elcome to this month’s very special edition of Sixer. Special because, as you may have gathered from the front cover, the region’s leading lifestyle magazine is celebrating its 25th year this month! Yes, way back in August 1994 the first ever edition of Sixer magazine came hot off the press, and a quarter of a century later we’re still dedicated to bringing you the most interesting, the most informative, and the most important community-led stories from our area. Over the years, we’ve covered it all in our region. From the ups and downs (but mainly downs) of SWFC, the legacy of

the Tour de France and the arrival of Tramlines in Hillsborough Park, to the stories of sadly departed local legends such as Peter Stringfellow and one of the area’s most recognisable faces, Walter Holland. It’s been a fantastic quarter of a century and we’re over the moon to have made it to the milestone year, but we honestly couldn’t have done it without our fantastic readers and amazing clients, some of whom have been with us for many, many years. Those clients love Sixerland just as much as we do, so this month, we’ve decided to get them to tell us exactly what it is they love about the area, the

answers to which you can find scattered throughout this month’s magazine, as well as on social throughout the month. To continue the celebrations inside the mag, we will also be taking a nostalgiafilled trip back through 25 years of Sixer stories, as well as finding 25 reasons to come to Sixerland and taking a look back on last month’s hugely successful Tramlines festival. As well as our regular home deliveries, it’s now even easier to catch all our great stories each month, thanks to our new drop off points which can be found throughout the area. Look out for your nearest stand and pick up a copy today.

Sixer stories AS SIXER CELEBRATES ITS QUARTER CENTURY ANNIVERSARY, WE HAVE BEEN LOOKING BACK THROUGH THE ARCHIVES AT SOME OF THE STORIES AND PEOPLE WE HAVE WRITTEN ABOUT OVER THE YEARS. READ ON FOR THE HIGHLIGHTS IN SIXER’S 25-YEAR HISTORY.

1994 Sheffield’s Supertram opened on 21 March and the first Sheffield International Documentary Festival was held.

1995 Oasis played their first ever gig at what is now the FlyDSA Arena in April and Pulp’s Different Class album reached number one in the UK album chart.

July 1998 School reunions The thought of attending a school reunion sparks many emotions, but most of all, curiosity. Back in July 1998 writer Mary Hampshire explored the pros and cons of attending a school reunion and found that certain bonds remain unbroken, no matter how much time has passed.

March 1999 Interview with Sheffield Wednesday women’s team captain With the recent women’s world cup in the lime light, there have been many discussions around the differences in men and women’s football – particularly wages. 16 years ago, Chris Wilson interviewed Sheffield Wednesday women’s team captain, Steph Spence, and despite some progression – and much positivity drummed up from the world cup – many of the same questions and frustrations still exist today.

1998 Sheffield Eagles declared victory against Wigan in Challenge Cup at Wembley.

16 www.rmcmedia.co.uk

1999 The Euro currency was introduced and Manchester United achieved the treble.

1996 England got beaten by Germany in Euro ’96 semi finals – 6-5 in penalties. Germany went on to beat Czech Republic in the finals 2-1.

1997 The Full Monty, starring Robert Carlyle and Mark Addy, was released.

June 2001 Pedal power; local bobbies get on their mountain bikes South Yorkshire was one of the first forces to try out the Mountain Bike Patrol scheme, a year-long pilot which saw police men and women hop on to specially designed mountain bikes equipped with sirens, lights and police insignia. The bikes were a huge success; enabling officers to cover more ground than they could on foot, being able to get through rush-hour traffic quickly and helping PCs get fit too. The scheme proved so successful that it was tried out across eight more forces.

April 2002 Educating Holly Writer Holly Smith spent the day at Loxley Primary School, and found that grim school dinners, mad teachers and the evil children that she encountered as a child were a thing of the past. Instead Holly enjoyed a day of hymn singing, tasty food and learning sums alongside the many polite and friendly children.

2000 The Millennium Dome was officially opened.

2001 The Millennium Galleries opened as part of Sheffield’s Heart of the City regeneration project, linking the train station with the city centre.

