Leeds Grand Theatre between 23-27 November. The story unfolds when the descendants of Mr. West gather in his now deserted mansion, on the Bodmin Moor, for the reading of his will. Passing 20 years ago, he had planned twisted requirements for the inheritance of his vast wealth and family jewels. The solicitor declares who will be the heir,
causing tension and resulting in a spiral of macabre events of jealousy and revenge. Housed in a residence whose closest neighbour is an asylum responsible for the escape of the criminally insane. During the reading, the superstitious housekeeper declares that someone will be dead by midnight, leaving the audience guessing who throughout the whole performance.

Starring in the production is Bond-girl legend Britt Ekland and Tracy Shaw, synonymous for her role in Coronation Street as Maxine Peacock. We caught up with the stars to find out more about their experience performing in the Cat and the Canary. The show sounds fantastic, who are you playing?
Britt: I play the housekeeper. She has been in this house alone for 20 years before this midnight meeting. She’s probably had quite a solitary life and had to find ways of surviving that solitude, the cold and the war. She hasn’t had any physical company, but she feels she has had spiritual company. She’s very stern. Her job is to guard this house until the heir takes it over and that’s what she’s done for 20 years. Tracy: My character is Annabelle West. She’s a successful writer who fled this country a few years ago to get away but has come back to her family. She also spent some time with her grandfather years and years ago in this house. The psychological complexity of this piece really is quite huge, especially for my character. What hooked you about the project
Britt Ekland as Mrs Pleasant
and made you want to be part of it?
Britt: First, I’m always up for a challenge. I always have been. I have done almost everything you can think of in my career. This is definitely not a role I’m used to; this play is not a farce, for a start! It’s something a bit more challenging for me. Tracy: I don’t think I’ve ever had the chance to work on a piece before that we’re updating because of the reality of how we watch theatre and TV now. To do that work tastefully to a play written in the 1920s is quite difficult, I think. And to not just produce your average whodunnit. We want people to come and watch and be enthralled. As an actor, with this job, I feel like the cat that got the cream. The show has an impressive cast too. What are they like to work with?
Tracy: The actors I’m working with are so talented. Britt Ekland is our “housekeeper”! She’s just marvellous. I grew up listening to Marti Webb’s most fantastic voice. Ben Nealon from Soldier Soldier is brilliant, and so is Gary Webster from Minder. It’s an absolute honour to be working on such a stimulating project with lovely actors that I really admire.
What makes this such a challenge for you?
Britt: I haven’t been on stage since my last panto in 2013. And I was never a rep actor – I was a movie star. Although I wanted to be on stage, being a movie star didn’t hold the prestige of being a good stage actor – not in Sweden where I came from. I don’t have the background that most actors my age have, which is my main challenge on this tour. People might think that because you’re a well-known TV face you just get offered roles. Is that not the case and how hard is it to keep putting yourself through auditions?
Tracy: It’s tough, and there are times when I think “Maybe my time’s up.” But I absolutely should be sitting there with another hundred people that look similar to me. It keeps me really grounded and I never take anything for granted. There are a lot of knocks, but you occasionally get a job that’s as stimulating as this one. I’m really grateful. The Cat andThe Canary will perform at Leeds GrandTheatre between 23-27 November. Visit https://leedsheritagetheatres.com for tickets and more information, or call 0113 243 0808.

