Pay as you go 2015 and 2016 have seen marked growth in the number of people without private medical insurance choosing to pay for treatment in a private hospital. Suzanne Wynne-Jones, business development manager at Spire Leeds Hospital in Roundhay explains some of the factors driving this growth.
T
here are many reasons why an increasing number of people are opting to self-pay for private hospital treatment.
Suzanne explained: “Probably the most compelling reason is speed of treatment. Rather than waiting many weeks or even months for first appointments and elective surgery in the NHS, patients can simply phone or email a private hospital such as Spire Leeds and book an appointment to see a consultant specialist within a matter of days. Often, they do not even need a GP referral. At the appointment, patients can then arrange rapid appointments for any tests, scans, physiotherapy or surgery “As with many things, having a choice is also crucial; people like to be able to choose which hospital to come to, which consultant to see, when to have an appointment and especially when to have surgery. The cost of private hospital treatment is often more affordable than they think, with out-patient consultations starting from £150. “Undoubtedly another factor is now the restriction in some of the services that the NHS provides. In some parts of our region for example, varicose vein surgery is often no longer widely offered and many people only have the option of paying privately”.
Suzanne Wynne-Jones, Business Development Manager at Spire Leeds Hospital
Considering self-pay? Ask our specialist team Spire Leeds has a dedicated team of three Private Patient Advisors who are able to help enquirers in a range of ways. They are able to: • Provide guidance on which areas each consultant specialises in.
According to a recent survey by the Health Service Journal, more than a third of Clinical Commissioning Groups (NHS organisations set up to organise the delivery of services in England) are considering further limits on access or eligibility for services in the coming year.
• Give basic information on procedures and tests.
Suzanne added: “The reputation of the hospital and consultants also plays a significant part in influencing the decision on whether to pay for treatment and where to come. At Spire Leeds, we pride ourselves on our excellent clinical standards and 26-year heritage. All consultants hold or have held consultant posts in NHS hospitals and many have national and international reputations.”
• Liaise with consultant secretaries as necessary.
• Arrange appointments. • Give information on the costs of diagnostic tests and treatment. • Provide details of our medical loan scheme. • Provide information on how soon surgery/test/scans can be done. • Arrange a tour of the hospital for patients and families. • Give tips on if and when a GP referral letter is required. • Put patients in touch with others who have had similar treatment and are happy to share their experience.
Spire Leeds Hospital, Jackson Avenue, Roundhay, Leeds, LS8 1NT.
A-Z of services at Spire Leeds Hospital
Advantages to choosing private healthcare • You do not have to wait – you can usually book a first appointment to see a consultant within 24 hours and you can usually arrange a scan or surgery within days if you wish. • You are under the care of a consultant who is a specialist in their field and who will be the same specialist seeing you at each consultant clinic visit. • We pride ourselves on looking after our patients as patients but also as important customers and we will help organise your care from the first contact you make with us. • You choose when you come for your appointments, tests, surgery or follow-ups. • You benefit from the reassurance of being in a large, multi-specialty hospital with 300 specialist consultants. • You can have most tests/surgery at the same hospital here without the need to travel to another site or hospital. • You can have procedures with us which may no longer be available on the NHS (examples include varicose vein treatment, benign mole or blemish removal, weight loss surgery and others). • Recovery times may be improved with personalised, frequent and timely physiotherapy rehabilitiation sessions. • You can be referred from one specialist to another directly and quickly. • Our car parking is extensive and free and there are excellent public transport links to the hospital here in Roundhay.
If you would like further information on any procedure, test or paying for your treatment, please email info@spireleeds.com or call our patient advisors on 0113 218 5967 or 0113 218 5977

