Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate Independent Education Girls & Boys 3 to 19 years Day & Boarding Thorpe Underwood, Yorkshire. Phone: 01423 333 330 Email: info@QE.org Web: www.QE.org
Are we all about academics? No, but were you aware the Daily Telegraph and The Times both rank QE College as the top most academically successful day and boarding school in the North for A*/ A grades at A Level and equivalent results and our Faculty of Queen Ethelburga’s, the second most academically successful co-educational day and boarding school in the North for A*/ A grades at A Level and equivalent results?
Are we all about Sport? No independent school in the North has the equivalent of our £20m Sports Village. A parent said we are now in a league above the rest. See: www.sportsvillageqe.org
Are we all about superb facilities? No, but we have invested over £80m in superb new teaching facilities and resources in the last 8 years - way more than any other independent school in the North.
Are we all about boarding? No, but no one comes close to the quality of our boarding accommodation. The best in the UK. All bedrooms have private bathroom, air-con, TV, phone & mini-kitchen.
Are we all about day pupils? A LEVEL RESULTS 2015 QE COLLEGE Overall pass rate 100% A*/A - A level results - 81% A*/B - A level results - 98% QE FACULTY Overall pass rate 100% A*/A - A level results - 81% A*/B - A level results - 97% “We were looking for our children to change schools. However in the independent sector this has financial implications. Our problems in this regard were solved by the offer of Day or Boarding Awards (our choice) for both children. They moved, are now happy, and doing very well. QE is growing in size because it is run in a refreshing, modern and much better way. There are plenty of day children.”
No, but it is interesting to note our day fees are, on average, over 14% less cost than other local independent schools and our bus service covers a very big local area.
Is it all about Scholarships and Awards? No, but then again who else offers over £3m in Scholarships and Awards every year? Even without any form of Scholarship or Award, sending your child to QE could save you between £3,000 and £7,000 in day fees a year, compared to elsewhere.
All of the above are perhaps the reasons why appreciably more parents have chosen QE this year than last year. SPECIAL BOARDING AWARDS Worth up to £75,500 Awarded to outstanding, high achieveing students in categories Academic and/or Sport. Awards based on experience and ability, subject to interview and assessment. (Note a 30% award may be given under this scholarship type for our Elite Sport programmes). FAMILY SIBLING AWARDS Day & Boarding Our discounts are bigger than others, if indeed they even offer them. Brothers & sisters - boarders from 12% - 20%, day pupils 10%.
Enjoy a 6th Form education at QE and pay no fees!.... Day Award up to £25,000, Boarding Award up to £65,000 If your child’s GCSE grades are predicted 10 Grade A star GCSE’s worth up to 100% of the fees 9 A star and 1 A Grade GCSE’s worth up to 90% of the fees 8 A star and 2 A Grade GCSE’s worth up to 75% of the fees 7 A star and 3 A Grade GCSE’s worth up to 60% of the fees

NS Kitchens
Shared values Wren Kitchens has joined forces with interior designer Linda Barker to launch an exclusive collection.
W
ren Kitchens is exceptionally proud to present an exclusive range of Linda Barker kitchens, which incorporates the thoughtful finishing touches you’d expect from the experienced interior design specialist. The collaboration began back in 2012 when Wren Kitchens donated a kitchen to a family of flood victims, which was shown on a programme that Linda was presenting. Wren started talking to Linda and it soon became clear that they shared the same values; Wren are proud to be a family-owned business, with roots in Yorkshire where Linda herself is also from. Linda admired Wren’s ambition to completely transform the UK kitchen market, and the collaboration blossomed from there, with Linda becoming Wren’s creative director. They soon began working on an exclusive kitchen collection which would provide consumers with the biggest choice of kitchen door styles and colours in the UK. And all manufactured here in the UK at Wren’s own factories in Yorkshire and Lincolnshire. This collection was a year in the making, and was launched to the UK-wide market at the end of 2013. There are eight door styles to explore and 40 sumptuous shades chosen exclusively by Linda herself for her collection – each available in a gloss, eggshell or matt finish. Traditional dovetail jointing on solid oak drawer boxes reflects the level of quality: another opulent feature unique to the Linda Barker collection, which comes with a lifetime guarantee. Last year Linda had her own Wren kitchen installed in her beautiful Yorkshire home. Linda wanted to make the most of her space, while creating a social environment where she could entertain her family and friends, incorporating the panoramic views through her floor-to-ceiling windows of the Yorkshire countryside. She chose the sculptured door style with complementary colour palette, combining Gullwing, Royal Purple and Damson to great effect. “All the internal fittings are beautifully lined

in oak, which means I never worry about my cupboard doors being left open. The design maximises the space available and although no structural changes were made, I feel as if I have a much bigger, more efficient kitchen with infinitely more storage space.” Linda is now heavily involved with Wren’s kitchen designer training at their head office, The Nest in North Lincolnshire. At the end of the designers’ two-week induction, Linda provides a specialist interior design session, encouraging them to experiment with colour and offering advice on everything from kitchen layouts to the latest appliances and trends. Linda has become a part of the Wren family, and she is more than just the face of Wren, it’s a synergy that is cemented in her passion for interiors and love of the brand. Lamborghini’s Huracan blows its top From supercars to family saloons… the latest motoring news with Jordan Cutforth.
Good news for all Premiership footballers, Lamborghini has finally released a convertible version of the Huracan – itself replacing the Gallardo, the most popular model in the car maker’s history. With its first public outing at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, the Huracan Spyder will be powered by the same 602hp 5.2-litre V10 engine as found in the coupe. This means a 201mph top speed and a 0-62mph sprint time of 3.4 seconds. The soft-top roof can be lowered in 17 seconds at speeds of up to 31mph. As with the coupe, it’ll come with four-wheel drive and a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Expect a starting price of around £190,000 when the car arrives in showrooms next year.

