Concrete excellence for ALNO

The luxury kitchen manufacturer is celebrating after being crowned a winner by the prestigious German Design Council.

A

LNO is certainly no stranger when it comes to being recognised for excellence. Adding to its already extensive list of achievements, the distinguished German kitchen manufacturer has been awarded with not one, but two German Design Awards for its innovative products and inspiring designs. Chosen as the winner for ‘Excellent Product Design – Kitchen’ in the German Design Awards 2016, ALNOCERA in Concretto is inspired by the industrial trend – one of the biggest kitchen interior trends for this year. In a beautiful shade of stylish grey, the concrete-effect finish and subtle deviations in the natural texture of the highquality ceramic are what make this unique

design stand apart from others. As striking as it is practical, ALNOCERA offers a flawless, elegant look to complement any home, creating a space that projects class. Joining in the jubilations, ALNOSTAR PLAN in Oxide Grey was awarded with a ‘German Design Special Mention’ for its stunning textured surfaces, reminiscent of oxidised steel. Expertly blended, the cool tones of Oxide Grey, together with accents of Steel Blue, effortlessly catch the eye for a winning design that injects drama and intrigue into the busy kitchen space. NS Cycling

Steps to greatness Specialized Concept Store offers a guide to eight milestones on the path to mastering the road bike.

C

ycling is something most people do from a very young age, but that doesn’t mean that everyone is a cyclist. For some the bike is simply a convenient and cheap means of transportation, but for the truly dedicated it becomes part of who we are. For ‘true’ cyclists there are some steps everyone seems to go through on their journey; from clothing choices, to ambitious expeditions, to social activities. So here they are, the eight rites of passage (or should that be ‘pedallage?) that every road cyclist will go through on their path to becoming a cycling machine.

1

2

Embrace the lycra Sure, there’s a hint of silliness that goes along with wearing extremely tight-fitting clothes, but as the old saying goes, ‘once you go Lycra, you’ll never go back’. The transition from regular sports gear to Lycra is one of the earliest, but also most rewarding milestones a cyclist will pass, if for no other reason than the elimination of chafing while in the saddle. Get in the drops It might be scary at first, but the advantages of riding on drop handlebars, AKA ‘in the drops’, are absolutely huge once you get the knack. A tight, aero position is essential to going fast on a bike – so conquer the fear and get ready to fly!

up 3 Team Once you’ve built a bit of confidence on your bike, you might feel the need to train more seriously. One of the easiest ways to step it up a notch is joining a club. There’s

NS • page 12

as any different types of club as there are types of rider – so don’t be put off by the classic perception of clubs as fusty, traditionalists. There is a club for you! full clip 4 Go After mastering the drops the next, slightly scarier step, is to attach your feet to the pedals by way of a pair of clip-in shoes. Of course, to every newbie this sounds like madness, but to any experienced rider the opposite seems totally crazy. You get such a superior transfer of power that once you switch, there’s no turning back. a centurion 5 Become Riding 100 miles in a single ride is something of a mythic achievement in cycling. At the beginning it seems positively inconceivable, but if you take it one step at a time it’ll become a very real possibility. Once you’ve completed a 50-miler, it’ll suddenly seem an easier task the next time you try. Likewise with every distance from 60 miles until you hit the big 1-0-0. And after that? Well there’s always the double centurion. Why not triple? it overseas 6 Take When you’ve been riding for a while you may start to tire of your local roads – that’s when it’s time to plan a cycling holiday to Europe! Vuelta a Espana, Giro d’Italia, ParisRoubaix – regardless of which continental bike race is your favourite, Europe has hundreds of great riding destinations where you can got to emulate the greats and ride the same routes as the pros.

on your race face 7 Put It’s virtually impossible to be a cyclist for a long time without getting a tiny bit competitive, so sooner or later you’ll probably feel the need to enter a race. You can sign up with British Cycling for as little as £22 and get access to their extensive list of races – with something happening on most weekends throughout the spring and summer. to tour 8 Time Once you’ve mastered single day bike rides, it’s time to branch out into multi-day expeditions, or even multi-stage sportives. This could take the form of you entering an organised ride like the NSPCC’s Tour of England, or tackling the Lands End to John O’Groats in aid of your chosen charity. Either way it’s sure to be an epic test of endurance that’ll finally prove your status as a cycling hero.

Where do you rank on the list of steps to greatness? Are you planning to make the leap to the next level soon? Specialized Concept Store Unit 1, 8-10 W Park, Harrogate, HG1 1BL Tel: 01423 528240 www.specializedconceptstore.co.uk

NS Travel Tony Hallwood (right), Leeds Bradford® aviation development director

Ready for take-off

Words: Stephanie Burns

Have your say on Leeds Bradford® Airport’s bright future.

L

eeds Bradford® Airport has grand plans for its future – and they are asking for your views and comments on how they’re going to make it happen. Until 30 April, the airport’s Masterplan ‘Road to 2030’ – a strategic development plan (SDP) for the next 15 years that outlines their ambitions for improving infrastructure, becoming even more appealing to short, medium and long-distance flyers and cementing its reputation as Yorkshire’s gateway to the world – will be available for public consultation in several locations around the region. Tony Hallwood, Leeds Bradford® aviation development director, explains: “We are touring libraries and other public locations around North and West Yorkshire and hosting various regional meetings to allow people to have their say. We are inviting feedback from local residents because they are our existing and future passengers and we’d like to understand which facilities would encourage them to use Leeds Bradford® more often. We know people love to support everything Yorkshire, so we’re inviting them to help shape the airport’s future.” The Masterplan highlights how the airport might be developed up to 2030

NS • page 18

including extensions to the terminal, improved surface transport access links, an airport hotel close to the terminal, a new ‘commercial hub’ including an airport village, an innovation park and freight park. Proposals also include additional apron parking, construction of new taxiways and additional car parking facilities. One of the most important elements is the improved transport links to the airport, which will increase its connectivity with its closest towns and cities, including Leeds, Harrogate and York. The plan is to build a parkway station about a mile from the airport that will double up as a park and ride facility for those living in the region. “We really want to become the airport that’s easier to access and new rail links and road improvements will allow us to do that,” says Tony. “Leeds Bradford® would love to be linked more closely with the region and the local transport infrastructure, as well as being integrated with HS2 and HS3.” And, Tony adds, it’s not just the airport that is set to benefit from these changes. “We believe the Masterplan is not only about the growth and development of the airport itself but also delivering new jobs within close proximity and providing new jobs across the Yorkshire service industry as a whole.”

