In a career spanning almost 60 years, Joe Scarborough has made the journey from jobbing painter selling his 20x24-inch (“The right size to fit on a council house chimney breast”) depictions of northern life, for a fiver, to international recognition as one of England’s foremost and best-loved artists. His works now command prices of many thousands of pounds and adorn the walls of private homes and galleries and museums around the world. His colourful, bold and gloriously unique style continues to delight young and old alike and every age in between. In his own words he is, “an entertainer, a showman, a director of my ensemble cast, and that cast is you”.

INTERVIEW
Going live COMEDY TV STAR TOM ROSENTHAL HAS TURNED HIS TALENTS TO STAND-UP. HE TALKS TO BRUCE DESSAU ABOUT MANHOOD AND MUCH MORE. itcom fans will know Tom Rosenthal for two roles. As Roman Empire nerd Marcus in ITV2’s Plebs and as Jonny, the perpetually adolescent prankster son in C4’s Friday Night Dinner. But now everyone has a chance to see the real Tom Rosenthal in his first-ever tour, Manhood. And fans will definitely be seeing the real Rosenthal onstage. The show is very funny but also very honest and very personal. Manhood is all about the fact that Rosenthal was circumcised as a baby and has suffered from psychological distress about this ever since he first realised what had been done to him. He playfully quips that he is doing the show to “avenge the theft of his foreskin.” Rosenthal has turned his issues into a thoroughly entertaining stand-up show with the help of graphs, statistics, playful jokes and rigid research. He spoke to experts and has thought long and hard – no pun intended – about the subject. Rosenthal has a Jewish background, but he was not brought up to be Jewish and that was not the reason for the circumcision. There was a lot of anger towards his parents when he was younger. “Maybe I’m stuck in adolescence. I don’t know. As soon as I found out what happened to me, I was just constantly searching for a reason that made sense of it and I’ve still not found one. That’s sort of the driving force of the show – going through all the justifications for it being allowed.” He does want to make the point that he is not actually anti-circumcision. “If you want to choose to do it when you’re old enough, go right ahead. It’s like any other kind of body modification, like a tattoo or a piercing. To do it to a child against their will when they cannot take
S
the decision to take that back, it feels as if it’s against our human rights. I want prospective parents to watch my show. Have a nice night out. Laugh with the boy from the sitcoms with the big nose, but also go away thinking ‘maybe that’s not cool actually’.” “I’ve always wanted to tour,” he explains. “The nicest thing about it is getting to meet the people who actually watch the TV programmes I’m in. I’m also really proud of Manhood. It’s a show that I always wanted to make. It has a dual purpose for me. Obviously, I wanted to put on the funniest show that I can. But I also want fans to go away thinking about stuff which most people don’t really think about. It’s something that I think is slightly askew with our culture. I should add that this is not your typical comedy show. Most comedy shows will not be an hour about genital cutting practices!” Rosenthal premiered Manhood at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival last summer to wide acclaim and did some national dates in autumn 2019. Although he finds live performance hard, he is looking forward to hitting the road. “I’m really a molly coddled actor. It has surprised me how tiring live comedy is. Some of my friends seem to be able to walk onstage and just be themselves whereas I’m always nervous. I have the utmost respect for all comedians. I guess by comparison an actor’s life is quite easy.” Not that he doesn’t suffer for his art. He has just finished filming the next series of Friday Night Dinner. His voice is croaky from the long days on set and he pulls up a trouser leg to reveal fresh cuts and bruises. “I had to wear shin pads to protect me where the other characters were kicking me. I think Tamsin (Greig,
who plays his mother) was wearing high heels and kicked me in the wrong place. So actually, for my shins, acting is much harder than stand-up.” The tour marks a new phase in his career. Although he started out as a stand-up, becoming joint winner of the Leicester Mercury Comedian of the Year Award in 2011 after graduating from London University with a Philosophy degree, acting has taken up most of his time in recent years. “I was reluctant to call myself a comedian despite the fact that I did stand-up. I felt like until you’ve done a tour, you can’t call yourself a comedian. So, one semi-benefit of doing Manhood is that now I’m a little bit more comfortable saying I’m a comedian as I’ve gone to towns, people have paid money to see me and I definitely heard some of them laugh.” While the subject matter is personal, Rosenthal thinks that the feelings of alienation he talks about are universal. “I’ve had quite a lot of teenagers coming and I think the story of someone who is at odds with their body is something they can relate to. What makes it interesting though also makes it quite odd.” he chuckles. “The fact that you are watching a guy talking about his penis quite a lot.” We certainly learn a lot about Rosenthal in his distinctively hilarious show. But for those that know him from television who is he really more like, Marcus or Jonny? “I probably feel I’m more Marcus. He’s a neurotic schemer who thinks that he’s smarter than he is. Whereas Jonny is a sort of teenage boy prankster. Ultimately though, if you combine the two that’s my whole terrible personality!” Tom Rosenthal’s Manhood tour brings him to the Leeds City Varieties on 4 March. Kelham Island Museum The museum began welcoming visitors in 1982, serving as a collection of items related to Sheffield’s industrial history. Today, it also provides a stunning setting for weddings and other special occasions, boasting historical charm and an abundance of photo opportunities with unforgettable backdrops. The distinctive Victorian building offers to-be-weds and their loved ones a one-of-a-kind facility in which to celebrate and make lots of precious memories. It includes original features and interactive galleries for guests to view and tales from those who worked throughout the Industrial Revolution. Couples can choose to hold their big day in one of several spaces available, including the Millowners Arms and the main body of the museum. North Yorkshire Moors Railway It’s full steam ahead if you want a wedding setting unlike any other because you can tie the knot on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. Ever since the first legal “I do” on Platform Two of Pickering Station back in July 2016, loved-up couples in search of a unique marriage ceremony have followed suit. The Grade II listed building is surrounded by gleaming steel, burnished teak and the leafy Yorkshire scenery. Demand has been steadily growing thanks to word of mouth from this unusual but captivating setting. After your vows, enjoy drinks on the terrace and pictures on the footplate, before being whisked away on a private steam train to Grosmont. Afternoon tea and refreshments will be served onboard, so help yourself to a finger sandwich or freshly baked fruit scone as the panoramic vistas whisk past outside.
The Crucible If you love a night at the theatre, get married on the Crucible Theatre stage under the beautiful twinkling ceiling or in the floor-to-ceiling windowed Adelphi Room that looks out over Sheffield’s Tudor Square, and host your wedding breakfast in the foyer or studio theatre. If you’re planning a big wedding, the theatre can hold up to 980 guests, all with an excellent view of your vows. You can even hold your ceremony on the set of one of their productions and when possible, take photos in the Lyceum auditorium, a stunning traditional and theatrical backdrop.
Chatsworth House Chatsworth is the perfect place to say “I do” with a spectacular wedding in the heart of the stunning Derbyshire countryside and Peak District. If you are looking for something extra special, then the Chatsworth House wedding is perfect for you. The spectacular Painted Hall is licensed to hold civil ceremonies and civil partnerships and Chatsworth couples will be able to tie the knot on the steps of the Great Stairs in this truly magnificent setting. Whatever the weather, whatever the season, Chatsworth provides the perfect backdrop for your day. From the acres of parkland across the estate to the beautifully maintained garden, you are bound to find your ideal spot for those all-important photos and memories that last a lifetime. Confetti Holmfirth Vineyard Yorkshire might not immediately spring to mind when you think of vineyards, but this seven-acre wine estate produces sensational bottles. Holmfirth Vineyard is truly versatile: you can marry indoors or outdoors, with our favourite choice being a magical twilight blessing among the vines. The photo opportunities are incredible, and it comes with that famously friendly Yorkshire welcome, a range of packages and complete versatility of the vineyard to make your dream wedding come true with bespoke options for an indoor or outdoor ceremony, outdoor blessing or magical twilight wedding.
Waterton Park Hotel
North Shire
What’s so special about Waterton Park Hotel? Oh, not much. It’s only an enormous Georgian island mansion surrounded by a 26-acre lake, accessible by a picture-perfect iron footbridge. In all seriousness, Waterton Park Hotel is one of the north’s coolest and most unusual wedding venues, voted “Yorkshire’s Most Romantic” by the English Wedding Awards in 2019. This isolated paradise has everything a loved-up couple could want for their big day, and the eye-watering vistas don’t stop at the water’s edge either. Once you’re back on dry land, the vivid green parkland stretches out as far as the eye can see. So, after your picturesque wedding reception buffet or BBQ, feel free take a wander back over the bridge and see what delights Waterton Park’s outer reaches have to offer.
A dream wedding is every couple’s fantasy, but what if we told you the ultimate fantasy wedding is waiting for you in God’s Own Country? That’s the aim of North Shire, a pictureperfect family farm set in six acres of rolling countryside. Their big secret is the grassroofed Hobbit house that acts as the bridal suite – North Yorkshire becomes Middle Earth. That’s not all, though, the wedding itself takes on a fairytale enchantment, with fireworks, music and even fire-breathers available to delight and dazzle the wedding party. Once the party’s over, your guests can pick from gypsy caravans, shepherd huts or even bell tents for their accommodation, while you head back to the Shire House for a cosy night in a Hobbit hole under the stars.
Camp Katur A truly unique and rustic wedding venue is something that many couples desire, and our recommendations for you would be Camp Katur. The 250-acre manor estate has the capacity to host weddings in marquees, tipis, yurts and even their very own rustic barn. With a woodland of tall pine trees as your backdrop, what more could you possibly ask for? Camp Katur doesn’t hold a civil weddings license, and most couples go to a registry office a couple of days before their special day to sign the legal documents. You can then hold your ceremony at Camp Katur wherever you like, whenever you want, and how you want, making your ceremony unique and special to you both. 32 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk
Yorkshire Wildlife Park We all know weddings can get a little wild, but not usually this wild. If you’re looking for unusual wedding venues, Yorkshire Wildlife Park is just the place. By partnering up with the four-star Crown Hotel in nearby Bawtry, you can tie the knot surrounded by wildlife. Set against the park’s stunning backdrop, you’ll start your magical day in the park’s panoramic Outlook Suite. Once the ceremony’s finished, it’s time to get up close and personal with the animals, with photos at one of their wildlife reserves – visit the giraffes, lemurs, the tiger walkway or polar exhibit. You and your guests will get the run of the park for two full hours, before the evening’s food and festivities continue in the Outlook Suite or shift into the Tsavo Lodge marquee – the choice is yours.

