Bring colour to your home this Christmas
eason’s greetings and welcome to the December issue of Sixer. Have you got your tree up yet? When it comes to decorations it’s easy to go over the top – and this year you’re being encouraged to as bold and bright colours are set to dominate houses all over the country. Food (and drink) plays a huge part in any festive celebration. With that in mind we spoke to chocolatier Cocoa Spink who makes gorgeous – and tasty – gifts and have our monthly beer and wine columns. Keeping things Christmas, we look at Santa’s list - and get his recommendations for songs, films, food and this year’s must-have toys. There’s a huge quiz too should you be stuck for things to do over the festive period. Elsewhere we have your usual mix of home and garden, fashion, beauty and motoring and will be back in the new year. Stay safe.

A significant milestone DISCERNING CUSTOMERS APPRECIATE THE FIRST CLASS WORKMANSHIP THAT GOES INTO CREATING A DAVID J MARTIN KITCHEN. THAT THE BUSINESS HAS RECENTLY CELEBRATED 40 YEARS IS TESTAMENT TO ITS SUCCESS. ne of Sheffield’s most successful and long-standing businesses celebrated its 40th anniversary in December. David J. Martin has been creating stunning bespoke furniture, primarily for kitchens but also for bedrooms, studies and lounges, from the same business base on Springvale Road, Walkley since 1980. Forty years is a significant landmark for any business and a steady stream of satisfied customers have been won over by David’s obsession with doing every job to the highest possible standards. “I’m doing what I always wanted to do since I was at school,” says David, a carpenter by trade who studied for many years, starting with a City and Guilds in joinery and finishing up with a degree in his chosen subject. “I loved joinery and technical drawing and still get David in his workshop a lot of satisfaction from seeing a job through from start to finish.” Kitchens account for most of the work being done by David and his eight-strong team who are all highly trained and at the top of their game. Everything – and that does mean every single thing – is made from scratch with kitchens painstakingly designed to the last millimetre to suit the size and style of the home and meet the requirements of the customer. Every piece of wood is sanded in house, every colour is mixed and sprayed by the company’s own full time professional paint sprayer, and every sharp corner is rounded off by hand. “There’s no such thing as a typical David J Martin kitchen,” says David. “The fact that we make everything means the customer can have whatever they want. Everyone has a different view as to how a kitchen works, so a large part of my job is talking it through with them and finding out exactly what they would like. “We often find ourselves working in some very nice houses where the original kitchen was quite small, it was simply a place to prepare food in. So we are not just planning on where to put the new kitchen, we are also knocking down walls.” When this happens David J Martin can provide a one-stop shop for structural, plumbing and electricity work as well as building furniture. It generally takes three to four months from consultation to completion to finish a kitchen including six weeks to make

and three to five weeks to fit, depending on the amount of building work involved. David says: “Because we work as a team – plasterers, electricians, plumbers and fitters – everyone is lined up to come in and work as and when we need them. There is no delay and disruption for the customer is always kept to a minimum.” It’s at the design stage that David’s technical drawing skills come into their own as he prefers to show customers his own line drawings rather than using a CAD (computer aided design) machine. “Hand-drawn plans alongside photos of what we are starting from show a much truer depiction of what we are going to do and clients who are ordering a bespoke kitchen like it.” Looking to the future, David’s son Richard has worked for the company for 12 years and is now an integral part of the team, and with grandson Oliver the latest addition to the family, who’s to say this family business won’t still be going strong in another 40 years. A Christmas celebration ACTING DEAN GEOFFREY HARBORD SPEAKS TO SIXER ABOUT HIS SUITABILITY FOR THE ROLE, THE CURRENT PANDEMIC AND HIS HOPES FOR 2021. n this constantly changing world, Sheffield Cathedral has had to change and adapt like the best of us. At the time of writing it is currently closed to public worship but is open for private prayer. Aiming to reopen its doors on 3 December, restrictions permitting, it will be launching its Christmas Tree Festival, which is sponsored by etiCloud and will run throughout the month. Local businesses, schools and charities have been invited to sponsor Christmas trees which will be displayed around the stunning interior of the building and visitors can visit free of charge. Leading the Christmas celebrations will be recently appointed Acting Dean Geoffrey Harbord. He joins at the most difficult of times but was happy to speak to us about his suitability for the role, the current pandemic and his hopes for 2021. “Sheffield Cathedral has been a site of Christian worship for around a thousand years,” he said. “It is no stranger to dark days – in the 13th century it was burned down by rebels, it has witnessed the destruction wrought by civil war and the suffering caused by pestilence and plague and, 80 years ago this month, bombs falling all around it. “Today, as everywhere else, it is set in the midst of the COVID pandemic, with most of its services having to be broadcast online and the building itself only open for restricted hours.