March 2003 Forge days in the valley Take a walk through the Rivelin Valley and you will discover a wonderfully peaceful place, frequented by walkers and conservationists. But this tranquil setting is a far cry from the scene of industrial activity it once was, where 20 water wheels operated at various points along the river’s course, used to power corn mills, paper, forging, but mostly, Sheffield’s cutlery trade. Much of the site was in a state of disrepair, until John and Julia Hadfield bought and restored the formerly derelict Mousehole Forge. The Rivelin Valley Conservation Group also works tirelessly to improve the valley and its surroundings, and includes a task team of dedicated volunteers who carry out regular maintenance work.

April 2007 75 years of greyhound racing at Owlerton Owlerton celebrated its landmark birthday with a three-foot doggy cake. The boneshaped treat was made of 40 tins of dog food, 20k of dog biscuits and 14 packets of smash.

October 2007 How local businesses bounced back after the flood of 25 June 2007 When the flood waters hit Sheffield in June 2007 it seemed there wasn’t a low lying area of the city that wasn’t affected. Homes and businesses were left wrecked. The resilient business owners didn’t let the floods devastate them though and instead, they took the opportunity to shut down shop, clean up and embark on a new chapter.

March 2004 In search of Hillsborough’s tastiest pork sandwiches Sixer put four sandwich shops to the test, in a bid to find the Hillsborough’s finest pork sandwich. Baps from the Hungry Wolf, Béres Pork Shop, Biltons and Lilys were all judged on quality of meat, bread, stuffing and sauce. Béres (which has been around since 1961) was declared the winner, with Lilys in second place, and Biltons and Hungry Wolf in joint third.

2003 The Winter Gardens were officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II on 22 May.

2004 The Tsunami in South East Asia killed tens of thousands.

November 2007 Greg Rusedski opened Bradfield Village Hall Tennis ace Greg Rusedski helped serve up a day of delights to mark the grand opening of Bradfield’s village hall. Over 100 supporters turned out for the event and Greg enjoyed a buffet lunch with guests and local councillors before meeting Bradfield and Dungworth school children for a sports day extravaganza.

January 2008 Interview with downhill racer Steve Peat Victoria Murphy caught up with local Chapeltown lad Steve Peat. He grew up riding in Wharncliffe Woods and trained as an apprentice plumber, and it was his boss who introduced him to his first race. By 2008 he was twice World Champion, seven times British Champion and twice European Champion.

2006 The Arctic Monkeys’ Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not album became the fastest selling debut in British chart history on 29 January.

2008 Sheffield City Airport closed.

August 2008 Rutland CC celebrated 100 years on two wheels Rutland Cycling Club began with a group of church lads who would meet outside Rutland Hall and go riding on a Sunday. The club celebrated the centenary with a dinner at Cutlers’ Hall, featuring guest speaker – and former competitor in the Tour De France – Barry Hoban.

September 2008 An interview with Mel Sterland Chris Wilson caught up with former Wednesday legend Mel Sterland to find out how a happygo-lucky local boy ended up down a dark demon-filled path. His book Boozing, Betting and Brawling revealed all in a gripping football memoir. >>> www.rmcmedia.co.uk 17

2009 Barack Obama is inaugurated as the 44th President of the United States. Tramlines also held its first festival, which attracted 35,000 fans

2010 A treacherous winter brought snow depths of 30 inches to the Peak District.

December 2009 Loxley Valley Community Farm – five minutes of fame Loxely’s burgeoning community farm caught the eye of Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, who visited the farm in December with his film crew to show others how great community farms can be. The Loxley group was originally the brainchild of Mark Whitehouse, who acquired a licence to use a piece of land for agricultural purposes. A group of 43 committed volunteers joined together to run the farm, and after just six months they had nurtured a herd of pigs, a flock of chickens, a gaggle of geese and much more.

March 2010 Sir Ian McKellen visited Wisewood School Hollywood superstar Ian McKellen dropped into Wisewood to talk about the fight for gay rights. The school had established an excellent reputation for ensuring young people were taught about the normality of diversity in every area of life, including sexuality. During the visit, Sir Ian was shown work done by the students in art classes about conflict, focussing on the theme of same-sex hand holding and a drama lesson.

2013 Nelson Mandela died age 95, Andy Murray won Wimbledon, the Castle Market closed after 54 years of trading and the £18million Moor Market opened.

