Intelligent, practical, elegant Kitchen storage gets stylish with innovative solutions from ALNO. ften when choosing a new kitchen, it can be easy to focus solely on the aesthetics of the project. Visual features such as the range, colour or finish can cause you to overlook vital elements like storage, which make your kitchen functional. ALNO believes that kitchen storage is essential, and that not only should it be practical, it should look attractive too. Offering a variety of intelligent storage solutions for its stylish kitchen ranges, ALNO ensures that your kitchen is easily accessible, organised and elegant, making time spent in this room enjoyable and stress-free. When planning your kitchen layout it is important to consider the space you have available, not only for storing food, but also for utensils, tableware, appliances and cleaning products. A useful tip to help identify your personal storage needs is to create a detailed list of the current contents of your kitchen. Think about which appliances you regularly use and need access to, and

O

consider any items in your kitchen that need storage. Whatever your requirements, ALNO offers a complete service from design to installation and can creatively plan and install the best storage solutions to fit into your kitchen and around your lifestyle. Extra-high storage units are extremely spacious and are perfect for keeping dangerous items, such as sharp cutlery, from the grasp of small hands. Kitchen larders are ideal for kitchens with little space, and a tall larder with pull-out shelving will give you easy access and a clear view of its contents. If you are trying to create a sociable kitchen, an island can provide seating as well as a great storage solution. Peninsulas can work particularly well in small kitchens, and can be designed with deep pull-out drawers boasting plenty of storage space, whilst improving the linear flow and creating the illusion of a bigger room. The Le Mans corner unit, a kidneyshaped carousel with up to four shelves, is an innovative storage idea that

prevents precious space at the back of your cupboards from being sacrificed. Available as an interior for any ALNO kitchen range, the Le Mans unit cleverly swings out to allow you access to every item stored in your cupboards – and with height adjustable shelves it is versatile too, adapting to your changing storage needs. Come and discover all of ALNO’s inspiring storage possibilities at The ALNO Store Leeds. The flagship store offers free parking and is open Monday to Friday 9.30am–5pm, Saturday 9.30am–4.30pm, and Sunday by appointment only. PROMOTIONLEEDS BRADFORD AIRPORT

Flybe and Monarch (right) are just two of the airlines introducing new services from Leeds Bradford Airport

Time for take-off Summer holidays beckon as Leeds Bradford Airport offers more choice to travellers. eeds Bradford Airport announces yet more choice for holidaymakers and overseas property owners to make the most of the holiday season – this year and beyond. The summer season is now here, signalling the time when many people travel for their annual breaks. While you may be thinking ahead and preparing for your upcoming holiday travel plans, Leeds Bradford Airport is working hard to secure even more choice for passengers next summer. The airport, which is set to have its busiest year yet with 3.5 passengers travelling through its terminal, has recently announced the biggest ever Jet 2 and Jet 2Holidays programme in summer 2017. A total of 44 destinations across 14 countries will be featured from Leeds Bradford with Jet 2 and Jet2 Holidays alone, including new route additions to Costa Brava, Naples and Berlin. Thomas Cook are also returning to the airport from summer next year, flying to popular Mediterranean destinations; Mahon, Tenerife and Alicante to name just a few. This welcome addition to the Leeds Bradford portfolio has been introduced to meet increased demand from travellers from

L

across Yorkshire. Thomson and First Choice have also announced they will be increasing their flying programme from summer 2017; with a new route Faro and more flights to Ibiza. Monarch have also recently introduced the popular destination of Malaga to their programme. Leeds Bradford is set to have a record breaking summer season this year, connecting Yorkshire with a wide variety of new destinations. Aurigny, a new airline to the airport, have just started flying to Guernsey four times weekly and Flybe are due to start a three weekly service to Newquay route in the Autumn. Tony Hallwood, Aviation Development Director, said: “It’s an exciting time to be travelling to and from

the airport, connecting passengers from across the region quickly to their destination of choice. The great news for passengers is that Leeds Bradford has twice been named the top for on time performance in recent months.” Meanwhile, to meet demand, the airport is also investing in car parking facilities as well as in its terminal, having recently undergone Yorkshire Premier Lounge upgrades; all making journeys even more relaxing for jetsetters heading off to faraway shores.

