Pay as you go 2014 and 2015 have seen marked growth in the number of people without private medical insurance choosing to pay for treatment in a private hospital. Suzanne Wynne-Jones, business development manager at Spire Leeds Hospital in Roundhay explains some of the factors driving this growth.
T
here are many reasons why an increasing number of people are opting to self-pay for private hospital treatment.
Suzanne explained: “Probably the most compelling reason is speed of treatment. Rather than waiting many weeks or even months for first appointments and elective surgery in the NHS, patients can simply phone or email a private hospital such as Spire Leeds and book an appointment to see a consultant specialist within a matter of days. Often, they do not even need a GP referral. At the appointment, patients can then arrange rapid appointments for any tests, scans, physiotherapy or surgery “As with many things, having a choice is also crucial; people like to be able to choose which hospital to come to, which consultant to see, when to have an appointment and especially when to have surgery. The cost of private hospital treatment is often more affordable than they think, with out-patient consultations starting from £150. “Undoubtedly another factor is now the restriction in some of the services that the NHS provides. In some parts of our region for example, varicose vein surgery is often no longer widely offered and many people only have the option of paying privately”.
Suzanne Wynne-Jones, Business Development Manager at Spire Leeds Hospital
Considering self-pay? Ask our specialist team Spire Leeds has a dedicated team of three Private Patient Advisors who are able to help enquirers in a range of ways. They are able to: • Provide guidance on which areas each consultant specialises in.
According to a recent survey by the Health Service Journal, more than a third of Clinical Commissioning Groups (NHS organisations set up to organise the delivery of services in England) are considering further limits on access or eligibility for services in the coming year.
• Give basic information on procedures and tests.
Suzanne added: “The reputation of the hospital and consultants also plays a significant part in influencing the decision on whether to pay for treatment and where to come. At Spire Leeds, we pride ourselves on our excellent clinical standards and 26-year heritage. All consultants hold or have held consultant posts in NHS hospitals and many have national and international reputations.”
• Liaise with consultant secretaries as necessary.
• Arrange appointments. • Give information on the costs of diagnostic tests and treatment. • Provide details of our medical loan scheme. • Provide information on how soon surgery/test/scans can be done. • Arrange a tour of the hospital for patients and families. • Give tips on if and when a GP referral letter is required. • Put patients in touch with others who have had similar treatment and are happy to share their experience.

A-Z of services at Spire Leeds Hospital
Advantages to choosing private healthcare • You do not have to wait – you can usually book a first appointment to see a consultant within 24 hours and you can usually arrange a scan or surgery within days if you wish. • You are under the care of a consultant who is a specialist in their field and who will be the same specialist seeing you at each consultant clinic visit. • We pride ourselves on looking after our patients as patients but also as important customers and we will help organise your care from the first contact you make with us. • You choose when you come for your appointments, tests, surgery or follow-ups. • You benefit from the reassurance of being in a large, multi-specialty hospital with 300 specialist consultants. • You can have most tests/surgery at the same hospital here without the need to travel to another site or hospital. • You can have procedures with us which may no longer be available on the NHS (examples include varicose vein treatment, benign mole or blemish removal, weight loss surgery and others). • Recovery times may be improved with personalised, frequent and timely physiotherapy rehabilitiation sessions. • You can be referred from one specialist to another directly and quickly. • Our car parking is extensive and free and there are excellent public transport links to the hospital here in Roundhay.
If you would like further information on any procedure, test or paying for your treatment, please email info@spireleeds.com or call our patient advisors on 0113 218 5967 or 0113 218 5977

