DO YOU REMEMBER?

Do you remember? here’s nothing quite like a boys’ day out... and this one has all the makings of a cracker. Dressing sharp and looking confident, this fine body of young men look ready to take on whatever the world throws at them. But who are they, where are they from and where are they headed? Many thanks to Barry Couldwell for supplying this evocative snap. Does it stir any Sixer readers’ memories? Last month’s photo was supplied by Steve Stones, who was a pupil at Malin Bridge Primary from 1975 to 1981. It was taken in 1981 and shows Mr Porter’s class from that year (1980-81).

RMC BOOKS

Telling it as it was

THERE IS MUCH TO LEARN FROM SUCCESSFUL SHEFFIELD BUSINESSMAN SIR HUGH SYKES, WHO REVEALS ALL IN A NEW BOOK FROM RMC MEDIA. he deal was, to say the least, a big one. At stake was the chance to become a world leader in the market. All that was standing in the way was one shareholder. Trouble was, the shareholder was American. And he was not about to sell to an English buyer. End of story. Not quite. Because the buyer in question was Hugh Sykes and he wasn’t about to be put off by the repeated rebuffs. Where hardnosed business talk had failed, charm succeeded. The resourceful Mr Sykes located an English stately home where the aristocratic owner would, for a fee, entertain guests to dinner and an overnight stay. So it was that the two men and their wives dined in state, enjoying impeccable service from the butler and his staff, plus a tour of the place with the Lord of the Manor himself. The American couple were bowled over by this display of English hospitality, and all resistance to the big deal melted. The tale says a lot about Sir Hugh Sykes, and he in turn says a great deal about the business world in his new book Lighting the Furnace – the story of a burning ambition (RMC Media, £16.95). In it, he recalls a business career which saw him take a small homespun business in the Derbyshire village of Bamford and build it

T

26 Sixer | www.sixermagazine.co.uk

into a serious international player which he later sold for a cool £72million. Yet this is not just another dry business biography. Sir Hugh devotes significant space to special quick-reference sections aimed at providing basic advice for those who would seek to emulate his achievements. As such, it is required reading for the would-be entrepreneur. Endorsements come in the shape of a warm reception from the likes of former Prime Minister Sir John Major, who welcomed the book with the comment “There is much to learn from him”. The Sykes name, of course, has a special resonance in Sheffield. Even those unaware of his business achievements will forever associate him with the transformation of the city’s East End in his role as Chairman of the Sheffield Development Corporation, which oversaw radical and permanent changes to the previously run-down area of the Lower Don Valley. The efforts of the SDC changed the face of the city forever. But it was not all plain sailing. A chapter dealing with the story of the regeneration has the ominous title Mutiny and Chaos. Sir Hugh does not shy away from telling it as it was, with opposition both internal and political. As such, it’s a fascinating insight into the Sheffield of the eighties and nineties. @SixerRMC

Shaping a new career DIAMOND SLIMMER IS SET TO SHARE HER SLIMMING SECRETS. hen the Sheffield floods hit ten years ago, Julie Cade of Hillsborough lost more than just her home and possessions. Forced to move out of her home, relying on takeaways and convenience foods, Julie’s weight increased and she started to lose her confidence and self-esteem. Then she walked into her local Slimming World group and transformed her life by losing four and a half stones. Having kept the weight off for almost three years, Julie is now using her success to shape a whole new career, helping other people change their lives and achieve their weight loss dreams too. Julie trained with Slimming World, the UK’s largest group-based weight loss organisation, and members at the Hillsborough Trinity group are getting ready to welcome her as their new consultant from 28 August. Julie says: “Obesity is becoming such a huge issue across the UK. When I first joined Slimming World as a member, I never dreamed that I would end up helping other people to lose weight but now I just

Leading lady SUE ROBINSON OF CLINICA AESTHETICS REVEALS THE SECRETS TO HER SUCCESS. ue Robinson is the owner of Clinica Aesthetics, a medical aesthetic clinic offering a range of injectables, peels and other non-surgical cosmetic procedures. Her aim is to make clients look and feel their best without major surgery, and one of the things she values most is the relationships she builds. Clients come to her for a free consultation, discussion about their concerns and detailed skin analysis, in order to assess the best treatment options. As a nurse independent prescriber, Sue can write and order prescriptions – this is different to many other practitioners and nurses who require patients to visit a doctor/NIP. Sue then administers the procedure, with a follow-up appointment after three weeks, to check the results and make adjustments if required. Sue retired from the NHS and set up her own practice in 2014. Initially, she focused on the most popular treatments, however, by getting to know her patients and their concerns, and accessing as much training as possible, she keeps on top of medical