2014 The Lyceum Theatre underwent a nine-week, £1.93million makeover.

2011 William and Kate got married, to an estimated global audience of more than two billion.

2012 London hosted the Olympic Games for the third time.

October 2011 Stannington Players – 60 years in the spotlight Amateur dramatic society, the Stannington Players, celebrated 60 years of entertaining locals with quality theatre. The group has a rich history that dates back to just after the war; they actually began as a play-reading society in people’s houses. There were many name changes over the years but the group formally formed as the Stannington Players in 1951.

March 2013 Local Legend John Burkhill Writer Adam Kay caught up with ‘the mad man with the pram’ John Burkhill. He had been walking the streets of Sheffield for nine years, dressed in his green-wig-and-shorts outfit, and his unmistakable ‘help Macmillan Cancer Care’ pram. John’s charity efforts – including completing 890 races and raising more than £1130,00 in the process – had made him one of the region’s most recognisable charity fundraisers. Adam found that actually there’s nothing crazy about John, he’s just a chap from Sheffield with a determination to help those in need.

2015 A Conservative government won the 2015 election and Princess Charlotte was born.

2016 Leicester City defied the odds to win the Premier League for the first time.

March 2014 Great Sheffield Flood 150th anniversary Writer Hannah Pearson recalled the night the Dale Dyke Dam burst and caused the worst man-made catastrophe in the country’s history. A small crack in one of the dam’s walls led to almost complete destruction of the Loxley Valley and Malin Bridge villages and claimed hundreds of lives. To mark the anniversary, Bradfield Brewery brewed a commemorative ale and local artist Andrew Vickers (aka Stoneface) created a sculpture.

June 2014 Focus on the Tour De France The Tour De France was one of – if not the – biggest events to ever grace the rolling hills of Sheffield. This all-cycling issue featured a Tour De France guide, an explanation of the jerseys, an interview with Team Sky’s Ben Swift, cycling fashion and a feature on the Bradfield Hill Climb. 18 www.rmcmedia.co.uk

February 2015 Interview with Peter Stringfellow Sixer gave feature writer Adam Kay a cheap day return and off he popped to Soho to interview one of Sheffield’s most famous sons, nightclub entrepreneur Peter Stringfellow. The man who pioneered Sheffield’s early nightlife scene in the 1960s was now 74 and happy to reflect on an eventful life. “”I’m called the King of Clubs,” he said. “I’m still the only guy that’s had a club in Sheffield, Leeds, Manchester, London, Miami, New York and Beverley Hills, and owned all of them. Nobody else has done that.” Sadly Peter died three years later but we found him in a cheerful upbeat mood, still looking the part with immaculate silver slicked-back hair and oozing contentment, happily married to a ballet dancer 42 years his junior with a baby daughter.

October 2016 Meeting a gentle giant From Hackney to Hillsborough is quite a journey but 6ft 6ins basketball star Olu Babalola told Sixer’s Molly McGreevy that after a playing a career that took him to America and Europe before finishing with four seasons shooting hoops for Sheffield Sharks he was now intent on setting up a new business specialising in ‘real soul food.’

2017 After winning the US presidential election in 2016, Donald Trump was inaugurated before crowds of millions (according to him) or thousands (according to photographs) on 20 January.

January 2019 From Crookes to the world

October 2017 Focus on Walkley

Sheffield born singer and musical Paul Carrack has come a long way from his early days playing in local bands, touring and playing with everyone from Eric Clapton and BB King to Mike and the Mechanics. But, as he told Sixer’s Richard Abbey, his latest solo tour and a gig at Sheffield City Hall gave him a chance to return to his roots in Crookes, meet up with family and friends...and catch up with his favourite football team. “I love going up, for my sins, to see Sheffield Wednesday,” he said. “I’m a season ticket holder but don’t get many games out of it these days.”

North Sheffield is a vibrant area with many contrasts and in a special feature on Walkley we found a thriving tight-night community with an intriguing blend of Victorian stone-clad terraces, churches, chapels, restaurants, cafes, a wide range of independent businesses and a volunteer-run library that is very much at the heart of local life.

