Put your trust in some expert advice Would you take on the role of a Trustee and do you know the risks? By Paula Myers, solicitor at Irwin Mitchell.

W

e are handling more and more cases where individuals are asked by friends and relatives to take on this high position of trust and responsibility. A great number of people take on this role, without taking proper advice, without having insurance in place, with a view to offering a helping hand to a relative or friend. Unfortunately, agreeing to take on the role without advice or proper understanding can result in years of grief, legal costs and what some have described as a poisoned chalice. For instance, many do not appreciate that the role carries with it, the onerous duty of being personally liable. Should things go wrong with the trust, the trustee could find themselves on the opposite side of litigation proceedings. More and more beneficiaries look for someone to blame if the things go wrong with the trust and people hold their professional advisors more accountable if there is a loss to the trust or if the trustee has not acted properly to protect the interests of the beneficiaries. Generally, trustees are governed by The Trustee Act to exercise such skill and care as is reasonable in the circumstances of a case. In addition a trustee’s primary duty is to look after and protect the beneficiaries and by that, sometimes a class of beneficiaries with competing needs and desires. A good trustee will take advice when

NS • page 16

required and this can extend to legal, financial and accountancy advice, as a start. It is not a crime to ask for help, in fact this should be encouraged where expertise is required. There are cases where the advice sought has been incorrect but the trustees are protected against a potential breach of trust because advice has been sought. It is also important to point out that often for the lay trustee, this is not usually a paid role. This can come as a surprise to many who over years have been paid remuneration for taking the badge or title of trustee. This is not allowed and can lead to the very embarrassing and financially difficult task of monies having to be repaid to the trust, many years later. Generally only professionals offering expertise can be paid for the privilege. Our advice is to consider very carefully whether this is a task that is worth taking on, especially if there is any hint of conflict between the parties or if the trust is short of money. It is a role that has proven for many to be far more onerous than they ever imagined and so think carefully before you commit. If you would like to know more about becoming a trustee or have questions about a trustee, Irwin Mitchell’s Will,Trust & Estate Disputes team have extensive experience in this area. For more information please contact Paula Myers on 0113 394 6832 or email paula.myers@irwinmitchell.com

Am I a common law spouse? A guide for couples deciding to live together, by Ison Harrison’s Emma Davison.

S

hall we buy a rural cottage or a modern apartment in the centre of town? Do we get a twobedroom or a three-bedroom property? Shall we have a garden or parking facilities? These are often the questions on the minds of couples looking to buy their first property together. It is an exciting time but some of the most important issues often get overlooked or cast aside in order to prioritise a quick completion date. The questions on the mind of family or property law solicitors in such circumstances would be rather different. Instead, the focus would be on questions such as: • Are both parties contributing to the purchase price? • Is the intention for both parties to be named as owners on the title deeds? • If so, how will they legally hold the property? • If not, is the person not named on the legal title putting money towards the purchase? • Will they make a financial contribution towards the property in the future? • Do the couple have children or plan to have children? Amongst others, these are the type of questions couples need to consider prior to them purchasing a home together. The law governing unmarried

couples is very different to that relating to married couples. Unlike as people believe the idea of a person being a “common law spouse” and thereby acquiring automatic financial entitlements by virtue of simply having cohabited with another for a certain period of time, is a myth. There is no such legal entitlement. If a property is purchased in the sole name of your partner the starting point in the event of the relationship failing is that your partner will own the property outright, even if you have contributed to the property

financially. For you to succeed in a claim against the property you will usually need to produce evidence demonstrating the financial contribution you have made. Even then such a contribution may be insufficient to successfully recover money from the property. For instance, having bought the food for the family or paid the utility bills throughout the relationship will not be enough. When a relationship turns sour, court proceedings may prove necessary to resolve such matters. By protecting your investment correctly at the outset of the relationship and ensuring the property is purchased in a way that recognises everyone’s contribution and understanding can avoid much heartache, delay and expense further down the line. Always consult a solicitor when the decision has been made to buy a home together. This is particularly important where you have or may choose to have children or the financial contributions you make are unequal. It is important for cohabiting couples to know their legal rights at the outset and decide whether to have their intentions regarding property and finances properly documented by a solicitor.

“By protecting your investment correctly at the outset of the relationship can avoid much heartache, delay and expense further down the line.”

Standing on the site of one of the most famous and astounding discoveries of modern archaeology, explore the excavations that unearthed the Viking-age city of Jorvik and discover what this amazing archaeology can tell us about the Vikings. These incredible findings enabled archaeologists to build the JORVIK Viking Centre on the very site where the excavations had taken place, creating a groundbreaking visitor experience that changed the way museums interpreted the past. Under your feet you will see the reconstructed Coppergate excavation, which

took place between 19761981 and exposed Vikingage timberframed and wattle houses, objects discarded by residents and artefacts that were traded across the Viking world. Travel onboard state-of-the art capsules as they take you on a fully immersive journey through houses, workshops and backyards of the Viking-age city, encountering the people that lived there. As you engage with its residents you will experience all the sights, sounds and smells of life 1,000 years ago. Everything you encounter here is based on

