The wily old cynic Don Alfonso wagers that the fiancées of two young men, complacent in their romantic notions of love, won’t stay faithful for a minute if put to the test. It sounds harmless enough and, anyway, the lovers are entirely sure of themselves. But cruelty is inherent in this game of love and chance. Cosi Fan Tutte charts the boundaries of real and feigned emotion, trust and deception, loyalty and desire, with unsparing accuracy and truthfulness.

Place of worship Discover a new world of calm at Wat Buddharam Leeds – everyone is welcome.
M
odern life in Britain is stressful and fast-paced. Meditation and mindfulness are both great ways to slow ourselves down, and though they may seem like trendy new ideas thought up by psychologists, these techniques have been practiced by Buddhists for thousands of years. Whether you have always been interested in Buddhism or feel you could benefit from these ancient techniques, Wat Buddharam Leeds is a serene and welcoming Thai Temple tucked away in the leafy suburb of Headingley. Thanks to ten dedicated committee members and a loan from Most Ven. Phra Prommasith, the abbot of Wat Saket (The Golden Mount) in Bangkok, this former hotel has been transformed into a place of worship for the growing Thai community based in Leeds.
There are six residential monks at the temple, with 17 more bedrooms for visiting monks and lay people wanting to arrange a retreat. There are also a number of important festivals taking place this year, including Songkran for Thai New Year, which the temple will be celebrating on 24 April 2016. The Songkran festival usually takes place between 13 and 15 April and is marked by the throwing or sprinkling of water. It is also a family time where Thai people pay their respects to their elder relatives. Though this is a Thai tradition, everyone is welcome to attend. The temple had its first open day in October 2015, where over 100 neighbours, including residents of a local retirement home, came out for a tour of the centre and to get to know the volunteers, and they hope the New Year celebration in April will attract even more visitors. The temple also offers three prayer times
a day; morning chanting, lunchtime prayer and evening chanting. The centre often has visits from prominent Thai Buddhists and is planning to set up regular meditation and Buddhist teaching sessions in the near future. The Thai Temple is a charity and as such, relies upon the ongoing support and generosity of individuals and organisations. Mr Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, the chairman of Leicester City Football Club and CEO of the King Power Group, has made several donations to the temple, whilst volunteers continue to bring daily donations of food and cleaning products for the resident monks. If you visit Wat Buddharam at lunchtime, you may even be lucky enough to observe the ceremony of gift giving between the volunteers and the monks in the prayer room. Once the monks have eaten, lay people are then invited to have their lunch in the dining room, so if you are ever in the area from 12pm to 2pm, why not drop in for a bite to eat? This peaceful centre is a wonderful place to relax and escape your hectic everyday life, if only for an hour or two. To find out more about upcoming events or how to donate to Wat Buddharam Leeds, visit www.watbuddharamleeds.com or email one of their directors at thaitempleleeds@gmail.com. or a winter break that combines a mild climate and a stylish setting you just can’t beat Cannes in the South of France, the Hotel Barrière Le Majestic Cannes offers a fabulous setting for escaping the worst of the British weather. This palatial property along the Croisette is one of the jewels in the crown of France’s luxury hotels, with an unequalled savoir-faire in terms of service and gastronomy – a haven that embodies the history of Cannes and the Riviera, embellished by a collection of unique photos which highlight the major moments in the life of the Cannes Film Festival. Recently renovated in keeping with the style of the Roaring Twenties, the Majestic boasts a spa, superb leisure facilities, plus two renowned restaurants: La Petite Maison de Nicole, a temple of Mediterranean cuisine, and the Brasserie Le Fouquet’s Cannes, whose menu has been designed and is overseen by the multi-Michelin-starred Pierre Gagnaire, voted the world’s best chef by his peers. The hotel’s extraordinary setting speaks for itself. Located in the heart of Cannes, with its luxury boutiques, the Palais des Festivals, and Barrière’s two casinos, Le Croisette Cannes and Les Princes Cannes, it is also home to typical narrow streets and squares, traditional markets and an elegant port teeming with luxury yachts and sailing boats which is brought to life when its fishermen return from a day at sea, not forgetting the

town’s museums and other permanent attractions. Add to this the Baie de Lérins, with its islands as its focal point, stunning by day and lit up at night like ships reaching up to a starlit sky, and the pristine and scented Estérel mountains, immortalised by great artists and perfect to explore on foot. The Majestic is offering guests a special break at prices (from €156) that are as attractive as the mild climate on the Côte d’Azur in winter, with a guaranteed view of the Baie de Lérins as a bonus. As the sea is part of the DNA of Cannes and the French Riviera, the Majestic has decided to offer guests booking a stay at this palace-hotel a complimentary upgrade to a room with a view of the Baie de Lérins and its islands, considered the pearls of the Mediterranean, and the Estérel mountains, with their everchanging palette of colours. This unique offer in the city of cinema and festivals is available until 31 March 2016, with prices from €156 (instead of €399). Unreal: the Bali Hai club is right on the Vegas Strip
SWINGING CITY John Murphy follows in the footsteps of presidents, movie stars and pop idols to sample the delights of golf Las Vegas-style.

A
im at the pyramid,” said Dave, my golfing partner in his slow Texas drawl. Were we driving off on an Egyptian course in the sand? Well, we were in the sand but it was more of the Nevada desert sort than the Sahara and the pyramid in question was the Luxor hotel on the Las Vegas Strip. That sums up Vegas – inspiring, mightily impressive, but one step away from reality. And it’s that escape from reality that makes the city such a popular destination with tourists from all over the world, with more than 40 million visitors jetting to the desert destination last year. Vegas boasts a myriad of attractions, from 24-hour gambling to exotic hotels, fine restaurants and sensational shows but one attraction that should not be overlooked is golf. Amazingly there are 52 top quality courses within half an hour’s drive of the airport. Bali Hai club maintains Vegas’ fracture with reality. It is constructed on the famous Vegas Strip with views over an array of “
notable landmarks such as the Luxor and MGM hotels. And yet despite its hard-tobelieve location it has a theme – much like the majority of Las Vegas attractions. This course’s theme is a South Pacific island paradise, which is created by deep blue ponds, brilliant white sand bunkers, lush foliage and imposing palm trees. The theme is maintained by the colonial style luxurious club house with its soft leather seating and palm leaved roofing. The club house provides the backdrop to the 16th, a par 3 of 140 yards playing to an island green, as it does to a very difficult finishing par 4 of 486 yards. Get the ball on the fairway then master a long rescue club flighting the ball first over a pond and then drawing it over a beach-sized bunker. With a little luck the ball might just carry to the top of the bunker and then hop onto the green. Two putts mean one of the most satisfying pars of the trip, especially if a 19th hole gallery is gathered on the veranda. A round at Bali Hai means you’re in good company: Clinton, Obama, Samuel L Jackson,

