Willow Farm: A substantial detached farmhouse in an attractive rural location with equestrian facilities and land, extending to approximately six acres, offers in excess of £800,000

Richard Waring

Moving forward THOMLINSONS MAY HAVE A TRADITIONAL BACKGROUND BUT THEIR MODERN APPROACH IS HELPING THEM STAY HEAD AND SHOULDERS ABOVE THE COMPETITION. hen we think of estate agents, our minds don’t immediately turn to farms, but this is exactly what Thomlinsons in Wetherby specialise in. What’s more, it is what has kept them going for decades. Thomlinsons was established in 1870 so is about to celebrate 150 years in business. The business originally provided an agricultural valuation service for local farmers and estate owners together with a pub valuation service. Originally based in Tadcaster, Thomlinsons moved to Wetherby, where they set up a cattle market after the First World War. Farmers would walk cattle, sheep and pigs from farms many miles away or bring them by train from further afield. They subsequently held regular furniture auctions in the market until its closure approximately 15 years ago. Richard Waring joined Thomlinsons 28 years ago and his father was in partnership with his current joint director, Peter Ziegler. Peter has an agricultural background and is now predominantly involved in the agricultural side of the business. They sell and let farms and land, together with undertaking rent reviews, compensation

claims and all aspects of agricultural law. Richard became a partner to Peter approximately ten years ago and the business became a limited company thereafter. “We are now proud to lead the way in estate agency in the Wetherby area and provide a modern approach with a traditional attitude,” says Richard. “When I arrived at Thomlinsons I saw an opportunity for our estate and farmer clients to rent out empty cottages on their estates and farms. Generally, estate agents were not keen on rentals, but this started our rental business which grew rapidly over the following years and is now still a very important part of the business.” Subsequently, Richard employed Keith Innocent, who had worked locally for many years in estate agency, to set up their sales department and this is going from strength to strength, with new sales personnel having recently been added. There are now eight full-time staff dealing with sales and lettings, providing a wealth of experience and advice. They are open seven days a week, so always have staff available to deal with any rental issues or update vendors with sales feedback.

They have recently re-branded and upgraded their website and tweaked their marketing strategy, using responsive code for their website and bespoke design for their advertising. “We aim to stand out from other local agents,” continues Richard. “Personally, I have been heavily involved in strategic land planning, dealing with several large housing schemes around Selby, Leeds, York and Harrogate. “This is a very busy market with the government’s requirements for new homes and national house builders actively looking for sites. Although there was slight caution in the market after Brexit, the market seems to have settled and the new homes market remains active. “Moving forward, we are looking to expanding all aspects of the business. We have a full, friendly and experienced team who are always happy to help and advise, either in branch, online or on the phone.” Thomlinsons 24 High Street, Wetherby, LS22 6LZ Tel: 01937 582748 www.thomlinsons.co.uk

INTERVIEW

Beyond the boardroom STOWE FAMILY LAW’S MARILYN STOWE SPEAKS TO NORTHSIDE ABOUT WORK, FAMILY AND HER FAVOURITES. towe Family Law is one of the UK’s largest specialist family law firms and has built an international reputation for its excellence. The firm’s range of legal services include a dedicated wills, tax, trust and probate department. They are also one of the few legal firms to offer in-house forensic accountancy specialists, helping clients establish the true value of assets and achieve full financial disclosure. Since the firm was founded more than 30 years ago, its lawyers have acted for more than 12,000 clients, and members of the team often make appearances in the national media, providing insights into topical legal issues. Senior partner Marilyn Stowe is now one of the best-known divorce lawyers in the country. She spoke to Northside about family, work and her favourites in TV, film and sport.

S

I am based mainly in Harrogate from where the entire firm is run, but I also visit our offices in London quite often and visit our other offices to keep in touch. Stowe Family Law has grown to its present size after 30 years of hard work. I have plans to develop it further over the next five years or so.

I am a senior partner at the firm, which has ten offices across England. The firm began in the eighties, from a converted cobblers shop in Halton, East Leeds. I was born and live in Leeds, I have never had any desire to move away, I love Yorkshire. 12 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

Favourite musician?

Coldplay, I love them. Favourite film?

What is the best and worst thing about your job?

I like all our team and I enjoy helping clients through difficult times. I’ve worked all my life the same way. I can’t think of a genuine downside. Do you have an office nickname?

The nickname I know about is ‘The Boss’, which doesn’t seem too bad. What is home life like for you?

What do you do at Stowe Family Law?

of Leeds University, although Ben was the only one to graduate with a first. The law is a bit of a thing in our family, but we all work in different areas.

I am married to Grahame Stowe, a tribunal judge. We have a son, Benjamin, who is a solicitor in London and in September 2016 he married Tara Lawrence, granddaughter of the late Michael Lawrence, a well-known Leeds solicitor. Grahame, Ben and I are all law graduates

First Wives Club (obviously!) with Diane Keaton, Goldie Hawn and Bette Midler. It’s a very funny film but it does send out an upbeat message, which is crucial. Which sports team do you support and why?