LA BODEGA

Kerala Restaurant is where you will find the culinary art of cooking Kerala cuisine at its best. Kerala, the land also known as Gods own country, has a history of more than 2000 years of culinary art; a blend of indigenous and foreign dishes adopted to the local taste. Kerala cuisine is split into Travancore and Northern Malabar, vegetarian and non-vegetarian including seafood. In addition to historical diversity, cultural influence of Hindus, Muslims and Christian have contributed towards the unique dishes in Kerala cuisine. The availability of indigenously cultivated spices and herbs such as cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, green and red peppers, cloves, garlic,

cumin seeds, coriander, turmeric, mint, fenugreek, cashew nuts, etc have played a great role in formulating Kerala’s unique cuisine. Coconut, plantain, various unique fruits and vegetables, tamarind, lime, kodampuli (garcinia cambogia) which is available in Kerala, have their own special role in formulating regional dishes. In Kerala Restaurant, we bring to you a taste from the Travancore and Malabar region. You will be able to find a blend of vegetarian and nonvegetarian dishes, mild, medium and for the adventurous spicy! We started trading in Shipley near Bradford, UK in 2011; the first Southern Indian restaurant inYorkshire. We also cater for special diet requirements such as gluten free, vegan, and we use much less oil so you can enjoy healthy curry with no compromise in taste.

But if you’re in search of a premier sporting venue that can offer numerous full HD TVs and large projector screens, great food and beer, Shooters – part of the Bierkeller entertainment complex – should be your number one choice. From League Two to the UEFA Champions League, if it is on television, they will show it. Whatever sport you are a fan of, whether it is football, rugby, cricket or NFL, they will televise it from open until close. There is also the opportunity to partake in game play as well as watching, with a number of American pool tables free to use weekdays from 12pm until 5pm. For something a little more exclusive, Shooters can section an area off for parties to let you have your own pool table and seating. With a wide range of buffets and parties available from £5, Shooters is the perfect choice for a social gathering. They also cater for both corporate and private bookings, with all packages personally designed to fulfil both yours and your client’s needs. Following on from the success of

previous networking events held at the venue, they now offer bespoke packages to cater for as little as ten to as many as 250 people. Whether it is a networking or team-building event, at the Bierkeller Entertainment Complex – across all floors – everyone is catered for. Networking and social events are great resources as they provide the opportunity to meet likeminded individuals who may become valuable contacts or clients. At the Bierkeller Entertainment Complex they recognise these events are great in a professional environment but also believe they can be equally successful as in a relaxed environment. To cater for this, there are cocktail masterclasses and beer tasting packages available; which are perfectly suited to the less formal occasion. If you would like to book a private area for a corporate event or to enquire about any of their corporate packages give their sales team a call on 08455 333000 or email bookings@burningnightgroup.com. Walk from...

THE ROYAL HOTEL Conveniently located on the market square right at the heart of the ancient old town of Kirkby Lonsdale, the Royal Hotel offers a superb location to explore the best of town and country. Despite sitting just outside the Lake District National Park, Kirkby Lonsdale’s elegant stone buildings, higgledy-piggledy streets and profusion of independent shops, cafés and pubs lend it a timeless appeal that some of Cumbria’s more famous tourist destinations have lost. And from August 2016, the newly enlarged Yorkshire Dales National Park will extend right to the edge of town. John Ruskin’s famous view up the Lune Valley towards the Howgill Fells – immortalised in watercolours by JMW Turner – is just a five-minute walk from the hotel’s front door and from here a number of riverside walks wind their way across the fields beside the river.

The southern slope of the Lune Valley is topped with imposing hills: Casterton Fell, Leck Fell, Brownthwaite Pike, Calf Top and mighty Gragareth – the highest summit in Lancashire. Just a few miles further up the valley, the undiscovered range of the Howgills begs exploration, while to the east, where Ingleborough glowers on the skyline, the iconic Yorkshire Three Peaks beckon. A short drive to the west lie the hidden gems of the Arnside and Silverdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – an often overlooked enclave on the Lancashire-Cumbria border offering superb low level walks and breathtaking views of the Lakeland Fells rising above the Kent estuary. And finally, in the unlikely event that you exhaust all the walking options in the immediate vicinity, the lakes and mountains of the Lake District National Park are just a half-hour drive away.