archaeological facts – from the layout of the houses, the working craftsmen, the language of the gossiping neighbours, to the smells of cooking and the cesspit! Delve further into the past in our exciting exhibitions that piece together the puzzle of who were the Vikings? Our holographic ghosts will introduce you to over 800 of the 40,000 Viking-age finds discovered on site and explain how these were used in everyday life. You will see weapons, jewellery, ice-skates, coin dyes and even a sock! All preserved in the nutrient-rich soil of York over time. Investigate these findings and discover the scientific techniques used by archaeologists to find out how the Vikings of Jorvik lived, what diseases and afflictions they suffered from, what they ate and even what they looked like. Explore the end of the Viking age in York by examining skeletal remains showing battle wounds and displays of the types of weapons used in battle, and how, even after the defeat of the Vikings in 1066, these Viking warriors continued to influence the world we live in. The 147-room Radisson Blu Hotel in Leeds has unveiled a sophisticated new look and feel - the result of a £3.5m investment programme. Work to completely upgrade the city centre hotel began in January and since then 72 guest bedrooms, meeting rooms and breakout areas, and public areas, have been transformed and are now sporting a contemporary new look. The hotel’s ground floor space has also been completely remodelled, creating the stunning new Fire Lake Grill House and Cocktail Bar - a stand-alone venue within the hotel. “We are proud to unveil our new-look hotel, bar and restaurant. This is a significant investment and represents a marked change for the hotel. We are confident that this enhanced product offering and the new Fire Lake bar and restaurant concept, will help to reaffirm our position as one of this thriving city’s leading hotels” says Malcolm Rann, Regional Director, Radisson Blu Hotels, UK. The use of contrasting warm and cool tones of grey and bronze, with accents of black and white, and the addition of stylish new furnishings; has evolved the hotel’s rooms and public areas. Throughout, bold artwork pays homage to the heritage and roots of the destination, with various nods to Leeds and Yorkshire on artwork and walls; including the dramatic imprint of Leeds legend Peter O Toole on a wall in Fire Lake. The Fire Lake Grill House and Cocktail Bar is a destination in itself. This industrial chic style venue is a welcome new addition to the food and drink scene in

Leeds, boasting an eclectic range of furniture and several drinking and dining spaces. The Leeds launch of Fire Lake, a concept born in Minnesota - the land of 10,000 lakes - marks its first location outside of the USA. Fire Lake combines the mid-west traditions of openflame cooking and the art of cocktail creation and is all about the flavour of the flame. As many dishes as possible are wood and flame-cooked, or wood-smoked. Food is from the local neighbourhood and often organic, cocktails are barrel-aged, and beers handcrafted. Meanwhile, the newly designed bedrooms offer guests two modern styles: Naturally Cool and Permanently Blu, and boast new: carpets, curtains, soft furnishings, mood lighting and furniture. Media hubs have been added to support the needs of guests looking for the latest in in-room technology. The project has also seen the hotel’s meetings and events space restyled. All ten meeting rooms now have a fresh, modern look, complete with feature walls, additional sky-like lighting and new audio and visual equipment. Guests and meeting delegates also benefit from upgraded WiFi lines into the hotel, delivering fast and free connections for all. The refurbishment is being carried out in two phases, with the first phase, the largest and most significant; now complete. Phase two, which begins in January 2016, will complete the hotel’s transformation by refurbishing the remaining 75 guest bedrooms.

NS Great Yorkshire Show

Handing over the reins The current long-standing custodian of the Great Yorkshire Show is stepping down, making way for a new man at the helm. So what does Charles Mills bring to the table? Words: Stephanie Burns Ă‚

A

t the close of this year’s Great Yorkshire Show (GYS) – which takes place in Harrogate from 14 to 16 July – Bill Cowling, who has led the show for ten years, will step down to make way for a new honorary show director. Charles Mills, the new show leader, has been involved with the Yorkshire Agricultural Society – the show’s governing body – for the last 15 years. In that time, he has held a number of roles, including joint chief cattle steward and chair of the Tye Trophy judging panel, and he has been a member of the society’s council since 2002. Among his many responsibilities away from the showground, he chairs the Yorkshire Food, Farming and Rural Network, which raises concerns and issues from the county’s rural businesses and farmers to government. It is fair to say, then, that he is well placed to take over this summer. “I’m very excited to take up the role and

it’s a huge honour,” says Charles. “Bill has been a tremendous honorary show director and I cannot speak highly enough of him. I will certainly have my hands full in trying to be as good as he has been.” Yorkshireman Charles, who turns 60 this year, grew up on Woolas Grange Farm in Appleton Roebuck near York and, apart from his years boarding at Scarborough College, has lived there all his life. He now heads the family farm, which comprises mixed arable rotation, a 250-ewe flock and a small beef finishing enterprise. Charles plans to follow in Bill’s footsteps and is fiercely proud of the team that makes the show happen each year. “I wouldn’t say it is hard work; it’s very hands on but it’s fun and I am looking forward to my new responsibility immensely. However, I’m just a cog in a wheel. There is an incredible group of people involved at Harrogate so we won’t be altering the winning team.” The aim of the show is to accurately

reflect the countryside and all its components, which matter so dearly to the farming community. So as well as a practical business and social event for those well ingrained in the industry, it’s also an opportunity to showcase British farming to the general public. “In lots of ways, we’re trying to increase the public knowledge of where food comes from,” says Charles. “I am extremely proud to be a farmer and my aim in life is to help explain what we do.” An important part of this is teaching the next generation all about farming and Charles plays a significant role in the Yorkshire Agricultural Society’s work with young people, serving on the Grants and Education Committee and the Future Farmers of Yorkshire Committee, and previously being president of Tadcaster and Wetherby Young Farmers. A key highlight of the society’s youth involvement is the Countryside Days event.

“My earliest memories of the show are probably aged four in short corduroy trousers and Wellingtons, being dragged along with my mother and father. Seriously though, I have always enjoyed the show.” www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

Over two days in June, up to 6,000 children aged seven to 11 visit the showground and take part in countryside-themed workshops, including an arable session run by Charles. “These events are immensely useful and we get great feedback from the children. We hope it’s rewarding for them because it’s important for young people to understand about farming life.” It was as a child that Charles first experienced the GYS himself, and those early days made a lasting impression. “My earliest memories of the show are probably aged four in short corduroy trousers and Wellingtons, being dragged along with my mother and father,” he jokes. “Seriously though, I have always enjoyed the show.” More recently, it’s the grand parade of cattle in the main ring that has been a particular highlight. “As joint chief cattle steward I’ve been involved with the parade every year and, though it’s not easy to organise, it’s incredible to see over 400 animals in the ring at once. I’m sure the general public also like to see one beast get away and get excited but the handlers are very good and the animals are very well trained.” More than 8,000 animals are exhibited at the show and many of them are extremely

www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

high quality livestock. But it’s not just the animals that people come to see. “There’s something for everybody – the fashion show, a superb food hall with cookery theatres and the Shetland pony grand national, to name just a few. “After all, we’re not a county show, we’re England’s premier agricultural show – and we are very proud of that.”