I’ve supported Leeds Rhinos since I first went with my father when I was seven. Stowe Family Law has a partnership with Leeds Rhinos Foundation, to help girls who want to play rugby league, it gives them selfconfidence. Favourite sportsman/player?

Nicola Adams, that fabulous smile! I know her mum, they’re a lovely family. Are you an optimist or a pessimist and why?

Optimist of course, I dare to dream.

INTERVIEW

Last book you read and what did you think of it?

I don’t read much anymore, instead I spend a lot of time writing for the Marilyn Stowe Blog. The blog started in 2007 and is all about family law meeting family life, it now has three other writers and well over 60,000 hits a month. The last book I actually read was my own 275-page book Divorce and Splitting Up. I wrote it to guide people no longer able to get legal aid. It is available online at 99p with all proceeds going to The Children’s Society. The book is a best-seller and has sold 10,000 copies so far. Last film you saw and what did you think of it?

Spectre. I’m quite partial to Daniel Craig. Favourite TV show?

Veep, I love it. How not to run an office. Favourite dish and who cooks it?

I’m a terrible cook, let’s move on.

What is your proudest moment?

I’ve found that personal achievements are fine but when your children do well, that’s far more rewarding. Most embarrassing moment?

My most embarrassing moment was years ago when I was a young mum trying to cope with a baby who had been up all night. With no babysitter that morning, I left him with my sister and rushed to a big posh client meeting. I turned up to meet a partner in the opposing firm and apologised for being late, but I had, in fact, turned up a day early! However, it made me determined to win and I did. Ideal evening after work/what do you like to do in your spare time?

I’m an exercise freak, I’ve run long distance, including many half marathons, for 30 years. Now, with two arthroscopies on the same knee, I’m getting back into it, but in the meantime I’m cycling on a static bike, throwing 12kg kettlebells and rebounding on

a mini trampoline. All at home three or four times per week, where no-one can see me. Exercise is vital and keeps me positive and sane. It helps me clarify things and sometimes I’ve solved cases when I’ve had time to think things through on a run. Sum up your career in three words.

Done my best. Stay safe and be seen out there COMMUTING ESSENTIALS FOR WINTER FROM SPECIALIZED CONCEPT STORE. ritish roads are ever more saturated with cyclists winding their way to work in the mornings, laden with backpacks and panniers packed with crumpled suits, dry shampoo, and chicken and rice. This particular group of cyclists share the road with the grumpiest of motorists so have to be 100 per cent vigilant, no matter how early it is. During the winter months, it becomes even more perilous. As a result it’s important that your kit and clothing is of the highest quality – to maximise safety, protection and peace-of-mind.

B

THE LIGHTS

Anyone who has ridden to or from work in the middle of December will testify that In low light or bad weather it can be very difficult to see and be seen on the bike. We’ve covered both bases with our range of lights , with sets suitable for any terrain, condition or time of day. Customers can choose between the Flux and Stix ranges, both of which provide unbeatable features and competitive pricing. The Flux range is all about power and reliability, giving the rider the confidence that they can both see their own way and be seen by approaching vehicles from any direction. The lumens on offer in the Flux lights are as close to a car’s headlight as you’re likely to find, with a sculpted beam that puts light exactly where you need it, maximising every lumen and providing excellent peripheral vision (without blinding oncoming cyclists or motorists!) All the lights in the range are USB-rechargeable and hold 60 per cent more runtime capacity than previous versions. The Elite model actually has up to 400 lumens, enough to luminate objects up to half a kilometre away. The 14 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

Expert provides up to 1,200 and incorporates a raised centre reflector for a car-like high and low beam option, operated through an illuminated remote for unparalleled control. The Flux Expert tail light sets a new standard for rear visibility offering up to 110 lumens. The light boasts visibility up to 1km – making it the perfect accessory for riding in low light conditions or at night. While the Flux range offers all-round performance and versatility in both urban and rural settings, the Stix range is a great accompaniment for the inner-city commuter. Also USB-rechargable, the Stix lights (Sport and Comp models) feature wide-angle beams, multiple modes including flashing and constant, and a flexible mounting system that works with most handlebars and seat posts. THE JACKET

We developed the Deflect(TM) Reflect jacket by incorporating the very latest safety innovations to maximise performance. This thing really is the Swiss Army knife of jackets, performing a handful of duties from protection to visibility. With wind and water-resistant Deflect(TM) material the jacket is both lightweight and breathable, avoiding the boil-in-the-bag tendencies of many of its counterparts. Furthermore, the sleeves are removable, turning it into a gilet so it is effectively two pieces of kit in one package.