Porsche goes strictly turbo
To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Golf GTI,Volkswagen has produced a stand-alone special edition. Dubbed the GTI Clubsport, it comes with a different exterior design and some improved power statistics. With a more prominent front bumper design, new side sills, a redesigned rear diffuser and a multi-part roof spoiler, the Clubsport certainly stands out from the rest of the VW group’s range with its very aggressive appearance. These alterations also provide meaningful downforce so it should handle crisper too. Power from the 2.0-litre turbo unit has been increased to 261hp or to 286hp on full throttle acceleration. 60mph comes in 6.0 seconds for the manual car or 5.9 seconds with the DSG auto ‘box. Consumption stats are 40.9mpg (160g/km) and 42.2 mpg (155g/km) respectively
The big news is that the Porsche 911 will no longer have naturallyaspirated engines. Instead, they’ll all be turbocharged. This is for efficiency reasons and one which was ultimately going to happen at some point. Fear not though; power has increased by around 20hp and the straight-six scream synonymous of the high-revving naturallyaspirated engines hasn’t been affected. All 911 Carrera models now come with 3.0-litre units. The Carrera produces figures of 370hp and 332 lb ft of torque. The Carrera S produces 420hp and 369lb ft. The quickest 0-62mph times are 4.2 seconds and 3.9 seconds respectively. The 911 can now achieve up to 38.2mpg on the combined cycle and emits just 169g/km of CO2. Prices start from £76,412. Launches in December.
Setting the pace Revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the Jaguar F-Pace looks to take the crown from the Porsche Macan for top honours in the medium-sized luxury SUV marketplace. Not only does it take heavy inspiration from the F-Type sports car in terms of its pleasingly eye-catching appearance, but its interior rivals that found in the most luxurious of SUVs, including Volvo’s XC90 and BMW’s X5. It will be powered by a 178hp 2.0-litre diesel, a 296hp 3.0-litre diesel or a 375hp 3.0-litre supercharged V6 petrol unit. Models with the 2.0-litre diesel can be rear or four-wheel drive and come with six-speed manual transmissions. The rest come with Jaguar’s excellent and well-proven XF automatic transmission and all-wheel drive platforms. Prices start from £34,170. Available to order now.
Better all-round
The Megane is one of Renault’s most popular models, so it’s big news to announce that Renault has created an all-new model. The new Megane is 64mm longer and 25mm lower than the previous model with a 28mm longer wheelbase. This all aids with interior space and the boot can now hold up to 434litres of luggage – second largest in this sector.
NS • page 16
With a more distinctive appearance and more luxurious interior ,including the likes of a 8.7inch touchscreen, a seven-inch TFT instrument display and a full-colour head-up display, the Megane is more appealing than ever. It’s more economical too, with figures that can top 85.6mpg and 86g/km of CO2. A diesel hybrid will also be introduced after the car goes on sale next summer.

orkshire’s rich history attracts millions of visitors from all over the world each year. It’s also hardly surprising that those who live and work in the region take full advantage of this history when planning important events. There’s nothing quite like a sense of heritage to add an extra special touch to an occasion, after all. But for those who would rather not settle for a dusty old castle, why not bring your event to life surrounded by history, all in

What’s more, the Royal Armouries International team employs an innovative marketing approach to ensure your corporate clients are as excited about the venue as you are well before the day arrives. Tools such as a drone not only show off the beautiful setting but enable you to offer your customers – some of whom may never have ventured ‘up north’ before – a bird’s eye view of where the event will be held in relation to Leeds City Centre. To see the drone in action, check out the blog on www.rai-events.co.uk. So whether you are planning a corporate or a personal event – be it big or small – why not consider Royal Armouries Museum or NEW DOCK Hall? The dedicated events team is ready and waiting to turn your ideas into a truly show-stopping occasion. Contact them on 0113 220 1990 or info@raievents.co.uk to see what they can do for you. Cuban cool arrives in Leeds Have you been caught on camera?
Revolución de Cuba has burst onto the Leeds social scene with its unique brand of Cuban cool. The huge £1.5million Latin American rum bar and club, at the end of the ever-popular Call Lane, mixes the old-school glamour of the Buena Vista Social Club days of the 1930s with a contemporary twist, making it the perfect place for the hedonistic people of Leeds and beyond to unwind. The relaxed daytime food and drink venue will turn into a Caribbean fiesta as the sun goes down to unleash live music, dancing and celebration.
Meat and greet Herds flocked to celebrate the opening night of stunning new restaurant Stockdales of Yorkshire, where they sampled fine beef cuts and fancy cocktails. South Parade, Leeds, LS1 5QX Tel: 0113 204 2460