WHAT’S GOING ON LEEDS?
SUITABLY RESTED, JORDAN ODU HAS AUTUMN/WINTER IN HIS SIGHTS.
resh back from a much-needed vacation in Ibiza, I’m more than ready to take on the forthcoming season of goodwill and chaos. There’s a lot to be said for a leisurely few days grazing on cocktails by the pool at Pikes and catching up with friends at the beach in autumn. I might just make this an annual thing. I was a little bit gutted to hear that the large majority of this year’s Bonfire Night plans had been scrapped, however, my go-to local The Mustard Pot will be celebrating so that’s where I’ll be.They never fail to deliver on the pie and peas front, and also do a mean Winter Pimms, which is guaranteed to warm me up as I take in their annual firework display and Bottomless brunch bonfire. at Head of Steam Hard to believe, but Briggate’s legendary Harvey Nichols turns 25 this month and will be hosting a variety of suitably fashionable events to mark the occasion. I can still remember being 13 and wanting nothing more than one of their iconic white shopping bags, so I could strut my stuff around town feeling all Boujee. If only my tastes were as modest today, my bank balance would be thanking me right now. Speaking of the finer things, Grantley Hall just launched Apres at The Orchard. Located on the grounds within their perfectly manicured lawns, this jawdropping outdoor venue is the perfect place to escape the cold and snuggle up in their magical alpine destination, where indulgent winter cocktails, boozy hot chocolates and delicious seasonal dishes await. already excited to try the Roast Spiced Sea Bream, whilst the Grantley Spring Punch which mixes framboise, fraise and lemon juice with vodka and Champers sounds dreamy. It’s definitely one of Yorkshire’s finest venues in my humble opinion. If you’re after somewhere new to try in Leeds, I can’t recommend OBA Leeds on Wade Lane enough. An ingenious fusion of Korean and Japanese cuisine, tempting options range from Classic Nobu Style Black Cod Miso, Flambe Scallops in a creamy garlic and brandy sauce and Ginger Pork Belly. Seriously, just go and thank me later. Just when you thought you’d tried every bottomless brunch Leeds had to offer, Head of Steam on Park Row has jumped in the game with something to please everyone. Dishes range from a hearty Full English (with vegan option) to American Pancakes and the Piggyback Burger for those with larger appetites. Personally, I love the Belgian Waffles, which come smothered with Belgian Duvel flavoured syrup and topped with fried chicken. Drinks are varied too, with craft beer flights, Prosecco, Aperol Spritz and Bloody Marys all on tap for 90 minutes. What’s not to love? And finally, I can’t leave without mentioning Roxy Lanes, which is destined for further greatness in its allnew Leeds venue. Formerly Red Hot Buffet, I’m sure you’ll agree that this new venue is better suited to the city’s number one bowling alley, perched in The Light in the very heart of the city. Watch this space for the full lowdown as I’ll be getting a sneak peek in the not too distant future. That’s it for now, so have a great Halloween and I’ll see you soon.

iving up a 30-year-plus career in “Life is better when things are the fire and safety industry was beautiful,” said Ian. “For us, this comes not a decision that Ian down to craft. Everything we make and Thompson made lightly but was one that do, from our choice of botanicals to our he needed to make if he was to fulfil his classical methods, is led by our artisanal dream of creating his own gin. Even eye, our close attention to detail, and this old chestnut, If something’s worth doing, before that decision was made, Ian, a self-confessed gin lover, would often be it’s worth doing right.” The base spirit on which gin is made, found surrounded by botanicals in his cellar, experimenting and recreating his has been a curiosity for many favourite spirits. enthusiasts. The gin in your hand at the He accelerated his interest by weekend is most likely to be made using completing a distilling course at Brewlab in Sunderland and, The Thompson Family with the support of his twin sons, eventually made the giant step from cellar to distillery by setting up Sing Gin in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales in 2016. This premium small batch gin takes inspiration from its stunning, earthy surroundings. But this is a gin with a difference. In fact, it remains the only gin in Yorkshire to be made using grapes rather than grain.

a variety of grain such as corn, barley or wheat, unless of course you are already a Sing Gin convert. Gin has been made with grain since, experts believe, a shift in ingredients in the mid-16th century in the Netherlands. Before this, the juniper berry spirit was created using grape – a method brought back to life by Sing Gin, who embrace tradition in sourcing the finest Spanish grapes to create their tipple. Rather than simply adding flavour to a neutral base, like gin curators today, they go the extra mile to use the diverse grapes to ensure the flavour is there from the get go. They work closely with vineyards in Castilla-La Mancha, Spain. The Thompson family sought out a company that would reflect their own; family-run and passionate about quality of product. “Importantly, we wanted to find the right partner who could spend time with us perfecting the grape alcohol,” explained Ian. “We spent 12

