t is every little girl’s dream to become a professional ballet dancer, to wear decadent costumes and perform in front of a crowd; but as adults we know the huge amount of hard work and discipline that comes along with this highly respected profession. Tala Lee-Turton is no stranger to the challenge of the industry, having been selected to train at the Bolshoi Academy in Russia at the age of just 16. However, we got to speak to Tala as she prepares to debut her first live production back in her home county of South Yorkshire – the highly anticipated “dance and music experience” that will take place in Sheffield Botanical Gardens as part of the Dance in the Gardens event, and in the grounds of Wentworth House, Rotherham. Tala’s production ‘No Time Like the Present’ has involved two years of bid writing, pitching to potential corporate sponsors, bringing together an awesome and diverse team, developing the concept and planning operations. She hopes that audiences will be able to connect with performance and feel within the very centre of it. Tala is taking her own strict training in the Russian style and combining it with a modern take in an outdoor setting in order to create an immersive experience for the audience, whilst giving her a chance to pay homage to the beauty of her homeland. “The outdoors has its own temperament – it is alive like an indoor space never can be. This challenges the creative team in that we have to harness the energy of the natural environment and interact with it, almost like a sixth dancer!” she says. This is a daring step away from a traditional theatre setting, meaning Tala and her team will have to work harder to jump higher and embrace the unpredictability of the nature around them, though the excitement that it presents makes this worth it for her.

As well as the setting, Tala feels a huge importance is placed on using a diverse range of performers who come from different backgrounds and have different skills, as the production also enables her to celebrate her South Yorkshire identity, which she says she is very proud of. “In No Time like the Present, each of the five dancers has a solo in which to communicate their inner realities to the audience,” Tala explains. “During my solo, I deliberately investigate my background as a woman of dual heritage from South Yorkshire - it is a crucial part of why I am who I am.” This will make for a thoughtprovoking and incredible performance that will resonate with viewers due to Tala’s impressive creativity, performed against an enrapturing pop-synth score. All this sounds like a huge amount of work and potentially daunting preparation, but Tala says she loves a challenge, which could be a quality she acquired when training at the most stringent and challenging ballet school in the world.

Tala’s journey from Barnsley to the Bolshoi has been inspiring, beginning with joining a ballet class at four years old, “something fun to do as a hobby” she says - but Tala quickly showed talent and saw a future career in the art. “When I was 16 years old, my then dance teachers filmed and sent off an audition video of me to the Academy… I was accepted to train there from that video,” Tala recalls. Her success story should serve as an inspiration to anyone who sets their mind to something, that with hard work achievement, it is always possible. Having already achieved so much, we were interested to know what Tala will do next, since her esteemed balletic background has prepared her to take her career even further. “I have come to realise that the work I most enjoy being part of is diverse and multidisciplinary, and my ballet training has set me up well for that” she comments. Tala believes her South Yorkshire background has helped her develop an “alternative perspective” on classical ballet and also recognises the huge positive influence of family on her advancement as a dancer, believing that she has her Mum to thank for teaching her the fundamental lessons in life. “My Mum has been a huge inspiration for me and still is - I wouldn’t be where I am today without her,” Tala enthuses. “From her I have learnt how to work for what I believe in, how to be focused and determined, and how kindness is the most underrated but most powerful aspect of a character.” She now hopes to bring a “multifaceted female role” to life through No Time Like the Present, which no doubt will be inspired by her powerful maternal role model. Eventually, Tala would like to tour her productions nationally and internationally, which of course would be a treat for any audience to witness. 28 www.rmcmedia.co.uk

The COVID-19 pandemic brought Tala’s work as a freelance dancer to a halt, but, like in much of the music and arts industry, in the absence of performance came a metamorphosis of creation. The extra time on her hands allowed Tala to sit and consider her next steps, landing on the fact that she sought more agency and independence over her work. She says: “The seed was planted during the pandemic, when live performance was at a standstill and I was, like many folk, reflecting. “I considered the possibility that now might be time to take a risk, to grasp some creative autonomy that my career as a freelance dancer, always dancing other people’s work, had not yet afforded me. I decided to form my own production company, Tala Lee-Turton Productions, and No Time like the Present began to take shape.” Choosing to showcase the production outdoors was also inspired by the ‘new normal’ that the pandemic left in its wake, as Tala believes you cannot just stand still and stick with the status quo,

you must adapt to your surroundings, and that is where true innovation comes from. This step towards running her own train must be inevitably stressful and mean a great deal of new responsibility, but Tala says she loves a challenge. “If it ever gets too much, I bake a cake and binge Lord of the Rings,” she says – which I think is something we can all relate to. We in South Yorkshire are delighted that Tala has chosen to return to her home turf for a celebration of herself and her heritage, and even more delighted that we get to see it in the form of an exhilarating, entertaining performance.

