WHAT’S GOING ON LEEDS? Ten Bar Underground

JORDAN ODU’S ROLLERCOASTER RIDE OF FOOD, FUN AND ICONIC BRANDS.

s we prepare to kiss goodbye to summer and welcome in the autumn months, it’s great to see the students return to help breathe some life into the city. Freshers week may have been quite different in 2020, but with the likes of Voodoo Events switching up the game to suit these strange times, there’s still plenty of fun to be had. Their temporary takeover of Space Nightclub with Ten Bar Underground has gone down a storm and a textbook example of socially distanced partying done right. Across the city over on Wellington Street, there’s another new

kid on the block set to take Leeds by storm. Rebound Social has taken over the old Buca Di Pizza venue to create an edgy new bar complete with eye-popping graffiti that’s ready for the ‘Gram. As well as serving up fresh pizza, panninis and 2-

4-1 cocktails until 9pm daily, they are also hosting weekday after-work socials and live music Sundays. A hotspot to watch in the coming months. Last month also saw team Pink Gorilla stage our first post-lockdown event before the rule of six kicked in, we helped Charlton Morris throw their socially distanced awards ceremony in their amazing new Boar Lane offices. It was great to be back in the saddle and the atmosphere was buzzing. Food-wise, I’ve certainly not let the end of the official Eat Out to Help Out scheme stop me from working my way around the city’s best restaurants, starting with Shears Yard. This hidden gem has become a city favourite with its everevolving range of inspired tasting menus and it’s easy to see why. From the blow torched king scallop with carpaccio of confit pork belly to the dry-aged sirloin beef with jalapeno, corn, and tomato, all six dishes were pitch-perfect and beautifully presented. If you’ve not been, get them added to your foodie bucket list. A regular haunt for me has always been the Harvey Nichols Brasserie and their latest menu is guaranteed to get your tastebuds tingling. The roasted rump of lamb with a smoked paprika crumb and red pepper coulis is a revelation, whilst the dark chocolate olive oil tart with spiced poached pear and vanilla mascarpone is to die for. Another place I’m rarely away from right now is Whitehall and boy did their Sunday roast deliver. Their Masons Gin salmon with goat’s cheese mousse and orange and pink peppercorn dressing is top-shelf stuff, and the roast chicken is up there with the best. The Beehive, Lamb & Flag and Heaney & Mill are all next on my Sunday dinner hitlist, so

watch this space for feedback. If there’s one place I’d never thought I’d see in 2020, it’s Flamingo Land. I haven’t been since I was a kid, but I had an awesome family day out with my friends children. It was nice to see families out again and the Kumali rollercoaster was really fun. This month also saw Pink Gorilla celebrating an incredible signing that we can’t wait to get our teeth into. We’ve just begun working with the iconic drink’s brands Guinness and Johnny Walker, and we have some exciting activations planned at various venues, including Elland Road. Keep your eyes peeled for updates. Finally, speaking of Elland Road and Leeds United, I just want to say a big congratulations to the whites for their stunning premiership debut in their first few games. Until next time, stay safe, wear a mask and I’ll be back next month with the latest news and events.

SCIENCE

Capture science in all its glory NORTH STAR ARE BRINGING COMMUNITIES TOGETHER THROUGH SCIENCE. TAKE PART – BE A STAR AND SUBMIT A PHOTOGRAPH TO AN INTERACTIVE GALAXY. cience is everywhere – from the moment the sun rises, right through to the stars in the night sky. It inspires, helps save lives, challenges us and educates. This is why it’s important we celebrate science itself and the brilliant minds behind it whenever we can. North Star: a People’s Picture is doing just that. Working in partnership with some fantastic organisations and schools in Rotherham, the interactive artwork aims to bring people together to celebrate a love of science and the great minds who have charted a course through innovation in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths. The artwork is being created by The People’s Picture, a photography and design studio. Every piece of artwork they create is made up of thousands of images, with every piece telling its own story – North Star is no different. Every image submitted has space for a caption to tell the world about what their photograph means to them. And although the images need to represent science, that doesn’t just mean space, planets and rockets. Science really is all around us, from the kettle in your kitchen and your mobile phone, right through to growing vegetables, rock formations and even buildings!