July 2018 Digging in “Everything tastes better when it’s home-grown,” was the message from the local community of allotment owners when Hannah Sanders paid a visit during this heatwave summer. Hannah visited Morley Street allotments at Walkley Bank and found a happy, cheerful band of gardeners - from experts to complete beginners. Their on-site shop, plant sales and newly-built greenhouses created a strong sense of community. “The work is endless but rewarding and when you see blue tits coming out of your bird boxes, or gather your first crop it makes all the hard graft worthwhile,” said allotment holder Brian Legge.

2018 The world watched avidly as a junior football team trapped in a cave in Chiang Rai, Thailand, were rescued. It took more than 18 days to finally rescue the 12 team members, aged 11 to 17, and their 25-year-old assistant coach. One diver died during the rescue effort.

2019 Boris Johnson became Prime Minister and vowed to deliver Brexit by 31 October, unite the Tory party, energise the country and defeat Jeremy Corbyn.

3 Hillsborough Park Hillsborough Park is always a hive of activity, with sport facilities, a children’s playground and a walled garden for visitors to relax in with a picnic on sunny days. The garden dates back to 1779, when it is believed to have been used as a place to grow soft fruits for Hillsborough Hall. Another thing that Hillsborough Park is known for is the hugely popular and free park run, which takes place every Saturday morning at 9am. Runners of any ability can join in; it’s all about bringing the community together through a sport which everyone can enjoy. Register today by filling out the form at www.parkrun.org.uk/ hillsborough 36 www.rmcmedia.co.uk

Since opening in Spring 2016, Fox Valley retail park in Stocksbridge has certainly become a hub of activity for the small town famed for its historical impact on the steel industry. With household favourites such as Next and Boots, its regional independent department store Sandersons, and plenty of eating venues to discover, the commercial centre has something to offer everybody. Fox Valley also hosts a weekly Friday market, where visitors can expect to find a wide variety of locally grown produce and beautiful handcrafted jewellery and gifts. The market runs every Friday from 10am-4pm and is located in the central walkway at the end of the centre. There are also various walking routes and trails around the area, taking a closer look into the beauty of the rural aspects and woodlands of Sheffield. For history fans, Rivelin Valley is home to over 20 archaeological remains, which give an indication of what it would have been like to live in Sheffield in the past.

5 Malin Bridge Water Wheel

Step into historic Sheffield by visiting the Malin Bridge Water Wheel. When the old mill was converted into flats, the water wheel was preserved and is still standing today. Although no longer in use, it’s an incredibly interesting relic of our industrial past, and is sure to make any walk or visit around this area much more memorable.

Hillsborough Park Walled Garden

Hillsborough Park Walled Garden came about in 1991 when, after hearing of council plans to turn a disused corner of Hillsborough Park into a car-park, a handful of North Sheffield residents took it upon themselves to create a space for the community to reflect and relax. The garden’s gates first opened to visitors on 15 April 1992, the third anniversary of the Hillsborough Disaster, which has been permanently commemorated in the creation of the Memorial Garden and the “Shankly Gates” at the main entrance. The Walled Garden remains today a beautiful, well-loved and peaceful haven in a bustling, densely populated area of the city. To discover more about the Hillsborough Park Walled Garden, visit http://www.fohp.btck.co.uk/WalledGarden.

10 Hillsborough Park Library Hillsborough’s library is steeped in local history, having hosted a number of wealthy families during its role as a beloved family home during the 18th and 19th centuries. In 1906, the house was converted into a public lending library, though members of the public were not allowed to physically get their hands on the shelves until 23 years later. Before then borrowers selected a book from a catalogue, gave the librarian the catalogue number and their chosen book was then collected. The library is still open today, and hosts a number of events and activities for the whole family. Keep up to date with all upcoming library events here www.sheffield.gov.uk/home/libraries -archives/library-events.

8 Owlerton Stadium Owlerton Stadium attracts around 300,000 visitors annually, with all events being very popular with the public. As well as greyhound racing, Owlerton Stadium is also used for speedway racing and is home to the Sheffield Speedway Tigers. Whilst at the stadium, you can visit the various bars and restaurants on offer, with top-quality food and service. You can also hold parties or other celebrations at Owlerton Stadium, or create a night to remember with private Executive Boxes for you and your friends. 11 Bassett’s The Bassett’s Company was founded in Sheffield by George Bassett in 1842. It started off as a small, Sheffield-based business, and quickly grew into a global success under high demand. Possibly the most famous of Bassett’s sweets are the Liquorice Allsorts. These particular sweets were created by accident when Bassett’s salesman Charlie Thompson dropped samples of several different products in front of a customer. The customer was taken by the idea of a mixture of lots of different sweets put together, and so Liquorice Allsorts were born.