Plans are nothing, planning is everything Paula Myers explains why thinking ahead is vital when it comes to relationships.
W
e are frequently consulted by cohabitees who make contact because their long standing partner has died and they are uncertain and vulnerable about their future and financial security. In some cases, this can mean that it is not clear whether they can continue to live in their home which can mean individuals having to leave a property which they have called home for many years. It is, these days, often women who find themselves in this position as they have a longer life expectancy than men, though some of our clients are men or are in same-sex relationships and all can have a valid claim in law if this scenario sadly arises. It should be common knowledge that cohabitees do not have the same legal protection as spouses and there is no such thing as a common law partner. This, however, is not as common as lawyers would like to think and we are often faced with delivering the devastating news that this is not the case, when a client is already in a shocked and emotional state from losing their loved one. Last month we took a case to trial in London in the Central London County court which has unlimited jurisdiction for these sorts of claims. Most cases do not reach the stage of a trial but this case, which was well reported in the media, ended up before a judge for five days. Our client, Miss Williams, was the long-standing cohabitee of Norman Martin. They lived together for 18 years, and they considered themselves to be life partners. They were planning their retirement when Mr Martin died unexpectedly from a heart attack aged 69. The couple had lived together, purchased a property together and they holidayed, shopped, entertained and were part of each other's extended group of friends and family. Mr Martin helped to carry
NS • page 12
carried the coffin at the funeral of Miss Williams' mother and they attended all family events together as a couple. This was clear from the supporters, ranging from relatives to ex- work colleagues and the siblings of Mr Martin, who attended court and who all supported Mrs Williams in bringing her case. To the outside world, they presented as a couple and a number of people thought that they were married. Mr Martin presented Mrs Williams with his mother's wedding ring, which she still wears today, and in court, the judge was persuaded by the evidence of Miss Williams. Unfortunately, Mr Martin did not get around to updating his will. This was something that the couple planned to do as they planned their retirement together, but it just didn't happen and Mr Martin died before arrangements were put in place. An old will was in existence which left everything to Mr Martin's estranged wife, from whom Mr Martin had not divorced although they had put in place plans to separate their assets at the time that Mr Martin left the matrimonial home in the early nineties. Mrs Martin did not accept that her relationship was over with Mr Martin and she would not recognise the 18-year relationship with Miss Williams. She contested the claim for one half of the house, even though she obtained the matrimonial assets and Mr Martin's pension. The judge held that Miss Williams was entitled to bring a claim and that she could demonstrate that she and Mr Martin had lived together as husband and wife for a period of in excess of two years, which is a requirement of the law. The Judge then found that inadequate financial provision had been left for her and he found that erasable financial provision for her would
Paula Myers
be to transfer the property outright to her. We were successful with the case and Miss Williams achieved the property that she had lived in for years outright. The Judge also ordered that Mrs Martin was to pay an interim payment of one hundred thousand pounds towards costs as, after all, she had contested the claim and fought it to a trial after a four-year legal battle. This case, whilst a victory for Miss Williams and a result that we are relieved and happy with, highlights the problems that failing to make plans can cause. If the will had been updated, if a cohabitation agreement had been put in place or if difficult conversations had taken place, then we may not have reached this stage. The chances are that the result is far from what Mr Martin would have wanted for the love of his life and, in reality, he would probably have left some of his pension provision for Miss Williams. As it turns out that is not something that can be achieved and Miss Williams continues in her employment at the age of 69 to help her make ends meet. This real-life example should highlight the problem that failing to plan can create and is hopefully a wakeup call for many to make the plans that they have put off for some time. NS Business Profile
Rock ‘n’ roll grafter Larissa Kisel has been the event marketing, PR and activation executive at Leeds First Direct Arena for ten months. Here, she tells us why she loves her job, why she is so passionate about live music, and why the industry isn’t as glamorous as it seems.
What does your job entail? The most crucial part of the job is getting creative to help the arena sell tickets. The second crucial part, and one that I love, is working alongside our naming partners First Direct. They are a fantastic company to work with and are open to some of the wildest ideas. Describe a typical working day. I don’t think I have ever had a ‘typical’ working day. It is a compelling and diverse environment so you never get two days the same. This is brilliant for me as it keeps me on my toes and keeps me constantly working on improving my ideas and methods. What has been the highlight of your career so far? To have created and executed a Christmas social media campaign that reached a higher engagement than any other arena in the UK. What do you enjoy most about your job? At a sold-out show when the crowd is creating a buzzing atmosphere, all the hard work, long hours and late nights you put in seem more than worth it. What is the toughest part of your job? This kind of industry comes across as very
NS • page 16
glamorous. It does have its rock ‘n’ roll benefits but a lot of grafting and getting your hands dirty is required. People are very surprised when they hear we are such a small team.
be able to make yourself stand out above the rest. Try to think outside the box and be versatile with your employment background and the skills you offer.
If you’re having a tough day, what gets you through? Lots of coffee and my colleagues. My working practise has always been to have a great working relationship with people. You never know when you need support from them and vice versa, even if it is a terrible joke to make you laugh.
What do you love about Leeds? I live in Huddersfield but I grew up in Leeds. What I love about the city is the passion people have for it. I have travelled and lived and worked in many cities and nowhere beats Leeds for this. The city has so many prospects and is continually growing. It is finally being put on the map for corporate business and business expansion opportunities, and it is just what the Yorkshire region needs.
What made you apply for the job at Leeds First Direct Arena? I am a live music fanatic and there was one point when I was at a live show four or five times a week. I have followed SMG Europe for a long time; I love their company aspirations and it was my career goal to get a job at one of their arenas. I struck lucky with First Direct Arena as it has amazing prospects for growth. I worked incredibly hard on my application and my interview prep but I think what made me stick out (I’m hoping) is the passion I had to be a part of this company. What advice would you give to anyone thinking of a similar career? Don’t get disheartened. It is an extremely tough industry to break into but you have to
What do you enjoy doing outside of work? I am an enthusiast for a healthy way of life; I love to cook and I exercise daily. I have also been a music journalist for many years, writing for a variety of publications. Where do you see yourself in ten years? My venture with SMG Europe and First Direct arena has just started but I have already learnt so much and met so many people. I’m quite happy to keep investing into my current role, by strengthening my skills and knowledge, and improving and developing the role to promote growth within the Arena and the company.

What a swell party it was! Hotel booking agents blown away by their spectacular annual dinner at NEW DOCK Hall.
N
EW DOCK Hall regularly hosts the region’s most fabulous events, welcoming thousands of delighted guests to Leeds Dock each year. At the beginning of 2016, its reputation as Leeds’ largest banqueting and exhibition venue reached even greater heights when it hosted the HBAA (Hotel Booking Agents Association) annual dinner. So impressed was chair Jacqui Kavanagh with Royal Armouries International’s (RAI) sterling reputation, stunning location and admirable venues that she chose to hold the glittering event outside London for the first time. In her address to the 320 attending guests, Jacqui thanked ‘the lovely Leeds’ for a great Yorkshire welcome. James Vincent, RAI managing director, was thrilled to welcome the association to the north. “We were delighted to have been chosen to host the event and given the chance to showcase Leeds to such a prestigious audience,” he said. “With attendees staying in a variety of hotels across Leeds it was a great opportunity to show off the wonderful things Leeds has to offer to people not so familiar with the city.” RAI worked closely with the HBAA’s events committee to deliver the prestigious event and were especially commended for supporting their every request. “The team at RAI were incredible and nothing was too much trouble,”