Don’t miss their exclusive first look at the Jenny Packham 2017 Collection on Saturday 17 September… If you have long-lusted over wearing a Jenny Packham gown, this is the perfect opportunity to be one of the first brides to see the 2017 collection straight off the international runways. The 2017 collection is set on the plains of the Midwest and inspired by the afterglow of a wild night. Inspired by free-spirit and relaxed glam, this collection embodies everything that we have come to love by Jenny Packham. NORTHSIDESHOPPING WORDS: Fiona Barber

Shoppers’ paradise Here’s Northside’s guide to the best in the region’s retail therapy.

LEEDS

THE ARCADES Leeds is proud to house the 19th century Grand Arcade – one of the oldest shopping arcades in Leeds – as well as Thornton’s Arcade and Queen’s Arcade, where you’ll find a selection of shops and boutiques. Each has its own unique identity and atmosphere, so they bring real character to the city and provide a true haven for anyone who wants to shop somewhere different. BRIGGATE As one of Leeds’ main retail streets, Briggate is full to the brim with clothes stores, cafes and eateries. It was founded way back in 1207 and has since developed into the bustling area that we know today. The high-street chains dominate, but there is also great diversity here, ensuring there’s something to suit every shopper’s budget.

THE HEADROW An impressive and largely pedestrianised street spanning half a mile, The Headrow is one of Leeds’ primary shopping streets, holding many of the city’s cultural attractions. With St John’s Shopping Centre and The Core in the vicinity, it has a great number of big-name brands. KIRKGATE MARKET One of the largest indoor markets in Europe, Kirkgate is a haggler’s paradise for everything from fresh food and drink, to fashion and jewellery, flowers and haberdashery. Set in impressive Edwardian buildings, the market has a lively programme of events and hosts regular speciality markets. Still the city’s shopping mecca, the market now also plays host to Jamie’s Ministry of Food continuing the market’s tradition of bringing great quality food and drink to the people of Leeds.

Leeds Picture: Welcome to Yorkshire

THE LIGHT The Light combines independent shops and high street retailers with a wide selection of places to eat and drink. There are stylish bars and cafes, a multi-screen cinema, a deluxe four-star hotel and a premier health and fitness club all under one roof. TRINITY LEEDS Leeds biggest and best shopping centre with 120 shops, bars, restaurants and cinema sat in the very heart of the city. A true urban retail and leisure experience. The centre is a redevelopment of the former Trinity and Burton Arcades and the Leeds Shopping Plaza, which now features all of your high street favourites. VICTORIA GATE Victoria Gate is an exciting addition to the vibrant shopping scene in Leeds. The first phase will capture the heritage of the Victoria Quarter and offer a range of high quality and designer brands. The detailed designs for phase one include three main buildings including a multi-storey car park for up to 800 cars. Alongside regenerating the physical space, the first phase will also deliver up to 1,000 retail and hospitality jobs and 1,000 construction employment opportunities.

There is a huge selection of stores offering everything from fashion and children’s toys to electronics and specialist shops. And with space for 800 cars and a few dining outlets, shopping is made even more convenient. CHELTENHAM PARADE Leading from the Harrogate Conference Centre, Cheltenham Parade is one of the town’s most important culinary streets. Here you’ll find a wide range of cuisine as well as a flurry of independent boutiques and designer shops. BEST OF THE REST For an up-and-coming fashionable boutique district, head to the High Harrogate area around Mowbray Square and Westmoreland Street. Or visit other shopping destinations such as Ripon Road, Hydro Retail Park, Cold Bath Road and West Park.

PROMOTIONROYAL ARMOURIES INTERNATIONAL

Flexible space

Exhibitions are taking centre stage at the Royal Armouries and NEW DOCK Hall in the coming months. xhibitions and conferences are growing at Royal Armouries International plc (RAI) as event organisers make use of the square space between the Royal Armouries and NEW DOCK Hall to expand their exhibitions by adding up to 24 exhibitors. The PLASA Focus show took full advantage of the space and launched The Pavillion for their 2016 event. More than 2,000 professionals from the entertainment industry in the North of England attended the show with traders from audio, lighting, broadcast and stage technologies showcasing their newest products. May was a busy month for RAI, with 5,000 delegates walking through the doors for Buy Yorkshire, one of the biggest business conference and exhibitions in the North of England. Organised by business networking group The Yorkshire Mafia, the event has become somewhat of a showpiece on the North of England’s business events calendar. The event took over two exhibition halls, a total of 185 modular exhibition stands which organisers encouraged businesses to adapt their space to really showcase their business. More than 20 speakers shared their ideas during the