Ahead of the curves The expert help at Silk Sisters ensures that your lingerie makes the most of your figure.
S
ilk Sisters in Otley has been a part of the scenery in the old market town since 2004. The boutique has long been known the go-to place for quirky gifts and gorgeous accessories, but in more recent times it has established itself as a stockist of quality lingerie offering expert bra fittings. “So many people wear the wrong size bra and it can really affect their health,” says the boutique’s owner Jan Trutch, who has more than 30 years’ retail experience in the UK and abroad. To make sure you are wearing the correct size, expert fitter Julie Joyce is on hand to measure, fit and offer advice on what styles might suit you best. She has worked in lingerie for many years and has been specially trained in the brands stocked at Silk Sisters. Beautiful items by Fantasie and Freya ensure cups up to size K are well catered for and there are styles and shapes to suit every figure. Both ranges have proved exceptionally popular and Silk Sisters are the only stockist in the area. Fantasie is designed to give effortless support and bring out the best in every figure. Their styles are sophisticated and feature only the highest-quality fabrics, and they even feature a nursing-bra range

too. Freya has a more youthful, colourful feel but nevertheless, both brands give amazing comfort and fit. Their fantastic swimwear is also cup-sized and Julie is also available to make sure you achieve the perfect fit. Curvy ladies will know how important a supportive swimsuit can be and with cup-sized bikinis, tankinis and costumes all available, you’re spoilt for choice. “All of our swimwear is top quality and is well worth the investment,” Jan says. The boutique sells swimwear and beachwear 12 months of the year, so no matter when you’re looking to get away, you can rely on Silk Sisters to cater for your holiday needs. As well as swimwear and lingerie, Silk Sisters stock Freya sports bras. This popular range has received a lot of publicity for the research that has been put into their styles and support. Over four months the University of Portsmouth's breast health specialist team examined how Freya crop-top sports bras reduce strain, pain and movement. The team’s findings confirmed that they offer outstanding levels of support. When analysing the movement of cup sizes 32FF-36E, the results found the new Freya active sports bra reduces
breast pain by up to 97 per cent, which is great news for active, curvy women. In preparation for the party season Silk Sisters are already stocking shapewear – perfect for those looking for an hourglass figure with smooth lines. And as always, Silk Sisters continues to stock gifts, Italian leather handbags, leather gloves, silver and fashion jewellery, hair accessories scarves and much more. New for this season they have also added boots and shoes to their offering. As new stock is delivered weekly, the latest trends will always be available. When shopping for gifts, Silk Sisters will make an extra effort with presentation by offering a free gift wrapping service. Mr Balachandran Venkateswaran is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Spire Leeds Hospital, Mid Yorkshire NHS Trust and Honorary Senior Lecturer at University of Leeds. Question: I’m a keen tennis player and normally play twice a week, but I’ve started having problems with recurring pain in my right elbow, which worsens when I lift or bend my arm. I’ve tried resting for a week or two, but every time I play the pain and swelling come back. Do you think this might be tennis elbow? Is there something more effective I can do? I’d hate to have to give up my game. Mr Venkateswaran replies: Firstly, you should seek help from your GP to establish the diagnosis, as there are other problems around the elbow that can mimic “tennis elbow”.
Assuming your diagnosis is correct, let me assure you that most people are able to get back to playing sport after appropriate treatment. Tennis elbow afflicts the common extensor muscle origin from the bony prominence on the outside of the elbow. It is a lack of healing response of the tendons attached to bone, rather than the inflammation itself, that brings on the pain. Pain is typically activity related, such as a sharp stabbing sensation to a dull ache felt in the outer elbow when lifting a weight, but can also affect rest periods and night-time sleep. Painkillers can help but should be combined with an initial period of rest for four to 12 weeks and stretching of the muscles in the forearm. Hot or cold compresses can help. All of these can be better delivered under the watchful eye of a physiotherapist or your doctor. It is imperative to warm up and stretch before any activity. With such an approach most cases of tennis elbow settle in time. If the condition does not settle down over three to six months, an early injection of a long acting steroid and local anaesthetic can be given around the tendon to relieve the pain. Injections are repeated typically every three to six months if required. In severe or persistent cases, a surgical referral may be necessary, where other treatment options can be discussed including shock wave therapy in selected cases or very rarely surgery itself.