months going back and forth using different parts of the grape, from the wine lees to the pomace, and then concluding on the grape itself. Thankfully, they were willing to spend time with us to get the grape base perfect!” Sing Gin is embracing tradition by using original 14th century methods of creating a grape-based spirit, reminiscent of the medicinal liquor made by monks and alchemists across Europe; history is integral to the creation of this premium gin. “Grapes are great, there is a lot of room for experimentation with new product development as not only can you use different parts of the grape to produce alcohol, but you can use the grape to impart flavour on the gin,” added Ian. The Spanish grapes used ensure the gin has fruity notes and a silky-smooth texture, giving Sing Gin a unique and sought-after taste. It is not only the grape that gives the flavour, it also contains a blend of seven natural botanicals, including juniper, mint, orange peel and flax (a crop that the Thompson family grow themselves). The botanicals are all crushed by hand using a large mortar and pestle, ensuring only the essential oils are extracted to create the signature freshness and floral undertones of Sing Gin. They are then left overnight to steep in a steel and copper still called Bella, named after the family’s first dog. Both the grape spirit and botanicals are distilled in 150-litre batches as this small, family-run business likes to ensure quality control... “If something’s worth doing, it’s worth doing right!” said Ian. Sing Gin is synonymous with family, tradition and nature. Even their branding is inspired by the county, with a nod to the stunning water gardens at Fountains Abbey which is a firm favourite of The Thompson family. “From still to sip, every drop of Sing Gin reflects our belief in the life-affirming power of natural beauty,” beamed Ian. “The natural beauty of Yorkshire in particular. We, the founders, live in Kettlesing village deep in the
Yorkshire Dales. This ‘area of outstanding natural beauty’ inspired our gin’s elegantly uplifting character and our Sing name. The dream was to create a family legacy to celebrate my beloved Yorkshire that could also pass down the generations. My twin sons James and Richard are on-board and my wife and the boys’ mum, Caron, enjoys the tasting sessions.” Each family member has shown dedication, hard work and passion in helping to create Sing Gin, traits that clearly run in the Thompson family. James was a highly-skilled tree surgeon who volunteered as part of Mountain Rescue England and Wales; his twin Richard has been a keen swimmer throughout his life and in 2013 was selected to swim for England in the RLSS Commonwealth. He also achieved a MA in business management. Ian, however, was undoubtedly the driving force of Sing Gin – as well as crafting a big flavoured gin, he wanted to create a family legacy. The success of working together, then, should have come as no surprise – it was the Thompson hat-trick! Ian and his twin-sons spent two years developing and perfecting Sing Gin prior to the brand’s first product launch in May 2018. Since then, James has been responsible for production and Richard for marketing and sales, with Ian remaining at the heart and soul of company. “As a family business, family means everything.” As with every aspect of the Sing Gin brand, the 90+ stockists are hand-picked – often familyowned and independent. Although a Yorkshire based company, people can purchase Sing Gin as far north as Aberdeenshire and far south as Milford on Sea. The easy-to-use postcode search on their website will tell you where you can find your nearest bottle. With online purchases available through their own website, people can also order Sing Gin from the comfort of their own home anywhere in the UK! Visit www.singgin.com to find out more. The spirit of Christmas FROM PREMIUM BOTTLES TO EVERYDAY TIPPLES, EMBRACE THE FESTIVE SEASON WITH THIS CLASSY SELECTION. BY MARTIN EDWARDS. here are time-honoured traditions that have to be observed at Christmas. The ritual is enshrined in The five commandments we all know so well. 1. Thou shalt attend the office Christmas party 2. Thou shalt beg forgiveness the next morning, and thy thoughts will be cringeworthy (“Did I really kiss a man on the forehead?”) 3. Thou shalt order a multitude of kitchen gadgets from Lakeland and place them in gift boxes. Thence they will be banished to an unknown cupboard for all time 4. Thou shalt not refuse a fourth helping of sprouts and turkey, be thou ever so full 5. Thou shalt drink spirits. It’s the last one that is interesting. Why on earth should most people drink strong liqueurs at Christmas, and at no other time in their lives? It’s certainly not enshrined in the scripts – for instance, who could imagine the three wise men bringing a bottle of Bells along rather than exotic gifts (definitely not obtained from Lakeland)? But there’s little doubt that this national oddity happens every year. At one end of the scale, there is the torrent of Baileys and Malibu that always get the mad aunts kicking over the traces at Yuletide. At the other, there are rare, refined and expensive malt whiskies and cognacs that are the province of the connoisseur. In between, there is a selection of tipples varying from the fine and sought after to the downright eccentric. Here are a few to get you in the mood.