“The idea of our showroom is to help tell our clients a story of how we bring their vision for their home to life” Richard Grafton

YORKSHIRE’S HOME OF INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN Stepping through the doors of the Richard Grafton showroom in Harrogate’s Montpellier quarter is like stepping into your dream home. Everything from the walnut wood flooring to the artwork to the stunning marble bathroom tiles has been sourced by the in-house interior architects and designers to create a luxury space that you can see yourself really living in.

ounder Richard explains: “The idea of our showroom is to help tell our clients a story of how we bring their vision for their home to life and it doesn’t feel like a typical showroom. The fire is roaring and the coffee machine is buzzing, just as it would be in a real working home, and we encourage customers to put their feet up and relax.” The Richard Grafton showroom has taken prominence at the core of the Yorkshire interiors scene for the last three years, housing the world’s leading premium interiors brands, which designers use on projects of all shapes and sizes from a full renovation to a room refresh. Alongside its extensive range of fabrics, wallcoverings, furniture and accessories, it previously only offered a taste of the bespoke handmade bathroom, kitchen, cabinetry and AV installations expertise within the Andrew Freestone team. The new extended showroom takes customers on a journey thanks to intricate stonework, detailed timber finishes and innovative sound and lighting systems which set Richard Grafton apart from other interiors retailers as Yorkshire’s premier interior architecture and design house.

“We project manage everything from the initial design and installation to the decoration and dressing of the room”

034 - 037 NSide July15 18/06/2015 15:04 Page 4

The three-storey design hub has the feeling of a high-end Knightsbridge design house with a welcoming Yorkshire twist. Richard adds: “We are proud of our Yorkshire roots and whilst we wanted to create an environment that matched the quality and service you will find in any of the high-end London showrooms, we also wanted to make sure that it was a place where our clients felt comfortable and ‘at home’.” The ground floor houses the Grafton Freestone side of the business and this is where the expert interior architects show clients how to make the best use of the space in their home, showcasing the attention to detail and the quality craftsmanship and materials that go into their projects. Andrew Freestone explains: “People often feel like they have to work with the space they have in their home and don’t always see the possibilities that moving a window or taking out a wall can create. Rather than employing separate tradespeople to work all of this out, we make creating your dream space as simple and stress free as possible. We project manage everything from the initial design and installation to the decoration and dressing of the room.” Designing someone’s home is a very personal process and the Richard Grafton ethos is centred on creating something authentic that is perfectly suited to both the property and the lifestyle of those living in it. The new showroom brings this to life in a ‘home from home’ setting that constantly evolves to showcase the most innovative and diverse range of interior designers, products and services in the North. Because, as they say, everyone deserves a little luxury.

Rural extravaganza

You’ll find everything from farming to fashion at this year’s 157th Great Yorkshire Show – with much more inbetween, writes Fiona Barber.

E

ach year there’s one event that brings farming, fashion and show jumping all together in one place – the Great Yorkshire Show (GYS). Considered as England’s premier agricultural event, the extravaganza is an amazing three days of entertainment, competition and an insight into farming and rural life. Organised by the Yorkshire Agricultural Society (YAS), The 157th show will take place on 14,15 and 16 July and the 250-acre site will play host to hundreds of farmers, along with their finest cattle, sheep and pigs, all competing for the coveted championship rosettes. For many, the competitive classes are the culmination of several months of hard work. Proud owners present everything from poultry to ponies to the eagle-eyed judges for inspection. Impressively, more than 2,000 sheep, 2,000 horses and ponies, and over 1,000 dairy and beef cattle will turn out – all groomed to perfection. As well as the competition classes, there will be a creative mix of attractions and demonstrations. Bill Cowling, show director says: “It’s all about content, whether that is

NS • page 38

the finest animals competing for the judges’ approval, the most exciting entertainment in the main ring or the most inspirational designs on the catwalk, all are integral to the Great Yorkshire Show.” Last year, an impressive 130,949 people flocked to the showground to grab a slice of the action. Bill says visitors attend for a variety of reasons. “It’s a business forum, a showcase for farmers as well as a super day out, but what they expect to see is excellence and this is at the heart of everything we do. There is so much to be proud of in the farming industry and the show is the perfect platform to demonstrate that.” Heading the programme this year is the

entertaining Shetland pony grand national, where crowds will eagerly watch as youngsters race against the clock on their speedy mini mounts. But if it’s top-class show jumping you’re after then the GYS won’t disappoint, with household names such as Michael and John Whitaker showcasing their skills on impressive beasts. While cutting-edge fashion isn’t usually synonymous with agricultural shows, the GYS is a prime place to uncover an exciting glimpse into future catwalk trends. The thrilling and colourful fashion shows inside the Skipton Building Society Fashion Pavilion are a magnet for visitors where, this year, you will witness a number of the region’s leading designers, as well as stars of the future making their debut at the 2015 GYS. Popular womenswear label Phase Eight is at the show for the first time, with a dazzling array of evening dresses, and the high-street label will be joining GYS fashion favourite Hobbs, which will showcase its beautiful autumn/winter collection featuring wool from Yorkshire’s own Abraham Moon. Leeds-based designer James Steward will