Scenic setting AS THEIR FAVOURITE LOCAL HAUNT, SAM AND HATTIE HORSFALL HAD NO HESITATION IN CHOOSING THE CONISTON HOTEL FOR THEIR WEDDING CELEBRATIONS.
n 5 May 2019, Sam and Hattie held their countryside wedding at the beautiful Coniston Hotel in Skipton, set within the grounds of a breath-taking 1,400-acre estate. Northside caught up with the newlyweds to discover more about their big day and how the scenic setting stole the hearts of the soon to be bride and groom.
O
When and how did Sam propose?
We had planned a weekend away in Harrogate for my birthday and over dinner one evening he popped the question. We had spent the day browsing all the quaint boutiques and beautiful rings in the jewellers but I never could have imagined what he had planned and that he was about to pop the question.
The Bannister family and incredible team presented such a beautiful setting and bespoke package that was just made for us – we couldn’t refuse. Did you work with any local suppliers?
We wanted a rustic style to our wedding and chose two florists to replicate our vision. Our close friend Katie from Kathleen’s Florist in Burnley prepared our stunning bouquets and dressed the church at Gargrave. While the wonderful Jill from Catkins of Settle was left to her own devises to dress the marquee – and it was nothing short of perfect. We choose Charlotte Boothman from LottieDesigns to capture the day, as we absolutely loved her work and personality when she photographed my cousin’s wedding. She really encapsulates the moment and managed to inject a lot of fun into the proceedings, too. Her partner, Dave owns Dave Bone Films and joined us to capture the celebrations on film, so that we can always relive those special moments.
Why did you choose a wedding at The Coniston Hotel?
What did you wear?
It’s our favourite local haunt. We did look around a couple of other venues but we were drawn back to the Coniston each time as it really meant something to us.
It’s actually a funny story; as the dress I wore on the day was the very first dress I tried on, but not the very first dress I bought. As time went on, my gut feeling told me I’d bought