Adam Sandler and U2 are among a long list of celebrities who have walked the verdant fairways of Las Vegas’ only course on The Strip. Another big name to leave a big impression on a Las Vegas club is Tiger Woods who scorched round Rio Secco in a course record 64. He had been a regular at Rio Secco because his former coach, Butch Harmon, runs a golf school at the club. He was obviously in a rich vein of form as a week later he won the 2000 US Open at Pebble Beach by 15 shots. This is golf in the real Wild West. Fairways are hewn out of the desert with huge boulders and rocks running alongside. It’s the rough, but not as we now it. Fortunately my transatlantic golfing pals informed me that rather than smashing a club and a body we should drop out onto the fairway with a one shot penalty. Can we try that in the Saturday medal please? The course is great fun with a number of very difficult par 3s which involve clipping the ball over ravines onto shallow, cliff-hugging greens, framed by prickly cacti and shrubs. A feature of the course is the number of holes that funnel into small greens below sheer cliffs of rock and boulders. “This is where the Indians would round the cowboys up,” drawled Dave. “There was no escape when they were down there and the Indians would just pick them off.” All the courses in the area are worth playing. They all have unusual features but have one in common: they are beautifully maintained, which is an incredible achievement given the lack of rain (1.81 inches in 2014). Our final course was Bear’s Best, the theme of which is a collection of the best holes designed by Jack Nicklaus. The course again is great fun and shouts Vegas with its collection of different holes just as The Strip itself features a myriad of different themes such as Egyptian, French or Italian. When the sun goes down and The Strip lights up it’s time to savour the attractions of another city that never sleeps. Again, suspend
reality as you see a laser image of Gordon Ramsay and his new restaurant flashed onto a mock Arc De Triomphe. There’s a pirate ship on one side of the vast boulevard, a gondola on another and further down The Strip there’s a huge hot air balloon. Many of the older, landmark hotels such as The Venetian, New York New York and Caesar’s Palace are theme based but more recently the trend has been to develop more luxury brands such as The Bellagio, Delano and Aria. Casinos are still a major part of these establishments but they now offer more, such as the wonderful dancing
regularly performing. We were lucky enough to see America’s Got Talent winner Mat Franco and his array of impressive card tricks. The show came after a trip on Vegas’ own ferris wheel – The High Roller at The Linq. Bigger than the London Eye, it gave us great views of the dazzling city made even more enjoyable by drinks served at a bar in one of the capsules. If you’re not golfing in Las Vegas there’s plenty to do in the day. A helicopter ride over the Grand Canyon is a must with its spectacular views over the Nevada desert and The Hoover Dam. Take a trip downtown
Bali Hai viewed from above
fountains outside The Bellagio and impressive shopping complexes. Top class dining is also a feature of Vegas with celebrity chefs having venues across the city. Try these for an eclectic selection: Rivea at Delano,Yardbird at The Venetian, Guy Fieri’s Las Vegas Kitchen at The Linq and the Triple George Grill at Downtown Grand – famous for its delicious steaks. Nightlife doesn’t end with a meal: enjoy cocktails in exotic bars such as The Skyfall Lounge at Delano or a show with such stars as Rod Stewart, Elton John and Celine Dion
to the Freemont Street area: a more earthy but vibrant atmosphere than The Strip and home to a one of the best museums I’ve visited: The Mob Museum. Sit in an electric chair, be part of a prohibition trial and find out about Sinatra’s apparent connection to JFK’s assassination. And of course, don’t forget the shopping malls – that’s when reality does kick in.

NS Business Profile
At your service Christine Boothroyd of The Chambers talks about the secrets of her success.
H
aving experienced the delights of serviced apartments around the world, Christine Boothroyd realised Leeds had a gap in the market for its own alternative choice of accommodation. So when her surveyor husband Richard built new city centre offices in 2003, Christine jumped at the chance to take some of this space and introduce the unique concept to the north. Thirteen years later, The Chambers has been rated number one in Leeds on TripAdvisor for five years running and attracts a host of celebrities, film companies and regular clients – both business and leisure – who return again and again for a luxurious home-away-from-home experience. Here, she tells us all about what she considers to be the best kept secret in Leeds...
Do you have plans to expand further? It’s a brand that we thought we could roll out but as time has gone on, I’ve realised that quality rather than quantity is key. We have a fantastic 25-strong team of people who haven’t necessarily had any experience in the hotel or leisure trade; all we look for is personalities that could be trained into our way of doing things. We also attract a lot of interest from people who want to use The Chambers for parties or events. What else do you think has made The Chambers such a success? We exceed people’s expectations; we like to under-sell and over-deliver. It’s always nice to leave something up your sleeve so our guests are often surprised that they have a nice honesty bar to choose from, free eggs, a gym that’s open 24/7, fabulous outside space, and a
Why did you decide to set up The Chambers? I’d stayed in serviced apartments many times but we had nothing like them in the north. Although people said it wouldn’t work, I had an inkling it would and a lot of people have since eaten humble pie. We now have two locations – our first site, Riverside West, and Park Place, which we opened five years later. When did you decide to do this full time? As soon as the development was ready I stopped working for Morgans City Living, where I’d been selling property off-plan for three years, and set up the company. I did all the furnishing myself, which was no mean feat. Each apartment is designed individually around a Bo Concept sofa. It’s extremely hands-on and hard work but it’s great fun.

library. A good selection of our apartments even have balconies. We also give our guests a great welcome pack that includes a whole breakfast and my signature, a tin of beans. You’d be surprised how many businessmen relish the chance to have beans on toast for tea when they’re working away from home. What has been the highlight of The Chambers’ journey so far? When we had the Australian cricket team staying here. They brought their own security guy but they told him he wasn’t needed after two days because it was so secure. Why Leeds? I’ve got a love of Yorkshire, especially the warmth of the people, and I absolutely love Leeds. I’m from York but moved to Leeds as Richard was working here. We built a house in Roundhay Park overlooking Soldiers Field and I’ve recently bought a little holiday cottage in Filey so that I can enjoy the best of Yorkshire - the beach and the city. The shopping in Leeds is also second to none. What has the business taught you about yourself? There are only so many hours in a day so I need to sometimes realise that I can’t be everything. Over the years, I’ve learnt to delegate and prioritise. I thank my lucky stars and don’t take anything for granted.
Christine Boothroyd
What does the future hold? I’m in it for the long haul – The Chambers is my baby. There is always room for improvement but we want to be the best and stay the best. www.morethanjustabed.com