Dementia can put families at war Paula Myers of Irwin Mitchell looks at the growing problem of disputes over the financial affairs of those suffering from mental incapacity.
A
s we live longer, we unfortunately become susceptible to illness in later life. One illness which is increasing is dementia. Currently dementia affects 830,000 people in the UK, including one in six people over the age of 80. The statistics predict that by 2020 more than a million of us will be suffering from the condition. One of the reasons the illness is on the increase is because people are living longer. The growing number of people living with dementia needs to be considered when dealing with mental capacity issues, which are becoming more common where wills and Lasting Powers of Attorney are concerned. There has been a 700 per cent increase in will disputes in the last five years and it is estimated that one in four people in the UK have been involved in a will dispute. The increase in claims regarding wills has been dramatic as relatives seek to argue that their parent or other relatives do not have capacity to make decisions regarding the will and their estate. At Irwin Mitchell, we have also seen an increase in financial abuse claims where trusted family members are left in control of the purse strings but then start to abuse their position and use the funds for personal
NS • page 40
use. This can sometimes be caused by a lack of understanding as to what the person can do with the funds and how it can be spent. On other occasions it is simply described as nothing less than abuse. Before long a few pounds or additional shopping costs can become thousands of pounds and often lead to other members of the family becoming suspicious about the lack of funds left on death or the sudden improved lifestyle of the Attorney who is meant to be protecting the relative and acting in their best interests. Some of these cases result in a police investigation and can lead to prosecution. In addition there is often a legal dispute with family members who want to be repaid the money and normality restored. If you have concerns about a loved one or suspect abuse, Irwin Mitchell’s Will, Trust and Estate Disputes team has extensive experience in this area. If you would like to discuss any of the issues raised, please contact Paula Myers on 0113 394 6832 or Paula.Myers@IrwinMitchell.com

NS Food & Drink
Having a ball
From riotous Romans to My Sweet 16, we look at how the nature of throwing a party has evolved through the ages, writes Fiona Barber.
F
rom eating and entertaining to drinking and dancing, no matter what the occasion, any excuse to gather friends and family for a celebration is a good one. But throwing a party certainly isn’t a new idea; we’ve delved right back to Roman times and dipped into various points in history to find out how our ancestors celebrated.
The Romans in Britain Let’s start with the Romans, since they are credited with bringing civilisation to Britain. Their dinner parties were elaborate, often lasted up to eight hours and could be dignified or disgusting affairs, depending on the host and his choice of guests. Overindulgence was the rule rather than the exception and adults did not sit on chairs around the table like we do today; instead they laid on sloping couches around a square table – only small children or slaves were permitted to eat sitting. Of course, no dinner party would be complete without entertainment and, for the Romans, this included actors performing scenes from a popular play or a dancing display. Anyone with status in the community would hold regular dinner parties, which were not just a gathering of friends, but – just like a visit to the Roman baths – also an occasion for the host to mingle with local and regional dignitaries, to gain their friendship and support.
Tudor times Several centuries down the line the Tudors knew how to entertain. The mere mention of a Tudor banquet conjures up images of a riotous feast, with Henry VIII at the top of the table gnawing on a giant-sized chicken leg. But as with many historical stereotypes the reality was somewhat different. Banquets were formal occasions, with rules that mirrored the class system and social etiquette of the day. They also provided the host with the perfect opportunity to show off their wealth and importance by serving guests the most magnificent food, which could include venison, swan, peacock, heron, porpoise and seagull. Sometimes the skin and feathers of a peacock would be carefully removed, then once it was cooked they were replaced, as if it were still alive. This was considered a sign of wealth. These glamorous occasions could include up to six courses, as well as extensive entertainment with mummers, jugglers, jesters, acrobats or even fire-eaters.

Regency London Fast forward 200 years or so and things had become rather more refined. During the Regency, and into the Victorian era, the real highlight of the London social season were the debutante balls, which were hosted at the grand houses of the aristocracy. Débutantes that went through the ‘coming out’ process, including a presentation to the Queen in court, were expected to be married within two or three years or considered a failure. A single woman at 30 was a hopeless spinster. Imagine that. The Queen brought the curtain down on the royal curtsey in 1958 because of fears that ‘fixers’ could accept payment for introducing outsider debs into British high society. Throughout the sixties and seventies, the whirl of debutante parties and social events became more of an anachronism and in 1976 the renowned Queen Charlotte’s Ball in London folded amid rumours of drugtaking and general debauchery. So much for high society! Not all debutantes married off and went to live a genteel existence though. One of the last debs presented to the Queen, Fiona MacCarthy, rebelled against court traditions by carving out a successful career as a journalist and biographer and another deb of 1958, Teresa Hayter, later came out as an international Marxist.