TOUR DE YORKSHIRE Image courtesy Alex Broadway / SWPix
FOR THOSE UNACCUSTOMED TO THE INS AND OUTS OF COMPETITIVE BICYCLE RACING, THIS GUIDE PROVIDES A FEW THINGS TO KEEP YOUR EYE OUT FOR, IN WHAT CAN APPEAR TO BE A VERY CONFUSING FORMAT.
Image courtesy Allan McKenzie / SWPix
THE JERSEYS Being crowned the winner of the Tour de Yorkshire won’t be every rider’s primary agenda, with cyclists racing as part of a team to prime their strongest rider overall for a
shot at the title. Across the weekend, riders therefore compete for a number of different coloured jerseys according to their riding style.
The Leader’s Jersey The Leader’s Jersey will be awarded to the first rider across the line in Scarborough. After the end of Stage Two and Stage Three, the jersey will be awarded to the rider with the lowest accumulative time across each of the stages. The winner of the Tour de Yorkshire will be the rider who completes each stage in the fastest time across all three stages.
The Digital Jersey Unique to the Tour de Yorkshire is the podium jersey, which is voted for by fans via Twitter. The Digital Jersey is awarded to the rider who distinguishes themselves as the most aggressive rider, the rider who makes the most effort, as well as the rider who demonstrates the best qualities in terms of sportsmanship across each of the stages.
Sprint Jersey The green Sprint Jersey is worn by the rider who accumulates the most points across each of the intermediate sprints. For the first rider across the line at each intermediate sprint, 20 points will be awarded, with 17 points for second place, 15 for third, 13 for fourth and 11 for fifth.
King of the Mountain Jersey Like the sprinters jersey, the polka-dot King of the Mountain Jersey follows a similar format to the sprinters, with points up for grabs for the first riders to cross the line in the designated mountain climbs.
THE TEAMS & RIDERS Yet to be confirmed – but local girl Lizzie Deignan (née Armistead) will return to have another shot at the title. Thomas Voeckler has also confirmed that he is returning to defend his crown, as he competes in his final race on British soil after announcing that he will retire after this year’s Tour de France. Road racing is packed full of twists and turns (quite literally) with drama that can be expected throughout the day.Yet this can be confusing with lots of different tactics that riders will employ. Here’s what you need to know: The Peloton
Originally from the French meaning platoon, the peloton is the largest body of riders in a road cycling race. Due to the huge numbers of riders in the pack, the peloton offers riders the chance to conserve energy, by drafting and slipstreaming cycling as close as possible to the rider in front.
The strongest teams will each be vying to control the front of the peloton, as this is where the pace of the race is set, as well as being the prime position for a team to launch a surprise attack. Look out for Team Sky as they control the peloton, picking up the pace towards the end of each stage as they prime their lead rider for the final push. Breakaways and Attacks
Tactics in tour racing are just as important as the cycling itself – it’s not just about riding as fast as you can all of the time. In the early stage of the race a small group of riders, often in a group of three to six, break away from the peloton in an attempt to put as much distance between themselves and the peloton as possible, as they try to win the stage from the start. Breakaways rarely contain overall contenders, with the peloton often happy to let them get as far as ten minutes ahead,
relatively confident that they will catch them. Attacks on the other hand often take place on the classified climbs throughout the stage with one rider breaking from the group entirely, hoping that other riders will not be able to maintain pace with him. The climb through Robin Hood’s Bay may be the perfect opportunity on Stage One, giving riders a short distance to the finish if they manage to mount a successful attack. Sprints and ‘Lead-out Trains’
Some teams are purely built around their sprinters with Mark Cavendish’s Team Dimension Data being the prime example. In the run up to the finish or an intermediate sprint, a lead-out train will often be created as a team guides their sprinter through the front of the pack where he can break out from behind his final lead-out man, slipstreaming him to conserve his energy before a sprint. STAGE ONE – Bridlington to Scarborough Stage length: 173km King of the Mountain Climbs: Garrowby Hill, Goathland and Robin Hood’s Bay Sprints: Pocklington and Whitby Abbey Total ascent: 1,940m
he opening stage of the 2017 Tour de Yorkshire once again returns to Bridlington, with the peloton departing from outside Bridlington Spa. Spectators can expect a slow start as the riders meander through the scenic villages of East Yorkshire, visiting the historic Burton Agnes hall on their way to Driffield, in preparation for the first sprint of the day. The market town of Pocklington will provide the location for the first intermediate sprint of the weekend and will be a hotspot for fans who want to see some of the world’s best sprinters battle it out for the coveted green jersey. For a great vantage point of East Yorkshire and a chance to see the rider’s tough it out on one of the gruelling classified hill climbs. Garrowby Hill provides one of the best viewing points, offering a chance to see the peloton up close as the battle to be crowned King of the Mountains commences. Spectators will need to arrive early as road closures will be in place. Stage One will be in full swing as riders rapidly descend from Garrowby Hill, heading towards the market town of Malton, and as legs begin to tire at the end of the first stage the peloton heads back towards Whitby, providing the backdrop for some of the most spectacular images of the day. A sprint will commence outside Whitby Abbey before riders race to Robin Hood’s Bay for the day’s final climb. With legs burning and the leader’s jersey up for grabs, Stage One finishes in Scarborough, as riders race to the finish line along the North Bay.

TOUR DE YORKSHIRE
STAGE TWO – Tadcaster to Harrogate Stage length: 122.5km King of the Mountain Climb: Côte de Lofthouse Sprints: Knaresborough and Ripon Total ascent: 1,638m Viewing hub: Ripon Racecourse
tarting on the newly opened Tadcaster Bridge, Stage Two of the Tour de Yorkshire will be a day for sprinters, with only one classified climb at the mid-point of the stage. Stage Two will also share the same route as the Yorkshire women’s race, run earlier in the day, passing through some of North Yorkshire’s bestloved market towns. After leaving Tadcaster, the peloton will make its way through Wetherby before heading to Knaresborough for the day’s first intermediate sprint. Riders will then make their way through Ripley, Pateley Bridge and Ramsgill. The sole categorised climb of the day comes on the newly named Côte de Lofthouse, better known as Trapping Hill. This could arguably be one of the climbs to shape the race, as riders’ battle against a savage ascent that will really test the burning legs of the peloton. Snaking its way to a summit that could provide a spring board for a decisive attack as the sprinters fade away. After a rapid descent into Masham, it’s on to Ripon for the second intermediate sprint of the day, and, as well as having a usual weekend race meeting, Ripon Racecourse will also offer a dedicated screening. Gates open at 11.30am for those wanting to catch all of the day’s action. As the penultimate stage reaches its culmination, the race will skirt around the stunning Fountains Abbey before a rapid approach to Harrogate, the location for the final sprint finish. The day’s action will reach its crescendo amongst a huge crowd as riders’ race along Parliament Street, just as they did in the opening stage of the 2014 Tour de France.
S
On route: Knaresborough With a striking viaduct built across the beautiful waters of the river Nidd, Knaresborough is perhaps one of Yorkshire’s most beautiful market towns – built into the river bank and topped with its very own castle. Whether you want to boat on the river or meander through the town’s shops and eateries, there are a number of ways to pass the time before the arriving caravan and peloton. Ripon The medieval city of Ripon will be buzzing with a range of activities throughout the day, focused on the market square. With local traders and community organisations holding a community fair and local cafes and shops joining in the celebrations. Masham Located in the stunning region of Lower Wensleydale, Masham is gearing up for the cycling festivities. Aside from the Black Sheep Brewery for the real ale lovers, Masham provides the perfect location for an afternoon ramble into the Yorkshire Dales, once the peloton has passed through.