I
14 www.rmcmedia.co.uk
“It is quite a challenge to work out how a cathedral can minister in these circumstances and I have been asked to help it do this over the next few months as its acting dean until a permanent one can be appointed. “I have known Sheffield Cathedral all my life. I was born but half a mile away from it, and many of my ancestors have lived in Sheffield back into the Middle Ages. After growing up in the city, I served in parishes in Rotherham and Doncaster and for the last 17 years have been the Bishop of Sheffield’s chaplain. So I am now delighted to be able to serve the cathedral of my home city. “Last December thousands visited the Cathedral to see the spectacular light

show ‘The Angels are Coming’. It was a beacon of light and hope in the midst of the short and dark days before Christmas. Light and hope are much needed in these COVID times and many found them recently when visiting the ‘Leaves of Hope’ installation at the Cathedral. This December we look forward to welcoming you to our spectacular Christmas Tree festival, either in person if permitted or online. “Whatever darkness we may have to face in the future, Sheffield Cathedral will always be a place where the people of our city can find the light that is Christ.” While you’re visiting the festival, don’t forget to call into the 1554 Coffee Shop and gift shop; at the latter you’ll find a range of Sheffield-related gifts, including products from Henderson’s Relish and Printed By Us. Steeldogs go wild Despite the second lockdown, the Bradfield Brewery Sheffield Steeldogs have continued to fulfil their ice hockey fixtures, playing games against Swindon Wildcats on 15 and 22 November in the Streaming Series. The first leg saw the Steeldogs triumph 5-1 and follow this up with a 7-5 win in leg two. Alex Graham was the star of the show. Images courtesy Dean Woolley.
Family stride out When the family of Sheffield United fan David Crampton decided they wanted to raise money for the St Luke’s Hospice Virtual Night Strider challenge, they chose a football theme. That meant completing an 11-mile walk from Rotherham’s New York Stadium to David’s beloved Sheffield United ground at Bramall Lane and then on to Sheffield Wednesday’s Hillsborough Stadium. And having finished the challenge in just over four hours, the team have raised more than £1,000 for St Luke’s.