If the SDP is implemented, the major economic impact will be felt across across the community. In addition to the workers required during the development, the new airlines and destinations that will be introduced as a result of its growth will require extra staff. It is estimated that by 2030 the airport’s GVA contribution to the Leeds City Region will reach £724million and 10,000 jobs could be provided – almost double the current figures. Those interested in becoming part of the Leeds Bradford® team won’t have to wait until 2030 to get involved. A number of aspirations and ideas in the Masterplan have already been approved, including the growth and development of passenger terminals, which are due to be implemented when passenger numbers reach a pre-determined level. In the meantime, for information on the dates and locations of the public consultations, and to find out where to direct your comments on the SDP, visit www.leedsbradfordairport.co.uk/about-theairport/airport-masterplan. Theatre Breakfast at Tiffany’s

Pixie Lott takes centre stage as Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany’s

4-9 April, Leeds Grand Theatre Tel: 0844 848 2700. www.leedsgrandtheatre.com Tickets: £18.50-35 Breakfast at Tiffany’s, the classic novel by Truman Capote and renowned film starring Audrey Hepburn, has been given a revamp as a stage play in a glitz and glamour production starring the multi-award winning Pixie Lott as Holly. The story of Holly Golightly, a lively, good-time girl living in New York City in the 1940s, is told through the eyes of a young writer named Fred, played by Matt Barber from Downton Abbey. He is wholly enthralled by this exquisite extrovert who every woman wants to be, and every man wants to be with. Set to capture the hearts of the audience and shine like a diamond in a Tiffany’s window amongst the Leeds theatre scene.

The Railway Children 7 April, Harrogate Theatre Tel: 01423 502116. www.harrogatetheatre.co.uk This well-loved tale is brought to life by Woolford and John’s amazing adaptation. Roberta, Peter and Phyllis all live in a comfortable house in London until their father, who works within the government, is falsely accused of selling state secrets and is imprisoned. The children and their mother flee to a quiet cottage next to the railway in Oakworth,Yorkshire. Connections made within their new village could be the key to the release of their father. A beautiful blend of storytelling, drama, comedy and musical theatre, this is the perfect way of bringing literature to life.

Charity event Variety takes over popular fundraiser The Crystal Event has handed the reigns to Variety, a charity which raises funds for sick, disabled and disadvantaged children across Yorkshire. The two-day event, which has been taking place in the grounds of Ripley Castle for ten years, is attended by over 800 guests and raises thousands of pounds for charity. The crystal clay shoot will take place on Friday 29 April and the legendary ball will take place on 30 April. Adopting a ‘strictly diamonds’ theme, the event is set to dazzle with performances from Aljaz and Janette of Aljaz and Janette of Strictly Come Dancing, X Factor finalist Ray Quinn and Strictly Come Dancing the UK’s maddest party band Huge. The Yorkshire Party Company are also set to work with celebrity chef Rosemary Shrager to create a signature menu. Teams for the shoot and tables for the ball can be purchased now by visiting www.variety.org.uk.

Showing fine art will be Baron Fine Art, Walker Galleries of Harrogate and Haynes Fine Art. Jewellery will be represented by Licht & Morrison, Howards of Stratford and Saul Greenstein of London. Silver will be shown by Jack Shaw & Co from Yorkshire and there will be pottery and porcelain from Roger de Ville, John Newton and Valerie Main. New to the fair this spring are The Parker Gallery, with fine art from the 19th century, Paul Hodson Antiques from the Ribble Valley and Sac & Co from London.

NS Cycling

Up your work rate

Lose weight, get fit, improve your chances of promotion at work and save money – what’s not to love?

S

ummer is almost upon us and there is no better time to ‘up your work rate’. Cycling is one of the best low-impact, easy-to-do and fun forms of exercise out there, with a range of proven benefits that we all want. The facts – just a few of which are listed here – are impressive. In a recent study of 150,000 people, those who cycled to work were on average 5kg (11 pounds) lighter than those who drove. In terms of reduced risk of diabetes and other chronic disease, that amount is what will tip most people from being overweight to normal weight. A study carried out by the University of Bristol found that people who exercised before work or at lunch time improved their workload management and output, had increased motivation and their ability to deal with stress was improved. According to the British Heart Foundation, around 10,000 fatal heart attacks could be avoided by moderate levels of exercise. Compared to those who take no exercise at all, cycling just 20 miles per week reduces the risk of heart disease to less than half. Chevin Cycles have known all of these

benefits for some time and are fully supportive and involved with promoting the government’s Cycle to Work initiative. There really is no cheaper way of buying a bike as you will typically save between 25 and 40 per cent of the cost of a bike. The process is easy, quick and straightforward and there are no credit checks. The hardest part is choosing which bike! Chevin Cycles have provided thousands of bikes on the scheme and many of their Cycle to Work customers return year after year for a new bike. Visit their dedicated website www.upyourworkrate.com for more information.

Chevin Cycles have been in business locally for over 40 years. They have more than 750 bikes on display at any time across their three stores – in Otley, Harrogate and Skipton – and the sales teams are trained, expert, passionate riders who will talk you through the different options to help you choose the best bike for you, no matter what your experience or ability. They pride themselves on this high standard of service and, crucially, make sure that the bike fits you properly. And, once you’ve taken your bike home, the service doesn’t stop. You have access to all the ongoing support, guidance and maintenance you want throughout your lifetime of biking. Visit any of their three stores and they will help you ‘up your work rate’ and set you on the way to achieving any or all of your goals. If you’re an employer and you’d like to understand more about how the Cycle to Work scheme can help your business, contact Chevin Cycles’ Cycle to Work business manager John Nicholson on john.nicholson@chevincycles.com Think you’re far too unfit to start riding a bike again? Electric bikes are also available on the scheme and Chevin Cycles has a full range that they’re sure you’ll love.

Floral trends are in full bloom this season says Lucy Pitt, buyer for Morgan Clare.