present stunning silk dresses and cool and contemporary menswear collections, with many of the womenswear complemented by milliner Beth Hirst’s head-turning creations. For fashion designer Charlotte Lucy, the opportunity to show her 2015 capsule collection on the catwalk marks a return to her design roots. Charlotte was a runner-up in a YAS fashion designer competition in 2008, held at the GYS, and she has wanted to come back ever since. “I can’t wait to show my collection, it’s such a great event to be involved with,” she says. As ever, fashion students from colleges across the region will be in the spotlight when their designs are showcased by models from Morton Gledhill The Fashion Team. This year, students were asked by the YAS to design clothes with a Harrogate theme and after choosing crime writer Agatha Christie and her famous Harrogate connection, the students worked in pairs to create 1920’sinspired designs with the best outfits chosen to appear on the Harrogate catwalk. For the first time, students from Batley College of Art and Design and Sheffield Hallam University will be showcasing their talents, so keep a look out for potential fashion stars of the future. As well as the agricultural and fashion attraction, the GYS is also a showcase for the region’s finest food and drink. This year, inspirational chef Rosemary Shrager will be

sharing her expertise during cookery demonstrations on all three days of the event. The food hall is always a popular venue, with a fabulous selection of gourmet meats, homemade cakes and much more. Complementing this is the cheese and dairy show, with exotic ice cream, flavour-rich yoghurts and of course, hundreds of different cheeses. Don’t forget to visit the forestry section, where you will find the Great British Pole Climbing Championships, among other activities. Watch expert climbers race to the top of the 90ft plus poles in seconds and demonstrations such as chainsaw carving and horse logging. Elsewhere dry-stone walling, horse shoeing, sheep shearing and gun-dog training can be found. The country pursuits area is nestled within a natural amphitheatre with two ponds providing the perfect setting for demonstrations such as fly casting, ferrets and falconry. There’s music courtesy of school and military bands, a host of informative and exciting activities in the discovery zone, hundreds of trade stands with everything from the latest luxury cars to combine harvesters and the wonderful garden show. There’s so much for all the family to discover at the GYS. The show’s longevity is testament to its success – if you’ve never been before it’s definitely time you discovered it for yourself.

Get on your bike!

Frequently asked questions

What is the Government’s Cycle To Work scheme?

U

sing the government’s cycle to work scheme allows employees to buy a bike in instalments through their employer, but in a very tax efficient manner. It has benefits for the employer, and substantial financial benefits to the employee: up to 40 per cent can be saved. The company, or employer buys the bike and effectively ‘hires’ the bike to the employee for a fixed term. It then charges the employee a set amount, which comes out of their pay (before tax). At the end of the term (usually 12 months) the employee buys the bike for a nominal fee, it sounds complicated, but schemes have been set to take the stress out of it. Its all above board, and government sanctioned, and most importantly of all, the savings are real.

Which employees can participate? Any employee who is over 18 years of age, and is paid through the PAYE system. They must have an employment contract lasting longer than the term of the ‘hire’ agreement with the employer. Whose responsibility is maintaining the bike and keeping it secure? This will be the employee's responsibility (the worker). A good lock is a necessity if keeping the bike outside, or even inside. Household insurance can include bike cover. How often should the bike be used, if its to be included in the scheme? There is no set amount, but it is stipulated that the bike must be used as a work commuter for at least 50 per cent of its total use. So a bike can be used for leisure on the weekends for instance, but must be used as a work commuter for 50 per cent of the time also. NS Things To Do

A great day out for all Looking for something to do this summer? Indulge the whole family with a visit to one of Leeds’ classic stately homes – Lotherton Hall and Temple Newsam, writes Phoebe Seymour.

W

ith their gorgeous gardens, grand facades, and immaculate interiors, visiting a stately home can make the perfect summer’s day out; in Lotherton Hall and Temple Newsam, Leeds has two classics of the genre close at hand. Michael Thaw, Keeper at Lotherton Hall agrees it is the whole experience that captures visitors’ imaginations: “I don’t think there’s one must-see thing. You benefit from seeing the whole package,” he says. “Once you get inside, it’s a treasure trove. It’s such an eclectic collection of things. You could walk around the house a dozen times and each time notice something different.” As well as perusing Lotherton Hall’s special oriental collection, you may notice items such as the old racing caps which

www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

belonged to Sir Thomas Gascoigne, who won the first official St Leger race (Doncaster’s historical annual horse race) in 1778. And it’s good news for curious visitors who hate ‘staff only’ signs. “There’s so much to see. You see the bedrooms, where they ate, where they sat – it’s a house where as much as possible is open to the public.” Lotherton Hall is an Edwardian house which was owned by the Gascoigne family from 1825, but its roots go back much further. Some of the building, like the village of Lotherton, is medieval and there’s even a 12th century chapel close by. “The house has evolved over the years. Parts were gradually updated and replaced here and there, but that’s what gives it some of its charm.” Another interesting thing about the

house is the warming effect it has on its visitors, “My favourite thing is that it feels like a house you could live in,” says Michael. “Some stately homes can be too big, formal and intimidating, but so many visitors walk in and say, ‘I could live here! It’s so comfortable!’ “It gives you a glimpse, not of how princesses would have lived, but how the people with enough money comfortably lived.” There are plenty of outdoor activities to explore at Lotherton Hall this summer. You can roam the gardens, designed by Gwendolyn Gascoigne and recognised for their national historical importance, or go beyond the grounds to visit the popular deer park and bird gardens, which is said to showcase one of the best collections of birds in the UK. NS Things To Do

Discover the best on offer... There’s lots to see at Lotherton Hall, from the wildlife to the gardens to the stunning house interior

