 category at the tenth Golden Rum Barrel Awards in London. “Of course we’ve plenty of rums from all around Cuba and Latin America but our vast range extends from as close as Sheffield to as far as India and literally all over the world, all hand-picked for their individual characteristics and historical value,” said Adrian. “If you fancy something incredibly special you could choose from our Rare and Limited section – most of these

The Havana Club 1519, whose ageing process started in the early 1940s, was recently launched in honour of the 500-year-old history of Havana. Only 500 bottles exist in the world with only 250 of these available for sale. Collectors from around the globe are now queuing up to buy them at nearly £3,000 a bottle. Adrian said: “The fact we were allowed to buy the very first two bottles to leave Cuba goes to show how far our status has grown in the rum world in recent years. It was an honour to be have been offered the opportunity to purchase this top quality rare rum at Havana Club HQ and, although not many people will be buying rum at such a hefty pricetag, it ensures we continue to develop our position as one of the country’s leading centres for rum.” It’s yours to try for the princely sum of £250 a shot. Whatever your tipple – whisky, gin, vodka or rum – you’re spoilt for choice this Christmas. Just avoid the supermarket shelves and choose something that little different, something with a story behind. You’re to impress your guests (if you’re allowed them). Cheers!

Leeds’s annual Poppy Run goes virtual The Royal British Legion is encouraging people to lace up their trainers this November to take part in its free to enter Virtual My Poppy Run to help support service and ex-service personnel and their families. The Legion’s Poppy Run events, which usually take place in ten cities across the country, including Leeds are unable to go ahead in their usual format this year due to social distancing measures. Instead, people can show their support for the 2020 Poppy Appeal with the ‘virtual’ version, My Poppy Run. The My Poppy Run participants can choose to run, jog or walk a distance of their choice and get family, friends and pets involved too. Wherever and whenever runners choose to do their Poppy Run, from the treadmill to local park, they will be helping to transform and support the lives of many in our Armed Forces Community, raising vital funds to ensure that those who have served are offered the life changing support they need and deserve. My Poppy Run can be completed any time between the 1 October and 30 November and is free to enter. For more information and to sign up, contact the events team on 0333 011 4500, email events@britishlegion.org.uk or visit visit: https://www.britishlegion.org.uk/ get-involved/things-todo/events/my-poppy-run.

Licensed for weddings The Yorke Arms is delighted to announce that they have been granted a wedding licence to hold civil ceremonies on site. The Yorke Arms is located in Nidderdale, in the Yorkshire Dales, and surrounded by stunning rolling countryside. It is steeped in history, having been a coaching inn for over 100 years. With wedding parties now being limited to only 15 people (as at 24 September), The Yorke Arms provides the perfect venue for a small celebration, with all the finer details being taken care of. In addition to their own wedding licence, The Yorke Arms guests can also get married in the pretty Ramsgill village church, returning by foot to The Yorke Arms for a reception. Leading tile specialist Ceramique Internationale has unveiled an exclusive new collection of smallformat hexagon tiles, responding to the growing ‘lily pad’ tile trend. Stripes is a range of hexagon-shaped décor tiles featuring an intricate pattern of angular lines. Exclusively manufactured in Spain, the contemporary porcelain tile is available in five vibrant shades – including green, pink and dark blue – and can be used in a variety of different fixing patterns to create several distinctive geometric designs. Popular patterns include a starburst, a web of triangles and the sought-after lily pad – which is created when the tiles are assembled with all lines pointing upwards, forming the illusion of a wall full of water lilies. Unlike existing variants of this statement tile, Stripes is smaller at 15x17cm and boasts a unique worn-edge effect reminiscent of encaustic cement tiles – offering an even stronger visual impact. Equally suited to both walls and floors, the dramatic collection offers the durability, easy maintenance and hard-wearing qualities of porcelain, making it the perfect choice for adding a modern splash of colour to kitchen and bathroom environments alike.

Vital lifeline Harewood House Trust was delighted to be among 26 cultural organisations in Leeds to receive part of a £4.4million funding boost as part of the government’s £1.57billion Cultural Recovery Fund. This latest fund was assigned to museums and arts organisations in the area, delivered by Arts Council England and the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS). During the lockdown, Harewood was forced to close its doors to visitors for 14 weeks, a significant portion of its nine-month open season, resulting in an estimated loss of over 80,000 visitors and £1.2million in losses by year end. As an independent charity, Harewood is reliant upon income from visitor admission to continue its important work inspiring creativity and enriching lives for its local Leeds communities and further afield; this loss of revenue having a devastating impact upon the charity’s finances and plans for the future.

CHRISTMAS

Upon a Christmas Wish HAREWOOD’S FESTIVE SEASON IS FILLED WITH WHIMSICAL WONDER. arewood has plenty of pedigree when it comes to its Christmas shows - their show last year won the Museum & Heritage Innovation Award. Now they have released details on this year’s festive programme, which is set to run from Friday 13 November to Sunday 3 January. Harewood will once again transform its house, grounds and gardens into a festive delight which will be themed Upon a Christmas Wish by Lord Whitney. House will reveal its magic to all those in need of whimsical wonder. Created by connoisseurs of make-believe Lord Whitney, the House shares its favourite memory of when a little girl was granted a festive wish to experience a Christmas like never before. Having established a reputation as out-of-the-ordinary, creative and far from predictable, Lord Whitney have created a show which invites you to escape with them into an immersive Christmas story unlike any other. Leeds-based Lord Whitney are an innovative artist-led studio creating immersive experiences, performances and spaces that spark wonder and inspire curiosity. Using skilful storytelling, mindblowing design and a deep understanding of people, they deliver

experiences that challenge perceptions, defy convention, and embrace the strange. Christmas at Harewood has been designed with social distancing in mind, whilst allowing as many people to enjoy Upon a Christmas Wish as possible in a safe manner. Booked time slots and reduced capacity in the House provide a unique opportunity to enjoy the show, immerse yourself in the story and soak up the atmosphere with fewer crowds. Jane Marriott,Trust Director, said: “We are truly delighted and honoured to have received the Innovation of the Year award at the Museums + Heritage Awards, especially at a time when our team is working incredibly hard to ensure that a visit to Harewood can be as magical as ever, despite the current climate.

