SIXERDO YOU REMEMBER?

ere is a fascinating snapshot of some lively looking children lining up for their school photogrpah. Fashion note: bowl cuts or side partings were most definitely all the rage way back then. The photograph was taken quite a number of years ago, but can anyone recognise the North Sheffield school, or the year? Last month’s photo was taken at the junction of Middlewood Road and Dyke Hall Road in Hillsborough around 1900... from the golden days when the milkman delivered on a horse-drawn cart. Meanwhile, here is some updated information regarding the photo of Hillfoot School football team that appeared in the June issue. The man in the middle clutching the ball was Jack Fowler.

PROMOTIONSHEFFIELD KITCHEN OUTLET

You can count on quality from Sheffield Kitchen Outlet where high standards are built in to everything they do. re you a builder looking for a reliable supplier or a homeowner wanting a brand new kitchen? Sheffield Kitchen Outlet has the knowledge and expertise to provide both the materials you need and the ability to take on whole projects from concept to completion. Many customers will be familiar with the showroom in Hillsborough or their more established branch on Carlisle Street, but Sheffield Kitchen Outlet has recently expanded and moved its head office, distribution, factory and trade centre to Rawson Spring Road, just off Herries Road. Trade customers are welcome to contact or visit the new centre, while individual customers wanting a complete service can continue to visit the existing showrooms on Carlisle Street and in Hillsborough. The business prides itself on being a family-run, local company. Owner Stuart Hattersley established the business for trade customers 11 years ago, but after an amazing response from his clients, opened the first showroom for retail customers a year later. Most of Stuart’s experienced team have been with him from the beginning, including his mother Wendy, who is finance director, his brother Daniel, who is the technical director, and Lee Kirby, who has recently been promoted as their new installation director. Sheffield Kitchen Outlet employ their own installation teams and do everything in-house, from the manufacture of all their cabinets, to the fitting of high end products. The outlet’s expertise has even been recognised by Trading Standards, who have given the business the go-ahead to use the protected ‘Made in Sheffield’ trademark on all their products. Stuart feels that quality products and appliances are the key

to the firm’s. “When I started the business, I couldn’t find products that were of high enough quality,” said Stuart. “So I decided to buy the materials and manufacture them ourselves to meet German specification. This means they are of a very high standard.” In terms of kitchen brands, Stuart says: “The majority of appliances we stock are Neff, a quality German brand, which includes a range of reliable ovens and hobs.” Stuart and his team are equally committed to providing excellent customer service and value honesty above all. “We don’t do gimmicks or hard-selling,” he says. “All our quotes and order forms are itemised so the customer fully understands what they are paying for.” Going the extra mile is something that comes naturally to the Sheffield Kitchen Outlet team. “We treat every customer with the same level of service. If there are any onsite issues, they are sorted quickly with the minimum of fuss,” says Stuart.“All our products are made-to-order to fit each customer’s needs and budget.” With all their manufacturing and product expertise, combined with a strong commitment to both, trade and retail customers, it’s no wonder most of Sheffield Kitchen Outlet’s clients are gained through recommendations from friends and family. To find out more about the services Sheffield Kitchen Outlet provide, contact a member of their friendly customer service team on 0114 233 8975, or visit their showroom and trade centre in Hillsborough. Safeguarding your assets – which Trust is right for you? Trusts aren’t just for the rich and famous… Often associated with comedians, pop stars and politicians attempting to shelter their money from the tax man, Trusts sometimes get a bad name. It is a little known fact that Trusts have been used for hundreds of years – they date right back to when wealthy land owners began gifting their land to a friend or relative to look after, whilst they went to fight in the Crusades. A Trust is like a safety deposit box – you can place your valuables in it (such as your home, savings and some investments) and it will protect them from a number of threats. It can also provide flexibility over how and when they are passed on to future generations.

You need to take advice if…

Trusts to protect your home and savings Trusts are commonly used to protect assets for loved ones. The Care Act 2014 introduced new rules, but many people will still have to fund their care in later life from their savings and the value of their home. With the right advice, using a trust can protect your home and savings from the high costs of care, allowing you to pass what you’ve worked hard for to your children and grandchildren.

• You or your spouse/partner don’t yet have a Will.

Disabled beneficiary Trusts A Trust can be used to provide for a disabled child (or other beneficiary) who is either unable to manage their own affairs, or is an unsuitable recipient of a lump sum inheritance due to its impact on their means-tested benefits. Leaving an inheritance to a beneficiary in receipt of means-tested benefits can mean those benefits stop, and the inheritance you have provided acts as a replacement rather than a fund to provide some of the luxuries you want your beneficiary to enjoy. Leaving the inheritance outright to another individual with the hope they will use it to benefit your disabled child carries with it some inherent risks – most notably if that individual suffers financial or marital difficulties. Using a Trust avoids these problems.

• You don’t have both kinds of Lasting Powers of Attorney set up.

