PROMOTIONVISUAL BATHROOMS Bathroom with a view...
When local architect Vanessa Bizzell needed a new bathroom for her family home, she turned to the experts at Visual Bathrooms – and was thrilled with the results. s an architect, I am naturally very picky when it comes to home improvements. I know from experience that it is hard to work with designers as we can be tricky and awkward and we question everything. After having a good hunt around and speaking to lots of bathroom companies, I chose Eric for the job because he really knew what he was talking about and seemed very trustworthy. He is also very passionate about what he does. I gave Eric a detailed list of requirements and he suggested the items that would fit my brief. His advice was really useful, particularly when choosing the laminate tops. I wanted the bathroom to last a good ten to 15 years so he guided us in the direction of some longer-lasting surfaces than I had originally picked, which I found really helpful. I saw Visual Bathrooms as a luxurious choice but Eric took my high budget aspirations and delivered a project that suited our budget. This included items by

Vitra, Bauhaus and Vado. Eric knows so much about his trade – I could have talked about taps with him for hours! I could have done the job myself by selecting all the products and arranging the fitting, but it had to be done quickly as we have three children and I work from home so we didn’t want to have too much disruption. It took two weeks, and most of the work was done in the first few days. The fitters David and Brad were great. They were very considerate of the children, which we really appreciated, and they completed the job to a really high standard. From both a professional and personal perspective, I have been very impressed with Visual Bathrooms and I have already recommended Eric and the team to some of my clients.” To discover how Visual Bathrooms can turn your ideas into reality, contact Eric on 0114 233 3032 or pop into the showroom on Holme Lane.
Eric launched Visual Bathrooms after many years in the plumbing trader and is therefore perfectly placed to understand all aspects of the trade. He is proud to work with prestigious bathroom companies such as Bauhaus, Crosswater, Dansani, Hansgrohe, Utopia, Vado, Vitra and Villery & Boch. He and his team specialise in turning dreams into reality by designing, supplying and fitting every aspect of your bathroom. They take great pride in their tidy, courteous service and create rooms that combine beautiful design with functionality to make the best of every space available.

SIXERDO YOU REMEMBER? t’s the pantomime season again (oh yes it is) and we’ve entered into the spirit of the occasion with our focus on Sheffield’s ‘grand dame’ Damian Williams. See page 66 for more details. Going to a big, professional panto is a big part of Christmas for many of us, but it’s hard to top a local amateur production for sheer unadulterated festive fun. The players in this production certainly seem to have entered into the spirit of the occasion…can anyone tell us where and when the photograph was taken? Keen-eyed local sports fans may have noticed that last month’s photograph, courtesy of Barry Couldwell, showed the Oughtibridge FC team. We’re still searching for the year, if anyone can enlighten us.

PROMOTIONMORFITT SMITH
THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS Estate agents Morfitt Smith are backing a campaign to bring festive cheer to some of South Yorkshire’s poorest youngsters. s we scour the shelves to grab the latest on-trend toy for our children or gift sets for the teenagers in our lives, spare a thought for those who will be waking up to no presents on Christmas Day. One in three children are living in poverty in South Yorkshire – that’s approximately 76,000 children – and this is why Morfitt Smith estate agents has teamed up with Hallam FM Cash For Kids to launch Mission Christmas. All you need to do to help support this cause is to buy one extra present this year. It can be anything from essentials such as clothes and bath sets to toys and entertainment – just make sure they are suitable gifts for newborns, babies, children or teenagers up to the age of 18. If you prefer, you can donate money either online, in person at Cash For Kids’ Herries Road head quarters or you can text HALLAM to 70808 to donate £5. Morfitt Smith are the official drop off point for your Christmas gift donations and with branches in Banner Cross, Hillsborough and Crookes, you’re never far from your local branch. Hundreds more local businesses have also signed up to become drop off points to make this year the best fundraiser yet. Every Morfitt Smith branch will also be promoting the campaign with a name the bear competition. To enter, just give the bear the best name you can think of and donate £1 to Mission Christmas. The bear will then be donated as a gift. Mission Christmas is an annual campaign, and as usual, the Hallam FM team will be out on their sleigh, spreading Christmas joy to the children of South Yorkshire, collecting gifts from the drop off points and getting involved in Christmas light switch-ons.
A
The Morfitt Smith team will also be getting into the Christmas spirit by helping out at the Cash For Kids head quarters, handing out presents in Christmas fancy dress costumes. The estate agents specialises in selling, but also rent properties all over Sheffield. Joint director and valuer John Morfitt has worked in property for over 30 years and spends much of his time visiting clients, whilst co-director Paul Batty is in charge of the day-to-day running of the branches. Together, they are dedicated to providing a warm welcome and a personal service. “Christmas is such a lovely time of year for bringing friends and families together and we all remember the excitement of waking up on Christmas morning to find out what presents we have, but not everyone is as fortunate,” says Paul. “Mission Christmas is such an important and worthy cause to ensure that every child has a smile on their face on Christmas morning.” Last year, Mission Christmas helped 17,000 disadvantaged and hospitalised children have a merry Christmas with approximately £750,000 worth of gifts. This year, the team are hoping to reach even more children. If you want to help a disadvantaged child this Christmas, drop your gifts into your local Morfitt Smith branch until Wednesday 23 December. For more information, call into one of their local branches. Alternatively, you can donate to Mission Christmas at www.hallamfm.co.uk/mission or text HALLAM to 70808 to donate £5. PROMOTIONCOLLECTIVE LEGAL SOLUTIONS
You need to take advice if…
Lasting Power of Attorney: the myth and the reality. any people have heard of a lasting power of attorney (previously an Enduring Power of Attorney), but they associate it with something you arrange later in life when you “start feeling iffy”. Here we will investigate some of the myths and realities surrounding mental incapacity and Lasting Power of Attorney.
M
MYTH: Mental incapacity is something that only affects people in later life through illnesses such as Alzheimer’s, so I don’t need to do anything just yet. REALITY Accident or illness can strike at any time, often without warning. The consequences of failing to plan can be significant, as outlined in this article. Why leave something so important to chance?
• You or your spouse/partner don’t yet have a Will. • You have a Will but it leaves everything to your spouse/partner.
MYTH: If I suffer an accident or illness, my spouse or children will automatically be able to take over the running of my affairs as my next of kin. REALITY: Your spouse or children have no automatic right to act on your behalf. Without a Lasting Power of Attorney, they will be required to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as your Deputy – a long, complex, costly and intrusive process.
• You don’t have both kinds of Lasting Powers of Attorney set up. • You or your spouse/partner don’t have a pre-paid Funeral Plan.
MYTH: I can simply add my spouse or children to my bank accounts, as a joint account holder would just carry on as normal in the event of my mental incapacity. REALITY: Banks are guided by the British Bankers’ Association to freeze both solely and jointly held accounts where one account holder loses mental capacity (they may allow pre-authorised payments).
• You are divorced or widowed. • You have children.
MYTH: When creating a Lasting Power of Attorney, it’s best to appoint my spouse and children to act together jointly. REALITY: Many poorly advised individuals have fallen into this trap. Appointing family jointly means they must act together in all matters, rendering the Lasting Power of Attorney useless when one of the appointed family can’t act – incapacity or death is not an excuse!
• You are concerned about what will happen and covering the costs if you need long term residential care.
MYTH: If anything happens to me and a decision needs to be made about life sustaining treatment, the doctor will automatically follow the wishes of my next of kin. REALITY: Only through a Lasting Power of Attorney can you give the people you trust the right to make choices about your health and welfare, including the ability to refuse lifesustaining treatment if you wish. A Lasting Power of Attorney is often likened to an insurance policy – you hope you’ll never need it, but your family will be very grateful for your foresight if you do. It’s the only way to have your say about who you trust to manage your affairs and make things as simple as possible for your loved ones.