Roaring Twenties On to the Roaring Twenties, the Great War was over and people were yearning for a bit of fun. For youngsters from the aristocracy and wealthier classes, life had never been better. Nightclubs, jazz clubs and cocktail bars flourished in the cities and there was an emphasis on having fun and spending money. For the first time, more Americans lived in cities than on farms. The nation’s total wealth more than doubled between 1920 and 1929, and this economic growth swept many Americans into an affluent but unfamiliar consumer society. People wanted to enjoy themselves as much as they could, by listening to the new jazz music, or learning new dances such as the Charleston and the black bottom. Young women with bobbed hair and short skirts, known as ‘flappers’ – drank, smoked, were sexually liberated and danced the new dances in the city speakeasies – and became an iconic symbol of the times. For many of us The Great Gatsby written by F. Scott Fitzgerald in 1925, represents the Roaring Twenties, and many 20s-themed parties today are inspired by the excessively extravagant parties thrown by young and mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby in his white mansion on Long Island.
1970s We’ll bypass the swinging sixties and move straight to the early seventies, where disco was born. Saturday Night Fever (1977) helped turn the simmering subculture into a mainstream fad. Those that had been too young to enjoy the sixties social revolution wanted something to call their own and so, in their mini-skirts, platform shoes, flared trousers, and mullet hairstyles, they danced the night away. Anyone who admits to being old enough to remember attending house parties in the 1970s will also remember Abigail’s Party, Mike Leigh’s brutally funny comedy drama. From the fashions (floral flock dresses and butterfly collar shirts) to finger food (who fancies another cheesy pineapple one?) set to a soundtrack of Demis Roussos, it’s all horribly true.
Modern times Moving onto modern times; if there’s one thing for certain when it comes to celebrating nowadays, we are spoilt for choice in terms of venues and entertainment. Pubs, bars, hotels and clubs are all popular places to host a special occasion and many now offer additional activities such as cocktail masterclasses. The development of technology has also changed how we celebrate. Music streaming services such as Spotify, for example, have made it easier than ever for us to create our own playlists and act as DJ for the evening. In other developments, shows like MTV’s My Super Sweet 16 – a reality series, which follows privileged 15-year-olds plan extravagant sweet 16 parties – have raised expectations for many British teenagers, and party rings and pass the parcel no longer suffice.
No matter how or where you celebrate, the core ingredients remain the same today as they did hundreds of years ago; great people, delicious food and drink, and some form of entertainment.Take this as a starting point and make it as simple or extravagant as you like – you’re guaranteed to have a ball.

CHEF IN THE HOUSE No kitchen meltdowns or stressed hosts...Chris Wilson joins the guests at a dinner party with a difference.
O
ne nut allergy, two people who don’t eat meat, and one more picky so-and-so who is allergic to shellfish and will eat fish at a push but isn’t too keen... it sounds like a recipe for the dinner party from hell, but it’s just your average suburban gathering for eight people. Even if the hosts can put a menu together and feed everyone, it is likely to be a gruelling experience that sucks all the joy out of what should be one of life’s great pleasures... having a few friends round for a bite to eat. The hosts will most likely spend all day shopping and preparing, and all night cooking and plating up, leaving their friends to their own devices. When the last guest leaves, the poor exhausted saps will be left to ponder over a mountain of washing up... why do we bother? It’s a common problem, but a solution could be close at hand. La Belle Assiette – which translates as ‘the beautiful plate’ – is a company that specialises in making every home dinner party as enjoyable and stressfree for the hosts as it is for the guests. How do they do it? Quite simply, they send a professional chef into your home to do all the hard work, cooking and presenting restaurant-standard food. Tell them how many people are coming, whether any of your guests have any special dietary requirements, and they will do the rest. They even wash up

assured me he could rustle up a dinner party virtually anywhere. “If all you have is a single gas ring, I can cope,” he said. “I Frankie bring the ingredients and my gets to work in the own knives, but I will use kitchen for whatever pots, pans and plates Westside you have. Just show me where managing director things are and leave me to it. Martin “There has been increasing Edwards and his wife, demand for this sort of thing in Jane the last few years. People seem to feel more relaxed if they can have the fine dining experience and leave your kitchen as spotless as they in the comfort of their own homes.” found it. As for those pesky diners with their very Too good to be true? Northside specific dining requirements, had putting a managing director Martin Edwards and his menu together been a headache? “Not at all. wife Jane put it to the test, and early one I’m just making a few adjustments so Friday evening Nigel ‘Frankie’ Franklish everyone gets what they want – and nobody knocked on their front door, looking gets poisoned!” immaculate in chef’s whites. He sounded confident, so I rejoined the Now, as it happens, Martin and Jane have party where our hosts were revelling in the a rather nice kitchen, with a large cooking freedom of having nothing to do but top up range and plenty of work space, but Frankie our glasses and join in the conversation.

‘This is the most stress-free dinner party we have ever held. The food was delicious, beautifully presented and we’ve never had so much time to talk to our guests... and it is lovely to know we can go to bed without having to think about the washing up.’ Soon Frankie was in our midst, bearing platters of smoked salmon and black pudding canapés, bread and olives. No standing on ceremony, the diners dived in and declared them very moreish. So far, so good. Then it was time to be summoned for dinner. Frankie had set the table and devised a first course that everyone could enjoy – a simple combination of wild mushrooms on crostini that was beautifully presented and packed with flavour. Our hosts clearly enjoyed being waited on in their own home. As it happens, Martin enjoys the challenge of matching wine with food, but La Belle Assiette will take care of that too, if required. The main course required some lateral thinking by Frankie. There was pan-fried salmon for the fish eaters, chicken breasts for the abstainers, and the Thai-inspired salad was tweaked to remove the peanuts so our allergy sufferer did not have to grab for the EpiPen. With colourful salads, salsa and rice, we were obviously in the hands of a talented chef whose charming, low key style disguised

a hard-edged professionalism. If there was any stress in cooking such splendid food to order, it was not showing. A deconstructed cookie and cream cheesecake was a definite crowd-pleaser to round things off and, as Frankie gathered up his knives and disappeared into the night (having washed, dried and put away all the dishes, of course), Martin and Jane gave their verdict. “This is the most stress-free dinner party we have ever held. The food was delicious, beautifully presented and we’ve never had so much time to talk to our guests... and it is lovely to know we can go to bed without having to think about the washing up.”

