SIXERDO YOU REMEMBER? ere’s a group of bright young men who are definitely going places‌ many thanks to Barry Couldwell for sending us this fabulous snap that perfectly captures a carefree moment from a few years ago. Do tell us if this jogs any memories. Last month’s pantomime photo proved to be particularly memorable for Sixer readers. Audrey Turner (formerly Wallis) of Stannington recognises the scene from almost 70 years ago. She says: “It was taken in Underbank school room and I am one of the four Wallis girls – Dora, Audrey, Marlene and Andrea – in the photo. We did a show every year and LAST MONTH: thoroughly enjoyed it. We were under the guidance of Rev. and Mrs Tindall.â€? Joanne Darwin also has vivid memories and tells us the show was called The Little Nut Tree and the photo was taken in 1946.

NEW YEAR, NEW YOU From stylish technology to the latest superfoods, make sure you’re well-equipped to make your 2016 resolutions last. By Molly McGreevy and Phoebe Seymour. New Year means a new start so many of us vow to be fitter and healthier when January rolls around. But as good as our intentions to eat better and work out more are, we start to lose our way come February. One of the reasons our resolutions fall apart is that health and fitness, like much of modern life, has become a confusing and sometimes overwhelming world. There is a new superfood every week, a different fashionable fitness class being offered each time you enter the gym and at least three news stories a week telling us the latest foods we shouldn’t be eating for fear of causing illness. Here are a couple of ways to stay on track and not get distracted by the health and fitness hype this January.
A

recording everything, from what you eat for breakfast to how you sleep at night, and every hop, skip and jump in between. Fitness trackers are usually worn around your wrist, and connect to an app on your phone. The most basic count your steps then tell you how many calories you’ve burned, whilst higher end trackers can monitor your heart rate, how you sleep and track runs and cycles. Phone apps can be used to enter the calories you’re eating, and use the information you enter to tell you if you’re missing any crucial nutrients from your diet. Most fitness trackers are designed to be sleek and stylish, as opposed to the ugly and cumbersome pedometers that are the technology’s closest predecessor. Some look more like watches, with a display face and chunky strap, whilst others are thinner and more discreet. Users shouldn’t be deceived by their fashionable design though, many fitness trackers are prepared for all the elements and can withstand everyday use, and some

can be used in water so swimmers can track their activities. There is a whole host of free apps available for wearable fitness technology. Some devices have an app specifically tailored to them, and only users of the technology have access to the app. However, there is still a huge choice of fitness apps to choose from. Sports brand Adidas has created miCoach, an app which turns your phone into a personal trainer. miCoach offers free diet and training plans, motivates you as you exercise, and connects with your wearable to build a detailed picture of your health fitness regime. With so many free apps available, and wearable fitness trackers becoming easier to use and more fashionable to wear, keeping fit and healthy has never been as stylish as it will be in 2016. As ever, the tough part comes from within. If you don’t have the willpower to change your lifestyle, all those gadgets won’t count for much.

Read what you eat We are constantly hearing contradictory information about the food and drinks we consume. One day we’re told coffee is bad for our stress levels, the next we are told it is a great antioxidant. Who should we believe? Which foods should we eat more of? And which should we cut out altogether? The best way to get around this problem is to educate ourselves with reliable information straight from the nutritionists’ mouths. Reading the back of food packaging can be baffling, so a great book to start with is E for Additives by Maurice Hanssen. This best-selling and award-winning E number book helps you understand the lists of additives that appear on food packets, so you can see exactly what has been added, where it comes from, why it has been added, and what it might do to you. The Reader’s Digest Foods that Heal, Foods that Harm is another fantastic read that draws on the experience of over 300 experts. This A-Z provides information about diet and health, vitamins and supplements, additives and allergies, and tells you which foods can help combat particular ailments. If you are looking for a health plan to fit you, The Optimum Nutrition Bible by Patrick Holford has easy-to-follow questionnaires and a simple step-by-step plan telling you what nutrients you need to live a healthier,
www.regionalmagazine.co.uk
happier life. Accompany this with The Optimum Nutrition Cookbook co-written by Judy Ridgway, which is bursting with inspirational meal ideas. Who says healthy food has to be boring? So forget about fad diet books, if you really want to rid yourself of those extra pounds and have a healthier life this year and beyond, you’ll need a timeless nutrition ‘bible’ that never goes out of style.
Superfoods Gluten-free banana flour has a quarter of the calories of normal flour, and is packed with potassium and fibre that keeps you fuller for longer. And it’s not just cakes and bakes that the new superfood can be used in. Despite its name, banana flour doesn’t take the flavour of the fruit it originates from and recipes include pastas, smoothies, and pizzas. Plus, if you make your own baby food, banana flour is a great healthy alternative for the little ones too. As well as being great for you, using banana flour in your food helps to prevent food waste, as it is made from bananas that would otherwise be destined for the bin. Bananas that are too lumpy or bumpy for the supermarket shelves are peeled, cut and dried before being crushed into flour. So not only is banana flour healthy and delicious, but ethical too. If baking isn’t your thing, and you prefer savoury comfort foods during the winter months, bone broth is looking to make a comeback in 2016. Despite traditionally seen as being a Grandmother’s flu remedy, broth is the latest health trend foodies are getting excited about. Cheap, easy to make and full of essential nutrients bone broth is set to be on every fashionista’s dinner table in the next year. The health benefits of bone broth are undeniable. Broth is full of protein and gelatine, aids digestion and gives your skin and hair a healthy glow. Unlike other superfoods broth isn’t expensive or difficult to make. Busy all day? Your broth will cook in the slow cooker whilst you’re at work and be ready for your return. The longer you cook your broth, the more nutritious it will become as the slow, low heat process allows for the release of proteins and minerals. In 2016, bone broth is predicted to take over from smoothies from as the most fashionable on-the-go superfood, with commuters swapping their fruity morning beverage for the latest savoury, warm superfood.