For many, getting back to ‘normality’ after the lockdown period is not as straightforward as it seems. What happens if your boiler decides to give-in or your toilet won’t flush? Is it safe to invite someone into your home to rectify these problems? With Bumfords, the answer is a resounding yes. The family business, with over 50 years of invaluable experience behind them, has been working throughout the lockdown period, carrying out essential maintenance and repairs. Their engineers fully adhere to government guidelines, wear all appropriate PPE and will always call in advance of attending a home visit to ensure it is safe to do so. Neil and his team offer a host of plumbing and heating services to homes and businesses throughout Sheffield and South Yorkshire, including installation, service and repair. They also offer underfloor heating, smart heating controls, bathrooms, electricals, lighting and drainage. Their online quotation service makes life easier for customers who want a quick estimate, whether you’re looking for a boiler repair or a brand new, more efficient boiler installed in your home. Stannington Players Stannington Players have been closely monitoring government guidelines around large groups meeting days and have taken the decision not to proceed with their pantomime this year - not an easy decision to make. “The safety of our members and audiences is our main priority, and unfortunately at this time, there are too many restrictions still in place for us to perform safely,” a spokesperson said. “It is our intention to perform ‘Allo Allo’ in April. We thank you for all your understanding at this and look forward to seeing you soon.” To find out more, visit www.stanningtonplayers.org.uk

INDEPENDENT
Made in Sheffield FLASK END VILLAGE SHOP AND POST OFFICE HAS BECOME A ONE-STOP CHRISTMAS SHOP IN SUPPORT OF CITY INDEPENDENTS. tiny village Post Office in the Peak District village of Bradfield has come up with a novel idea to ensure the lockdown doesn’t ruin anyone’s Christmas. Flask End, which is a village store, Post Office and cafe, is classed as an essential service so continues to trade during this second lockdown. With the inside cafe area having to close, Postmistress Heather Tingle came up with a novel idea to utilise the empty space by offering independent local businesses a place to sell their Christmas gift stock. Curated Makers, which were due to have weeks of retail space in a pop-up shop in John Lewis in Sheffield city centre, found their plans were curtailed due to the lockdown hitting after only three days of being in store, and this is where Flask End and Bradfield Post Office stepped in. Four of the John Lewis pop-up shop traders have now hastily organised displays inside the quaint village store, along with 17 other Sheffield independent businesses. Customers that wish to support Sheffield businesses are now able to browse the myriad of gifts in store, whilst picking up their essential groceries or using the Post Office. Heather Tingle said: “During the first lockdown the importance of using small independents and shopping local was really highlighted, with people unable to access supermarket deliveries, and big supply chains failing. We were poised to
A
step in so that local customers, the elderly and vulnerable, were able to shop with us and get fresh produce in a stress free, and socially distanced manner. “The second lockdown at this time of year will mean so many retailers miss out on peak Christmas trading so we wanted to offer a lifeline to those businesses as well as giving our customers an alternative to shopping online with massive corporations like Amazon. It’s quite a coup for a tiny shop like us to be able to rival the likes of John Lewis! “Flask End already had the ethos of ‘shop local’ for many years with our produce supplied from local companies such as Moss Valley Fine Meats and Our Cow Molly so it‘s a delight to expand our suppliers to bring Christmas to our customers during this difficult time. We frantically turned our cafe area into a Christmas emporium complete with shelves trimmed with tinsel and pretty lights - it’s been quite a feat to dismantle half our business including finding a new temporary home for our the 14ft church pew! “We understand that travelling is discouraged, but now locals needing to get some exercise around our beautiful Bradfield dams will be able to pop in for a takeaway coffee, buy some stamps, get their fresh bread and veg, and tick off their Christmas shopping list all in one go - we truly are a one-stop Christmas shop!”

BEER
Sup local SIXER HAS JOINED FORCES WITH VISIONARY BREWMASTER TO BRING YOU A MONTHLY BEER COLUMN. isionary Brewmaster started earlier this year when a few friends, sat in a pub in Whitby, decided to develop an Instagram page to share the beers they sampled with others. Through it they discuss the beers they have sampled, the flavours and the importance of understanding where beers are brewed. “We try to post a new beer daily showcasing the brewery, signposting followers to their pages and providing details on the flavours, background and of course a Brewmaster rating,” said Leon Dearns. “We set out to show support to all breweries with our motto ‘Sup local’, assisting small businesses during this strange and tough year of lockdowns and the unknown, attempting to provide some positive stories to offer people a small break from 2020. “Along with supping local we wish to ensure Sheffield people are aware of the great produce on offer to them, promote seasonal beers and showcase the history of breweries.” Over the coming months, Leon will be recommending beers, pubs, breweries and bottle shops - all local and independent.