DRINKS
Otterbeck Distillery Cotton Garden Gin - £37.95 Contains a broad range of warming botanicals including juniper, cassia, cardamom, yarrow, elderberry and coriander leaf. Reminiscent of an autumnal English garden, this is an aromatic gin with an earthy backbone.
J.P. Adlam No. 8 - £38 Lashings of juniper infused with coriander, Seville oranges and a hint of star anise make this gin truly unique. The original J.P. Adlam Gin can be enjoyed with any flavour of tonic and garnish and is a gin to match your inquisitive nature and search for quality.
Frapin Cigar Blend XO Coganc 100% Grande Champagne Premier Cru De Coganc £110 This is more accurately an eau-de-vie than Cognac. Quite what the fruit adds (apart from taking up bottle space) is not explained in the accompanying information. It does however promise “the scent of wooden cigar boxes, typical of a Grande Champagne cognac”.
O’Donnell Sticky Toffee Moonshine £25 Made by passing through slowly melted sugar, this is one for the really sweet tooth.
Deadhead Monkey Chocolate Rum – £66.50 Who wouldn’t be thrilled to have this charming little chap on display on their sitting room? The contents are a mixture of six-year cask-aged rum with roasted cacao beans. Just the thing to brighten up your Christmas morning.
Spirit of Yorkshire Cream Liqueur £25 A bit like Baileys. Only dearer.
Beluga Celebration Vodka £39.50 Beluga Celebration is a Limited Edition release dedicated to the 115th anniversary of the Marinsk Distillery. The water used in its manufacture is apparently solely from 300m deep wells within Siberia. So it must make a difference.
Laphroaig Ian Hunter Chapter 3 – £975 This 33-year-old Laphroaig Single Malt is the third in the exclusive series commemorating Ian Hunter. A vintage 1987 distillation, fully matured in refill ex-Bourbon barrels, heralding waves of aniseed, peaty and peppery notes, cedar, kumquat zest and gorse flower.
Blantons Original Bourbon - £70 Blanton’s Original Single Barrel was once designated for ambassadors, dignitaries, and Colonel Blanton’s family and friends. Now it’s yours – for a price.

The Dog Lounge
A real treat RICHARD ABBEY IS SPOILT WITH A VISIT TO THE DEVONSHIRE ARMS HOTEL & SPA. or most, The Devonshire Arms Hotel & Spa is a special occasion venue, somewhere to completely relax and indulge yourself and your loved ones. Situated at the southern edge of the Yorkshire Dales, it is situated in the most stunning of locations next to the River Wharfe and Bolton Abbey. Built in the 17th century, it came under the ownership of the Duke of Devonshire in 1753 and remains so to this day, forming part of the Devonshire Hotels Group, which also includes the nearby Devonshire Fell as well as properties surrounding the Chatsworth estate in Derbyshire. Over the years it’s been visited by artists and poets (Turner and Wordsworth) as well as royalty, who used the estate for grouse shoots in the 19th

