EDITOR’S MESSAGE: fter cycling fever gripped Yorkshire so spectacularly last year – when we 22 welcomed the Tour de France Yorkshire Grand Depart to our wonderful county – we were thrilled to hear that a new cycling event would become a regular fixture on the sporting calendar. And while the Tour de Yorkshire, taking place 13 May, doesn’t feature Sheffield this year, there’s 36 still plenty to get excited about when this race welcomes some of the best international riders in the world. Read all about it on page 12. One S35 woman taking on a cycling challenge of her own, Sandra Nundy, is gearing up for a bike ride from Leeds to Paris next month (page 26). She tells us how local gym Fitness Garage has helped her achieve her goals. On a gentler note, we were also invited to join the Capelle Floral Art Society’s monthly meeting in Chapeltown for an evening of beautiful flower display demonstrations inspired by worldly travels. Turn to page 22 to find out more. If you have a story to share, are hosting an event that you’d like us to publicise or have photographs of a recent celebration or event, we’d love to hear from you. Luxurious options – mothers of the bride or groom take centre stage at New Image. nce the bride has found her perfect dress, the bridesmaids are kitted out and a colour scheme has been finalised, there is one more person for whom the ideal outfit is so important – the mother of the bride or groom. “Dressing for a wedding is as individual as the person themselves,” says Lesley Taylor, owner of fabulous fashion boutique New Image. “I know that ladies can have sleepless nights in the run up to their son or daughter’s wedding and dread the thought of shopping for their outfit. We make sure everyone looks and feels their very best.” Lesley and her team have been helping ladies find their perfect outfit since 1986 and, in 2007, dedicated the upper floor to special occassionwear. With designers such as Condici, John Charles, Veni Infantino and Gina Bacconi lining the rails, you’ll discover a world of beautiful fabrics, styles and colours. Known as the crème de la crème of special occassionwear, Condici has long been the chosen brand for ladies looking for something extra special. “No matter what size or shape you are, Condici will look fantastic on you,” says Lesley. “It’s the way it’s cut and the quality of the fabric that offers the most flattering styles for everyone. And the designs are simply to die for.” New Image also stocks an exclusive bespoke lace collection by Roberto Cavaleti. Choose from a gorgeous selection of dresses, jackets, tops, skirts and trousers in a range of colours and lengths and your individualised outfit will be created just for you within four weeks. A bespoke service is also available with the stunning hats and fascinators by Darcie Mae. A fabulous finishing touch to any special occasion, the

colour, size, shape and design can be matched to your exact specifications. Matching bags and shoes complete the look in style. Though these luxurious options are available for those looking to push the boat out, a great collection of more affordable outfits is also available. For weddings abroad, more relaxed events and the races, Joseph Ribkoff and Tahari have the answers. As a mother of the bride or groom, you deserve to enjoy a wonderful experience at such a special time – and New Image excels in making this happen. Put at ease from the moment you step through the door, you’ll enjoy a personal service with individual, undivided attention in a relaxed environment. You can even leaf through a photo album, packed with photographs and thank you notes from New Image’s many happy customers. “We always ask our customers to send us a photograph of them on the special day and let us know how it went,” says Lesley. “We’ve dressed many ladies more than once over the years as they keep coming back for our special service and great selection.” To celebrate finding the perfect outfit, you can toast with a glass of wine before leaving with your garments wrapped protectively in suit covers, and bags, shoes and hats beautifully boxed. Or, if any alterations are needed, the two in-house seamstresses take care of every nip and tuck to ensure the perfect fit. For your next special occasion, make sure New Image is your number one destination. New Image 277 Middlewood Road, Hillsborough, Sheffield, S6 4HD Tel: 0114 234 4880 www.new-image.co.uk

