The home of quality FROM STUNNING HAND-CRAFTED KITCHENS TO BESPOKE FURNITURE, DAVID J MARTIN’S ATTENTION TO DETAIL PRODUCES BEAUTIFUL RESULTS. n these days of mass produced furniture it seems almost impossible to find beautiful bespoke, handmade pieces, whether that be for your kitchen, bedroom, study or lounge. At David J Martin customers are welcomed into the firm’s on-site workshop, to see their furniture come to life. “People often don’t believe that the workshop is here, under the showroom” said owner David Martin. “Then we bring them downstairs and they’re blown away.” There’s a team of eight, highly trained carpenters working on kitchen cabinets and islands, bedroom furniture, desks and study furniture, each one made unique to order. David himself is a carpenter by trade, training for years before completing a degree in the subject. He ensures his staff are trained to the highest standard, resulting in the finest quality products. Everything at David J Martin happens under one roof, so David himself can check the quality and finish of each product at every stage of the process. “Our attention to detail is second to none and this makes us stand out from the crowd,” said David. “We are not held to ransom by mass-produced products as we make everything from scratch – even down to making our own cutters for producing mouldings.” This means you can add to your kitchen in years to come and the company will still be able to match the designs. In the David J Martin showroom, a stunning range of kitchens is on display, but the company also produces bespoke furniture for every room in the house. For the bedroom, the company builds beautiful wardrobes, and other unique storage solutions

for difficult spaces. For the study, David’s team of carpenters can build desks and media spaces. After an initial customer consultation, when David will discuss budgets and offer expert design advice, the cabinetmakers work from plans drawn by David and create bespoke furniture, which can be sprayed to high gloss or satin finishes using durable Two Pac paint. With larger companies, you will often see doors advertised as having a ‘high-gloss finish’. This means that they are vinylwrapped and, although this does produce a shiny look, it means that you will be able to see the joins. David J Martin’s professional sprayer can apply any colour you wish in their paintspraying booth, giving a modern finish with no joins. That means water cannot seep in and cause peeling – something that can happen

with vinyl-wrapped doors. Everything is done in-house, which enables David to guarantee high quality at every stage. For those customers undertaking full refurbishment of their home, David J Martin can provide a one-stop shop for structural, plumbing and electricity work, as well as building furniture. David said: “We run a building company alongside our bespoke joinery company, so customers are not waiting for plumbers, electricians and so on. We can take care of everything and ensure that the project is completed to the highest standard.” For David it’s all about creating a high quality customer experience, whether the job be big or small. One call to David J Martin could result in a stunning new extension, complete with kitchen, plumbing and electricity – David only employs the best tradesmen. In the company’s 37 years of trading, David J Martin has built a superb reputation for customer satisfaction. The company is highly regarded for their customer and after-sales service, ensuring that every customer is a happy one and fixing any problems with their furniture, whether that be two weeks or ten years down the line. BGT winner Tokio with Kyle
The Tomlinson family
Kyle Tomlinson with judge David Walliams
A STAR IS BORN KYLE TOMLINSON TALKS ABOUT HIS RISE TO FAME ON BRITAIN’S GOT TALENT AND HIS HOPES OF MAKING IT BIG IN THE WEST END. BY PHOEBE SEYMOUR. f Britain’s Got Talent finalist, Kyle Tomlinson, had to be summarised in one sentence, it would probably be, “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try, try again.” Kyle first came to the judging panel’s attention when he auditioned for the show in 2014, at the tender age of 12. But unfortunately, the judges didn’t feel he had what it took to go through to the televised auditions. The most surprising aspect of the story though, came to light when Kyle returned for another go at this year’s auditions. Now aged 15, Kyle explained how it was David Walliams, rather than famously harsh critic Simon Cowell, who told him to go away and “get a singing teacher.” But rather than giving up, Kyle followed David’s advice and came back stronger. “Simon Cowell wasn’t in that day,” explains Kyle. “It upset me at the time, but he was right with what he said. I joined a theatre school called Take 2 [in Barnsley] and they built up my confidence and my stage presence. I’ve been doing singing lessons for three years straight now. If it wasn’t for David, I probably wouldn’t be where I am today.” Not only was David apologetic about his comments at the earlier audition, he was so
I
6 Pulse | www.pulsemag.co.uk
blown away by Kyle’s performance of Jeff Buckley’s Hallelujah that he hit the golden buzzer, something only reserved for the judge’s most favourite acts. This was just the confidence boost the teen needed to make it to the final of Britain’s Got Talent and though it was multi-instrumentalist Tokio Myers who won, Kyle is grateful to have made it this far. “I can’t even believe I got through to the final, you know? And to get the golden buzzer is amazing. Everyone on the show has been so supportive, even the crew!” And even when asked about his rivals, Kyle is every bit as complimentary. “I thought it’d be really competitive, but it was honestly like a big happy family. Everyone got along with each other. I was really close with Destiny, Leah, Matt the other golden buzzer and, of course, Tokio as well. They’re so down to earth. You can really talk to them on a personal level.” Hailing from Shiregreen and currently studying at Ecclesfield School, Kyle has had plenty of support from friends and strangers alike. The school have proudly adorned the outside of their building with banners, neighbours have put posters in their windows, whilst Facebook users have shared the poster telling people to vote for Kyle.