Worthwhile investment

NO LONGER WANTING TO NEGLECT HER DIET, SARA ASQUITH TURNED TO ALEVERE THERAPY AT G&M HEALTHCARE FOR HELP. A CHANGE IN LIFESTYLE HAS PAID DIVIDENDS. y weight had steadily increased over the years because I found myself in a vicious cycle. I had tried several diets where I would lose a couple of pounds, but I always found ways to cheat and go back to old habits.” Sara Asquith was worried her demanding lifestyle would mean it was impossible for her to lose weight, however, as soon as she started the Alevere programme, she was committed to changing her life. “I travel a lot for work and it was getting difficult to choose food that was good for me. I’d forget all about the hidden calories and eat snacks on the go, followed by big meals late in the evening. “I never seemed to be able to get my weight under control and weighing in at 12st 5lb, it got to a point where I knew something had to give. “I had seen advertisements for Alevere Therapy at G&M Healthcare and decided to give it a go.” Combining high quality, flavoursome foods and state-of-theart ultrasound technology, Alevere is a personalised, GP-led treatment and diet plan, which, under strict medical supervision, can help you lose between 1-2 stone a month. It involves a series of treatments including weekly one-to-one therapy sessions, skin and connective tissue therapy and nutritional therapy, which consists of high protein meals uniquely formulated to assist rapid weight loss. Your nutritional plan is accurately

“ M

42 Sixer | www.sixermagazine.co.uk

monitored throughout the programme, ensuring blood sugar levels are stable at all times, and the metabolic rate is kept high and not suppressed, which often occurs with other means of weight loss. On reaching your target, your weight is then stabilised and with the assistance of accurate measurements of your body’s metabolism, G&M guide you through long term maintenance, with personal monthly follow-up appointments. “I wouldn’t say Alevere is easy – it took will power, and it’s important to understand that your metabolic rate is an individual thing. But once you start, the staff walk you through everything, and you feel at ease straight away. “It made it easier having sachets, because my only choice was what flavour I could have, and I soon realised I could manage on a lot less food. “I took it one day at a time and seeing the fast rate of weight loss every week kept me focused.” Like everyone, Sara hit the occasional rut, but she received lots of support. “Alevere is more than a diet. There’s always a line of communication and support available and G&M helped me uncover the psychology behind my dysfunctional eating. “The thing I found most difficult was no alcohol and going on holiday was a challenge, but I spoke to my therapists Sarah and Leyanna once a week and they helped me make permanent adjustments to my lifestyle. “I did come back two pounds heavier, but @SixerRMC

once my philosophy had changed, it was easy to shift. “My husband was also really supportive and by eating healthily like me, he lost two stone – you don’t get more motivational than that.” Since starting the programme Sara has lost 2st 3lb and has continued to stabilise her weight. “When I first wore the dress in the ‘after’ photo the buttons wouldn’t close, but now I have to wear a belt because it’s too big. “I’m always somewhere between 10st 1lb and 10st 3lb, and I can’t believe how good I feel.” Though Alevere has been life-changing for Sara physically, the biggest change has been mental. “The programme changes your relationship with food. It makes you more aware of how your body works, so you can break the cycle. “I used to eat way too much, but now I plan ahead and make sure I prepare my own food to take to conferences. It’s all about finding that happy balance. “I’d definitely recommend Alevere. You do have to be in the right place mentally to commit – you can’t do it half-hearted – but it’s a completely worthwhile investment. G&M healthcare also offer cosmetic treatments. SIXER HEROES

A FRIEND INDEED! STUDENT AQEEL HUSSAIN’S VOLUNTEER WORK WITH THE ELDERLY EARNS HIM HIGH PRAISE. BY RACHEL MARTIN. urrently, there are over 400 older people living in Sheffcare homes across Sheffield, and in November 2016, volunteer coordinator, Kathryn Rawling was appointed to help provide a wider range of opportunities and support for the residents of the ten care homes across the city. Volunteers help bring a sense of community into the care homes, and it is a scheme that has proved to be a successful and welcome addition - further enhancing the quality of care Sheffcare is able to provide. One of the first volunteers to join Sheffcare was Aqeel Hussain, a 17-year-old student currently studying for his A-levels at Tapton School. “Aqeel showed a great deal of maturity and commitment, which made me explore the possibility of welcoming him as one of our volunteers.” Says volunteer coordinator, Kathryn Rawling. “I needed reassurance that he would commit to an adequate length of time before I applied for a DBS on his behalf, and invited him to attend the Sheffcare volunteer training. “Part of this training is to provide greater knowledge about dementia, and it gives the volunteers an opportunity to become a Dementia Friend. “I was thrilled when Aqeel committed to volunteering for six months. He gives up two hours of his time each Saturday and visits Midhurst Residential Home in S6. “It’s lovely to see a young person giving his time in this way. Sheffcare greatly value our volunteers and would like to thank Aqeel, and all of our volunteers, for the time they give. Aqeel is hoping to pursue a career in medicine and wanted to gain knowledge and experience in a health and social care setting, as well as providing much needed support and developing his communication skills. "Volunteering with Sheffcare has allowed