12 Hills Sheffield is known for being located on and among seven hills. There’s plenty of opportunity to go for a walk in the countryside, and many people living elsewhere often come to the city in search of our rural beauties. Stannington, in particular, is a great place to take a walk. There are many routes around the Stannington area, winding their way across farm tracks and stiles. Popular routes are often well signposted, so there’s no need to worry about getting lost along the way. Find lots of routes in and around Sheffield at www.casualramblers.co.uk/syorks/sheffield www.rmcmedia.co.uk 37

15 River Don

The River Don flows through Hillsborough and is around 70 miles long. It’s a very prominent aspect of Sheffield’s geography, and even gives its name to the Don River in Toronto, Canada. Fig trees grow along part of the river. The seeds don’t usually germinate in the English climate, and are generally grown in Middle Eastern and Mediterranean countries. However, the hot metal in some of the steel factories resulted in the water temperature at certain points increasing to above 20ºC. The river is also home to an abundance of wildlife, such as salmon, otters and a variety of birds.

Morton 16 Swann Founded in 1932 by Walter Swann, J. Albert Morton and Doris Fairweather, Swann-Morton has become a world leader in the manufacture of surgical blades, scalpels and handles. It is a name respected globally for quality, precision, consistency and reliability and recognised for combining traditional blade making skills with the latest technology. Walter Swann wanted to set up his own company because he was a ‘thorough-going revolutionary Socialist’ and an active Trade Union member, and had effectively been black-listed by many companies in Sheffield. As well as enforcing four guiding socialist principles, Swann-Morton was reportedly the first to introduce a 40 hour working week, and paid bonuses to their workers. The company also owned their own farm and orchard in Wisbech, which allowed them to distribute fresh fruit to their workers.

Pearls of wisdom MAKE A CULTURED CHOICE WHEN IT COMES TO CHOOSING THE RIGHT PEARL, WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM PA JEWELLERY. earls are perfect for summer weddings and garden parties, adding classic detail to an outfit. When choosing them you will probably notice that prices vary quite considerably, and it is not always immediately obvious why, so here are some of the features to look out for. Firstly, freshwater cultured pearls generally cost less than saltwater cultured pearls. One reason for this is that multiple freshwater pearls may be grown at the same time in the same mussel whereas saltwater cultured pearls can only be grown singly. You can learn more about this in our blog, ‘Pearls: A Cultured Choice’ on our website. Pearls come in a surprisingly wide range of shades: like going to a DIY store and finding an entire shelf of cream paints! They have a body colour and secondary overtones: white may err towards yellowish or pinkish while black pearls will often have strong overtones of

purple or green. Some pearls may display a characteristic iridescent effect called orient with shimmering colours appearing to float across the surface; this can be very attractive. The most desirable shape for a pearl is perfectly round. However, offround to button shapes are popular for stud earrings as they sit neatly, while symmetrical drop-shaped pearls are perfect for earrings or pendants. Increasingly unusual, baroque shapes can give a more relaxed look; they make a good choice if you want a less formal necklace. A perfectly smooth surface is preferable, but most pearls will have blemishes of some kind. These can range from tiny indentations to significant ridges affecting the overall shape. Minor blemishes can be hidden by placing a drill hole or setting in the correct position, while major ridges or chips can be more problematic and decrease desirability and value considerably. Pearls have a lustre that is aptly described as ‘pearly’, but it can still vary. A brighter, more reflective lustre is associated with thicker nacre layers and smoother surface. If the pearl looks dull this can be because the nacre is quite thin which can reduce durability.