NS Valentine’s Day
With the most romantic day of the year fast approaching, Phoebe Seymour looks at the origins of St Valentine’s Day.
All you need is
LOVE
I
t’s fair to say that Valentine’s Day has become the Marmite of the holiday world. Cynics are increasingly annoyed by businesses that use it as a way to shift cards, roses and other gifts, whilst hopeless romantics look forward to expressing their love for their partners (potential or current) and being showered with tokens of love and attention. Whichever way you look at it, there’s no denying that the lovefest known as 14 February is deeply embedded in our cultural calendars and is here to stay. But who was St Valentine and why do we send each other mushy love letters? Read on to discover the origins of Valentine’s Day and why we celebrate it in the way we do.
THE ORIGINAL VALENTINE When it comes to Valentine’s Day, it’s difficult to attribute its origins to one man. The Catholic Church recognises three saints with the name Valentine or Valentinus, but at least two of these figures have merged over time. According to one legend,Valentine was a priest who served under Emperor Claudius II during the third century in Rome. Claudius had decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, so outlawed marriage for young men.Valentine however, defied Claudius and continued to conduct weddings for young lovers in secret. In another version of the story,Valentine was arrested for helping Christian prisoners escape harsh Roman prisons, where they were often beaten and tortured.Valentine’s actions were soon discovered
NS • page 38
and Claudius ordered that he be put to death. While in jail, he is said to have converted his jailer by healing his blind daughter's sight. Then according to a later version, he is said to have fallen in love with the daughter and sent her a note signed “From your Valentine” – hence why many of us sign Valentine’s cards in this way today. By the Middle Ages, St Valentine had become one of the most popular saints in England and France. Though it is tricky to separate fact from fiction, these images of St Valentine combined to create the heroic and romantic figure we now associate with all things love.
THE PAGAN FESTIVAL While some believe that Valentine’s Day is celebrated in the middle of February to commemorate the anniversary of Valentine’s death or burial, others think the Christian church decided to place St Valentine’s feast day in the middle of February in an effort to compete with the pagan festival, Lupercalia. Celebrated between 13 and 15 February, Lupercalia was a fertility festival dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture, and Roman founders Romulus and Remus. According to History.com, members of the Luperci, an order of Roman priests, would gather at a sacred cave where the infants

Romulus and Remus, were believed to have been cared for by a she-wolf or lupa. The priests would sacrifice a goat, for fertility, and a dog, for purification, before ripping the goat’s hides into strips, dipping them into the sacrificial blood, and then taking to the streets to gently slap both women and crop fields with the hides in order to improve their fertility over the coming year. Some historians have even suggested it was young naked men who walked the streets of Rome spanking the backsides of young women – suddenly the idea of staying home alone on Valentine’s Day with a copy of Fifty Shades doesn’t seem so bad, does it? Lupercalia survived the initial rise of Christianity and but was later outlawed, by towards the end of the 5th century, when Pope Gelasius deemed the festival ‘un-Christian’ and declared 14 February St Valentine’s Day. During the Middle Ages, it was also commonly believed in France and England that 14 February was the beginning the birds mating season, which further solidified Valentine’s Day as a day for romance.
THE RISE OF THE LOVE LETTER Valentine’s greetings were popular from 500AD, but it wasn’t until the 1400s that written Valentines appeared. The oldest known Valentine still in existence today is a poem written by Charles, Duke of Orleans to his wife in 1415, whilst he was imprisoned in the Tower of London after his capture at the Battle of Agincourt. Valentine’s Day began to be popularly celebrated in the UK around the 17th century. By the middle of the 18th century, it was common for friends and lovers of all social classes to exchange small gifts or handwritten notes and by 1900, printed cards began to replace written letters – most notably, Hallmark who produced their first Valentine’s card in 1913. Today, the Greeting Card Association estimates that 1billion Valentine’s cards are sent every year, making Valentine’s Day the second biggest card-sending holiday of the year (an estimated 2.6 billion cards are sent at Christmas), which just goes to show, there is more love in the world than you might think.
CRAZY, CUPID, LOVE Think you’re all clued up on the season of love? Here are some more romantic facts you may not know about.
ROSES ARE RED, VIOLETS ARE BLUE Sir Edmund Spenser first mentioned the flowers in epic poem,The Faerie Queene in 1590 saying: “She bath'd with roses red, and violets blew/And all the sweetest flowres, that in the forrest grew.” But it was a poem in Gammer Gurton's Garland, a collection of English nursery rhymes in 1784, which first used the modern cliché: “The rose is red, the violet's blue/The honey's sweet, and so are you.”
CUPID The name Cupid may conjure up a cute winged cherub with a bow and arrow, but in Roman mythology, Cupid is the god of desire, erotic love and attraction. He is often represented as the son of the goddess of love Venus and the god of war Mars. In ancient Greece, he was known as Eros
LEAP YEAR
According to an old Irish legend, St Brigid struck a deal with St Patrick to allow women to propose to men.The catch? They could only do so every four years on a Leap Day - February 29. Ladies, if you’ve been waiting for that proposal, this month is the time to take the lead.

NS Interview
He brought the east, west With ‘Year of the Monkey’ celebrations taking place this month, what better time to speak to the king of Chinese cooking, Ken Hom. Words: Fiona Barber
L
egendary chef and author Ken Hom is known as the man who brought Chinese cuisine to British television back in 1984, with his BBC series Ken Hom’s Chinese Cookery. Since, he has published more than 30 books, has cooked for the likes of Tina Turner and Elton John, was awarded an OBE for services to culinary arts in 2009 and, most recently, launched a range of chilled oriental meals in Tesco. I caught up with Ken as he was enjoying a glass of Champagne at the Dorchester Hotel in London. He had just been for a stroll around Chinatown. “I was just in Bangkok, and I feel as home there as I do here. Home is where your friends and family are. I see the world as my home,” he mused. Ken grew up in Chicago with his widowed mother,Ying Fong (his father died when he was just a baby). “My mum instilled values into me and my Chinese uncle had a restaurant and taught me how to cook,” he reflects. “He was an amazing man; he taught me how to work, what was important, and how to be true to things that you believe in – and not to be seduced by fame or money.” Quite unexpectedly – while he was teaching at a cookery school in California – fame did come Ken’s way. He had met renowned Indian chef and television personality Madhur Jaffrey, who had just finished a series for the BBC. At this point, the BBC had interviewed 52 people over two years, in a search for the right person to present a Chinese cookery series. Jaffrey recommended Ken to the producer and the rest, as they say, is history. “It’s one of those things you think: OK it was fun doing it, but I never imagined it would have the success that it did. It really made my career and my reputation, and here I am more than 30 something years later,” he chuckles gratefully.
NS • page 40
Longevity in this business isn’t always plain sailing though, so I wondered what has been the secret to Ken’s success. “I have always been true to my beliefs,” he concludes decisively. “When my series first took off, I was approached by a lot of people to
endorse this and that and I said no, even though, at the time I thought: Ooh the money looks good. But it somehow didn’t feel right. Everything else I have been involved in; the woks and my ready meals, I am really involved in. I’m a real pain in the you-know-what,