said events committee chair Louise Goalen. Guests began their evening with a drinks and canapes reception in the Royal Armouries Museum’s Tournament and War galleries. Surrounded by an awe-inspiring collection of arms, they were entertained by a dramatic interpretation of knights in shining armour, which kick-started the evening in the most spectacular style. The sumptuous dinner at NEW DOCK Hall followed. “NEW DOCK Hall is an amazing space and the room was lit up with glitter balls, star cloths and dressed in green, orange and white to complement our Irish theme in honour of the outgoing chair,” said Louise. “Meet In Ireland kindly sponsored the mind-blowing entertainment, Celtic Dawn. This show had never been performed in the UK before and all the guests were just amazed by the spectacle. To keep the momentum of the party going, the Bogus Brothers band came on and the dancefloor was not empty at any stage of the night.” If you are inspired to host your own fantastic event – whether it’s an intimate party for your closest friends and family or a huge bash to impress hundreds of guests – RAI can cater for them all. Timeless style
Classic looks, reasonable prices and friendly service combine to make Georgie’s Boutique a must for fashionistas of all ages.
I
f the last 18 years have taught Georgie Roberts anything, it’s that many fashion trends have a habit of coming back around. However, it’s nice to know that the personal and friendly customer service at Georgie’s Boutique never goes out of style. The boutique is located in the fashionable West Park area of Harrogate and is proud to be an independent women’s wear boutique stocking quality, yet affordable brands such as Aideen Bodkin, Forever Unique, Oui, Javier Simorra, Inwear, Almost Famous, Bariloche and many more. Joint owner Georgie has been in the retail industry for 27 years, starting out as an assistant at a successful country wear store, before opening her own store Georgie’s Boutique. Five years later, the demands of her busy family life meant she needed a little help, so Georgie’s mother Ann Day stepped in as joint owner in 2003. Ann is now in charge of accounts and helps with the day-to-day running of the shop, whilst Georgie enjoys the creative side of the business, such as putting outfits together and dressing the window spaces with this season’s must-haves. However, Georgie knows from experience that what really drives her
NS • page 30
business is the strong relationship she and her dedicated team have with their customers. “Customer loyalty is key to our success,” says Georgie. “We’re helpful, not pushy, and believe in looking after our customers. We are always happy to source products from individual, smaller companies and over the years, many of our customers have become our friends.” Georgie’s offers everything from smart casual wear such as jackets and shirts, to evening dresses. They have a wide selection of wedding outfits including a gorgeous wedding range by Aideen Bodkin and quality cashmere brands, including Brodie and Ochre, are particularly popular. There are also a number of accessories including jewellery and handbags to complete your look. And the best part? You get all the most rare and unique brands without the hefty price tags. As well as establishing themselves as one of the friendliest and best stocked women’s wear stores in the area, Georgie’s Boutique has traded at many charity fairs over the years, most notably at Castle Howard, Ripley Castle and Newmarket Racecourse. Ten per cent of the proceeds from these sales went to various charities close to the Georgie’s heart, including NSPCC and Macmillan.
Georgie’s clothing is aimed at women aged 30 to 80, but as Georgie has found – women from either side of this age bracket dress more alike than you’d think. “We have a whole range of styles, but there are a number of items older and younger customers agree on,” confirms Georgie. “I had a 70-year-old buy a poncho and later that day I sold the same poncho to a woman in her twenties. Some fashion items remain classics.” Call into Georgie’s Boutique for some advice or for a coffee or a prosecco and a browse. If you’re still not sure what you’re looking for, they also offer a personal customer service by appointment.

Bold and beautiful Despite his imaginative creations having taken the bridal market by storm, there’s much more to come from designer Ian Stuart, says Stephanie Burns.
W
himsical, theatrical, flamboyant’. In three words, globally renowned bridal designer Ian Stuart perfectly sums up his signature style, a style that has been pored over by brides the world over for well over a decade and continues to attract great acclaim from both customer and peer. Anyone who has taken even a passing interest in fashion or bridalwear will be familiar with Ian’s creations. Boldly taking his needle and thread where few have dared to venture, his more elaborate gowns wouldn’t look out of place in a Renaissance painting and are often held up as the pinnacle of bridal design. Deftly focused on fit, quality, styling and detail, each piece is a work of art inspired by three of the designer’s passions: old films, coffee table books and music. I managed to grab a quick phone call with Ian at the beginning of the year as he was putting the finishing touches to his 2016/2017 collections – due for release in April – to discuss the highlights of his illustrious career. In his line of work, days are anything but typical. In and amongst the designing, his time passes by in a whirlwind of meetings with fabric suppliers, modelling agencies, sales agents and jewellery designers, all the while cataloguing and storyboarding the fabrics, laces and trimmings he collects along the way. Days after we spoke, he embarked on one of his regular fabric-finding missions in Hong Kong, China and Taiwan. From a young age, Ian was given a taste of a more international lifestyle than many children are. He was born in Holland in 1967 before moving to Manchester when he was five. Growing up, he adored theatre and the arts and almost signed up to acting school. Instead, he studied design and graduated with a fashion degree from Berkshire College of Art and Design in 1989. Before the course had ended, he had already been snapped up by David Sassoon of

Bellville Sassoon – a Chelsea-based couture company that has counted Jackie Kennedy, Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor and every member of the royal family except the Queen among its loyal clientele over the years – and chose, accordingly, to specialise in wedding dresses for his final project. “It was a practical decision,” he admits. “I really wanted to do theatrical costumes but I realised that at that time there wasn’t that much work in it. Wedding dresses and eveningwear were the most similar things.” At the age of 25, he secured a job at Sweetheart Gowns – in his words, ‘a big cheesy American bridalwear company’ – where he worked for ten years, winning Wedding Dress Designer of the Year in the USA – a major achievement for an English designer – in the process. In 2002, having moved back to London, Ian set about creating his eponymous company along with fellow designer Peter Tague. “We converted a spare bedroom in the house, started up very small, made a collection, went to show it at a show in Germany and got a full order book. At that moment it [went] from being a dream into ‘this is really tangible and we now have to finance these orders and put them into production and actually make these dresses’. So it made it very, very real.” The Collection Designed by Ian Stuart launched the following year in West Dulwich and has since earned Ian the Bridal Designer of the Year award five times. “Seeing [my own company] get off the ground was a really proud moment because I felt that finally I was free and I didn’t have the restrictions and constraints that working for another company has.You only have to answer to yourself.” Ian’s dresses aren’t for every bride; it takes a strong personality and style to pull off his more daring designs. Just take his bestever selling flower bomb dress as a case in point. Flower bomb, which Ian describes as encompassing all the magic ‘Ian Stuart’

ingredients, burst onto the bridal scene in 2011 and was an instant hit. Such was its success, it featured in the 2014 wedding dress exhibition at the Victoria & Albert Museum alongside dresses worn by Kate Moss, Dita Von Teese and Camilla Parker Bowles. His latest collections, while still heavily featuring this signature style, have travelled in a more demure direction, with 1950s-inspired short styles and dresses with smoother, cleaner silhouettes. They latter may look easier to make than their frothier counterparts, but Ian admits they were even more challenging. “Those dresses look the simplest but they’re actually the most difficult because the draping is so complicated and the dresses are so plain, you can’t hide any mistakes with decorations,” he admits. In April, he’ll no doubt wow yet again with a new shape of dress that would look as good down the aisle as it would on the red carpet. Alongside these Oscar-worthy designs, he’s also been experimenting with some interesting fabric and lace combinations. And his love affair with colour continues with some multi-coloured pastel creations that only he could pull off with style. Unsurprisingly, given his passion for theatre and music, Ian’s favourite job is presenting these new collections and showcasing them with a good dose of his trademark flamboyance. “There’s always a runway show that’s just happened, then there’s the next one to plan ahead for so that’s constantly on my mind,” he says. “I love perfecting that. I love the whole presentation of it, from the music to the set design to the styling of the models.” Since 2007, these shows have not only featured his bridalwear but also his muchloved occasionwear collection Ian Stuart London. And it is these two pillars of Ian’s