Matching gemstones that have so many variables is not straightforward, but it can make a big difference to a finished piece. Traditionally, pearl necklaces graduated in size although now they often feature an entire row of pearls of the same size. In addition to ensuring the colour and lustre match, it is important to have pearls of the same size and shape for a smooth look around a necklace or balance within a pair of earrings. If you are trying to match existing pieces, it is important to bring them with you so that a match, especially for colour, may be found. Teeming with food, music and fashion throughout the four-day celebration (as well as top-class horse racing, of course) this event is one of the biggest of the year in Yorkshire’s social calendar, and you won’t want to miss it. The William Hill St Leger Festival runs over a four-day period, between 11 and 14 September, and each day offers a new and unique experience for racegoers to enjoy. The festival ends on a climax with the iconic Leger Stakes – the classic horse race that has played a central role in Yorkshire’s history since its establishment in 1776. 2018 saw trainer Aidan O’Brien take the top prize for the sixth time in the festival’s history, when his horse Kew Gardens romped home. Visitors can experience the Champagne Lawn, cheer the sporting action from the Grandstand, enjoy fine dining in the Lincoln Restaurant or visit the elegant trackside Club 1776 Restaurant marquee. Regardless of the tickets you purchase, all visitors are guaranteed to have an outstanding time. The fun doesn’t stop there, though, because after the racing there’s also brilliant live entertainment and music, ensuring that there’s never a dull moment for Festival visitors. Here’s a closer look at what’s happening across the four days.

T

Leger Legends Day

DFS Ladies’ Day

(Wednesday 11 September) The opening day of the St Leger Festival sees retired professional jockeys return to the saddle for St Leger Legends Day, first run in 2010. The jockeys participate in a charity race, and the money raised is donated to Doncaster’s Northern Racing College and Jack Berry House, a rehabilitation centre for injured racers. Leger Legends Day is a perfect opener to the festival, so head down to Town Moor to see some familiar faces and to support this worthwhile cause.

(Thursday 12 September) Brimming with glitz and glamour, the DFS Ladies’ Day is a wonderful occasion to dig out your best dresses and heels as visitors compete to win the crown for the Best Dressed Lady. The winner of the competition will then go on to represent Doncaster Racecourse at the final of Yorkshire’s Best Dressed Lady in October 2019. On Ladies’ Day there’s also the Silk Series Final race, specifically designed for female jockeys. Both the 2017 and 2018 races were won by Megan Nicholls, daughter of jockeyturned-trainer Paul Nicholls. The event is known to attract over 15,000 people each year from all over the country, so make sure you bag yourself a spot at Doncaster Racecourse to experience this unmissable day of racing and live entertainment after the races, featuring a DJ set from Spice Girl Melanie C, and refreshments.

The excitement doesn’t end after the racing has finished; you can also catch DJ sets from Spice Girl Melanie C on Ladies’ Day and Kaiser Chiefs’ Ricky Wilson on Gentleman’s Day 62 www.rmcmedia.co.uk

Gentlemen’s Day

St Leger Day

(Friday 13 September) Similar to Ladies’ Day, St Leger’s Gentlemen’s Day is a sophisticated and stylish day for chaps who want to don their sharpest suits for the chance to win the award for Best Dressed Male, as well as for those who wish to simply enjoy a day out with their friends and family. Taking prime position is the Doncaster Cup horse race – the oldest and one of the most exciting races run under the Rules of Horse Racing. After the thrill of the race, enjoy the live DJ set from Kaiser Chiefs’ Ricky Wilson whilst tasting the delicious food and drink on offer around the racecourse. For the best view of the Doncaster Cup (or any of the races run throughout the festival), book a place in the County Enclosure, which allows you full access to all areas of the course so you feel like the ultimate VIP.

(Saturday 14 September) More than 250,000 visitors flock to Doncaster for the St Leger Festival, and the grand finale is undoubtedly the St Leger Stakes. The world’s oldest Classic horse race is open to three-year-old thoroughbred colts and fillies. But there’s also a full programme of top-class competitive sporting action throughout the day with races such as the Group Two Champagne Stakes and the fast-paced and competitive Portland Handicap Sprint. In addition to the thrilling races, which always add an element of anticipation for the crowd at Doncaster Racecourse, the William Hill St Leger Festival is a fantastic social occasion complete with fashion, live entertainment, food and drink, making the entire four-day event all the more enjoyable and unforgettable.