PROMOTIONSHEFFIELD WINDOW CENTRE
LEFT: Joe Hunter in the factory
CONTINUING SUCCESS When a local business achieves 40 years of continuous trading it is a milestone worth celebrating... so let’s pop a few corks and say ‘cheers’ as we toast the continuing success story that is Sheffield Window Centre. t was way back in 1975, when Rubik’s Cubes were all the rage and Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen topped the charts, that the company was founded. Fast forward 40 years and Ian Hunter, who took over the running of Sheffield Window Centre (SWC) in the early eighties, is managing director... and with all his four grown-up children also involved, this is a true family business. You don’t last that long in the same city unless you receive consistently excellent feedback from satisfied customers – and as the decades have rolled by, generations of Sheffield folk have found SWC to be the first, and most reliable, name they look for. SWC was also the first Sheffield business to be given Trusted Trader status by Which?, a nationwide consumer champion website that not only tests products from washing machines to power tools, but also gives local companies a rigorous assessment before naming only the very best on their online directory of recommended trades people. Of course, there have been big changes since 1975 and SWC has stayed at the very top by investing in new machinery, adopting green policies, and constantly researching methods of production to provide the most up-to-date levels of security and thermal efficiency. The one thing that hasn’t changed, and never will, is their “old fashioned” approach to selling. SWC is renowned for its ‘No Pressure Policy’ – leaving customers to decide in their own time. Whether it be price, product, or service – they can’t be beaten and that’s the reason they never need to push or pester. The company, which has premises on Oakbrook Road, Broad Lane, Scotland Street and Rockingham Street, uses top brand REHAU – a market leader in polymer extrusion – for all their installations. Their multi-chambered profile uPVC doesn’t warp or discolour like so many lesser brands. And if you’re worried you won’t be able to get a frame to match your desired colour or design, don’t be. Frames come in a variety of coloured foils, including cream, black, grey and green, as well as A family affair... L-R: Ian, Sam, Amy and Ian Hunter several wood grain