conference, including Terry Waite and Nigel Farage who took part as a panellist on the Billion Pound Panel. New Dock Hall hosted the Leeds rally for the Vote Leave campaign, at which Boris Johnson spoke in front of 500 people. Trading business people and politicians for Game of Thrones stars, the New Dock Hall also hosted the first ever Smashcon. An action-packed TV, film and comic convention, Smashcon’s theme was The Battle for the Iron Throne and featured guest appearances from top TV and film stars, including comedian and Red Dwarf icon Norman Lovett. This month the third annual Leeds International Tattoo Exposition will see more than 120 top tattoo artists from around the world showcasing their talents at New Dock Hall on 4 and 5 June. Artists will battle it out in competitions on Saturday and Sunday evenings whilst boutique traders and exciting entertainment will top off the weekend. The Leeds Waterfront Festival will take over Leeds dock on 25 and 26 June for its ninth festival. Bursting with arts, music, boat races and fun for all the family, those who want to get involved with the festival can join a ‘Splash Mob’,

learn a routine before the festival and perform it on the day. Budding pilots will descend on the Royal Armouries Hall on 9 July for Pilot Careers Live. Representatives from airlines, approved training organisations and universities will be providing information on training, degrees and careers for aspiring pilots. Looking forward to autumn, My Little Pony fans will be spreading the show’s message of love and friendship on 22 and 23 October when PonyCon comes to Leeds. As well as fundraising for their chosen charity, pony fans old and young will be able to enjoy a pony themed day out with talks, exhibitions and quizzes. In November, RAI will host Thought Bubble festival, a celebration of sequential art between 5 and 6 November. The event celebrates everything from superhero comics to independent small press comics and aims to cater to both long time comic fans and those who have never read a comic before. If you’re interested in hosting your own event or exhibition at Royal Armouries Museum or New Dock Hall, don’t hesitate to contact the RAI events team 0113 220 1990 or info@raievents.co.uk. NORTHSIDELIVING

On the up

What does the future hold for the property market? Phoebe Seymour sought expert advice.

s 2016 gets into full swing, homeowners and estate agents can relax, safe in the knowledge that the property market continues to remain buoyant. A shortage of properties towards the end of 2015 and well into 2016 means that demand is high and vendors remain in a position of power. First-time buyers are also continuing to benefit with the government-backed Help to Buy scheme and the Help to Buy ISA securing their places on the property ladder. Richard Waring, director of Thomlinsons auctioneers, surveyors and estate agents in Wetherby, explains how the current climate has created a much healthier market. “Currently, mortgage rates remain competitive and that, coupled with Help to Buy, has assisted in helping people

A

NS • page 74

get on and move up the housing ladder. In addition, higher loan value deals on 95 per cent mortgages are available and there has been an improvement in mortgages for the older generation, too. First-time buyers still need a deposit for their mortgage, but should shop around for the best deal.” Rising house prices mean that many people – particularly first-time buyers – are finding it hard to save up more than a five per cent deposit. But you needn’t let this put you off buying your dream home. Whilst the lowest

mortgage interest rates may be reserved for borrowers with big deposits of around 40 per cent or more, there are still plenty of competitive deals for buyers with just five per cent to put down. Demand for properties in northern England has gone from strength to strength and, in particular, Yorkshire’s ‘golden triangle’ is attracting more buyers than ever before. “Yorkshire, with its major towns of Leeds, York and Harrogate, has Richard Waring, director of Thomlinsons auctioneers, surveyors and estate agents in Wetherby

been voted in the national press as the ‘trendiest and happiest place to live,’” says Richard. “Leeds continues to expand as a major legal centre, keeping house prices very buoyant.” The recent introduction of increased Stamp Duty rates for buy-to-let properties and second homes resulted in a rush to complete purchases before 1 April 2016 and, consequently, the market for these properties has tightened and prices have fallen slightly. The political climate may also play a part in the future of the UK housing market, as Richard explains. “Currently there is some uncertainty regarding our vote to stay or leave the EU. There is a lot of speculation from both sides of the argument as to the expected effect on property sale prices and this seems to have slowed the market down slightly over the past month or so. National house builders have also seen a slow down in enquiries over the previous month, making the markets more stable for buyers and sellers.” While, it is difficult to predict the effect this will have on the future of the UK property market, it’s generally a positive message from Richard: “National house builders are active with new sites and there are a lot more new build properties becoming available, giving buyers a good choice. We anticipate that the housing market will remain active and that prices should be stable with the potential for future growth.”