H

aving just returned from London Fashion week, Paris and Milan and all the inspiring AW16 collections it is good to get back to focussing on the season we are in. With spring sunshine (even if not every day) and the promise of summer, the mood is perfect for the fabulous prints and colours featured throughout the designer collections. The trend that we are particularly excited about this season is florals. These absolutely bloomed across the SS16 catwalk collections with much of the focus being on English summer garden flowers. Designers used flower prints and patterns on feminine silhouettes and we have seen these translated onto the shop floor at Morgan Clare, particularly with designers such as Stella McCartney, A.L.C, Joseph and Velvet. Florals this season have played Etoile Elmer homage to the nostalgic seventies. Dark black floral jacket, £220 colour combinations and attentioncommanding pieces will make this theme feel fresh again. Etoile for SS16 has summed up the 70s floral vibe very well with their boho floral dresses and jackets. The bloom trend, often present in the world of fashion, but portrayed with a different twist on each appearance can also be found this season in accessories. Stella McCartney We have seen this from designers such Audrey scarf, £255 as Sophia Webster, Stella McCartney and Sophie Anderson. Sophia Webster’s inspiration for the SS16 collections was ‘underwater’ and her playful Lilico shoes feature a stunning combination of vivid blooms and coral – these truly are a must have for any fashionista. So whether in full statement big blooms top-to-toe (try the Stella daisy dress) or a subtle ditsy floral boho top (Etoile’s is perfect) toned down with jeans, the floral trend is perfect for Stella McCartney everyone. We love it! Daisy orange sleeveless dress, £725

Gateways headmistress speaks in New York Dr Tracy Johnson, headmistress of Gateways School in Harewood, was invited to speak at the Global Forum on Girls’ Education. Her session entitled ‘Blame my Brain – not me!’ looked at the very real physical and chemical changes that occur in the brains of prepubescent and pubescent children and how they manifest themselves in the usual ‘teenage yuk’. She now has invitations to present at schools in the USA, Canada and South Africa. Dr Johnson also had a personal tour of Yale University. This included an in-depth discussion regarding successful applications to study there, which will be of huge benefit to Gateways’ high achieving girls as they look towards the next stage of their educational journey.

NS Health

All in the mind

Taking control of your brain can help you control the problems affecting it, says Z Health’s Dr Sara Pugh.

W

hile traditional medicine and standard medical methods can solve many of the world’s ills, there are a significant number of health concerns that can be addressed – and often resolved – using alternative techniques. Dr Sara Pugh, a Leeds-based specialist in the nervous system, has years of experience in neurological health training, pain management and hypnotherapy. From migraines to IBS, joint pain to Parkinson’s – and many others – Sara helps people overcome the health issues that cause daily pain and suffering. Sara’s credentials are impressive – not only does she have a degree in biochemistry and genetics and a PhD in molecular biology and biophysics, but she is also a certified hypnotist, a qualified yoga teacher and has been teaching pilates for over seven years. Taking her fascination with the way the body works and moves to new heights, she left the world of science and academia to work as a movement and neurological therapist and has established an ever-growing client base. From her base at the Broadgate Clinic in Horsforth, she helps those in pain, stroke victims, athletes and expectant mothers with her unique approach to brain-based training and hypnosis. Her work is based around the idea that the nervous system controls everything in your body – taking control of it helps you to control the problems adversely affecting it. By using visual skills training, unique balance challenges, precise mobility work, non-traditional strength training exercises, sensory integration drills, cognitive exercises and many more techniques,

NS • page 42

Sara trains the nervous system to effectively change the way it operates. Common misconceptions surrounding hypnosis – that it is only used to make audience members do silly things on stage – mask its ability to heal a wide range of ailments. Sara harnesses this power to help her clients in numerous ways: increasing confidence, motivation, productivity, performance and goal achievements; promoting healthy weight loss; removing anxiety, phobias, bad habits, addictions and limiting beliefs; managing stress; improving sleep; managing pain; and stopping smoking.Working quickly to address these major concerns, Sara can resolve her clients’ issues in as little as three sessions. To find out more, read FAQs and see example videos of hypnosis in action, visit www.sarapughleeds.co.uk. Whether you’re looking to address a longstanding concern or would like to nip a newly developed health problem in the bud, Sara Pugh can offer relief. Call her on 07765 662579 or email info@sarapughleeds.co.uk to discuss your initial requirements or to book an appointment.

Words: Stephanie Burns

Renee Dickinson, chair for Harrogate Parkinson’s UK “Working with Sara Pugh I have found relief from the Parkinson’s symptoms that I had been displaying for years. I noticed improvements in my mobility, less dyskinesia (in my case a nodding head) and also help with balance and posture. Sara has some great ideas on improving the lives of Parkinson’s sufferers and I would recommend her work.”

NS Education

Sylvia Brett, Principal at Harrogate Ladies’ College on the benefits of an all-girl education.

A

rguably the single greatest benefit of a girls’ only education is the greater breadth of educational opportunity an allgirls classroom can create. Without the pressure of gender expectations, subject choices are not bound by gender stereotypes and pupils can enjoy a nurturing environment where they can thrive and become the best they can be. Sylvia Brett, Principal at Harrogate Ladies’ College says: “In an all-female environment there is less gender-based pressure when it comes to subject choice. Almost a third of all our sixth formers for example, study physics A-level, a subject that nationally attracts low numbers of girls. Research from the Girls’ Schools Association (GSA) actually suggests that girls are 75 per cent more likely to take maths and two-and-a-half times as likely to take physics in a single-sex school.” But Sylvia believes the benefits of a girls-only education at senior school stretch far beyond freedom in subject choice. “There is lots of research to suggest that girls and boys learn in different ways,” she says. “As a girls’ senior school,

NS • page 44

we understand girls and the way they learn and are able to adapt our teaching methods to suit their needs. We believe that this in turn enables our girls to learn more effectively and ultimately, to achieve better results.” Naturally, academic results are part of the reason for choosing a girls’ only senior school. But, as teenage life brings many pressures and uncertainties for girls, perhaps more so today than ever before, Sylvia believes an all-girl school can help to reduce some of these pressures. “It provides the girls with the freedom to be who they are; to take more risks; and to build greater confidence. They can know themselves better and develop resilience and self-awareness.” At Harrogate Ladies’ College, a girls’

senior school education doesn’t mean excluding boys from all parts of life and there are, of course opportunities for social interaction with boys. They do believe however, that girls work best and achieve more when they learn and develop alongside other girls. “As Principal of a girls’ only senior school I am totally focussed on delivering the very best education possible to our girls and to providing a safe and secure environment that allows them to be the very best that they can be. We understand just how critical senior school years are in terms of shaping longterm futures, but we believe that they should also be exciting, inspiring and stimulating – a time of building confidence, increasing independence; and of becoming comfortable with who you are. “At Harrogate Ladies’ College we focus on providing girls with an all-round education, which will ensure that they have the best possible opportunities when they move on to the next stage in their lives.”