S

20 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

So far, the project has had a host of wonderful images, including a homemade rocket backpack, beautiful drawings of planets, and photos of inventions that have changed lives. Helen Marshall, artistic director CEO of The People’s Picture said: “I’m proud to have been invited as an artist to explore the stories and pictures from the community. I’m excited to harness the technology at the intersection between science and art – bringing together the wonderful pictures and stories to make one beautiful piece of artwork to celebrate STEAM and its impact of the community.” Kris Mackay, Programme Manager for Well Rotherham added: “All of us involved in this project believe that inspired communities can chart their own path to health, wealth and happiness. We know that our communities are full of inspirational stories and we’re excited to be able to share them in such a unique way.” To take part, visit www.northstarscienceschool.co.uk and upload your favourite photograph that represents how science has inspired you. Add a photo caption so the team know a bit more about the image – then watch it be added to their galaxy! You’ll also be able to look through the other photographs that have been submitted.

SCIENCE

What’s the history behind The North Star? The art project is running ahead of the North Star, a Science Summer School Event, which will be a week-long event from 1 December. The event is part of Professor Brian Cox’s Science Summer School which was started in partnership with Lord Andrew Mawson and has been running for eight years. It mixes the best of the STEAM subjects – Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths – through seminars, discussions and hands-on experiments. Last summer, the North Star partnership, led by Well Rotherham and including Rotherham and Sheffield Councils, Harworth Group, the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre, UK Atomic Energy Authority, Rolls-Royce and Gulliver's Valley, were lucky enough to support 23 young people from Rotherham on a three-day trip to London to take part in the school. It was always the intention of Professor Cox and Lord Mawson to create a northern satellite event and Rotherham was chosen to pioneer the northern expansion. Find out more about the event at www.northstarscience school.co.uk.

Dorset

Devon

Located in southwest England, Dorset is known for the Jurassic Coast, a long stretch on the English Channel where the cliffs contain many fossils, and rock formations show millions of years of geological history. Two prominent natural landmarks includes Durdle Door, an ancient stone arch, and the layered cliffs at Lulworth Cove. The towns of Poole, Weymouth and Swanage are popular for their sandy beaches. Dorset has a variety of museums, theatres and festivals, and is host to the Great Dorset Steam Fair, one of the biggest events of its kind in Europe. The region is also renowned for being the birthplace of notable literary figures such as Thomas Hardy, who used the county as the principal setting of his novels, and William Barnes, whose poetry celebrates the ancient Dorset dialect.

Located in south-west England, Devon is renowned for its sandy beaches, fossil cliffs, medieval towns and moorland national parks. The English Riviera is a series of picturesque, south-coast harbour towns including Torquay, Paignton and Brixham. The South West Coast Path follows the coastline, taking in the towering cliffs of the northern Exmoor Coast and rock formations on the fossil-rich southern Jurassic Coast. Devon also has a comparatively mild climate, which makes it very appealing to traditional holidaymakers. This diverse region has everything from the bustling cities of Plymouth and Exeter to an abundance of family-friendly holiday resorts in the south. Devon also has two national parks, plenty of waterways and countrysides perfect for a rural or riverside retreat.

Cornwall Located on England’s rugged south-western tip, Cornwall has been a holiday favourite for generations. Renowned for its spectacular coastline and very mild climate, the region forms a peninsula encompassing wild moorland and hundreds of sandy beaches, culminating at the dramatic granite cliffs of Land’s End. The south coast, dubbed the Cornish Riviera, is home to picturesque harbour villages such as St. Ives and Falmouth. The north coast is lined with towering cliffs and seaside resorts like Newquay, known for surfing. Extensive stretches of Cornwall’s coastline, and Bodmin Moor, are protected as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk 23

Lindisfarne, Northumberland

Northumberland

Norfolk

Stretching from the Scottish Borders to Hadrian’s Wall, Northumberland is home to two Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and a national park. Located on the northeast coast of England, the region is renowned for its undeveloped landscape of high moorland, which is now largely protected as the Northumberland National Park. Northumberland remains largely rural and is the leastdensely populated county in England. In recent years the region has had considerable growth in tourism.Visitors are attracted to its scenic beauty, expansive beaches and historical sites. A boat trip to the Farne Islands to see the wildlife or the historic eighth century Lindisfarne Gospels on Holy Island is a must for holidaymakers.

