Life through lockdown Ecclessfield Parish Archive is welcoming public submissions to its new collection, Life Through Lockdown. We all know we have been living through an historical event since lockdown commenced at the end of March due to the Coronavirus. People will look back on this for generations to come, so Ecclesfield Parish Archives are putting together a collection of photographs, videos, and other media to document such a momentous time. They are hoping to curate a really diverse collection showing all aspects of ‘life through lockdown’ from the empty streets and empty supermarket shelves to more social photographs showing families surviving life in lockdown, homeschooling, socially distant street parties and anything else which will give generations of the future a real feel for what life was like during the pandemic. Volunteer Peter hits all the right notes Music lover Peter Bower is hitting all the right notes as he volunteers for St Luke’s Hospice. Peter, who lives in Oughtibridge, is part of the team supporting the St Luke’s retail team, preparing items for sale on the charity’s hugely popular eBay platform. His love of music – he plays the guitar – made him the ideal person to specialise in the many musical instruments that are donated. And even though he would normally be based the St Luke’s Donation Centre, near Meadowhall, Peter has been able to continue his support from home during lockdown. “I tend to specialise in musical instruments, especially guitars, identifying the makes and then making any repairs and making sure they are playable,” he explained. “I think the reason we get so many guitars is that people pick them up thinking they want to learn then decide they don’t want to play any more.” Other instruments that come Peter’s way include everything from violins and cellos to African drums, a zither and even an Australian didgeridoo! 100 years of golf Tinsley Park Golf Course recently celebrated its 100th birthday. The municipal course, which is managed by the health and wellbeing charity, Sheffield City Trust opened the first nine holes of the course on 17 July 1920, with an additional nine holes being added later. The official opening ceremony included an exhibition match between George Duncan (Open Champion), James Braid, J H Taylor and Abe Mitchell, was well attended with many council officials amongst the guests, including; Sir William Clegg, Alderman Cattell; Mr T W Quine and Captain Fred Banning. The full 18-hole course was officially opened on 23 April 1921, costing £12,000 to build. 560 people paid for admission on the day of the exhibition game and with members and invited guests, close to 1,000 spectators witnessed the day’s play. Andrew Snelling, Sheffield City Trust Chief Executive, said: “Our leisure and entertainment facilities are a well-established part of life in Sheffield and over the years we’ve seen them evolve along with the needs of our residents. “Everyone is welcome through the doors, at all our venues, and we’re looking forward to when we can reopen more of our much-loved facilities to local people once again. The course remains open and is operating in a Covid-safe manner. As a result of the coronavirus outbreak, the Trust has made some changes to how the game will be played. This will ensure the safety of members players and colleagues and help prevent the spread of coronavirus. Rare cognac up for sale A 152-year-old brandy, still in a good drinkable condition, is available from a Sheffield-based private seller. Visitors to the BBC website may have read a recent story about a rare bottle of cognac – dating to 1762 – selling at auction for £118,000. The vintage Gautier bottle – one of only three left in the world – was purchased by a private collector in Asia. Not quite of the same vintage but almost as historic is a bottle of 1868 Cordon Bleu cognac. The original label shows that is was sold by Hay & Son, wine merchants of Sheffield. Queen of clutter A UK not-for-profit organisation which helps individuals to cope with overcoming chaos caused by amassing excessive amounts of clutter is launching a new operation to support people affected by hoarding behaviours across Northern England, after it was identified that South Yorkshire was identified as needing more support with addressing the complexities of hoarding. Hoarding Disorders UK (North) has based itself in Sheffield, with S6 businesswoman Heather Tingle as a director. In her new role, Heather from Untangled by Tingle, along with Rebecca Chauhan from Clutter Cleared and Jo Cavalot from Dottymow, will be responsible for building and developing a range of specialist support groups, offering training to organisations who work with people with clutter issues and offering one-to-one help and training to individuals affected by problems associated with amassing excessive amounts of stuff. Heather a member of the Association of Professional Declutterers and Organisers (APDO) met with Rebecca and Jo earlier this year and they collectively decided that South Yorkshire needed a Community Interest Company to support clients with hoarding disorder and to raise awareness.