Harrogate Ladies’ College more Where every girl achieves 2016 is a big year for the Regional Magazine Company (RMC) as we launch our 30th anniversary celebrations – and we are looking for other businesses who have managed to stand the test of time to join in the fun. Our story started way back in 1986 when the first copy of our first magazine, Westside, was published. We’ve grown considerably since then into a company that publishes nine monthly lifestyle and business titles across Yorkshire, North Notts and North Derbyshire, as well as publishing books for some of Great Britain’s most prestigious restaurants.

Girls only aged 11-18

We also have a strong online presence and we’ll be celebrating our 30th with a major relaunch of our website. 1986 was the year Prince Andrew married Sarah Ferguson, Gary Lineker set a UK transfer record when he moved to Barcelona for £2.75million, Margaret Thatcher opened the M25 and the first episode of Casualty was aired. Since then, as anyone who has been in business the same length of time will know, there have been good times as well as upsets, recessions and major changes across the world.

So, if you also set up your business in the year of 1986, congratulations on standing the test of time – and here’s a birthday gift from RMC for you. We are offering a free advert in one of our titles. There’s no catch – it’s as simple as that. Contact: jillion.wood@regionalmagazine.co.uk to find out more.

Spring

All Nature seems at work. Slugs leave their lair The bees are stirring, birds are on the wing, And Winter slumbering in the open air, Wears on his smiling face a dream of spring. Samuel Taylor Coleridge Spring gardens – where the magic happens Now that the cold winter months are finally behind us, it’s time to embrace the longer days and put our green fingers to good use. Whether you’re a beginner or an advanced gardener, you will know that spring is one of the busiest times and the need to prepare in advance is crucial. Here are some top tips to make sure you are on top of things for the spring months: Get rid of weeds. As the weather becomes warmer, your garden will start to feel alive again. The weeds that you dread to see covering your garden will start appearing, along with ivy and brambles on the base of hedges; get rid of them as soon as possible. Mow your lawn. You have probably been avoiding doing jobs in your garden over the cold winter period. If you haven’t cut your lawn yet, it is best to do so at the start of the spring months. Tie back trees. Trees and climbers that have been damaged from snow or frost can now be pushed back into shape; this will help them grow throughout the forthcoming months.

NS • page 50

After preparing your garden for springtime, you will be starting to think about making your garden colourful in time for the glorious summer months. What flowers shall I plant in the spring season? Pansies One of the best flowers to plant in spring. Usually placed in containers. They need to be planted in the sun or a spot partly in the shade in welldrained soil.

Lilacs Come in all shapes and sizes from shrubs to trees. They need full sun and well-drained soil to thrive in spring.

Daffodils They come in a variety of colours: Orange, white, yellow, orange-red and salmon. They also need full sun and well-drained soil to survive.

Dahlias Put the plants in pots at the beginning of spring inside, e.g a conservatory. The Dahlias will have grown to six-inch plants by May. Alternatively, if you do not wish to start the plants growing inside, wait approximately three weeks until the weather is warmer and frost is not as likely. Plant them in direct sunlight, deep into the soil so the tubers are sheltered from the cold. Support the stems by tying them to soft twine. Water them regularly in dry weather, and feed regularly over the summer months.

Popular vegetables to grow in your garden Growing your own vegetables can be very beneficial and cost saving. If you’re thinking about growing crops, the middle of April is the best time to ensure your veg are the tastiest they can be. Focus on how much space you have in your garden; this will tell you what you can grow. If space is limited, think about buying ‘dwarf selections’ or ‘patio’ vegetables. Carrots Best grown in the open ground and in hot weather. If the foliage starts wilting, water the carrots every ten days. Make sure you weed before planting; if you let weeds grow, they could overcrowd the carrots. Be careful when weeding that you don’t crush the foliage, the smell can attract carrot fly, which can lay eggs. Putting a barrier over the carrots can prevent this. Leaf lettuce Thin seedlings when leaves start to appear, proceed until the plants are 30cm apart. The plants need watering when the soil is dry in the mornings. Lettuce can attract sparrows, a barrier can prevent this. Onions To grow efficiently, they require a sunny, well-sheltered spot with fertilised soil. Best grown in open ground. Plant each onion 10cm apart. Stop watering and feeding once the onions have grown bigger. Birds can try and lift the skin of the onion at the top, before planting remember to remove the skin. Potatoes After the potatoes have been planted and the stems are 23cm high, it is essential that you start ‘earthing up’, dragging soil up covering the stems to produce a 15cm high range. ‘Earthing up’ is essential; it protects developing potatoes from a substance called light. Light potatoes are green in colour and are poisonous.

Keep it green and lush Every gardener takes pride in their lawn; however it can be hard to keep your grass looking green and healthy all year round. Spring is the best time to tend to your lawn. Here are some essential tips: • Fertilise in early spring to promote root development • Remove small amounts of soil to help your lawn aerate, this allows the water and fertiliser to infiltrate deeper into the soil. • Cutting your lawn to the correct height depends on the time of the year. In spring, use a one-inch cutting height to remove dead grass and allow light to penetrate the roots. In summer the cutting height can be raised to two or more inches. • To ensure your lawn is fresh for all seasons you should soak the grass rather than sprinkle lightly; a main reason for this is so the water gets to the deep roots.

Keep it trim At this busy time of year for gardeners, the final key task is pruning. This involves the cutting away of dead, overcrowded branches or stems of a bush or flower. The following plants need pruning in early spring: Ornamental grasses Tie the tops before cutting, it makes for an easier job. Cut the stems close to the ground. Perennials These can also be cut back anytime in winter. Cut back to four inches to generate stronger new stems. Evergreens Prune the stems with damaged foliage from the winter months. Flowers – Summer flowering trees, shrubs, vines, hydrangeas and roses Eliminate dead and damaged stems. Cut size as required. Â

Summer gardens – a time for relaxation and enjoyment After working hard over the spring planting, pruning and growing, summer should be a time of enjoyment. There is still work to do, but your garden is at its best, so make sure you find the time to sit back, relax and enjoy it. However, just before you start to cool off, you should check your plants and vegetable crops for diseases. You will notice that your spring vegetables are ready to harvest, but it is essential that you check your crops and plants for signs of contamination. Common diseases found in your vegetable gardens and plants Southern blight – The fungus that causes this attacks roots, stems and leaves that are under the surface of the soil. First you will notice a wilting of the foliage. A white fungus growth may appear next if the soil is warm and moist. As the disease progresses, all plants that are next to each other in a row will die. To try and prevent it, crop rotation for vegetables might stop the fungus from occurring. Leaf spots – They commonly affect many vegetables and can affect plants. These spots are caused by fungi or bacteria. They appear mainly on leaves of plants and sometimes on their stems. The spots are dark tan in colour. Applying fungicide can help control the bacteria and the spots effectively.