Kyle is now working on his GCSEs
Ready to go on screen
Kyle and mentor Gary Phillips
He’s become every bit a household name nationally too, having appeared on talk shows such as Good Morning Britain and his golden buzzer audition having had almost eight million views. This kind of recognition is a dream for the 15-year-old, who has been working hard to get noticed over the past few years, from performing at charity fundraiser festivals in Sheffield, to posting videos of himself singing on YouTube. Many would be fazed by such overnight success, especially someone so young, but when asked if being in the public eye has been hard, he replies: “Not at all! I’ve loved absolutely every minute of it!” It was his parents that first got Kyle into singing. His dad would sing in pubs in Crookes, whilst his mum could always be heard signing around the house. His passion for singing started around the age of five, but it was only when he turned nine that he decided it was something he wanted to pursue seriously. What makes the singer’s rise to stardom all the more admirable, is that he hasn’t forgotten the mentors who supported him in his earlier days. “I’ve got to give this man a shout… Gary Philips was on the pubs and clubs and to get my face around, I’d do the odd song every now and then. He helped me a lot with being confident in front of an audience, so thanks Gary!” And with such an emotionally powerful voice, it’s no surprising that Kyle’s musical influences include Alfie Boe, Susan Boyle and Adele. He even gave a moving performance of Adele’s When We Were Young for the Britain’s Got Talent semi-finals. Now the show is done and dusted, Kyle is looking forward to concentrating fully on his musical career – once he’s done his GCSEs next year, that is. “I’m going to do my GCSEs – one hundred per cent,” he confirms. “My dream is to sing in the West End. I’d love to sing every night in front of millions, have my own concert, my own tour… That’d be immense!” To keep up to date with all the latest news, like the Kyle Tomlinson Official Facebook page at @TomlinsonOff. @PulseRMC

Stocksbridge Junior students to receive badges of honour A brand new initiative for students to learn new skills has been launched at Stocksbridge Junior School. A year ago, the school redeveloped their outside area and renamed it Cedarwood, after its location on Cedar Road. What was once an unused patch of wasteland, is now a beautiful network of pathways, obstacles, play areas and a fire pit area for cooking. Dave Wright is a teacher at the school and was previously a Scout leader for fifteen years. He realised that one of the things that makes scouting so popular is the pursuit of badges. “The children really love this area and can't wait to spend their time on it at playtime or at lunch,” said David. “I have been tasked with getting the area used during curriculum time this year. To begin with, each class-teacher was encouraged to deliver a 12 Pulse | www.pulsemag.co.uk
range of lessons in the Cedarwood area. However, I wanted to create some form of reward based system to recognise their hard work which was not necessarily academic based.” After speaking with representatives from each year group, they decided to design a badge scheme for each year group. Students will spend time in classes this half term acquiring these skills to demonstrate next half term. Those who demonstrate the skills and show effort will gain a cloth badge, which they can sew onto their PE top. This has encouraged the teachers to deliver sessions outside and the children are very much driven in their quest to earn the badges, which range from a Y3 badge awarded for Outdoor Storyteller to a Y6 Outdoor Chef badge, involving safely lighting a fire on the fire pit to cook on. @PulseRMC