Join Roundabout at the 2021 London Marathon Dust off those running shoes and get back in training as South Yorkshire youth homelessness charity Roundabout joins the start line for the 2021 Virgin Money London Marathon. Roundabout has been awarded a coveted charity place in the world famous sporting event, which is scheduled to take place in the capital on Sunday 25 April. And runners are now being invited to put their names forward to be in with a chance of representing the charity on the big day. “The past few months have been very tough for us as our programme of fundraising events has been put on hold as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Roundabout chief executive Ben Keegan. “To have been awarded a place at the 2021 London Marathon is very exciting and important for us and we’re looking for someone who will commit to fundraising as much as they can. “If successful, you will be raising vital funds for your local youth homeless charity, where we are committed to helping some of South Yorkshire’s most vulnerable young people.” To express interest, simply visit the Roundabout website – roundabouthomeless.org/event/london-marathon-2021 – and fill in the interest form with as much detail as possible. What is Medisculpt therapy? G&M HEALTHCARE’S DR GRACE HULA EXPLAINS THE BENEFITS TO THEIR WEIGHT LOSS PROGRAMME. ediSculpt Therapy is a nonsurgical weight loss program used to improve weight loss, obesity and some chronic medical conditions like type 2 diabetes mellitus, high cholesterol, hypertension and sleep apnoea. Medisculpt Therapy comprises of three main components; the diet, which is based on high protein foods with low carbohydrate and low fat contents and two body contouring treatments, LPG Endermologie and Vanquish Me or Exilis Elite machines. The body contouring treatment LPG Endermologie is used for skin tightening in order to prevent the development of loose and sagging skin during and after the rapid weight loss. The second body contouring machine is a radio frequency machine for body fat reduction. G&M Healthcare has two machines – either the Exilis Elite or the Vanquish Machine – and the choice of which machine to use depends on the treatment package and area of the body requiring treatment. The radio frequency machines result in a significant fat reduction in targeted areas like the tummy, thighs or arms. These treatments are carried out weekly by fully trained therapists and last about 30-40 minutes each. In total you need about 75-90 minutes per week for your treatments. Weight loss with MediSculpt Therapy is safe, efficient and rapid. The weight loss progress is constantly monitored by a qualified GP and fully trained therapists who check weight loss progress, blood pressure, body fat content, metabolic rates and do blood tests on a regular basis. With regard to the results, G&M know from experience that a female patient will typically lose one stone a month and a male patient will typically lose one to one and a half stones.

MediSculpt Therapy consists of six phases, which deliver amazing, safe, efficient and sustainable weight loss. During phase one of MediSculpt Therapy the diet comprises of five meals and one snack a day. Protein foods are filling, hence patients don’t feel hungry. To supplement the diet some fruit and vegetables are also allowed on the diet. The vegetables can be boiled, steamed, roasted, grilled or stir-fried. Herbs and spices can be added to increase flavour. G&M Healthcare do metabolic tests to check your rates and also provide supplements to ensure you don’t lack in essential minerals like magnesium, potassium, sodium chloride, calcium and trace minerals.You need to fast for at least four hours before your metabolic test or initial blood test. Once the phase one target is achieved after losing about 70 per cent of your target weight, patients move onto phase two of the diet where normal foods, like weighed amounts of chicken, meat, fish and dairy like eggs, are introduced. Once 90 per cent of your target weight loss is achieved, patients are weaned to measured amounts of normal eating on phase three. Thereafter phases four to six are stabilisation phases to ensure that optimum weaning off from the diet is achieved without putting on back the weight you have lost on.

Once you have achieved your stabilisation, G&M Healthcare has a lifelong maintenance programme where they offer six weekly follow-ups for review by a therapist who measures your weight and body fat composition. Follow up is then three to six-monthly for one year or as required thereafter. Cost of the program depends on the package you choose.There are three price packages – basic, standard and deluxe. All packages consist of your consultation fee (£100) and blood test fee (£100) followed by the package fees. Supplement prices are £50/month but vary depending on the package you choose. The basic package is £125/week for only food. The standard package is £250/week for food and body contouring treatments with LPG Endermologie and Vanquish or Exilis Elite. Cocktail parties. Cocktail dress. All the greater surprise then, to learn that this icon of sophistication owes its existence to altogether more humble origins. At one time, drinking a cocktail could mean having the collar on that exquisite dinner jacket felt by the law. Welcome to the murky underworld of prohibition. If you think the lockdown was pretty

tough, then imagine it lasting for 13 years. In 1920, the sale or transportation of all alcoholic drinks became illegal in the USA. This merely had the effect of driving the trade underground. Jazz age venues became louche speakeasies, crime (especially bootlegging) rose, and the ban apparently caused tens of thousands of Americans to fall ill – there was an exemption for those who required alcohol for medical reasons.The sale of patent medicines also went through the roof. the art. Firstly to Sheffield, and to the luxurious and hugely popular Kettle Black on Ecclesall Road, the city’s most vibrant thoroughfare. Here, general manager Jack Hartley presides over a list of 75 different cocktails. If you’re not sure which you want to try, there is even a taste guide on the list which steers you towards those which you are more likely to prefer. Jack displays his mastery of the mix by creating a special cocktail just for us. “I was aiming for a cocktail that was relevant to the times we live in, and also the season. So this one is bursting with refreshing summer fruit flavours”, he says. With a wry reference to this year’s government-imposed restrictions, this is a drink to signal that the good times are back. A cocktail jigger can be easily bought online. “The next bit of advice would be to always use fresh citrus, don’t buy premade, get some lemons or limes and get juicing. This will instantly create bettertasting drinks. Finally follow recipes, there are a plethora of recipes online on

various websites you can reference such as Diffords Guide, but also a large amount of drinks books available as well at various stores.”