Autumn was really taking hold as we arrived on a bright but breezy evening and the roaring fire that greeted us in the reception was most welcome. With reservations for the Burlington restaurant already made, we were shown through to the Dog Lounge for a pre-dinner drink and to peruse the evening’s menu. As you’ve probably guessed, the Dog Lounge is so named because of its décor - think striking dog-themed wallpaper, oil paintings and statuettes as well as an open fire. The Devonshire is a dogfriendly hotel and you’re welcome to bring your four-legged friends along if you so wish. The three-AA Rosette Burlington is the Devonshire’s fine dining restaurant and is headed up by Peter Howarth, who returned in November 2019 after previously working there during his early career. Peter’s previous experience reads like a who’s who of top regional restaurants. He was head chef at The Samling in the Lake District and head chef at Gidleigh Park and The Latymer. He has also worked at Winteringham Fields and Longueville Manor, Jersey. Peter describes his cooking as ‘modern British with world influences’ and this was certainly evident in the tasting menu (£77.50pp) that was on offer on the evening of our visit. After starting with canapés, which included beetroot macaroons, and the most delicious 36-hour-prooved sourdough bread, we tucked into our first course. The Burlington had a choice of two dishes to begin; goats cheese or salmon. My wife opted for the former, which was whipped and served with artichoke and pear, whilst I chose the
beetroot cured salmon, pumpernickel and horseradish. Both dishes were beautifully presented and a wonderful start to the meal. The horseradish ice cream that accompanied my salmon dish was oh-so subtle and just exquisite. A salt aged venison tartare, served with caper jam and Leeds Blue cheese, followed before we chose our ‘main course’. My BBQ mallard, red cabbage, Chanterelles, parsnip and truffle was my stand-out dish of the evening, markedly seasonal and just delicious. The earthiness of the mushrooms and truffle complemented the richness of the duck and sweetness of the barbecue sauce beautifully. Across the table, the pan-fried halibut, celeriac, cockles and Champagne was equally impressive. A pre-dessert of ‘Toast and Honey’ lived up to its intriguing name and translated as sourdough ice cream served with caramelised honey. It was a classic combination with a twist. Peter’s expertise with ice creams was further evident with our desserts – the Tonka bean version that accompanied my custard tart, fig and orange was simply sublime, expertly balancing out the different flavours to create a light but hugely rewarding dish.
My wife was equally enthused with the crème fraiche ice cream that accompanied her dark chocolate delice, which, with the addition of coffee flavours, was perfectly balanced too. The tasting menu at the Burlington restaurant comes with an optional wine flight (£60pp) as well as supplementary cheeseboard (£12.50pp). As we were driving we had to forego the wine option, settling for a choice glass (or two, in the case of my wife), but we did choose to share the cheese. One serving was more than enough for the two of us and included five artisan cheeses from Andy Swinscoe at The Courtyard Dairy in Settle. We tried the Kileen, a gouda-style cheese from Galway in Ireland; Baron Bigod, a Suffolk brie; Dale End Cheddar from Whitby; Old Roan, an unpasteurised cow’s milk from Aygarth, Wensleydale; and Leeds Blue, a gorgonzola-style cheese from Adel near Leeds. We retired to the Dog Lounge for coffee and petit fours (£4.75pp) and reflected on our culinary experience, which was nothing short of faultless. The food, the service were all impeccable. As treats go, it will take some beating. The Devonshire Arms Hotel & Spa Bolton Bridge, Skipton, BD23 6AJ Tel: 01756 718100 devonshirehotels.co.uk

Friendly and inviting BILLED AS A ‘PROPER YORKSHIRE PUB’, DOES THE WILD SWAN IN MINSKIP LIVE UP TO EXPECTATIONS? WE SENT RICHARD ABBEY TO FIND OUT.
here’s an old saying that you should only eat shellfish during months that contain the letter ‘R’. The reasoning goes that shellfish spawn in the summer months so will reach their peak between September and April. It was a theory we unknowingly put to the test on a recent visit to The Wild Swan in Minskip, a charming village just a stone’s throw from junction 48 of the A1. The pub dates back to 1832 and is billed as a ‘proper Yorkshire pub’ serving great beers, local ales and, on the evidence of our visit, quality food too. The community venue is recently under new ownership and was taken
T

over in the summer by three friends who all grew up within half an hour of Minskip. The trio appointed Emma Butterill as manager and any changes have been subtle so far but there are bigger ones planned in the new year, including a remodelled interior. The pub also has planning permission for its outbuildings to be converted into letting rooms too. It was Emma who spoke to us about the ‘R Rule’ and there was definite grounding in this theory as the moules marinere (£8) my wife ordered to start were some of the plumpest, juiciest we’ve ever tasted. And there was plenty of them too - more than enough for me