Children and Grandchildren Trusts For those who wish to provide an inheritance to their children and grandchildren, but are concerned about how that inheritance might be spent or the effect of their intended beneficiaries suffering marital or financial difficulties, a Trust is a valuable estate planning tool. Holding an inheritance until your chosen beneficiaries meet certain criteria set by you, a Trust can ensure the wealth you’ve worked hard to pass on is used in the way you intended – for house deposits or university fees perhaps. A Trust can ensure your children and grandchildren don’t inherit until they reach a certain age, or that they can only use the inheritance for certain things. What next? Using the right Trust for your personal circumstances and objectives is vital, so taking advice from a specialist is an important first step. Request free information by calling Collective Legal Solutions on 0114 288 1104.

• You have a Will but it leaves everything to your spouse/partner.

• You or your spouse/partner don’t have a pre-paid Funeral Plan. • You are divorced or widowed. • You have children. • You are concerned about what will happen and covering the costs if you need long term residential care.

Vision Windows is at the cutting edge of the double glazing market – and it’s boss Allan Ensor’s years of experience and drive for success that keeps it there. Words: Stephanie Burns

any local business owners have straightforward stories to tell. They leave school, train in their chosen industry and, having built up enough experience, either carry on the family business or set out on their own. It’s a tried and tested formula that has worked well for decades. Allan Ensor of the now well-established glazing company Vision Windows, however, has a rather more colourful background. Allan’s story begins in the South Yorkshire mining community of Barnburgh, where he followed in his family’s tradition of pit work after leaving school. The strikes soon followed Allan and, after 12 months on Ensor the picket line receiving financial support from his parents, he was made redundant in 1986. Allan had no choice but to learn a new trade. So he moved to Sheffield and obtained a heavy goods license, not knowing that what he did with that license would affect the rest of his life. “I did a humanitarian run to Rumania with a guy called Geoff Hardisty,

taking food, first aid, clothing and building materials to an orphanage there,” Allan explains. “I’d just come out of the pits and was looking for work; Geoff owned a window company and was looking for a driver. Geoff and his wife Carol gave me my first chance in windows, and I worked for them for five years, driving and helping out in the office.” When Geoff’s company closed, Allan had his second break when he began working with a trade customer, Ken Kitson. Ken taught Allan how to fit windows to a high standard and ignited a passion for window fitting that would influence the rest of Allan’s career. “I’d learnt to fit, so I got a van and got a lad. I bought in my own windows, doors and conservatories and fitted them for ten years as a sole trader. That was the beginning of Vision Windows.” It’s now 18 years since Allan opened his first Vision Windows site on Holme Lane and he still has many of the same staff. After just six years, they had outgrown the 3,500 sq ft premises and relocated to their current home on Cuthbert Bank Road – a 12,500 sq ft office and factory where all of their products are manufactured. Today, his passion for the trade is as strong as ever. “I like to be the market leader so if something new comes in – whether it’s products or legislation – I want to be there first. The industry has changed massively and it can be hard to keep up but it’s in my best interests to change with the times and I take that responsibility very seriously.” In this forever-changing world, Allan refuses to be left behind and will attend every seminar or conference that promotes new

SIXER STORIES

As Sixer celebrates its 21st anniversary, we have been looking back through the archives at some of the stories and people we have written about over the years. From fun, local features, such as the search for the tastiest pork sandwich, to more serious topics, like how local businesses bounced back after the flood of 25 June 2007, we covered it all. Read on for the highlights in Sixer’s history. July 1998 School reunions The thought of attending a school reunion sparks many emotions, but most of all, curiosity. Back in July 1998 writer Mary Hampshire explored the pros and cons of attending a school reunion and found that certain bonds remain unbroken, no matter how much time has passed.

March 1999 Interview with Sheffield Wednesday women’s team captain With the recent Women’s World Cup in the limelight, there have been many discussions around the differences in men and women’s football – particularly wages. Sixteen years ago, Chris Wilson interviewed Sheffield Wednesday women’s team captain, Steph Spence, and despite some progression – and much positivity drummed up from the World Cup – many of the same questions and frustrations still exist today.

The bikes were a huge success; enabling officers to cover more ground than they could on foot, being able to get through rushhour traffic quickly and helping PCs get fit too. The scheme proved so successful that it was tried out across eight more forces.

April 2002 Educating Holly Writer Holly Smith spent the day at Loxley Primary School, and found that grim school dinners, mad teachers and the evil children that she encountered as a child were a thing of the past. Instead Holly enjoyed a day of hymn singing, tasty food and learning sums alongside the many polite and friendly children.

visual bathrooms

Loos are now easier to clean… I’m feeling flush with success over the new generation of super loos now on display in my showroom, says Eric Law of Visual Bathrooms.

