Bradfield Brewery Bradfield Brewery was proud to support Tony Shirtcliffe of Malin Motor Bodies in this year’s Silverstone Classic – the world’s greatest historic race festival. Tony was in attendance with his Austin A35 classic, which was also raced by celebrity Wayne Gardner as part of the three-day festival. Once again the event was a record breaker, and raised a significant amount of money for its nominated charity, Prostate Cancer UK. Landlady of the Bradfield Brewery Tap, Megan Packham, attended the event on behalf of Bradfield Brewery with Tony’s son John Shirtcliffe, and had a fantastic time, cheering Tony on over the finish line. From one method of historic transport to another, Bradfield Brewery are pleased to report that their handreared heavy horse foal is faring well in his Dray Horse training at Warwickshire Shire Horses. Decade, named after a decade of Brewing at the farm, Decade left the Brewery last year to begin his dray training.

Butlers Balti House With gleaming white walls, a selection of contemporary pictures and the subtle sound of Indian music playing in the background, Butlers Balti House creates a real sense of occasion. Balti is a traditional northern dish, originating from the north-west and northern Punjab. This is a very popular dish cooked in a cast iron pot which enhances the exotic flavours. A dish which has to be tasted to be appreciated. The food served in the balti pan is freshly cooked with aromatic spices and chillies. Traditionally it is eaten without rice or cutlery. Delicious balti bread is therefore used to scoop up the food. There are many more classic and speciality dishes to choose, including an extensive selection of vegetarian options. Butlers cater for all dietary needs including vegan, lactose intolerance and gluten intolerance. If there is something you fancy, simply ask the staff and they will be happy to accommodate you. 44-46 Broad Lane, Sheffield, S1 4BT Tel: 0114 276 8141 www.butlersbalti.com

CUBANA’S CULINARY DREAM TEAM HAS A NEW HEAD CHEF AND A NEW MENU.

W

ith over a decade as second in charge – there was no-one better to take control of one of Sheffield’s flagship

kitchens. Erkland Xhaja is celebrating his move to head of the Cubana kitchen in Leopold Square with the unveiling of his first menu. He worked passionately under the command of former head chef Fabian Cruz for over 13 years – Fabian himself had been there since the day the celebrated venue first opened on Trippet Lane, many years before its move to bigger premises. Albanian born Erkland moved to Italy as a child before settling in Sheffield as a teenager. He originally started working at Nonnas on Ecclesall Road, joining Cubana in 2002 – Erkland now heads up a team of six that includes some of the most experienced and well-respected chefs in the city in the Cubana kitchen that caters for hundreds of covers every week and is now one of the city’s

busiest independent bar/restaurants. He is joined in Cubana’s culinary team by Nicolino Dente, former owner and head chef of Ecclesall Road’s Santinos, Stuart Berry, the original head chef at Nonnas and former owner of Chesterfield Road restaurants Kitos and Swanky Franks, and Ryan Christian, former owner and head chef of Sharrowvale Road’s The Pasta Bar. Erkland’s new menu sees 12 new dishes in a menu consisting of over 50 tapas dishes. It includes his own twist on the celebrated Brazilian stew made with diced pork shoulder, chorizo, smoked bacon, black beans, red peppers, tomato purée and smoked paprika. There’s also a big emphasis on fresh fish dishes including a seafood paella served in a traditional paella pan at your table and several tapas dishes with inspiration taken from trips to the Canary Islands – home of Erkland’s partner. Cubana co-owner Adrian Bagnoli said:

@PulseRMC

“There’s no-one better qualified than Erkland to develop the Cubana menu. The new dishes the team have come up with are some of the best we’ve served and fit in perfectly with the ever-present Cubana favourites for the perfectly balanced tapas menu. I’m looking forward to seeing how popular the new dishes will be and receiving feedback from our regular customers.” Adrian also ensured a dish he tried on a recent family holiday to Mallorca also made the new menu. He said: “We visited an excellent tapas bar in Alcudia and were blown away by their Tiras de Calamares y Chorizo which consists of fresh strips of squid served with small pieces of chorizo glazed in orange and honey– just delicious. Our new menu contains our own twist on that dish.” The full menu can be viewed online at www.cubanatapasbar.co.uk