to take advantage of after finishing my delicate starter of wood pigeon breast served with black pudding purée, baby beetroot and pickled blackberry (£8). The Wild Swan is a charming location. It’s pale yellow exterior feels just right and the smattering of fairy lights outside the aged building give it an inviting feel. Enter through the main door and you’ll find the bar to the left and the restaurant to the right. Taking the latter option we were greeted by Emma and, given the choice of tables, chose to sit by the window. We were early diners, arriving at 6pm on a Saturday, but the restaurant quickly filled up and was buzzing by the time we left. The new management team have retained much of the kitchen brigade and Frazer, Danny, Michael and Sammy could all be seen working feverishly on the other side of the pass. The Wild Swan operate a bar menu during the daytime, switching to an a la carte offering in the evenings. We’d brought our two young children with us and although there is no kids menu as such, smaller portions of the dishes on the menu could be ordered at a reduced cost. They also have a Sunday lunch menu and are currently taking bookings for Christmas. After ordering drinks – a Black Sheep
beer for me, a G&T for my wife – we perused the menu, which including delicious-sounding dishes including buratta salad, fish and chips, cauliflower steak and fillet steak. The Wild Swan have a catch of the day - on this occasion salmon or hake (£17/19) - and a pie of the day, on this occasion chicken, ham hock and leek. Prior to our aforementioned starters arriving, we tucked into an appetiser of freshly-made garlic focaccia bread and salted butter. Soft, doughy and with a slightly crisp top, it was the perfect way to start. For mains my wife chose the special of the day, which on this occasion was lamb rump served with a lamb fritter, edamame beans and a red wine jus (£18). Served pink, the lamb was incredibly tender and given extra depth of flavour from the fritter whilst the Japanese beans, mixed in with roasted new potatoes, added a different texture and taste. I went down the seafood route, ordering the frutti di mare risotto (£16), which contained prawns and samphire and was topped with a crispy sea bass fillet. Heavy on the garlic taste, it was cooked just right with the parmesan giving it extra indulgence. Hints of lemon prevented it being too heavy and
the prawns were deliciously plump too (well, it was October). My children ordered smaller versions of the burger but they were anything but. Served on a brioche bun with melted cheese, the thick beef patties were full of flavour and well complemented by good, salty fries. Desserts were a bit of a stretch so we decided to share two between the four of us, not that my wife and I got much of a look-in. White chocolate cheesecake, served with berry coulis, summer berries and a white chocolate shard (£7), was light and not too sweet whilst the sticky toffee pudding (£7) was the complete opposite – just as it should be. Rich and indulgent, it was the perfect autumn treat. Although we declined, The Wild Swan has a range of after-dinner digestivs and cocktails as well as a selection of teas and coffees. You wouldn’t have thought that the team had only been in charge for a matter of months, service was excellent throughout and the food consistently of a high standard. With changes planned in the new year, this is an exciting time for The Wild Swan and it will be interesting to see what materialises in the coming months. For now, you can happily make do with a proper Yorkshire pub that will exceed your expectations. The Wild Swan Main Street, Minskip, York, YO51 9JF Tel: 01423 326334 https://wildswan.pub

that measuring and fitting shoes cannot be rushed – as everyone’s feet are different; there is no such thing as a standard size or fit when it comes to footwear. It’s rare that our feet stay the same size. As we get older our feet change, often becoming longer, flatter, deeper and wider and we start to need different sorts of shoes to keep our feet comfortable. It’s so important to look after our feet and wear shoes that fit correctly in order to keep ourselves moving. Walking is extremely good for our mental health and wellbeing – it’s on our doorstep and it’s free! Whatever the weather we must try to get out and about. In addition to an amazing choice of footwear, fitright footwear stock a range of shoe accessories such as insoles and protective sprays and creams and soft top socks, and we are also stockists of the Healthy Back Bag, a bag that is ergonomically designed to fit in to the natural curve of your spine and take pressure off the neck, shoulders and back. acial acupuncture is the new alternative to dermal fillers. You’re probably asking, ‘is it?’ Well, yes it is! Facial acupuncture is truly becoming one of the most wanted facial treatments by women and men of all ages. If you don’t like the idea of fillers being injected in your face or find it too expensive, facial acupuncture is definitely for you. Mar De La Cruz encourages facial
F
acupuncture instead of dermal fillers. She says: “It’s important to understand that facial acupuncture and fillers work in opposite ways. Fillers freeze the muscles around the injection site, which does relax the area and the skin around it resulting in fewer wrinkles and creasing. It also limits the flow of lymph, blood, and chi to that area. Facial acupuncture works by restoring the flow of chi to the tissues.” To book your treatment go to www.freedomcareclinics.com