REGULAR RIM

RIMLESS STYLE

With a smart flush system making them much easier to clean than the old-fashioned variety, the latest rimless toilets look sleek and modern. So, as well as spending less time cleaning those hard-to-reach corners, your bathroom gets an instant upgrade. The latest styles in the smallest room are not just more practical, they look great too. Contemporary trends favour wall-hung toilets. I can design bathrooms with ‘concealed cisterns’ so all the pipework is hidden behind the wall, which can then be tiled so all the internal workings are neatly boxed away.

Many Loos are on display

This new technology comes in all shapes and sizes so you still get to select a style to suit the shape of the room and your own personal tastes. Square toilets are trending currently, but all shapes and sizes are available. Today’s high-tech approach to personal hygiene would no doubt amaze the trailblazer who invented the flushing loo in 1596, Sir John Harrington. This bold pioneer was clearly ahead of his time as the idea did not catch on. It was some time later that Thomas Crapper – mistakenly thought by many to have been the first – introduced ballcocks and other innovations to help popularise the idea.

Coming back up to date the very latest trend is the rimless toilet. Each flush is powered by a small box at the back of the loo, and swished round the pan. These loos are very hygienic, and easy to clean.

Outside toilets were still the norm when I was growing up in Attercliffe in the 1960s...my dad fitted an electrical extension cable so we weren’t stumbling in the dark at night.

Meanwhile by using CAD (computer-aided technology) I can show customers exactly what their bathroom will look like on the screen before it is fitted.

Working as a plumber in the 1970s a lot of my work involved removing ‘thunderboxes’ – toilets with boxed flushes high above them.

You can see virtually every kind of toilet in my showroom...call in and see us soon.

SIXER21 REASONS

21 REASONS TO VISIT S6

To celebrate Sixer’s 21st anniversary, we’ve compiled a list of 21 fantastic things to see and do in North Sheffield. ver the years, the S6 area has developed into an entertainment hub, which has become not only popular with locals, but with people from all over Sheffield. With a number of bars, restaurants, entertainment centres and services available there’s never a dull moment in and around Sixerland.

O

1 Hillsborough Barracks Situated between Langsett Road and Penistone Road, The barracks are a historical military structure, turned shopping centre dating back to 1854. Most of the property is now a Morrison’s supermarket and The Garrison Hotel, but there are also a number of smaller shops within its walls. Whether you’re doing the weekly food shop or want to gaze at the high turrets, Hillsborough Barracks are one of S6’s most impressive sights.

3 A night at the dogs The thrill and excitement of Yorkshire’s premier greyhound racing track makes it the perfect venue for a fun and affordable night out with a difference. Whatever the occasion, Owlerton Stadium has it all. There are track-side bars and food outlets, but for a more sophisticated evening, the acclaimed Panorama Restaurant has great views of the racing, superb food and a table service. Larger groups can enjoy Owlerton’s executive boxes, which boast a private bar, tote betting service and balcony to experience the rush of the track action. For more information visit www.owlertonstadium.co.uk

4 The Sportsman Inn The Sportsman on Worrall Road is a warm and friendly pub with a strong community feel. Whether you are a regular or a new customer, the staff are always welcoming and friendly. They host regular live music nights and a number of charity events throughout the year. The upcoming BBQ Family Fun Day on 30 August will help fund a vaccine for Crohn’s disease plus Help for Heroes. There has been a huge rise of children with the condition including young Uhro and by enjoying a day of craft stalls, games and raffles, including a tombola, you can help them beat the disease together.

2 Sheffield Tigers Speedway Racing at Owlerton Stadium, the only motorsport team in South Yorkshire, offers a night out for all the family to cheer on their handlebar heroes. Sheffield Window Centre Tigers are bang on course for achieving a place in Speedway’s Premier League end-ofseason play-offs. The battle-scarred Tigers have maintained their dizzying position at the top end of this fiercely-fought competition. High-speed home matches every Thursday throughout August will determine the Tigers’ destiny as they mercilessly claw their way to silverware. For more information visit www.sheffieldspeedway.co

www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

5 Sheffield Wednesday The 39,732 capacity football ground has been home to the Owls since its establishment as The Wednesday in 1867. Over the years, Sheffield Wednesday has won four League titles, three FA Cups and one League Cup and although the team was relegated from the premiership in 2000, loyal fans continue to flock to home matches. >>>

SIXER21 REASONS

10 Cadbury Trebor Bassetts Hillsborough is home to Bassett’s, a confectionery company founded by George Bassett in 1842. It is said that the company’s best-known sweets, Liquorice Allsorts, were created by accident in 1899, when a salesman tripped in a shop and spilled the contents of his samples on the floor. In 1989, the company was taken over by Cadbury’s and people all over Britain continue to enjoy the sweets today. Many locals are reminded of the long-established link to Sheffield when they drive past the giant poster of famous mascot, Bertie Bassett.