PROMOTIONPOWERS GYM
Powers Gym looking forward to another successful year in 2016. ot many gyms can say their average client retention is ten years, or that they are a gym for the whole family – but the Powers team can. Sue and Paul Powers, owners and founders of Personal Trainers Inc and Powers Martial Arts Centre, put their success down to several factors, including a team of experienced, friendly staff who make every client feel welcome. The gym is well known as a one-stop-shop for health, fitness, nutrition, K1 kickboxing, mixed martial arts (MMA) and self defence. They are proud to cater for a diverse range of clients, which includes males and females from as young as four years old up to 77 years old, all of whom have their own individual goals. Another unique aspect of Powers Gym is the vast difference in their clients’ experience and ability. You’ll find people who are new to exercise or those with health problems training alongside elite athletes. Happily training together under one roof, they help to create a friendly, welcoming atmosphere for everyone. Sue and her team of personal trainers have had great success over the years by helping clients to become fitter and healthier through losing weight, increasing mobility and being motivated to reach their goals. Sue’s experience and knowledge has also helped many clients who suffer with chronic health problems return to work, enjoy their sports and hobbies, and generally feel much better about themselves. The gym also benefits a wide variety of sports-specific clients including footballers, rugby players, golfers, tennis players, swimmers and netball players. Their latest success story is the early morning and evening fitcamps, which are run by the centre’s manager Alex Mackenzie and personal trainer Shaun Weston. Both trainers have had fantastic results with clients losing substantial weight

and improving fitness levels. The other side of the business, Powers Martial Arts Centre, is very well known for producing K1 kickboxing champions. During many years of hard work, Paul and his team have worked with many local children and, as well as many other awards, have won two world titles. However, the centre is not just for fighters and the majority of Paul’s clients simply train to keep fit and learn to protect themselves. They can grade from white to black belt and even become an instructor if they wish. Another of the centre’s growing areas is the new MMA classes with the European MMA champion Dan Gibbon. Paul and his team are also pleased to see a substantial increase in female clients taking up K1 kickboxing, MMA and self defence. In fact, one of last year’s most popular classes was the women-only self defence Kickboxing champions and personal safety session, which will continue this year. 2016 will also see the introduction of men-only self defence and street combat sessions. Free children’s kickboxing classes, aimed at underprivileged youngsters, will again be offered this year. The highlight of 2015 was Powers Martial Arts Centre, along with Yorkshire MKA, being given the great honour of becoming Great Britain team coaches and selectors for the 2016 ISKA (International Sport Kickboxing Association) world championships in Germany. A range of training methods are available to help every client achieve their goals. This includes classes, one-to-one private lessons, shared private lessons, private group lessons and family lessons in which parents and children all train together. Sue, Paul and the team wish all clients a happy and healthy New Year and look forward to a successful 2016. Open seven days a week 6am-9.30pm