NS Eating Out
All change at Kebabeesh There’s a new look and a new menu on the way, but the dedication to authentic flavours remains the same.
W
ith a major refurb and a new menu planned for the new year, and a rapidly expanding outdoor catering business, these are exciting times for Kebabeesh. One of the region’s longest-standing and best-loved Asian restaurants, Kebabeesh has been the destination restaurant of choice for many curry connoisseurs since it first opened for business 36 years ago. This is a family business with father Jay Durrani and son Ammar driving the changes but their commitment to delivering the finest cuisine from their homeland remains unchallenged. The best curries originate from Lahore in Pakistan, Ammar insists, and our latest visit provided the opportunity to sample some enterprising and flavoursome dishes. Where some menus read like a short novel, Kebabeesh manages to cram a huge amount of variety onto a few pages, with an emphasis on fresh herbs and spices rather than blasts of chilli heat. We began with two fabulous seafood starters. From the specials board a king prawn pakora, juicy king prawns in a crisp spicy batter served with mint sauce and salad, was an ideal appetiser, full of flavour and not too filling. You could say the same thing about the tandoori haddock which was marinated in crushed garlic, coriander, pomegranate and various spices, and barbecued over hot charcoal. The fish was tender and perfectly cooked. For mains we selected from the specials board again for one of Kebabeesh’s signature dishes, lamb chilli dry. For fans of lean, tender lamb this dish is a must, and while the first mouthful suggested a slight sweetness, the combination of tomatoes, fresh ginger, garlic, coriander and onions provided an invigorating spicy kick. No less flavoursome was our other main
NS • page 52
Ammar and course, chicken tikka and Jay Durrani keema. This unusual combination of pot-roasted grilled chicken and minced lamb, with plenty of ginger, garlic and spices, packed a real punch. While the mains were lovely, it is often the side dishes that make the difference when curry is on the menu and Kebabeesh certainly scored highly. Pilau rice was light and buttery, the dall was rich and smooth, and a spicy potato and coriander naan was perfect for mopping up every last drop of curry sauce. Throw in enthusiastic service and a smart, contemporary setting (despite the forthcoming makeover the restaurant looks pretty pristine to me) and this was a meal to remember. Unusually for an Asian restaurant, desserts bring a range of cheesecakes, fruit tarts, and chocolate fudge cakes made by a local specialist chef and daintily presented on
a cake stand. If you yearn for more classical desserts like kulfi or rasmalai they need to be ordered in advance, but we relished the novelty of finishing our spicy meal by sharing a piece of cheesecake. I don’t think this menu needs too much of a shake-up but Ammar, enthused by recent successes catering at major music festivals including Glastonbury and Tramlines in Sheffield, is keen to add an element of street food to the Kebabeesh mix. Meanwhile there’s a busy few months ahead with the Christmas party season just around the corner. If you fancy a break from the cooking this year there is also a special Christmas Day lunch menu with entertainment from a table magician, and a full a la carte New Year’s Eve celebration with a belly dancer.

Give it some oompah! For a foot-stomping night out, head for the Bierkeller and get the party started.
I
f you’re fortunate enough to have been chosen as a best man or bridesmaid you’ll be feeling rather honoured. But with this privileged duty comes the significant – and often stressful – task of organising the stag or hen do. Music, entertainment, and delicious food and drink are all key element of a successful party. But to make sure it’s truly special, choosing a venue that can offer something a little bit different will guarantee it’s one to remember Bierkeller at Sovereign House on South Parade, Leeds is the only Bavarian-themed bar in the city, and the only place you will get real German beer in steins, all served ice cold to your table by waitresses in classic Bavarian dress. Why have one pint in a glass when you can have two? There are a number of different packages available, to cater for various parties and prices range from £10-£20 per person. For £10 you can enjoy a pretzel, shot, guaranteed seating and waitress service, £15 entry includes a pretzel, shot, stein (either lager, cider or cocktail), guaranteed prime seating and waitress service, and £20 entry includes a pretzel, shot, stein, Bavarian meal, best seats in the house and waitress service. On top of this, you can add many different options to your table,