career that led him to launch his first flagship store, Blewcoat, last June, which was officially opened by the man who gave Ian his break, David Sassoon. Whether brides are shopping at Blewcoat or one of the boutiques hand-selected exclusively by Ian to stock his dresses – or, indeed, when buying any wedding dress – Ian is outspoken about his dislike for online wedding dress shopping and implores every bride to visit a boutique to find the right style rather than scouring the internet. “You need to be able to see what you’re going to buy in reality and you need to be able to look inside it and know that it’s got the correct construction that’s going to flatter your body,” he says. “When a girl goes into a bridal salon, she’s given expert advice by the sales consultants that will give her guidance and help to eliminate the dresses that are not working for her. The internet is not going to be able to fit you in the dress and do your alterations. It’s not going to advise you on
bridesmaid colours and how to pull it all together. I think it also ruins the whole experience for the bride because it’s a oncein-a-lifetime thing and it should be a pleasurable experience.” For a man who has dedicated his life to ensuring women look and feel their very best on one of the most important days of their life, it’s easy to see why he remains so passionate about doing things the right way. And still, no matter how many brides have sashayed down the aisle on their big day in an Ian Stuart gown, the designer has never tired of seeing it happen. “I feel really happy and proud that somebody had so much choice but they ended up getting one of [my dresses] when there are so many other ones to choose from,” he says. “That feeling when you see someone in one of your designs, it never goes away.” Visit www.ianstuart-bride.com to find your nearest stockist.

Little slice of luxury The ancient arts of relaxation are perfected at Harrogate Turkish Baths & Health Spa – ideal for a pre-wedding treat.
T
he stresses and strains of everyday life inevitably take their toll on our body and mind. And whilst languorous holidays in the sun, extended breaks from work or new hobbies can provide superlative tonics to such busy lifestyles, sometimes a little slice of luxury is all we need to relax, unwind, and set ourselves back on track. Harrogate Turkish Baths & Health Spa specialises in exactly this. Since 1897, this haven of relaxation has been the perfect retreat for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle and unwind their mind while invigorating their body. Upon opening, the Royal Baths – as the premier listed building is known – was

declared the world’s most advanced centre for hydrotherapy and drew royal international acclaim, including from Queen Victoria’s granddaughters. sulphur and peat baths, electric hydrotherapy baths. The saline sulphur bath was in fact the treatment on which Harrogate’s reputation as a premium spa town was built. Used to treat gout, rheumatism, hepatic disorders and skin diseases, it harnessed the power of the town’s rich variety of waters, which were supplied by the Montpellier Estate. What has gloriously remained from those early days is the sheer spectacle of the place. Thanks to a £10million investment in the Royal Baths building – including a £1million refurbishment of the Turkish baths – the preservation and restoration of this Victorian marvel has allowed a modern audience to appreciate its splendour, with three hot rooms, a steam room, a rest area, a plunge pool and a winter garden lounge. Today, the efficacy of the baths is enhanced even further by a host of exemplary treatments, including four brand new experiences for 2016. The state-of-the-art Sublime Skin Deluxe Lift facial (70mins £90) is ideal for mature or uneven skin. Its active lift massage An historic picture of the baths
stimulates cellular regeneration, before a double peel followed by an innovative biphasic peel-off mask reveals smoother, radiant, more youthful skin. The advanced mask in the powerful Sublime Skin Active Lift facial (55mins £70) helps to oxygenate skin cells and gives an instant firming effect, resulting in beautifully nourished, illuminated, fuller and lifted skin. Mr Richard Hutson is a consultant gynaecologist at Spire Leeds Hospital and Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust. He is a regional specialist in complex, gynaecological cancer surgery. Question: I am a 54-year-old woman. A few months ago I started to suffer from pain in my lower stomach and often feel bloated and overfull. I have not seen my GP about this as some days are fine and I thought it might go away in time. However, the problems have persisted and I am worried it might be a sign of something more serious? Mr Hutson replies: It is relatively common for women to feel bloated and complain of abdominal distension particularly just prior to menstruation and most women experience varying degrees of discomfort during their period. However, if these symptoms do not resolve after the period, or the abdominal distension and pain is getting worse and you are feeling full after eating relatively small quantities of food then you should see your GP urgently. This is because you could have a pelvic mass, which may be either benign or malignant and could be arising from either your ovary or womb (uterus). The risk of cancer in a mass causing these symptoms is in the order of 30-40 per cent.It is likely your GP will request a blood test (CA125) and an urgent pelvic ultrasound scan. CA125 is a tumour marker which increases with the more common types of ovarian cancer; this must not be taken if you are menstruating as it may give rise to a falsely raised level. The scan will assess your gynaecological organs looking for fibroids or ovarian masses. Clearly, if there is any abnormality your GP should fast track your referral and you should be seen in two weeks if cancer is suspected.