because if it’s not good enough, I’m not going to sign off on it. I could have made a lot more money – but who really cares? “I think happiness is really important and to be proud of what you have done. There’s so much rubbish in the world and I don’t want to add to that. I want people say to me: I have a Ken Hom wok from 30 years ago and I’m still using it. That makes me happy.” Throughout our conversation it seems that, despite his success, Ken has remained as modest as ever; when he found out he was receiving an OBE he thought someone was ‘trying to pull a mickey’ on him. It’s also clear that he feels passionately about using food as a way to unite people. “If we all sat down and shared each other’s food and culture, maybe we would not have all these stereotypes and prejudices. If you like Chinese food, you can’t not like Chinese people – it’s the same thing for any other type of food. A lot can get you into trouble, but not food!” It’s at this point I began imagining Ken cooking up a storm on a campfire wok singing John Lennon’s Give Peace A Chance, and he admits: “I’m of the hippy generation, I believe in love. It sounds corny, but that what it’s all about.” With the Chinese New Year on the horizon (8 February) – the year of the monkey – Ken was looking forward to spending time with friends and family and says Chinese New Year is like our Christmas, New Year and Easter all rolled into one. “It’s a time of renewal of

I loved that.” While Ken has cooked for over 55 years there is still nothing he loves more than being in a kitchen trying out new things. “I try to tap into things that I have learned but I’m not
restricted by boundaries,” although he does admit: “I prefer to stick to the traditional methods. A chicken should look like a chicken; it shouldn’t be cubed or a foam, or puréed.” For anyone who hasn’t tried cooking Chinese food before, Ken’s advice is to start simple; a stir fry with vegetables, some crushed garlic, chopped ginger, oil, salt and pepper. “Then let the force be with them!” What kind of force is that? “The force of the wok!” He chuckles again. It turns out he is a huge Star Wars fan. And on that note our time was up. Ken finished his glass of Champagne and went off to enjoy the rest of his evening in London. I drove home with an intense craving for chow mein and silently thanked the man that’s partly responsible for making Chinese food as British as fish and chips. NS Sweet Surprises
The food of love Some of the region’s leading chefs share the secrets of their favourite St Valentine’s desserts. Words: Fiona Barber
David Siddall The Chequers Inn, Ledsham Claypit Lane, Ledsham, LS25 5LP Tel: 01977 683135 With a wonderful selection of regional ales, a delicious daily food menu and a warm welcome, The Chequers Inn could be the ideal cosy and relaxed venue to spend this Valentine’s Day. Once you’ve polished off starters and mains, chef chef David Siddall recom-mends the trio of three fruit crème brulee as the ideal way to round off a romantic meal. Made with double cream, vanilla pod, egg yolk, caster sugar, demerara sugar, and a pureed fruit of your choice, it’s a delicate yet flavour-packed dish to be savoured. He says: “With its sexy looks, tantalizing flavours and voluptuous texture, this is a Valentine’s favourite at The Chequers Inn. “Two spoons are a must for this dessert and is the near perfect way to end the evening.”
Ash Johnson The Cairn Hotel Ripon Road, Harrogate, HG12JD Tel: 01423 504005 With an extensive wine list, an impressive a la carte menu and informal surroundings, the Windsor Restaurant at The Cairn Hotelis the ideal place for a romantic evening. For chef Ash Johnson, a dish that is appealing to the eye and is packed with different textures and tastes is the ideal Valentine’s Day dessert. He says: “Made with strawberries, cream butter and sugar, a trio of strawberry (cheesecake, fruit pastille and crumble) is perfect because, though it has three components, it’s still very light so it doesn’t give you that heavy Christmas-dinner feeling.”

Orhan Girgin Lavanta Restaurant 269 Otley Road, Leeds, LS16 5LN Tel: 0113 274 5525 Chef-proprietor Orhan Girgin has been married for 21 years and has worked every single Valentine’s Day, with the exception of the year his son Jamie was born. “Every year we take Jamie somewhere special during the day to celebrate his birthday,” he says. “But if I was free in the evening too, I would treat my wife to dinner at La Gavroche in London followed by a romantic night at the Claridges hotel.” His favourite Valentine’s Day dessert is a chocolate ganache topped with pistachio crumbs, a perfect combination of rich velvety chocolate served with hazelnut ice cream that cuts through the richness of the chocolate. “A good dessert should have a perfect balance of sweet, savoury and bitterness,” Orhan says. “In my experience a good chocolate ganache is a powerful aphrodisiac, so we’ll be serving this to our Lavanta customers on Valentines night!”
Nermine George Le Chalet 31-32 Park Row, Leeds, LS1 5JD Tel: 0113 243 0576 Nermine George is the managing director of Le Chalet. Her dream was to open a tearoom that provided customers a haven away from the busy world outside and, with delicious breakfasts, lunches and desserts, and attentive staff, that’s exactly what the French tearoom and bakery offers. When it comes to Valentine’s Day Nermine believes that chocolate is key to the ideal dish. “My Valentine’s Day dessert would be Chocolat Croque en Bouche,” she says. This velvety treat is made up of choux pastry, chocolate crème pâtissière and dark chocolate. “It's special because it's so chocolatey and people love chocolate on Valentine’s Day. It's also a very satisfying dish while remaining airy and light.”

It’s a very popular Thai dessert, but also in other parts of South-East Asia.”