STAGE THREE – Bradford to Fox Valley Stage length: 194.5km King of the Mountain Climbs: Silsden, Haworth, Leeming, Shibden Wall, Deepcar, Wigtwizzle, Ewden Height and Midhopestones Sprints: Brighouse and Stocksbridge Total ascent: 3,517m
tage Three is undoubtedly a day for climbers, with eight climbs marking the toughest stage in the history of the Tour de Yorkshire. Aptly named ‘The Yorkshire Terrier’, Stage Three will briefly join the 2014 Tour de France route as riders pass through Burley-in-Wharfedale, before heading to the iconic Bolton Abbey in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales. Riders will roll out of City Park in Bradford as part of a procession that will also pass through the World Heritage Site of Saltaire, taking in Salts Mill before the flag is lowered and the final stage of racing officially commences. The peloton will move towards Skipton for the first of eight categorised climbs being contested on the Côte de Silsden, quickly followed by a second climb, up through the centre of Haworth – a fantastic location for supporters who want to embrace the true spirit of the race – before climbing the mighty Shibden Wall on their way to Halifax. With gradients of 15 per cent and 20 per cent on this perilous climb, riders will be battling against searing legs, gravity and monstrous cobbles – spectators can expect crashes, breakaways, punctures and sheer exhaustion. Just make sure you turn up early to grab the best spots on the hill. There’s no let-up for riders on the ‘Yorkshire Terrier’ as the race then traverses from West to South Yorkshire and Sheffield, heading towards Penistone and Stocksbridge for the second intermediate sprint of the day. Riders will then embark on a 22km finishing circuit that features no less than four gruelling climbs, separating the strong from the weak in a circuit that will surely be the defining moment for the rider who claims the winner’s jersey. The weekend’s racing will draw to a close at Fox Valley where huge crowds are expected to welcome a peloton of exhausted riders, before the presentation of the jerseys.

On Route: Saltaire Saltaire is steeped in rich cultural heritage and was a model industrial village, built for the local factory workers. With a range of parks, cafes and independent shops, this World Heritage Site is a great place to base yourselves for the start of the day’s racing. Haworth Home to the famous Brontë sisters, Haworth is renowned for its famous cobbled streets and vintage charm. With a traditional sweet shop, apothecary, Brontë Parsonage Museum and some great local pubs, it’s not just the racing that will draw in the crowds. Penistone As the race heads into South Yorkshire it will pass through Penistone, the highest market town in the country, and with the caravan arriving at approximately 3pm, there are plenty of things to do in the surrounding area beforehand. 14 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

CIRCUIT ONE
CIRCUIT TWO
ROUTE NOTES: The 100km route starts with a tough early climb up the locally renowned Pea Royd Lane, before joining the pro route for a section on Hunshelf Hall Lane. After another climb away from Millhouse Green it’s a long descent into Holmfirth. Riders will then head towards Meltham, requiring them to conquer the hill at Netherthong, before heading through an undulating section featuring the villages of Honley and Farnley Tyas. During the next part of the route riders will take on another tough uphill section, this time leading to the Emley Moor transmitting station, whose tower is the tallest freestanding structure in the UK. Other highlights include a descent to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, passing the spectacular Cannon Hall before visiting Silkstone and Silkstone Common. Riders then take on the same roads as the professionals again as they go through Wortley and into Deepcar, before they face an epic climb from Ewden Village, which is sure to test even the strongest of riders. After a section through Wigtwizzle follows the last notable climb up to Bolsterstone, before the triumphant descent to the finish at Fox Valley. Shortly after the amateur riders finish, the final stage of the Tour de Yorkshire pro race will also conclude at Fox Valley, allowing participants and their supporters to stay and watch the exciting finale first hand.
CIRCUIT THREE
The exact distance for the 100km is 101km and routes may be subject to change. Any rider taking part in the long route will be required to maintain an average speed of 15kph. This ride takes in 1,947m of climbing and requires riders to have a very good level of fitness to maintain the necessary average speed.