C

me to communicate with so many new people and engage with different parts of my community. “Through playing games, quizzes and having one-to-one talks, I have gained an insight into how the older generation feel when living in a residential home. “This experience has not only developed my confidence, communication and interpersonal skills, but it has also improved my ability to empathise – a key skill all healthcare professionals require.” For the team leaders at Midhurst Residential Home, volunteers are an invaluable part of the care they provide. “Aqeel is like a breath of fresh air. He spends quality time with individual residents, reading The Daily Sparkle, a reminiscence newspaper which offers an ever-changing range of nostalgia topics and activities, and has formed several meaningful relationships at Midhurst.”

GIVE YOUR TIME Whether you’re looking to make a difference in your community, learn valuable skills or make new friends, Sheffcare have a number of volunteering opportunities available. Visit: www.sheffcare.co.uk and fill out the volunteer application form, or email volunteer coordinator, Kathryn Rawling at kathryn.rawling@sheffcare.co.uk or call 0114 2213205.

EATING OUT

Onto a winner! LOW ROLLER RACHEL MARTIN ENJOYS A FIRST-TIME FLUTTER AND A DELICIOUS DINNER AT NAPOLEONS. aving done little more than have a flutter on the horses and a go on the penny machines on Hunstanton pier, I admit, I’m bit of a gambling novice. So when we dined at Napoleons Owlerton, which offers packages with a gaming chip and dinner (£22 Sunday to Friday/£25 Saturday), I put my cards on the table. At last, somewhere that appreciates low rollers with a penchant for good food and the ability to look very puzzled at the blackjack table. The floor is full of suits when we walk in. It's utterly evocative of a classic Las Vegas casino: dark, timber detailing, a maze of flashing slot machines, exuberant mah jong players, and improbable numbers of cocktail waitresses, and at the far end of the building is the outdoor gaming terrace (the first outside London) and bar, which adjoins a relaxed seating area and restaurant. We opted for a table overlooking the gaming floor - it’s strangely captivating awaiting the very occasionally shrieks of joy that indicate a win - and as my partner’s usual tipple of real ale wasn’t available (to be honest, the idea of James Bond asking for half a pale is utterly wrong) he ordered a Jean Julien (£6.40) merlot, and for me, a decentsized Fairway sauvignon blanc (£5.50). Vibrant and fresh, my starter of pink grapefruit and watercress salad came

H

decorated with deep-ruby hunks of beetroot – seared and then served cold – and goat’s cheese cream. Like me, beetroot really should get out more often, and these beets - earthy and delicate - had clearly never languished the inside a jar of vinegar. Neither component too much or too sparse, it was a perfectly light starter to get the mouth-watering. Also going down a treat was my partner’s aromatic pulled lamb, an appetising combination of soft and sticky meat – the herbs adding a wonderful Eastern fragrance and a slight smokiness – served with warm Chinese pancakes, hoisin, spring onion and cucumber. After to-ing and fro-ing I settled on a main course of sweet potato, mushroom and brie wellington. Each component was cooked to perfection - the sweet potatoes tender without a trace of mushiness - and it was the balance of the rural flavours and Provençale sauce that gave this dish a brooding, bittersweet depth. Sticking to the tried and tested my partner ordered the chargrilled sirloin steak, charred asparagus, seared cherry tomatoes and béarnaise sauce. Faultlessly cooked to medium rare, the meat was lean and delicately seasoned, so succulent it almost melted in your mouth. For dessert, our waiter suggested the @SixerRMC

summer berry Eton mess with blueberry ice cream and the steamed chocolate pudding, hazelnut ice cream and chocolate custard. Both combined very distinct and assertive flavours that worked harmoniously together. These sweet touches must have worked their magic because he apologised profusely for ‘interrupting the romance’ as he approached to remove our plates. Now here’s the bit where I tell you about my first foray into a proper casino. Well, there was no James Bond closure to the evening, and I had no ace up my sleeve to stop me from losing my measly stake. But at least if I fancy a wager again, I’m now armed. If not dangerous. FOOD & DRINK

L-R: Ryan Christian, Nicolino Dente, Adrian Bagnoli, Erkland Xhaja and Stuart Berry

CUBANA’S CULINARY DREAM TEAM HAS A NEW HEAD CHEF AND A NEW MENU.