NS Eating Out
Adam Kay finds himself in carnivore heaven as he tries out the latest dining out trend to hit Harrogate…the Brazilian rodizio restaurant.
Mighty meaty! Words and photography: Adam Kay
H
ow many restaurants have you been to in your life? 10? 20? 120? Doesn’t it sometimes get a bit… samey? Not the cuisine, but the ritual: starters, mains and puddings, all piled onto porcelain in calculable succession, chomp chomp chomp, wash it down with vino, cheque please and out into the night. Then the same next week, and the one after, and again, and, and… Sometimes it’s nice to try something new. As the global village has grown ever smaller, we in the UK have been introduced to a multitude of new ingredients and flavours. But other cultures can show us different ways to dine out as well – just look at conveyor belt sushi restaurants, a novelty unlikely to ever wear thin. The latest concept gaining ground comes to Britain all the way from Brazil: rodízio. In a rodízio restaurant, you pay a preço fixo (fixed price) for an all-you-can-eat meal. A help-yourself salad bar provides the sides, but the main event is the meat – served on skewers straight from the spit and brought to your table by gauchos (waiters), who slice it right onto your plate (with a knife the size of a sword!). The gauchos flit back and forth from the kitchen constantly, and to indicate whether or not you’d like them to serve you, each table has a double-sided card – turned to the red side shows you’d like a rest, flipped to green means you’re ready for more. Bodega Steakhouse is Harrogate’s first rodízio joint,

opened in a swish underground spot in Princes Square in November 2015, and it appears to have been a hit from the get-go. My girlfriend and I visited on a Friday night in the New Year; she pointed out that the phone never stopped ringing with bookings throughout our visit, and by the time we left there wasn’t a spare seat. The novelty factor no doubt plays a part, but quality and authenticity help too: our waitress Michelle explained that almost all staff are either Brazilian or Portuguese, and that everything – even the extensive contents of the salad bar – is freshly made and cooked in-house.And what of the food? Non-carnivores are well catered for – we were jealous of a delicious-looking salmon on the neighbouring table – but really, Bodega is all about the meat. There are numerous cuts and preparations of it on the dinner menu, 14 varieties in total. Reader, I tried them all. Niggles? Chicken heart is a delicacy I’m in no rush to try again, and I found the lamb’s mint coating a tad overpowering and incongruous. But the rest ranks amongst the best cooked animal flesh I’ve ever devoured. Juicy pork in honey and cinnamon! Chicken thighs, so savoury, so soft! Picanha, a Brazilian cut of marinated steak, completely delicious and the

deep purple colour of beetroot! Even the sausages were sublime. Then I had a traditional pudim de leite (caramel flan), because you need something sweet after all that meat. Then I swigged my traditional caipirinha cocktail, and began to give serious consideration to moving to Brazil. Then I remembered that I don’t need to. Because whenever I fancy authentic South American flavours and a break from the boring formula of restaurant dining, there’s a place that has me covered – and it’s right on the doorstep in Harrogate.

NS Male Essentials
Ripped and shredded A new generation of image-conscious men are tearing up the rulebook when it comes to fitness and the body beautiful. Adam Kay offers his take…
A
re you ready for a name-drop? Brace yourself, because this one is a humdinger. I once interviewed Peter Stringfellow (CLANG!), and he said the following: “What’s the difference between a man and a woman? It’s quite simple. A woman will stand in front of a mirror and go ‘Oh my god, I’ve got a little roll of fat there, oh no!’ A guy will stand in front of a mirror, with a beer belly, and go ‘You know what? If I stand sideways and pull in, I look pretty good!’” Stringy was hugely entertaining when I spoke with him – he does a hilarious Travolta impression – but typically un-PC. And just as his comments above don’t represent all women, Peter couldn’t claim to speak for all men either. Because while older generations such as his may have shrugged off their beer bellies, for the modern man pulling in and standing sideways simply isn’t enough. Today’s guy wants to be fit, healthy and strong, and he’ll happily skip the lager to stay that way. Like the metrosexual – the supergroomed groom of the early 2000s – he’s pampered and preened, but he’s pumped up too. And this new breed of shiny, musclebound man has a new title: the spornosexual. The term was coined in 2014 by journalist Mark Simpson, also the man behind ‘metrosexual’. Simpson’s inspiration for the phrase was the rise in ad campaigns featuring muscular sportsmen such as David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo in highly suggestive poses. (Sport + pornographic = spornosexual, geddit?) Those slick images beaming down from the billboards have influenced the way today’s young men perceive and present themselves. In the age of social media, where image is everything and sharing that image is even better, a photogenic body is vital. And the more toned the torso, the more likes and shares it attracts.
NS • page 50
Bodies beautiful: Jackman, Beckham and Cavill (right)
How, then, does the self-respecting studmuffin get that torso, those inflated biceps and pecs? The days of gentle aerobics and the occasional swim are dead in the water – nowadays male exercise is flat-out, full-on and fuelled by testosterone. The vogue acronym is HIIT – highintensity interval training. On treadmill, bike or rowing machine, the idea is to push oneself as hard as possible in short, sharp bursts, the better to strip fat from the gut. Your typical gym shark might combine this with a gruelling weightlifting session, grunting out a series of squats and lifts with barbell or medicine ball in hand. It’s common to focus on a specific muscle group each visit – so if you’ve ever heard someone talking about “leg day”, they were referring to exercise, not an anomaly in their calendar. Other fitness regimes are even more macho and masochistic. Intense exercise classes such as CrossFit have a dedicated and
growing fanbase; participants complete nonstop HIIT circuits and other traditional gym activities (running, skipping), but also exercise with various props such as climbing walls, huge ropes and, most notably, giant tyres, flipped over as a test of strength. Who knew that in 2016 car mechanics would be such a source of inspiration? (Note: fitness fanatics are aiming for the burly greasemonkey look rather than, say, Kevin Webster from Coronation Street.) It's not just about what spornosexuals put their body through, though, but what they put into it as well. To achieve that allimportant definition on abs and lats, body fat must be reduced right down, and that means a diet rich in protein. White potatoes and bread are starchy no-nos, as are omlettes made with anything other than egg white (spare a thought, pray, for the poor neglected yolk). Meals are typically prepared in bulk for the week ahead, and will prominently feature lean turkey and lashings of broccoli, as well as the food of the moment: avocado. (The ubiquity of the 'avo' has led some wags to declare it 'overcado'. Please, reader, never say this word aloud in public.) That diet is adhered to with unwavering dedication, but spornosexuals approach all areas of their social life with the same discipline. They may allow themselves one 'cheat day' a week to gorge on chocolate, but invitations to the pub will invariably be turned down in favour of another session at the gym. Indeed, fitness clubs are capitalising on this shift in attitude by extending their opening hours and installing bars at which to socialise after a late-night workout. No great stretch, really – the newer super-gyms, garishly lit and soundtracked by throbbing techno, already have an atmosphere akin to any nightclub in Ibiza. As they strive for the perfect physique, today's men are surrounded by role models – not just the stars on the billboards, but on the big screen too. The superhero genre has
www.regionalmagazine.co.uk
050 - 051 NSide Feb16_Layout 1 26/01/2016 16:34 Page 2
never been more popular, and the movies' lead actors are providing the body template for would-be hulks to aim for. There's Chris Hemsworth, his huge arms more than capable of swinging Thor's mighty hammer; Henry Cavill, a truly superhuman Superman; and Wolverine himself, Hugh Jackman, often referred to in fitness circles as Huge JackedMan. Perhaps it's good that these aspirational figures are held in such high regard – but if young Brits start donning capes and wearing their underpants over their trousers, we really should start worrying. There is a serious side to all this, of course. In their undying quest to get ripped, men are supplementing their training and dieting with pills, powders and protein shakes; creatine and whey are frequently referenced in men's health mags. These have long been used by professional bodybuilders, but in the hands of some kid from Scarborough with little experience of the craft, they may not have the same effect. As the market for sport supplements grows, there's also a fear that youngsters will buy online from less reputable sellers, whose products may not be up to scratch in terms of quality. Most worrying are reports of an increase in illegal steroid use amongst those who want the sixpack but without the strenuous effort. The old adage applies: nothing worth having comes easy. For anyone concerned they'll never reach Ronaldo-style pec perfection, however, the latest trendy body shape may offer some solace. The term 'dad bod' describes those men who like to keep fit, but spend too much time looking after their children to worry about having a washboard stomach; no beer belly, just a few squidgy bits here and there. Celebrity examples included actors Vince Vaughan, Jason Segel and even Leonardo DiCaprio, whose laissez-faire attitude to his appearance is becoming legendary. For the spornosexual, the news that chiselled features have already fallen out of
www.regionalmagazine.co.uk
fashion, his hours in the gym all for naught, may come as a shock. But he can console himself with the fact that the dad bod is so simple to attain: just ease up on the exercise a bit, and eat the odd sandwich now and then. And if that doesn't cheer him up, he'll be pleased to hear that a growing chorus of women are saying a relaxed frame, rather than a Chippendale physique, is what really gets them hot under the collar. Dad bod as sex symbol? Peter Stringfellow would surely approve.
‘In the age of social media, where image is everything and sharing that image is even better, a photogenic body is vital. And the more toned the torso, the more likes and shares it attracts.’