colours including rosewood and oak. You can also have your frames sprayed to match any RAL colour – so you’ll have new windows that look exactly how you want them to. Good-looking windows are no good if you can still feel the chill – but thanks to SWC, you won’t feel a thing. Their standard windows have energy efficiency ratings of A, while their standard double-glazed units are made from Pilkington’s KS glass, are argon-filled and incorporate a warm edge spacer bar to retain the heat in your home. It’s not just about staying cosy, though – energy efficient windows can help you to make big savings on your heating bill. Perhaps the most important thing you want from a window is to know that it’s secure, that it will keep would-be thieves successfully at bay. SWC’s windows are fitted with a multi-point shoot bolt locking mechanism – the best there is. They also fit antijemmy devices on all vulnerable opening windows – so you’ve got the peace of mind of knowing that you’ll be as safe as possible. Don’t be misled by the name, by the way – SWC do more than just windows. They offer an expert stained glass service and fascias and soffits, as well as high-quality doors. These all have Hoppe Security handles fitted as standard – approved by the police, no less – as well as cylinder locks which are anti-pick, drill, snap and bump and again have a multi-point locking system. There’s more, too – specifically, conservatories. Due to the advances in glass specification, SWC can now provide conservatories, which are suitable for year-round use, thanks to glass which has been specifically designed for the purpose. It offers a wide range of benefits including thermal insulation with solar control, glare reduction, enhanced sound insulation and selfcleaning properties. The company can also install underfloor heating and laminated floors, as well as taking care of the building, plastering and electrical work, so you only deal with one point of contact throughout the entire process. Get in touch with Sheffield Window Centre today – they care about your windows, doors and conservatories just as much as you do. INDUSTRIAL COOL The developing areas of Kelham Island and Neepsend are far removed from their Victorian origins – and positively thriving. s an industrial hub turned ale trail, Kelham Island and Neepsend is a beer lover’s dream come true. There is much more to the area than old redbrick factories and traditional pubs, but they are both very good places to start. Delve into the thin cobbled side streets of Kelham Island and you’ll find signs and buildings brimming with history. The 19th century brought about the first great industrial changes to the area with the construction of a number of factories and the harnessing of the river and railway to help transport materials. Neepsend Engine Shed was built to supply and overhaul locomotives for the nearby Sheffield Victoria railway station. The Neepsend railway station was opened in 1888, but closed to passengers in 1940. The Sandbed Wheel, part of the Sandbed Tilt Company, was constructed on the River
Don and further development continued when the Neepsend Tannery was opened in 1821. With great numbers of factories came great numbers of residents. This included The Parkwood Springs district, which was developed as a housing area in the 1860s for railway employees. After the devastation of World Wars I and II, Neepsend was designated as an area for industry by Sheffield City Council, and its resident population was greatly reduced. However, Kelham Island has had a huge resurgence of housing developments in recent years with brand new student flats and yesterday’s factories becoming today’s city loft conversion homes. As a result, many eateries, pubs, shops and businesses in the area have thrived, breathing new life into both Neepsend and Kelham Island. The area, with its charming

traces of historical Sheffield, has become an alternative destination for shoppers and drinkers. Home to Kelham Island Brewery and tucked away from the city centre clubbers, the area is the perfect get away for those wanting a more relaxed drinking session on a Saturday night. Start your bar crawl at Kelham Island Tavern, wander round the corner to The Fat Cat, then follow the road towards the river Don where you’ll find The Riverside and The Harlequin. From here you can delve deeper into the industrial heart of Neepsend by visiting the Gardeners Rest or head towards the city centre by crossing the dual carriageway to The Shakespeare. Meanwhile, The Ship Inn on Shalesmoor, one of the area’s oldest traditional pubs, has been refurbished and now specialises in craft ales. Although there is a warm and welcoming pub scene in this area, Kelham Island and Neepsend has much more to offer than its nightlife. Head over to Shalesmoor, where you can peruse the gorgeous antiques, vintage clothes and quirky trinkets at The Nichols Building, buy some edgy clothes designed by the singer of Sheffield rock band Bring Me The Horizon from Drop Dead Clothing of Rutland Road or take a bottle of ale home from the Kelham Island Brewery Shop. If you’re more concerned with home improvements, there are a number of bathroom and kitchen specialists in the area including AC Bathrooms and Heating just off Rutland Road. Take a short trip up the road and you’ll find Norton’s who supply a gorgeous range of cookers and stoves including AGAs. Whether you are a DIY whizz or a trade

customer, Sheffield Supplies have a warehouse providing kitchen worktops, handles and doors. As winter sets in, our thoughts turn to ways of making our homes more energy efficient. Acorn Windows just off Hillfoot Road supply and install double glazed windows and doors to keep out the cold. Neepsend and Kelham is also an interesting and surprisingly scenic place to go for a walk. Follow the trail off Rutland Road and take in the greenery and wildlife around Parkwood Springs, take an urban stroll along the River Don or spot the sculptures and colourful street art by artists including Phlegm around Shalesmoor and at The House Skatepark. While you’re there, why not take the kids for a skate and have a drink at The House’s coffee bar? The Kelham Island district was one of Sheffield’s most important early industrial areas and houses the Kelham Island Museum, where you can find out more about Sheffield’s industrial past and The Chimney House which has become an iconic building and a great venue to hire for various events. After all that sightseeing, you’ll have worked up an appetite and there are plenty of places to eat around the museum, from pubs serving traditional food to more contemporary restaurants such as Craft and Dough, Urban ¼ and Little Mesters Café and Bistro. So whether you want a bite to eat and a night out around the cosy pubs, need to make some home improvements or just want an interesting and historical walk in the industrial heart of Sheffield, Kelham Island and Neepsend has much to offer day or night.