W

ith over a decade as second in charge – there was no-one better to take control of one of Sheffield’s flagship

kitchens. Erkland Xhaja is celebrating his move to head of the Cubana kitchen in Leopold Square with the unveiling of his first menu. He worked passionately under the command of former head chef Fabian Cruz for over 13 years – Fabian himself had been there since the day the celebrated venue first opened on Trippet Lane, many years before its move to bigger premises. Albanian born Erkland moved to Italy as a child before settling in Sheffield as a teenager. He originally started working at Nonnas on Ecclesall Road, joining Cubana in 2002 – Erkland now heads up a team of six that includes some of the most experienced and well-respected chefs in the city in the Cubana kitchen that caters for hundreds of covers every week and is now one of the city’s

54 Sixer | www.sixermagazine.co.uk

busiest independent bar/restaurants. He is joined in Cubana’s culinary team by Nicolino Dente, former owner and head chef of Ecclesall Road’s Santinos, Stuart Berry, the original head chef at Nonnas and former owner of Chesterfield Road restaurants Kitos and Swanky Franks, and Ryan Christian, former owner and head chef of Sharrowvale Road’s The Pasta Bar. Erkland’s new menu sees 12 new dishes in a menu consisting of over 50 tapas dishes. It includes his own twist on the celebrated Brazilian stew made with diced pork shoulder, chorizo, smoked bacon, black beans, red peppers, tomato purée and smoked paprika. There’s also a big emphasis on fresh fish dishes including a seafood paella served in a traditional paella pan at your table and several tapas dishes with inspiration taken from trips to the Canary Islands – home of Erkland’s partner. Cubana co-owner Adrian Bagnoli said:

@SixerRMC

“There’s no-one better qualified than Erkland to develop the Cubana menu. The new dishes the team have come up with are some of the best we’ve served and fit in perfectly with the ever-present Cubana favourites for the perfectly balanced tapas menu. I’m looking forward to seeing how popular the new dishes will be and receiving feedback from our regular customers.” Adrian also ensured a dish he tried on a recent family holiday to Mallorca also made the new menu. He said: “We visited an excellent tapas bar in Alcudia and were blown away by their Tiras de Calamares y Chorizo which consists of fresh strips of squid served with small pieces of chorizo glazed in orange and honey– just delicious. Our new menu contains our own twist on that dish.” The full menu can be viewed online at www.cubanatapasbar.co.uk

EDUCATION

Facing the future UNSURE OF WHAT LIES AHEAD? WE LOOK AT THE EDUCATION OPTIONS AVAILABLE TO STUDENTS APPROACHING THEIR GCSE EXAMS AND BEYOND. t every stage of your child’s education, they come to a crossroads. Perhaps your child is about to decide which subjects to continue to study or is awaiting exam results, which will determine what they do next. However old they are, having as much information and sound advice as possible is vital when coming to a decision. If your child is in need of some guidance and you are unsure of how to help, here are some things for them to consider at each stage.

A

AGES 14-16

The main difference between GCSEs (General Certificate of Secondary Education) and BTECs (Business and Technology Education Council) is that BTECs are usually awarded for more vocational subjects such as P.E. (physical education), hair and beauty and children’s care. BTECs are usually taken by students aged 16 and above, but some schools offer BTECs alongside GCSEs. If your child is weighing up whether to choose a BTEC, it may be worth noting that they involve more coursework and less exams than GCSEs. So if your child

60 Sixer | www.sixermagazine.co.uk

hates exams, they may find a BTEC easier. One BTEC is equivalent to one GCSE, so don’t worry which will be considered more ‘valuable’ when it comes to the next stage of their education.

staying on to investigate those subjects for their A Levels. And if they don’t like the idea of going to the sixth form connected to their secondary school, now is a good time to start afresh.

AGES 16-18

AGES 18+

As mentioned above, your child can opt for BTECs at this stage in their education, or they can take academic-based A Levels or a work-based qualification such as an RQF (Regulated Qualifications Framework, formerly NVQs). A Levels can be taken at sixth form or college, whilst BTECs and RQFs are more commonly taught at college, so it is completely up to them which learning environment they prefer. Whilst your child may like the idea of going to the sixth form connected to their school, they should choose a route that will best benefit their career. If they know what career they want to pursue at this stage, a BTEC or RQF is a good option. However, if they are unsure about their career goals, but know they enjoy certain academic subjects, it’s worth them

At this stage, your child will probably be more certain about what direction they are going in. Some may know they want to go to university, but just need a year out to travel or get some work experience under their belt. However, others may feel university isn’t for them and there are a few options for them to consider when it comes to the world of work. From apprenticeships and careers to gap year opportunities, www.notgoingtouni.co.uk is a handy website to explore. If they need extra advice, www.prospects.ac.uk offers application and interview tips and tells you more about different industries. Perhaps there are areas of work they haven’t considered yet. Unpaid work placements can also provide a foot in the door, whilst internships are usually fixed term paid positions that can lead to permanent, long term work.