United in the fight against cancer n 8 September, lifelong Sheffield Wednesday supporter and former proprietor of The Wortley Arms, Sheffield, Andy Gabbitas and devoted Blade, Aled Williams will be putting their local rivalry aside as they walk a marathon 26 miles across London Aled and Andy in support of Prostate Cancer UK. Alongside the duo at the 2019 March for Men will be legendary Sky Sports presenter, Jeff Stelling, who will be joining thousands of fundraisers from all over the country on a whistle-stop-tour of five of the capital’s football stadiums. Starting at London Road, home of West Ham United and finishing at the new Tottenham Hotspur stadium, Andy and Aled will pound the pavement to help combat a disease which will affect one in six men at some point in their lives. Together, they have raised over £12,000 to date. “Both Aled and I have seen first-hand why charities like this need support and football’s a fantastic vehicle for driving awareness,” said Andy. “No matter what team you support, everyone’s together in the fight against cancer and we’d really appreciate your support.”

DO YOU REMEMBER?

Fun in the sun his month’s stroll down memory lane includes two contrasting images of how leisure time was spent in years gone by. There’s some great costumes on display. I doubt anyone will recognise the straw man (!) but who’s the moody looking young chap in the cowboy outfit? Last month’s photos also had a holiday flavour as, courtesy of Barry Couldwell, we were shown a glimpse of the Worrall Whitsuntide gathering and a ladies’ day at the seaside. Meanwhile the sporting pictures shown in our June issue continue to resonate with Sixer readers. Mick Beaumont from Worrall says: “I immediately recognised the left hand photo as one I had seen in our family photographs. My father Roy Beaumont was the captain and is centre front holding the shield and my grandfather Wilfred Beaumont is the small gent fourth from the left on the back row. “My grandfather worked for Middlewood hospital in some capacity that enabled him to live in the bungalow in their grounds that is currently up for sale – opposite the driveway to Hillsborough Golf Club’s entrance on Worrall Road. “The second photo, which is not one that I have seen before, has my father far right on the back row.” We’re delighted to have brought back some pleasing family memories. Now let’s see how you get on this month.

Happy Mondays

Good times WHAT WAS YOUR HIGHLIGHT? WE LOOK BACK AT ANOTHER BRILLIANT TRAMLINES WEEKEND IN HILLSBOROUGH PARK. fter two hugely successful years, Hillsborough Park seems like a natural setting for Tramlines. Ten years on, this summer’s sell-out was perhaps the best yet with headline appearances from Two Door Cinema Club, Courteeners and Nile Rodgers and Chic. After a wet Friday – wellies and waterproofs required – the weather came good as crowds flocked to see the likes of Annie Mac, Rag ‘N’ Bone Man, Lewis Capaldi and Johnny Marr. There was a real family atmosphere too; the bigger Into the Woods area

proved to be a big hit with kids while parents happily tucked into the vast amount of food and drink on offer. Tickets for next year’s event went on sale the day after this year’s festival finished and such was the demand, already half of tickets have been sold. Tramlines’ Timm Cleasby said: “It’s wonderful that the people of Sheffield have enjoyed it so much that they’ve given us this demand and wanted to come back so early on. It’s such a lovely feeling to have, that we’ve done a good job.” Roll on next year.

Cutting to the heart of the matter THROUGH HER WORK WITH CITY HEARTS, CLAIRE JENNINGS’ HAIRDRESSING SKILLS ARE GIVING VICTIMS OF HUMAN TRAFFICKING AND MODERN SLAVERY A NEW CONFIDENCE.

As a volunteer at City Hearts, hairdresser Claire Jennings is using her skills to boost the self-esteem of survivors of human trafficking