Located in East Anglia, Norfolk is a popular tourist destination and has several major holiday attractions. The region boasts many seaside resorts, including some of the finest British beaches, such as those at Great Yarmouth, Cromer and Holkham. Alongside this, Norfolk also contains the Broads National Park and other Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Many areas of Norfolk’s coast are wild bird sanctuaries and reserves, with some areas designated as national parks such as the Norfolk Coast AONB. The region’s largest city, Norwich is renowned for its heritage, culture and shopping, as well as countless outdoor activities, a variety of family theme parks and attractions, historical sights and Royal connections.

The Lake District Located in the northwest of England, the Lake District is the largest national park in the UK. A popular vacation destination, the region is known for its glacial ribbon lakes, rugged fell mountains and historic literary associations. The Lake District is home to Scafell Pike, the highest mountain in England, as well as Wastwater and Windermere, the deepest and largest natural lakes in the country. Sixteen million visitors a year enjoy a wide range of activities and attractions such as camping, hiking, cycling and sailing. Market towns such as Kendal, Ambleside and Keswick on scenic Derwentwater are bases for exploring the region and are home to a variety of traditional inns, galleries of local art and outdoor equipment shops.

Wales Wales is known for its rugged coastline, mountainous national parks and Celtic culture. It has three national parks: Snowdonia, Brecon Beacons and Pembrokeshire Coast. Snowdon is the highest mountain in the UK outside of Scotland and attracts thousands of visitors every year. Wales is a place of natural drama and things to do, from the country’s beautiful beaches such as Tenby, to walking the stunning mountain ranges of Snowdon. Its capital city, Cardiff, is a refined coastal city with a nightlife scene and a medieval castle with ornate Gothic Revival interiors.

Yorkshire We couldn’t put together a ‘staycation guide’ without including our very own county. Within the borders of this historic region are more national parks than any other place in the UK. This includes the Yorkshire Dales, the North York Moors and part of the Peak District. The soaring natural beauty of the Yorkshire Dales, the stunning landscapes of the North York Moors and the dramatic hills of the Peak District have attracted more visitors than ever over the last few years, made popular by events such as the Tour de Yorkshire. Alongside its various national parks, the region also boasts beautiful seaside resorts such as Scarborough, Filey and the ever-popular Whitby. The county town of York is also a popular destination as it is home to many historic buildings such as the thirteenth century cathedral York Minster, Tudor houses and medieval walls. SCHOOLS

Back to school SEPTEMBER SAW THE RETURN OF CHILDREN TO FULL-TIME EDUCATION. HERE WE LOOK AT SOME OF THE LEADING EDUCATION ESTABLISHMENTS IN OUR AREA AND HOW THEY HAVE ESTABLISHED A ‘NEW NORMAL’.

Gateways School Gateways is known for its small class sizes; the average class size is between 14-18 pupils. This means that every child is known individually, is valued for their strengths and is supported to overcome their weaknesses. As well as having excellent GCSE and A Level results, Gateways is regularly placed in the top ten schools nationally for Value Added. Gateways High School was traditionally a girls-only environment, however in September 2019, the High School welcomed boys into Year 7. Over the next few years, the High School will become progressively co-educational, meaning in September 2021 boys will be able to join Year 7,Year 8 and Year 9. The Nursery, Pre-Reception and Primary (Prep) school accepts boys and girls from age 2 through to Year 6 (age 10/11). Go and see how your child could benefit from everything Gateways has to offer – call them on 0113 288 6345 to arrange a visit.