the wrong dress and so I took my very honest sister along to a fitting – and rightly so, as the moment she saw me she said: “no way”. A couple more dresses and a lot of tears later, I fell back in love with the original dress, which was Eden by Ella Rosa from Lulu Browns of Whalley. The staff were simply amazing and helped me finish my ensemble with beautiful accessories.
“We did look around a couple of other venues but we were drawn back to the Coniston each time as it really meant something to us.”
What about the finishing touches? Did you have a theme in mind?
We set a country theme, as we both love the outdoors and being part of our local farming community and intertwined a number of personal touches into to the day; one being Sam’s pride and joy (and work horse), his tractor. Our family shares a love for cars and so my dad’s esteemed collection, which included his brand-new Ferrari, acted as our wedding cortège. We also love a proper Sunday roast and so our main meal consisted of a joint of beef per table – but with a twist. Each came with a personal carver who wore a pinafore and chef ’s hat, which injected a bit of fun into the evening. Our personal highlight was the firework display that took place over the beautiful Coniston Lake. It had been arranged in secret by my mum and was a spectacular surprise for everyone, including Sam and me.

Stylishly unique THE PHEASANT HOTEL IN HAROME IS A STUNNING SETTING FOR YOUR WEDDING OR SPECIAL CELEBRATION. idden away in the quaint North Yorkshire village of Harome, overlooking the duck pond, sits the Pheasant Hotel, a former blacksmiths shop that still holds much of its original rustic charm. In recent years the hotel has fast become a foodie paradise with its awardwinning restaurant building up a stellar reputation largely by word of mouth but particularly since scooping the top spot for the much coveted ‘Best Restaurant 2017’ at the Welcome to Yorkshire White Rose Awards. In 2019 they won the Bronze Award in these prestigious awards – this time in the ‘Taste of England’ category – which takes them through to the national finals in June. Head Chef/Owner Peter Neville – who draws upon his experience gained when working for Claude Bosi at Hibiscus in London and, nearer to home, with Andrew Pern at The Star Inn – owns and runs the Pheasant with his business partner Jacquie Pern. Peter cooks what he likes to eat himself and his menus have evolved over the years to reflect his interests in foraged ingredients and local produce, which culminates in dishes with fresh, clean, deceptively simple flavours and presentation. The front of house team and the smooth running of the hotel is expertly led by Jacquie, whose exquisite taste and keen eye for stylish interior detail can be seen throughout. REAL WEDDINGS
Sunshine celebration THE OPPORTUNITY TO HOST THEIR WEDDING BREAKFAST OUTSIDE MOVED THE PHEASANT AT HAROME TO THE TOP OF SAM AND VIRGINIA JAMIESON’S LIST. am and Virginia said “I do” on a balmy Saturday in September at the stunning Pheasant Hotel, nestled in the picturesque North Yorkshire village of Harome. Here, they tell Northside what led them to fall head over heels with the 18th century venue (and each other) and to planning their dream day at one of the region’s most spectacular locations.
S
How did you meet?
We both moved to York a number of years ago and met through mutual friends when they introduced us at a party, and we’ve been inseparable ever since. When and how did Sam propose?
Sam planned an incredible proposal. We travelled to Lake Como in Italy and on the first night we were looking out over the lake from our balcony – with mountains in the background and lights glistening on the water – and that was the moment he asked me to be his wife. He took my breath away and I said “yes” instantly. We spent the rest of our stay exploring and enjoying our time together as an engaged couple, it was unforgettable. Why did you choose a wedding at The Pheasant Hotel?
My family have been regulars at The Pheasant for some years now and the warm welcome we always receive combined with the beautiful setting made the decision easy. We also wanted to host our wedding breakfast outside, to capture a real sense of being back in Italy and their sun-soaked terrace and grounds were the perfect space to do that. As we had dined at The Pheasant many times before, we were familiar with the layout and were confident that it would work well for us and our guests. We met with the owner, Jacquie, frequently on the lead up to the day and constantly discussed the finer details and any changes so we both knew exactly what was expected. This really helped to settle my nerves and resulted in the venue 46 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

choice and planning being the least stressful components of the entire experience. Tell us a little bit about your big day.
Our ceremony was held at Hovingham Church. It was important to us both to have a small and intimate wedding with only close family and friends in attendance. Hovingham provided the informal feel we wanted so beautifully and we lined the aisle with candlelit lanterns and stunning gypsophila. Large trees framed the altar, surrounded by more candlelight to create a romantic setting and when we said our vows it felt like it was only Sam and I in the room. It was a very special moment. At the top of the list for our reception was to hold our wedding breakfast on the outdoor terrace and so we put our trust in the Great British weather. As luck would have it, it was a glorious day and our photographer, Chris Milner, was brilliant at capturing the moments we will treasure forever. Our wedding flowers were supplied locally by Kymm Queen, who was incredible at turning our ideas into amazing arrangements. My particular favourite was the canopy of florets over the terrace, which Kymm created by hand and looked stunning.
are looking forward to returning to celebrate our first wedding anniversary, and to reminiscing on such a memorable and special day. We would like to say a huge thank to Jacquie, Peter and all the team at The Pheasant for everything they did to make our wedding day not only unforgettable for us, but such a happy occasion for all of our friends and family.
Did you set a theme?
We wanted a traditional British wedding with subtle Italian influences, as we love to visit as often as we can and enjoy so much of the culture. There were nods to Italy and in particular our trip to Lake Como reflected through many of the finer details, such as the wine, foliage arrangements, table names and music throughout the afternoon and early evening. With the help of Jacquie, we captured the essence of an Italian late summer in a rural North Yorkshire setting. One that was also accessible to all of our older family members – it really was the best of both worlds. What did you eat?
Chef-patron Peter Neville served up a smorgasbord of mouth-watering food and all our guests commented on how delicious every dish was. On arrival we were greeted with champagne and a stunning selection of canapés, with just some of our favourites including the incredibly moreish ham hock fritters and goats cheese quiche. The wedding breakfast showcased a spectacular king prawn and heritage tomato cocktail, followed by a main of melt-in-the-mouth 60-day aged fillet of beef with pommes Anna. Rounding off a delightful dining experience was a silky strawberry and vanilla cream dessert with sorbet. Everything was just perfect and we could not have asked for anything more. What would say to other couples thinking of planning a wedding at The Pheasant Hotel?
The Pheasant provided us with everything we could have hoped for: a beautiful venue, delicious food, impeccable service, and even a sunshine-filled afternoon. The team were pivotal in helping us to achieve our dream wedding and Jacquie was incredible; helping to providing us with all the options and ideas available – nothing was too much trouble. We booked the entire hotel (including all of the bedrooms) as we wanted our guests to fully relax and enjoy the weekend and the entire team could not have made the experience easier – even when we were faced with last-minute changes. We could not recommend The Pheasant highly enough and Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk 47