TIRED EYES? CLINICA AESTHETICS NOW HAVE A CLEAR SOLUTION. t Clinica Aesthetics, many of our patients have resigned themselves to heavy, hooded eyelids that make them look tired and older than they feel because of the high cost and significant risks associated with traditional eye surgery, also known as blepharoplasty. Their wait is now over – Clinica Aesthetics is delighted to introduce a cutting edge, nonsurgical solution using the revolutionary Schuco Plasma device. The results are comparable to surgery and last just as long, but with the following benefits:
A
+ #%" ") " #$ $ + # " #% $# " $ & ") "#$ $" $ $ + # "" " % ' $ So how does it work? The device generates
plasma through a targeted micro-beam, causing a process called sublimation with no effect on surrounding tissue. During the procedure, the plasma causes some heating of the skin, which may cause a burning or tingling sensation but patients should feel minimal pain given use of a local anaesthetic cream. One of the major benefits of plasma is the reduced downtime, which in the case of surgical blepharoplasty can last for a number of weeks. In contrast, the after-effects of a plasma treatment are limited to some immediate swelling of the treated area, and the formation of tiny dark spots which flake off after just a few days. Three treatments at six weekly intervals are usually required to obtain surgical-standard results.
• Wrinkle relaxing treatments • Dermal Fillers to address facial volume loss and signs of ageing • Lip enhancement • Medical Grade Skin Peels • Deep Skin Rehydration treatment • Cryotherapy – safe, effective removal of benign skin imperfections inc. skin tags, age spots, warts, verrucae etc. • Hyperhidrosis Treatment (excessive underarm perspiration) • Medical Dermal Needling • Prescription Medical Skincare to address conditions such as acne, rosacea & pigmentation
Here’s what one happy customer had to say: “I had suffered with heavy eyelids for many years but was always reluctant to undergo surgery for something which I considered to be cosmetic. When I heard about the plasma treatment offered by Sue, I couldn’t wait to try it out. The procedure was totally painless and I was able to go to work the following day – I couldn’t believe how quickly the swelling subsided. I’m thrilled with the results, even after one treatment – and I can’t wait to see the outcome after three.” As well as wrinkles and sagging eyelids, the device can also be used for intensive skin rebuilding, warts, stretch marks, fibroids and acne reduction – contact Sue to discuss your specific concerns on 07771 604604.

LET G&M HEALTHCARE WITH ALEVERE HELP YOU ON YOUR WAY TO A WHOLE NEW YOU.
The first step on your journey ometimes the hardest part of the journey is keeping motivated.” Lisa Chappell had been on a ‘diet’ for as long as she could remember, but had never successfully achieved significant weight loss - until now. “I always slipped back to my old ways, but one day I woke up and said to myself, ‘Lisa, it is now or never, this is enough’.” After hearing about G&M Healthcare with Alevere on the radio, Lisa decided that was it. She was going to reach a healthy weight and prove to herself that it could be done. “I needed results and I needed them fast. Unless I lose the weight quickly, I lose motivation instead. “Before starting Alevere I’d been on various diets, but my attitude was a bit halfhearted. I knew I needed something different, so I joined G&M Healthcare. “I had my first meeting with Dr Grace and then saw my therapist Sarah weekly for my ultrasound and skin tightening treatments with the LPG machine.” Since beginning the programme, Lisa has lost a total of 23lbs and is slowly but surely starting to feel like her old self again. “I weighed 12st at the beginning of my Alevere adventure and by the time I’d finished I reached 10st 5Ibs. “The fast rate of weight loss kept me motivated and the counselling gave me the support I needed to stay on track and help me understand more about my relationship with food. “Now, I feel amazing. I have increased my exercise and I’ve even had to buy a whole new wardrobe, as my clothes literally fell off me.” Lisa has discovered a whole new way of life, though she knows there is no magic wand to losing weight. “I had to reduce my social life for a bit, to avoid temptation – mainly with alcohol – and went two months without ‘treating’ myself to a drink, which was a great achievement. As each week passed, the days went by quicker. I