Feel the power E-BIKE OR REGULAR – IT’S AN E-ASY CHOICE AT SPECIALIZED CONCEPT STORE.
E
lectric bikes have been subject to ambivalence for about as long as they’ve existed. They came onto the scene in the 1990s as city bikes with wacky designs that were far removed from traditional bikes. Diehard cyclists left them to it for a while, content for city slickers and recreational riders to carry on with their faux-Dutch motorised bicycles, meanwhile continuing to bomb around the countryside on regular mountain and road bikes. However, the first E-bike successfully impregnated the cycling industry and their powerful genes have led to surprising outcomes. On mainland Europe, the acceleration of E-bike sales has exceeded all other cycling products in recent years. While the bikes in question have largely been considered commuter fare, the technology is making its way steadily onto the MTB trails and weekend club rides. At first a huge hit with the older and less fit riders while enthusiasts passed them off as cheating, we’re starting to see an interest in E-bikes even in the higher echelons of our sport. Now, there’s really no reason to choose a regular bike over an E-bike. E-bikes have been identified as a tool which can help even the most expert rider to cover more ground with each ride. If you are an amateur mountain biker who wants to enjoy everything that the trails have to offer with a sense of adventure and no desire to 16 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk
race, you should consider the Turbo Levo in place of any more traditional trail bike. The Specialized Turbo Levo FSR range feature Premium M5 aluminium frames and the same motor units across all models, although the S-Works model has an upgraded battery. They are all equipped with SRAM 1x11 drivetrains and Guide 4-piston brakes. The Turbo Levo range offers three assist settings, controlled by LED-stripped buttons on the down tube: Turbo, Trail and Eco. Clicking through the options allow the rider to tailor the power assist depending on the sort of ride you’re after. If you want a heavy workout with limited power assist, the Eco setting is the one you’re after. If you need the
help up short climbs on a short and intense ride, go for Turbo for an unparalleled ride experience. Even the most vehement opponents of Ebikes could not deny that the addition of an e-assist motor aboard a MTB has the very real advantage of making more obstacles ridable for longer. Specilized’s own Sean Estes says of riding an eMTB, especially on your familiar local trails, is “like fast forwarding through the commercials.” Gone are the days of tedious uplifts and fatigued calves. A Turbo Levo extends your riding potential, the terrain accessible and provides endless fun (within battery life). Contrary to popular belief, riding an E-bike is still a workout for enthusiasts and a skillslesson for beginners. The guys over at Bikeradar say that “While many scoff at the idea of an e-bike, it is worth noting that you still get a killer workout and one that you can adjust the level of electronic assist to your liking.” Experienced mountain bikers can cover more ground and conquer bigger ledges and climbs than before and beginners can focus on skills rather than worrying about fitness. The Turbo Levo is one of a kind in its versatility across an unprecedented spectrum of riders. The Edinburgh Bicycle Coop is a one stop shop for all your cycling needs.
B
ack in 1977, three bike nuts came together to open a workers’ co-operative bicycle shop in Edinburgh. They believed that working as a co-operative was a fairer way of doing things. They thought it would be better to build a company where the workers had an equal say in the business. Four decades on, the Bike Co-op is still run on these principles.
The Co-op’s primary aim is to be the most trusted bicycle retailer in the UK. For the Bike Co-op this means offering the richest selection of bicycles and equipment from the most interesting brands to cover the needs of every cyclist – whether you’re an enthusiast or a complete beginner - and to back up this offer with brilliant service. They believe in offering prices that are as competitive as can be without interfering with the quality of the experience. Prices that allow the shop to hire cycling savvy staff who delight in sharing their knowledge and experience with you, the customer. The Co-op sum up their philosophy as ‘running the kind of bike shops we would want to shop in’ – and they hope that you would too! Since 2006 they have been delivering their co-operative services to cyclists (and cyclists

to be) in the Leeds area from their shop in Chapel Allerton. As well as running the best bike shop they can, the Co-op have been proud to support the local community by sponsoring, for instance, the Chapel Allerton Festival and The White Rose Youth League every year since the shop opened. TEST RIDES AVAILABLE A If you would like to enjoy a different kind of bike shop experience, pop into the Co-op’s store on Woodland Lane. This is such a quiet street it could have been made for test rides. The pay-off here is that if one of their bike takes your fancy you’ll be invited to take it for a spin round the leafy park just 200 metres down the road from the shop. There’s no better way to find out for yourself if this is the bicycle that just might transform your life.

Food, glorious food LEEDS INDIE FOOD FESTIVAL 2017 – THE INSIDER KNOWLEDGE. eeds Indie Food Festival 2017 – the insider knowledge For the third year running, this May shines the spotlight on Leeds’ independent food and drink talent over an eighteen-day festival. From 11-28th May, almost one hundred innovative and inspired events will take place across the city, this year broken into one of three festival events strands: Eat, Drink or Do. We spoke exclusively to Festival Director Matt Dix to glean some insider information about some of the most exciting events on the line-up, and to get his take on the shape of the Leeds food and drink scene. With such a broad array of events, picking out any highlights is, of course, both very personal and very tricky. That said, Matt was particularly excited about LIF’s presence this year at one of Leeds’ most architecturally pioneering buildings. “We’ve got some stellar stuff going on in the Corn Exchange,” he notes, “and it’ll be the first time we’ve really used one of Leeds’ most spectacular venues.” Combining our enduring passion for all things Scandi together with a restaurant with an amazing track record for using the best in local, seasonal produce cooked in the most creative of ways, one of the highlights of LIF in the Corn Exchange will, of course, be Harrogate heroes, Norse. “Festival favourites Norse will be popping up over the first weekend for some Scandi fine dining,” Matt tells me. “You can go and eat from an amazing menu, with a bar and tastings from The Champagne Concept and Whittaker’s Gin, plus talks from Signe Johansen, author of ‘How to Hygge’.” Get all of the Scandi you need, wrapped up in a big,

tasty bow in the beautiful Cuthbert Broderick-designed Corn Exchange, on the evening of Friday May 12 or all day and evening on Saturday May 13 Although Leeds Indie Food was born in celebration of the great food showcased by informality and pop-ups around Leeds, we’ve seen the city up the ante in terms of fine dining options over the past year. I asked Matt whether we’ll see that reflected in the LIF line-up. “I definitely think we’ve seen
venues upping their game this year,” he acknowledges, “and I think the more formal dining we’ve seen recently is a sign of a maturing food scene.” As well as the innovative informal events and the excitement of Norse’s occupation of the Corn Exchange, Matt reveals that “Ox Club are set for an amazing (yet to be announced) takeover event with an award-winning London restaurant.” We’re all ears.

Changes paying off MEET ‘MEMBER OF THE MONTH’ FOR MARCH, SIMON BAKER. tepping on the scales left Simon Baker feeling low, and, weighing in at 108kg in October last year, he decided to make a drastic change to his lifestyle and fitness. “Being on the large side, the gym can be an intimidating place, but on one of my visits, I met Craig and Lois and asked if they could help me do a bleep test.”