Ring in the new year DO YOU KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ENGAGEMENT RINGS AND WEDDING RINGS? AND DO YOU NEED BOTH? RACHEL MARTIN ANSWERS YOUR EIQUETTE QUESTIONS.
o, your partner chose the perfect engagement ring – big congratulations are in order. But what’s really the difference between engagement rings and wedding rings? And, if you love your engagement ring so much, do you also need to get a coordinating wedding ring to match? Can you simply wear your engagement ring after you’re married instead, or would that be bucking tradition a bit too much? Is it acceptable to even wear your wedding band on the opposite ring finger? We’re here to weigh in on all your burning engagement and wedding ring etiquette questions.
S
Engagement Ring vs. Wedding Ring: What’s the difference? Traditional engagement rings characteristically have one dominant stone, which either stands alone or is surrounded by additional smaller stones. An engagement ring is usually given as part of the proposal, or if not, at an early point in the engagement. By contrast, a wedding ring is usually a plain metal band or a diamond-encrusted eternity band 54 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk
that you receive during the wedding ceremony and wear from then on. Additionally, there’s also a major price difference between traditional engagement and wedding rings. Even if the wedding ring has stones, their total carat weight is usually less than the engagement ring and for that reason, a wedding ring costs significantly less than an engagement ring. You can, of course, throw tradition out the window. According to industry experts, women are now having more of a say in the designing of their ring and not only are brides parting with tradition, but they’re opting to diversify their engagement and wedding ring selections, with wedding bands offering the opportunity to embrace more flair.
The history of engagement and wedding rings Since ancient Egyptian times, engagement rings have been regarded as a symbol of love and commitment; their rings crafted out of plants growing along the Nile River. The ancient Romans were the first to place the engagement ring on the left ring finger, believing it directly connected to the heart and in 1477,

“Traditionally, you wear your engagement ring and wedding ring stacked on the fourth finger of your left hand. As far as how to stack them: tradition holds that the bride wears the wedding band inside the engagement ring so that it’s closer to her heart.” Archduke Maximillian presented the first recorded diamond engagement ring to his beloved Mary of Burgundy. Before this event, engagement rings consisted mostly of plain metal bands or less expensive gemstones. Maximillian’s diamond ring sparked a trend in Europe and across the world. During these earlier centuries, diamond engagement rings represented who the woman was committed to and it showcased the social and financial status of the man she was marrying. The ring, which is in the form of a circle, is a sacred symbol. With no beginning and end, the circular ring signifies wholeness, completeness and eternity.
How to wear your engagement and wedding rings Traditionally, you wear your engagement ring and wedding ring stacked on the fourth finger of your left hand. As far as how to stack them: tradition holds that the bride wears the wedding band inside the engagement ring so that it’s closer to her heart. Some like to wear their engagement ring on one hand and wedding band on the other, especially if they’re diversely designed rings that can’t be stacked.
When to pick out wedding bands Industry experts suggests that couples pick out wedding bands at least two months before the wedding; that way, you can account for any lastminute wedding planning details that might pop up while your rings are already in production. If you’re unsure about the kind of wedding band you want initially, wear your engagement ring for a few months before you choose the wedding ring. Your preferences might change, so take your engagement ring for a spin to get a better grasp of the wedding band you’re envisioning closer to the wedding day.
Do you need both an engagement and wedding ring? Ultimately, this really comes down to personal preference. If you like the traditional look, then yes, of course. Whether you’re adding an eternity band set with pavé diamonds or a plain metal band, a wedding ring/engagement ring stack is a timeless and beautiful look. Rings on their own, of course, are also gorgeous and instead of a separate engagement ring and wedding ring combination, some people opt for only a single ring. Why? Single rings can be more comfortable and less fussy than a stacked band and engagement ring combo and it’s one less ring to have to worry about losing, and you don’t have to worry about two rings perfectly lining up, either (it can sometimes be tricky to find a wedding band that matches and lines up perfectly with your engagement ring if they’re not purchased at the same time). You can also make a bigger investment in a single standout ring. The bottom line? There’s no right or wrong answer when it comes to choosing, designing or wearing engagement and wedding rings. You can wear none, one, two, three rings – the only rule you should follow is to make sure you choose whatever makes sense to you.

Historic. Iconic. Trailblazing.
At Christys’, craft is key. Since its founding in 1773, Miller Christy’s passion for impeccable quality and skilled craftsmanship has passed through generations of hatmakers, safeguarding Christys’ red and gold insignia as a symbol synonymous with fine traditionally crafted hats. Official helmet manufacturer of the UK Police Force for two centuries, Christys’ stands as the Godfather of British hatmaking – not least since its Homburg hat was worn by Marlon Brando’s Don Corleone. The cult of Christys’ is recognisable throughout cinema, fashion, music and politics, amassing an eclectic lineup of wearers from Winston Churchill to Kate Moss, Indiana Jones to Brad Pitt. Christys’ was and is a brand with an eye on the future and, while methods have remained largely unchanged and heritage is paramount, it is the capacity to transcend trends and social borders that makes Christys’ hats as sought after as ever.