6 Napoleons Cabaret dinners, poker tournaments, prize draws and much more, there’s always plenty to keep you entertained at Napoleons. Located at Owlerton, next to the greyhound stadium, the casino is equally famed for fantastic food. Dine in style with a three-course meal or take advantage of the summer sensation offer where you can get two courses and a five pound gaming chip for £12.95. Visit www.napoleons-casinos.co.uk/sheffield-owlerton for more details.

7 Béres Locals will struggle to find a tastier sandwich than a Béres pork sandwich. Established in 1961, the family butcher’s has since expanded into nine branches including shops as close as Hillsborough and Middlewood and as far away as Woodseats. Visit www.beresporkshop.co.uk to find your nearest shop.

11 Lomas Hall

8 Walkley Library Walkley Library is a grade II listed building and is the only library in Sheffield to receive Carnegie funding, meaning it was built with money donated by Scottish-American businessman and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. A total of 2,509 Carnegie libraries were built between 1883 and 1929, one of which being the Walkley Library in 1904. In 2014, government cuts meant the library faced closure and the community fought to keep this vital service open. Since then it has become an Associate Library, run by independently by volunteers and supported by a grant. The building is home to literary events such as the Library Festival which took place in June, and various other fundraisers throughout the year. To support this important library service or to get involved, visit www.walkleylibrary.org.uk

9 The Strines Inn Despite being within Sheffield’s border, The Strines Inn could be a world away. The 13th century inn overlooks the Strines reservoir and remains a classic country pub. In the height of summer, the inn attracts hundreds of visitors on a daily basis. The glorious sunshine and stunning views perfectly complement the excellent food and drink available. The inn has gained and maintained a well-deserved reputation for good quality, traditional, English homemade food, much of which is made on the premises and cooked to order.

The hall in Stannington, named after its founder Flora Lomas, has hosted a number of events since it was established, including a recent back-to-the-fifties party to celebrate its 60th anniversary. The hall holds a range of regular classes and meetings including Tae Kwon Do on Mondays and Thursdays, Slimming World on Wednesdays and meetings for local amateur dramatics group the Stannington Players on Monday evenings to name a few.

12 Supertram Also celebrating its 21st anniversary this year is Supertram, which connects Middlewood and Malin Bridge to the far reaches of Sheffield. This form of public transport has become so iconic, music organisers were inspired to name their inner city festival Tramlines. To plan your journey, go to www.supertram.com

13 Coronation Park The park local to Oughtibridge is not only a great family park surrounded by trees and overlooking the river Don, which runs through the centre of the village, it is also the staging area for fairs such as the annual Oughtibridge Gala. It was also one of the few places that boasted a hub where you could get close to the cyclists racing through the town during Tour de France last year. Look out for new activities in the park throughout the month including an inflatable football pitch and zorb balls on 13, 20 and 27 August. To find out about other events and activities, visit www.fofcp.org

www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

041 - 043 Sixer Aug15_Layout 1 29/07/2015 11:41 Page 3

14 Hillsborough Park Not only is the park a great place to walk your dog and allow your children to play, it is also host to events all year round including charity runs and fairs. The Hillsborough Parkrun is a fun and free event organised by volunteers every Saturday, covering a 5k track. For more details visit www.parkrun.org.uk or visit www.fohp.btck.co.uk

15 Slimming World For the last 21 years, Christine Beecroft has been helping local slimmers achieve their goals. Award-winning Christine runs a gold group in Hillsborough. “Like all consultants, I joined Slimming World as a member so I really do understand the challenges – and the joys – that losing weight brings,” says Christine. “I know that, with help and support from friendly members and myself, we can really work together and do it.” Christine has recently added a new session to her schedule. The new meeting takes place at 9am each Saturday at Hillsborough Arena (next to Hillsborough Park). If you have any queries, call Christine on 0114 281 7860.

19 Hillsborough Shopping Centre With an indoor centre connecting Boots, Coop and Wilkinsons, as well as many other surrounding high street shops, unique one-off boutiques, banks, cafes and much much more, there’s no need to go into the city centre when this is all on your doorstep.

16 Wadsley Jack When Clare Higgins took over as landlady in 2008, she transformed the pub into a real welcoming home from home and the bar has become a popular hub for the local community. Wadsley Jack has a jam-packed month planned, kicking off with an Italian night on the 8 August including a five-course menu for £16.95. Singer Laura Butler will be performing as Amy Winehouse on 21 August (tickets only £3), whilst the Wadsley Feast weekend takes place on 22 and 23 August from 1pm. There will be fun for all the family with a barbecue, bouncy castle, face painting, a children’s entertainer, live music (outside weather permitting) and much more. Most importantly, the pub will be raising money for fantastic local charity, Issabelle’s Appeal. The charity grants wishes for ill and terminally ill children. During the school holidays, children eat free and there will be a bouncy castle to keep the children entertained over the August bank holiday weekend.