continued to lose weight and every time I would notice differences, whether it was the motivation to go back to the gym or my clothing feeling loose. “Alevere is not just about eating. It’s about how you think about your food and actually, that initial weight loss – that positive feeling that you get – can be the motivator to continue your change in behaviour.” Like everyone, Lisa has hit the occasional rut, but she says she tries to combat it by returning to the Alevere routine. “I am determined to maintain this healthier lifestyle and weight. There are times when I don’t – we all have slip-ups from time to time – and I put on a few pounds, but I always ensure I reign it in again and return to the weight I was.” Her advice to anyone looking to kick-start their weight loss journey with Alevere: “You really need to want it – it’s not easy, or cheap – and you must be prepared to change your eating habits if you wish to keep the weight off. “If you’re committed and follow the programme you will see results and I hope I can show people that anything is achievable with the right support. Curtain up on a journey through history ECCLESFIELD PRIORY PLAYERS HOPE TO MARK THE 200TH ANNIVERSARY OF THEIR HOME BY FINDING OUT MORE ABOUT ITS EARLY DAYS. ost will know it as the EPPiC (Ecclesfield Priory Players in the Community) Theatre, but Trinity Methodist Church was standing on Well Lane decades before the Ecclesfield Priory Players made it their home. In fact, on Saturday 17 June, it will be 200 years since the foundation stone was laid. To celebrate, the Priory Players will be welcoming local history buffs and enthusiasts to find out more about the building and to share any information they may have. With this day also being the anniversary of MP Jo Cox’s death and the launch of an initiative to bring communities closer called the Great Get Together, the group will be extending their coffee morning until 4pm. The Priory Players have prepared some slides for the event of the building before and after they turned it into a theatre, as well as five folders full of information about the theatre’s and group’s history for people to look through, but they still know very little about the former chapel’s early days. “There was a booklet about the first 100 years of the building, and obviously we know the years involving us, but that bit in-between is what we are trying to fill in,” says chairman and assistant caretaker Malcolm Southward. “So this event is to try to get stories for that

period. We got in touch with Christine Handley, the project coordinator for the Ecclesfield Civil Parish Archiving Project and we’ve been going to their meetings to find out more ever since.” The players bought the building in 1978. It took ten years to convert it into a theatre and their first production, The Stirrings in Sheffield on Saturday Night, was performed in 1988. Little has changed to the exterior of the building since the group took over, but the inside has changed considerably. “We did a lot of the work ourselves,” explains co-vice president Jean Dalby. “We also got a lot of help from youths doing community service. They did the plastering and painting. The person in charge was one of our members, Mr Les Bell. He got someone

to draw up the plans and worked incredibly hard to turn it into a theatre. “There was originally a balcony supported by big girders, which we took down. There used to be pews and the stage was at the other side of the room.” Thanks to generous grants from Church Burgess, the Freshgate Foundation, Ecclesfield Parish Council, Ecclesfield Welfare Charities and many more, the players refurbished the theatre again just last year. The £60,000 refurbishment included upgrading the seating, lighting and flats (scenery boards). Looking at the modernised interior, it’s an amazing feat for a building that was left derelict after its glory days as a chapel. As well as housing a chapel, the building was also once home to a school room, which was used for both events and educational purposes. Local resident, Aileen Wadsworth, recently got in touch with the theatre group to tell them she had her wedding reception in the school room before it became EPPiC Theatre. Victoria Bowden from the Ecclesfield Village Heritage Reminiscence Group is now helping the players compile stories such as these on the run up to and after 17 June, so that by the 200th anniversary of the official opening of the chapel on 1 January 2018, they will hopefully have enough information to publish a second booklet about the building. Though details of the event on 1 January are still to be confirmed, it will tie in nicely with one of the players’ traditions. “We usually have a New Year walk,” says Jean. “We then go back to a member’s house for soup and sandwiches, then come back to the theatre. But over the last few years, we haven’t managed a walk because of the weather conditions, so we just came to the theatre for soup and sandwiches. “So we’d like to do the same thing in the theatre this year, but invite anyone else who would be interested in coming along. We may even have a historical walk around Ecclesfield before coming back here. “Hopefully they’ll be plenty more photos and information on display by then and we can certainly recommend the soup. Our president is a marvellous cook! We will just need to know numbers in advance.” So if you have any information about