“The team at David Lloyd were really helpful and gave their time freely to help. What they also gave me was the first bit of encouragement to believe in myself. Since then I’ve probably done somewhere in the region of 200 classes.” After four months Simon has lost almost five stones and is starting to feel much more confident again. And, though he knows there is no magic wand to losing weight, he has seen that with the help and support of David Lloyd Leeds it is achievable. “What I want everyone to know is just how much of a difference the instructors have made to me and my life. Having someone believe in you and give their time when you don’t really believe in yourself is pretty amazing – without that I have no doubt I wouldn’t have persevered. “Since I joined I’ve also got to know Johnny, Eva, Dave, Will, Rupert and George. These guys are worth their weight in gold. The support and encouragement keeps you going when you really need it. I would not be where I am now without them.”
Find something you love at David Lloyd Leeds. They’ve got a first-rate gym with the latest equipment and cutting edge technology to help you keep your routine exciting, alongside a fantastic range of classes with the best instructors. Including innovative activities like virtual group cycling and hot yoga. If you’re feeling competitive, why not book one of their tennis, badminton or squash courts and challenge a friend to a match. LEEDS INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL EXPLORES GENDER DIVERSITY IN TECH.
Bridging the gender gap ith digital industries growing a whopping 32 per cent quicker than other economies in the UK, Leeds’ status as a centre for tech and digital industries is certainly something to celebrate. But is the ballooning success of this historically masculine industry any use to improving figures for female employment and work place diversity? Leeds International Festival wants to show that it is and it can be; that there is both space and an overwhelming need for a diversification of voices in the tech field. Leeds Dock is a thriving tech hub. Look at Sky, one of the biggest employers of coders in Leeds. We spoke to Natasha Sayce-Zelem, Sky’s Head of Tech, who is also the woman behind the Leeds International Festival line-up. “Sky surpassed original targets,” she told us, “with a total of 650 highly-skilled employees now working at the Leeds Dock site. We’re currently one of the biggest employers of coders in Leeds, a digital hub and the company plans to continue this yearon-year by offering thirty technology opportunities annually for young people.” Sky are certainly considering gender balance and diversity too, in this recruitment process – a hallmark seen across several of the bigger tech companies. Natasha adds: “We wish to support and promote gender diversity in a traditionally male industry. Our free ‘Get into Tech’ programme is aimed at women with little or no previous experience in the technology industry, to illustrate the many ways into digital/tech/developer careers. We’ve seen 80 women enrolled on this course since last May, and more than 50 per cent of these have done so in Leeds.” Her tech strand curation reveals just how

But Natasha hasn’t just made a oneconference gesture towards diversity. “I’m happy that 67 per cent of the Leeds International Festival’s Tech strand speakers are female,” she says. “Inspirational female tech role models will speak across the event as a means to engage and inspire future females. I am particularly keen to illustrate the wide variety of opportunities a tech career can offer.” It seems that Leeds’ flourishing tech scene is all set for a female injection into its evergrowing workforce, and Leeds International Festival is a great place to start.

A cut above Dermaplaning is a technique where the outer layers of the skin are exfoliated with the use of a blade. It is a simple and safe procedure for exfoliating the epidermis and is great for ridding the skin of fine vellus hair (peach fuzz). Although merely an old wives tale, many patients are often concerned that any vellus hair will grow back heavier and darker after dermaplaning – this is not the case. As long as the hair is superficial vellus hair it will always grow back at the same rate and texture as before treatment. Who is suitable?
Dermaplaning is recommended for all skin types except those with acneic skin. If you have deep cystic acne, wait until the outbreaks clear before trying the treatment. The treatment is highly effective for those suffering with dry, dehydrated skin.
et Elements take you on a journey that will introduce you to all aspects of the MediSpa, including a free computerised skin consultation (subject to availability) with the new observe 520. Move from room to room throughout the day to see a variety of live demonstrations and be introduced to new treatments like Fibroblast, a revolutionary non-surgical eyelift procedure. Guests checking in and commenting on Facebook during their visit will be entered into a raffle, with a chance to win a selection of amazing prizes, valued at over £3,000. For one day only, 20 cosmetic and medical skin treatments will also be available to purchase at a discounted rate. There’s something to suit everyone, with prices to suit a variety of budgets. Nurturing their talents he Froebelian School, Horsforth is one of the leading independent preparatory schools in Leeds for boys and girls aged 3 to 11 years. Our motto of ‘Giving a flying start to the citizens of tomorrow’ sums up our determination to provide the best possible start to lifelong education. Situated in Horsforth, a pleasant suburb of Leeds near to the ring-road, the school is easily accessible from most areas of Leeds, Bradford and Harrogate. Our site is very secure with a wooded area offering delightful views over the Aire valley. “I am extremely proud of The Froebelian School and of the children and staff who work so harmoniously together here. It is a special place, with a uniquely happy atmosphere.” says, Headteacher Catherine Dodds “Children are at the heart of everything we do and we are passionate that all children enjoy a positive experience at school each and every day. Our aim is to provide a first class all-round education and committed pastoral care in which both the unique needs of our children as individuals are met and their talents can flourish in a caring, structured and secure environment.” The Froebelian School strives to be truly innovative whilst maintaining our reputation for high standards. Benefitting from a highly favourable staff to pupil ratio, we are able to provide plenty of focused support for pupils.
T
We set high expectations for effort and behaviour and the children always rise to meet this challenge. As a result, our children regularly secure a place at their first choice senior school and we enjoy an excellent scholarship success rate. By cultivating a positive ethos built on strong relationships, our children can develop their skills across a wide range of opportunities available to them. Performance and participation are gently encouraged from the very beginning and all our children have regular opportunities to perform in the sporting, theatrical, musical and public speaking arenas. Froebelian School pupils are encouraged to reach the highest possible standards in academic work, sport, music, technology, art and drama. We nurture good citizenship, believe that children benefit from good discipline and we encourage healthy competition. We offer an excellent staff pupil ratio (1 to 10), wellequipped facilities and the support of highly dedicated, professional teachers. As the only school in Leeds to appear consistently in The Sunday Times ‘Top 100’ independent preparatory schools, we aim to provide children with a happy learning environment; one in which they are challenged and supported to achieve personal excellence. Academic success is at the heart of the school and is complemented by plenty of sport, music, art and drama. SPRING HAS SPRUNG!
This framed botanical piece will add a contemporary feel to your home. £75 from www.botanicalartelements.com
PLAYFUL PASTELS AND SHABBY-CHIC ARE THIS SEASON’S KEY LOOKS FOR HOME ACCESSORIES, WRITES IMOGEN SHEPHARD. pring is the time for new life and a new start, so why not change up your home with some new décor? Distressed shabby-chic furniture is often associated with the rustic look. Opt for lighter shades of wood, which will marry beautifully with a muted colour scheme and will look beautiful both inside and outside your home. This is best paired with some classic blooms of spring such as cherry blossoms, daffodils or tulips. Pastel colours are a must at this time of year (pink is on trend for 2017) and add a playful, seasonal touch to your home. Add vintage prints, fairy lights and distressed ornaments, and you will have a home ready for the warmer seasons.