17 Rose & Crown With summer now in full swing, The Rose & Crown’s evening and lunchtime menus can be enjoyed both inside the restaurant and outside in the terraced area with views out to Damflask reservoir. Their menus consist of a good mix of pub classics and original twists on some classic dishes, to suit everyone. Children are catered for with their own menu and a well-equipped playground to keep them entertained. To finish the summer off properly, the pub is holding a family 80s quiz and disco on Saturday 29 August. The disco is free and the quiz is only £1 per team, with some great prizes up for grabs. There will be also be a barbecue, providing a fun night not to be missed.

18 Bradfield Brewery Watt House Farm in Bradfield is best known for its onsite brewery. It seems you don’t need to travel far before you come in contact with a refreshing pint of Farmer’s Blonde amongst others. Customers are also welcome to peruse the bottled beers at the brewery in Bradfield and gift sets are available.

SIXERCELEBRATION

‘KEY TO THE DOOR’

Celebration ABV 4.5%

“Key to the door ”

SIXER MAGAZ

INE

What better way to mark our 21st anniversary than with a commemorative beer, produced specially by Bradfield Brewery. Stephanie Burns reports on our ‘Celebration Ale’. n our September 2006 issue, we announced that the good folk at Bradfield Brewery had made us our very own beer. The introduction of Farmers Sixer was a landmark moment for the magazine and it soon became a well-respected addition to Sheffield’s beer collection. Nine years on, we’re delighted to have partnered up with the brewery once again for the launch of Celebration Ale, which has been especially brewed for our 21st birthday. The light-coloured summery ale of around 4.5% will be exclusively available in S6 pubs – including the brewery’s very own Nag’s Head – from early August. “It’s nice to be a part of Sixer’s birthday and it’s our tenth anniversary this year too so it’s a real year of celebration,” says brewery owner John Gill. “We’ve followed the magazine since the beginning and always looked forward to getting it. And we’ve been advertising the brewery in the magazine since we opened.” The Gills – made up of John, his wife Susan, their daughter Lisa and son Richard – are a dairy farming family by trade and Watt House Farm, nestled in the rolling hills of High Bradfield, has been in Susan’s family since her grandad took over the tenancy in 1944. All was well until the price of milk plummeted at the turn of the millennium and, struggling to make ends meet, they were forced to diversify. It was Richard who came up with the idea of producing their own beer and, in March 2004, work began on transforming the cow shed into a brewery. Experienced head brewer Paul Ward, who is still with them today, was employed to oversee the process and the first batch was finished on 26 April 2005. Since then the brewery has produced a whole host of awardwinning beers and now distributes to pubs and shops all over the UK. The most well decorated of them all is Farmers Brown Cow 4.2%. Most recently scooping bronze in the best bitter category of the 2015 Rotherham CAMRA Beer of Yorkshire Awards, this rich chestnut-coloured ale has a creamy head, a citrus aftertaste and a long, dry finish. Joining Farmers Brown Cow in the permanent range is Farmers Blonde 4%, Farmers Pale Ale 5% (which won gold in Rotherham’s strong bitter category), Farmers Stout 4.5%, Farmers Bitter 3.9%

I

and Yorkshire Farmer 4%. All of these, and Farmers Sixer, are also available by the bottle and mini-keg. Originally a limited edition, Farmers Sixer was officially launched at the Sheffield Beer Festival in September 2006 and proved so popular – particularly in bottles – that it’s been kept on ever since. A true Indian Pale Ale (IPA), it’s brewed strong at six per cent (see what we did there) and delivers a fruity, refreshing finish. While we’d like to say that the creation of Farmers Sixer and Celebration Ale is a unique concept for the brewery, in reality the Gills need no excuse to come up with something new and there are plenty of seasonal brews available throughout the year. If you’re expecting a more detailed description of Celebration Ale’s taste, however, we’re afraid you’ll be left wanting. “The only way to really tell if you’ll like something is to taste it,” says John. “I’m not one for tasting notes – you either like it or you don’t. What I will say is that the simpler something is, the better it sells.” True to form, Celebration Ale isn’t the only special ale the Gills have produced this summer. Blueberry, a slightly weaker version of the hugely popular Christmas ale Belgian Blue, is being brewed with sunny summer days in mind. This refreshing malty session ale of 4.4% has fruity, spicy overtones and of course the well-loved blue tint to the head. These special editions are partly possible because the brewing process is actually less arduous than you might think. “You can brew a beer on a Monday and sell it the next week,” explains John. “It takes three or four days to ferment in a conditioning tank then it’s ready to put into bottles or kegs. Beer wants selling fresh, though. It’s not like wine – it doesn’t get better the longer you leave it.” The simple yet effective approach carries throughout the company. Fresh spring water is extracted from the farm’s own borehole, which was drilled especially for the brewery’s launch in 2005. Along with carefully selected malts and traditional hops, they believe this contributes greatly to the taste. The former farmers clearly knew what they were doing when they decided to diversify away from milk towards beer – and we’re certain that, like the rest of their tasty brews, Celebration Ale will be a storming success.