HEROES

hairdresser for 34 years, Claire Jennings is used to seeing women change before her eyes. But now the transformations she witnesses go much deeper. The mum of two from Sheffield is helping to restore the self-esteem of women rescued from trafficking and modern slavery. She is a volunteer with the Sheffieldheadquartered charity City Hearts one day a week. Every Monday she arrives with scissors, brushes, hairdryers and curlers to find a queue of women from the charity’s safe houses waiting for her. “When I first meet them they can’t make eye contact with me. They have no confidence and feel like shadows of the women they once were, but they put their trust in me,” said Claire. “Usually their hair is long and in very bad condition. I try to get around the language difference to find out what style they want me to do – it’s important they feel in control. And at the end, when they look in the mirror, they light up. It’s as if they change as a person in front of my eyes. “Women from all walks of life feel happier about themselves after a haircut. But for women rescued from trafficking, the experience makes them feel feminine again. A new image even signals a new direction for their lives.” Added Claire: “Some have become regular clients. One, who is in her forties and from Eastern Europe, couldn’t make eye contact with anyone when I first met her. She seemed really depressed. She hugged me tight afterwards. She often comes for haircuts and every time I see her she is happier.” Claire applied to become a City Hearts volunteer nine months ago, and found her niche by using the hairdressing skills she honed during a career with Toni & Guy. After starting at 15 as a Saturday girl at Sweeney’s in Castle Market, Claire was a stylist with Sheffield’s John Taylor salon until Toni & Guy arrived in the city. She became a trainer and assistant manager and then spent four years with the company’s artistic team in London and Manchester. But at the height of her career, she decided to walk away. “I had money, a nice home and lifestyle,” she explains. “But when my mum got seriously ill I reassessed my life and decided to do something more worthwhile. I looked after mum, then went to India to work with a project caring for street children.”

A

“The women have grown to trust me and just by spending time with them, I’m helping them. I loved being a hairdresser but volunteering is the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done.”

Claire visited the charity twice and fundraised to provide a teacher. Two years later, when the children got into mainstream school she bought them uniforms. Claire also raised £1,500 to enable a seven-year-old girl to have surgery on her twisted feet, which enabled her to walk. She approached City Hearts after her experiences in India heightened her awareness of human trafficking, and also now volunteers at one of the charity’s safe houses. “It’s so rewarding. The women have grown to trust me and just by spending time with them, I’m helping them. I loved being a hairdresser but volunteering is the most rewarding thing

I’ve ever done. Now I can combine both. During National Volunteering Week I’d urge anyone to consider giving their time to help others.” City Hearts launched in Sheffield in 2005 to help people whose lives have been torn apart by modern slavery, and now has offices in Scotland and the North West and East of England. It has worked with 3,000 men, women and children. The charity is appealing for more people to join its team of 33 Sheffield volunteers who assist at its dropin centres and female, male and family safe houses. ROAD TEST

Sporty new look PHOEBE SEYMOUR SENSES AN AIR OF SOPHISTICATION ABOUT THE NEW MG3. ith sporty, stylish and distinctive looks, MG’s range of cars has captured the hearts of countless admirers going back over nearly 100 years. The designs may have changed considerably over the decades, but when you get behind the wheel of a modern MG, it’s clear that the iconic octagonal badge still represents something extra special. This certainly proved to be the case when I booked in for a test drive at Eric Stead in Ecclesfield to take the new MG3 for a spin. Like the MG itself, Eric Stead has a long and established reputation. It is one of the oldest motor dealerships in the area, having opened in 1962. As such, all of the staff at this family-run business have a great depth of knowledge about the models on offer. You’ll even find a couple of gorgeous vintage MGs when you visit their showroom. Sales executive, Dave Hall, handed over the keys before familiarising me with the new features inside. I’d been given the Exclusive MG3 in Ruby Red, which comes with all the same features as the Explore and Excite models in the range, plus some added extras including sports seats, cruise control, reversing camera with dynamic guide lines, Apple

CarPlay™ and DAB radio with USB connection for smart phones. Though a truly modern car, from its LED lights to its adherence to the Euro 6 Emissions standards, there is an element of simplicity that I really liked. The controls are straight forward and I breathed a sigh of relief to see that the handbrake was in fact a handbrake and not a button. Before I knew it, I was zipping down the road easily weaving between parked cars and effortlessly climbing through

the gears. Though compact on the outside, this car is something of a Tardis, with plenty of leg room in the back and a spacious boot on the inside. With a high and comfortable seats, it would be perfect for a long drive too. Now driving down Stocksbridge Bypass, I was able to really put my foot down. And even at high speeds it’s a smooth, and yes, really fun drive. Once I’d reached the Langsett Barn carpark, I was able to try out the parking assist technology, with its helpful guidelines and beep as I neared the curb, before returning. I was sad to give the keys back to Dave, and when he asked how it had gone, I couldn’t help smiling from ear to ear. The new MG3 did exactly as it had promised; it had given me an enjoyable drive in a stylish (inside and out) car. And with zero percent finance, the option to spread repayments over five years with a 20 per cent deposit and a seven-year warranty, I know many people will learn to love this car.