GLORIOUS GARDENS SPRING HAS SPRUNG AND IT’S TIME TO SPRUCE UP THE GARDEN READY FOR THE SUMMER. BY HANNAH SANDERS. ow that the colder months are finally behind us, it’s time to embrace the longer days and put our green fingers to good use. Whether you’re a beginner or an advanced gardener, you’ll know that spring is one of the busiest times and the need to prepare for the upcoming months is crucial. Here are some top tips to help you.
N
Get it in shape
CHOOSE YOUR STYLE
Get rid of weeds
As the weather becomes warmer, your garden will start to feel alive again. The weeds that you dread to see will start appearing, along with ivy and brambles too. It is best to get rid of them as soon as possible.
After tending to your garden with all the general after-winter care, it’s time to start focussing on what style you’re going to go for this year. 2017 is full of new and exciting garden trends, from colour blocking and natural materials to vertical gardening - there’s something to suit every taste.
Keep it trim
Colour Hit
Start pruning dead, overcrowded branches or stems. Ornamental grasses, perennials, evergreens along with rose bushes and shrubs need pruning in early spring.
This involves creating blocks of colour, whether it’s with a painted area behind a planter, coloured tiles or even a solid coloured outdoor rug. Living blocks of colour are on trend too; greens, browns and reds are easy to achieve by using plants. Use clever plant selections to get brighter colours such as pinks or yellows. Also pick plants that change
colour seasonally, to give your garden a fresh lease of life every season. Light up
Outdoor lighting is not only being used to highlight horticulture but, also to serve as mood lighting for outdoor events. Invest in some LED fairy or solar powered lights and create a walkway through your garden or, simply decorate trees and bushes to add some sparkle. Vertical Gardening
With garden space at a premium, plants are headed the same way as architecture; vertically. Taller plants have become increasingly captivating, serving as a great alternative for urban gardeners. Wall planting is set to be a big feature of 2017, so invest in some hanging shrubbery and create your own wonder-wall.
Mow your lawn
This is the job you’ve probably been avoiding- as it really isn’t the most fun. But as the rain is easing off, it’s time to break out the lawn mower and give your grass a much needed haircut. 62 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk
The Urban Jungle Smaller houses, more people renting and a passion for seventies kitsch has led to a trend for more indoor plants. It’s easy to create a small indoor garden with wall hangings, shelves and terrariums, adding a new lease of life into your home which is easy to care for. Look out for cacti as they are set to be the 2017 trend for indoor plants.
GARDEN TRENDS
POPULAR VEGETABLES TO GROW Growing your own vegetables can be very beneficial to cost and saving. If you’re thinking about growing crops, the middle of April is the best time to do so. Focus on how much space you have in your garden; this will tell you what you can grow. If space is limited, think about buying dwarf selections or patio vegetables. However make sure you weed before planting, as if not the area can become overcrowded. Carrots
Best grown in the open ground and in hot weather. If the foliage starts wilting, water the carrots every ten days. Be careful not to crush the foliage, as this can attract carrot flies - putting a barrier over the carrots can prevent this. Potatoes
When the stems are 23cm high, it’s essential that you start ‘earthing up’; dragging soil up covering the stems to produce a 15cm high range. This is a must as it protects developing potatoes from a substance called light which causes potatoes to become green in colour and poisonous. Leaf Lettuce
Thin seedlings when leaves start to appear, proceed until the plants are 30cm apart. Water the plants when the soil is dry in the mornings. Watch out for slugs and sparrows; make a barrier to put around them.
Back to Basics
Instead of the clean-cut modern look, landscapers are going back to the DIY image of the 1970s. Expect more natural materials, running rivers and wooden décor this year. To create a stress-free natural look try using repurposed old wood, driftwood, plant pots, or even create a rockery.
Plants to look out for
Old and new mash-up
English marigold Bright and cheery annual plants that will bloom early summer. They are easy to care for and available in dwarf and tall varieties. Plant in full sun and rich soil.
It isn’t about choosing one style and sticking to it this year. Try bringing both traditional and modern elements into your garden to make it more eyecatching and unique. Pair handmade artisan wares next to furniture with a modern design or in front of a painted wall. New plants on the scene
Zinnia Last year it was a calendula, along with the mountain pepper and Golden Duchess. This year gardeners are keen to find plants that can stand up to the tough weather. Fleuroselect have mentioned that 2017 will be the year of the zinnia, bean and begonias.
After preparing our garden for springtime, it’ll be time to think about making it colourful in time for the glorious summer sun. Here are some popular flowers for this year.
Zinnia One of the easiest plants to grow and bloom heavily. Plant in full sun and rich fertile soil. When the seedlings reach three inches tall, thin them so they’re six to eighteen inches apart.
Comfortable seating
Gone are the days of hard wooden benches, or metal chairs, now it is time for comfortable outdoor seating. Invest in some colourful
cushions and outdoor throws for your furniture. If you want something more unusual, try a swinging round seat or daybed. Hyperlocalism
Plants or vegetables with a local connection are set to see a boom. Look at plants native to your local area and take inspiration from nearby woods, parks or hedgerow. Talk to a garden centre about what would suit your garden. Outdoor kitchens
Garden kitchens go perfectly with outdoor seating. BBQ are not the only thing outside anymore, gradually fridges, work surfaces, sinks and fire pits have made their way outside and this trend will only continue to grow. White plants
White plants are more of a returning trend than a new one. The flowers glow at night, which will complement any outdoor seating. Try water growing vegetables
Having a constant supply of fresh organic vegetables is difficult if you have limited garden space. Try putting the roots of various vegetables including celery, green onion and cabbage in a water bowl and watch them regrow. Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk 63