PROMOTIONB-ACTIVE

Get up and get fit with the B-Active exercise group at Wisewood Community Sports Centre Words: Sue Mullins uring the summer months people often think about their well-being. A local exercise group, run by and for its members, based at Wisewood Sports Community Centre, has the facilities and people to help enhance both well-being and fitness. The Self Help Exercise Group was created eight years ago by a group of people, all of whom had been referred by their GP to Wisewood Gym for a 12-week fitness programme. When the programme was complete, many of the attendees felt they wanted to continue to exercise. They approached the Wisewood Sports Centre and asked about renting the gym and hiring a qualified fitness trainer .This was confirmed, and following a successful National Lottery bid, the self help group was formed and has run ever since. The group is inclusive and caters for people of all ages and fitness levels. Participants range from 18 to 87 years of age and the group includes a former national cross country runner and individuals rehabilitating from serious illness and injuries. Individuals can be referred by a medical practitioner or selfrefer. Everyone has a full induction to identify their needs Successes include individuals who have lost up to two

stones in weight, recovered fitness after a life-threatening road accident with very serious injuries and preparation for competing in other sports. Our trainer is a fully qualified personal trainer who also advises on nutrition and diet. He will plan a programme to suit the individual goals of each member and then follow this with coaching within the sessions. Members join for a quarter, at a cost of £30. There is a quarterly meeting so that members can have a voice in the running of the group. If you would like to know more about the B-Active group and what it can offer please contact Irene Blacker on 0114 286 3465 or Steve Willis on 07867 308167. Champs shortlisted as national champ The team at Champs is celebrating after being shortlisted as a national finalist in the Great British Pub Awards. The pub has been recognised as one of only five finalists in the Best Newcomer and Best Sports Bar categories and will go on to compete in the national awards which take place in London in September. Champs on Loxley New Road opened in February 2014 following a joint £500,000 investment with Punch Taverns, which transformed the former rundown Victorian pub into a cool and contemporary sports bar on three levels. With 31 large TV screens showing high profile sports every day from Premiership football matches to horse racing and superbikes, it’s a sports-lover’s dream. Licensee Danny Grayson said: “I could see the potential to create a high quality bar that would tap into our fascination with sports. But Champs is much more than that; it’s at the heart of our community, sponsoring local football teams and raising lots of money for local causes every year. It’s a space where families can come together and relax.”

Pram man drives in to support chari-tee day Members of Hillsborough Golf Club swapped pushing caddies for a pram, when local fundraiser John ‘The Man with the Pram’ Burkhill popped in to support their annual golf day in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. The annual Universal Office Products Golf Day took place at Hillsborough Golf Club on Worrall Road. This is the eighth year the event has been organised by the company, which sees 25 teams competing, and has raised over £35,000 for Macmillan to date. Steve Manley, director of Universal Office Products said: “The work Macmillan does is fantastic and we are proud to play our part in helping them to be there for the people of Sheffield. Everybody knows someone who has been affected by cancer and this event brings the golf club together in its support for Macmillan. “Everyone in Sheffield knows John and we are really privileged to have him come along and to help us raise even more money for Macmillan.” Over the next two years, Macmillan has committed to raising £2million in South Yorkshire to develop new cancer support services including an endof-life care project team and one-to-one support nurses for colorectal and breast cancer patients. John Burkhill said: “I think it’s fantastic that these guys get together each year to raise money for Macmillan. I’m not much good with a golf club myself so I’ll stick to pushing a pram around the streets of Sheffield.” Rob Turner, fundraising manager for Macmillan added: “We currently support three out of four people, but our goal remains to be there for every person affected by cancer. Every penny raised at the golf day is going to help someone affected by cancer in Sheffield get support from Macmillan.” To find out how you can support Macmillan in Sheffield, call Rob Turner on 07545 419725 or email rturner@macmillan.org.uk

Summer festival success The sun was shining and locals enjoyed a variety of events at the Wisewood Summer Festival last month. The event included football competitions, a mascot race, Bollywood dancing and gymnastic displays. Guests had a chance to enter the tombola draw, have their faces painted and to browse items on sale in the charity shop. The football matches, which took place on the artificial grass pitches featured The Sheffield Sixers’ and a match between the dads and the coaches. In between the matches were displays by Affinity Air Cheerleading Club and the Walking Football team for the over 55s and Yong-Gi Tae Kwondo. There was a range of stalls including Pennine Housing who provided funding for a free bouncy castle and bungee run, bric-a-brac, raffles, a treasure map, roll a ball, and second-hand books. Volunteers from the RIVA Project, which provides activities for people with disabilities, were also busy selling sandwiches, drinks and cakes. The event was organised by The Friends of Wisewood and District and was held in and outside the Wisewood Sports Centre and the RIVA building. Friends of Wisewood and District are now planning their Christmas event, which will take place on Sunday 6 December. For more information on upcoming events, visit the Friends of Wisewood and District Facebook page or contact Hannah Isherwood on 0114 233 5331 or 07778 799175.