Giggleswick School Giggleswick, an independent co-educational boarding school, continues to deliver excellence in all round education in times of uncertainty. The school encourages ambition in every child by teaching them to value themselves and foster their own talents. Learning is based upon participation in the full breadth of a rich curriculum, which, with careful support for the wellbeing of every child, achieves excellent academic outcomes at A level and GCSE. To find out more, call 01729 893000 or visit www.giggleswick.org.uk

Moorfield School Moorfield School and Nursery, Ilkley is proud to announce that under the Headship of Mrs Herbert, the school has once again, been awarded full membership of the Independent Association of Prep Schools (IAPS), the only prep school in the area to achieve this. Schools have to reach a very high standard to be eligible for IAPS membership, with a strict criteria on teaching a broad curriculum, maintaining excellent standards of pastoral care and keeping staff members’ professional development training up-to-date. Being a member of IAPS is a kitemark of quality and only those schools that can demonstrate the highest standards of education can be accredited. For more information visit the school website at www.moorfieldschool.co.uk. They would love to see you. Open Day everyday! Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk 29

students in the academically focused College achieved 97 per cent A*/B at A level and 100 per cent D*/D in the small number of BTECs taken to enrich the A level programmes (equivalent in university points to A* and A grades at A Level). The Faculty, which offers a wider range of academic, creative and vocational courses, achieved 96 per cent A*/B at A Level and 86 per cent D*/D in BTECs. The Collegiate has risen to the challenge of starting the new school year during the current COVID-19 pandemic, gaining the COVID Safe BSA Charter and providing boarders with the option of a two week pre-term stay for students to become accustomed to the changes put in place to ensure their safety, prepare for the school year ahead and complete any quarantine period that might be necessary. Principal Jeff Smith explains: “QE has complied with, and gone beyond, the measures required by the Government

and we have committed ourselves to the BSA School Safe Charter, putting adaptable plans in place for this coming year and beyond. “We will continue to find ways to broaden and improve the curriculum and enrichment opportunities we offer and continue to extend students’ learning beyond the classroom. We will use our recent online teaching experience to update our IT strategy, taking the opportunity to develop e-learning in an impactful way. Through our academic, pastoral and enrichment programmes, we will continue to develop the personal qualities of our students, such as leadership, resilience, critical thinking and responsibility. As always, we will prioritise the safeguarding, health and wellbeing of all our students and staff.” * To note: At the time of writing, the BSA Awards 2020 ceremony had not yet taken place. CHILDREN’S PARTIES

Happy (and safe) birthday HOW WILL CHILDREN BE CELEBRATING THEIR BIRTHDAYS OVER THE COMING MONTHS? FROM NETFLIX PARTIES TO SCAVENGER HUNTS, WE TAKE A CLOSER LOOK AT COVID-COMPLIANT OPTIONS.

CHILDREN’S PARTIES

he last six months have been a challenging time for all of us, if you’re a parent, perhaps even more so. Homeschooling is something many of us thought we would never have to do but quickly became a way of life was we got to grips with Google Classroom, Numbots, Oak National Academy and PE With Joe. If you managed to make it through without a cross word, hat’s off to you, you deserve a medal. Now your children have returned to school all those months of hard work and endeavour to keep them educated and entertained is quickly forgotten. Talk of new teachers, new rules and what friends have been up to during lockdown has taken over. It’s about as ‘normal’ as we can get at this moment in time. This return to school and reconnection with friends also raises the question of birthday parties, particularly amongst younger children. It’ll not be long before invitations are flying out for those children who will be celebrating birthdays in the coming weeks and months. But something will have to change. Due to the current Covid-19 pandemic, a lot of the usual ‘go-to’ parties are no longer an option. Play centres have only just re-opened and are limiting numbers, swimming parties are a no-no and having the whole class round for tea is perhaps something that will have to wait until next year. So what’s left? Something outdoors is the first thing that springs to mind as this is the best way to minimise the chance of any infection but, depending on when your birthday is, you’re probably going to be weather dependent. If it does take a turn for the worse, there are plenty of virtual options which, let’s be honest, have become second nature to our younger ones. Here we look at some socially distant and Covid-compliant party options, inside and out.

T

Woodland magic A trip to the woods is great for children who love wildlife and it’s a wonderful way to get them active in the fresh air. Try activities including den building, scavenger hunts, nature watching and even an obstacle course.

Teddy bears picnic This can be held in your own back

garden or at a nearby park. Ask your friends to each bring a bear and gather in socially distant spaces for drinks, nibbles and maybe even a game of musical statues.

Woodland and Dino Dens amongst others. To find out more, visit justjimjams.wixsite.com.