Spring… in the new season! LET MORGAN CLARE GUIDE YOU THROUGH THE SEASONAL TRANSITION... WITH SOME GREAT OCCASIONS IN MIND. ere at Morgan Clare we love the start of spring. It’s a time to look at fresh colours, key shapes and to introduce new brands that excite us. Whilst it’s the season for event dressing such as weddings, it’s also a great time to jet away and catch some early sun. So let us guide you through some great outfit choices whatever your spring occasion…
H
*** If you want a fun dress for a garden party then Preen and Essentiel Antwerp are your go to brands. Polka dot and florals are key for print and bright colour is the best way to inject that new season feeling. If you’re more comfortable in a beautiful top and a pair of jeans then try one of Stella McCartney’s floral silk shirts or the 62 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk
Velvet polka dot blouse, which looks fab when worn back with white denim (our new favourite is the Emery straight jean from Citizens of Humanity). For a day at the races we would suggest choosing something structurally simple but bold in colour to stand out from the crowd. The new Tibi Maxi dress in striking lime green is definitely a wining choice and for an event such as a christening try something a little softer like a pastel jacket worn over a modern monochrome dress. With wedding season upon us look no further than Joseph, Velvet and Harris Wharf. Sophisticated separates such as a silk blouses, printed midi skirts and clean cropped jackets make wedding dressing effortless. The ‘dress’ however is still in demand and if you’re the mother of the bride or just want to feel fabulous then
choose a print from Peter Pilotto or a romantic shape from our new brand Jonathan Simkhai. If you’re lucky enough to be heading abroad for the Easter break then look at our top picks from Vix and Heidi Klein. Ulla Johnson also has the most gorgeous summer dresses this season ideal for going from beach to bar. Don’t forget your accessories too; the new beach hats from Melissa Odabash and holiday bags from Stella McCartney look great. Finally if you’re staying closer to home and need something a little warmer for the unpredictable weather then fear not! Pastel coloured knits from 360 and Repeat, fresh trainers from Veja and light raincoats from Herno will make sure you’re layered up come rain or shine... Happy shopping and happy spring from the MC team!

Perfect your pout Charlotte Tilbury matte revolution lipstick Pillow Talk £25 charlottetilbury.com/uk Charlotte Tilbury’s Pillow Talk is a go-to shade for brides-tobe. The dreamy nude pink is enriched with soothing orchid and lipstick tree extract, enhancing the natural hue whilst making them appear fuller and feel softer and the angled square tip makes it ideal for top ups during your big day. For that all-important kiss at the end of the ceremony, you’ll want your lips to be in the best possible shape. A vitamin E stick can combat cracks and creases that weather and nervous lip biting can cause. You should also exfoliate your lips at least once a week, to clear away dead skin. Finally, protect with sunscreen, as the sun can leave lips looking and feeling parched.

Make your makeup last Laura Mercier pressed setting powder £32 lauramercier.com Though it might feel otherwise, your wedding day is a marathon, not a sprint and you’ll want your makeup to hold up through every last photo, dance, toast and selfie. Keep shine at bay and make sure you are picture perfect all day with Laura Mercier’s pressed powder. The lightweight, velvety formula is ideal for touch-ups and keeps make up looking fresh and flawless.
Elemis pro-collagen rose facial oil 15ml £67 elemis.com When it comes to the best way to care for your face, there are many schools of thought. Elemis’ ultralightweight formula is infused with a precious trio of rose extracts and hydrating Padina Pavonica to smooth the look of fine line and wrinkles, leaving the skin with a luminous glow. Massage a few drops into the face and neck in the run up to your big day for a fresh look. But the real secret to great skin? Water. Drink tons of H2O before and on your wedding day to make your face look dewy and radiant.
OUAI anti-frizz hair sheets £20 theouai.com Great bridal locks require a little love and devotion. OUAI’s handy anti-frizz hair sheets are perfect for taming flyway’s without leaving any product build-up, ideal for if you are planning on changing hair style from day-to-night. A few swipes from root to tip leaves hair shiny, smooth and frizz free. We all know that washing, blow-drying and heat-styling on a daily basis makes for a head full of split ends, so start repairing from the inside out. Experts believe that a diet filled with Vitamin B helps bring out your hair’s natural shine (dull hair is actually a symptom of a vitamin B deficiency). Foods like fish, nuts and eggs will give you a good head start. On the outside, an invigorating scalp massage and deep conditioning treatment about four weeks prior to the big day not only feels good but stimulates the hair follicles and adds body. DR DAN BLACKMAN MBCHB MD MRCPIS A CONSULTANT CARDIOLOGIST AT LEEDS NHS TRUST AND AT SPIRE LEEDS HOSPITAL. Question: I have been experiencing dizzy spells frequently these last few months. They occur mostly when I get up from sitting and pass again within a minute. On occasion they leave me feeling disorientated for up to half an hour. I have low blood pressure, but I have never suffered with dizziness before. Could this be linked with exercise? I have been training for a marathon for the past three months and it has been suggested that I need to take iron supplements. But I have also noticed the dizziness can coincide with stiffness in my neck – I still suffer from soft tissue damage from a car accident which left me with whiplash two years ago. Amswer:
Dizziness can mean light-headedness, true vertigo (‘the room spinning’), or difficulty with balance. Dizziness on getting up from sitting is likely to be light-headedness caused by a drop in blood pressure. This is a common condition, especially in older people or in people taking medications for a heart condition or Parkinson’s disease. If your blood pressure is normally low, this may make you more prone to this problem. You should make sure you keep well hydrated, especially during and after exercise, and take a drink when the dizziness comes on. If your symptoms persist you may need to consult your doctor. Regular cardiovascular exercise, such as training for a marathon, does cause blood pressure to drop a little, but is unlikely to be a significant factor. Intense endurance exercise can also lead to a drop in iron levels, but this would not cause dizziness unless you actually became anaemic, which is very rare. Iron supplements are not recommended unless anaemia is present – a simple blood test from your doctor could exclude this. Whiplash injuries can lead to later symptoms of dizziness, probably caused by compression of nerves in the neck which control blood pressure. This is a separate problem from your dizziness on standing up. It can be helped with assessment and treatment by an experienced physiotherapist.