PROMOTIONCAMPBELL HOMES
Roof top gardens and solar panels above the garages. The allotment area is in the background
Campbell Homes and Wake Smith joined forces to transform a former Loxley factory site into a modern, eco-friendly housing development. ake Smith has provided the legal advice for a unique green-fingered residential development on a derelict site in Sheffield – which furnishes each home with an allotment plot. Regional residential developer Campbell Homes has taken the two-acre derelict site at Loxley Works on Low Matlock Lane in Loxley and transformed the former steel rolling mill into 11 new two and three-bedroom houses. Each property has an allocated garage, a parking space and a rear garden and also a large separate allotment plot giving the owners an opportunity to achieve a more self-sufficient way of living by growing their own fruit and vegetables. Solicitors at Wake Smith worked with Hillsborough-based South Yorkshire developer Gary Campbell on the unique ecostyle development providing property transaction work for the £300,000 brownfield site. Damien Donnelly, director in Wake Smith’s commercial property team said:“I acted for Campbell Homes on the site acquisition last year, development finance, the appropriate electricity deed of easement and the forward selling agreements of the individual properties, nine of which have already been sold. “There are many legal considerations and frameworks to taking a brownfield site through to an eco-style residential development such as this. One of the requirements of planning specified by Sheffield City Council was the provision of the allotments space and communal gardens on the site which was a former factory. “It has been an extremely popular development in a lovely

location with the homes being priced realistically hence the quick sales.” Two homes remain available on the development, priced at £315,000 and £205,000, which has taken 15 months from the purchase of the land to handing over the keys to the new residents. Gary Campbell said: “Our latest innovative venture has brought an old local landmark back into use by providing quality homes in a fantastic setting. “I have worked with Damien at Wake Smith for a number of years and he provides a very comprehensive service. While I am managing the workload of a developer, I am confident that all the legal details are being taken care of, so that I can work to achievable timescales on innovative projects like this.” Solar panels on the garage roofs at Loxley Works also contribute to the eco-friendly feel of the development, designed by Sheffield architects Coda. Campbell Homes Ltd has been building and restoring homes in the Sheffield City Region since 1994, and has built an extensive portfolio of over 800 homes to date, ranging from apartments to detached houses, conversions to listed buildings. Other Campbell Homes developments include Loxley House, the former Sea Cadets building on Ben Lane, Loxley; the former Dial House Working Men’s Club on Ben Lane, Wadsley; and The Old Mill at Wadsley Bridge and a 66 apartment development at Gleadless. Councillor Terry Fox, Sheffield City Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport, said: “It is great to see houses with allotment plots included, enabling the residents to grow their own fresh fruit and vegetables. Every initiative of this kind contributes to improving the environment and encouraging people to eat healthy diets.” Sheffield has more than eight privately managed allotment sites. Sheffield City Council manages approximately 70 allotment sites with a total of 3,000 plots.

SIXERSNAPSHOTS
Welcome To My Office – Views from the rooftops Simon Slater of Slater’s Aerial Services has a different ‘office view’ to most of us – a rooftop vista of Sheffield. This month, he has been admiring the view in a very different part of the world. Can you guess which popular holiday island Simon was on when he took this photo? To be in with a chance of winning a Christmas hamper, send your answers to the Slater’s Aerials Facebook page at www.facebook.com/slaters.aerials, email them to slatersaerials@aol.com or post your answers to Slater’s Aerial Services, Lee Moor Lane, Sheffield, S6 6GY. To find out where in the world Simon is, follow @SlatersAerials and @SixerRMC on Twitter – the answer will be revealed at the end of the month. All correct entries will be entered into the Christmas draw and pulled out at random. Congratulations to those of you who guessed where Simon was in last month’s pictures – Oldfield Road, Stannington.

Bradfield Church has poppy appeal Last month, a huge crowd of spectators came out to see the poppy installation at St Nicholas’ Church in High Bradfield to commemorate hundreds of locals who died in World War One, World War Two and up to the present day. The “floating red poppies” were unveiled on St Nicholas’ Church Sunday 1 November (All Saints Day) by Lord Mayor in High Bradfield of Sheffield, Councillor Talib Hussain. The installation was part of the Poppy Memorial Trail, a massive undertaking which saw the church’s war memorials and war graves becoming the cornerstones of a memorial walkway made up of thousands of memories of lost loved ones written on red plaques. The installation designed by Sue Hague of Pinkdotinc Design, remained illuminated until Sunday 8 November and closed with a Remembrance Day or The Lord May e service at the church. switches on th

THE FUTURE OF ADVERTISING When it came to designing their latest advert, Powers Martial Arts had something different in mind... and turned to Wharncliffe Side Primary School for help. Stephanie Burns reports. ere at Sixer, we have a great team of designers who spend hours each day creating many of the adverts you see in the pages of our magazine. From fashion boutiques to kitchen companies, mechanics to hairdressers – and many more businesses besides – we promote all aspects of life in S6 through their eye-catching designs. Every now and then, we like to spice things up a little and offer our advertising clients the opportunity to get on board with something new. And so it was that, with the encouragement of local business owner Paul Powers, we approached one of the region’s primary schools to request their help with a very special competition. Sixer’s publishing manager Simon Moreman asked Year 5 and Year 6 pupils of Wharncliffe Side Primary School to put their artistic skills to the test by designing an advert for Paul’s company, Powers Martial Arts. The response, as echoed by the class teacher Nigel Hartley, was fantastic. “Simon briefed the children on what was required and then we basically left them to it,” said Nigel. “My class is very good at working independently – using iPads and the materials in the classroom to research and find ideas. One or two of the pupils are also interested in martial arts so they were able to use their own knowledge of the sport.