YORKSHIRE RIDES AGAIN
Ready for the off (from left): Malcolm Elliott, Marc Etches and Brian Robinson
After the excitement of last year’s Grand Depart, cycle fever is set to strike once more as the world’s best riders head back to the region. Stephanie Burns reports. egacy was a hot topic in the run up to the Tour de France Yorkshire Grand Depart last summer. Determined not to waste a golden opportunity to promote the many benefits of God’s own county once the millions-strong crowds had dispersed, organisers began planning for life posttour well before the cyclists tore up our streets. And so it was with great enthusiasm that plans for a Tour de Yorkshire were first announced in September last year. This three-day international cycling event – run by Welcome to Yorkshire and Amaury Sport Organisation (which operates the Tour de France) and backed by British Cycling – will once again challenge the world’s best riders to tackle what is arguably some of the world’s best cycling terrain. Taking place in three stages from 1 to 3 May and designed by the Tour de France’s sports director Thierry Gouvenou, it will touch upon some Grand Depart routes as well as breaking new ground elsewhere.

Day one covers 174km and travels from Bridlington to Scarborough via Pickering, Whitby and Robin Hoods Bay. It picks up in York the next day for another 174km of riding through Malton, Wetwang and Beverley before making its way to the finish line in Selby. The third and final day – a 167km route – begins in Wakefield, drops down to Barnsley and then comes up through Holmfirth, Hebden Bridge, and Otley, finally sprinting into Leeds. Though Sheffield didn’t make the cut this time, the third stage of the tour – on Sunday 3 May – comes agonisingly close as Barnsley gets its turn in the spotlight. If you’re looking to relive the buzz of the Grand Depart, you’d be wise to take a short trip up the M1 to catch the action live here at around 12.40pm. Of course, the broadcast on national television and throughout Europe will also allow you to follow the full race as it happens so, wherever you are, you needn’t miss the opportunity to witness another showcase of our beautiful county in high-def. PULSEEDUCATION
Professional tuition in Maths & English create individual tutoring programmes, using proven Kip McGrath methods.
Maths can be easy… honest! Kip McGrath’s David Kaye explains how… t seems strange that people are prepared to make light of being unable to do something, especially when it is as fundamental to modern life as maths. The government has recently raised the bar, not only in the difficulty of GCSE exams, but also in the attainment children are expected to make at the end of each year of their school career. For some, this may help as they will strive harder. Others may feel maths is even further out of reach. Those who do not achieve an acceptable pass at GCSE will have to resit, but this will not necessarily fix the problem. Over many years of teaching in different schools I have noticed a common issue; children have struggled to learn the basics. This leads to difficulties when trying to perform more complicated maths as relatively simple mistakes are made, which leads to frustration, a sense of failure and a dislike of anything to do with maths. Years ago, primary maths teaching would have concentrated on times tables and the four number operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Children would have progressed on to performing calculations with fractions and decimals. Schools sometimes spend as little as a week on a topic in order to cover the National Curriculum requirements. In this time, many children can gain an understanding and some will even gain mastery, but many will also quickly forget. When they revisit, some of those who have forgotten will swiftly recap but a proportion will be back to square one. Schools have excellent teachers and often go out of their way to help, but they have much to cover, many pupils and only so many teachers and so much time. This is where supplementary education can help; providing specifically tailored learning, at a pace to suit each child, with sufficient time for practise and without the pressure to move onto the next area of maths before the current one is mastered. Maths can become easy with more time on each topic, smaller learning steps and opportunity to practise. Even the slowest learner can succeed with this approach.