Something old, something new Just where – and why – did our modern wedding traditions originate? Phoebe Seymour delves into the past.
A
h, white weddings. Traditions such as the gorgeous dress, the towering cake, and walking down the aisle are what a brides-to-be’s dreams are made of. It may sound like a cocktail for the perfect wedding ceremony now, but if you got hitched a few hundred years ago when these traditions were in their infancy, you’d probably find them less than romantic. From warding off evil spirits, to stopping runaway brides, here are just a few of the reasons why we celebrate weddings in the way we do.
ORIGINS OF MARRIAGE So, why do we get married at all? The concept of marriage is about 4,350 years old. Anthropologists believe that before then, families consisted of large groups (around 30) of loosely related people, with several male leaders sharing a number of women and children. As hunter-gatherers started to settle into civilisations and nurture the land, they wanted smaller and more stable family units. Marriage’s primary purpose was to bind women to men, and guarantee that a man’s children were truly his. The first recorded marriage ceremonies between one woman and one man date back to 2350 BC, in Mesopotamia. Over the following several hundred years, marriage evolved into an institution recognised by the ancient Hebrews, Greeks, and Romans. Interestingly, marriage had little to do with religion or love to begin with. Love became a motivating factor during the Middle Ages, whilst marriage was accepted as a sacrament by the Catholic church in the 8th century. Marriage was then written into canon law at the Council of Trent in 1563. It was only later that the western world started adopting the wedding traditions we know today.
THE WHITE DRESS NS • page 48
Contrary to popular belief, the white dress wasn’t chosen to represent the purity and innocence of the bride, but became fashionable after Queen Victoria wore white for her wedding. Victoria (the trend-setting Kardashian of her time) wore a plain white dress to marry Prince Albert in 1840 simply because she liked the colour. But, she wasn’t the first... Mary Queen of Scots wore white to marry Dauphin François of France in 1558. However, this was considered scandalous at the time, as white was traditionally worn by royal ladies in mourning. The veil and train, on the other hand, originated in Roman times. Roman brides were swaddled from head to toe in a gigantic flame-coloured veil called the flammeum as it was believed its fiery appearance would scare off evil spirits. Similarly, bouquets used to contain garlic and dill, and bridesmaids wore similar dresses to the bride to confuse and ward off evil spirits. The veil and train also prevented brides from running away from their grooms – and vice versa, as the bride’s face would usually only be revealed to him at the end of the ceremony.

THE CAKE
CHALLENGING TRADITIONS Some of our wedding traditions are so well established in our society, we forget about the loopholes and how fluid marriage laws can be. Here are a couple of examples of wedding customs tipped on their heads:
LEAP DAY According to an old Irish legend, St Brigid struck a deal with St Patrick to allow women to propose to men. The catch? They could only do so every four years on Leap Day – 29 February. Many women still think men should be the ones to do the proposing, but we say don’t wait for permission. Be a leading lady... and don’t forget that there’s one this year!
There are several possible reasons why we have tiered wedding cakes. In Ancient Rome, bread was broken over the bride’s head to bring the couple good fortune and in Medieval England, cakes were stacked as high as possible for the bride and groom to kiss over. From the mid-1600s, a bride’s pie was served at most weddings. It was considered rude and bad luck not to eat it. This was eventually replaced with a bride cake made of plums or fruit cake, symbolic of fertility and prosperity. Two cakes were then made – one for the bride and one for the groom. The groom would have a fruit cake which was usually smaller than the brides, whilst the bride had a simple pound cake covered in white icing. And this is where the trend-setting Queen Vic comes in again. Sugar was very expensive, so icing really showed off the social standing and wealth of the family. When Victoria used white icing on her cake, she coined the term Royal Icing. The first modern, tiered wedding cake appeared at Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany’s wedding in 1882.
SOMETHING OLD, NEW, BORROWED AND BLUE This tradition is believed to date back to 1898 and comes from an Old English rhyme which says, “Something olde, something new, something borrowed, something blue, a sixpence in your shoe”, all of which are lucky charms carried by the bride on the big day. Something old represents continuity; something new offers optimism for the future; something borrowed symbolises borrowed happiness; something blue stands for purity, love, and fidelity; and a sixpence in your shoe is a wish for good fortune and prosperity, although this last tradition does not seem to have stood the test of time. In return, guests were traditionally given five prettily-wrapped almonds to represent fertility, longevity, wealth, health and happiness as favours. Nowadays, we tend to use anything from the classic sugared almonds, to CDs, to lottery tickets.

MEN WHO MARRIED MEN You may think gay marriage is a new concept, but you’d be wrong. Roman Emperor Nero, who ruled between 54 and 68AD, twice married men in formal wedding ceremonies. Homosexual weddings were common in second and third century Rome, but worried many people including social commentator Juvenal, who pointed out that male “brides” would never be able to “hold their husbands by having a baby”, and the Romans outlawed formal homosexual unions in the year 342. It’s taken over 1600 years, but same sex marriage was finally legalised in the UK in 2014.

o there is, apparently, a point to stag dos – a reason for the revelry, method in the hedonistic madness. Apparently, the idea is to give the groom an evening of temptation to check he’s fully committed to his forthcoming marriage, to make sure he only has eyes for his bride-to-be, even when surrounded by other beauties. Which justifies the strip clubs and lapdances. Apparently. And then there’s the whole thing about it being the groom’s ‘final night of freedom’, his last wild hurrah before settling down to a life of domesticity. Which explains away the boozing and the vomiting and the terrible, terrible hangovers. Apparently. If we’re honest, these are rather flimsy pretexts. The stag do has long seemed little more than an excuse for doing what (some) Brits do best: getting drunk and behaving inappropriately. But the times, they are achangin’. In the past few years or so, there has been a significant rise in stag dos at which the guests actually… do something. Like, something other than drinking. Revolutionary it may seem, but the ‘activity weekend’ is fast becoming the premarriage pastime of choice. All this is precipitated by the fact that the stag do has replaced what was once the stag night. The hubby-to-be used to simply gather his closest mates for an evening of pints in the pub before the big day. Over time, this transformed into a weekend in Brighton or Blackpool, a mad charabanc of boozy indulgence. Before long stags were travelling further and staying away longer in search of thrills: week-long celebrations in Dublin, in Amsterdam, in the party-loving capitals of Eastern Europe.Vodka flowed freely and pleather G-strings were on permanent display – and that was just the stags… But now? Now British grooms are yelling a collective ‘NOPE!’, putting their feet down en masse at the thought of another pancreaspunishing foreign booze-up. The idea of a long trip away still appeals, but rather than spending