ach year, Pantone announces their official colour of the year, which jewellers, clothes designers and interior designers all set their watch to. For 2016, they’ve selected not one, but two colours – Rose Quartz and Serenity. With February being the month of love, shades of pink are especially fitting for this time of year, whilst Serenity is a cool blue, which perfectly balances out the warmth of Rose Quartz. Together, they create a sense of

peace and order in your home (here’s hoping). Couple rosey accessories with heart motifs or break up a pink room with splashes of blue. Many interior designers are already ahead of the game, so you’ll find plenty of textiles and prints which combine these complementary colours. Don’t be afraid to put on your rose tinted spectacles and embrace your inner St Valentine this month. Refreshing shades of blue will ensure a balanced colour scheme throughout your home.

Cameron Fraser (left) and Peter Vann.
From its early days importing from France, Ceramique Internationale has specialised in supplying only the very best tiles.
Leading the way
H
aving your logo designed and produced by a student of the French artist Henri Matisse is a pretty impressive start for any business, and Ceramique Internationale has continued to lead and innovate in the UK tiles sector ever since. Ceramique Internationale actually started life as a tile fixing company in 1974 as part of the Ibmac Group that specialised in Tarmac, asphalt and plant hire, before owner and founder Robert J Ibbitson realised importing and selling tiles had far greater prospects. While the UK tile market was dominated by ceramics manufacturers such as H&R Johnson and Pilkingtons, Mr Ibbitson formed relationships with two renowned French factories – Fourmaintraux et Delassus in Desvres and Carré in Paris – and became one of very few importers during that period. The chief designer at Carré at the time was Roger Capron, who had been a student of Matisse, and produced Ceramique Internationale’s first logo in ceramic. The company grew quickly from its base in Thackley, Bradford, with showrooms opening in central Bradford and the prestigious Kings Road in London in the early 1980s, alongside an export office in Singapore, an architectural office in Northern Ireland and a warehouse at the present site on Royds Lane in Leeds. A further retail store, Discount Tile Warehouse, opened on Canal Road in Bradford around 1990. Business graduate Cameron Fraser was recruited to the business
NS • page 62
by his father-in-law in 1982, initially taking a role in the warehouse. He worked in all areas of the business, quickly rising through the ranks. Turnover had peaked at almost £6million in 1988 and Mr. Ibbitson decided to sell the business to Cameron and two colleagues in 1992. The Royds Lane site became the new HQ and over the following years the other sites were sold off as the business redefined itself as a regional distributor, concentrating on specification sales, distribution sales and direct retail from the new showroom at the Leeds site. When one of Ceramique Internationale’s shareholders left the business in 1994, Cameron had the opportunity to bring his old school friend Peter Vann on board as an equal partner. Peter and Cameron met at school at the age of ten in 1968 after both their families had relocated to Ilkley.
By 1994, Peter had spent his entire career working in the home improvement market with Shires Bathrooms and Spring Ram Corporation, including a stint in their new tile factory, so was a perfect fit for Ceramique Internationale. When the third shareholder took early retirement in 2011, the business finally became a 50:50 split between Peter and Cameron and, after a strong financial performance, the pair have committed to further strengthening the business, targeting £4million turnover by 2020. Speaking about the continued success of the business, Cameron said: “The ethos of the company is a very simple one: we try not to let our customers down by providing quality tiles, backed by our extensive knowledge, at competitive prices. “We have been different from the very beginning – as one of very few companies importing tiles from France in the 1970s. These days we source our tiles from the very best factories in Europe, mainly in Italy, and we are the preferred partners for many, including Casalgrande Padana, Marazzi, Appiani, Ricchetti and Verde 1999.”