Here’s how to harvest the vegetables you planted in spring: Carrots They are ready to harvest, two to three months after they have been planted. Loosen the ground with a fork to check that they are big enough. Leaf lettuce This type of lettuce matures around 40 days after seeding. Harvest as soon as the leaves are big enough, around four to five inches long. Harvest the plant in the morning when the leaves are full of moisture. Onions As soon as the onions are big enough you can harvest them. Usually they will need harvesting in mid to late summer. Potatoes You can harvest your potatoes when they have reached the size you want. Use a fork to help lift the soil and take the tubers out by hand.

Top tips for keeping your garden looking vibrant When we think of summer, we think of a large colourful array of flourishing flowers and vibrant green grass in our gardens. Keeping outdoors looking its best requires care and attention. • Deadheads need to be removed regularly, this stimulates the growth of the plant • In the summer it is essential to keep flowers and plants watered. Water plants at the beginning and the end of the day; try to avoid watering the plants in mid-afternoon when the sun is at its strongest. • Keep on top of weeds, they can be removed easily when the weather is hot, therefore it’s easy to keep on top of weed growth in summer. • During the summer, we might see periods of dry weather; you can prevent your lawn from drying out by keeping it longer than usual. Applying a lawn fertiliser at the start of summer will limit the damage to your lawn. • After harvesting your crops and maintaining the keep of flowers and plants, your garden will be looking at its best. As soon as its summer time, spend as much time outdoors as possible; this summer it’s time to make it look and feel even better with some of 2016’s garden trends, suitable for all different types of gardens.

NS • page 54

Garden trends 2016 Bringing the indoors outdoors This years’ top gardening trend focuses on comfort, bringing furniture into our gardens like that inside our homes. New, contemporary, weather-resistant materials mean that you can achieve this style this summer. If you don’t wish to change your furnishings, keeping blankets outdoors on late summer evenings will also ensure a cozy surrounding, perfect for entertaining and socialising in summer months. LED fairy lights There is nothing better than adding a bit of sparkle to a garden party. Fairy lights are perfect for making your outside space look inviting when having friends over. These lights are perfect for decorating in bushes and trees and are perfectly safe for families. Animal nesting boxes, bird baths and feeders As well as bringing comfort outdoors, this year it’s about caring for our furry and feathered friends. Attracting wildlife into your garden can be exciting, especially if you have young children. Summer is a great time to interact with the wild creatures. Animal nesting boxes, bird baths and feeders will ensure that you can look after the wildlife this summer. Â

Summer is when we spend the majority of time in our gardens, whether it be spending time planting flowers, mowing the lawn or even doing a spot of sunbathing. We see spending time in our garden as a priority in the summer, so how much do we spend on our gardens looking the part?

• Brits spend on average £5.2billion on garden improvements • The average Briton has spent £1,280 improving their garden in the past year, adding an estimated £3,300 to their home’s value. • 39 per cent of Brits have revamped their outdoor space in the past few years. • 35 per cent have transformed their garden into a space for relaxation, 11 per cent have made it an extra living area and 6 per cent have created a garden with a parking area. • 28 per cent, 4.3 million people, have started creating their own vegetable patches.

Autumn and winter gardens – a time for preparation The colour of the leaves will start to change, days suddenly get shorter and wildlife will start to hibernate in a struggle to keep warm. Autumn and winter brings a quieter time in the garden; use this time to prepare for next year’s spring season. With the expected cold winter conditions, at the start of autumn you should start thinking about protecting your plants from the imminent frost. Protecting your plants from winter damage • Abstain from using fertilisers high in nitrogen; these encourage plants to make a sappy growth that is receptive to damage in the cold winter period. You can protect trees from shielding its base with a fleece, helping to keep the tree insulated from the cold weather. • Make sure your plant containers are frost proof. If you have a shed or greenhouse, place the plants and containers into there to stop the containers cracking over winter. If your plants do suffer from frost damage, there is no need to panic, most flowers do recover. Feed them with a fertiliser, balanced in equal amounts of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium to help speed up recovery.

Going outside in winter can be a struggle; it might be the only time that we’d rather stay inside by the fire. Below is a list of winter gardening clothing for when it’s that little bit too cold.

Foam kneelers with incorporated seats are great for if you are gardening for long periods of time, stopping pressure from hurting your knees whilst bending down to garden. Folding kneeler and seat (£29.95) from Harrod Horticultural is great for providing comfort when gardening. It is also fitted with arm supports for resting and getting up.

Winter gardening clothing and accessories... Thermal insoles are great if your feet get cold in your wellies. Thinsulate thermal insoles (£10.07) are designed for providing comfort as well as warmth for when you are outdoors.

Gloves are an absolute must-have for gardeners, no matter what the weather is. Gold Leaf winter touch gloves (£22.95) are endorsed by The Royal Horticultural Society and are highly recommended for keeping your hands insulated from icy conditions. Â

Capability Brown blueprint goes back to the future He is celebrated as England’s greatest gardener and credited with changing the face of our countryside – but what would Capability Brown make of today’s landscapes? Sheffield University student Jonathan Emery is about to provide the answer as he works to produce a Brown-style blueprint for one of Yorkshire’s bestknown landmarks. Jonathan, aged 20, is creating a new plan for the Great Yorkshire Showground, complete with many famous Capability characteristics, as part of an exhibition tracing the life and work of the legendary landscape architect to be launched at this year’s show. Capability Brown: A Man for All Seasons is part of the nationwide festival celebrating the 300th anniversary of Brown’s birth. The exhibition is sponsored by the North of England Horticultural Society and will focus on Brown’s history and style, what gardening was like in the 18th century and, importantly, how his design principles might be applied today. Jonathan, who comes from Macclesfield, is a third year landscape architecture student at Sheffield and was approached to take part in the project by organisers of the Capability Brown 300 Years Festival. In true Brown style, he plans to create a before and after design featuring a range of new paths and using trees to define classical view points over the rolling showground landscape. Existing buildings will remain in place, but will be screened by more strategically placed planting. Jonathan said: “I have tried to view the showground as Brown would have seen it and applied his principles to show people what he might have done with the site if he had been commissioned to do the job. “Capability Brown is the forefather of landscape architecture in this country and his holistic view of the landscape, using the existing countryside to define sweeping, naturalistic designs, still very much applies today.” The new exhibition has been created with the help of garden historian, Peter Goodchild, who will also be giving a talk on the life and legend of Capability Brown in the Dig It Garden Theatre each day of the show.