every second of every hour of every day with alcohol in hand, stags want to do something fun instead. The stag do is a way for grooms (and their guests) to blow off steam, so it’s no surprise that many activity-based stag weekends simply move the action from the pub to the sports field. Whether a game of five-a-side football or a brisk round of golf, there are options to suit all tastes. Other activities are dictated by the do’s location: those braving colder climes may wish to hit the ski slopes, while in the Mediterranean sunshine the stag might like to indulge in a spot of watersports. Increasingly, we Brits are letting our famous sense of humour come to the fore when choosing a stag do pastime, resulting in the rise of the ‘novelty sport’. These are games played for laughs: footgolf (swap the golf balls for footballs, bigger holes, use legs not clubs, away you go), goggle football (thick-lensed eyewear makes seeing the ball a challenge; hilarity ensues). The ultimate is zorbing, in which participants are placed in giant inflatable spheres – basically a massive bouncy hamster ball – and rolled down a hill. The dizzying end result is remarkably similar to the after-effects of a traditional stag do. No wonder it’s so popular. The stag do has a reputation as something of a jolly boys’ outing – gangs of Neanderthals shouting “Lager, lager, lager!”, engaging in competitive acts of hooliganism, trying to outlout each other. But there are stag do activities which provide an alternative outlet for all that testosterone. Military-style assault courses offer stags and their guests the opportunity to clamber over walls, swing on ropes and crawl through mud to their heart’s content. And afterwards if they feel like ripping off their shirt and thumping their chest, gorilla-style, that’s fine as well. Not macho enough? Would blasting something with a big gun be better? Increasingly popular stag do activities include clay pigeon shooting and paintball (celebrate the stag’s impending nuptials by shooting them with a pellet!). Stags with the need for speed,
meanwhile, are catered for by a range of motoring experiences: go-karting, stock car racing, blindfolded driving, quad biking, hovercraft racing, the list goes on. Just make sure before you put him behind the steering wheel that the would-be groom doesn’t have cold feet – wedding jitters are normal, but it’s not easy trying to tempt someone back to the altar when they’re zooming away from you at 94 mph. A stag do doesn’t have to be all adrenaline, however. For those of a more cultural bent, the trip abroad could comprise an educational sightseeing tour, or take in a theatre show or comedy club performance (watch out for the best man taking notes for his speech). And if a booze-free stag do is simply unthinkable, how about taking a classier approach with a wine or champagne tasting? Just remember you’re supposed to spit it out afterwards… There is, however, another way. A new prewedding trend is growing in popularity, and it’s a big break from the traditional. The ‘hag do’ is a joint bash between guests from both halves of the wedding party (hence the name: ‘hen’ plus ‘stag’). It may take the form of an activity weekend, but more often than not it’s simply an excuse for a shared shindig. Critics of the stag do will no doubt be pleased to see it moving away from the drunken debauchery it’s been associated with in the past. Now instead of tearing up towns and cities with their inebriated antics, stags are more likely to be running or racing or shooting an air rifle in the safe confines of a field somewhere. Some may see the hag do as another way of curtailing the shenanigans of rowdy stags – a means for the bride-to-be to keep an eye on her betrothed and rein in his booze intake. But let’s keep a sense of perspective and equality to all this. To anyone who’s ever witnessed the unique spectacle that is the hen do – naked butlers, tequila shots and phallic drinking straws as far as the eye can see – it’s not the bride who should be worried about the groom, but the other way around…

hen you are imagining how your dream kitchen will look, you need a team of designers who can turn your ideas into reality. Whilst some kitchen companies set limitations on your ideas, the design consultants at truKitchen are always eager to explore a number of possibilities, whilst remaining mindful of the shape and style of your home. Once you’ve had a consultation, you can even clearly visualise your dream kitchen with their photo-realistic plans. Furthermore, truKitchen provides a number of finishes other companies don’t, such as kiln blown glass splashbacks and natural slate furniture doors, as well as working with the finest appliances including Miele, Neff, Siemens, Sub-Zero, Wolf, Quooker and many more. truKitchen design and install exquisite bespoke kitchens across the north of England, with showrooms in Wilmslow and more recently in Harrogate. They offer a tailored design service, taking projects from concept to final completion to the highest possible standard. There is a bespoke kitchen to suit every taste from the

minimalistic, contemporary ranges by German manufacturer Rempp, to the traditional handpainted Hamilton-Drake range. Claudia Granata is the showroom manager and design consultant at the Harrogate branch. She has worked in the kitchen industry for a number of years, previously running her own showroom up until the retirement of her business partner, and specialises in designing precisionengineered German kitchens. Claudia joined the team after the store opened in September 2015 and says they pride themselves on their personal service: “Every member of our team is an experienced and valued designer, who enjoys sharing ideas. We put a lot of thought into clients plans and work closely with them every step of the way to create their dream kitchen.” However, if you are looking for some guidance, Rempp has recently launched the X-line range. This new handleless range offers a chic and contemporary look. And if you really want to be on-trend, neutral tones will continue to be popular in 2016. White, neutral and grey make a subtle and sophisticated contrast, but don’t be afraid to inject some colour with a feature wall and
complement it with some warm units such as the Lech range in a chocolate oak finish. But it is not only the high-quality appliances, on-trend designs and the team’s knowledge based on years of experience that makes truKitchen so successful. Retail director Tracey Mackey says it’s about being there every step of the way: “People need someone they can trust, someone who can guide them through the development process and understand the intricacies involved in complete project management. Our designer’s role is also to be that guide; assessing architectural drawings, liaising with builders, providing a schedule for installation and ensuring the plan stays on track. “We do much more than just that though, we provide an unrivalled level of support to our clients who value the care and attention we give to every project.” Whether you want a full service or need a team to work with your own builders, talk to truKitchen. Moorfield School Moorfield School in Ilkley goes the second mile to support busy parents. They can rest assured that their children are well looked after for extended hours both during term time and in the holidays. Moorfield’s very well attended Holiday Club runs for 14 weeks throughout the year. It is expertly led, allowing a fine balance between stimulation and relaxation, focused activities and time for play. Days are filled with wonderful seasonal activities both indoors and outside as well as trips out on the school bus to favourite places in the area. A sense of community is built with all the children socialising happily together and friendships developing between children across the school age range. Many children attend because they love coming rather than out of necessity. During term time, wraparound care operates from 7.45am to 6.15pm. “Moorfield’s warmth and vibrancy extends into almost every week of the year. We both love Holiday Club” - a parent, 2015. 11 Ben Rhydding Road, Ilkley, LS29 8RL Tel: 01943 607285 www.moorfieldschool.co.uk