Drives of distinction The Yorkshire Resin Company’s reputation for installing attractive, practical and eco-friendly driveways is built on high quality service.
I
f you look after your home it will look after you. And while the interior decoration and sound foundations will be at the forefront of most homeowners’ minds, it’s also important not to forget about the surrounding areas outside. If you have thought about revamping your driveway, the first thing to consider is material. Resin-bound gravel driveways are a fabulous alternative to concrete – they are porous, have no loose stones, look attractive and are easy to lay. The Yorkshire Resin Company specialises in the installation of resin-bound surfacing for both domestic and commercial use. So whether it’s a basic overlay on an existing surface or a full site excavation, they have the knowledge and skills to get the job done. The company has now been established for five years, growing year on year due to high-quality work and word-of-mouth recommendations. Directors Andrew Firth and Hayden Preshaw have worked in groundwork since leaving school and set up the company because they wanted to offer customers a higher-quality service. “Resin is a
NS • page 64
specialist product and if it’s done properly it’s a really good system. Unfortunately this industry is awash with rogue traders who are willing to cut corners.” Andrew says. “We have built up such a good reputation because we never cut corners or skimp on materials and everything we do is to manufacturer’s spec.” All of The Yorkshire Resin Company’s driveways are SUDS (Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems) compliant, which means no planning permission is required because this eco-friendly system absorbs surface water (one of the main causes of the flooding disasters of 2007). A resin-bound surface gives a seamless finish, ideal for disabled access, pushchairs, children and bicycles, it is hardwearing, and also offers flexibility with design choice – you can opt for single or multiple colours, which can be used to create borders patterns and shapes. . Andrew, Hayden and their team offer a complete service, from free quotations and advice, through to design, supply and installation, as well as aftercare from their sister company Power Clean. Choosing The Yorkshire Resin Company to lay your
driveway also means you can enjoy reduced Power Clean rates each year after installation to ensure your driveway looks as good as new. “Our professional approach to design, installation and aftercare ensures a consistent, quality service which is what sets us apart,” Andrew says. He continues: “We give great importance to our groundwork and preparation, as it is essential that new subbases are laid correctly and to specification to warrant our ten-year guarantee.” With a consistent team of professionals who offer meticulous attention to detail, a high-quality product and excellent service from start to finish, look no further than The Yorkshire Resin Company. The Froebelian School ranked 22 in top 100 schools
Year 6 pupils celebrating 22nd place
The Froebelian School has been ranked number 22 in the prestigious Sunday Times Parent Power national survey of the Top 100 Preparatory Schools. It is the highestranked school in Leeds and Bradford and still the only school from Leeds in the top 100. “We are so proud of our children,” said head teacher Catherine Dodds. “This is a testimony to the hard work and dedication of not only the children and their teachers but also the whole school community who work together to foster a life-long thirst for learning.” The Froebelian School has maintained its place in the Top 100 ever since the Sunday Times began publishing league tables over 20 years ago. The school, established in 1913, has a proud tradition of educating children to the highest standard whilst maintaining a close-knit family community feel.

Adventurer Lauren Morton gives an inspirational talk at Gateways School As Northside went to press, 26-year-old Lauren Morton and her team of three other girls were in second place as they neared the end of the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge, which saw 26 teams of four rowers make their way from San Sebastian to Antigua across 3,000 miles of the Atlantic Ocean. The team is hoping to raise £50,000 for Plan UK’s ‘Because I am a Girl’ campaign, which supports every girl’s right to live safe from violence, go to school and have their voices heard. In addition to her latest challenge, Lauren has already rowed the Atlantic for 96 days, run five marathons in seven days and appeared on Channel 4’s ‘The Island with Bear Grylls’. Before embarking on her journey, Lauren, who is originally from Collingham, delivered a talk at Gateways School. She spoke to a crowded Performing Arts Centre audience, where she advised teachers, pupils, parents and numerous other guests to “take any opportunity that you are given as you never know where it’s going to lead”. ‘An Evening with Lauren Morton’ was an event hosted by Gateways Business Networking Group. ith blustering winds and dreary grey skies, the last thing we want to do in winter is go outside. But once we do make the effort to battle the elements and meet up with our friends and family, we feel all the better for it. So why not brush off the cobwebs and arrange a lunch or dinner date at The Granary Restaurant? Just a 20 minute drive away from Leeds city centre, this gorgeous 17th century converted barn is nestled in the peaceful Yorkshire countryside at Crag House Farm. The Granary cafe opened in 2008 and moved next door to its larger premises in 2012, and has since received rave reviews. As well as cooking up happy hen’s eggs and preparing fresh meat reared on the farm, nearly all of the restaurant’s ingredients are grown right here too, from the strawberries

planted in June, right through to the apples harvested in autumn. Last year, Crag House Farm had a successful year growing an abundance of apples, creating three varieties of apple juice, which were sold through the Granary restaurant and farm shop and even the kitchen staff can be seen picking leaves from the herb garden. By visiting the restaurant and buying gifts and treats from the farm shop, you not only
benefit from eating healthy, locally-sourced food, you are also helping to support the farm’s charity, Caring For Life (CFL). What started out as a farmhouse and a small amount of land in 1987 has since expanded into 120 acres, including an on-site cafe, restaurant, farm shop and nursery. The charity runs 17 therapeutic projects to teach skills and help those in need achieve a more independent, dignified and routine lifestyle. There are farm projects such as agriculture, woodwork and helping out in the stables and kitchens. Even the way the farm grows their produce is helping more vulnerable people gain more independence and confidence. “This year our strawberries were grown in a state-of-the-art way,” says marketing manager Buffy Parkinson. “They grow on hung gutters and because they aren’t grown in the ground, those with mobility issues can still get involved and pick them. They actually

grow better this way and they don’t contain preservatives or additives.” The strawberry gutters were paid for in their entirety by the Wessex Youth Trust founded by His Royal Highness the Earl of Wessex and CFL’s patron Sophie HRH The Countess of Wessex. New hospitality manager Helen Brownridge recently joined the team from The Devonshire Arms on the Chatsworth Estate and is looking forward to implementing a number of offers and events this coming year. Pre-book your breakfast date in January and receive unlimited free tea and coffee for the farm’s Breakfast Month, woo your lovedone with Valentine’s Day Dining on 13 February or treat your mum with the High Tea for High Heels Mother’s Day offer on Sunday 5 March. There are also a number of exciting family events at the farm this summer including Crag House Farm’s annual Open Day and a Blooming Summer Soiree event on 4 June. The village fete-style Open Day is run by a number of volunteers and will give visitors a chance to try out activities such as shearing and dry-stone walling, as well as including stalls, butchery demos and guest appearances from the police and fire brigade. Adult tickets cost £5 and children’s tickets cost £2.50, with all funds raised donated to CFL. There are many more inspiring events to enjoy in 2016, but whatever the time of day and whatever the weather, there is always something new to discover at Crag House Farm.
“We host Pause for a Cause coffee events, sponsored charity events and even corporate days for companies, who can take part in team building exercises such as clearing ponds and cutting hedges, all of which, is a big help to the farm,” says Buffy. Live too far away to attend the farm’s events or shop for their delicious jarred goods and quality cuts of juicy and tender meat? Crag House Farm also does a courier service. They deliver to all UK postcodes far and wide – just order one of their bronze, silver or gold meat packages from their online shop. Caring For Life is currently appealing for donations of clothing and printer cartridges from their generous visitors.