The great thing about Lotherton is that there really is something for the whole family to enjoy. “We realised there was a gap because there was plenty for young kids and adults to do, but nothing for teenagers,” says Michael. His solution? To turn their woodland area into a high adrenaline playground. “The woodland is so popular. We’ve got two twin racing zip wires and visitors absolutely love them.” If you do have young ones, there is a playground for them too. If you want something to bring the whole family together, there’s the annual Wartime Tea Party on 21 June and the Edwardian Gala on 12 July (see their website for details). Lotherton Hall are also excited to be hosting their first Fabulous Fifties Fete on 9 August, which will celebrate the opening of their Age of Glamour, Fashion in the Fifties exhibition. “I’m looking forward to the Fabulous 50s Fete. It should be interesting and lots of fun!” says Michael. Temple Newsam in contrast, is a huge Tudor-Jacobean mansion. It is one of the great historic houses of England, is famous for being the birthplace of Lord Darnley (husband of Mary Queen of Scots) in 1545 and is sometimes referred to as ‘The Hampton Court of the North’. The mansion was sold to Leeds Corporation in 1922 by the Hon. Edward Wood (later Earl of Halifax). This was the first time the property had changed hands for 300 years and the city was anxious to secure its future for the enjoyment of the people of Leeds and their visitors. “Because almost all the contents were dispersed at this time, the house was

developed as an art museum and built up superb collections of paintings, furniture, silver, ceramics and textiles,” says Principle Keeper Bobbie Robertson. “Although, the original treasures are continually being returned to the house.” Both Temple Newsam and Lotherton Hall are renowned for housing impressive collections that are Designated as of national importance. The home has had restoration and conservation work done over the last 40 years to protect its 500 years of history. Many of the interiors were removed or changed dramatically in the 1930s and 40s, but have gradually been put back. The property has also featured on a number of television period dramas and features in the adaptation of Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell, recently shown on BBC1. Bobbie says this is one of the perks of the job, “It’s difficult to pin it down to one thing, as it is such a privilege to work here, but I love the fact that I get to work in a real life film set.” Temple Newsam’s 917 acres of gardens and parkland are equally impressive and have been developed in recent years for sport and leisure activities including golf, walking and open air concerts. You can also visit the home farm, where you can come face to face with some of the most adorable animals and see some of the rarest breeds of animals in the country. Check out one of their Amazing Animal days between 3-7 August to discover a number of visiting animals from around the world. If summer school is more your thing, ‘Study Day: Discovering the nurses of the First World War’ on 9 July is an insightful

and enjoyable day where you will have the chance to gain an insight into the roles played by nurses in the First World War. Joined by Lucy Moore and Prof. Alison Fell (University of Leeds), you will find out how a country house and family home was used as a convalescent hospital from 1915 to 1917. So why do the museum keepers of these two local treasures believe a trip to Lotherton Hall and Temple Newsam will be so rewarding this summer? “Lotherton Hall is a great place to visit all year round, but like any country house or estate, they always look better in the summer,” says Michael. “You see the gardens at their best, the weather is better and you can do more outdoors. There’s plenty to see and do and with the house located just off Junction 47 of the M1, it’s easy to get to from so many places.” And there’s plenty of outdoor fun to be had at Temple Newsam too. “It is a great

value day out for all the family,” says Bobbie. “You can walk in the gardens, stroll around the lakes, take a tour through the hidden cellars, relax in the tearoom, look in the gift shops and then visit the rare breeds farm. There’s almost too much to do in just one day.” So whether you want to experience

how the well-connected Gascoigne family lived and picnic like it’s the glamorous fifties at Lotherton Hall, or experience how a magnificent Tudor mansion became a First World War hospital and visit the rare breeds at Temple Newsam, they’ll be plenty of activities to keep the whole family entertained this summer.

NS Health

Mr Balachandran Venkateswaran is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Spire Leeds Hospital, Mid Yorkshire NHS Trust and Honorary Senior Lecturer at University of Leeds. Question: I’m a keen tennis player and normally play twice a week, but I’ve started having problems with recurring pain in my right elbow, which worsens when I lift or bend my arm. I’ve tried resting for a week or two, but every time I play the pain and swelling come back. Do you think this might be tennis elbow? Is there something more effective I can do? I’d hate to have to give up my game. Mr Venkateswaran replies: Firstly, you should seek help from your GP to establish the diagnosis, as there are other problems around the elbow that can mimic “tennis elbow”. Assuming your diagnosis is correct, let me assure you that most people are able to get back to playing sport after appropriate treatment. Tennis elbow afflicts the common extensor muscle origin from the bony prominence on the outside of the elbow. It is a lack of healing response of the tendons attached to bone, rather than the inflammation itself, that brings on the pain. Pain is typically activity related, such as a sharp stabbing sensation to a dull ache felt in the outer elbow when lifting a weight, but can also affect rest periods and night-time sleep. Painkillers can help but should be combined with an initial period of rest for four to 12 weeks and stretching of the muscles in the forearm. Hot or cold compresses can help. All of these can be better delivered under the watchful eye of a physiotherapist or your doctor. It is imperative to warm up and stretch before any activity. With such an approach most cases of tennis elbow settle in time. If the condition does not settle down over three to six months, an early injection of a long acting steroid and local anaesthetic can be given around the tendon to relieve the pain. Injections are repeated typically every three to six months if required. In severe or persistent cases, a surgical referral may be necessary, where other treatment options can be discussed including shock wave therapy in selected cases or very rarely surgery itself.

NS Eating Out

Simply Scandinavian Minimalist décor, brown paper menus and no distractions from the fabulous food. Chris Wilson feeds his inner Viking at Norse.