PROMOTIONSHEFFIELD GLAZING
The answer to your misty double glazing couldn’t be clearer – call Sheffield Glazing for replacement energy-efficient glass. s the weather begins to improve, the hours of daylight extend and the flowers start to blossom, there are few greater pleasures than gazing out into the garden and looking forward to stepping outside to embrace the joys of spring. What can quickly bring this enjoyment to halt, however, are misty windows that obscure the view and make everything look a little less beautiful. But you needn’t suffer with a misty view any longer as Sheffield Glazing is on hand to replace failed units or inefficient windows and help you enjoy spring to its full extent. With more than 30 years’ experience in the industry, Sheffield Glazing’s owner Graham Warsop certainly knows his stuff when it comes to all things glazing. Having worked on both the manufacturing and installation sides of the business – and now specialising in installation – he knows this industry inside out and is proud to offer fantastic products at very reasonable prices. The Pilkington KS glass sealed units that Graham fits as standard are filled with argon gas and manufactured to BSI standard so you have the peace of mind that your new glass has been rigorously tested and is highly energy efficient. And as we all know by now, it’s not just our carbon footprint that increases with inefficient glazing products, but also our energy bills. “After a period of time, the seal between the two pieces of
A
glass in a double glazed window unit breaks down and causes a misty effect,” explains Graham. “When this happens, it means they no longer have any thermal efficiency or sound proofing and heat loss can become a big problem.” While you may think that the only solution is to fork out for a new frame as well as new glass, Graham is pleased to say that this isn’t necessary. “What I do is fit the latest energy-efficient glass into existing frames of any size. As long as there is no damage to those frames, there is no need to replace them – and this can save people a lot of money.” While frames have improved slightly over the years, they have mainly stayed the same so you can rest assured that you won’t be losing heat through old frames. Huge improvements in glazing technologies, however, are benefiting homeowners more than ever. So why wait until the glass is misty? With very competitive prices and no VAT to pay, Sheffield Glazing can offer an affordable option for new double glazing that will instantly improve the energy efficiency of your home without breaking the bank. As well as replacing the glass in windows, Graham also carries out repairs on any type of frame and any aspect of glazing, including the glass in conservatory roofs and patio door units – and he does it all to the highest standards. Give Graham at Sheffield Glazing a call to arrange your free quotation and start looking forward to a brighter view. Susan putting the finishing touches to her ‘coming home to spring time’ display
FLOWER POWER Stephanie Burns achieves a long-standing ambition with the ladies of the Capelle Floral Art Society. very now and then, I’m told about a certain group or hobby that really tickles my fancy, and I wonder why I’ve never taken the time to research the subject further. Having harboured a secret desire for floristry for many years, the Capelle Floral Art Society, which meets in Chapeltown once a month, was one such organisation. And when the group’s publicity officer Janet Hodgson contacted me to see if Pulse might be interested in featuring their humble society, well, I jumped at the chance. On the third Wednesday of each month, the group of around 40 members gathers at Newton Hall to take part in an evening of practical arrangements or, as was the case when I visited, to watch a demonstrator showcase his or her skills by creating some spectacular floral displays. It’s been almost 50 years since local ladies Jean Hattersley and Majorie Fletcher established the club and plans are already being formed for some extra special celebrations to mark the golden

anniversary next year. Affiliated to the National Association of Flower Arrangement Societies (NAFAS), it attracts members from all over the region, but they are still desperate for more. “In the last 20 years, NAFAS has lost nearly 20,000 members,” says Janet, who joined shortly after the club started and held the chairperson and treasurer roles before becoming publicity officer. “A lot of clubs are dying because people are happy to sit and watch but not be on the committee. We’re getting older and there aren’t enough young people coming up to take our place!” After promising that I’d spread the word of Capelle’s recruitment drive, I took a seat at the front of the group, ready to watch as