“I passed the drawings to 15 of our clients and they selected the top three. These designs covered everything I would want in an advert.” – Paul Powers “They all really enjoyed taking part in the task and using their imagination. It was really nice for them to complete a brief set by an actual business, rather than simply doing a piece of work to be displayed in the school.” The only downside to this enthusiasm and the brilliant standard of work the pupils produced was that Paul had to pick a winner. “I was so impressed with the work the kids put in,” he enthused. “Some looked like they had spent hours making them and the thought that went in was just incredible.” After much deliberation and eventually being unable to pick just one winner from the 29 entries, Paul decided to enlist the help of his clients. “I passed the drawings to 15 of our clients and they selected the top three. These designs covered everything I would want in an advert.” As a thank you for taking part, Paul has offered each of the three winners – Year 6 pupils Ella Andrews, Ella Wright and George Lucas – a private lesson worth £25, which they can share with a friend if they wish. The rest of the class have also been invited to enjoy an hour-long kick boxing lesson with one of their champions. “We really appreciate all the effort that has been put in to the entries,” said Paul. “And we’d like to thank the children for giving us some great ideas for our future advertising.”

PROMOTIONHEALTHBEDS
Generations of know-how means that the experts at Healthbeds can help you get the perfect night’s sleep. hen we are short on sleep, everything suffers – memory, concentration, job, relationships. Anyone who has had a poor night’s sleep knows how essential those all-important hours of shuteye are and how, without them, the next day can be torture. There can be many reasons for a poor night’s sleep, but the main culprit is often a mattress which is old and not providing the right kind of support. This can cause restlessness, aches and pains. Also, the type of support we need changes as we get older, and what was once comfortable in our 20s may not be so in our 30s and 40s, and so on. Another cause of poor sleep is the house dust mite. These tiny, microscopic creatures, found in even the cleanest of homes, love to make their home in mattresses and can trigger asthma, eczema and dustThe Smeaton family related allergies. The good news is that at Healthbeds in Rotherham, many of their mattresses are treated with anti-dust mite protection (ADP) which helps to ensure a dust mite-free mattress, right to the deepest fibres. Since 1893 the Smeaton family, the founders and owners of Healthbeds, have been helping people to enjoy a more restful and healthier night's sleep. This caring family business spans four generations and their reputation has been built on an unswerving commitment to quality, exacting standards and traditional craftsmanship. traditional skills that have been passed down from generation to generation, which ensure that Healthbeds are traditionally made and expertly built. Using only the finest materials, each bed is individually produced and quality-tested at every stage of production, to the highest standard and specification in their state-of-the-art, purpose-built factory. All of Healthbeds’ models focus on optimum comfort and support, and finding the perfect balance and sleeping position is affected by your size, shape and weight. When lying on your side the spine should be horizontal, with the mattress supporting you head to toe without any pressure points, if you need any help or advice on which mattress is best suited to you, just ask a friendly member of staff, who will be happy to help. As well as ultimate comfort, all models also conform to the most stringent flame resistance regulations and are put through Healthbeds’ own control and inspection procedures, so you can be assured of top-quality protection in health and safety.

SIXERPANTO
DAME FOR A LAUGH Pantomime season is back and sees Damian Williams return to the Lyceum to cause chaos – and (hopefully) lots of laughs. Words: Fiona Barber utch, bold and boisterous; Damian Williams has been causing slapstick chaos on the Lyceum stage as a panto dame for the last seven years. This festive season, his reign continues as he plays Widow Twankey in the fun-packed family pantomime, Aladdin. The demand for pantomime seems to be as strong as ever (last year’s Dick Whittington was seen by over 44,000 people) and Damian believes they remain so popular because it is something the whole family can be involved in. “It is great entertainment and a great family Christmas tradition,” he says.“No other country has got pantomime, and we’re the only ones that do it well, because we’re the only ones that really understand it. A panto is often the first time kids will ever go to a theatre, so it’s quite important.” Damian recalls his Nan taking him to the theatre as a young boy. They went to see Robinson Crusoe with Charlie Drake in it. “I was only five or six but I still remember some of the gags and what the dame did, so it made a big impression,” he admits. Theatre was always something he was interested in and Damian’s first taste of the limelight came aged just 15, in a Bugsy Malone production at his local theatre. This marked the beginning of a long and successful career. He explains: “The guy that directed it ran a rep company and he said to me: when you leave school, if you’d like to go into the business, don’t go to drama school, come and join the rep company and we’ll go on tour. I was taught by him, by watching other actors and I learnt my craft that way. In my first panto when I was 16, I played the ghost in the ghost gag and then after that I started playing villains. I played villains for years and then I got offered the chance to play a dame.” Damian admits the villain is a great role to play, but he prefers the dame because of his love of comedy. “You can go in and cause chaos and get the laughs,” he says. “The thing I like about playing a dame is that you can have contact with the audience and you can be on their side. I like to play it as though I’m part of
B
66 SIXER MAGAZINE
the audience and you know, you can get away with murder.” Of course, no dame would be complete without a set of fabulous outfits and Damian confesses he has over 100 costumes stored away, which he describes as a playground of wigs, feathers and slippers. To make sure Widow Twankey was dressed for the performance of a lifetime, earlier in the year Damian met with Helga Wood, who designs and makes the costumes, to discuss what they had in store. While dames and designers might spend months planning costumes, Damian admits that wardrobe malfunctions are simply unavoidable and says: “I’ve had things fall down, pop off and things split, but you just get on with it.” While the dame role has been a major part of Damian’s acting career for 20 years, he has also been involved in many other productions and acknowledges playing his all-time favourite comedian Tommy Cooper in Being Tommy Cooper was a particular highlight. “I like all the old-school comics like Tommy Cooper, Les Dawson, Morecambe and Wise,” he says. “I was brought up on people like Laurel and Hardy; they were funny, funny men and that’s very rare these days. People like Lee Evans come quite close to that style but you don’t get that anymore; it’s less physical.” This physical comedy is very much still part of panto and Damian confirms there will be plenty of slosh and mess in this year’s Aladdin. He has been involved in a great number of pantos including Peter Pan, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, Dick Whittington, Jack and The Bean Stalk and Aladdin, but he says there is still one he has yet to tick off. “I would love to do Mother Goose here. We have talked about it, so I’m hoping in the next few years we’ll be able to do it.” You can see Damian and the rest of the cast – including Chris Gascoyne (Peter Barlow from Coronation Street), Alex Winter (CBeebies), and writer and entertainer Hilary O’Neil – in this year’s spectacular production at the Lyceum from 4 December until 3 January.