Want to hear the coolest thing about it though? It’s made with Schoeller(R) fabric with 3M(R) reflective technology, which takes millions of microscopic glass beads and permanently seals them to the fabric structure. This increases visibility when it encounters light; a feature that will not wash out over time – unlike other reflective treatments and materials. THE BIKE

Last but not least, if you are looking for the ideal commuting bike, look no further than our Sirrus and Vita bikes. Great if you’re thinking about starting to commute, but don't have a steed to do it on yet. Designed for men and women respectively, the Sirrus and Vita are both reliable, easy to maintain, and fun to ride. Both ranges feature rack and mudguard mounts so that you can carry gear with ease and keep spray and muck at bay in bad weather. The geometry provides a perfect balance of comfort and efficiency. Finally, the punctureresistant Nimbus tyres and strategically-placed reflective graphics come together to make the Sirrus and Vita bikes perfect for commuting with peace of mind in the city.

TRAVEL

Dingle Links

Wild and wonderful JOHN MURPHY HITS IRELAND’S WILD ATLANTIC WAY AND FINDS WARM HOSPITALITY, FANTASTIC FOOD AND, BEST OF ALL, GREAT GOLF. “

er eyes, they shone like diamonds …” Words from a famous Dubliners’ song but an apt description of the Lady Captain who arrived to greet our visiting party at Killorglin Golf Club in Kerry. It may not be the best course in the South West of Ireland or the most famous but in terms of hospitality, spirit and warmth it has few rivals. Anne Kenny Foley was justifiably brimming with pride when she met us and introduced us to the club. The civility extended to a serenade over lunch, performed by the chef on accordion and her daughter on vocals. A shared pint of the “Black Stuff ” with club members merely enhanced the atmosphere of mirth and merriment. Only in Ireland… Anne is justifiably proud of her course. The

H

clubhouse, with its panoramic windows, provides stunning views across the country with the course framed on one side by the Macgillicuddy Reeks Range (including Carrauntouhill, Ireland’s highest mountain) and Dingle Bay and the Slieve Mish mountains beyond. The course, costing a mere 25 euros a round, is only 20 minutes from Killarney, one of the most popular tourist destinations in Ireland. It lies at the heart of Killarney National Park with its lakes and mountains providing the perfect location for walking, cycling, boating, fishing and of course golf. From our base, the rather grand and comfortable Hotel Arbutus in the heart of the town, we enjoyed rounds at three other courses but Killarney can also be used as a

starting point to enjoy the rugged and beautiful Wild Atlantic Way. The Wild Atlantic Way is a 1,500 mile driving route along the west coast of Ireland passing through nine counties and three provinces, stretching from County Donegal’s Inishowen peninsula in the north to what is commonly known as Ireland’s culinary capital in the south, Kinsale. A tourist going south from Killarney can head for Skibbereen, firstly navigating the beautiful Ring of Kerry, the Iveragh peninsula. Beauty and heritage are fused in this part of the world. On the one hand there is the beautiful Rossbeigh beach – one of Europe’s finest – and on the other hand there is the heritage of Derrynane House – former home to Daniel O’Connell, “The Liberator”. Further south the Wild Atlantic Way will

TRAVEL

Killarney Golf and Fishing Club

“There is a feeling at both north and south extremes of the Wild Atlantic Way that you are on the edge of the world.” take you through stunning scenery as you head to Dursey Sound, Castletownbere Harbour and the popular Glengarriff. Don’t forget to take in the verdant gardens on Garnish Island and enjoy the views at Bantry Bay. There is a feeling at both north and south extremes of the Wild Atlantic Way that you are on the edge of the world. Get to Baltimore Harbour, outside Skibbereen, and you realise there is nothing but water between you and the next piece of land – America. The countryside is enchanting with loughs running into the sea and walking trails around and on top of rugged coastal promontories. A long holiday or a number of trips would be needed to appreciate the Wild Atlantic Way in all its glory as there so many highlights. At the north there is the magical district of Connemara where turquoise, crystal clear water laps unspoilt, white sand beaches and ancient thatched, cottages dot the horizon. Go south on the route from Connemara and take in the party city of Galway, the stunning Cliffs of Moher and the Dingle Peninsula, famed for its clifftop views of the crashing Atlantic waves below. Be brave and drive the Conor Pass. If you’re lucky you may

catch sight of Dingle’s famed aquatic visitor, Fungi, the Dolphin. This part of Ireland is also home to some of the country’s finest restaurants, which is no surprise given the quality and volume of local produce. Rozzers restaurant at Killeen House Hotel in Killarney is a perfect example: fine local food supported by a great atmosphere. Ashes Restaurant in Dingle offers the same: the turbot I sampled was exceptional. The Wild Atlantic Way must also be unique in being home to some of the best golf courses in the world in such a condensed strip of land. It features marquee courses such as Ballybunion, Waterville, Tralee and Lahinch alongside the likes of Ballyliffin, Connemara, Dooks and The Old Head. We were fortunate to play three other courses in this area. The drive on the Atlantic Way to Dingle Golf Links (Ceann Sibeal) is spectacular as you traverse narrow lanes to reach the very tip of the Dingle Peninsula. The course is equally spectacular as you attempt to define holes hewed out of dunes and long wispy grass. Beaufort is a more traditional inland parkland course with wellmaintained fairways and greens while Killarney Golf and Fishing Club is the epitome of the imposing and traditional championship venue.