Telling tales
Taffy Thomas
KIP MCGRATH EDUCATION CENTRE DIRECTOR, DAVID KAYE EXPLAINS WHY HE IS LOOKING FORWARD TO WELCOMING STORYTELLING LAUREATE TAFFY THOMAS.
S
torytelling is one of the oldest forms of entertainment. It requires nothing other than a voice to tell and an ear
to listen. But not only is it entertaining, it is an important life skill too. Kip McGrath Education Centre director, David Kaye, has found that children who practice storytelling find it easier to express their ideas in writing and even adults find it improves their communication skills. This is why the centre based in Ecclesfield is welcoming the first Storytelling Laureate and MBE for storytelling, Taffy Thomas, for two workshops on Tuesday 29 August. “My aim in bringing Taffy to Ecclesfield is to provide a different and entertaining addition to our normal work, along with an opportunity for adults to take part,” says David. “This workshop, called Spinning Yarns, is in
addition to the normal Kip McGrath Active Brains Summer School which run on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9 to 31 August. It is designed to break up the summer holidays, so children start the new academic year in a better position.” A short talk on storytelling skills will be illustrated with stories from Taffy's repertoire of several hundred stories tales and elaborate lies. Taffy then facilitates an informal practical session where participants swap stories on a one-to-one basis. There will be opportunities for questions throughout. These workshops will be suitable for groups of up to 20 participants and of especial use to teachers, librarians, youth leaders, students, parents and grandparents. Refreshments will be provided and there will be an opportunity to purchase or order books and CDs. Tickets are £30. Book before Monday 3