@SixerRMC

EDUCATION

Fear of the unknown LIZ THEAKER IS A YEAR 10 STUDENT AT ECCLESFIELD SECONDARY SCHOOL. ABOUT TO GO INTO HER FINAL YEAR, SHE EXPLAINS WHY SHE IS FEELING APPREHENSIVE ABOUT THE CHANGES TO THE WAY GCSES ARE ASSESSED AND GRADED… very school year is greeted with nerves and excitement about what lies ahead. However, going into Year 11, I am greeted with something new, something that I wouldn’t expect at the start of a school year. Fear. This seems like the only word to describe my feelings about the year ahead. Year 11 brings a huge expectation from all directions; my school year will be the first set of students to take the brand new GCSEs and that is frightening. When we do mock exams at school, we are uncertain whether our exams will actually be like this or something totally different. We are also unsure about what is expected of us as we have no grade boundaries yet so we cannot be officially told if we will be getting a 9 or 3 and this uncertainty means that we are left stranded as to how much harder we need to try. This uncertainty adds a whole new level of pressure to the mix. Once the Year 11s have left school it’s the Year 10s who remain to deal with the pressure; you’ll have teachers at you, saying things like “one year left till your exams now” and “you better get your heads down and revise”. But is this the kind of thing we want to be hearing?

E

Do we want to be given that extra pressure and fear of the year to come? In the last few weeks of school before the summer break, we are having more exams to find out whether we need extra support or tutoring. This almost constant scrutiny adds to the build-up of pressure we are placed under, as I don’t feel we are getting a breather from tests, and many pupils up and down the country would agree. I feel like a lot of the nerves and fear come from the idea that my school life is coming to an end, to be followed by a new and hopefully less stressful part of my life. I hope that future Y11s won’t have the same amount of nerves and fear as me and my fellow pupils when it comes to our GCSE exams, as slowly and gradually the courses and exams should become clearer and clearer for school pupils in the future. However, future Year 11s be warned… if the GCSEs can change now, then it can happen again at any time, so try not to get too comfortable with these new exams. All I would say is when it comes to your GCSEs, prepare for anything and brace yourself for a bumpy ride in the future, because they aren’t easy. But if you do get your head down and work hard then you will pull through with some great results. @SixerRMC

John Brokenshire exhibits at Cupola Sheffield-based aritist, John Brokenshire, will be exhibiting his work from 29 July to 26 August and will be giving a free talk entitled My Camino, about his new collection of work on Saturday 19 August at 2pm at the Cupola Gallery. John completed the famous Camino de Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage. There are many routes, but John walked around 500 miles. This exhibition is inspired and informed by that experience. John will be occupying both the long gallery and the main gallery with oil on canvas paintings in a range of sizes, plus sketches, drawings, photographs and notes made during his long journeys. John’s signature abstract paintings featuring veils of blue, green and purple washes over a dark or black ground are clearly in evidence, but the Camino experience has informed both his palette, application of paint and his use of recognisable figuration. John rarely delivers talks but has agreed to give a short talk about his remarkable journey which has profoundly affected his life and art practice. Booking is advised, due to a limited number of seated places, but is not required. For more details call Cupola on 0114 285 2665 or email karen@cupolagallery.com. 72 Sixer | www.sixermagazine.co.uk

Iconic fashion brand Hobbs to arrive at Sandersons

THE END FOR STANNINGTON CARNIVAL?

The Real Junk Food Project Sheffield launch new cafe

The contemporary women’s fashion retailer Hobbs is the latest company to join the line up at Sandersons Department Store at Fox Valley, north Sheffield. Representatives from the iconic British brand fell in love with the unique boutique store when they visited last year and will launch their new concession showcasing the Hobbs autumn/winter range this August. Hobbs was founded in 1981 and prides itself on its classic range of understated British style with high quality occasion wear, work wear and stylish casual wear using classic designs and luxury material. The new Hobbs concession will be located on the first floor ladies wear department at Sandersons alongside Phase Eight. The news comes as the store prepares to celebrate its first birthday on 1 September. Store manager Lisa Fox said: “Hobbs is a fantastic British brand and we are really excited that the company has chosen Sandersons for its latest concession. Hobbs is one of the Duchess of Cambridge’s favourite fashion brands and we’re sure our shoppers are going to love their classic style too.” Hobbs is currently recruiting sales assistants at the Sandersons concession. SCOFF, the organising committee of Stannington Carnival, is to be disbanded after their AGM meeting in October. Over half of the committee are to resign after many years of faithful service, mainly for personal reasons. After 26 years the carnival, revived by Jackie Baines in the early 1990s, will be no more unless a group of likeminded people are willing to take on the organisation and running of the 2018 Carnival. The present committee members are willing to share their experiences and expertise with the new committee. You would not have to re-invent the wheel, or in this case, the Stannington Carnival. SCOFF will still be distributing the profits made from this year’s Stannington Carnival to local voluntary organisations and if they do disband, all money in the organisation’s account will also be distributed. If you are interested in creating a new committee for this much-loved festival, contact Carol Walker on 0114 327 7281.