Another level Westville House School governors launch a visionary £1million development programme.
I
n a recent exciting announcement the governors of Westville House School unveiled a visionary expansion programme, which will take this everpopular and successful school forward into the next decade The scheme will encompass a brand new, purpose-built Early Years unit, which will house the nursery and reception classrooms, both of which will have free flowing access to the outdoor play areas including a new playground. A new hub will be built to link the Early Years with the main school and sports hall and this will become the heart of the school, through which everyone will pass each day. A new large library and media suite will be developed along with a futuristic ICT suite and whole school ICT upgrade. New learning support and medical rooms, new admin offices, much improved car parking along with scheduled investment in outstanding teaching and learning resources will ensure the school continues to be forward thinking and have the needs of every single child at heart. The whole school will also benefit from a complete refurbishment, with redecoration, new flooring and furniture. The chairman of the board of Westville Governors and Trustees, Neil Brown, introduced the new plans. “Westville House School is already an outstanding school in terms of the care afforded to each child, the extensive opportunities open to all children and the quality of education that each child receives,” he said. “As we open a new chapter in the history of the school, with the advent of the new headmaster, we felt the time was right to build on previous successes and take this wonderful school into the next decade by offering the very best in educational excellence for every child.” Ian Shuttleworth, who took over as
NS • page 88
headmaster in September, described the plans as a tremendous programme of investment for the school. “This will undoubtedly benefit every single child that we welcome here. Our desire to develop the skills and talents of each child is paramount and is underlined in the school principles: for every child to be the best version of themselves. The development plans for Westville House will ensure that we provide the very best in independent education in the region.” The school's dining room will be one of the first areas to benefit as work begins at Easter. There is a great tradition of family style dining at Westville with choices of food for every child. The new dining room will be open and bright, and will offer a wonderful atmosphere to continue this tradition. The whole Westville community is now actively involved in the final parts of
fundraising, which is creating a real sense of team spirit. The first phase of the development – the new Reception and Nursery facilities – is due to open in September 2016, with other developments following on. Families with young children are welcome to visit the school on Saturday 5 March, when the school will be hosting a spring open morning. Staff will be on hand to show and explain the plans whilst children have a fun getting involved in the Toddler Triathlon, egg decorating and rolling and lots of other spring activities. . A vision for every pupil Woodhouse Grove School’s new headmaster is determined to give all his students an outstanding all-round education.
W
oodhouse Grove School welcomes its eighteenth headmaster, Mr James Lockwood, to the school this term. Mr Lockwood, who returns to the school where he was a pupil over 20 years ago, is very clear about his vision for the school. “It is my aim to unlock the potential of each individual by offering every pupil lifechanging opportunities and an environment in which academic excellence is promoted through learning and shared experiences. I want our pupils to experience an outstanding, all-round and full education at the heart of which are the academic qualifications of which they are fully capable. Every individual child in this School counts; I ask nothing more from them than that they have the courage to be, not ordinary, but extraordinary and to strive to do their very best. I want them all to be confident and proud of their academic achievements and to believe that there is no glass ceiling to their academic attainment. In short, my aim is for academic excellence but also to promote a whole range of cultural and sporting opportunities. We promise to provide first class pastoral care and are committed to teaching important values of leadership, service and spiritual awareness. We are dedicated to providing an environment in which your children can thrive and will strive to maximise their potential, firing their imagination and encouraging independence of thought.”

In his first term at the school we are delighted to report a record number of pupils registering for places in September 2016. The school has also been ranked top (for average points per pupil in the sixth form) out of all independent schools in Leeds and Bradford in the recently published A Level results tables. Mr Lockwood concluded “I feel sure that the record number of pupils registering for September is a reflection of the growing reputation of Woodhouse Grove. The opening of the Apperley Bridge train station across the road is an exciting development as well and will, I am sure, attract more interest in the School. These are exciting times for Woodhouse Grove!” To organise a visit to the school and meet Mr Lockwood please email Tara Gilks gilks.tv@woodhousegrove.co.uk Woodhouse Grove School, Apperley Lane, Bradford, BD10 0NR Tel: 0113 250 2477 www.woodhousegrove.co.uk

Moorlands School On visiting Moorlands you can’t help but be overwhelmed by the passion the pupils have for their school and their desire to fulfil the school motto ‘Intrepide’ in everything that they do. This can be something as small as trying a Brussels sprout or competing in the local park run, but still the pupil’s commitment and passion to support the motto is clearly evident in their lives, inside and outside the school. If you follow the school’s Twitter page, @MoorlandsHead, you can see the scope and diversity of the challenges the pupils set themselves. The school is conveniently located off the ring road at Weetwood Lane, yet situated in beautiful grounds, which provide all the outdoor space required for children to play in a safe and secure environment. The school boasts fantastic wraparound care facilities, excellent teaching standards, an on-site swimming pool and small class sizes. Why not visit to see for yourself? The pupils would love to show you around their school. Foxhill Drive,Weetwood Lane, Leeds, LS16 5PF Tel: 0113 278 5286 www.moorlands-school.co.uk