Feng shui your home APPLY THE PRINCIPLES OF HAPPINESS AND HARMONY INTO YOUR DÉCOR. omes should be places we love, where we enjoy waking up and coming back home to and if you want to breathe more life into your living space by creating a happy, healthy and welcoming environment, then there’s no better place to start than with the theory of feng shui. Its principles maintain that we live in harmony with our environment and its main aim is to achieve balance in your living and working space and maximise your potential for success in all areas of your life. So, how can we apply this philosophy to our home for 2020 and beyond? We’ve compiled a few ideas that will kickstart your journey to a happier and healthier home.
H
Invite wealth into your home In feng shui, your front door represents how energy enters your home and your life. So, naturally it is first place to start when you want to create good feng shui. To draw chi energy to your front door place plants and lights either side and use a mirror to visually enlarge the foyer space but position it so that it doesn’t directly face the door. Evergreens are ideal foliage and shrubs which stay green and have a good bulk all year round are key, so try box or yew, hebes or sarcococcas. Pictured: Garden Trading 40cm planter gardentrading.co.uk
Bring harmony to your kitchen The hall represents opportunities, therefore ensure it is kept clutter-free so that the ‘energy’ can circulate. Place coats and shoes inside a closed cupboard so they don’t stagnate and to activate that all important chi energy, position a mirror and fresh flowers to instantly uplift the vitality of the space.
The kitchen is a vital space as its energy represents nourishment and relationship harmony. Ensure that you don’t place the sink and cooker opposite each other, as that can lead to arguments between couples by creating a ‘water and fire crash’. Avoid too much black and red, as that too causes water and fire to collide. Focus on strong Earth element décor such as fresh whites, clean greys and warm nude tones.

HOME & GARDEN
Spruce up your interior decor
Nourish your dining space
In feng shui, plants embody life energy. What does that mean? Well, living green house plants connect us to nature and bring vibrancy into our homes. They’re like fresh pressed organic green juice for our homes. Think freshness, health and vitality. The most important thing to remember is to find plants that you can care for and are appropriate for the space. For example, take your lighting conditions into consideration. If you’re new to plants, try some easy ones like aloe and succulents.
The dining room and table are an important consideration in feng shui as they provide a space where you can concentrate mindfully on what you are eating. In feng shui the dining space is considered to relate with the spleen, that in turn relates to the element Earth, which in traditional Chinese medicine is concerned with digestion. To optimise the energy in this space, place a mirror on the wall to reflect the dining area and fresh flowers on the table.

Encourage a restful sleep
Let chi flow freely
To ensure your bedroom is as balanced as possible, choose a light neutral colour and invest in a king or super-king size bed and mattress. The bed must have a headboard and be positioned centrally against a solid wall and ideally must not be in line with the bedroom door. Place bedside tables either side of the bed to provide support and top with curvy lamps and lightly fragranced candles to introduce some romantic energy.
The front garden represents your future, so ensure it is always kept beautiful with an array of flowers and plants and always keep it tidy so that the chi-energy is able to flow freely. The back garden represents both health and wealth for the occupants, so ensure it is always kept in good condition. The boundaries, fences and walls must always be well maintained to provide support to the occupants and a bird bath or water feature can add both sound and wildlife to your outdoor space.

The ‘Forty-Nine-A’ development, at a value of £380 per square foot, comprises of three one-bedroom apartments, six two-bedroom apartments and the unique ‘Trilogy’ four-bedroom penthouse; Leeds largest city centre apartment spread across three floors and taking up 4,900 sq. feet.

Rohin Dhand, founder and CEO of Mayfair Group Investment (MGI) said: ‘’Leeds is an incredible place to live and work right now, but most of the city centre apartment developments are often too generic, lacking in depth and character. We pride ourselves on taking a more bespoke, inventive approach and FortyNine-A is no exception; we’ve worked closely with all our buyers to ensure their apartment specification is to their exact taste, alongside integrated smart systems and premium fixtures and fittings. “We’re proud of what the team have achieved and specifically with the Trilogy penthouse; it has created an ambitious living space spread across three floors and epitomises everything MGI stand for; unique, innovative and forward-thinking. There’s nowhere quite like it in Leeds.” Dhand set up Mayfair Group Investment seven years ago and has since been responsible for a series of highprofile projects throughout Yorkshire
enjoying huge success in the healthcare sector, including St Martins House medical centre and a number of highprofile residential projects. Another MGI luxury apartment project at 15 Park Place is currently in the planning stage and schedule to be available to rent from August 2020. Tobias, of Zenko properties, the estate agent for the Forty- Nine A, added: “MGI are the ones to watch in Leeds. Their latest development broke new records in Leeds city centre, with apartments valued close to £400 per sq ft and being fully sold 1.5 weeks post completion. “I can’t think of another developer building that has been achieved to this high quality and selling in such record time. Credit to the fresh expertise of Rohin and his team for a brilliant achievement – we can’t wait to see what 2020 has in store and MGI’s next development to come to fruition.”

Family legacy
Nigel Leeks in the 1960s
WHEN OPPORTUNITY KNOCKED FOR BROTHERS PHIL AND TONY LEEKS, THEY COULDN’T SAY NO. hen brothers Phil and Tony Leeks took over Town Garage in Horsforth it felt like coming home. Their father Nigel had bought it in the 1960s, establishing a much loved and highly respected family business which grew over the years, attracting a loyal core of regular customers. The garage provided vehicle maintenance, servicing, and petrol. Moving to a new site on Featherbank Lane in the 1980s opened the next chapter with MOT testing and a bigger and better equipped workshop. This allowed them to offer the local community a much needed and more cost friendly alternative to the highly priced main dealers. “Town Garage had always prided itself on good honest service and friendly advice and that is still the same today,” says youngest son and financial director Phil. “My brother and I both worked for my father when he sadly died unexpectedly of a massive heart attack in 1987, and with me only 16 at the time and my brother 20, we were way too young and inexperienced to take over. “My mother, who had been the administrative and financial side of the business, was devastated by the sudden loss and didn’t want to carry on so it seemed the best idea was to sell the business and rent the property out.” The brothers set out on their own career paths. Tony, a qualified technician, remained in the trade while Phil entered
W
the world of IT... but both knew where their destiny lay. “There was always unfinished business,” Phil admits. “Town Garage was a family concern and the sons were supposed to take over... it niggled me that we hadn’t fulfilled mum and dad’s masterplan.” So when the family friend who had rented the business decided to retire the brothers did not hesitate. “Mum said: OK now’s your chance,” says Phil. “I sold my stake in my IT business, my brother had had enough of main dealer land, and was also keen to take back what we viewed to be rightfully ours. “So with me having 20 years’ experience of running my own business as a finance and sales director and my brother running three main dealer workshops, we together had the right skills to give this a damn good go.” And that is where we find the brothers today. They took over a workshop that was turning over £160,000 per annum ten years ago, and now that figure is £800,000.
There are nine staff, using state of the art computer diagnostic equipment and tooling, and they employ top quality fully trained technicians with over 100 years’ collective main dealer experience between them. “And we are still operating with the same ethics that made my father so popular 50 years ago... good honest service at a fair price,” says Phil. Customer satisfaction is the main goal and if your car is covered by a manufacturer’s warranty, rest assured Town Garage will service it to the right specification using genuine approved parts, fluids and lubricants and you can expect a saving of up to 50 per cent on main agent prices. It’s a personal service including pickup and drop-off, no work will be done without the owner’s authority and they’ll never suggest work that doesn’t need doing. Phil says: “We have many customers and a great reputation that has taken years to build up, so there is no need to look for things that aren’t there; we just want a happy customer in a safe and reliable car.” Town Garage Featherbank Lane, Horsforth Leeds, LS18 4NW Tel: 0113 258 2756 Email: service@town-garage.com www.town-garage.com Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk 91