The Real Junk Food Project Sheffield are excited to launch Citrus, their third pay-as-youfeel cafe. The cafe will be situated in the wonderful Zest Centre, Upperthorpe, which is a fantastic hub for the community. Citrus will offer a variety of healthy lunches, snacks, smoothies, juices and coffees all available on a pay-as-you-feel basis. The cafe will be staffed by chefs from TRJFP Sheffield and assisted by volunteers from the area who will all have the opportunity to gain qualifications leading to paid work. The food used will have been intercepted by TRJFP Sheffield, who since 2015, have saved hundreds of tons of perfectly edible food from becoming landfill and made it available to the people of Sheffield. Jo Hercberg, founder and director for TRJFP Sheffield, said: “We are over the moon to be able to open a new pay-as-you-feel cafe in an exciting venue and bring the concept to Upperthorpe. Over the summer we will be opening for lunches with a view to extend once we hit September.” If you would like to get involved in running the new café, you can sign up to volunteer at www.realjunkfoodsheffield.com/get-involvedthe-real-junk-food-project-sheffield or call in for a chat. Open season

The spectacular scenery of Royal Portrush Golf Course

NORTHERN IRELAND REMAINS LARGELY UNDISCOVERED FOR HOLIDAY GOLFERS – BUT THAT’S ALL ABOUT TO CHANGE, WRITES JOHN MURPHY. olf clubs all over the world have something in common when it comes to parking arrangements. It’s not surprising nor illogical: officials of the club, whether they be board members, captains or presidents have allocated parking bays in the club car park. Normally small plaques in the club’s livery reserve the parking space with the words: “Secretary”, “Captain” clearly displayed. In 2012 I had the pleasure and privilege to visit Royal Portrush Golf Club in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. As our car turned into the car park we saw the various reserved bays. At the end, near the clubhouse there was one highly unusual and remarkably different reserved space: the plaque merely stated: “Open Champion.” Remember, Royal Portrush is the home to one of Northern Ireland’s heroes: the genial Darren Clarke, former Ryder Cup Captain, and this was the year after he had conquered the elements at Royal St. George’s to claim the Claret Jug. The plaque said a lot about the club, its membership and the people we met in the province. Classy, understated but possessing of a fierce pride in what their sons and daughters have achieved on the world stage. In fact Northern Ireland has a wealth of riches in the golfing department: Darren Clarke, Rory Mcllory and Graeme McDowell bestride the game like the legendary giants

G

76 Sixer | www.sixermagazine.co.uk

who in folklore built the nearby Giants Causeway. So how is it that the origins of these greats are concentrated in such a small area? The answer may be obvious: their golfing education was forged in this hotbed of golfing tradition and heritage where some of the world’s best courses are shoe-horned on to a rugged and breathtakingly beautiful peninsular. The elements take no prisoners in this part of the world and Darren Clarke’s victory in 2011 will always be remembered for his ability to play crunching long irons into a ferocious wind that was the hallmark of the Open that year. A skill no doubt honed at his home club and at the nearby links courses of Portstewart, Castlerock and Ballycastle. It’s no wonder that the “Welcome to Portrush” sign proclaims that it is the “Major Golf Capital of the World “ – a wonderfully Irish play on words as the sign lists its two Open winners (Fred Daly 1947 and Darren Clarke) and its US Open winner Graeme McDowell (2010). This part of the world is now very much in the golfing focus with Portstewart having staged the Irish Open this year, won by the Spaniard Jon Rahm, and the Open coming to Royal Portrush in 2019. The decision to choose Portrush was highly significant, the club being the only one outside England and Scotland selected to host the famous event, and it last did so nearly 70 years ago in 1951. @SixerRMC