Upcoming events Food and Flowers Wednesday 15 April, 7.30pm An evening’s entertainment with committee members All welcome Tickets £7 Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend Wednesday 20 May, 7.30pm A demonstration by Lorena Dyer All welcome Tickets £9 regional demonstrator and NAFAS chairperson for the North East – and local member – Susan Spencer took us on a whirlwind tour of her most memorable holidays with a ‘Come Fly with Me’ themed demonstration. While telling tales of her many adventures, this straight-talking Yorkshirewoman – with her dry wit and self-deprecating humour – talked us through her creations and divulged interesting little snippets of information about each element as she went. “The thing about arranging flowers,” she laughed, “is that you’re a mine of useless information for most people.” But not for these ladies, who love nothing more than learning about exotic new plants, and discussing in detail those they know well. It’s infectious and I was soon caught up in the camaraderie. Susan began the journey in Madeira where, 20 years previously, she had been inspired by the island’s levadas – mini canals that deliver water to banana plantations, vineyards, fruit orchards and vegetable gardens and provide ample opportunity for walking routes with breathtaking scenery. “The first time I walked the levadas, the sky was as blue as this agapanthus,” Susan said, fixing it among the cat palm, mini gerbera, eucalyptus, and birds of paradise. “You think birds of paradise are wonderful,” she continued, “but people over there take them for granted. Having said that, they think English plants that we take for granted are great too, so it works both ways.”
Before we knew it, the beautiful arrangement was complete – and it wasn’t the only Madeira-inspired display Susan had prepared for us. A smaller basket of sweet potatoes, peppers and bananas, all of which are grown in the gardens of the levadas, was also revealed to appreciative coos from the audience. Next up, the New Zealand arrangement – reminiscent of a trip Susan took with her daughter-inlaw’s mum – was intricately entwined around a frame, with one side green and one side white to represent the north and south islands. After travelling (via Susan’s vivid imagination) to South Africa, which involved a trip to Cape Town and a safari with her family, and the Girona flower festival, which takes place each May and had been a holiday with her fellow Capelle friends, we arrived at the final arrangement. “This is called ‘coming home to spring time’ because it’s lovely going A taste of away but there’s nothing like coming Madeira home again,” explained Susan. The delicate spring scene she then created could easily have been plucked straight from an English garden, with tulips, daffodils, hyacinths and all manner of other perennials taking pride of place on stage. In fact, Susan can often be found in her friends’ and neighbours’ gardens, snipping from their plants for her arrangements – not that they mind, of course. And at the end of each demonstration, they even have a chance to win back what may well have been theirs in the first place when each display is raffled off. Along with the annual subs of £25, ticket sales from national demonstrations that are open to the public and fundraising activities, this is how their group is financed. General running costs, and a flower allowance of around £100 per demonstrator, plus travel, soon adds up. As the evening drew to a close, I was glad to be one (albeit very small) step further to my floristry dream. And with such a welcoming reception for all new members, it seems budding arrangers such as myself are in very good company in Chapeltown.
How to join If you’d like to enquire about joining Capelle Floral Art Society, visit Newton Hall on the third Wednesday of the month at 7.30pm to speak to the committee. Or you can attend one of the upcoming events, which are open to the public.

COMPLETE KITCHEN & BEDROOM SOLUTIONS
From a replacement worktop to a whole new kitchen or bedroom, there’s no job too small for CKB. aving traded out of 133 Middlewood Road for over six years now, the Sheffield public are becoming well aware of the high quality, bespoke service on offer at Complete Kitchens and Bedroom Solutions. Owned by Scott Webster, CKB offer a complete kitchen and bedroom service alongside the capability of anything from removing walls to building extensions. Scott said: “When you come to us you really do get everything. Building work, electrics, plastering, decoration, fitting, flooring – this is a one-stop-shop.” But just because Scott and his team can perform complete renovations, that doesn’t mean that they have to. CKB understand that not everybody can afford top to bottom renovations at this moment in time so are more than happy to work on anything from replacing a single kitchen unit upwards. “I can do eight metres of worktop and a new sink and tap for £950 or a whole kitchen or bedroom – so people can have whatever they can budget for,” said Scott. “And if you have your own electrician or plumber that you would like to use then you are more than welcome to do so. We will do as little or as much as you wish.” A feature of CKB which sets it apart from many of its competitors is that it manufactures everything on site, giving it a bespoke service. This means it can cater to any needs or desires. Scott employs a close team of dedicated workers including a registered electrician, and plumber, as well as qualified plasterer, brick layers and window fitters, who are all contracted to CKB. Gloss doors particularly in white and cream are in vogue at the current time. This gives a room a fresh appearance and Scott has seen requests for this design boom.
H
Consequently Scott is offering deals on an Astro white and cream gloss – check in at the showroom or give him a call for more deals. Scott doesn’t Mr and Mrs Owen, S21 believe in such gimmicks as Fitted March 2015 offering customers ten per cent off their total bill though. “These are often used to pull the wool over people’s eyes. I offer competitive prices from the word go.” Should you contact CKB, Scott will come out to view your home for a free appointment. The visit normally lasts for an hour depending on job size. “I don’t give quotes off-the-cuff. I am meticulous when it comes to pricing, so post-appointment I will go through everything and provide an accurate, itemised and fair quote.” Scott is the initial point of contact for customers and he not only designs his work but does the fitting too. Once Scott has committed to a job he dedicates all his time to it from inception to completion. He guarantees that he will not be working on multiple projects at one time and is even willing to turn down work to be able to do this. “My customers like to know that I will always be there and that they have my undivided attention. That is the least they deserve and will get when they come to me.” As such his customers can contact him 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Doors and worktops are guaranteed for a decade but for extra peace of mind Scott ensures that payment comes in instalments and that the full fee is not paid until the job has been completed satisfactorily. For a company that will provide your home with undivided, specialist and bespoke attention, give CKB a call today!