I

t was only a handful of toasted seeds and rice... simple enough in itself. But that dark nutty crunch of goodness, presented on a foam of cider vinegar and apple, with some delicious chewy sourdough bread and properly salty butter, was a sign of great things to come. This was our first taste of the food at Norse, the new restaurant dedicated to the cuisine of Northern Europe that is turning heads, winning hearts and scoring highly with national newspaper critics in Harrogate. Everything here is stripped back, from the simple clutter-free bare-wood-and-plaster décor and the currently trending industrial lighting, to the menu, printed on brown paper, which simply lists the component parts of each dish. No flowery words to read, nothing too distracting on the walls... the wow factor comes from delicious food, cooked with immaculate care. By day Norse is Baltzersen’s, a coffee shop serving Nordic snacks such as cinnamon buns and meatballs. It closes for an hour at tea time and re-opens as Norse. The vibe is still dressed down and relaxed, but food this precise and damned tasty does not happen without some serious cheffing. Head chef Murray Wilson is a former Masterchef: The Professionals finalist. This is a different style of eating: there are no starters, mains or side dishes, just eight savoury plates and three desserts. Each plate is a complete dish and diners are encouraged to try a few. Clearly an occasion for sharing, we ordered four items between us... plenty for two people volume-wise, and each dish had

something special about it. Saddle of lamb was incredibly tender, served with a whole carrot that had been slow-cooked in duck fat for several hours until it was black on the outside and a deep orange colour within. This

was probably the least healthy vegetable I have ever eaten – and it was awesome, in a good way. They are big on foams, crumbles, grains and granita here but nothing seems fluffy or unnecessary. For example, a tiny amount of anchovy crumble is the perfect sharp companion to glazed 36hr shoulder of pork while puffed bulgar wheat with sweet cicely dressing cuts through the rich crab and potato terrine. The drinks menu is pretty special too. There are shots of house-infused schnapps with flavours including hazelnut, lime and coriander that are not too harsh and a lot of fun. I sampled a Danish ale called Sundancer which is labelled a session ale. At 2.7per cent I’d normally dismiss it as far too weak but this had all the taste and bite of a ‘proper’ brew. A bottle of Picpoul, the sharply refreshing white wine for those who have had their fill of sauvignon blanc, really hit the spot. With only three desserts on the menu it was a blow to find one of those dishes unavailable. No selection dilemmas then, but no disappointment either as we embraced the combination of richly smooth chocolate ganache and caramelised white chocolate sorbet and the rather less conventional pine kernel cake and Jerusalem artichoke ice cream. And just in case you are thinking a vegetable-based ice cream takes us into wacky-for-the-sake-of-it territory, it doesn’t. This is still a sweet ice cream, but with the subtlest earthy footnote for extra interest. Norse is bringing something different and rather special to the Harrogate dining scene. Warmly recommended.

NS Eating Out

Deli delights! Chris Wilson was spoilt for choice when he popped into Hayley and Clifford for lunch and discovered a riot of fine flavours. op in for coffee and a quick snack at Haley & Clifford and you may end up with a lot more than you bargained for. For example, two individuals who did precisely that found themselves seated side by side at one of this bustling deli-cumcafé’s communal tables. It was a chance meeting that led to friendship, then romance and, ultimately, a rather splendid wedding. Can you guess who did the catering? I’m a sucker for a story with a happy ending, and while I’m not suggesting for a second that the lovesick singletons of LS8 will find Mr or Ms Right at Haley & Clifford, there can be few nicer places to catch the buzz of a busy lunchtime, indulge in a spot of people watching and eat some fine café food in a relaxed setting. I popped in for an early lunch with an old friend; latecomers may struggle to find a table, although there is an al fresco option if the weather allows. We sniffed the air, decided not to gamble on a rain-free lunchtime, and grabbed an inside table. This is a modestly sized shop but it’s fair to say they don’t waste a square inch of space. There is a splendid cheese counter, fresh bread, a huge selection of dried and jarred deli

P

goods, and a rather nice line in celebration wines and chocolates, just in case a last minute gift needs buying. Orders are taken at the counter and as well as a long list of sandwiches and paninis there is a wide range of hearty, healthy salads and some more substantial plate fillers such as chicken and chorizo parcels; spinach, goats cheese and tomato pie; pork pie; sausage rolls; and roast vegetable, goats cheese and pine nut

What we ate Mains Morrocan beef parcel and three salads, £7.75 Roasted vegetable tortilla and three salads, £8 Desserts Carrot cake, £2.50 Coconut & lime cake, £2.50 Tiffin, £2 Drinks Espresso, £1.75 Cappuccino, £2.55 Haley & Clifford 43 Street Lane, Roundhay, Leeds LS8 1AP Tel: 0113 237 0334 www.haleyandclifford.co.uk

quiche. Deciding what not to have may be the only downside to your visit. We chose a Moroccan beef parcel, which was mildly spicy with a subtle taste of herbs and spices, and a roasted vegetable tortilla. The accompanying salads, a riot of contrasting tastes and colours, were the high point of our visit. We sampled a dazzling selection including carrot, orange, sesame and chive; cabbage, hazelnut, celery and green grape; and asparagus, green bean, pea, chilli and pine nut salad. Five a day never looked or tasted like so much fun. And with so much variety it’s hardly surprising that local businesses keep the outside catering side of Haley & Clifford busy. If all this sounds a little too virtuous, fear not... the counter is groaning with impressively sinful cakes and biscuits. Between us we shared two delicious cakes – carrot, and coconut and lime – and a slice of chocolate tiffin. Perhaps this was not quite so healthy but one constant throughout the meal – Haley & Clifford’s commitment to only using the finest, freshest ingredients – shone through everything. Washed down with excellent coffee, this lunch on the run was still an occasion to be savoured.