Past, present and future WITH A HISTORY STRETCHING BACK ALMOST 1,000 YEARS, ECCLESFIELD NOW MARRIES THE BEST OF OLD AND NEW. he origins of the suburb of Ecclesfield, just four miles north of Sheffield city centre, can be traced all the way back to the Domesday Book of 1086. At this time it was referred to as ‘Eclesfeld’, the meaning of which is uncertain. Traditionally it has been derived from the Celtic ‘eggless’ meaning church, specifically a Romano-British one, and the old English ‘feld’, meaning a woodland clearing. Thus the name could mean “Open land near a RomanoBritish Christian church”. However, an alternative suggestion is that the first element ‘eccles’ derives from a Saxon personal name or an association with water. The Domesday Book does not mention a church at Ecclesfield. The present Church of St Mary, one of only five Grade I listed buildings in Sheffield, largely dates from the late 15th century, but incorporates features from about 1200. It was the centre of the ancient parish of Ecclesfield, which was one of the most extensive in England before it was broken up in the 19th century. Its style is Perpendicular, with a central tower, and it formerly bore the title of the “Minster of the Moors”. The Benedictine Ecclesfield Priory,

established in the 12th century, served as a cell of St Wandrille’s Abbey in Normandy until the 14th century, when it passed to the Carthusians. It is now a Grade II* listed building. During the First World War the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) established a relief landing ground just outside the eastern boundary of the village, on land that is now largely given over to an industrial estate, near to the current M1 motorway. ‘A’ flight of 33 Squadron used the site during 1916 as part of a Home Defence scheme to protect against Zeppelin raids, but as the threat of raids diminished the Ecclesfield landing site, along with several others in the area were decommissioned. No further flying has been recorded as having taken place. Today, Ecclesfield has an old square, a cricket club, a large park, the Gatty

Memorial Hall, a secondary school— Ecclesfield comprehensive School, previously Ecclesfield Grammar School – and Ecclesfield Primary School, as well as various shops and other civic amenities. On the border of Ecclesfield Parish – which incorporates the suburbs of Chapeltown, High Green and Grenoside – is Greno Wood, a forested area listed as Grade B on the English Nature Invertebrate Site Register, as of special archaeological and geological significance. The wood is managed by the Wildlife Trust for Sheffield and Rotherham. According to Zoopla, the average prices for homes in the S35 postcode stand at £310,228 (detached), £201,374 (semi-detached) and £159,928 (terraced).

Salt ‘n’ pepper stones ROSE CUT DIAMONDS HAVE BECOME POPULAR AGAIN AS CUSTOMERS SEARCH FOR SOMETHING DIFFERENT. ver the last few years rose cut diamonds and coloured gemstones have become increasingly popular. The style is often seen in stylish ‘salt n pepper’ diamonds and creates a look very different to the classic brilliant cut sparkle. Rose cut stones usually have a flat back and a domed front covered with triangular facets. The flat back means they sit lower than fully faceted stones making them fantastic for larger pendants or rings that can sit close to the finger. The many facets across the front of the stone showcase the lustre of the gem, twinkling as they catch the light. Originally popular in the 18th century, rose cut diamonds fell out of favour as developments in cutting techniques unlocked the dazzling sparkle of the brilliant cut diamond. Recently however, they have become more popular again as consumers search for something different. Essentially, ‘salt n pepper’ diamonds allow us to make use of diamond material that would not otherwise be suitable for faceting and setting in jewellery. The raw material is of lower colour and clarity than would be seen in traditional diamond jewellery, often with a black, grey or brown hue. Inclusions within the stones (typically crystals of other minerals trapped inside the stone as it formed or internal fractures known as feathers) create an attractive texture and shimmer. Diamonds have unparalleled bright lustre known as adamantine (diamond-like) and rose cut stones really show this off. Reflections from the surface are bright and eye-catching, with bold flashes completely different to the glitter of a brilliant cut stone. Other coloured gemstones can also be faceted as rosecuts. As with diamonds, material with lower clarity that otherwise may not be used can look fantastic in large, abstract shapes in bright and bold hues. Cutting such stones in this way shows off their best feature – the colour – as evidenced by the aquamarine and Tanzanite rings pictured. Tourmaline is a gemstone that forms in a wide variety of colours and also in parti-coloured stones with more than one hue. Where a good balance of colour occurs they can be cut to create an attractive display. Recently arrived into stock, the necklace pictured features a stone known as a watermelon tourmaline with green surrounding a pink centre. Subtle changes in the chemical environment as the crystal grows cause this change in colour that looks a bit like a slice of watermelon! Crystals are cut as slices to showcase this, and in this case finished with rose cut faceting to give a subtle twinkle as it catches the light. What’s all the fuss? All eyes are on Volkswagen’s latest addition to its ID range, writes Richard Abbey.

Extreme upgrade Alfa Romeo’s new Giulia and Stelvio ESTREMA models offer top of the range specification with the perfect combination of technical refinement, driving pleasure and sporting luxury. Targeted at driving purists, the ESTREMA builds on the Veloce and is fitted with Alfa Synaptic Dynamic Control (SDC) adaptive suspension and a limited slip differential as standard, adapting to conditions to provide comfort without compromising handling and driving pleasure. The limited slip differential provides stability and high control in all grip conditions, distributing torque and traction even when exiting corners, at high speeds and during acceleration. Both inside and out, carbon fibre and dark painted elements define the sporty look of the ESTREMA. The exterior features carbon fibre mirror caps and front ‘V’ grille, dark tone ESTREMA badging and five-hole, dark painted 19-inch alloy wheels on the Giulia and 21-inch wheels on the Stelvio. The long-awaited Volkswagen ID. Buzz will launch with a ‘1st Edition’ model alongside the standard Style and Life trims. All feature the 77kWh lithium-ion battery, supplying 150kW (204 PS) to a rear-mounted electric motor that develops 310Nm of torque and is capable of an all-electric driving range of up to 415km (258 miles).