Netflix and chill

Again, this could be held at home or any other outdoor space. Draw maps, create clues and let children have fun exploring their surroundings. You could even add a theme. Finish off with a mini picnic or event a piñata.

A Netflix party lets friends in different places watch movies or TV shows together online. Netflix Party synchronises video playback and adds group chat to your favourite Netflix shows. It’s free to use, you just need a Netflix account and the Google Chrome browser. See netflixparty.com to find out more.

Football fever

Karaoke King (and Queen)

One for the boys, outdoor football venues are now re-open and are a great way to let your children blow off some steam. Goals, who have venues throughout Yorkshire, have reinstated their birthday packages and include 90 minutes of coach-led football fun as well as some tasty food and drinks afterwards.Visit goalsfootball.co.uk to find out more.

There are no end of video conferencing and call apps and all can be put to good use when it comes to hosting a virtual karaoke party. Whether you’re using Skype, Google Hangout or House Party, everyone can join in, whether they choose to sing or not. What would your go-to karaoke song be?

Treasure hunt

Sleepover party You might want to invite a few friends over to take residence in your garden for the night. There are plenty of companies who can organise the whole thing for you, supplying tents, dens, air mattresses, fairy lights… you name it. South Yorkshire-based Just Jim Jams started last year and have quickly adapted so they can continue to host parties in the current climate. Their glamping parties, held under a huge bell tent, have been a big hit with younger children. Many of their packages are themed; you can choose from Under the Sea, Fairy

Dinner date Much like the virtual karaoke party, older children might want to host a virtual dinner party. You can cook at home or order a takeaway, chat while you eat and drink and then maybe enjoy a game of bingo, host a quiz or play charades.

Pamper party Getting your girls together might seem like a great idea but you can host a pamper party at a distance use video apps like Skype, Zoom or FaceTime. Get some beauty video tutorials set up and follow along – you can do everything from make-up and nails to hair and brows. Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk 33

FITNESS

Fit for purpose DON’T BE A CHRISTMAS PUDDING THIS YEAR. THERE’S STILL TIME TO GET FITTER, LIVE HEALTHIER AND FEEL GREAT. WHILE OTHERS WAIT ON NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS, YOU COULD ALREADY BE BASKING IN YOUR ACHIEVEMENTS… WITH A LITTLE EXPERT HEALTH. f you’re serious about getting fit for Christmas, there are two important dates in the calendar. The first is 5 November. That’s when you build a bonfire – of all those books about miracle diets and other no-effort remedies. If they have any effect at all, it’s likely to be short-lived. And the prospect of a week on cabbage soup or equivalent, in our estimation at least, is a greater threat to the will to live than any form of physical torture yet devised. But it doesn’t have to be a choice like that. Just ask an international elite athlete. Take Mary Fleming for instance. She has represented Australia as part of the national orienteering team. For those of us unfamiliar with the sport, it involves navigational skills using a map and compass to navigate from point to point in diverse and usually unfamiliar terrain whilst moving at speed. Considerable speed. Originally a training exercise in land navigation for military officers, it’s rather like fast fell running while finding your way with a map. It is, to say the least, demanding. But having forsaken her native Melbourne for South Yorkshire, she has now turned her attention to getting us portly poms in shape. Her second business venture – she is already involved in sports equipment retailing – provides personal training under the umbrella of Peak Fitness.

Our guide to fitness clubs in Leeds and Harrogate There are numerous gyms and health clubs in Leeds and Harrogate, most of them offering personal training. Here’s a brief guide to some of the bestknown. DAVID LLOYD LEISURE Leeds & Harrogate Membership: TBC Joining fee: TBC Swimming Pool: Yes) Other: Spa, tennis and kids club also available.