Excellent care... Chalets are tiled, heated, clean and tidy
Peace of mind HIGH STANDARDS KEEP MORNINGSIDE CATTERY AT THE TOP OF THEIR GAME – AND IS WHY CUSTOMERS KEEP COMING BACK. ot many catteries can call themselves award-winning, but having won Best Cattery two years in a row, Morningside in Ecclesfield is one of the best in Sheffield. And it’s not just locals who continue to trust their furry friends with the business. The cattery counts customers from as far away as Barnsley amongst their regulars. Owner Dennis Hayward has a wealth of experience caring for cats having bred and shown Birman cats at prestigious shows all over the country for the past 39 years, and having opened the cattery 19 years ago. Dennis has always had a love of animals and started his career by helping out at catteries and kennels from a young age. Team member Julie has been helping at the centre for the past eight years and looks after every cat with the utmost care and attention. Customers are so impressed with Julie that they often ask for her by name. “Customers tell us that the reason they keep coming back, is because our standards are so high,” says Dennis. “Our chalets are tiled, heated, clean and tidy. We use Trigene Disinfectant, which is recommended by vets and kills up to 99.9 per cent of viruses. “We understand that your cat is just as much a member of your family as anyone else, and the fact that our customers travel from the other side of Sheffield to leave them with us speaks volumes.”
N
All prices include heating, food, litter and care, but if you have particular toys and bedding you would like to leave with the cattery to make them feel more at home, you are welcome to do so. Whether your cat has special dietary needs or has medication which needs administering, Dennis and Julie have the experience and patience to take good care of your cat. The cattery is conveniently located on Chapeltown Road within easy reach of most routes. Based at Dennis’ home, your cat will be safely housed in a chalet as part of a spacious and private garden. They are also dedicated to helping other felines in need. Last year, they raised nearly £1000 for a number of local cat rescue centres, and they are hoping to raise even more this year. Contact Dennis to see how you can help. Morningside Cattery is open all year round, including bank holidays and Christmas Day (no drop offs or collections on these days). If you are going away this summer and are looking for a cattery you can trust, contact Dennis or Julie today. Testimonial: “I’ve had to put my cat in lots of different catteries before, but none have compared to Morningside Cattery. It is run by two people with a very deep passion for cats, it’s extremely clean and the cats get fed the regular food they have at home. They get played with, entertained and are generally, very well looked after. The price is very reasonable and it’s well worth checking out.” – Sheffield Forum Pulse | www.pulsemag.co.uk 43
LOOKING BACK
THIS MONTH, LOOKING BACK LOOKS AT TWO HISTORIC HOSTELRIES WHICH HAVE SURVIVED THE PASSAGE OF TIME.
Pubs in the past hen the sun is shining, going down to your local pub for a refreshing pint is all the more tempting. And it’s good to know that some locals are so beloved throughout the years that they still exist today. Above is a photo taken on Lane End looking up towards Mount Pleasant chapel in Chapeltown around 1900, which appeared in the book Ecclesfield, Chapeltown and High Green Through Time by Mel and Joan Jones. However, The Barrel pub has never been located here. It can still be found out of shot, 50 yards to the right. This end house made a convenient, yet misleading place to advertise the pub. An old resident once told authors Mel and Joan that people would walk straight into her front room in search of a pint of Bentley’s. Meanwhile, in the other photo (right) taken from Ecclesfield, Chapeltown & High Green From Old Photographs also by Mel and Joan Jones, is the old building, which used to house The Black Bull in Ecclesfield. The pub is still on Church Street opposite St Mary’s Church, but the building here was demolished soon after this photo was taken and completely rebuilt into the one we know today. The exact date is unknown, but the photo was probably taken towards the end of the 1800s or early 1900s. The caption in the book reads: “The Black Bull is the centre of the local Christmas carolling tradition, which is now more than

two centuries old. Rehearsals begin at The Black Bull on a weekly basis every Thursday after Remembrance Day on 11 November, with a final performance at lunchtime on Christmas Day.”
If you know exactly when these photos were taken, can identify any of the people or have any other information about the history of these pubs, contact Pulse using the details below.

ave you ever wanted to give golf a go, but haven’t known where to start? Or been put off by the stereotype that it is a ‘man’s game’ or a ‘serious sport’? Many dismiss the sport because they assume it isn’t as accessible as others, but Tankersley Park Golf Club is a fantastic place to meet like-minded people, learn a new skill, keep fit – and above all – to have fun in a relaxed and friendly environment. Tankersley are inviting women and girls of all ages to sample the game with a series of six one-hour taster sessions led by assistant professional, Steph Hall. Steph started playing golf as a junior and started coaching sessions at the age of seven. Now in her twenties, she has competed in a number of major competitions and looks forward to sharing her skills with new players. “I couldn’t even hit a ball to begin with,” says Steph. “So, I started setting myself goals to motivate myself. I’ve always had support and I want to pass that on.” No previous experience of the game is necessary and all equipment will be provided, so all you have to do is turn up and enjoy your day. The aim of these sessions is simply to try your hand at hitting a golf ball. The six group sessions will take place on Thursday evenings from 6pm, with the first session taking place on 13 July. The ladies’ section at Tankersley Park Golf Club currently has 30 plus members, ranging from pre-teen juniors through to 70 years and above. The game is accessible to all abilities, whether you are a beginner or a more experienced golfer. It is also an exciting time for the junior

Adaptive Cruise Control with pedestrian detection and Automatic Emergency Braking, Driver Drowsiness Alert, and Advanced Park Assist are just some highlights. AGR-certified premium ergonomic front seats, heated steering wheel, heated front and rear seats and smart tailgate, that opens with a kick, all ensure driver and passenger comfort.