Top of the charts AWARD-WINNING ACCENT CLOTHING HAS FOUND A HAPPY MARRIAGE BETWEEN FASHION AND MUSIC. PHOEBE SEYMOUR FINDS OUT MORE. ot many independent clothes stores can boast three awards – never mind three in one week – but Accent Clothing in Leeds city centre’s Queens Arcade has achieved just that. After being crowned Best Fashion Retailer at the Leeds Lifestyle Awards 2016, security firm BACIL Awards named them Best Independent Retailer, before PRS for Music Foundation awarded them with a music makeover. The store was shortlisted from hundreds of others to win the prize, which will result in them getting £5,000 worth of music equipment, and they plan to host a live music event to celebrate. This may sound strange, but Accent Clothing understand how synonymous fashion and music can be. In recent years, the store has sponsored local up-and-coming stars and export musicians. They are proud to dress local acts for photoshoots and gigs and their latest collaboration was with Thomas Teago who has worked with the likes of N Dubz rapper, Fazer. They’ve also supported local Olympians Nile Wilson and Kadeena Cox, as well as boxers Josh Warrington and Jack Bateson who are also originally from Leeds. Accent Clothing is one of the longeststanding retail independents in Leeds, renowned for its denim and over 30 years’

experience in the industry. Accent was established by Martin Schneider in 1984 and is very much a family business. Martin’s wife Louise is joint managing director, his son Jack is the general store manager and menswear buyer, whilst his daughter Becky is the website manager and womenswear buyer. The business is now made up of the original menswear store, kids’ store (from new born to 16 years) Accent Juniors and a womenswear store. First opened as three individual stores, they were finally joined together at the site of the original store at Queens Arcade in 2013. Accent prides itself on its customer service and feels it is vitally important to create strong relationships with customers. “It’s great that we are still going so strong,” says Becky. “We believe in giving our customers a 100 per cent personal shopping experience. We want everyone to feel special. We appeal to all generations and a lot of our regulars are the children and grandchildren of our original customers. “We also enjoy working with new stars and look forward to doing more to support our local community, which is where our upcoming music event comes in.” And it’s no wonder the store’s labels have star appeal. Brands include Canada Goose,

Belstaff, Barbour, Moncler, Paige Jeans, True Religion and Armani and Accent were one of the first fashion retailers in the city to stock and sell designer brands such as Replay and Grenson. As time has passed and new trends have emerged each season, Accent follow these trends and introduce new brands into their store to ensure their customers continue to get the best of the best. “We offer a wide range of denim – especially jeans,” adds Becky. “We sell more pairs of Replay jeans than any other independent store in Europe and we are the largest stockists of Matchless jackets in the world, other than American department store, Bloomingdales.” “We’ve recently given the store a bit of a facelift and are looking forward to showing it off to our new and regular customers.” So whether you are an emerging local star looking for the perfect outfit or are simply looking for a fashionable winter coat for anyone in the family, Accent Clothing are at your service. HEALTH

DEAR DOCTOR... MR ABEEZAR SARELA IS A CONSULTANT GASTROINTESTINAL AND WEIGHT LOSS SURGEON AT SPIRE LEEDS HOSPITAL AND LEEDS TEACHING HOSPITALS NHS TRUST. Question:

For the past few months, I’ve been getting pain in the upper part of my tummy. Also, there has been some burning in my chest, a feeling of sickness and burping. I’ve actually been sick one or two times. What should I do? Answer:

Your symptoms may be for a condition called “dyspepsia” which you should consultant your GP about. If you are older than 50 years, your GP is likely to refer you for an endoscopy – a ‘camera test’ of the inside of your gullet and stomach. If you are younger than 50 years, your GP may first do a test for an infection called Helicobacter pylori in the lining of your stomach. If the test is positive, you will be treated with a course of antibiotics and anti-acid

drugs. If the test is negative, your GP may advise an endoscopy. An endoscopy may show inflammation in your stomach or duodenum: this is called gastritis or duodenitis. There may be an ulcer along with the inflammation. Or, there may be inflammation and erosions of the lining of your gullet because of acid reflux: called oesophagitis. Most seriously, there may be cancer. Another cause for dyspepsia is gallbladder stones. Pain from gallstones is usually just below the right side of your ribs. Eating fatty food may trigger the pain. If gallstones are suspected, the first test is an ultrasound scan. Symptomatic gallstones are treated by keyhole surgery to remove the gallbladder. Digestion of food is not affected by removal of the gallbladder. For some people, no cause can be found

for their dyspepsia. This is called “functional dyspepsia”. A proportion of people with functional dyspepsia have a condition called gastroparesis. In gastroparesis, the stomach empties slowly even though there is no blockage. The illness that goes along with gastroparesis most commonly is diabetes. A stomach pacemaker may help in severe gastroparesis.

ENTERTAINING

Chris Walker and his partner Sharron invite you for dinner… black tie is optional!