EATING OUT

Tried, tested, approved IT’S WELL KNOWN – AND FOR GOOD REASON. HANNAH SANDERS ENJOYS AN EVENING AT ONE OF THE CITY’S FIRST BALTI HOUSES. heffield has some fantastic Indian restaurants, but I hold a soft spot for the city’s first authentic balti house. With gleaming white walls, a selection of contemporary pictures and the subtle sound of Indian music playing in the background, Butler’s Balti House creates a real sense of occasion. The menu contains plenty of classic or speciality dishes to choose from including an extensive selection of vegetarian options. What I like most about Butler’s is they cater for all types of dietary needs including dairy free, vegan and gluten intolerance. If there is something you fancy simply ask the staff and they will be happy to accommodate you. The staff are perhaps the most attentive in the city, and we were greeted as if we were life-long friends. After being seated, our server brought over our drinks of house red wine (175ml £3.50) for myself, and a large coke (£3.50) for my partner. Poppadoms and pickle trays were brought over whilst we chose our dishes, with an impressive seven pickles to choose from in a range of spice levels, from sweet mango to a revitalising mint and coriander dip, all bursting with freshness.

S

Our starters of onion bhajis (£3.25), chicken samosa (£3.25) and tandoori chicken wings (£3.50) were laid in front of us – the colours were bright and the mix of tempting aromas filled the air. The samosa was packed with punches of flavour, and the pastry was light and crispy. The bhajis were deep red in colour, soft, moist and slightly sweet. However, the winner of the night for my partner was the tandoori chicken wings which were tender, crispy and had incredible depth of flavour. After a brief pause, our mains took centre stage, along with those all-important side dishes, and where to start was the question that sprung to mind. There was so much to savour: Balti saag aloo (£4.25), a delicious combination of spinach, potatoes and spices; peshwari naan (£2.95) with crispy edges and a soft centre packed full of a fruit and nut mixture, along with the pilau rice (£2.75) and garlic rice (£2.95) which complemented our curries beautifully. I opted for the Balti lemon chicken (£8.50), consisting of chicken tikka cooked in medium spices. The sauce was surprisingly light and the undertones of lemon added a freshness that brought out the slight spice of @PulseRMC

the chicken. My partner chose one of Butler’s ‘golden oldie’ dishes – the Rogan josh special (£9.50), which came with king prawns, lamb and chicken tikka. With its rustic flavours, garnished with a generous helping of fried tomatoes and onions, this medium spiced curry stole the show. I’d call Butler’s Balti House a find, but it has already established itself as one of the finest authentic curry houses in Sheffield. With its attention to detail, skilled chefs and efficient staff, if you haven’t already sampled the food I would highly recommend doing so. Library’s summer reading challenge Ecclesfield Library is calling for children to sign up to read six books as part of Animal Agents, the Summer Reading Challenge 2017. The Summer Reading Challenge asks children to borrow and read any six library books during the summer holidays, a time when children’s literacy skills traditionally dip. This year’s theme is Animal Agents, based on a detective agency staffed by all kinds of clever animals. Tony Ross, the UK’s best-selling children’s illustrator (Horrid Henry by Francesca Simon and the David Walliams books) has created this year’s exclusive artwork. To take part in Animal Agents, all children should head to their local library where they will receive a collector folder to keep a record of their reading. As they read, they they can collect stickers which will help them crack the clues and help the Animal Agents find out what’s really been going on behind the scenes. For further information, visit the library’s website at www.ecclesfieldlibrary.co.uk or their Facebook and Twitter pages.