PROMOTIONCLARITY IN MIND
From weight loss and keeping fit to coping with life’s setbacks, life coaching from Clarity in Mind can help you achieve your goals. ith a new year comes a new set of goals. Your aim to lose weight or to finally pursue that dream may seem straight forward, but having a plan and sticking to it is another thing. No one knows this better than life coach Deborah Cundy. When she went on her own mission to lose weight several years ago, she knew it would be a huge challenge. But thanks to a completely new attitude and tons of self motivation, Deborah managed to shed an incredible 12 stone. This amazing achievement inspired her to set up her own life coaching business Clarity In Mind. Two years on, she has helped numerous people achieve their own goals. Though Deborah specialises in weight loss, she has helped clients tackle everything from confidence and low self esteem, to achieving a work/life balance, career development and dealing with redundancy and retirement. “Coaching is very future focussed,” says Deborah. “Many of my clients know what they want but aren’t sure how to achieve their goals, so I provide that guidance.” Through supportive one-to-one coaching sessions, she helps her clients to break down challenges and to view all the options available to them. And if you are unable to meet in person, she is happy to coach clients via telephone or Skype. Deborah has a diploma in personal performance coaching (accredited by the Association for Coaching) and is passionate about continuing to develop her coaching skills. She knows from personal experience how people can take comfort from food during times of sadness and stress. “Life throws a lot at us,” she says. “What makes me different to other life coaches is that I really do empathise with my clients, especially when it comes to weight loss.” Deborah’s kind nature and determination to lose weight, has also led her to support and fundraise for various charities in Sheffield. After discovering a love of cycling, she has taken part in a number of cycling events for The British Heart Foundation, Blue Bell Wood and more recently, cycled from London to Paris for Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity and Endeavour, a charity which helps young people who have been excluded from

Not one to let the grass grow under her feet, Deborah has spoken on local radio several times and recently did a spot of interviewing herself with Sheffield Olympic and world heptathlon gold medallist and Weston Park patron Jessica Ennis-Hill. Deborah is now an ambassador for Move More (an initiative to make Sheffield the UK’s most active city by 2020). She is focused on another goal to cycle Ireland coast to coast and is currently in training. Deborah continues to keep fit with her passion for cycling, kick-boxing and attending boot camps. “I’m the fittest I’ve ever been and I feel great,” says Deborah. “I’m positive and passionate about helping other people achieve their goals and to helping them live the life they deserve.” Deborah even finds time to talk about her inspiring journey through a number of guest speaking events, including a recent talk to Women’s Institute members and has appeared on several podcasts which can be found on YouTube. BRADFIELD PARISH COUNCIL NEWSLETTER IN ASSOCIATION WITH SIXER
REPORT BY THE CHAIRMAN 015 was yet another busy year for the Bradfield Parish and Parish Council and I have thoroughly enjoyed being involved in the many local events, which continue to make Bradfield and the surrounding villages such a special place. One major development this year was the Vodafone Rural Open Sure Signal project, a community-led initiative to provide 3G connectivity and mobile internet access to ‘not-spots’ in rural areas. The Council have been battling for a long time to improve connectivity in the area and first applied to take part in the 2012 project. Although we weren’t chosen for the trial project, another opportunity arose in 2014 to be part of the full project, and this time we were successful. Vodafone has now installed a sure signal box at The Plough Inn on New Road, Flask End Post Office/Cafe at the bottom of Woodfall Lane and The Old Horns at the top of Woodfall Lane in High Bradfield. The three sites chosen for the boxes should ensure that the majority of the area is covered and anyone who is a Vodafone customer should now be able to make and receive calls and texts in these buildings or within approximately 500 meters of them. We are extremely grateful to The Plough, The Old Horns and Flask End for allowing the apparatus to be located on their buildings. It is hoped that other companies will follow suit in this advancement in technology, allowing better access for more people. A highlight for me was the Poppy Memorial Trail, and seeing St
2
Nicholas’ Church illuminated with images of giant poppies to commemorate those who have given their lives fighting for their country. I attended the opening service where the Lord Mayor switched the lights on, and laid a wreath at St Nicholas’ Church to commemorate 100 years of World War One at the Loxley Silver Band concert. It was fantastic to see so many turn out to support the project and help raise money. In October I went along to Lomas Hall for the Stannington Carnival presentations, where the scouts, bell ringers and other groups received donations thanks to funds raised at the carnival. I also attended a charity auction held at The Peacock pub, which raised funds for Knowle Top Chapel. These are just a few events from last year, which demonstrate the generosity and community spirit in our wonderful Parish. I would like to wish everyone a happy New Year, and look forward to the year ahead. Councillor Vickie Priestley

ollowing such a fantastic response to 2014’s Christmas card competition, Bradfield Parish Council decided to run it once again and were delighted to receive over 100 entries from all six schools in the Parish. Children from Warncliffe Side Primary, Bradfield Dungworth Primary, Stannington Infant, Loxley Primary, Oughtibridge Primary and Nook Lane Juniors were all given a brief to design a Christmas card. From the many entries Councillors chose three finalists from each school, from which an overall winner was selected. The winning design, drawn by five-year-old Chloe Ashe from