CHRISTMAS

“Davy and Kristin McGuire created A Night at the Mansion as an imaginative and wholly original adventure through the house. Their creativity and talent reminds us of why we have made the commitment to work with the best artists and creative producers every year. “As a charity, not only charged with taking care of this wonderful place but also sharing it with as many people as possible, the festive season offers a unique opportunity for people to experience Harewood in a different light; something that this award attests to. Harewood strives to make bold and ambitious projects, and every year we want to reimagine what a country house can look like and to provide a chance to

escape daily life, recharge our batteries and be inspired by what we see, feel and hear. Upon a Christmas Wish will do exactly that.” Tickets for Harewood’s 2020 Christmas season are now on sale (Adults £17.50, Children £9, Family (2+2) £46 with online and early bird discounts available, maximum six people per booking in line with the government’s ‘Rule of Six’), with prebooking essential and current restrictions necessitating visitors booking a time slot to enter the House. In addition, Father Christmas will return to welcome families for exclusive out-of-hours access to the house, to ensure a safe environment can be

provided with all the necessary precautions in place, whilst still creating a magical experience. Likewise, a tailormade programme of pre-bookable festive workshops are back, as well as festive afternoon teas and the opportunity to visit after dark in Harewood Lates. Commenting on the launch, Marcello Distefano, managing director, San Carlo Restaurants said: “With large gatherings of people likely to be restricted for the foreseeable future we’re all having to rethink how we thank and celebrate with our colleagues this Christmas. “This comes during what has already been a very stressful year for so many. Sending a gift box is a simple way to deliver a message of thanks wherever needed, people can choose to celebrate as and how they wish at a time that’s best for them.” San Carlo Restaurants is an award-winning, independent, Italian family-owned group of contemporary Italian restaurants, with 21 venues across the UK, including the two in Leeds. As a company they invested heavily in making their restaurants Covid-safe, not just for their customers but for staff too. “One thing I’ve learned through all this is, worry about the stuff you can control, don’t worry about the stuff you can’t control,” said Marcello. “We’re all nervous about Christmas because it’s a big time of year for us and parties play a big part in business. “We thought the gift boxes were a nice idea and still allows people to go out and enjoy themselves over the Christmas period.” Gift boxes are from £40 and are available to pre-order now. WHAT TO DO NOW WINTER’S HERE. BY NIGEL EATON, HEAD OF RHS GARDEN HARLOW CARR SHOP & PLANT CENTRE. 1. With our changing climate patterns, and more rainfall over winter, it’s a good idea to raise pots and containers off the floor to allow better drainage over the colder months. Always use three pot feet or bricks under your pots so that if the ground is uneven the pot feet will keep your pots stable. 2. Now is the time to cut back old and marked leaves on Hellebores. Not only does it remove any over-wintering pests and diseases, but it also reveals the new emerging flowers. 3. Wildlife is an important ally in your garden and encouraging birds and other small creatures to visit will help keep pests such as slugs and aphids in check. Put up roosting pouches in hedges and sheltered parts of your garden. 4. Also clean bird feeders with a safe cleaner and then keep filled over the colder winter months. High calorific foods such as sunflower hearts and peanuts are best for winter-feeding. If you have the proper feeder type, Goldfinches like Niger seed and look for feeders with this type of seeds as a preference. 5. Gardening gifts are now in plentiful supply in gardening outlets. One tip I have learnt over a long career is to buy hand tools and secateurs in any colour but green. The green handled tools I have lost in my garden, in the compost bin or lying in the borders, must come to hundreds of pounds. Buy red , yellow or even pink-handled hand tools that will stand out. 6. Help yourself to a head-start in the spring by sowing sweet peas and broad beans now and planting out in mild spells to get an early June crop of flowers or beans. This hardens up the plants to produce more for you next summer. 7. As the herbaceous border starts to die back, remove the dying stems and foliage of summer flowering plants to lessen the risk of pest and diseases over wintering on the dying foliage. If you live in an area that allows bonfires this debris can be burnt and the ash stored in a corner of the garden for a year, to be used as a high potash feed next autumn. Grasses and autumn flowering plants should be left to go to seed to feed wildlife and give some height over the winter in the borders. 8. If you are buying houseplants for Christmas presents please bear in mind the home conditions the plants are going into. Warm rooms suit plants like moth orchids, poinsettias and Christmas cacti. Cool rooms suit the more traditional Christmas plants, such as azaleas, potted bulbs and cyclamen. 9. On the same note, remember to acclimatise your potted Christmas tree, if you buy a rooted tree, when you bring it into the house and when you take it out after the Christmas season. If it’s frosty outside leave it out till it is a milder day before bringing it in, and above all please put your tree out on a mild day when the season is over if possible. Coming from a heated house to -5 would shock anyone! 10. Finally remember to sit and plan for next year over the Christmas season. There are some lovely new gardening books out this year to inspire. Gardening is all about what is happening now and what is coming up in the next year.