PROMOTIONFITNESS GARAGE
It’s never too late to take on a new challenge, as 63-year-old Fitness Garage member Sandra Nundy explains…
{{
Sandra training on the Wattbike at Fitness Garage
At the end of May, I’ll be cycling 450 miles from Leeds to Paris to raise money for Cavendish Cancer Care. “I’ve never done anything like this before and it’s thanks to Fitness Garage that I’ve got the confidence and the strength to take on the challenge. “I joined the gym last June after seeing an advert for the Wattbike, which is used by professional cyclists in their training. I had fallen off my bike while training outdoors and broken my hand so my exercise options were limited. But it must have been fate as coming to Fitness Garage has been the best thing I could have done. “Professional is an understatement – they are so serious about what they do, incredibly skilled, and absolutely everything is done properly. Everybody who walks through the door – whether they’re a complete beginner or a seasoned pro – is welcomed equally. It’s like a family and everyone is so supportive and enthusiastic about what you are doing. “I train with Jake three times a week and have learnt so much specialist information just by him explaining what is happening during each exercise. Everything is put in context so I know exactly what I’m doing. “I’ve noticed a huge difference since I started training – just today, I lifted my body weight, which is something I never thought I’d be able to do. I used to get out of breath cycling up
the slightest incline but now I have the technique and the strength to tackle hills. “When I first joined I had a short, a medium and a long term goal. My first aim was to improve my technique because I wanted to be more efficient on the bike and not strain my knees. I’ve learnt so much on the Wattbike as it provides instant feedback on your output and teaches you how to adapt your position for optimum effectiveness. “My medium-term goal was to cycle up Jawbone Hill in Oughtbridge, where I live, without stopping. I’ve now cycled up it twice and, although I did stop a couple of times, it’s given me even greater confidence that I can make it from Leeds to Paris – which is my ultimate long-term aim. “Doing the challenge just for me wouldn’t have felt right, so I decided to raise money for Cavendish Cancer Care. They helped my husband, who I sadly lost to the disease a few years ago, and they’ve helped me a lot too. I volunteer for them but I could never do as much as I wanted to – this is a great way to give something significant back. “Usually I help other people fundraise, which I really enjoy. While being in the spotlight is quite daunting, I like to think I’m inspiring others too. After all, I am proof that it doesn’t matter how old you are – you can do it.” To support Sandra and donate to this fantastic cause, visit www.justgiving.com/Sandra-Nundy. Coach Amy’s pride at England debut Barnsley College Football Academy coach – and former sports student – Amy Turner is bubbling with pride after making a winning debut for the senior England women’s football team. The 23-year-old, who is studying for a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) at University Campus Barnsley, received a late call into the England squad after former captain Casey Stoney suffered an injury – and the team then went on to win the Cyprus Cup competition. Amy, a centre back who plays for FA Women’s Super League club Notts County Ladies, appeared as a late substitute as England beat Australia at the GSP Stadium in Nicosia before her first full international start in a draw with Holland at the same venue. England went on to lift the trophy after defeating Canada in the final. Amy said: “It is a great honour to play for the senior England team although it hasn’t sunk in yet. The whole experience has given me a massive confidence boost and the drive to become a regular international.”