FOOD & WINE
What would you choose? RENOWNED FOOD CRITIC JAY RAYNER HEADS TO YORKSHIRE NEXT MONTH TO TALK LAST SUPPERS AND MORE. magine you are about to die. You have one meal left. What are you going to have? It’s the question award-winning restaurant critic, MasterChef judge and writer Jay Rayner has been asked most often by audiences across the UK. It happened so often that he decided the time had come to investigate the concept of the last supper and why it intrigues us so. Is it because of the opportunity it presents us with to let your appetites run riot? Or is it because it’s a greedy way in which to tell the story of your own life? And if so, what would a man like Jay Rayner, who for two decades has made a living eating out in restaurants, choose to put on the menu? In this barnstorming new show, Rayner investigates our fascination with last suppers and tells the stories of the killer dishes that would end up on his table: how he was introduced to oysters by his late mother, how he almost burnt down a hotel because of his love for snails in bubbling garlic butter and of the many ways by which the mighty pig has fed him over the years. Plus, he’ll get the audience to design their own last meal. My Last Supper: One Meal, A Lifetime in the Making follows the success of his sell-out shows, My Dining Hell and The Ten Food Commandments, which have taken audiences by storm across the UK, Australia, New Zealand and the US. Jay Rayner honed his healthy appetite as a student at Leeds University and he’ll be back in the region for two dates on his My Last Supper tour at The Carriageworks, Leeds on 16 April and Harrogate Theatre on 23 April. He’s an award-winning writer, journalist and broadcaster with a fine collection of shirts. He has written on

everything from crime and politics, through cinema and theatre to the visual arts, but is best known as the restaurant critic for the Observer. For a while he was a sex columnist for Cosmopolitan; he also once got himself completely waxed in the name of journalism. He only mentions this because it hurt. Jay is a former Young Journalist of the Year, Critic of the Year and Restaurant Critic of the Year, though not all in the same year. In 2018 he was named Restaurant Writer of The Year in the
Fortnum and Mason Food and Drink Awards. He performs live all over the country, both with his one man shows and as a pianist with his jazz ensemble, The Jay Rayner Quartet. He is a regular on British television, where he is familiar as a judge on MasterChef and, since 2012 has been the chair of BBC Radio 4’s food panel show The Kitchen Cabinet. He likes pig. Simply delicious IAN APPLEYARD IS TICKLED – AND SUITABLY IMPRESSED – AT THIS RECENTLY REFURBISHED COUNTRY INN. he residents of Bilton-in-Ainsty are justifiably proud of their village’s heritage. The arrival of the Tickled Trout – a superb country inn with boutique accommodation – is now another cause for celebration. Originally built in the 1600s, the venue – formerly the Chequers Inn – reopened at the end of 2019 after being acquired by husband-and-wife restaurateurs Karl and Amanda Mainey. Following an extensive make-over, it is already forging a reputation for fine cuisine and excellent standards of service. Situated just off the York-Wetherby Road, the village of Bilton-in-Ainsty was listed in the Domesday Book (1086) and its local church, St Helens, played host to Royalist prisoners during the Battle of Marston Moor (1644).

Diners in the Trout are reminded of those facts courtesy of a potted local history on the place-mats – just one of many nice touches we enjoyed during our recent visit to the restaurant. Fishy photographs and paintings adorn the walls, there are images of fish on the curtains and wallpaper, and fishing accessories hang from the ceiling. It works a treat and the friendliness of the staff also helps to create a wonderfully relaxed ambience. Head chef Terry Davies, in conjunction with his bosses and a hard-working kitchen team, have devised a menu which offers many pleasant surprises. Terry, previously sous chef at the Lodore Falls Hotel in the Lake District, has worked under Gordon Ramsay and James Martin in the past and learned well from his mentors.
The Maineys, meanwhile, have owned a number of Yorkshire restaurants down the years including the Spice Box in Boston Spa, the Bay Horse at Kirk Deighton, the Fox and Hounds at Walton and the Crown Inn at Roecliffe. Karl still retains an involvement in the kitchen so I opened with his ‘Almost Famous’ Crab Soup (£6.70) which, according to the menu, takes ‘three hours to make and ten years to perfect!’ It was simply delicious and was poured into the bowl at the table from a glass tube. My partner Amanda (not to be confused with Mrs Mainey) had nothing but good words to say about her ‘Golden Tartlet’ (£6.99) – a delightful combination of cheddar cheese and wild mushrooms served with spinach, rocket, and parmesan. Emphasis is undoubtedly on the fish