from a spirit bottle with mixers to their famous five-litre table-top kegs. They offer a wide range of lagers, beers, ciders, spirits, shots and new stein cocktails. Why not try the stag and stein special – Jägermeister and a stein – ideal for a stag party. As well as fabulous food and drink, the Bierkeller offers extraordinary entertainment. The amazing Bavarian Stompers play at the bar every Friday and Saturday night and will have you up on your feet – or in most cases, the benches – in no time. They have a reputation as the best British oompah band and in fact, were the first British comedy oompah band to appear at a major German bier festival. Their tremendous vitality and enthusiasm has made them exceptionally popular, and
their show gives audiences a rip-roaring musical journey to the Bavarian Bierkellers, involving the quaffing of liquid refreshment en route. An evening with the Bavarian Stompers starts from 7pm. The Bierkeller’s lovely waitresses make sure everyone’s steins are kept topped up and there’s plenty of music, party games and competitions. By 9pm everyone is in the party spirit and the Bavarian Stompers take you on a journey through the Bierkellers of Germany with their amazing live show. Once the band has finished, the party doesn’t stop there. Party music, shot girls, a sing-a-long and audience participation continues until they close with their resident DJ. Make sure to book in advance, this is a night out you don't want to miss. Whether it's a stag or hen do, an office party, birthday or Christmas celebration, the Bierkeller can cater for everyone. As well as a great party venue, the Bierkeller’s relaxed sociable atmosphere is the ideal place to wind down after a hard day’s work. Or, if you’re looking for a special wine or beer tasting, one of their events will give you a sample of what’s on offer as well as an insight into one of the greatest drinking destinations. The wedding of your dreams
Catering for weddings from 30 to 600, The Craiglands Hotel is well-equipped to make your big day a memorable occasion.
W
hen you picture your big day, what do you see? An intimate wedding with just your nearest and dearest as witnesses? Or a huge celebration involving your whole extended family? At The Craiglands Hotel in Ilkley, you can create the wedding of your dreams, with venue rooms available for as little as 30 and a ballroom for as many as 600 guests. The gorgeous Moorside is the most popular room and has a 180 capacity. Wedding coordinator Sophie Jackson is on hand to make sure that every bride and groom feels special and has everything they need so they can get married without a hitch, with prices starting from just £47.50 per person. With a number of inclusive wedding
packages to choose from, including multicultural ceremonies and receptions, there’s something for every couple. Nothing is too much trouble for Sophie and her dedicated team so relax and allow them to apply their knowledge and experience to planning your perfect day. The Craiglands was built in 1859 as a hydro hotel providing treatments such as massages and Turkish baths. Along with a stunning view and the fresh air of the moors, this hydro hotel was the perfect get away for those wanting to escape the smog of the city. Taking inspiration from the past, the hotel will be starting work on a brand new spa in the basement next year providing treatment rooms, sauna and steam room and a gym. In the meantime, this grand Victorian hotel remains the ideal place for business or
pleasure, combining modern comforts and facilities with a warm, friendly welcome. They host everything from charity events, to conferences and their sprung dancefloor has proven very popular with dance groups who regularly use the ballroom. You can even pop in for a Sunday lunch prepared by their talented chef Paul Marshall. Their Christmas Carnival parties will take place every Friday night throughout December and will include a three-course meal, a fairground featuring sideshows and dancing until 1am, all for just £30 per person. This will be followed by a glamorous New Year’s Eve Masquerade Ball featuring live bands, a disco and a three-course dinner for £76.50 per person. Gary Naylor has recently taken over as general manager, but has been working in the hotel industry for nearly 30 years, having started as a waiter in a hotel when he was still at school, before moving through the ranks and gaining 20 years of management experience. “I look forward to continuing the success of the hotel and delivering the highest standard of service possible at reasonable prices,” says Gary. “The varying venue sizes and location on the historical edge of the moors makes this the most unique hotel around.” If you’d like to find out more about weddings at The Craiglands Hotel, contact Sophie Jackson to arrange an appointment by emailing conferences@craiglands.co.uk or look out for one of their wedding open days on their website www.craiglands.co.uk. Make your house a home Let Anna Morgan’s Interior Design Service create a room for how you live.
N
ext year will mark the tenth anniversary for Anna Morgan, the bespoke upholstery and interiors specialists, based in Ilkley. To mark the milestone, the company, headed up by Chief Designer Emma Bell, have enhanced their interior design service offer after much customer demand. Whilst many readers are aware that Anna Morgan specialises in bespoke upholstery and furniture, you may not know that they also provide an interior design service. “We’d always offered interiors advice alongside our products,” says Emma. “Our speciality remains upholstery, re-upholstery and fine furnishings, but we’ve found our customers increasingly want a complete service, not just a sofa or pair of curtains. For us to create an Anna Morgan home, if you will.” Emma credits this demand to her customers’ current experience of buying sofas and fabrics. She takes a holistic view of every purchase, whether they’re buying a roll of
NS • page 82
wallpaper or a bedroom chair. “I get to know the room it’ll be going in, and how it fits their lifestyle,” says Emma, “Then, I can be sure I’m recommending the right item from our vast library of products.” Though Anna Morgan has their own signature look, they stock every major fabric and wallpaper brand including Romo, Linwood, Warwick, Moon and Casadeco to name a few, as well as manufacturing their own range of high-quality, affordable fabric. Emma established Anna Morgan in 2006 after working as head designer at a major sofa company. With over 18 years of industry experience under her belt, you can be sure that your home is in safe hands. Drawing on her years of interiors expertise, Emma creates rooms that fit your personal style whilst remaining sympathetic to your home’s
period and structure. Emma and her design team will take care of every detail of your home and can supply everything including the wallpaper, curtains and home accessories. “Our style is quintessentially English and we’re proud to champion British-made furniture,” says Emma, “but that doesn’t mean you’ll get an off the shelf design. Our aim is to make your home beautiful, but also for it to work on an everyday level. For example, if you have dogs, a very active lifestyle, or elderly parents who visit often. These are all things we’ll take care to cater for in the detail of the design. It’s got to work for every day, week and month of the year.” Whether you just want an accessory or the full interior design service, Anna Morgan’s aim is to make your home as beautiful as it can possibly be. To book a consultation, call 01943 603 006 or visit the store today.