Lomas Hall celebrates its 60th anniversary A great time was had by all at the backto-the-fifties Diamond Jubilee celebration night at Lomas Hall in Stannington. The event took place on Friday 10 July and was followed up by another event on the Sunday. Both evenings included tributes to stars from the era and a live, big band. This year marks the 60th anniversary since the hall opened after Flora Lomas (after whom the hall is named) battled tirelessly for many years to get planning permission. The hall, run by volunteer committee members, has hosted many events over the years including performances by amateur dramatics society, the Stannington Players and hosts weekly meetings for preschool group, The Miss Beverly Dance School and The Women’s Fellowship.

Slimming World consultant celebrates 15 years Local Slimming World consultant Kirsty Lockley is celebrating 15 years of helping people in the S6 area lose weight. After losing four-and-a-half stones herself, Kirsty decided to use her experiences to help others. Kirsty said: “I cannot believe how time has flown. It’s a journey we all travel together. The most rewarding part of my job is seeing people’s confidence grow as the weight drops off. It’s amazing to be a part of something that special.” To commemorate 15 years in the business, Kirsty is opening a new session at Oughtibridge Parish Centre on Thursdays at 5pm, as well as her usual 7pm meetings on the same day. She also holds meetings on Mondays at Wadsley Bridge WMC at 5pm and 7pm, and Wednesdays at Hillsborough Arena at 5.30pm and 7.30pm. For more details call Kirsty on 07917 288173. SIXERBUSINESS

STANDING THE TEST OF TIME Here’s a toast to all those companies that have achieved years of success. New Image In 1986, New Image was a small shop based at 279 Middlewood Road selling quality, fashionable ladies clothing and provided tanning rooms on the first floor. “My mother Jean was working front of house under another owner at the time, whilst I worked Fridays and Saturdays,” says current New Image owner Lesley Taylor. Their faithful female clients would look forward to the latest deliveries including labels from the fashion houses of Whimsey, Reldan, Bassini and Reflections. Customer service has and always will be at the heart of New Image. Jean would make her customers welcome with a tea, coffee or even a glass of wine to create a relaxed and enjoyable shopping experience. In February 1989, New Image was extended to 277 Middlewood Road and the new shop opened under Lesley’s ownership in September 1989. Sadly, Jean passed away and never got to see the new New Image, but Lesley remains focussed on her mother’s values of quality clothing and excellent customer service. New Image has encountered many ups and downs over the years. The Supertram works in 1991 made it difficult for customers

to access the shop, but her regular clients continued to support the business. In 2007, the whole building was renovated to make room for a luxurious upstairs area that sells exclusive special occasion and wedding wear for mothers of the bride and groom, such as hats, fascinators, shoes bags and much more. This side of the business has proved very popular with customers all over Yorkshire and Derbyshire. Their milliner is happy to help customers find a hat that suits them, whilst their in-house seamstress is on hand to make any necessary alterations for a perfect fit. “The business has experienced many changes over the years,” says Lesley. “But our dedication to sourcing quality clothing, together with a team that delivers excellent customer service, has ensured that New Image will be celebrating its 30th anniversary next year.” 277 Middlewood Road, Middlewood, Sheffield, S6 4HD Tel: 0114 234 4880 www.new-image.co.uk

Garrison Hotel As a hotel converted from a former military guardhouse and ammunition base, the Garrison Hotel in Sheffield is brimming with character. The whole site is known as Hillsborough Barracks. As a grade II listed building, it represents the only surviving example of a walled barracks in the country. With entrances on both Langsett Road and Penistone Road, the Hillsborough Barracks were considered to be amongst the finest and best arranged in the kingdom and as a military deport, were ranked amongst the largest in the country. The first barracks master appointed in 1854 was Captain Francis Minchin. The barracks were solidly built to a substantial scale, having a turret at every corner of the perimeter wall, hefty oak timbers and stone walls that are four feet thick in places. The architecture is a mixture of the Gothic and castellated style. The Garrison Hotel opened in 2001 and has become a very popular venue for hosting wedding dining parties, meetings and conferences, themed event nights and Christmas parties, as well as being a great place to grab a bite to eat for lunch. When staying at the Hotel, residents are treated to historical surroundings within an attractive courtyard and gardens.