NS Gardening

Back on the map For all your gardening, foodie and retail needs, you’ll find everything under one roof at Tong Garden Centre.

W

hen childhood friends Mark Farnsworth and Tom Megginson took on Tong Garden Centre almost a year ago, they knew they had set themselves quite a challenge. After several years of underinvestment, the huge 17-acre site near Tong village was in need of some serious TLC. Happily, following a huge transformation and a year of considerable investment, hard work, and renovation, Tong is back on the map and at the heart of the local community. A visit to Tong today, one of Yorkshire’s largest independent garden centres, offers a fabulous day out for people from far and wide. First and foremost Tong remains a garden centre able to cater for all of your gardening and outdoor living needs, but now you will also find an excellent restaurant and adjoining coffee shop, impressive outdoor adventure play area and a much-improved retail offering. The expert plant team at Tong are extremely passionate about all things green and are always on hand to help should you need anything. Their buyers believe in keeping things as local as possible, so whether your basket is filled with Petunias or Pansies you can be sure – as with all of their bedding plants – that they have been grown right here in Yorkshire.

NS • page 64

From hanging baskets, climbers and fruits trees to beautiful beds, borders and grow your own, whether you’re simply brightening up your space or establishing a garden for the future, all you could ever need is under one roof at Tong. It’s reassuring to know that their hardy plants are all guaranteed to grow and come with a lifetime guarantee too. And, if you’re stuck for design ideas, their impressive seasonal displays are filled with inspiration to help you create your very own outdoor paradise. If you’re looking for a little more than plants and shrubs, Tong offer one of Yorkshire’s largest selections of furniture for gardens, patios and conservatories. They are also stockists of the ever-popular Weber barbecues, which provide the perfect excuse to get friends and family together and enjoy some delicious food, all in the surroundings of your bright and beautiful garden. Speaking of tasty treats, the beautifully renovated Orchard Kitchen and the new coffee shop have become tremendously popular in their own right. Whether you are meeting friends, grabbing a cup of handcrafted coffee or starting the day with a hearty breakfast, you can enjoy delicious seasonal dishes all served with a smile. The coffee shop offers a light menu and an enviable choice of cakes while the Orchard Kitchen features delicious home-cooked

dishes including juicy burgers, hearty pies and soups, freshly prepared every day by their team of experienced chefs. All of their meat is prepared onsite by award-winning farm shop and bakers William’s Farm Kitchen and, you can also take home something delicious from their range of exceptional local produce. While both the restaurant and café are family friendly, Grasshoppers outdoor adventure playground is ideal to while away a few hours with the little ones. Set in a secure environment and featuring a zip wire, giant jumping pillow, huge sandpit, and coin-operated racing cars, it’s no surprise it is proving to be a family favourite. There’s plenty on offer for adults too, and if you feel like some retail therapy, relax and spend some time browsing new shops in store including Bonmarché, Maidenhead Aquatics and Mountain Warehouse. For all your gardening, foodie and retail needs, or simply a great day out with the family, this independent garden centre has everything you could want. Transformed from a tired and dated garden centre almost a year ago to a thriving destination today, there’s no denying this independent garden centre has an exciting future ahead. T

he team at Doug Cleghorn Bathrooms not only have years of sales experience, but technical backgrounds in the bathroom and tile industry too. Doug Cleghorn established the business in Leeds over 15 years ago. Following in his father’s footsteps, Doug Jnr started out as a qualified plumber, fitting bathrooms, before joining the family business. This quickly grew into a well-established and reputable company and eventually, Doug Jnr took over as managing director. The company now offers three main services for customers to choose from – supply-only products (for both retail and trade customers), a design service, and a complete project-managed installation from concept to completion. But whatever service you are looking for, you can be sure that Doug and his team will provide high-end branded fittings by trusted manufacturers and bathrooms built to last. “A quality bathroom should last between 15 and 20 years,” says Doug. “That’s why we offer an installation guarantee on top of your standard manufacturers guarantee.” Doug Cleghorn Bathrooms provide every fitting from basins and baths, to tiles and flooring with affordable, mid to high-end designer brands including Laufen and Vado. Their friendly team can help you design the bathroom of your dreams, whilst matching your style and budget. Whether you’ve always

Protect your home the smart way... with Finite Solutions.

Y

our home is your castle as they say but these days we don’t have the moat and a drawbridge to keep unwanted visitors at bay. But when planning that well-deserved family break there are alternative solutions. There is now a growing number of gadgets that can help protect your house and everything inside it. So whether it’s just a case of keeping an eye on your pets whilst you’re at work or detecting when someone steps foot on your driveway, there are some brilliant options on the market. Security-boosting devices include smart lighting systems that mimic your typical household lighting usage pattern while you’re away, automated smoke-releasing generators, cameras with facial and number plate recognition, and sensors that learn your behaviour and notify you when something out of the ordinary happens. All of them can be linked to your mobile phone via integrated smart home controllers. Oliver Lisles of Leeds based Finite Solutions advises: “Nothing concerns us more than the fear of someone breaking into our own home, yet very few homeowners know about an intruder until they are already inside. A simple burglar alarm system is no

longer a good enough warning or deterrent. Research commissioned by GoCompare last year concluded that over three-quarters of Brits ignore burglar alarm sirens on neighbours’ homes. “A bespoke smart home solution can provide the fantastic benefits of intelligent entertainment and lighting but it can also provide peace of mind. It allows you to see, hear and check on your home at all times and warns you of the presence of an intruder as soon as they step foot in your garden. “A good integrated home security system can be automated to arm/disarm itself through sensors inside and outside the house. Smart home systems also provide a view of the CCTV cameras and door entry systems, allowing you to remotely open the door and let people in. “An exterior perimeter heat or mass based detection system surrounding a property will warn whenever an intruder steps foot in your grounds by displaying CCTV footage on your TV screens and giving you early warning of a problem before the intruder ever reaches the property. “The smart integration of security systems also extends beyond in-house control. Thanks to the latest bespoke security

solutions, our clients are able to monitor their home security remotely. Dedicated iPhone and iPad apps offer access to the home automation alarm system remotely and this provides an extra level of security and peace of mind by instantly displaying CCTV images on your phone and activating lighting inside and outside the property to give the impression you are at home and even giving you the ability to ‘shout out’ to intruders via exterior speakers to inform them police have been called.” Finite Solutions has a show house in Leeds dedicated to showcase integrated smart home technology and security as described above. NS Eating Out

Full of charm

Staying true to its original values has been the key to Sukhothai’s successful expansion, as Chris Wilson discovered.