A new way of teaching is proving inspirational to children T

Above: A natural environment inspired by Reggio-Emilia provides unlimited play and learning possibilities. Above right: All snacks are prepared (and even grown) by the children. Bottom Right: In addition to weekly Bushcraft sessions, children love time spent in our excellent outdoor facilities, especially the new mud kitchen.

he early years at Moorfield have always been a time for exploration, curiosity and discovery. With the addition of new cutting-edge facilities providing a calm, safe and nurturing environment for children from 2-5 years old to play and learn, it has never been a more exciting time to visit. Teaching is inspired by the ethos and principles of Reggio-Emilia and the environment has been planned around this, allowing a natural space that provokes and encourages learning. Expertly supported by teachers and practitioners, children are seen as leaders of their own learning, using their interest to ignite projects and activities. We are passionate about education and our pioneering way of teaching ensures that the progress and wellbeing of each child in our care is simply astonishing.

The only way to truly experience the wonder of a Moorfield education is to visit and explore for yourself. Free taster sessions are available on request. Please contact us to book your place.

JUST FOUR KICKS… Porsche has released an all-new version of their mid-engined coupe sports car. STYLE AND PRACTICALITY

The Honda Civic Sport is a car for those who want the comfort, practicality and running costs you’d expect from a traditional family car but yearn to have a much sportier appearance. The Civic Sport already plays this role extremely well as it can achieve up to 76mpg on the combined cycle, yet it takes a lot of design cues from the bonkers-looking Type R hot hatchback. It’s the best of both worlds. Along with the brilliant 1.6-litre diesel and the 1.8litre petrol engine that are available for the Sport, you can now have a 99hp 1.4-litre i-VTEC petrol unit. Available with a slick shifting six-speed manual gearbox this new entry-level Sport variant will start from £18,360. Available to order now.

FEEL THE NOISE The latest generation of the Audi R8 is a welcome relief. Instead of following the rest of the industry by downsizing and turbo-charging their engines, the R8 has stuck to its guns and kept to a naturally-aspirated formula. Not only are these engines more responsive compared to their turbo-charged counterparts, but they’re considerably louder too. As you would expect, the R8 Coupe is a fantastically aurally stimulating machine but this can only get better because now the Spyder version is coming along. Available to order from later in the spring with deliveries at the end of the year, the new R8 Spyder will come with a 532hp 5.2-litre V10 powerhouse mated to an S-Tronic dual-clutch gearbox. As with the Coupe, there’s no manual available.

REACH FOR THE SKY Want your German super-coupe to be a little more… draughty? Well we have good news for you; the C63 is going topless. It’s the C63 AMG Cabriolet and it’s an electrically-operated multi-layered fabric job which can be lowered or raised at speeds of up to 31mph. As it’ll be based on the C63 AMG coupe, it’ll come with the same 4.0-litre bi-turbo V8 motor producing either 469hp or 503hp in C63 S guise, and it’ll come with all the same equipment options. It literally is a C63 with the roof chopped off. It’ll weigh more than the regular car, and certainly cost more too. But will you really care when there’s millions of miles of blue sky at your disposal. The C63 Cabriolet will be launched in August.

NISSAN TURNS UP THE DRAMA ON THE GT-R The current-gen Nissan GT-R has been with us now since 2007, and every year since the Japanese company has tickled its underbelly and internal workings – an extra dollop of power here, a suspension tweak there. You get the idea. Now Nissan has really gone to town with the MY17 edition and the changes are the most dramatic yet. In essence, the car’s looks have been changed giving it a more aggressive stance on the road with better aerodynamic properties. There’s a more luxurious new interior with fewer buttons and better sound deadening. The suspension has been changed to give better handling and improve ride quality. Power has also been raised to 562hp. The order books opened this month with first deliveries this autumn.