Harrogate Ladies’ College Harrogate Ladies’ College (HLC) pioneered girls’ education in the north of England and today provides outstanding teaching, strong pastoral support and a secure, friendly community. HLC aims to ensure that each girl reaches their full potential and develops both a passion for learning and a love of life. They offer a wide choice of 22 GCSE and 27 A Level subjects and an extensive extra-curriculum programme. There is a wide-reaching daily bus service for day pupils and flexible boarding options including occasional, weekly and termly. The Sixth Form offers girls a more independent style of learning. There is a focus on individual research and girls are allocated their own private study, away from the main teaching areas of the school. Class sizes are small and the individual support the Sixth Formers receive is outstanding. A Level results in 2015 meant that over 80 per cent of students secured a place at university and 52 per cent secured places at Russell Group universities. NS Easter
Chocolate heaven!
Our tasters give their guide to the most deliciously indulgent Easter eggs on offer this year.
F
ew things in life bring more joy than tearing into an Easter egg to reveal what tasty treats lie inside. At this time of year, the shelves are brimming with chocolately treats – which presents something of a dilemma when it comes to choosing what to get who. To help out those in such a pickle, our tasting panel put their heads together and put a selection of this year’s eggs to the test. Some may be a bit eggsessive – but they’re a crackin’ bunch. (Geddit?)
OUR Hotel W INNER Chocolat extra-thick rocky road to caramel egg 500g, £27 Beautifully presented in a luxurious hatbox this devilishly thick egg has everything. With one half milk chocolate with cookies, puffed rice and chocolate chunks, and the other caramel-milk chocolate, it is indulgent without being sickly sweet. There is also a fabulous selection of 12 chocolates, which includes delights such as a hot cross bun and a billionaire’s shortbread. Perfect for adults, wonderfully playful and great to share, too.
Best for kids Morrisons large dinosaur Roary 250g, £4 Children love nothing more than novelty chocolate, and when it’s animal-shaped, it seems to taste all the more delicious. While the quality of chocolate won’t blow you away, this cute grinning toothy critter will prove a hit with the kids.
Best for allergies Sainsbury’s Freefrom egg 125g, £3.50 Egg free, gluten free, wheat free, milk free… while the panel applauded this egg for offering those with allergies the chance to be involved in the choctivities, it didn’t quite have the same depth of regular chocolate. On the plus side, at £3.50 for an egg and some chocolate discs, it’s a steal.
Words: Stephanie Burns and Fiona Barber
Best organic option Montezuma’s organic milk chocolate button egg 250g, £9.99 With adorable bunny packaging and a generous portion of buttons, this egg made a great first impression. On the downside, the thickness of the buttons meant they didn’t instantly melt in the mouth, but the chocolate egg was redeeming with a moreish light, creamy texture. If it’s organic and British you’re after, this is your egg.
Best for stylish friends Tesco Finest milk chocolate square egg 300g, £8 The contemporary design was an instant hit with the panel and the contents did not disappoint either. The thickness of this egg made it difficult to break into but – oh boy – it was definitely worth the effort. With a creamy taste similar to Galaxy chocolate, this stylish egg was a real hit and is something any milk chocolate lover would be delighted to receive.

Best ornamental value Bettys medium milk chocolate spring flowers egg 350g, £25 This grown-up Easter treat is clearly a labour of love and the attention to detail is easy to appreciate. With a glossy finish and delicate hand-painted floral decorations, this was almost too pretty to break into. After taking the plunge, our panel discovered strong cocoa flavours ideal for those in search of a high-quality chocolate fix and, while it comes with a heftier price tag than some others, it would make an ideal gift for that someone special.
Best for family fun Cadbury Dairy Milk decorate with icing 100g, £4 With a delicious Dairy Milk egg, icing pen and a small stand to balance your egg on while decorating, this great value-for-money egg is perfect for keeping the kids entertained. Let them doodle on their own egg or even decorate one to give as a gift. Tasty and fun – what more can you ask for?
Best to impress Booja Booja hazelnut crunch truffles large egg 138g, £17.95 With a stunning blue casing, delicate floral designs and a luxurious velvet lining, this is one truly classy egg. The truffles are dairy free, organic and gluten free, but with a silky-smooth chocolate, toasted hazelnuts and an angelic dusting of cocoa powder, which offset the sweetness of the truffle, they are in no way lacking. Perfect to take along as a gift if you are at the in-laws for Easter lunch and the gorgeous velvet egg-shaped casing could be kept for use as a jewellery box.
Best for a super sweet tooth Waitrose caramel and fudge egg 185g, £7 Not for the faint hearted, this indulgent egg was an instant hit for the sugar-lovers on the panel. With milk chocolate making up one half of the egg and a dark caramel chocolate for the other, it is also ideal for those in search of variety. Packed with chewy caramel throughout and sprinkled with chunky fudge pieces, self control is needed to avoid overindulgence.
Best for white chocolate lovers Nestlé Milkybar milk and cookies 162g, £3 Any fan of white chocolate will enjoy the sumptuous creaminess of this and the cookie pieces add a welcome crunchy texture. The shell also wasn’t too thick, making it ideal for any parents looking to limit their children’s chocolate intake over Easter.
Best for dark chocolate lovers Green and Black’s organic dark 70 per cent 165g ,£6.59 For those who find milk or white just a little too sweet this is an ideal alternative. While the panel agreed the chocolate was high quality and featured a nice strong flavour, the accompanying fruity fragrance caused a split of opinions. Some thought it added another dimension, while others found it overpowering. Nevertheless, this is an intense indulgence with the bonus of being organic.

Beautiful Chinese drawing room is a stunning start for Temple Newsam’s new curator After weeks of painstaking protection and preservation, Temple Newsam House’s Chinese drawing room, along with the rest of the Tudor Jacobean mansion, is almost ready to open to the public for the spring and summer. Also known as The Blue Drawing Room, the stunning room was almost entirely decorated by Lady Isabella Hertford, who lived at Temple Newsam in the 1820s. The extravagant hand-painted wallpaper covered with colourful, exotic birds was a gift from the then Prince of Wales. 20 years later, when she came to put it on the walls, Lady Hertford decided it needed to be more lively, and pasted on birds cut out from her copy of John James Audubon’s famous book Birds of America. NS Technology
Make your home a future-ready ‘smart home’ with the help of Finite Solutions.
I
ntegrating smart technology into your home not only greatly enhances your family’s entertainment options, but it can also dramatically improve security, efficiency, convenience and ease of use of many everyday functions in your household. Simon Mathieson of Leeds-based home technology company Finite Solutions talks through how the latest technology can futureproof your home. As an award-winning home technology integrator the first discussion we have with most clients is how to future-proof their homes so that they can capitalise on new technology in years to come. Whist wireless technology allows more and more smart technologies to function, wireless should still be viewed as a complementary technology, fantastic for hand-held devices and laptops, but still supplementary to installing physical cables during refurbishment or when building a new home. If a carefully considered wiring scheme has been installed from the start, pretty much any technology can be installed later. The only real exception to the scope of future-proof wiring is intelligent lighting control which provides considerable energy saving, ease of use and security benefits. Because it is wired very differently to conventional lighting it must be fitted during a new build or refurbishment. Future proofing your property should always be carefully considered. For your home to be truly smart, the cable infrastructure must take in to account linkage with your heating, alarm, lighting, doors and gates, music and TV systems, telephone, broadband as well as utilities such as electric and gas. Consultation with an expert at the very start of any project is vital to ensure that your long-term requirements are correctly understood and that the systems installed are of the appropriate type to allow smart system integration. As one of the UK’s leading integrators Finite Solutions has a dedicated 4,000 sq. ft award-winning show house in Leeds which allows clients to view all aspects of integrated smart home technology and guide them towards the most appropriate solution for their home and needs.