How to throw the perfect dinner party IN HIS DAY JOB HE PLAYS A SOAP OPERA COP, BUT OFF-SCREEN HE LOVES TO PLAY THE ATTENTIVE HOST. ACTOR AND CELEBRITY MASTERCHEF CONTESTANT CHRIS WALKER REVEALS HIS TOP TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL DINNER PARTY TO MOLLY McGREEVY

42 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

ou may know Chris Walker as Rob Hollins, a policeman in BBC daytime soap Doctors, but when he isn’t donning his uniform in front of the cameras, Chris loves to entertain at home, throwing dinner parties for his friends and family. Chris’s love for food led him to compete in Celebrity Masterchef, where he reached the semi-finals, creating wonderful dishes for judges Greg Wallace and John Torode, but his passion for cooking began when he left the family home in Yorkshire and moved to London. “Cooking wasn’t that important to me until I left home, then I started making standard things like a Bolognese or a chilli and I became fascinated,” said Chris. Fuelled by his new found love for food, Chris started collecting cookbooks and now has a couple of hundred at home, covering every cuisine imaginable. He would often prepare meals for fellow actors whilst touring the UK, and this soon grew into hosting dinner parties.

Y

Chris’s prowess in the kitchen didn’t go unnoticed, and a friend at The Regent Hotel, Doncaster, asked him to host gourmet nights on a Friday, each one themed round a different cuisine. “I cooked nine-course gourmet meals for up to 44 people, I wanted to prove to myself by charging people money. When you invite people round to your house they’re not going to tell you the food is rubbish, because that would be rude. But people will when they have to pay for it, I charged quite a lot of money and people kept coming back again and again, so that was great.” For Chris, food is about bringing people together around the table. He said: “These days things have changed, there’s so much food you can microwave and so many takeaways available. When I was a lad people sat round the table and shared family times, and that is what is important to me, to create that ambience.” With so much entertaining experience, Chris shared his tips and tricks for throwing a wonderful dinner party.

ENTERTAINING

Being a good host

On Chris’s menu

“The thing about dinner parties is that the host has to be there, if the host is in the kitchen all the time, it ruins the evening for them and their guests. A host should get a chance to sit round the table and talk, because that’s what food is all about. That’s one of the most important things about food, it should bring people together. It’s all about preparation at a dinner party, that’s the real secret. You need a starter that is made up, a main course that can be left, and a pre-made dessert, whether that be hot or cold. I recommend using your slow cooker, make something two days before and it’ll improve in the fridge. On the day itself, you’re presenting food rather than cooking it – that’s the key to it all. You don’t want to be serving fillet steak to eight people when you have to cook it to order, that’s restaurant stuff. That doesn’t make for a conducive dinner party.”

ON ARRIVAL “You want some nibbles out already, something that people can get stuck into straight away like olives, especially if you’re inviting people who haven’t met before. Make sure there’s a drink waiting for them, either a cocktail or a glass of bubbles.” TO START “A smoked mackerel pate works very well. You can buy the mackerel already smoked and mix it through with some crème fraiche and some capers. Stir through some sultanas soaked with wine and serve that with some salad, some melba toast, butter and you’re done.” MAIN “Try ox cheek, it’s just amazing, it’s superb. Cook it for six to eight hours in the slow cooker and it’ll be the best beef you’ve ever tasted. I do it a day or two before, put a bottle of wine in there, put carrots in huge and whole and leave them to cook. I would brown the beef first, cut it into big pieces, and then add red wine, beef stock and huge vegetables, also add onions and thicken it later using either cornflour or a mixture of butter and plain flour in a paste.”

Where to source ingredients “Use your local market. Of course we all use supermarkets, but if you get a good relationship with your butcher and your fishmonger they’ll help you, they’ll hang meat for you longer than a supermarket will, they’ll give you special cuts, they’ll look after you.”

Drinks “Always team drinks and wine. The first thing is not to be scared of wine, it’s there to be enjoyed. No one should be snobbish about wine, in this day and age you can get some great wines for a really good price. You can get a lovely bottle of wine for five or six quid, but if you’re having a dinner party and want to make it a bit special, pay a bit more and it’s so much better. Matching wine to food is great fun. You want to start with a white wine or a sparkling wine, or you can do cocktails, then move onto red, then port and brandy. A good idea for dinner parties is to choose a cocktail and make it in a punchbowl, at the moment I’m loving pornstar martinis. Make it up in a nice big bowl, don’t put ice in it, instead fill empty spirit bottles ¾ full with water and freeze them. That keeps the cocktail cold and doesn’t dilute it. Get a ladle and everyone can serve themselves.”

Music and entertainment “I would always have a little bit of

CHEESEBOARD “Cheese goes on the table next. By bringing out some cheese and biscuits you’re giving yourself chance to nip back into the kitchen and prepare dessert, it buys you time.” DESSERT “Apple and blackberry crumble with custard is a good hot option, or prepare a cold dessert the day before.”

background music, like my food I like everything. I love classical, I love jazz, I love heavy rock, you want to be putting on something a bit background. If you’re serving at Christmas, obviously get some carols and some Bublé on, or a bit of Nat King Cole. It depends how you’re theming your dinner party, during the World Cup and other football tournaments I choose a theme based on a team playing. For example you might do Brazilian food and choose your music accordingly.”