A Level Geography students take a trip to Malham Barnsley Sixth Form College A Level geography students took a trip to Malham in the Yorkshire Dales as part of their studies. On the three-day residential trip, the 39 students took part in a variety of activities including walking from Malham Village to Gordale Scar to see a limestone landform and waterfall and working at Cowside Beck river collecting data such as speed, width and depth. They stayed at the field studies centre next to Malham Tarn, one of the highest lakes in England. Geography teacher James Davies said: “The students thoroughly enjoyed the trip and it was a great chance for them to put into practice some of the things they have been learning in class. Field trips are a fantastic part of the A Level curriculum which help students to understand the richness of their subject.” Find out more about studying A Levels at Barnsley Sixth Form College at an open evening on Wednesday 15 April, 4-7pm. Go to www.barnsley.ac.uk/sixthform-college for details.
Hillsborough Golf Club tee off to support St Luke’s Hospice Hillsborough Golf Club has chosen St Luke’s Hospice as its charity of the year for 2015. Sheffield’s only hospice has been selected in memory of club member Henry Baker, who was a patient at St Luke’s. “Henry was a very dear friend who spent the last couple of weeks of his life at St Luke’s so it seemed like a good way to remember him and support a great cause,” said incoming golf club captain Richard Crisp. “We have numerous events throughout the year, so we’ll be using every opportunity we can to support the hospice.”

BE BEAUTIFUL It’s time to drag your house out of the winter blues and give your home some much-needed TLC. Hannah Pearson has some top tips to get you started. fter a long and chilly winter where snow fell as far as February, it’s hard to believe that spring is now just around the corner. The mornings are brighter, the days are longer and we’re starting to think about shaking off our woolly layers and getting back outside. But with this flurry of cheerful activity comes the harsh reality that we may have neglected our homes during those chilly months – which becomes apparent when we see our home in the natural sunlight. A layer of dust seems to have accumulated on every surface, the windows and roof have suffered from the lashings of rain, the garden path is overgrown with weeds – and how long has that stain been on the carpet? It looks vaguely like a mince pie. The time has come to spring clean! No one looks forward to the annual deep clean, but when the flowers start blooming you know it’s time to drag your house out of the winter blues and give your home some much-needed TLC. With a little elbow grease and a lot of love your house can be beautiful again and have that fresh spring look. Follow these simple steps for a happier home.

Check the roof With heavy rain, chilly snow and stormy winds up and down the country, your roof will have suffered a beating this winter. As spring approaches, it is essential to check that no serious damage has been done. This can be done yourself or, if the thought of climbing onto the roof leaves you feeling queasy, you can hire a professional roofer instead. If any tiles have been displaced, make sure you get them fixed now – you’ll be glad you did when the April showers arrive.
Clear drains and gutters The onslaught of rain we saw this winter will have washed fallen leaves straight into your gutters. If left untreated, clogged up drain pipes and guttering can cause flooding, so make sure you give them a thorough clearing out. Also, check for any wear and tear that might need fixing.

Check windows Winter storms can easily cause damage to your window insulation. Make sure you check for cracks and make repairs if necessary. Now is the perfect time to clean your windows too. Polish them inside and out so you can make the most of the sun when it starts shining.
Tidy up the exterior Create a fantastic first impression at the impending summer parties by sprucing up the front of your home. Remove any weeds that may have grown across your path, give your front door a good clean, change outdoor light bulbs, tighten wobbly gates or railings and add some plant pots, hanging baskets or a new welcome mat to the entrance of your home.
De-clutter After months of children and pets playing indoors, your house is probably in serious need of clearing out. It’s impossible to thoroughly clean surfaces and cupboards with a winter’s worth of clutter on top of them, so it’s time to be brutal – either find a suitable place for it, or throw it away. Make some extra money by selling unwanted items online, host a car boot sale or donate to your local charity shop.
Clean ceiling fans If you have a ceiling fan, it probably won’t have been used over the winter months. If you don’t remember to clear away the thick layer of dust that will have settled on the blades you will get an unpleasant surprise when you turn them on. Give them a good scrub to avoid circulating dust throughout your home.
Garden With the coming of spring, thoughts turn to our gardens. But if the prospect of landscaping fills you with fear, keep it simple. See your garden in a whole new light by rearranging your plants or purchasing some new garden furniture or accessories. Pressurewash your decking or patio and bring outdoor furniture out of storage for a good clean. Although we’re still a few months away, there’s no harm in giving the barbecue a good scrub before the summer party season begins.
www.regionalmagazine.co.uk
Painting and wood-staining Torrential rain can cause layers of paint to slowly fade away, so now is the time to make everything look brand new by giving your outdoor surfaces a lick of paint. Think about staining wood surfaces too. Fences, gazebos, tables, chairs – they will all benefit from a new coating ready for the summer.
Flowers Spring is all about adding a splash of colour back into our lives – and what better way to spruce up our home and garden? It may still be a little chilly, but now is the time to get planting so that your garden will be a stunning array of springtime colour. Indoor plants and vases of fresh flowers will bring the natural beauty indoors.
Go green It’s never too late to jump on the bandwagon and start making your home as eco-friendly as possible. Energy-saving features make houses cheaper to run and are a good investment financially, socially and environmentally. Look out for solar powered products, energy-saving light bulbs, home energy monitors that track your usage, eco-kettles, energysaving toasters and standby gadgets to save energy and cash.
Clean upholstery and update furnishings Fire up the vacuum and get rid of all the dust that will have accumulated on your sofas and chairs. If you gave your home a seasonal makeover at the beginning of winter, now is the time to pack away the throws and thick curtains and replace them with light furnishings and colourful accessories. Wash your pillows, duvets and curtains and get someone to help you flip your mattress.