Business profile Jordan Odu, Director of Pink Gorilla and Hairy Lemon. Give us a brief description of what your business is about. Pink Gorilla/Hairy Lemon is a marketing, events, PR and promotional agency specialising in the lifestyle sector. Our client base is diverse and ranges from national brands such as Topshop, Revolución de Cuba and Benfield Motors to independents such as Bar Soba, Roxy Lanes, Oracle and Stockdales of Yorkshire. The role varies depending on the client brief. It could be a three-month marketing and PR campaign to launch a new business along with a party involving journalists and bloggers, to providing models and promotional staff to Topshop. No two days are ever the same – life at Pink Gorilla is definitely interesting! In a nutshell, what is your role in the business? As director of a small business I’m very hands on. No job is beneath me and I like to get involved in all aspects of the business, from schmoozing clients to helping hand out leaflets at a promotional event.
NS • page 86
My strength lies in sales, pitching for new business and account handling, but last week I was riding around Leeds city centre in an authentic Cuban Van handing out bananas to promote the launch of Revolución de Cuba. I’ve always been very sociable, so meeting new people comes as second nature to me. What are your immediate/long-term plans for your business? We are in the process of rebranding our sister company www.pgvouchers.co.uk which is essentially a discount website for bars, restaurants and lifestyle companies in Leeds. The new PG Promotions site is going to be bigger, better and bolder. We’ll be offering exclusive discounts along with promoting existing offers and events in the city. Watch this space! What are your personal career ambitions? Myself and my business partner – Deborah De Vittoris – only recently merged our two businesses together, and things have just gone
from strength to strength since then. We are now able to offer a much broader range of services, and demand has gone through the roof. Our long-term aim is to grow as a brand, and be able to service clients nationally as well as locally. Have any role models/mentors inspired you in your work? I’m not really inspired by anyone in particular. I love my job and thrive off being busy and winning new accounts. I’m passionate about what I do, and that alone is my driving force. What advice would you have for other would-be men in business? Working for yourself is not easy or for the faint-hearted – you have to be prepared to take risks and the many knock-backs of being self-employed.You also have to be very selfmotivated and willing to do anything to succeed. Brace yourself for the lows as well as the highs, and as clichéd as it sounds, try to do something you genuinely love.

Out of this world... ... and well within your reach. Treat yourself to a once in a lifetime experience at Belmond Hotel Caruso.
P
erched on a cliff above turquoise waters and Italian villas, it’s easy to understand why Ravello boasts a long history as a hideaway for the rich and famous. A scenic one hour drive from Naples International Airport, the former 11th century residence, Belmond Hotel Caruso, is an understated gem of a resort. Many of the 50 rooms benefit from the indescribably beautiful sea view, enjoyed from charming and spacious balconies, and the rest look out over the village or gardens. They are all immaculate, and elegantly decorated with marble bathrooms, antique furniture, and many also have a private garden
and terrace. All come complete with an LCDTV with CD and DVD player, air conditioning, and free internet. All very nice, but it’s the incredibly attentive staff that make this particular jewel in the Belmond crown so priceless. Nothing is too much trouble; service is graceful and gracious. Requests are met with before they have finished being requested! Facilities at the Caruso include an open air heated infinity swimming pool, a spa in the gardens, a gym with panoramic views, and a tennis court. The incredible views from the

infinity pool have ear-marked it as one of the best in the world, and well worth a stay just to drink them in. And Belmond ‘Pool Angels’ are always on hand for anything you may need poolside. The terraced gardens are designed to be explored and head gardener will guide guests through the native olive, lemon and pomegranate rows, as well as the medieval walls discovered during restoration. There are four dining options at Belmond Hotel Caruso, from the Caruso Restaurant serving classic Mediterranean food, and the Cocktail and Piano Bar, which takes on a fabulous ‘house party’ atmosphere after dark, with guests singing along and dancing the night away. Dine under the Amalfi moonlight at the clifftop Belvedere restaurant, a romantic delight, highlighting timehonored recipes from Naples and southern Italy. The Pool Restaurant is a great place to soak up the atmosphere and feast on freshly prepared brick-baked pizza to die for… or for multi visits to the wonderful salad buffet. For the health (and weight!) conscious, a gym provides bikes, treadmills, weights and personal training sessions, as well as pilates, stretching, yoga and spinning classes.
Set in an airy white building amidst the legendary hotel gardens, the Caruso Wellness Centre offers treatments aimed at revitalising the body and restoring the spirit. A complimentary shuttle service is available to nearby Amalfi and Positano, and several boating options can take you along to unique coastal villages.