but meat-eaters may also choose from a wide selection of homemade dishes which include game from local shoots. For the main course, I opted for the fresh fish pie (£14.50), one of the many eye-catching dishes on the specials board. Under a lid of cheese and mash, it was packed with smoked haddock, prawns, and trout (presumably tickled) and cooked to perfection. Across the table, our other main course was a tender and tasty herb fed chicken breast, confit leg with stock pot vegetables (£16.22). The beautifully hand-written menus kept on coming and the dessert menu was too good to ignore. All the dishes sounded tempting and, thankfully, there was no need to worry about making the wrong decision! The Assiette of Desserts (£14.95) was priced for two to share and allowed us
to indulge in the full selection of treats – caramelised tarte tatin, Belgian chocolate delice, Vanilla panna cotta, cheesecake, and the truly heavenly sticky toffee pudding – which is so popular with locals it is also sold in jars at the bar. The menu even encourages customers to ‘take one home for a naughty night on the sofa’ but with five boutique rooms due to open at the Trout in March, guests might also take one upstairs for supper! Rooms at the Trout comes with freestanding baths and countryside views. There is an extensive wine list and we sampled two glasses of excellent Chardonnay (£4.95 each). It is worth noting that anyone unfamiliar with this neck of the woods on the West/North Yorkshire border could easily miss the Bilton turn-off,
especially on a dark and rainy night. However, be completely assured – any patience that may be needed to find this great restaurant is duly rewarded. Reservations are recommended, especially on weekends. Traditional roast dinners are available all day Sundays. Got lunch plans? You do now THERE’S MORE THAN ‘MEATS’ THE EYE AT CHOPHAUS, OAKWOOD, WRITES LUCINDA HURST. ore and more restaurants seem to be passing on city centre locations in exchange for the leafy suburbs of North Leeds, much like independent restaurant Chophaus. Taking over the unique Oakwood building by Roundhay Park, you get a feeling the space was made for this restaurant, rather than the other way around. After much speculation and anticipation of what would replace the building’s previous tenants, Chophaus opened its doors last December after interior designers Nanu Soda gave the venue a fresh new look that’s oh-so on trend. When we arrive, the dark colour scheme and gold accents are awash with natural light from the distinctive arched window. We catch a glimpse of the well-stocked back bar before we are led upstairs to the main restaurant area where we settle into the trendy yet incredibly comfortable seating, with a selection of menus in front of us. The steak board adorning the walls comes in miniature version, along with a main menu and a lunch menu – the latter being the offering that we’re looking to sample. A quick check of the wine list highlights a fair few favourites. We plump for an Argentinian Malbec (£25) and don’t wait for anyone’s recommendations to order it. The waiter who brings it to our table is full of compliments for its juicy body and charcoal finish. It certainly makes an excellent companion for perusing the menu. The lunch menu isn’t just your standard fair but classic dishes that have

been elevated. The salt-baked beef pie (£12.95) grabbed my attention immediately, and my dining partner was keen to try the steak sandwich (£11.50). The plates arrived and taking one look at the crisp, dark golden pastry, I was eager to get stuck in. The main event was cut from a larger pie dish, and served with buttery mash topped with crispy onions, and a side of green beans. For anyone who has seen Ratatouille and the scene where the dish takes Gustav back to his childhood, you, like me, have probably dreamt of that moment. Well spoiler alert; this was it for me. From the first bite, it was like being back in my Nanna’s kitchen, to the humble but perfectly formed beef pies she would serve up and we would enjoy together as a family. Not a chef herself but with plenty more pastry making experience than most, I’ve never enjoyed anyone else’s shortcrust in quite the same way. The beef pie in front of me was something special. Every inch of pastry was beyond buttery, the rich filling glazing the plate as I worked my fork through the layers. One look at my expression and you could colour me impressed. The steak

sandwich was not forgotten though, served with crisp fries and a sharp mustard mayo. The generous layers of beef running through had a quality to it that you miss in many sandwiches. Hang up on new phone scam Grandparents in Yorkshire are being warned of a new telephone scam which is currently sweeping the United States and is set to hit the UK. CPR Call Blocker, makers of the best-selling call blocking device in the UK and the US, is urging the public, in particular grandparents, in Yorkshire to beware if they receive a call from an apparent relative (normally a grandchild) in distress or someone claiming to represent the relative (such as a lawyer or police officer). The scam, sees the ‘relative’ of the grandparent explain they’re in trouble and that they need their grandparent to send them funds that will be used for a fictitious expense that they need to pay urgently. The grandparent never hears from their fake relative again and is tricked out of hundreds or even thousands. 104 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

Making Design a Delight Family run Furnish & Fettle opens two new showrooms full of design inspiration and a friendly helping hand These days we are bombarded with images of beautiful homes. There are TV shows about the subject, Instagram feeds full of perfect pictures and the internet is bursting with a choice of suppliers for every imaginable piece of furniture or accessory. There is no wonder then, that it can feel somewhat overwhelming and that many people end up with a random assortment of lovely things that just don’t work well together. “We see it all the time,” says Eleanor, “People have bought a new home and bring the furniture from
their last home with them and then buy a few lovely pieces but are then disappointed that, somehow, the finished result is lack lustre”. There is a lot to think about when designing the interiors for a home. As well as creating the desired look and feel, the practicalities must be considered and, of course, there is that all important issue of budget. “Like most things in life, it all comes down to planning,” explains Eleanor. “If you have an idea of what you are wanting to achieve and then take the necessary steps towards that you will get the
results you are after”. Some people enjoy this process and are happy to commit the hours to researching each different aspect, but for many it is simply a chore and a drain on their precious free time. That is where calling in the experts can quite literally be a life changing experience. “A lot of people, however, feel intimidated by the idea of working with an interior designer so a visit to one of our showrooms is a great way for potential customers to come and see what we can do and to meet our friendly team,” says Eleanor. “There’s always lots to browse and a

warm welcome”. The first “new” showroom which has just opened on Crescent Road, Harrogate is an upgrade from the former showroom just around the corner on Royal Parade. It is a lighter, brighter and bigger space that is much welcomed by the team of 3 designers based there. “It’s a great space, so much better for our clients to get a feel for what we can do,” says designer Janet Sandles The second new showroom, due to open in the next few weeks, is in the bustling market town of Pocklington, East Yorkshire. “Opening in Pocklington just felt like the right thing for us to do” says Glyn. “It’s a thriving town full of independent shops and eateries and we hope to
be able to add to the positive vibe by making it destination for shoppers from all around the area”. Both new showrooms feature beautiful room sets which showcase bespoke upholstery as well as smaller pieces of furniture and accessories that can be picked up there and then. There is also a huge pattern library of wallpaper and
fabric samples from all the leading designer brands. The most important thing though is that there is always a warm welcome from our team of experienced professional interior designers who are here to help whether you are looking for help with paint colours or a full house redesign.