So how would she respond to the challenged of getting Mr or Mrs Average fit for Christmas? Mary says it’s all about setting ‘smart goals’ – goals that are measurable, achievable, relevant and time-based. This is not just about weight loss, though many of her clients have exactly that in mind. The measurable element comes as part of setting an individual’s chosen target. So what are the possibilities open to those who want to shed the pounds? A healthy amount would be one to two pounds per week, and Mary prepares an exercise programme accordingly. “If we have someone who wants to lose more – say a stone – then the realistic length of time required would be seven to 14 weeks, which is readily achievable if the aim is to do this in time for Christmas – even one to two stones is within reach. “If a client came and said they wanted to lose four stones, then we would have to advise them that this is not a healthy goal in the available span of time. But perhaps by March it could be done.” As part of the fresh look at all matters relating to well-being, Mary creates a diet diary and recommends improvements, albeit gradual ones. “I would not recommend a complete overhaul of someone’s diet immediately. It’s a case of one or two changes each week, so the chances of success are far greater,” she says. The best motivating factor is when a client has a specific aim in mind – like being able to fit into a wedding dress in 42 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

time for the day, or perhaps they’ve signed up for a 10k race. “It often comes down to a choice – either you find a motivator or you have to adjust your expectations.” One success story she is particularly proud of is that of a 54-year-old client who was a regular short distance runner, but wanted to improve her speed and distance capabilities without aggravating a niggling injury. At the end of a carefully-crafted exercise schedule, the client succeeded in her goal of running the London Marathon. Turning to the content of the training schedule, Mary sets a balance of roughly 80 per cent cardio-vascular development and 20 per cent strength and conditioning. The schedules are built around timed sessions based on activities like rowing machine work and running, both indoor or outdoor, or cross training and cycling. But how to ensure that all this effort is not wasted amid a junkfest of mince pies and turkey, and a torrent of Baileys and Malibu? Easy. We set the date for being fit by Christmas as 1 December, and then start work on the next goal for the post-festive season and beyond. This allows for a little ‘downtime’ during the Christmas season itself. Whatever your aim, it’s achievable and the best time to start is now.You can have a new outlook on life by the time you’re unwrapping the presents. Believe.

What is MediSculpt Therapy? G&M HEALTHCARE CAN HELP YOU ACHIEVE YOUR WEIGHT LOSS GOALS. ediSculpt Therapy is a nonsurgical, very low calorie weight loss program which can combat obesity and some chronic medical conditions like type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, high cholesterol, hypertension and sleep apnoea. Medisculpt Therapy comprises of three main components; the diet, which is based on high protein foods with low carbohydrate and low fat contents, and two body contouring treatments – LPG Endermologie and Vanquish MeTM or Exilis Elite machines. The body contouring treatment LPG Endermologie is used for skin tightening in order to prevent the development of loose and sagging skin during and after the rapid weight loss. The second body contouring machine is a radio frequency machine for body fat reduction. G&M Healthcare has both of these machines and the choice of which one to use depends on the treatment package and area of the body requiring treatment. The radio frequency machines result in a significant fat reduction in targeted areas like the tummy, thighs or arms. These treatments are carried out weekly by fully-trained therapists and last about 3040 minutes each. In total you need about 75-90 minutes per week for your treatments. Weight loss with MediSculpt Therapy is safe, efficient and rapid. The weight loss progress is constantly monitored by a qualified GP and fully trained therapists who check weight loss progress, blood pressure, body fat content, metabolic rates and do blood tests on a regular basis. With regard to the results, they know from experience that a female patient will typically lose one stone a month and a male patient will typically lose one to one and a half stones a month. MediSculpt Therapy consists of six phases, which deliver amazing, safe, efficient and sustainable weight loss.

M

During phase 1 of MediSculpt Therapy the diet comprises of five meals and one snack a day. Protein foods are filling, hence patients don’t Before feel hungry. To supplement the diet some fruit and vegetables are also allowed on the diet. G&M Healthcare also do metabolic tests to check your metabolic rates and also provide supplements to ensure you don’t lack in essential minerals like magnesium, potassium, sodium chloride, calcium and trace minerals. Once the phase 1 target is achieved after losing about 70 per cent of your target weight, patients are moved onto phase 2 where ‘normal foods’, like weighed amounts of chicken, meat, fish and diary like eggs, are introduced. Once 90 per cent of your target weight loss is achieved patients are weaned to measured amounts of normal eating on phase 3. Thereafter phases 4-6 are stabilisation phases to ensure that optimum weaning off from the diet is achieved without putting on back the weight you have lost. After the stabilisation phase there is a life-long maintenance programme where G&M Healthcare six weekly follow ups for review by a therapist who measures your weight and body fat composition. Follow up is then 3-6 monthly for one year or as required thereafter. The cost of the program depends on the package you choose. There are three price packages – basic, standard and deluxe. All consist of your consultation fee (£100) and blood test fee (£100) followed by the package fees. Supplement prices are £50/month but