Adam is a beneficiary supported by CFL. He works on the horticultural project and has taken great interest in the strawberry gutters. Adam has been unable to secure a job due to a speech impediment preventing him from getting further than the interview stage. He now attends the farm three days a week and the project has given him a huge boost in confidence.

AIMING HIGH: Queen Ethelburga’s offers a world class education at its extensive facilities set on a 220-acre North Yorkshire estate.
Top class No expense is spared on top-class facilities at Queen Ethelburga’s.

ou wouldn’t buy a car without going for a test drive or even consider putting an offer in for a house before having two viewings, so spending some time at a potential school for your child is absolutely crucial to get the feel that it is the right place. Open days are a great chance to see the school when all systems are go! It is a way to see all the departments and facilities and to talk to students and staff to find out exactly what life is like on campus. Queen Ethelburga’s is an independent, day and boarding school at Thorpe Underwood near York. It is set in a 220-acre estate and surrounded by simply beautiful North Yorkshire countryside its facilities really do have to be seen to be believed. The Sports Village is a huge complex complete with a 125 state-of-the-art station fitness suite, which puts most public gyms to shame. There are dance studios, a boxing gym, martial arts room, cycle studio, indoor courts, a table tennis arena and an aqua centre which has infinity trainers, a pool, spectator areas,
sauna, steam room and Jacuzzis. Sport of a different kind is available at Muggles, the students’ recreational centre and café. Whether it is challenging a friend to the assault course or the climbing wall or racing them round the bike track, go-karting track or inline skate course – there is never a dull moment there. If the North Yorkshire weather puts paid to outdoor activities, there is an extensive gaming area, DVD library, karaoke, dj and instrument area and a 3D cinema for the latest releases. No expense has been spared in providing pupils with a similar calibre of facilities in the classroom. A science complex provides the perfect area to pursue the subjects, Home Economics has its own cookery school, the Business Department is impressive with designated work areas and board rooms and there’s an extensive art and fashion department with a complete photographic studio and pottery kilns. With both QE College and The Faculty of Queen Ethelburga’s named as the top two schools in the North of England, and both in the country’s top twenty, according to the
Daily Telegraph’s Independent Schools’ League Table from A*/A A-Level and equivalent results in 2015, you can’t ignore the fact that QE now offers a world class education. The majority of Year 13 leavers go on to some of the world’s most prestigious universities, including Oxford and Cambridge and those belonging to the Russell and former 1994 group. The ethos of assessing every student individually and finding out what he or she enjoys or is good at, gives pupils the basis and confidence to pursue subjects at which they are successful. The Queen Ethelburga’s motto is “to be the best that I can with the gifts that I have” – with the next Open Day on Saturday March 12th – perhaps that’s a date for the diary to find out exactly how they achieve that. The ageing population – what does it mean for us all? Irwin Mitchell’s Paula Myers on the legal challenges we face as we all grow older.

ith advances in medical science and consequently our health, we are all living longer. Life expectancy is now 83 for women and 79 for men. A report issued by Age UK in December 2015 confirmed that the number of people over 85 in the UK is predicted to more than double in the next 23 years to over 3.4 million. 1 in 5 people alive today will live to see their 100th birthday. The statistics are great news for those who remain fit and healthy and have a long list of places they wish to see before they die. Unfortunately, the reality is that later life brings a risk of dementia, which is now more likely to affect people in later life than some cancers, cardiovascular disease or stroke. 850,000 people are estimated to be living with dementia in the UK, of whom 773,502 are aged 65 years or over. By 2025, the number is expected to rise to 1.14 million. Is our legal system equipped to deal with the consequences of the ageing population? The Court of Protection is the court with responsibility for the property, financial affairs and personal welfare of people who lack mental capacity to make decisions for themselves. The court is vastly overstretched and the recent cutbacks are not helping. Applications in the Court of Protection are up year on year. The vast majority involve property and affairs matters. So what can we do to avoid contributing to the growing problem? Obviously plan for the future. It sounds so simple but it’s not something that we as a population are very good at and it’s understandable. It is human nature not to want to talk about these things and the statistics speak for themselves as

more than two thirds of us do not have a will. However, it’s not just making a will that is important as that only deals with your assets after death. Making a Lasting Power of Attorney (referred to as an LPA) is just as important as making a will and it is something that we should all consider doing. It is a legal document which gives you some control over who should manage your financial affairs should you have an accident or succumb to an illness which means that you lack the mental capacity to look after your own affairs. If there is no LPA in place there can be a lengthy delay during which time the affairs of the injured or ill person can get into difficulties if nobody has authority to deal with them. An LPA can help to minimise stress and anxiety for family members at a difficult time. LPA registrations are thankfully increasing. There was a 34 per cent increase in LPA registrations between 2013 and 2015. However, as a solicitor dealing with will, trust and estate disputes, I know only too well that even if people do plan for the future, things do not always go smoothly. I have frequently encountered disputes over LPAs. Disputes may arise in a number of situations. When a person makes an LPA, key family members are notified and this can lead to objections by family members who may try to argue that the proposed Attorney is not a suitable person. It may be that the person objecting just wants to have control over their family member’s financial affairs themselves, whether that be for innocent or cynical reasons. Disputes can also arise once
Paula Myers
an LPA has been registered if a person suspects that an Attorney is in fact not acting in the best interests of the person whose financial affairs they are looking after. This can range from innocent mistakes or recklessness, to full financial abuse. The Office of the Public Guardian has responsibility for investigating complaints about Deputies or Attorneys but an individual can also make an application to the Court of Protection to remove a Deputy or Attorney if they think that they are not complying with their duties. If you are concerned about the financial affairs of a friend or family member or your family is engaged in conflict caused by any of these issues, then it may be possible to take legal action to change the status quo. That may involve changing their Attorney or possibly having a lay or professional Deputy appointed. It is often possible to resolve these issues without expensive Court action and mediation may be appropriate. If you would like to discuss any of the issues raised or would like more advice please contact Paula Myers on 0113 394 6832 or email Paula.myers@IrwinMitchell.com.