Royal Portrush is a test for any golfer

Portstewart Golf Course

I was lucky enough to be able to return to Portrush earlier this year as part of a visit by journalists to assess progress towards the Open in two years’ time. The Open Champion plaque may have gone but the glorious scenery and majesty of Portrush were still gleaming in the watery sun. A vast expanse of green beyond and around the clubhouse awaits the visitor, not dissimilar to the initial view of St Andrews. A concrete starting hut frames the first tee and in the stillness of an early Irish morning it’s difficult to imagine the cacophony that will greet the world’s finest stroke-makers in two years’ time. The course is hailed by many (including this humble hacker) as the best they have played on. Every hole is memorable and the scenery simply stunning. It would be a pleasure to just walk the course without touching a club. The views across thundering seas and sheer cliffs are mesmerising. The Championship Dunluce Course, originally designed by the same Harry Colt responsible for the Hallamshire course in Sheffield, is undergoing major changes in advance of the Open, most notably the moving of two holes from the Valley Course to make new seventh and eighth holes and the removal of existing holes 17 and 18. An underground tunnel is also being built to manage player and spectator traffic around the course. Despite the ongoing course work, our round was as enjoyable as the one five years ago. The hole that lingers longest in the memory is the fifth, White Rocks, with its green perched on the edge of cliffs with a sheer drop to the beach below. Long hitters can take on driving the green on this dog-leg downhill par 4, despite being just over 400

yards long, by angling a shot right of the fairway, between a menacing sand dune and a ravine of brambles and weeds. My crowd, with the exception of our one-handicapper maestro, were tempted until raw fear on top of the gusty tee gripped us and intimidated us into yellow-livered shots. The sense of intimidation merely increases when you’re on the next tee. An uphill par 3 of 191 yards off the Championship tees, with a ravine cutting in from the right and normally into the wind. The driver’s ball flight and length resembled a nine iron’s. It’s no wonder that they’re making absolutely no changes to this monstrous hole for the Open. Just down the round from Portrush is the impressive Portstewart club, comprising the Strand and the Riverside Courses. The Strand has all the traits of a true Irish links with mounded fairways set tight into the dunes and lightning fast, undulating greens framed by that stunning scenery of grass, sea and sky. Ironically and with no diminishing of the rest of the course, the first hole is the standout one. Widely acknowledged as the finest opening hole in Ireland, perhaps Europe, you are challenged to drive from an elevated tee down between two dunes that frame a narrow fairway which sweeps away to a duneprotected green on the right. In my experience golfers rarely consider Northern Ireland as a destination. These two courses plus other notable ones, such as Ballyliffin, just over the border in Donegal prove what a mistake that is. Try and play them before they become even more well known in two years’ time, when just maybe a sprinkling of Irish magic will mean a car park space being reserved once again for one of the Province’s famous sons. @SixerRMC

Congratulations to those of you who guessed where Simon was in last month’s pictures – Oldfield Avenue, Stannington. 78 Sixer | www.sixermagazine.co.uk

MOTORING

A THING OF BEAUTY Good news for all you Audi R8 Spyder fans, the Spyder is now available with the astronomically ballistic upgraded 602hp V10 from the R8 Plus Coupe. Named the R8 Spyder V10 Plus, the extra horses and the 25kg reduced weight propel the car from rest in 3.3 seconds – 0.3 seconds quicker than the model below – and sends it all the way to a top speed of 203mph, 6mph

faster than the ‘normal’ 540hp Spyder model. The electronic folding roof can raise or lower in 20 seconds at speeds up to 31mph if required. You’ll want to lower the roof as often as possible though as the noise this naturally aspirated 5.2-litre V10 makes is something truly special. Available to order now. Priced from £147,470.

SPEED AND SPACE DOMINATE THIS MONTH’S ROUND-UP. BY JORDAN CUTFORTH.

Bigger and better After the release of the much anticipated Insignia hatch we now have this, the Sports Tourer. The Sports Tourer is on sale now priced from £18,685. It’s based on a completely new vehicle architecture, and its revised proportions result in more luggage capacity that has increased to 1,665 litres, 135 litres, more than the outgoing model. The length of the boot has grown by 97mm to 2005mm and 40/20/40 foldable seats are standard across the range. Based on the 2013 Monza Concept, the Insignia Sports Tourer holds a very sophisticated and good-looking design. It’s 200kg lighter than the previous model, comes with an all-wheel-drive system with torque vectoring and a new eight-speed automatic transmission. Engines range from 108-256hp including an all-new 1.5-litre turbo petrol unit.

For all weathers The E-Class All-Terrain Estate is to Mercedes- Benz what the A4 Avant Allroad is to Audi. It’s essentially a jacked-up edition of the E-Class estate, which is more capable of tackling adverse weather and road conditions thanks to its 39mm increased ride height. The E-Class All-Terrain Estate comes with standard 4MATIC all-wheeldrive, a nine-speed automatic gearbox and one efficient diesel engine, badged E350d. This 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 generates 258 hp and emits 179g/km, achieving 41.5 mpg, a vmax of 155mph and a 0-62 mph time of 6.2 seconds. Standard equipment includes the likes of a Burmester surround sound system; Air Body Control air suspension; panoramic electric sunroof; 12.3-inch infotainment display; 12.3-inch cockpit display; and 20-inch twin-spoke alloy wheels. Prices start from £58,880.