After

vary depending on the package you choose. The basic package is £125/week for only food. The standard package is £250/week for food and body contouring treatments with LPG Endermologie and Vanquish or Exilis Elite. The deluxe package is £300/week and includes food, body contouring treatments, supplements, 4 weekly reviews and blood tests. Recent studies from the Diabetes Remission Clinical Trial (DiRECT), published by G Thom et al in Glasgow in collaboration with the NHS in September this year and by Yiqoao Xin et al in May 2020, have shown that very low calorie diets can cause remission in people with early type 2 Diabetes Mellitus of less than six years since onset. The programme is now being rolled out on a bigger trial of 5,000 people in the UK. G&M Healthcare is offering a free informal consultation with their GP, so if you would like to learn more and have your weight and body fat composition checked, please call 0114 233 5000, text them on 07944 629727 or email g.m.healthcarereception@gmail.com Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk 43

This soap will leave your skin feeling cleansed, fresh and moisturised. Worked into a rich lather, it also works brilliantly as a shaving bar.

Georganics natural toothpaste activated charcoal £6.90 www.georganics.com This natural toothpaste is blended with activated charcoal and flavoured with organic peppermint oil - which studies have shown to be extremely effective at killing anaerobic bacteria (if left untreated, this can cause gum disease). The peroxide-free formulation is a great alternative to conventional whitening toothpastes, removing surface stains naturally, without being harsh and abrasive to your teeth.

Blushberry Botanicals calming and purifying clay face mask www.blushberrybotanicals .co.uk This calming and purifying mask contains charcoal, chamomile, lavender and tea tree to help clear and calm the skin. With kaolin and bentonite clay, organic corn starch and oatmeal and calamine powder, the active ingredients gently and thoroughly cleanse the pores and reduces inflammation to reveal fresh, soft and smooth skin.

Noble Isle Whisky & Water bath and shower gel 250ml £21 Aromatic wood and spice are blended with proteins derived from organic Scottish malted barley extract (a natural skin calmer) to create liquid gold redolent of the finest oakaged single malt with warm vanilla and cedarwood on the nose. Londe Botanics Starflower Serum £29 www.londebotanics.co.uk A gently nourishing facial serum with British grown borage (starflower) and chia seed oils, enriched with Vitamin E. A natural saviour for all skin types, to soften, revitalise and protect. This unscented serum can be massaged into clean skin as required, or added to moisturisers and creams for a boost of radiance. Available in 10ml rollerball and 20ml bottle. Annmarie Gianni jade skin roller from Live in the Light £40.96 www.liveinthelight.co.uk The Annmarie Skin Care signature Stone Roller is made with ethically sourced jade. A timeless stone that has been formed into facial tools for centuries in traditional Chinese medicine. Topically, it has been shown to calm skin while delivering anti-aging effects.

Authentic House charcoal, lime and ginger soap www.authentic house.co.uk A deep cleansing treat for your skin with a powerful combination of activated charcoal, pink clay and green clay. This bar is great at balancing out the oils in your skin and helping to prevent acne. Lime, patchouli and ginger essential oils are blended to give a deep, peppery scent. QUESTION: I have been told I need to have a prostate biopsy to check my prostate. I have heard about a new biopsy technique called “TP biopsy procedure, what does this involve?