Visionary Brewmaster’s picks for December:
BRADFIELD BREWERY, FARMERS BELGIAN BLUE Bradfield Brewery is an obvious choice to support and “Sup local”! It’s wellknown within the S6 area and Belgian Blue is one of the brilliant Farmers beers and ales they brew along with some quality merchandise, from beer mats to Christmas hampers and clothing, all perfect gifts for any beer lover. This beer is brewed within plenty of time for Christmas and always makes us feel festive when we taste our first one of the year. The beer is just ‘something different’ delivering fruity flavours and a deep aftertaste. We’ve had some great memories enhanced by Belgian Blue; however, it can cause a sore head or two, defiantly a worthwhile hangover! “As we’re battle on through lockdown two, we are hopeful that the pubs can reopen in December and people will be able to enjoy a pint of Belgian Blue on draught,” said the brewery’s John Gill. “In the meantime, we are keeping our beers flowing in bottles and mini kegs for people to enjoy at home instead. We have implemented a drive thru service at the Brewery for bulk buys and contactless purchases as well as continuing to offer a doorstep delivery service.” Visit the brewery’s site to find out more bradfieldbrewery.com
WALKLEY BEER COMPANY This great local beer shop is stocked full of local delights and ran by experts full of knowledge and advice to ensure you walk away happy with a brew to remember and enjoy. Walkley Beer Co offers exceptional quality at great prices, from small independent beers to more well-known local favourites. We picked up some strong beers ranging up to 9%, including the likes of; Deliverance Double IPA Abbeydale Brewery, Matching Mullets Red IPA - Lost Industry Brewery Ltd and Octacan Hazy Pale Ale - No Heroes Brewing (partnership with One Tree Planted). The latter has an awesome background story of supporting the environment through planting a tree every time they make a sale. The shop doubles up as a great little bar with a welcoming atmosphere, however, due to the current situation they are relying on walk-in purchases, so they need the support more now than ever for Sheffield people to buy and sup locally! Walkley Beer Co is open Wednesday to Sunday afternoon, so there’s plenty of time to make a visit and sample what they have on offer. CHRISTMAS LIST
Christmas by numbers FROM FILMS TO SONGS, AND FOOD TO DRINK, HERE’S SOME WONDERFUL CHRISTMASSY LISTS TO GET YOU INTO THE SPIRIT. BY REBECCA WALES.
e’s making a list and checking it twice, going to find out who’s naughty and nice… Yes, Santa Claus is coming to town and bringing lots of festive cheer to boot. No doubt the tree is already up, you’ve dusted off that Nat King Cole CD and consumed more mince pies than you can remember, but what will Christmas be like for you this year? It’s certainly going to be different and, at the time of writing, we’re still unsure how we’ll be celebrating the big day. CHRISTMAS LIST
Food No Christmas is complete without food - and the more of it the better. 1 Turkey The much-maligned bird is the cornerstone of Christmas dinner. Give the goose a miss and go with tradition. 2 Mince pies Shop-bought or homemade, the humble mince captures the essence of Christmas in a few tasty mouthfuls. 3 Christmas pudding It may not be for everyone but with lashings of brandy sauce, it’s the perfect way to finish your Christmas meal. 4 Pigs in blankets When did these become such an integral part of Christmas dinner. Sausages wrapped in bacon are 5 the perfect partner to turkey.
Drinks Chances are your alcohol intake will increase over the festive period - here are some beverages for all occasions. 1 Mulled wine Served warm, this spiced wine is the perfect winter warmer and just screams Christmas. 2 Eggnog Usually considered an American tradition, eggnog actually originated in this country. Made with eggs, milk, cream and sugar, it’s a sweet treat. 3 Champagne Wake up to a glass of fizz on 25 December. Is there a better way to celebrate?
Brussel sprouts No dinner is complete without them. Instead of 6 boiling, try frying them with chestnuts and bacon.
4 Snowball They usually only surface at Christmastime and are something of an acquired taste.
Parnsips Roast them with a few carrots and a splash of honey to add a touch of sweetness to your dinner.