Worthwhile investment

NO LONGER WANTING TO NEGLECT HER DIET, SARA ASQUITH TURNED TO ALEVERE THERAPY AT G&M HEALTHCARE FOR HELP. A CHANGE IN LIFESTYLE HAS PAID DIVIDENDS. y weight had steadily increased over the years because I found myself in a vicious cycle. I had tried several diets where I would lose a couple of pounds, but I always found ways to cheat and go back to old habits.” Sara Asquith was worried her demanding lifestyle would mean it was impossible for her to lose weight, however, as soon as she started the Alevere programme, she was committed to changing her life. “I travel a lot for work and it was getting difficult to choose food that was good for me. I’d forget all about the hidden calories and eat snacks on the go, followed by big meals late in the evening. “I never seemed to be able to get my weight under control and weighing in at 12st 5lb, it got to a point where I knew something had to give. “I had seen advertisements for Alevere Therapy at G&M Healthcare and decided to give it a go.” Combining high quality, flavoursome foods and state-of-theart ultrasound technology, Alevere is a personalised, GP-led treatment and diet plan, which, under strict medical supervision, can help you lose between 1-2 stone a month. It involves a series of treatments including weekly one-to-one therapy sessions, skin and connective tissue therapy and nutritional therapy, which consists of high protein meals uniquely formulated to assist rapid weight loss. Your nutritional plan is accurately

monitored throughout the programme, ensuring blood sugar levels are stable at all times, and the metabolic rate is kept high and not suppressed, which often occurs with other means of weight loss. On reaching your target, your weight is then stabilised and with the assistance of accurate measurements of your body’s metabolism, G&M guide you through long term maintenance, with personal monthly follow-up appointments. “I wouldn’t say Alevere is easy – it took will power, and it’s important to understand that your metabolic rate is an individual thing. But once you start, the staff walk you through everything, and you feel at ease straight away. “It made it easier having sachets, because my only choice was what flavour I could have, and I soon realised I could manage on a lot less food. “I took it one day at a time and seeing the fast rate of weight loss every week kept me focused.” Like everyone, Sara hit the occasional rut, but she received lots of support. “Alevere is more than a diet. There’s always a line of communication and support available and G&M helped me uncover the psychology behind my dysfunctional eating. “The thing I found most difficult was no alcohol and going on holiday was a challenge, but I spoke to my therapists Sarah and Leyanna once a week and they helped me make permanent adjustments to my lifestyle. “I did come back two pounds heavier, but @PulseRMC

once my philosophy had changed, it was easy to shift. “My husband was also really supportive and by eating healthily like me, he lost two stone – you don’t get more motivational than that.” Since starting the programme Sara has lost 2st 3lb and has continued to stabilise her weight. “When I first wore the dress in the ‘after’ photo the buttons wouldn’t close, but now I have to wear a belt because it’s too big. “I’m always somewhere between 10st 1lb and 10st 3lb, and I can’t believe how good I feel.” Though Alevere has been life-changing for Sara physically, the biggest change has been mental. “The programme changes your relationship with food. It makes you more aware of how your body works, so you can break the cycle. “I used to eat way too much, but now I plan ahead and make sure I prepare my own food to take to conferences. It’s all about finding that happy balance. “I’d definitely recommend Alevere. You do have to be in the right place mentally to commit – you can’t do it half-hearted – but it’s a completely worthwhile investment. G&M healthcare also offer cosmetic treatments. Sandie officially opened its doors last month and has already attracted fashionable ladies from both sides of Sheffield. “The new store goes by the same motto ‘fashion for women who love to be noticed’, but the outfits we stock here are less formal and can be worn for any occasion,” says Sandie. “In a nutshell, Sandie has got it covered. A PALACE FOR THE PEOPLE

The Marble Saloon

PHOEBE SEYMOUR REPORTS ON THE MULTI-MILLION POUND EFFORT TO RESTORE WENTWORTH WOODHOUSE TO ITS FORMER GLORY AND OPEN IT AS A MAJOR TOURIST ATTRACTION. t is often referred to as the “greatest historic house that nobody has ever heard of ”, but with the government’s announcement that they will be giving it a grant of £7.6 million, and a whole host of events planned, it won’t be long before Wentworth Woodhouse is on everyone’s lips. Surrounded by 250 acres of parkland, with the building alone covering three acres and spanning 600 feet long, Wentworth is twice the length of Buckingham Palace. The inside is just as breath-taking, with 365 rooms - the best probably being the magnificent Marble Saloon, which features original statues and Grecian pillars reaching up to a 40ft high ceiling. The Wentworths were present in this area of Rotherham since the 13th century, but the