PROMOTIONMALIN BRIDGE INN
The warm welcome at the Malin Bridge Inn has not gone unnoticed as they have justed been crowned Enterprise Community Heroes. hen it’s cold outside, there’s nothing better than getting snug in your cosy, local pub. And at the Malin Bridge Inn, you can be sure you will be met with a warm welcome too. Landlady Jill Marston-Revitt gives her new customers the same friendly greeting as her regulars and always relishes the chance to give newcomers a tour of the place. “Everyone is genuinely welcome here,” says Jill. “We have a hard-working team and great customers who make it all worth while. I’ve been here nearly 20 years and I still love my job.” And if their many thank-you cards for past charity events are anything to go by, Jill and her team genuinely care for the people in their community too. The Malin Bridge Inn has put on a number of fundraising events over the years, for St Luke’s Hospice and Macmillan Palliative Care amongst others. Jill has even given her hair the chop for charity – twice. So, it’s only right that the pub was crowned the regional winner of the Enterprise Community Heroes award 2015, in recognition of all their hard work in the area. Jill and her team were awarded £3,000, which they have chosen to donate to the nearby Limbrick Centre, which helps those with mental health issues. “We all know people living with learning difficulties or mental health issues, so it is something that effects everyone,” says Jill. With Christmas just around the corner, you can also expect a number of exciting events at Malin Bridge Inn. Come and enjoy a mulled wine, mulled cider or hot

The sleigh bar is also open on Christmas Eve, so come celebrate the festive season in style. Or better yet, why not book out the pub’s function room? The fully decorated winter wonderland features its own bar, seating area and stage. The room is available for wedding, christening and birthday bookings in the New Year too. If the bar’s Christmas tipples don’t take your fancy, try their selection of bottled beers and Bradfield Brewery ales on tap, or give tasty cocktails such as the Gin Bramble, Rasberry Mojito or Strawberry Woo Woo a go. If you’re after a hearty meal, there’s no shortage of delicious food being cooked up in the kitchen by Jill’s husband Steve. Spice up your life with their Mexican or Curry Nights on Fridays or come for a Sunday lunch with all the trimmings. Whether you want a quiet drink, a lively night or a bite to eat this Christmas, you’ll find a welcoming and family-friendly atmosphere at the Malin Bridge Inn. SIXEREATING OUT
Lunch at The Schoolrooms is an indulgent treat, writes Stephanie Burns. From left: Matthew Hurt, Hannah Quarmby, James Grey and Laney Smith Photography: Stephanie Burns
TOP OF THE CLASS t this time of year, a mere break in the clouds is enough to warrant a dash into the countryside – let alone a full blazing sun. So when a mild lunchtime presented itself, we jumped in the car and headed out to Bradfield to see if one of its well-loved businesses really was as good as we’d heard. Since The Schoolrooms’ original managers took charge again earlier this year, the café/deli/butchery has once again been winning rave reviews for its local menu that is almost entirely made by hand by head chef James Grey and sous Laney Smith. Out front, Matthew Hurt and Hannah Quarmy provide a friendly and welcoming service. It was the last Friday of half term when we visited and we were lucky to get a seat in the bustling café, which can be found in the eves of the former school. Looking round, our fellow diners were enjoying the weekly special of fish and chips – complete with tartare sauce, pea puree and lemon wedge – for just £5. At almost half the usual price, this is an absolute steal, but we couldn’t help being tempted by some of the menu’s other offerings. It was the steak and Bradfield Brewery ale pie that caught my partner’s eye. Served with seasonal veg, fat chips and rich gravy, and accompanied by a glass of Argentinian Malbec, he made sure this lunchtime treat was as indulgent as possible. With tender meat, a wonderfully crisp puff pastry lid and seriously good chips, the dish was a real hit. I chose a lighter option; the daily deli board. The chunky wooden board came laden with homemade ham hock terrine, three artisan cheeses, half a Toppings pork pie, real ale chutney, a tiny Kilner jar of

pickled onion, salad with shards of crisp prosciutto, and two thick slices of fresh brown bloomer – most of which is sourced from the deli and butchery downstairs. Every element was great but the star of the show was that terrine; full of flavour and absolutely delicious. To complete the experience, my partner ordered the gooey caramel chocolate fondant, served warm with vanilla Peak District ice cream. It was a fantastic end to his hearty meal and he took great pleasure in scraping every last crumb from the bowl. Meanwhile, I had turned my attentions to the counter’s tantalising selection of fresh cakes, tray bakes and biscuits. I can never resist a fruit scone and when it’s served with Tiptree raspberry jam and light-as-air whipped cream – all the better. As we left, we passed a group of walkers who were basking in the autumn sun out on the terrace, taking full advantage of the unseasonably warm weather. Given the standard of the food at The Schoolrooms, I won’t be waiting for another burst of sunshine to return. Come rain or shine – it’s well worth a visit.