ANSWER: Prostate cancer is now the commonest cancer to be diagnosed in the UK. Most men will have an MRI scan of their prostate if they have been tested and found to have a raised PSA test from their GP or urologist or have concerns about prostate cancer. An MRI scan can highlight areas within the prostate gland which may need to be tested using a biopsy procedure to find out if there is any prostate cancer present. Traditionally, a prostate biopsy, called a TRUS biopsy, was undertaken which involved inserting a needle through the wall of the rectum in order to get a tissue sample of the prostate which could then be analysed. This type of biopsy was safe for most men but carried with it a risk of infection in up to five per cent of patients and this could lead to sepsis, a very serious infection. A new biopsy technique has now been introduced in Leeds called Transperineal or TP biopsy. The procedure can be undertaken by a consultant interventional radiologist or a consultant urologist. During this procedure, the needle is inserted through the skin overlying the prostate rather than through the rectum. By taking this approach, the risk of infection is significantly reduced. In addition, a TP biopsy allows the doctors to target areas of the prostate which can be difficult to reach using the TRUS technique. TP biopsy procedures can also be performed under local anaesthetic in an outpatient department which means the patient can come into hospital and go home after a short period. Spire Leeds Hospital in Roundhay is the only private hospital in the region offering the new TP biopsy procedure under local anaesthetic in an out-patient setting. For information on how to arrange a TP biopsy test, prices and appointment times, please contact Spire Leeds Hospital Private Patient Advisors on the details below.Alternatively visit Prostate Cancer UK prostatecanceruk.org

EATING OUT

Tickled and fancy KARL AND AMANDA MAINEY ARE SPECIALISTS AT GIVING RUN-DOWN PUBS A NEW LEASE OF LIFE. THE TICKLED TROUT IS THE PERFECT EXAMPLE, WRITES MARTIN EDWARDS. o great minds do not, it turns out, think alike. They think differently. Just ask any visitor to the Tickled Trout. Nearly everything about the place seems to exude originality. When you’ve been reviewing restaurants for as long as I have, you can be forgiven for thinking you’ve seen it all. Well now I have. Take the menu as an example. Who would have thought of a seared mackerel

S

Seared mackerel salad Nicoise with quails eggs

salad Nicoise with quails eggs? A smoked salmon Scotch egg? The clever trick with the menu is that it performs the balancing act of combining new variations with tried and tested standards. So you’ll also see the likes of fish pie and fish and chips, for example. You’ll notice I’ve mentioned only fish dishes so far. There are plenty of other offerings available, but the Tickled Trout does specialise in seafood. There is a voluminous specials board in addition to what is already a large menu. On our visit there were the first of the season’s oysters on special, and a particularly good crab bisque, among many other options. The piscine theme continues throughout the place, right down to a notice in the car park warning that the management will not be responsible for ‘fishy goings on’. It’s all a far cry from its former identity as a village pub on the fringes of Bilton-in- Ainsty, which has been transformed under the ownership of 54 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

“There is nothing nicer than having a pub in your village and being able to walk there and have a pint and a good pub lunch.” husband and wife team Karl and Amanda Mainey. The two first met in the ski resort of Courchevel, where he was working as a chef, she as a chalet girl. After moving back to the UK, there then followed a helter-skelter ride of restaurants acquired then sold, notably the Spice Box in Harrogate, the Fox and Hounds at Walton and the Crown Inn near Boroughbridge. Dilapidated pubs soon took on a new lease of life after the Maineys applied their magic touch. The path then led to their latest venture, which was planned as a fourmonth refurbishment programme

followed by a grand opening on New Year’s Day. All went well – before a certain virus brought things to a halt. “We buy these old buildings, pubs that have gone into disrepair, and put a bit of love back into them. We like to rekindle the idea of good food and service at these places. We are very much into country inns and country pubs and we believe every village in the UK should have its own pub,” he says. “There is nothing nicer than having a pub in your village and being able to walk there and have a pint and a good pub lunch.” The astute Mr Mainey realises of

course that not everyone can walk to his establishment and so has transformed the Tickled Trout into not only a restaurant, but a boutique hotel to boot. Again, original thinking is apparent wherever you look in the rooms. Instead of the standard bottle of Prosecco there is a decanter of port waiting. Instead of the usual digestive biscuits there are Curly-Wurlys, a discovery that instantly transported me back to a seventies childhood. The room key is attached to an authentic-looking lifesize fabric fish, which causes some odd looks when you come down from your room for dinner. Outside there is a Bedouin tent complete with decorative lighting, which is just the thing for a party with a difference, and an outdoor pizza oven. The rooms are supremely comfortable and the bathrooms are spectacular. Just the thing for soaking in the bath while

you contemplate your choices from the menu. “We want it to be the kind of place where you can come for a break and a change of scenery, have another bottle of wine and perhaps a glass of port before bedtime. The aim is to offer a nice comfortable stay for our customers.