Escape to Sukhothai The exotic tastes of Thailand offer a welcome getaway from everyday life. Words and photography: Phoebe Seymour

V

isiting a restaurant can be like going on holiday. You want the whole package; great food and gorgeous surroundings. If you’re anything like me, you’ll want to go somewhere exotic and culturally different to home. Sukhothai in Harrogate is just that. The delicious food and impeccable service, combined with the luxurious setting provide a sweet escape, if only for a couple of hours. We are greeted by our waitress Belle, who is wearing a pink silk sari and a blue, gold-woven sash. As we are shown to our table we are immersed in a busy yet relaxing dining area, surrounded by golden walls, pattern-carved wooden panels, and a number of Buddha and Hindu statues. The hanging black and gold lampshades and little lantern on our table give the room a cosy glow. While perusing the exciting choices on the extensive menu, I sip the house white wine, the Spanish Marques Calado Macabeo, with its strong depth of flavour and my dining partner has a refreshing pineapple juice. Belle points out that, though the dishes we want are not all on a set menu, it is fine to swap them for ones on the a la carte menu. To start, my companion has dumplings packed full of crumbling pieces of vegetables, topped with sprinklings of garlic, sitting in a sweet chilli and soy sauce, whilst the spiciness of my hot and sour soup is balanced by its saccharine

NS • page 72

flavour. Succulent pieces of chicken, crisp spring onions, juicy mushrooms swim in a thin broth topped with coriander. Soon after, my partner’s chicken and vegetable stir fry and my chicken Thai green curry arrive. My curry is full of crunchy bamboo shoots, courgettes and carrots, as well as generous slices of chicken. Every mouthful presents a different flavour. The first is fragrant and almost floral, whilst the second packs a surprising but welcome spicy hit. This dish is complemented nicely by the sugary coconut rice and the comparably subtle jasmine rice. The stir fry comes in a thick, peanut sauce with basil leaves. It’s saucier than your typical stir fry and works well with the pad Thai style noodles recommended by Belle. Whilst we happily tuck into our meal, other tempting scents drift from the kitchen, mixed with the fragrance of incense. A waiter called Adun checks if everything is OK with our food and Belle tops up our water without us having to ask. They are both courteous and helpful without crowding or putting us on edge. Finally, I cool off with a fruity mango sorbet and my partner indulges in a moist and spongy slice of toffee cake with a sticky toffee sauce and scoop of vanilla ice cream. Tonight’s food and service has been amazing and I would definitely visit again. And with three other Sukhothai branches in Leeds city centre, Headingly and Chapel Allerton you’re never far from an exciting and exotic dining experience.

What we ate: Starters Tom Yum (chicken hot and sour soup), £5.95 Khanom Jeeb Pak (vegetable dumplings), £4.95 Mains Gang Kiew Wan (chicken Thai green curry), £9.50 Pad Nam Prik Pao (chicken and vegetable stir fry), £9.95 Khao Suay (jasmine rice), £2.50 Khao Op Ma Prow (coconut rice), £3.25 Noodles, £3.25 Desserts Mango sorbet, £4.95 Sticky toffee cake and ice cream, £4.95 Drinks Small glass of Marques Calado Macabeo white wine, £4.25 Pineapple juice, £1.95 Set menus for two available. Summertime tastes

W

ith temperatures hotting up for summer, you’ll no doubt want to take advantage of the balmy evenings on their way – and it’s easier than you think. Combining an understated, yet sophisticated charm with wonderfully authentic Italian cooking, you need not look any further than Flying Pizza in Roundhay this season. Sit outside while soaking up the sun in our beautiful alfresco dining area at this long-established venue, and escape into the lavish indoor restaurant on cooler nights: both quality environments to match our quality food. Our team is passionate about the delights of hearty, simple dishes made with the best ingredients imported from the markets of Milan - and a whole lot of attention and inspiration is dolloped in too. Among the wide selection to choose from is Garganelli Salsiccia & Porcini (special egg pasta with spicy sausage, porcini mushroom and a light tomato sauce) or Mixed Shellfish Royale

(roasted giant prawn, langoustine, prawn crevettes, scallops and mussels with garlic butter). Come and experience the buzz and share your dining date with friends or family alongside a crisp glass of wine. If you’re in the city and want to combine contemporary dining with classic Italian tastes, then San Carlo on South Parade fits the bill. Positioned within the interior of the business district, San Carlo Leeds offers a wide selection of fresh seafood – displayed in a striking iced display on a beautifully hand-

crafted marble bar. It’s a lively place guaranteeing you a sophisticated experience. We work with star chef consigliere Aldo Zilli, who has created the satisfyingly flavoursome menu of dishes ranging from the well-loved lasagna and pizzas to the more unusual Pappardelle Con Anatra Affumicata (large, flat egg pasta with smoked duck and porcini mushrooms with a touch of cream.) So whether you're popping in on your lunch, planning a romantic night out, or talking business over dinner, this is the place where you'll enjoy great service and even greater food. With a host of awards to its name and more expansion in the pipeline, the family-run San Carlo business, now 23 years strong, has been heralded as one of the UK’s 100 standout companies by The Sunday Times. We’re open 12pm - 11pm seven days a week. For more information about the restaurants, and to secure your table now, telephone San Carlo Leeds on 0113 246 1500 or Flying Pizza on 0113 266 6501, email leeds@sancarlo.co.uk, flyingpizza@sancarlo.co.uk or visit our website www.sancarlo.co.uk.

Tim’s biggest inspiration is his former business partner. “David Brawn built up the planning practice at Barber Titleys, was extremely able, disarmingly charming and taught me to analyse a problem and fully understand it, before deciding how best to deal with it.” His advice to others is: “Aim high and employ good people.”

Chris Wraith The Chequers Inn In the picturesque village of Ledsham, The Chequers Inn pub offers a true taste of Yorkshire with a selection of regional ales and a delicious food menu showcasing locally sourced produce. With a history that can be traced back to 1540, it is one of England’s true traditional pubs where you can be sure of a warm and friendly welcome. Landlord Chris Wraith adopts many roles including barman, waiter, accountant, kitchen porter, maintenance man and sometimes, even peacekeeper. The pub industry can be difficult to crack and Chris’ biggest inspiration is Judith Fish, landlady of The Applecross Inn in Scotland. “Judith runs one of the most remote pubs in the country, yet manages to make everyone feel like they belong and want to stay there.” Chris’ advice is: “Make sure you really enjoy what you do because you’ll be doing a lot of it – work less and party more!”