M

y first Sukhothai experience was a decidedly intimate affair. As those who visited the earliest venture in the Leeds suburb of Chapel Allerton will recall, stepping into head chef and owner Ban Kaewkraikhot’s tiny restaurant was a bit like stepping into a neighbour’s home... if that neighbour happened to wear Thai national dress and offer knockout food from their homeland. It was cosy, friendly and – best of all – while the menu may not have been massive, the food was immaculate and bursting with authentic Thai flavours. That was back in 2002 and we have moved on considerably since those early days. The original restaurant has expanded to more than twice its original size and there are three more sizeable venues all bearing the Sukhothai name – Headingley, Leeds city centre and Harrogate – all offering a large and varied menu. We all know that bigger does not necessarily mean better, but my recent visit to the Harrogate restaurant proved that the charms that won me over in the early years – a friendly greeting, immaculate décor and delicious Thai food – had not been lost. The Sukhothai experience is bigger, but it is still like being greeted by a long-lost friend. And so, after cheery smiles and the prompt arrival of drinks, we set about the formidable task of selecting from a mouthwatering selection of curries, stir-fries and specials.

NS • page 80

Seafood lovers may find the simplest option is to start with one of the mixed platters; the fishy version contains a generous selection of satay fish, prawn skewers, squid in batter and mussels. With spicy and satay dipping sauces on the side, this was a suitably impressive and wide-ranging introduction to Thai cuisine. For mains, most Thai restaurants have their own version of Weeping Tiger, a sirloin steak that is marinated, grilled and served on a sizzling hot platter in special sauce. The Sukhothai version was succulent with just the right amount of chew – savoury, slightly spicy and delicious. We notched up the heat level slightly with our second main course, chicken gata lon. This stir-fry dish with garlic, black pepper, lime leaves, oyster sauce, lemongrass, onion, fresh chilli and crispy basil was bursting with clean, fresh flavours. Side dishes are a vital component of any Thai meal and since the sauces are never too heavy or thick, sticky rice and soft noodles were a perfect accompaniment and, just to add one last hit of sharp, crunchy goodness, a spicy salad with shredded papaya, chilli, peanuts and dried shrimp really hit the spot. Rounding things off nicely, two traditional Thai desserts – fresh mango with sticky sweet rice and banana in batter with ice-cream – sent us contentedly into the Harrogate night. The only slight annoyance was that there were so many dishes left untried, but Sukhothai is an old friend we will be calling on again soon.

What we ate: Starter Mixed seafood platter, £9.95pp Mains Weeping tiger, £15.95 Chicken gata lon, £10.95 Sides Spicy Thai salad, £6.95 Thai sticky rice £3.15 Soft rice noodles, bean sprouts & egg, £3.35 Desserts Banana in batter with vanilla ice-cream, £4.95 Mango with sticky sweet rice, £4.95 Drinks Chang beer, £3.75 Sauvignon Blanc, £4.75 Double espresso, £2.25 Irish coffee, £3.75 Sukhothai 19 Cheltenham Parade, Harrogate, HG1 1DD Tel: 01423 500869 www.sukhothai.co.uk

It’s all in the mix Fiona Barber discovers the Spirit of Harrogate, the gin experts on a mission to help you relax, indulge and socialise.

T

he days of just ice and a slice are over – you need to try a little harder than that,” the co-owner of Slingsby Gin, Marcus Black, concluded as I sipped on a refreshing gin and tonic. Mixologist Alex Hanson agreed: “You need to garnish your gin with something elegant and relevant to bring out the flavour.” They were right – the balloon glass filled with a generous serving of ice, Fever-Tree Mediterranean tonic water, and a double shot of Slingsby, and garnished with blueberries and pink grapefruit peel was sublime. This was the first of several G&Ts, and just one of the many things I learned at the gin tasting experience at the Spirit of Harrogate – the home of Slingsby Gin. Marcus and long-time business partner Mike Carthy, who have 20 years’ experience in the alcoholic drinks business with InterContinental Brands Limited, wanted to create a product that captured the essence of Harrogate. Marcus says: “Why do people come to Harrogate? From 1571 to the modern day, they come to relax, indulge or socialise – or more often, for all three.” This once little-known hamlet became the place to go to relax and revitalise after William Slingsby

www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

discovered the Tewit Well. People believed that drinking water from such a well would heal sicknesses – in the 20th century the NHS even sent people to the Royal Baths to cure many ills. Slingsby was known as a man who thought and did things differently and was the perfect name to represent the brand. With 24 carefully chosen botanicals, half of which are grown in Harrogate’s Rudding Park Hotel kitchen garden and include grapefruit, rhubarb, nettle, primrose, green tea and sweet cicely, Harrogate spring water and pure single grain spirit, Slingsby Gin was born. This London dry gin – with its refreshing rhubarb and citrus flavours – proved an instant hit with consumers, but Marcus and Mike wanted to offer customers much more and so, the Spirit of Harrogate opened its doors on Montpellier Parade. Here, customers can enter into the world of Slingsby Gin. Downstairs offers a fabulous collection of flavoured gins and over 30 tonics to match. Meanwhile, an upstairs room featuring wall displays perfectly captures the history of Harrogate, gin, Slingsby and Slingsby Gin. Finally, the bar area, with a large rustic wooden table, a living wall, and a fully stocked bar, is where private parties of 10-16 people can experience gin as never before; learn about its fascinating history, enjoy a selection of cocktails and gin and tonics and

have a go at creating their own (I was delighted my elderflower gin martini went down a storm). Mixologists Alex and George (Marcus' son) tailor the classes to suit each group, so regardless of whether you are a complete novice, or a real gin enthusiast, it's guaranteed you will have a great time and learn something new. Gin tasting sessions last around two and a half hours and cost £40 per person, which includes four drinks – although they are always happy to keep glasses topped up – and delicious canapés provided by Wild Restaurant just down the road. As well as a social experience, the Spirit of Harrogate is also popular as a training venue for bar and restaurant staff looking to expand their gin knowledge. “This was all about doing something, which represents the town in which we live and work. Even more so,Yorkshire has a fantastic history of top-quality food and drink products and we wanted to continue that history,” Marcus says. “We are all about creating an environment where people can relax, indulge and socialise as well as learning a bit about the history of gin.” To book your private party or to find out more call 01423 541279. NS Entertainment

Give it some oompah! For a foot-stomping night out, head for the Bierkeller and get the party started.