Return to form Welcome everyone to the most potent and most aggressive road going Octavia Skoda has ever built. It’s called the VRS 245 and it’s the VRS that the Octavia should’ve always been from the start. With a sportier look, a hiked power figure of 242hp and the addition of a motorsport-derived electronic limited slip differential situated between the front wheels, this Octavia VRS is the fastest Octavia yet. Powered from a 2.0-litre TFSI petrol engine, the 245 can achieve a 0-62mph time in 6.6 seconds. It is available in estate or hatch forms with either manual or DSG transmissions. Additional equipment over the standard VRS includes gloss black design features and 19-inch gloss black alloys. Available now, priced from £27,595 for the hatch and £28,540 for the estate. @SixerRMC

Racing to beat cancer TONY SHIRTCLIFFE GOT ALL REVVED UP ABOUT RACING WITH A CELEBRITY PARTNER AT THE SILVERSTONE CLASSIC – A HIGH-SPEED CHARITY FUNDRAISER.

I

f there’s one thing Tony Shirtcliffe of Malin Motor Bodies loves more than fixing up classic cars, it’s racing them. So when he was invited to take part in the Silverstone Classic 2017 – one of the world’s greatest historic race festivals – he jumped at the chance. Tony regularly takes part in races, from monthly races at Donington, to the annual Goodwood Revival, another big classic car race, which takes place every September. The Silverstone Classic race, however, is a particularly special race. This year’s race rallied drivers to raise money for Prostate Cancer UK. Bradfield Brewery is pleased to have sponsored Tony as part of this great motoring event and attended the Silverstone Classic to

cheer on the teams. The brewery has taken part in a number of charity events supporting Prostate Cancer UK in the past and is proud to once again supported a great cause. As part of its pledge to support Tony, the brewery has donated £1,000 to the charity.

@SixerRMC

“Each driver has to find a sponsor in order to take part in this race and we are so grateful that Bradfield Brewery teamed up with us,” says Tony. “We have been absolutely gobsmacked by their very generous donation to the charity and all their support to us.” With over 1,000 competing cars and a host of celebrities joining in the race line-up – including a trio of gold medal-winning Olympic rowers, England test cricket captain Mike Gatting OBE, Take That band member Howard Donald and Dragon Den’s Theo Paphitis – the event is a ‘must do’ in any historic racer’s bucket list. The drivers ertr paired with a celebrity driver and their points, based on their lap times, were combined to determine an overall

winner. Tony was paired with former Grand Prix motorcycle road racer and touring car racer Wayne Gardner. Tony and Wayne will each be racing Tony’s 1957 Austin A35 Academy car, alongside his HRDC Academy team members. The car, which has taken part in a number of races, is bright orange and is nicknamed the Flying Satsuma. The Car Owners’ Celebrity race was on the Saturday, and the A30 and A35s were be raced by the celebrities while the car owners watch. On Sunday, the car owners had their turn to race their own cars. As well as plenty of action-packed racing, the event at Silverstone also featured live performances from Dire Straits and Spandau Ballet. Like the Silverstone Classic race, Malin Motor Bodies is a business that thrives on tradition, with a long-standing reputation in Sheffield. With over 20 years’ experience, the seven-strong team guarantees high quality work and craftsmanship and aims to deliver a professional, efficient and cost-effective service to suit all of your motoring needs. The family-owned firm was initially established in 1989 on Malin Road by Tony Shirtcliffe, who has been in the motor trade all his life. His son Jonathon took the decision to join the business in 1998 after serving his apprenticeship in a Sheffield-based body shop. And in 1999, the team including Tony’s wife, Jayne, who is also the firm’s office administrator, relocated to premises on Nutwood Trading Estate, Limestone Cottage Lane. Over the years, the team have completed many restorations and have a repeat customer base that import their cars to the UK to have body work carried out. Services include general car and van repairs, body work, painting and alloy wheel refurbishment using high grade products including Dalby spray booths and ovens, to ensure you will be more than satisfied with their work. Jonathon and Jayne’s brother, John Hammond of L.R Hammond Motor Engineers, will be going with Tony to Silverstone as his mechanics, whilst Jayne and a group of friends will be joining the Bradfield Brewery team to cheer Tony and Wayne over the finish line. “It’s going to be a fantastic weekend with a huge party feel,” says Jayne. “This race is said to be one of the biggest classic car races in the world, so we’re really looking forward to getting the show on the road.”