Director Sanjai Bhatia’s personal goals are to run a successful organisation that provides local employment and the best possible shopping experience for its customers. Sanjai’s business partner Rick has inspired him most, “He has provided solid guidance over the years and given me the best opportunity to reach my goals,” he says. “Hard work really does pay off.” He therefore advises others to pursue their career goals, “If you don’t enjoy your job or role, don’t put up with it – do something else!“

They always try to ensure that their supply chain is the best it can be and constantly monitor their sales and service levels so they can improve their customer care when necessary. Their staff are fully trained and highly motivated. Commercial director Cameron Fraser is currently working towards the controlled growth of the company. Although success is important to Cameron, he reminds fellow business people of what really matters most, “Enjoy what you do and remember your family is more important than your business.”

Azram Chaudhry Sheesh Mahal Restaurant Sheesh Mahal is an Indian/Asian restaurant with a take out and delivery service covering Leeds and the surroundings areas. Azram Chaudhry is the managing director, in charge of the restaurant and kitchen. He feels it is very important to meet and greet customers personally, to get to know them and their needs better. His aim is to satisfy his clients’ needs and to ensure they have a great experience. Azram’s plan is to keep the restaurant as successful as it is today, so he can one day hand the business over to his children. However, he believes that everyone should do what they want to in business, rather than what they have to do. “I see something individual in all people – everyone has something special to offer and we are always learning from each other,” he says. “There is nothing we can’t achieve, although miracles take a little longer!” Â

Eggs on the menu at school

Eggciting news at The Froebelian School where, after six months of loving care, three hens at The Froebelian School have started to lay eggs. The hens are a much-loved part of the Froebelian family, having been hatched from eggs last November. They live in a purpose-built henhouse at the school in Horsforth and are cared for by the ‘Chicken Club’, a group of interested children. The eggs are used in school baking lessons, mostly by lower kindergarten, and they were very excited recently to discover one hen had laid a double yoker. Mrs Giles, the science co-ordinator, said: “Having the hens is a wonderful way to let the children experience caring for animals and also to understand where food comes from.”

Bringing liquorice back to its roots

For the past few years, local farmer Robert Copley has been cultivating a crop which is often referred to locally as black gold. The crop in question, liquorice, grows in the deep sandy soils found around Pontefract. Luckily for Robert, he has such fields on his farm and has thus planted some liquorice in an effort to recreate a liquorice garth. This year will be the first harvest of the crop, which has taken four years to establish and is expected to be small but perfectly sweet and juicy. The root, cut fresh from the field, will be sold in sticks at Farmer Copleys Farm Shop, based on site at Pontefract. Celebrating everything that’s great about liquorice, the Pontefract Liquorice Festival takes place on 12 July and Farmer Copleys Farm Shop will have lots of liquorice products to taste throughout the month. The end aim for the liquorice crop is to produce an essence or extract which can be sold to top chefs nationally. Robert’s wife Heather is currently applying for a PDO for Pontefract-grown liquorice.

First class job – excellent service and would recommend to everyone.

This is the second time we have used The Wheel Specialist at Garforth and once again we were not disappointed. Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate Independent Education Girls & Boys 3 to 19 years Day & Boarding Thorpe Underwood, Yorkshire. Phone: 01423 333 330 Email: info@QE.org Web: www.QE.org

Are we all about academics? No, but were you aware the Daily Telegraph and The Times both rank QE College as the top most academically successful day and boarding school in the North for A*/ A grades at A Level and equivalent results and our Faculty of Queen Ethelburga’s, the third most academically successful co-educational day and boarding school in the North for A*/ A grades at A Level and equivalent results?

Are we all about Sport? No independent school in the North has the equivalent of our £16m Sports Village. A parent said we are now in a league above the rest. See: www.sportsvillageqe.org

Are we all about superb facilities? No, but we have invested over £80m in superb new teaching facilities and resources in the last 8 years - way more than any other independent school in the North.

Are we all about boarding? No, but no one comes close to the quality of our boarding accommodation. The best in the UK. All bedrooms have private bathroom, air-con, TV, phone & mini-kitchen.

Are we all about day pupils? No, but it is interesting to note our day fees are, on average, over 14% less cost than other local independent schools and our bus service covers a very big local area.

Is it all about Scholarships and Awards? No, but then again who else offers over £3m in Scholarships and Awards every year? Even without any form of Scholarship or Award, sending your child to QE could save you between £3,000 and £7,000 in day fees a year, compared to elsewhere.

All of the above are perhaps the reasons why appreciably more parents have chosen QE this year than last year. “ We were looking for our children to change schools. However in the independent sector this has financial implications. Our problems in this regard were solved by the offer of Day or Boarding Awards (our choice) for both children of First Term Free. They moved, are now happy, and doing very well. QE is growing in size because it is run in a refreshing, modern and much better way. There are plenty of day children.”

Enjoy a 6th Form education at QE and pay no fees!.... Day Award up to £25,000, Boarding Award up to £65,000 If your child is predicted; 9 Grade A star GCSE’s they could be entitled to 100% of the fees 8 A star and 1 A Grade GCSE’s worth up to 85% of the fees 7 A star and 2 A Grade GCSE’s worth up to 70% of the fees 6 A star and 3 A Grade GCSE’s worth up to 50% of the fees

FIRST TERM FREE Day or Boarding Worth up to £9,795 Continues for 2014-15 (a) First Term Free for Years N1 to 8 inclusive, or (b) 50% off First Term’s Fees for Years 9, 10, 12.