Tony Noble and his team at Westwood Joinery & Construction have both the necessary vision and the expertise to unlock your property’s potential. ove it or hate it, Marsala will be omnipresent this year, after being named Pantone’s ‘Colour of the Year’. Rich, decadent and full-bodied, Marsala makes for an elegant statement colour when used on its own or as a stylish accent. According to the brand’s colour experts, Marsala is a “naturally robust and earthy, wine red hue that tastefully embodies the satisfying richness of a fulfilling meal, while its grounding redbrown roots emanate a sophisticated, natural earthiness”. After the success of Pantone’s previous winners – Emerald in 2013 and last year’s Radiant Orchid – you can expect Marsala to be popping up everywhere in interior design and home furnishings this year.

PROMOTIONBUMFORD HEATING LTD Managing director Neil Bumford
The ‘thank you’ cards they receive after each job is testament to the standard of service and craftmanship on offer at Bumford Heating Ltd. here are few more welcome feelings on a chilly winter day than the thought of stepping through the door of your toasty warm home. Unfortunately, this cosy little dream can be shattered in an instant if your boiler is not up to the task. Preventing failings and assisting with breakdowns if they do occur, Bumford Heating Ltd is on hand to help. Now-retired plumber Chris Bumford established the business in 1968 and today it remains a family firm. Chris’ son Neil, who joined in the mid-1990s after university, has now taken over from his father as managing director. Neil’s sister Anna replaced their mum as finance director, their brother Robin is installation manager and sister Beth is office administrator. Joined by an experienced, friendly and professional team, they offer a host of plumbing and heating services to homes and businesses throughout Sheffield and South Yorkshire. Over the years they have served hundreds of thousands of customers and, as a result, now enjoy a well-deserved reputation as a trustworthy and reliable local company. With a considerable amount of repeat business and word of mouth recommendations to friends and family members, chances are you’ll already know someone who uses and approves the Bumford service. “We receive thank you cards from almost every job we attend,” says Neil proudly. “We know how important good customer service and craftsmanship is – in addition to high quality products such as Worcester boilers, for which we are an accredited installer – so standards are, and always have been, kept very high.” In addition to all plumbing, heating and boiler work – including installation, service and repair – they also offer underfloor heating, solar hot water systems, bathrooms, electricals, lighting and drainage. Smart controls are also gaining popularity. Integrated into an existing system and controlled using your smart phone, they ensure your home is only heated when you want it to be – the ideal solution to modern, busy living. With more than 60 per cent of your energy bill being spent on heating, it pays to introduce a super efficient system that costs less than you may think to install. For peace of mind, they are proud to be Gas Safe, HETAS (solid fuel) and Oftec (oil) registered and they offer full comprehensive warranties. To make the expense of a new boiler easier to bear, finance is available. Adding further to 46 years of success as a local business,