EATING OUT
Brazilian meat feast FAZENDA CAN SATISFY EVEN THE LARGEST OF APPETITIES, SOUTH AMERICAN STYLE, WRITES HANNAH SANDERS. or many of us, the mention of ‘all you can eat’ and ‘buffet’ brings unpleasant memories of lukewarm food, drying out under spotlights, and the phrase ‘help yourself to the salad bar’ sends us into a panic. However, renowned Brazilian-style diner Fazenda has been proving an exception to the rule, by providing a unique dining experience and showing how to serve meat the traditional South American way. Set in Granary Wharf, the eatery has an ideal waterside setting and its contemporary interior, framed dark wooden beams and rows of draped lightbulbs, makes for the perfect sophisticated but relaxed atmosphere. The meat is cooked on a Brazilian grill and at lunchtime you can enjoy seven types of meat, a number extended to 15 in the evening. There are various cuts of beef to choose from, but also sobrecoxa de frango or pork belly with a honey sauce, presunto and linguica gaucha, which is a traditional South American sausage. The meat is served by waiters (sorry, gauchos) who will carve you generous slices of whatever you fancy as they weave through the tables. Also, if there’s something you fancy, cooked your favourite way, just ask and they’ll bring it right out. Each diner has a round beer mat on their table and, when you’re ready for the meats, turn it to green and the gauchos will approach; once you switch it to red they’ll know to leave you alone.

Plate empty and still peckish? Simply flip the disk over and start the whole process again. If you’re a first-time diner like us, then one of the gauchos will give you a quick run through of how the system works, offering homemade Brazilian cheese bread to get you started. Then it’s time to make your first trip to the gourmet salad bar with an impressive collection of vegetables, cured meats, cheeses, rice and bean salads, fresh bread and even sushi. Don’t load your plate too high though, as when you’re back to the table you’ll be flipping your disks for the first round of meats. Our meat feast began with minted lamb and continued with a steady flow of gammon, sausage and various cuts of beef. Each was as delicious as the last and, although it’s impossible to choose a winner, the barriga de porco (pork belly) was succulent and well complemented by its honey and cinnamon coating. The cap of rump was tender and juicy, while the sausage was particularly flavoursome with just a hint of spice. We reluctantly turned our mats over to red, reversing it just once more for the marinated chicken thighs before almost admitting defeat. Although Fazenda is known for its fabulous meat, the homemade traditional desserts are a cut above. The marquise de chocolate (£5.95) was an indulgent slice of smooth cream and dulce de leche complemented by a rich chocolate base.
Service is all part of the spectacle as the gauchos are pretty snazzy dressers and it’s apparent that with their large selection of South American beers and wine, Fazenda is a true haven for any meat-lover. IT’S THE LITTLE THINGS THAT CAN MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE... CHRIS WILSON ENJOYS A TOUCH OF ITALIAN HOSPITALITY IN THE CAPITAL.
Room with a view... A suite at the Baglioni makes for a relaxing stay
t was all going so well… we were part of the tourist throng in central London on the last hot weekend of the year. After an early breakfast, Westminster Abbey and the National Portrait Gallery had been ticked off our ‘must visit’ list. The turning leaves told us autumn was on its way, but temperatures soared into the seventies and the dress code was short sleeves and sunscreen. The first sign of trouble was an innocuous little announcement of delays on some lines due to signal failures on the underground. Sod’s law dictated that every conceivable tube journey back to our hotel in Kensington and then on to St Pancras for our train home was suddenly running a drastically reduced service. Cue mild panic and instantly revised plans. Forget that last leisurely lunch; it was time to head back to the hotel, grab our bags and sweat it out one last time on the tube in the

hope we would not miss our connection. By the time we made it back to what had been the base for a fabulous city break, you could say we were hot and bothered, but a guardian angel was ready to come to our rescue. Enter the immaculately suited-and-booted Alessandro Convertino, manager of the Baglioni, a rather lovely Italian-owned-andstyled boutique hotel in a prime position opposite the entrance to Kensington Gardens. On hearing the reason for our rushed exit, Mr Convertino had a suggestion. The hotel had a snazzy Maserati car for the complimentary use of residents which had just left to drop a party off at Harrods but would be back in five minutes… would we like a lift to the train station? Well, there was only one answer. Panic over, calm was restored, and during our smooth journey across London in airconditioned luxury we could ponder at
leisure one simple fact… the Baglioni Hotel and all who work there are one class act. OK, so he only offered us a lift. Common courtesy, you might say. But this gesture of kindness was just typical of the attention to detail that made the base for our two-day stay a lot more than just a place to stash the bags and sleep. The Baglioni is all about understated luxury and overwhelming comfort. With dark wooden floors throughout and high ceilings there is a lovely sense of space at all times, and the chocolate and gold colour scheme gives the bar and lounge a delightfully relaxing feel. Service is friendly, understated but immaculate nonetheless. Our suite was the last word in modern comfort with a separate dressing room, a lounge with a sofa and chaise and writing desk, a bedroom with a king-sized bed and a spectacular bathroom of black mirrored granite. There was even a fancy Italian