Good food, good wine and good company – the ingredients for a successful dinner party

For a more informal dinner party “There are lots of great ideas to make a dinner party less formal. One thing you can do is get a leg of lamb and cook it until it falls apart and then shred that on the table. Then have lots of wraps and different ingredients so people can make their own wraps; you can do that with beef and pork as well. If you’re going to do South East Asian or Chinese food get all the ingredients in bowls in front of everyone with part-cooked veg and meat, then serve a lovely homemade stock in teapots on the table so guests can pour their own red hot stock into their bowl and everything becomes warm again, usually served with noodles. You could do the same with Mexican. It’s nice to put big bowls of food on the table and let people help themselves, that breaks the ice as well.”

One final tip? “Go and read up on what you’re going to do. Don’t be afraid of food, don’t ever apologise for your food in front of your guests and be confident. Don’t poison anyone though, you don’t want your guests being ill.”

INTERVIEW

Healthy option FILMORE AND UNION SUPREMO ADELE ASHLEY TALKS TO NORTHSIDE ABOUT THE SECRET TO HER SUCCESS. dele Ashley, 45, has always had a firm interest in health and wellbeing. When she struggled to find healthy options when eating out, she took matters into her own hands and set up Filmore & Union, a healthy food restaurant company that promotes clean eating as part of a balanced lifestyle. Today the company has eight restaurants, 200 staff and a turnover of £3million. Northside spoke to Adele about her rise to success.

A

What was the inspiration behind Filmore & Union?

My passion for the power of pure food was borne out of frustration. I previously owned a chain of wellness clinics in Yorkshire and met endless clients who struggled to find pure, healthy food when eating out. In 2012, Filmore & Union was born, a restaurant brand that provides a vibrant selection of fresh, unprocessed food which is also delicious, served for breakfast lunch and dinner. What do you do within the company?

As the owner I am involved in all aspects of the Filmore & Union brand, ensuring the strict ethos is adhered to and maintained across food, service and marketing. Even with a strong operations team, I still schedule to work within the eight restaurant sites to constantly improve customer service levels and gain menu feedback as I do all the food development. What is your company ethos?

We only serve pure, natural and wholesome food, and everything is made in house and more importantly from scratch, using locallysourced seasonal ingredients. We are passionate about providing food allergy sufferers with interesting options when eating out, which is illustrated with our coeliac accreditation and gluten-free menus and cakes, which are made in our gluten-free bakery in Wetherby. We contribute heavily to charity and the 46 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

local community by holding healthy cookery classes and sponsoring local football teams and loads more. We are more than just a restaurant, we are a local community hub where all generations meet and enjoy pure natural food made locally. What moments of your career so far stand out?

We donated a Filmore & Union café to an autistic charity in Leeds last year and that was a fulfilling moment. Plus every day I receive support and love from my customers some who struggle to eat out anywhere else due to their dietary intolerances. Why is it good to do business in Wetherby, Leeds and Harrogate?

Our brand is extremely community focused, with a particular focus on making our communities healthier, hence why we have such a strict ethos underpinning the brand. Our customers in Harrogate, Wetherby and Leeds have high standards and therefore understand our ethos wholeheartedly and as

we are a local brand its crucial for us to support our community. Have you got a five-year goal for the company?

A plan has been hatched for the nationwide roll out of the Filmore & Union café/restaurant/deli/take-out model. We also have a structured six-month brand consolidation and maximisation programme to include own-label retail brand extension and a commercial catering division. If you weren’t doing this, what would you be doing?

I would have a dog rescue centre – hence why we accept dogs! Find us in: York Petergate Harrogate Wetherby Skipton

ometimes the oddest combinations work the best. Providing contemporary American-inspired dishes in an old-fashioned English setting, Pavement Vaults in York is proving that opposites attract a huge following. Pavement Vaults is the only restaurant and bar in the city to complement authentic smoke barbecue dishes with a selection of refreshing craft beers including locally brewed beers by Tapped Brew Co. The business is part of the Pivovar Group and anyone who has been to one of their award-winning craft beer bars will know just how quirky and steeped in history their venues can be. York Tap, Harrogate Tap and Sheffield Tap are all based in train stations and have been gorgeously restored in an Edwardian style. Similarly, Pavement Vaults also has links with old modes of travel. The building was originally part of Pavement, a medieval street dating back to 1378, but was divided in order to make way

for Piccadilly. Prior to its demolition, the site was a coaching inn and the vaults were where the horses were housed. The White Swan Hotel was built on the site in 1912 and the Centre Bar, inside the hotel, was a popular hangout for York’s young hedonists. The hotel was finally closed in 1982 and lay dormant until Pivovar founders, Jonathan Holdsworth and Jamie Hawksworth saw the potential in the building and opened Pavement Vaults beneath the historic site of the hotel in November 2015. Seeing how many chain restaurants dominated the area and how well smoke barbecue eateries were doing in neighbouring cities, Jamie and Jonathan felt the time had come to introduce something different. “We’re the first smoke barbecue restaurant in York,” says general manager, Sam Wheatley. “Jamie and Jon noticed that a lot of chain restaurants were doing similar things, whilst other independent restaurants tended to cater more to tourists. They saw this as a chance to