I

house itself was built between 1725 and 1750. It was designed by Thomas Wentworth, the First Marquess of Rockingham, in both Palladian and Baroque styles. When Thomas’ son Charles died in 1782, it was passed down to the Fitzwilliam family and remained with them up until 1989. Over the years, the Fitzwilliam-owned property was leased to West Riding County Council for the Lady of Mabel College of Physical Education, which then became part of Sheffield City Polytechnic, before the Newbould family bought Wentworth in 1999. Shortly after the death of owner Clifford Newbould in 2015, the family put the property up for sale and the Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust, a constituted legal charity,

took on the property earlier this year. Though it is still a breathtaking sight to behold, much needs doing to restore the property to its former glory. “The level of work to get it to a suitable state could cost anything between £40 million and £80 million. It’s a neverending task,” says Julie Kenny, the chair of trustees at the Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust. “Being a registered charity allows us to go out and raise lots of funding from all sorts of different organisations, individuals, foundations

‘Everyone who sees this property falls in love with it. And this is in Rotherham! If we can put Rotherham on the map as a place to go, a place that people want to spend time in, I think it will be a catalyst for change. It’s somewhere to be proud of.’

FEATURE

and so on. Our aim is to secure the property for the nation - that’s the important thing.” Though a number of lords and ladies have graced the many rooms of this house, it’s fitting that Julie and the trust want to open it up to the general public, because it also has a long history of being a house close to the hearts of the local community. “For me, it’s the connection to the people. Recently someone in the car park shouted to me, ‘Julie! I have news about Wentworth Woodhouse! My mum and dad met at Lord Milton’s 21st birthday party,’” she recalls. “I thought, ‘wow you must be posh!’ But actually, on his birthday at the turn of the century, Lord Milton invited 10,000 people, from villagers and tenant farmers to miners, and they had the most magnificent party. “This gentleman’s mother and father met there and they became tenant farmers, so it is such a personal story for so many individuals.” It is no wonder then, that the house’s many glamorous parties are said to be the inspiration for Pemberley in Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. The house has been used to filmed series one and two of new hit show, Victoria, starring Jenna Coleman, and indeed, Julie’s descriptions of the

house conjure up romanticised scenes similar to those of Downton Abbey. “At one time, over a 1,000 people worked in this place. Can you imagine that? There are corridors under the house where the old servants used to carry hot buckets of water, unseen, to bedrooms. “There are stories about individuals who stayed in the house, who used trails of coloured rose petals on the floor so they could find their way back to their bedrooms when they went to dinner, and of course, Queen Victoria stayed in the house in the early 1900s and she had 75 rooms just for her entourage.” Julie is now working with Marcus Binney, president of Save Britain’s Heritage, the board of which includes the Duke of Devonshire, Sir Philip NaylorLeyland - a descendant of

the Fitzwilliam family – and Lady Juliet Tadgell – daughter of the eighth Earl Fitzwilliam – to make sure the future of Wentworth is just as bright. Not only is Wentworth a brilliant local visitor attraction, it is home to some exciting events and can even be hired for weddings and conferences. This October, Catherine Bailey will be giving a talk about her book, Black Diamond, which is about Wentworth and the rise and fall of the Fitzwilliam family. Other events include fundraising dinners, a Christmas fair in December and after the success of this year’s event, Wentworth Music Festival in May 2018. Whether you are interested in one of these events or simply want to take a tour, one things for sure – Wentworth Woodhouse’s charm is inescapable. “Everyone who sees this property falls in love with it,” concludes Julie. “And this is in Rotherham! If we can put Rotherham on the map as a place to go, a place that people want to spend time in, I think it will be a catalyst for change. It’s somewhere to be proud of.”

Wentworth Woodhouse runs four different types of tours with set dates and times throughout August and September. For more information about these and other upcoming events, visit www.wentworthwoodhouse.co.uk.