cappuccino maker… I really should have learned how to use it. No matter, the coffee to accompany fresh-baked breakfast pastries was simply superb. Trust the Italians to appreciate the importance of a proper brew to kick-start the morning. Osteria 60 is the name given to the hotel’s chic, recently refurbished restaurant. It has won many plaudits in London as a stand-alone dining venue and the highlights from a menu inspired by traditional trattorias of the 1950s included ridiculously tender Wagyu beef, succulent lobster and the sharpest Amalfi lemon tart. Tempting though it was to linger in the hotel (and they have a gym and spa if you feel so inclined), we were in a prime spot for one of my favourite London pursuits… strolling. We enjoyed a blissful sunset walk in Kensington Gardens. Kensington Palace is just a few minutes away, and with the round pond, the Serpentine and Hyde Park’s stunning Italian gardens all close by, there is no better way to relax on a bright, sunny evening (even if the constant screech of the vivid green parakeets that have made these parks their home mean the atmosphere is never totally tranquil). Stepping out of the hotel there are also some fascinating sights to be found simple by walking in the connected suburbs of Kensington, Bayswater and Notting Hill. This is embassy territory, and tucked away along these picture perfect streets and crescents with their immaculate whitepainted houses we stumbled across the embassies of Ukraine, Moldova, Iraq, the Netherlands and Russia. Of course, even when you have based yourself in a hotel with a splendid restaurant, you still want to sample something of London’s restaurant scene. I’ve come a cropper over the years, mainly by breaking the golden rule of never eating in areas that are obviously attractive

almost exclusively to tourists. You’re only passing through; you might not even tip so why should they bother. Know the feeling? I guess you’ve also succumbed to the fatal hypnotic effect of Chinatown. But I love Chinese food and really wanted to sample the real thing, as eaten by Londoners. I found it on the opposite side of Kensington Gardens at the Royal China on Queensway in Bayswater. Dim sum has been popular here for decades and the queues start at breakfast time on Sundays. An unassuming entry off a busy shopping street gives way to the substantial Oriental dining room with gold-leaf ceiling, which was buzzing with a lively atmosphere. Here we dined handsomely on steamed dumplings of crab and spinach and prawn and coriander, spare ribs in black bean sauce, sesame prawn rolls, crispy fried squid balls and authentically wobbly cheung fun with peanut sauce. London pubs are pretty special too and again, if you just veer slightly off the tourist trail you will be rewarded with proper, unspoiled watering holes. To name just a few, the Goat on Kensington High Street is one of London’s oldest and is rarely quiet, while The Elgin in Notting Hill is slightly bohemian in feel. Then it’s back to the Baglioni for a nightcap, sweet dreams and another taste of luxury, Italian-style. Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk 85

Keeping up with events… TONY WATSON SPOKE TO NORTHSIDE ABOUT LIFE AT ONE OF YORKSHIRE’S MOST ICONIC ENTERTAINMENT VENUES.
oted Best New Venue in the World 2014 at the Stadium Business Awards, Leeds first direct arena has played host to some incredible artists since opening in September 2013, including Sir Elton John, Bruce Springsteen, Michael Bublé, Prince and Drake, as well as a number of major events including Le Tour De France Grand Depart, Sports Personality of the Year and The MOBO Awards. Here, commercial and marketing manager, Tony Watson speaks to Northside about life at one of Yorkshire’s most iconic live music, comedy, entertainment and sporting venues.
Tony Watson
What do you enjoy most about your job?
V
What lead you to first direct arena?
My background is sport, having previously held management roles at Everton Football Club and Manchester United. I was approached about the role at the arena when it was being built back in 2012 and was delighted to accept the position as it is such an iconic arena. What does your job entail?
I am responsible for the commercial strategy, hospitality sales and marketing of the venue. We have over 100 events a year and each has a different demographic, so it's never quiet. What is a typical day like for you?
There is really no such thing as a typical day when working in an arena! We're an event business, so it's always a mix of planning for the next event and marketing those that are further out. Balancing the demands is challenging, but I have a great team and this has resulted in the success of the arena so far.
There are two elements – I get to work with amazing people who are passionate about what they do, and secondly, I am very proud to be a part of the team that brings some of the biggest names in the world to our corner of the UK. What has been the highlight of your job so far?
I get to work with amazing people who are passionate about what they do, and secondly, I am very proud to be a part of the team that brings some of the biggest names in the world to our corner of the UK.
For me, it was the moment the arena went live on the BBC for Sports Personality of the Year. It was an incredibly demanding couple of weeks of preparation, but the arena looked incredible and it was awesome to see Leeds performing so well on the world's sporting stage. What events at the arena are you most looking forward to this year?
My job is all about secrets, and the answer to this question is currently a secret! However, it's due to be announced soon and it will be taking place in the winter time… What advice would you give to someone wanting to get into this line of work?
Get experience any way you can.Volunteer, engage on social media and demonstrate a passion for the entertainment industry. But above all, remember this role is exciting but incredibly hard work. If you can demonstrate that you are willing to go the extra mile, that you are truly passionate about customer service and the industry and are a self-developer, you can't fail.