SIXERFOOD & DRINK
PERFECT COMBINATION The clamour for craft beer continues... Napoleons Owlerton hosted a masterclass in matching food and ale. Chris Wilson reports. hen it comes to matching drinks with food, you really can’t do better than a refreshing glass of ale. The old clichés about wine being upmarket and beer being the poor man’s thirst quencher are nothing more than outdated snobbery. That is the view of Martin Shillitoe, a man on a mission to convince people that once the dinner menu has been decided, the next logical step is to find a selection of beers to complement the flavours on the plate. “There are so many flavours and aromas, so many different styles of lagers and ales, you can find a beer to match any food. There is simply far more choice than you get with wine,” he says. You could say that being employed by one of the world’s biggest breweries (Molson Coors) means he has a vested interest, but after attending a beer tasting dinner at Napoleons Owlerton that was hosted by Martin, it is fair to say he has a very persuasive argument. With four courses of food and a beer specially selected to match each one, Martin was on hand throughout the evening to explain the beautiful simplicity of the brewing process and how the simple combination of four ingredients – water, barley, hops and yeast – can create such a wide range of flavours. First up was Cornish Pilsner from the Sharp’s brewery in Cornwall. Voted best lager at the World Beer Awards, this light but crisp beer was chosen to cut through

the fattiness of a smoked trout pate, and it worked a treat. Next came Rebel Red, an Irish red ale from the Franciscan Well brewery in County Cork. Served up with a corned beef hash croquette and brown sauce, it was certainly robust enough to match the big flavours on the plate, particularly the tangy sauce. After sampling two unfamiliar ales, I was on safer territory with Martin’s third choice of Erdinger, a German wheat beer, to accompany the main course of roast chicken and champ potatoes. This unfiltered, citrus-scented brew is a favourite of mine, always a welcome refreshing drop, and proved to be a good match for a hearty, but not too heavy, main course. So far so good, but I was not so sure I’d enjoy our final selection – Timmermans peach beer, selected by Martin to accompany a candied ginger and ginger nut cheesecake. I’ve tasted a few fruit beers and come to the conclusion that after a couple of mouthfuls they are just too sweet. This one seemed to fall into the same category, but after tasting the pudding and then returning to the beer, it was suddenly sharp and refreshing. “Ginger and peach is a perfect combination,” said Martin. He’s not wrong. Even if I was drinking wine with the rest of a meal, I’d take this at the conclusion over the usual Australian ‘sticky’ any day. If I had any doubts about finding a beer to match any type of food, this final winning combination sealed the argument.

PROMOTIONROSE & CROWN INN
The affectionately named ‘Minnie’s’ is already causing a stir in Stannington, writes Phoebe Seymour. he Rose & Crown Inn has been at the heart of Stannington village life for many years, with locals lovingly nicknaming the pub ‘Minnie’s’ after a longstanding and much-loved former landlady. However, some locals are still unaware of the amazing dining deals on offer. Over the past 18 months, landlord Tom Mosley and his team have been building on the success of their predecessors. They have been working on their food menus by listening to customer feedback and have recently revamped their evening menu. From firm favourites such as gourmet pies, beer-battered cod and fish pie, to their varied two-for-£5 lunchtime menu and a traditional Sunday carvery, there is something to suit everyone. Beat the post-Christmas blues with two meals and a bottle of wine for £19.95 from Mondays to Fridays throughout January, or book your place for the pub’s Crooner Night on 20 February. The Crooner Night will provide a fantastic late-Valentine’s Day celebration, with a gorgeous Italian menu and crooners performing classics by the likes of Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra. The pub will also be continuing their monthly live music nights on Saturdays and regular quiz nights on Thursdays and Sundays. As a Stannington resident himself, Tom started at the Rose &
T
Crown as a glass collector from the age of 14, before working his way up to management and taking over the pub as landlord in February 2013. With separate rooms for diners and drinkers, as well as a function room for parties, The Rose & Crown Inn is a venue for every occasion. Look out for guest chef nights on Saturdays in the New Year, offering different styles of cooking and a variety of cuisines. Come for their carvery on Sundays from 12pm, enjoy their two-for-£5 lunches on weekdays from 12pm until 3pm or try their delicious evening menu weekdays from 6pm until 9pm. After an extremely busy 3 years at Holme Lane in Hillsborough, it was decided that a move to larger premises was needed to accommodate its ever expanding business and staff team. A move from a main road was a hard one to make, but 70% of our work comes from recommendation, the other 30% from the internet, and 2 months after the move into our new office, this has still proved to be the case. The new office is airy and light, with inspiration and thoughts for the deceased love ones to be found in every room and corner of the building. The new chapel of rest is a particularly peaceful place and every piece of furniture has been upcycled from our old office, repainted or refurbished to give it a new look, without the cost of buying new items, proving that you can make a place look beautiful and still maintain costs. This is the main reason our funeral costs can still be kept as low as possible, our commitment to the fair funeral pledge is testament to this. Our straight to crematorium service currently stands at £1560.00, and can be attended by close family members (no service), but this allows them to say goodbye in a way that best suits them. Our basic service is £2050 (cremation only), no other costs to pay, and a colourful coffin depicting the clients life, or something special about them, with the hearse and a limousine is fully inclusive at £2800.00 (cremation only). The price remains the same for a wicker coffin, which also prove to be very popular. Steve and the team pride themselves on the level of service they offer, we believe in acting in our clients best interests at all times.