The Greenside fish and chip shop as it is today

Marishells today

Fish, chips and more THESE TAKE-AWAYS HAVE BEEN PART OF THE LOCAL COMMUNITY FOR MANY A YEAR. PHOEBE SEYMOUR LOOKS AT A COUPLE OF MEMORABLE ‘CHIPPIES’. ith this month being our food issue, Pulse looks back at a take-away shop that has stood the test of time in Ecclesfield, and a drapery shop-turned-fish and chip shop in Chapeltown. This photo of a chip shop (top right) on St Mary’s Lane in Ecclesfield featured in the book, An Ecclesfield Camera by J R Wrigley and was taken in the 1970s. The caption in the book says: “I had a conversation with a man who had lived in Ecclesfield as a boy. Now in his eighties, he told me there had always been a fish and chip shop on the site, as far as he could remember.” The building may have changed, but there is still a chip shop at the same site – Marishells Chippy. Having been first established as a fish and chip shop over 100 years ago, the business has only been owned by three families in that time – the Whithams, then the Jones’s, followed by Marie Slingsby in January 1980. She is still the owner today. Just a few miles away in Greenside, in the

W

lower end of Burncross Road, this photo was taken around 1900. The photo, which appeared in Ecclesfield, Chapeltown & High Green Through Time by Mel and Joan Jones, features a shop (left) owned by Edward Milns. The caption says: “The front part of the shop was a drapery business. Beyond the drapery shop was a passage that led to a side door into a grocery shop. The local children – who as usual followed the photographer, conspicuous because of all his paraphernalia – appear to be calling for reinforcements. Everyone is wearing headgear – caps for boys and boaters or woollen berets for the girls. Note the state-of-the-art perambulator on the left.” The fish and chip shop, now in place of Edward Milns’ shop, is called Ocean Blue (see up to date photo). If you have any stories relating to these businesses or have any information regarding Edward Milns, the Whitham or the Jones family, contact Pulse on the details opposite. @PulseRMC

PROMOTION

ABOVE: Competition winners Lindsey and Mckensie Lee

The feel-good factor THERE’S A BUZZ AROUND TANKERSLEY PARK GOLF CLUB AS THEY CELEBRATE COMPETITION WINS AND WELCOME A NEW CROP OF JUNIORS INTO THEIR COMMUNITY.

Triumphant Tankersley During the beautiful summer weather between 4 and 6 July, Tankersley Park Golf Club hosted the prestigious YLCGA Challenge Bowl competition with the victory going to one of our ladies, Lindsey Lee. The matchplay competition was held over three days, where Lindsey beat ladies from across the Yorkshire region. Two other ladies also made it through to the next rounds. Karen Elliott lost out in the first round, but won the lowest net score of 67, and Vicky Taylor-Davis qualified through to the semifinals, where she lost to her club-mate Lindsey. Other victories included vice-captain, Gillian Guest, and Mandy Wright winning the Greensomes and Sally Armstrong, Kim Wragg and Linda Thompson coming second in the TriAm. Overall, a fantastic result for the ladies of TPGC. The board of directors would like to thank everyone who helped before and during the event. Without their hard work, support and commitment, it wouldn’t have been such a success. 48 Pulse | www.pulsemag.co.uk

Juniors A weekly pre-junior competition was started recently by our assistant professional, Stephanie Hall, to be played on Sunday afternoons. The aim of the competition is to give the younger juniors some experience of course play, build up their skills and learn about course etiquette. The first winner was Mckensie Lee, the grandson of Lindsey Lee, the Challenge Bowl winner. What an amazing week for the Lee household – keep it in the family indeed! There is a strong sense of community at Tankersley Park Golf Club and junior members are encouraged to practice in a safe and friendly club environment by regularly attending coaching sessions and private golf lessons with Tankersley Park’s professional, Steph. During the six-week summer holidays, free taster sessions will also be available for nonmembers. And right now, the club is offering pre-juniors aged six to 11, the chance to give

the sport a go. These new golfers will have access to the practice facilities, the clubhouse and supervised play on the course for a reduced junior membership fee of £25. Older children and teenagers with more experience can get all of the same benefits, plus unsupervised access to the course. Juniors aged 11 to 15 years, whose membership is usually £71, and 16 to 18 years, whose membership is usually £139, will get a £20 reduction when they join this August. So whether you have a child who is proficient in golf and would like to lower their handicap, or a beginner with no handicap, Tankersley Park Golf Club has everything they need to develop their skills and knowledge.