Your mind can make you ill but also can make you healthy. You have to decide which path you want to take. It’s important to make time and hit the reset button. The best way to regain the power is to switch off your mind and focus on what you have instead of what you don’t have. Go for a walk, attend a Pilates class or simply have a relaxing bath. GET YOUR GARDEN READY FOR WINTER. BY NIGEL EATON, HEAD OF RHS GARDEN HARLOW CARR SHOP & PLANT CENTRE. 1. Wisteria side-shoots can be cut back this month to encourage more flowers in the spring, cut back to about 4” from the main stems. Use cross blade clematis so the cuts are clean. 2. Now is also the time to hard prune late flowering clematis such as the Viticella varieties, these can be pruned to about 12” from the ground to encourage strong shoots in March. Top dress with a balanced fertiliser such as Toprose, which is high in potash. 3. Winter flowering cyclamen need dead heading and yellowing foliage removed to prolong flowering. This should give you a good three weeks extra flowering. 4. Look out for potted bulbs that you can plant in your garden to fill any gaps you forgot to plant in autumn. 5. December is a windy month, make sure everything is securely staked or tied to supports that need it. Use a flexible tie to secure things so it does not cut into the stems. 6. Do not be tempted to prune back ornamental grasses, as these are often havens for overwintering beneficial insects, in the hollow stems. 7. Any bare root roses or fruit can be planted in mild weather, make sure you spread the roots and carefully back fill with soil and compost with an addition of Rootgrow to get the roots established. 8. Christmas houseplants make ideal gifts, but please do some research as to where your gift is going to be grown in the recipient’s house. Buy warm growing plants for relatives that have the heating up full and buy potted indoor bulbs and azaleas and cyclamen for cooler rooms. 9. In January, summer flowering bulbs will be arriving at your garden centre, so start planning your displays now. Look for the new varieties to give you something fresh and store cool but frost free when you get them home until it is time to plant 10. Feed the birds and keep birdbaths defrosted, feed with a high fat content feed such as peanuts, sunflower hearts or fatcakes.

Steven Turner, Head of King’s Magna, the middle school of QE’s unique four-school model
Fostering curiosity QUEEN ETHELBURGA’S COLLEGIATE’S INNOVATIVE CURRICULUM SUPPORTS THE TRANSITION FROM PRIMARY TO SENIOR EDUCATION. Year 6 curriculum focused on delivering skills that are important for future success, with no formal SAT testing, fosters curiosity for the important journey into Key Stage 3 and beyond, says Head of King’s Magna Middle School at Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate (QE), Steven Turner. At QE, their mission is for all members of their community to aspire to the Hill Standard ‘To be the best that I can with the gifts that I have’. Steven Turner, Head of King’s Magna, the middle school of QE’s unique fourschool model, says: “We harness this individuality through an innovative curriculum. This is a curriculum which supports the transition between the Collegiate’s primary education at Chapter House, our Preparatory school, and the demands of GCSEs and beyond in our two senior schools.” In a difference from the traditional school model where children stay in primary education until the end of Year

6, QE students join King’s Magna in Year 6, and stay with them until Year 9.They find many students are ready for a new challenge at the end of Year 5, so they made it a focus to develop a unique curriculum for this transitional year, with content designed in partnership between secondary school subject specialists and highly experienced primary age teachers. Importantly, they have made a crucial decision not to assess their Year 6 students using SATS testing. Students are instead assessed formally at three points during the year using standardised and moderated ‘common evaluation tasks’ these are used to track progress and
identify what each student can do and what they could do to improve further. This decision allows them to focus on delivering those skills that the students need to be successful in Key Stage 3 and beyond. Their all-encompassing, holistic approach to developing the whole student, which is at the heart of everything they do, creates a supportive, vibrant and caring school environment throughout King’s Magna. They are committed to equipping students with the skills and knowledge they need to move seamlessly to QE College or Faculty at the end of Year 9, growing and maturing into their teenage years with confidence. To find out more about this innovative curriculum visit qe.org for more information, where you can book on their next Open Day on 27 November.