5 Port The perfect partner to your festive cheeseboard.
Cheese One to enjoy over the days following Christmas, usually with some good chutney and a glass of port. 7
Gingerbread The tradition of making gingerbread houses started in Germany but the spice-laden biscuits are the perfect accompaniment to any festive feast. 8
9 Chocolate Roses/Quality Street/Miniature Heroes/Terry’s Chocolate Orange… delete as applicable. Anything will do. 10 Yorkshire pudding Perhaps the most controversial addition to any Christmas dinner. Does it belong? It comes down to personal preference.
48 www.rmcmedia.co.uk
6 Bailey’s What is it about creamy drinks that seem so appropriate at Christmas? 7 Whisky Great straight up (or on the rocks) but even better in a hot toddy after a bracing winter walk. 8 Sherry The sweetness of the many different sherries is a good match for rich festive food. 9 Hot chocolate The whole family can wrap their hands around a steaming mug, preferably with marshmallows and whipped cream. 10 Martini Raise a glass to the recently departed Sean Connery. Make sure it’s shaken, not stirred of course.

CHRISTMAS FOOD
Artisan gifts COCOA SPINK’S CHOCOLATE TREATS ARE PERFECT FOR CHRISTMAS. n recent years, there has been a notable rise in artisan brands, with more people valuing quality over quantity. The notion that more people are now leaning towards buying locally-produced, handmade confectionary in particular is something that Sue from Cocoa Spink recognises. Based in Sheffield, Sue is an artisan chocolate-maker who set up her business, Cocoa Spink, in 2017. Since then, Sue has created an impressive range of chocolates and treats, all of which are handmade in her kitchen. Her products can also be personalised if requested. Sue first got involved in chocolate-making in 2016 when she accompanied a friend on a chocolatemaking course. However, her passion for creativity started long before then. “Many years previous to this I worked in my family business, which was the butchers at Bents Green. Even then, I enjoyed trying to be creative in the shop.” Sue started Cocoa Spink whilst working part-time in a local nursery and helped her newly-established business grow by attending local markets such as Sharrow Vale, Nether Edge and other food festivals. “One of the first bars I
I
60 www.rmcmedia.co.uk
created was a rocky road bar (which I now call the ultimate rocky road). It has a finest Belgian chocolate base topped with fudge pieces, marshmallows and feuilletine. It’s one of my favourite products.” Like with many businesses, Sue has had to overcome hurdles this year, having lost all of her markets bar the odd one. “In order to keep Cocoa Spink afloat, I tried Etsy and luckily it’s been quite successful for me. I also now have a website on my Cocoa Spink Instagram page which I’m starting to build.” Similarly to everyone else, Sue acknowledges that Christmas is going to be a bit different this year and hopes that a few of her chocolate treats will bring a little joy to people. “I’m currently busy making hot chocolate stirrers and chocolate lollipops – both of which are
perfect for table presents, stocking fillers and Christmas Eve boxes. Letterbox bars are also a great idea and price point (around £6 which includes p&p).” As for the future, Sue is feeling positive. “I’d like to think about setting up a chocolate-themed café one day… we’ll see!” Find out more at www.cocoaspink.com

MOTORING
GET HOT UNDER THE COLLAR WITH THIS MONTH’S MOTORING OFFERINGS. BY JORDAN CUTFORTH.
Hotter hatch
Right price The SUV offerings from Peugeot have always been a solid alternative to the usually crop you get from the Germans. With their great styling and plethora of technology on offer they provide a car that’s hard to ignore in this sector of the market. Peugeot has now announced the pricing and specification of their new 3008 and 5008 ranges. With a choice of efficient petrol and diesel powertrains including a choice of two plug-in hybrids on the 3008 model producing figures of 235mpg WLTP, prices will range from £27,160-£47,210 for the 3008 and £29,585£40,905 for the 5008. A six-speed manual and eight-speed automatic gearbox are offered in both cars, however the two advanced plug-in hybrid powertrains are only available in the 3008.