BITS & PIECES Local salon raises money for Weston Park Hospital
A local hair salon in Stannington has raised £1,045.12 for the Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity. Nicky Biggin, a stylist at Lew Burgin’s hair salon, was diagnosed with breast cancer in May 2015. After receiving fantastic care and support from the team at Weston Park Hospital, Nicky, husband Jason and their family decided to take part in a charity Night Walk. It wasn’t long before Nicky’s colleagues got involved by organising a coffee morning at the salon to raise funds as well. The coffee morning took place on Monday 28 September and raised £397.12, whilst Nicky and her family raised an impressive £648 for the Night Walk around Ecclesall Woods on Saturday 3 October. “We would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who donated to the coffee morning, with special thanks to Our Cow Molly for donating the milk, and to everyone who sponsored us for the Night Walk,” said Nicky’s daughter Charis Haywood. This year the Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity needs to raise £1.8million to help support cancer research, treatment and care. To donate or to find out how you can get involved, visit: www.wphcancercharity.org.uk.

Scores of schools to join sculpture stampede Arty pupils are getting ready to make their mark by signing up to take part in the Herd of Sheffield sculpture trail. The Herd of Sheffield will bring more than 40 giant elephant sculptures to the parks, streets and open spaces of Sheffield between July and September 2016. More than 50 schools will join the event by creating their own miniature trail, Little Herd, set to go on display two weeks before the larger sculptures hit the streets. The Little Herd invites schools to design a 73cm tall elephant as part of a cross-curricular education programme created by event organisers Wild in Art and The Children’s Hospital Charity. Bradfield School were first to sign up. Head of art Sarah Drabble has worked with artists including Joseph Hillier on arts commissions for the school, and jumped at the chance to be involved in the Little Herd. After the Herd of Sheffield finishes in September 2016, the schools will collect their designed elephant to keep. The larger elephants, which are sponsored by businesses, will be auctioned off to raise money for The Children’s Hospital Charity. To find out about how your business can sponsor an elephant, please email clare@herdofsheffield.com or call 0114 271 7203.
Webpage raises funds for stem cell treatment Friends and family of Cystic Fibrosis sufferer Blaire are rallying support from the community to raise a whopping £50,000 for a lifechanging stem cell treatment. The response has been incredible, with Blaire’s Go Fund Me Page raising over £3,500 in 48 hours, but there is still a long way to go. Cystic Fibrosis is a genetic illness causing an over-production of thick mucus which shuts down vital organs, meaning most sufferers require transplants. Blaire had a liver transplant at the age of 11, but was sadly deemed unfit for a lung transplant in 2013. Blaire’s only hope of improving her quality of life is to undergo stem cell treatment. However, the treatment is not available on the NHS and costs £50,000. Blaire is organising a number of fundraising events to help raise money and recently organised a Christmas Fayre and Family Fun Day at Wadsley Church. The event took place on Sunday 6 December and featured appearances from Father Christmas and Disney characters. To keep up to date with Blaire’s Story or to make a donation, visit: www.gofundme.com/WhileIbreatheIhope, follow her on Twitter at @BlairesStory or visit her Facebook Page: Blaire’s Story; I breathe, I hope.

Local writer publishes book about famous comedy duo
Peter Storey, a writer from Stannington, has recently self-published a book about comedy duo Charters and Caldicott. First appearing on British cinema screens in 1938, characters Charters and Caldicott are amongst film history’s most famous comedy duos. From their first appearance in Hitchcock’s The Lady Vanishes, the characters hit a resonance with cinema goers with their charming notes of sarcasm and dry humour. This initial popularity resulted in the two characters being reunited in several films throughout the 1940s and early 1950s. Full of British idiosyncrasies from a bygone era, the two cricket lovers are sticklers for upholding proper standards of dress, decorum and behaviour; no matter where they are or what predicament they find themselves in. Charters and Caldicott – As War Begins covers the period in Charters’ and Caldicott’s screen life between 1938 and 1943, covering their first four film appearances – The Lady Vanishes, Night Train To Munich, Crook’s Tour and Millions Like Us. Charters and Caldicott: As War Begins by Peter Storey is available from Amazon priced £8.99 in paperback and £3.99 on Kindle.
School creates own sculpture park After a recent visit to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Class two children at Wharncliffe Side Primary School were inspired to create their own mini sculpture park in the school’s woodland. The pupils have spent the autumn term learning about sculptures and have been fascinated by the works of a number of famous sculptors including Anthony Gormley and Auguste Rodin. The school’s sculpture park was officially opened by local sculptor Paul Widdows. Paul recently completed his latest sculpture, The Dragon of Wantley and invited the class to see his impressive smoke-breathing, steel dragon as a community link to their own work on sculptures in school. Class five got involved by making over 200 salt dough poppies to replicate the poppy installation at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park. The poppies were displayed and the older children recited the poem, In Flanders Field as part of the school’s commemorations for Armistice Day. One parent said: “It is lovely how all children across the school were able to display their work side-by-side and having a talented local sculptor officially open the school’s unique sculpture park was the icing on the cake.”