I

f you’re fortunate enough to have been chosen as a best man or bridesmaid you’ll be feeling rather honoured. But with this privileged duty comes the significant – and often stressful – task of organising the stag or hen do. Music, entertainment, and delicious food and drink are all key element of a successful party. But to make sure it’s truly special, choosing a venue that can offer something a little bit different will guarantee it’s one to remember Bierkeller at Sovereign House on South Parade, Leeds is the only Bavarian-themed bar in the city, and the only place you will get real German beer in steins, all served ice cold to your table by waitresses in classic Bavarian dress. Why have one pint in a glass when you can have two? There are a number of different packages available, to cater for various parties and prices range from £10-£20 per person. For £10 you can enjoy a pretzel, shot, guaranteed seating and waitress service, £15 entry includes a pretzel, shot, stein (either lager, cider or cocktail), guaranteed prime seating and waitress service, and £20 entry includes a pretzel, shot, stein, Bavarian meal, best seats in the house and waitress service. On top of this, you can add many different options to your table,

from a spirit bottle with mixers to their famous five-litre table-top kegs. They offer a wide range of lagers, beers, ciders, spirits, shots and new stein cocktails. Why not try the stag and stein special – Jägermeister and a stein – ideal for a stag party. As well as fabulous food and drink, the Bierkeller offers extraordinary entertainment. The amazing Bavarian Stompers play at the bar every Friday and Saturday night and will have you up on your feet – or in most cases, the benches – in no time. They have a reputation as the best British oompah band and in fact, were the first British comedy oompah band to appear at a major German bier festival. Their tremendous vitality and enthusiasm has made them exceptionally popular, and

their show gives audiences a rip-roaring musical journey to the Bavarian Bierkellers, involving the quaffing of liquid refreshment en route. An evening with the Bavarian Stompers starts from 7pm. The Bierkeller’s lovely waitresses make sure everyone’s steins are kept topped up and there’s plenty of music, party games and competitions. By 9pm everyone is in the party spirit and the Bavarian Stompers take you on a journey through the Bierkellers of Germany with their amazing live show. Once the band has finished, the party doesn’t stop there. Party music, shot girls, a sing-a-long and audience participation continues until they close with their resident DJ. Make sure to book in advance, this is a night out you don't want to miss. Whether it's a stag or hen do, an office party, birthday or Christmas celebration, the Bierkeller can cater for everyone. As well as a great party venue, the Bierkeller’s relaxed sociable atmosphere is the ideal place to wind down after a hard day’s work. Or, if you’re looking for a special wine or beer tasting, one of their events will give you a sample of what’s on offer as well as an insight into one of the greatest drinking destinations. NS Travel One Harbour Road restaurant

Grand Deluxe Harbour room at the Grand Hyatt

The Star Ferry and Hong Kong skyline

Where East meets West Receive a Grand welcome in Hong Kong, the tallest city in the world.

W

elcome to the tallest city in the world – where ferries bob beneath the most spectacular skyline the world has to offer, neon-fuelled lights bombard you from every angle, the aroma of deep-fried goodness wafts off every street corner and where the world passes around you seemingly quicker than anywhere else in the world. For so long ruled by the British, Hong Kong has always been one of the world’s gleaming examples of a marriage between east and west – an unmistakable quality that is still manifested in the colonial gems dotted around the city. Hong Kong remains a destination for every type of tourist – from shopaholics and culture fiends to worldly foodies and nature lovers… and for lovers of city urbanscapes, which is where every visitor should start. And there’s no better springboard for seeing the sights than The Grand Hyatt Hotel, situated at 1 Harbour Road and conveniently placed for the nearby Star Ferry, linking Hong Kong Island and Kowloon. The Grand Hyatt is a luxurious haven, described in the New York Times as a “world famous prestige property”. Not without good reason. After sweeping up the drive past landscaped gardens, and being welcomed by liveried doormen and bellboys, the opulent lobby, with its marble columns and spiral staircases, announce that you have arrived somewhere special. The public areas are spacious and immaculate, the ultra professional staff are super willing to please, and the room service is polished. The rooms themselves are modern and many have been

www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

completely refurbished, with a cool contemporary feel and magnificent harbour views. Each room is equipped with a useful smartphone, with free international calls for the duration of your stay. A grand staircase sweeps from the lobby to the Grand Ballroom, in house chocolatier and the Tiffin Lounge, serving outstanding breakfasts and afternoon teas. There’s a superb choice of restaurants, including the elegant One Harbour Road, with wonderful views across the harbour, the world class Grand Hyatt Steak House, Grissini Italian Diner, and a slinky Champagne Bar with nightly jazz music. The graceful and soothing hotel spa, Plateau, has a range of excellent treatments, realistically priced and administered by fantastic therapists. The state of the art fitness centre leads to a resort-like 50-metre outdoor pool, sun terraces and pool bar. It’s actually difficult to step outside the hotel to explore the plethora of sights that await. But explore you must. For a taste of old Hong Kong, the Star Ferry is an iconic service

which began in 1888 and for just 25p have a fun and breezy crossing. Take a lazy ride on one of the city’s trams. These double-decker wonders are a leftover of the colonial past, and run across the northern strip of Hong Kong Island. You could never sample ALL the tea in China… but try the incredible high tea at the iconic and oh so plush Peninsula Hotel. Luk Yu Tea House has been tending to diners since 1933, offering impressively good service, a variety of teas and excellent dim sum, in surroundings reminiscent of a Shanghai mansion. The Upper House, a chic and exclusive Swire Properties hotel, close to Pacific Place, houses the fabulous Café Gray Deluxe,