For the hot-hatch lovers out there, Hyundai has developed a new hatch from the skunkworks of its N-division. Say hello to the i20 N. The i30 N was a nutter of a car, if it was human is would almost certainly have an ASBO. Think of the i20 N as the annoying little brother following in its big brother’s footsteps. Not much word on the powertrain or performance details, however we do know that the styling has been inspired by the i20 WRC rally car, meaning it’s going to look like a hot-hatch should, and sounds just as you would expect. For years the Skoda Octavia VRS has been the staple for allround everyday performance motoring, ranging from the hardworking blue-collar family man’s workhorse to the traffic cop’s undercover stealth machine. Never has there been an electric version, up until now – under the hood lies a 148hp 1.4 TSI petrol engine, which combined with an 85kW electric motor boosts power to 242hp and 400Nm of torque. WINE
Sparkle and shine SUPERMARKET WINES: DISCOVERING OUTSTANDING YET AFFORDABLE WINE. BY JAMIE GREEN. ith the festive season upon us, we’ve reviewed a few different styles to help you celebrate this December. You may be surprised to read that this article is going to completely steer clear of Champagne; we’ll look at alternatives to save on the pennies, while not losing out on quality. First thing to remember about sparkling wine is that all Champagne is sparkling wine, but not all sparkling wine is Champagne. The ‘traditional method’ they use to create the bubbles and distinctive flavours has been recreated by many other countries in the world, including Spain and more recently right here in the UK.
W
*** Much of what you pay for with Champagne is the name and prestige of the region. Cava and English sparkling wine are great alternatives if you are looking for something with similar flavours to Champagne. However, Prosecco is a great alternative to enjoy a sparkling wine that displays more freshness and fruit flavours.
Supermarket Wines’ Selection:
CAVA Cava is made using the same method as Champagne but utilise different grapes and lawfully require shorter ageing requirements. This leads to wines that can have more freshness and fruit characteristics, but also can display those biscuity and yeasty flavours like those from Champagne.
PROSECCO There is more to Prosecco than just affordable bubbles. Most Prosecco wines are produced in a dry (Brut) style. However, due to the grapes’ fruity flavours of green apple, honey, melon, and pear, it can seem sweeter than it is. Unlike Champagne and Cava, Prosecco gets its bubbles while fermenting in steel tanks rather than in the bottle. The wine does not need to be aged before it can be sold. This means the wine maintains its freshness.
UK SPARKLING WINE The average temperature of the south UK is currently the same of that of Champagne in the 1960s1970s. This, along with improved winemaking techniques, has led to huge amounts of progress in English sparkling wine. Using the same method and grapes as the Champagne region, the UK have excelled in producing ‘Champagne-style’ wines and are fast becoming the ones to watch within the global wine community.
Cava Brut M&S, Spain, £7
Prosecco Extra Dry Aldi, Italy, £7.99
English Sparkling Wine Tesco, UK, £19
Tasting Notes: Slight brioche followed by citrus and green apple. The wine is fresh and lively, backed up with underlying baked biscuits.
Tasting Notes: One of the best Prosecco wines around. A dry wine full of green apple and pear. There is also a refreshing lemon zing that cuts through the wine.
Tasting Notes: This wine is produced by Hush Heath Estate, who produce a range of quality English sparkling wines. It is a dry, crisp wine with apple and citrus flavours balanced by delicate brioche notes.
Introducing Prosecco Rosé Italian sparkling rosé is not a new concept, but it couldn’t be labelled under Prosecco regulations until May 2020. Expect this to be the drink of Christmas 2020 and Summer 2021. Having sampled Marks & Spencer’s pink fizz, it is bursting with summer fruits, strawberry and finished with gentle lime citrus. Where to find Prosecco Rosé? Aldi – £6.49 / Lidl – £6.49 / Marks & Spencer – £8 / Asda - £6.50