do something different. Pavement Vaults is geared to both tourists and locals. We have a loyal following and already get a lot of regulars.” Sam is something of a hospitality veteran, having worked in the licensing trade for nearly 20 years. In this time, he has come into contact with a number of similarly experienced individuals in the pub industry, so when it came to assembling a management team who were knowledgeable about beer, he knew just who to ask. “Our staff have had a variety of roles between them,” says Sam. “You’re only as strong as your team and I feel we cover all the bases.” Having a knowledgeable catering team is equally important to Sam. All of their chefs have been trained by three-times UK National BBQ Champion Andy Annat and the restaurant even uses an authentic Ole Hickory smoke oven imported from the US. All of their delicious cuts of meat are butchered in-house and you can enjoy the sight and scent of your food cooking thanks to their open-kitchen. Though well-known for supplying good beer, it’s not the only tipple they offer. A contemporary cocktail menu, some rare spirits and a fine selection of wines are available to complement all their dishes. And if smoke barbecue isn’t for you, they also serve burgers, fish, pizzas and an interesting range of vegetarian dishes. They also have a couple of events planned

Pavement Vaults will be providing a special smoke house menu to pair with their pints and brewery representatives will be on hand to answer any questions you might have. EDUCATION

Meet the head

THE CUSTODIANS OF SOME OF OUR LOCAL LEARNING ESTABLISHMENTS SHARE THE SECRETS OF A SUCCESSFUL EDUCATION. BY RACHEL MARTIN.

Helen Stiles Richmond House School

Kate Henebury The Little Gym Harrogate & Leeds Having studied Sports Science at University, Kate Henebury joined the British Army and served for four years in The Royal Artillery, leaving as a Captain and relocating to Yorkshire in 2002 to be near her husband-to-be. After embarking on a career in executive recruitment, Kate knew she wanted to work for herself and be able to spend more time with her family. Sport and exercise had always been a passion of Kate’s and with two young girls she was keen that they grew up with the same passion. It was at this point that she discovered The Little Gym concept and began to look for a property in Harrogate. “The search took time as there were only gyms in London at this stage, and was at times it was very frustrating, but I was determined the concept was right for Harrogate – the rest is history. “The Little Gym Harrogate opened in 2010 when I was pregnant with my third child Alf. It was a crazy time as a mother, as my other children were only four and two, but an exciting time as a new gym owner. “Six years on we have over 600 children attending in Harrogate every week and we opened in Leeds in April this year, and are still growing rapidly – with over 300 children attending already. “Our classes are for children from four moths to 12 years and we also offer popular birthday parties and holiday camps. “We work closely with the community in Harrogate and look to do the same in Leeds; with charity events and sponsorship of school and nursery events. “We are currently looking for a site to open The Little Gym in York within the next 12 months.”

Helen officially became headteacher of Richmond House School, Far Headingley, at the start of September this year, when the previous head Jane Disley retired. “As I have been here for only a short time, I intend to continue to build on the already excellent standards, whilst developing each child into well rounded, confident and talented individuals who feel proud of their personal achievements. I am keen to maintain the unique family feel of the school, and to ensure Richmond House continues to be a school where children are happy to learn. “We currently have 211 boys and girls on roll, aged from 3-11 years, and class sizes are presently at a maximum of 18, with two classes per year – enabling each child to be treated as an individual. “We offer specialist teaching in a wide range of subjects including music, PE and French, which are taught from nursery, and our pupils leave us at 11 with continued outstanding 11+ examination results – last year more than a third of our leavers were awarded scholarships. “We are proud to be one of the few independent schools in Yorkshire to have achieved the highest grade of ‘excellent’ in all categories in our most recent ISI inspection, and offer over 40 extra-curricular clubs and activities each week, alongside a number of peripatetic music lessons. “Our school choir have performed in concerts across the county and we are very proud that they have been invited back this Christmas to perform at Wakefield Cathedral, with the Yorkshire Philharmonic Choir. “The school is a beautiful Victorian building set within ten acres of sports pitches and fields, and we have a great sporting reputation; playing competitive fixtures and tournaments against local schools in football, rugby, netball, rounders, hockey, swimming and athletics. “Every year the children choose a local charity to support, and this year our chosen charity is Martin House Children’s Hospice. We also have an ongoing link with the Open Arms Richmond House Foster Home in Malawi, for which the school raised funds to build over ten years ago.” Richmond House School 170 Otley Road, Far Headingley, Leeds, LS16 5LG Tel: 0113 275 2670 www.rhschool.org

Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate Independent Education Girls & Boys 3 to 19 years Day & Boarding Thorpe Underwood, Yorkshire. Phone: 01423 333 330 Email: info@QE.org Web: www.QE.org

Are we all about academics? No, but were you aware the Daily Telegraph and The Times both rank QE College as the top most academically successful day and boarding school in the North for A*/ A grades at A Level and equivalent results and our Faculty of Queen Ethelburga’s, the second most academically successful co-educational day and boarding school in the North for A*/ A grades at A Level and equivalent results?