Park View Soft Furnishings was established in 1999 by Debbie Allen and Janet Evans. Janet and Debbie have over 20 years experience in soft furnishings meaning Park View are well equipped to tackle almost any project, from a single blind, to a whole house. Park View are specialists in bespoke and made to measure curtains, roman blinds and soft furnishings. They provide a service to customers in Sheffield, as well as in Rotherham, Barnsley, throughout South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire. All of their soft furnishings are made in their own workroom here in Hillsborough, giving you the peace of mind that comes with using a trusted local service, safe in the knowledge that the people you speak to in-store will be the ones making your soft furnishings. Visit their beautiful showroom and find inspiration for your home, whether you are looking for a single blind or revamping an entire house. Their huge selection of fabrics means there is something to cater for all tastes, whether you are looking for a bold print, a smooth silk, an elegant plain or feature pattern. Janet and Debbie are always happy to help you choose fabrics, match colours and find the best solution for your soft furnishing needs. 187-191 Middlewood Road, Hillsborough, S6 4HD Tel: 0114 232 0190

SIXERSNAPSHOTS

Local fans enjoy Tour de France Cycle enthusiasts Andy Taylor, Dave Hendrick, Glen Stanton and Pete Martin had a brilliant time watching the seventh stage of Tour de France in Fougères, Brittany live last month. Andy from Hillsborough was so close to the action he was able to get a snap of himself at the finish line, as well as a great shot of stage seven winner, Mark Cavendish. The trip has become something of a tradition as this is the fourth year in a row that Andy has watched Tour de France live.

Welcome To My Office – Views from the roofs of Sheffield S6 Simon Slater of Slater’s Aerial Services has a different ‘office view’ to most of us – a rooftop vista of Sheffield. But can you guess exactly where in the S6 postcode area he was when he took these photographs? To find out, follow @SlatersAerials and @SixerRMC on Twitter – the answer will be revealed at the end of the month. Congratulations to those of you who guessed where Simon was in last month’s pictures – Anvil Close to Stannington Flats and Leawood Place to High Matlock Road.

PROMOTIONBRADFIELD VILLAGE HALL

Grace Windle is helping to bring the thrill of the St Leger to Bradfield with a not-to-bemissed experience. he colours, the Bradfield Village Hall crowds, the fizz of champagne bubbles and the roar of excitement as the leaders approach the winning post... there’s nothing quite like the excitement of a day at the races; and the St Leger Festival in Doncaster is one of the biggest events on the British sporting calendar. Now you can enjoy the thrill of the world’s oldest Classic horse race, and all the excitement of the day, from a comfortable vantage point much closer to home. Bradfield Village Hall will be the place to watch all the action unfold on Saturday 12 September. You will be able to watch all the St Leger day races live on their impressive cinema-sized screen, whilst enjoying a sophisticated day of canapés, prosecco, lunch and afternoon tea, all provided by Hazel’s Quality Catering Ltd. The event is being organised by Lynn Russell, Jim Muirhead and Grace Windle, who have also organised murder mystery nights and events for the Tour de France. “Everyone deserves to go to the races, so we are bringing something to the locals,” she said. “It’s going to be a professional and posh do with table cloths, cutlery and the works.” The canapés, including miniature Yorkshire puddings with roast beef and smoked salmon and cream cheese blinis, will be available from 11.30am and a lunch menu including Thai green curry or a more traditional beef stew and dumplings, will be served from 1pm. Gluten-free and vegetarian options are also available on request. There is also a bar and complimentary tea and coffee available throughout the day. The dress-code is smart casual, but make sure you’re donning your best suit or most stunning outfit if you want to be in with a chance of winning prizes for the Best Dressed Lady, Best Dressed Gent and Best Hat. The categories will be judged by stylish business owners in the S6 area. Those who enjoy a flutter on the horses can place their bets at the venue and there’s even live music from jazz band Omega to entertain you long into the evening. All this delicious food and race entertainment is available for the ticket price of £40.

T

ABOVE: Staff at Hazels Catering Ltd

And it’s not just all for fun’s sake. All profits made on the day go to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance (YAA) to help fund the ongoing use of the helipad at the Northern General Hospital. The Yorkshire Air Ambulance has carried more than 5,800 people in its 14-year history and has to raise £9,990 every day – that’s £3.6million a year – to keep the life-saving service going. Without any direct government funding, the only help the charity receives is through the secondment of its paramedics from the Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust. The event forms part of a fundraising campaign launched by Sheffieldbased healthcare company B. Braun Medical – celebrating 175 years in business – for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. Grace is aiming to raise £500 from the St Leger event, but if you would like to make a donation in the meantime, sign up to The 175 Challenge and email the YAA South Yorkshire Fundraiser Mark Perry on m.perry@yaa.org.uk or call 07768 175727. The St Leger event will be taking place on Saturday 12 September from 11.30am and is expected to end by 7pm. Make sure you have placed your bets and grabbed the best seats in the house in time for the first race at 2.05pm and that you’ve had your fill by the last race at 6.05pm. To find out how you can get your hands on a ticket to a fabulous celebration of all The St Leger racing action, contact Grace on 0114 285 1271, Lynn on 0114 285 1227, book online at www.bradfieldvillagehall.org.uk or purchase them from Bradfield Post Office.