Are we all about Sport? No independent school in the North has the equivalent of our £30m Sports Village. A parent said we are now in a league above the rest. See: www.qesportsvillage.org

Are we all about superb facilities? No, but we have invested over £80m in superb new teaching facilities and resources in the last 8 years - way more than any other independent school in the North.

Are we all about boarding? No, but no one comes close to the quality of our boarding accommodation. The best in the UK. All bedrooms have private bathroom, air-con, TV, phone & mini-kitchen.

A LEVEL RESULTS 2016 QE COLLEGE Overall pass rate 100% A*/A - A level results - 87% A*/B - A level results - 98% QE FACULTY Overall pass rate 100% A*/A - A level results - 84% A*/B - A level results - 96% “We were looking for our children to change schools. However in the independent sector this has financial implications. Our problems in this regard were solved by the offer of Day or Boarding Awards (our choice) for both children. They moved, are now happy, and doing very well. QE is growing in size because it is run in a refreshing, modern and much better way. There are plenty of day children.”

Enjoy a 6th Form education at QE and pay no fees!.... Day Award up to £25,000, Boarding Award up to £65,000 If your child’s GCSE grades are predicted 10 Grade A star GCSE’s worth up to 100% of the fees 9 A star and 1 A Grade GCSE’s worth up to 80% of the fees 8 A star and 2 A Grade GCSE’s worth up to 60% of the fees 7 A star and 3 A Grade GCSE’s worth up to 40% of the fees

Are we all about day pupils? No, but it is interesting to note our day fees are, on average, over 14% less cost than other local independent schools and our bus service covers a very big local area.

Is it all about Scholarships and Awards? No, but then again who else offers over £3m in Scholarships and Awards every year? Even without any form of Scholarship or Award, sending your child to QE could save you between £3,000 and £7,000 in day fees a year, compared to elsewhere.

All of the above are perhaps the reasons why appreciably more parents have chosen QE this year than last year.

QE £30m Sports Village Elite Sports Academy Awards worth upto £7,000 Day or boarding, upto 100%. Membership costs of Elite Sports Academies for: Athletics, Basketball, Cricket, Football, Netball, Rugby, Swimming.

Rachael Neale and Jo Smith, the co-managers of BIAS Peckham, celebrate the opening of the new BIAS Harrogate store with store owner Sally Hindle

BIAS BRIDGES THE NORTH-SOUTH DIVIDE Having established a stylish boutique in Peckham four years ago, which now has a strong group of returning customers together with weekend visitors to this cool part of south east London, Sally Hindle, owner of Bias, was keen to see if a second BIAS could thrive in the north of the country. Having grown up near Durham she was keen to head nearer home and thought Harrogate was the perfect place. With its high end high street and good selection of independents it seemed just right. And Sally was sure their hand chosen range of Scandinavian and European labels would bring something new and different to the town. Tel: 01423 705608

A journey into space OPEN UP YOUR KITCHEN WITH THE ALNO STORE LEEDS. pen shelving in the kitchen is a source of great debate. On the one hand, some people see it as a stylish way to add extra storage space to your kitchen, while others believe it can make a space seem cluttered. Read our five reasons why you should open up your kitchen with open shelving.

O

3 It’s eye-catching

Try incorporating open shelving within a floating wall cabinet, offering an ultramodern storage solution, that is practical as well as stylish, and a place where you can display ornaments. Open shelves in different shapes and sizes can also be used to create an eye-catching feature wall.

1 It can break up block cabinets

Open shelving, especially in a different colour, can break up blocks of cabinets, offering something else to look at, and a place to showcase your most prized or most used kitchen accessories, as shown here in the ALNOFINE kitchen display at The ALNO Store Leeds.

4 It’s versatile

2 It’s timeless

5 It’s extra storage space

Open shelving isn’t a new trend, but it isn’t a trend that looks like it’s slowing down either. Whatever your style preference, whether it be modern or traditional kitchens, open shelving will work. Using open shelving on either end of your kitchen island provides a handy, yet decorative storage space.

You can never have enough storage space in the kitchen, and open shelving is perfect for utilising space which might otherwise go to waste.Add open shelves to the end of a tall bank of units to maximise their functionality, or to openplan designs, as a way to blend the kitchen with the living area.

82 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

With the addition of sliding doors, the appearance of your units can be changed easily and as often as you like, shifting from closed cabinets that store plates and other kitchen essentials, to open shelving that displays your favourite trinkets.

Visit The ALNO Store Leeds to discover endless design possibilities and experience ALNO kitchens in a relaxed and inspirational setting. The flagship store offers free parking and is open Monday to Friday 09.30 – 17.00, Saturday 09.30 – 16.30, and Sunday by appointment only.