Chloe’s mum, Kate Ashe, said Chloe had really enjoyed taking part. “She loves drawing people and was delighted to win. She has been looking forward to the tea party.” Oughtibridge teachers Helen Reid and Karen Burrows added: “It has been great, we had entries from every year group and all the children really enjoyed it.” All finalists and their parents were invited to a tea party at the Council offices, where the designs were on display and guests enjoyed a buffet catered for by Caroline Graham. Chairman Vickie Priestley presented each child with prizes, including a pack of the Christmas cards, a selection box, a £5 high street voucher for finalists, and a £10 voucher for the winner. Each school also received a £50 book token for taking part. Following the tea party, it was time for the highlight of the evening – the Parish’s Christmas tree light switch on. Everyone gathered outside and began the countdown while – as winner of the competition – Chloe stepped up to the podium and pushed down the plunger, which turned on the lights of all 12 trees dotted around the Parish. “We enjoyed looking at all the cards and it’s great to hold events like this because it’s good for the schools to see what goes on here,” Vicky said. ““It’s fantastic that so many got involved this year, and we hope it will be even bigger next year.”

PROMOTIONCLINICA AESTHETICS
Cosmetic procedures are not to be taken lightly, but you’ll be in the hands of an expert with the highest professional standards at Clinica Aesthetics. f you are considering aesthetic treatments but have been scared by horror stories in the press or are worried about confidentiality, Clinica Aesthetics could be exactly what you’re searching for. The clinic, on Stockarth Lane in Worrall, boasts a secluded, semi-rural location and is run by Sue Robinson, who has 35plus years’ experience as a nurse. Sue has always had an interest in aesthetics and after leaving the NHS, she gained a masters-level qualification in independent prescribing at Bradford University. During this time she gained invaluable experience working in London with her clinical mentor, Dr Aamer Khan, of the renowned Harley Street Skin Clinic. This qualification means no third party needs to be involved to prescribe any treatments, and that Sue can offer continuity of care to her clients with everything being completed to her exacting high standards. Sue’s professionalism is evident in every aspect of her business and work ethic. “I am a member of the BACN (The British Association of Cosmetic Nurses),” she says. “I attend as many study days and conferences as possible to make sure I’m always up to date ethically and product-wise.” Throughout her nursing career, Sue has worked with people from many different walks of life, including young adults when she was a school nurse. This is one reason why Sue believes it’s so important to practice ethically. “My job is to make people look as good as they possibly can for their age. Having worked in schools, I know the pressures that young people feel from the media and you have to make sure someone wants to have a treatment for the right reasons, not just because it is in fashion; I won’t do trout pouts and I am reluctant to treat anyone under the age of 20 – unless it’s a correction, such as facial asymmetry – because even at 18 years old, the structure of the face hasn’t finished developing. “For anyone considering aesthetics, my advice is to seek out a professional nurse or doctor as we are listed on the registers of our mandatory regulatory bodies, which anyone can check out. It’s vital that you make sure the person treating you is experienced, to ensure your safety.” Two of Sue’s most popular treatments are wrinkle-relaxing injections and facial dermal fillers, which are used to plump up lips and smooth out lines and wrinkles. Medical-grade chemical skin peels are also available and are great for treating hyper pigmentation, sun spots, uneven skin tone and acne

scarring. This treatment requires four or five days down time but results in beautiful new skin. Other treatments include medical dermal needling, which is used to treat scarring, fine lines and wrinkles, pigmentation and much more, anywhere on the body. Sue is also trained in HD brows, which can transform the way you look by creating tailored brows to suit your face shape – the effect has even been likened to a mini facelift. In addition to these treatments, Sue stocks Obagi, a prescription-only skincare system that can transform skin in 18-24 weeks. There are four different systems available and Sue analyses your skin before recommending the best range for you and up to monitor progress. As well as the clinic on Stockarth Lane, Sue also holds a clinic Mondays, 10am-4pm, and Wednesdays, 5-8pm, at Hair Union next to Dore and Totley railway station. Weekends, evening and home visits are available by arrangement. For more information visit www.clinicaaesthetics.com or call Sue on 07771 604604. Words: Phoebe Seymour
STRING FEVER Walkley-born tenor Rossano Sal is making a career in music with the aid of a little Mantovani magic. rom singing along to our car radios, to our fascination with TV shows such as Britain’s Got Talent and The X Factor, many of us have dreamed of performing in front of a live audience. But actually making it in the world of showbusiness is another thing entirely. When Rossano Sal was growing up in Walkley, he couldn’t have imagined how a decision to pursue musical theatre in secondary school would change his life. Rossano started by getting involved in a number of drama groups in Sheffield including the Walkley Ebenezer Dramatics Society (WEADS), The Woodseats Theatre Society and Croft House Musical Theatre, which led to opportunities to perform at The Lyceum, and local theatre school Stagecoach Theatre Arts. He would perform in hotels when holidaying with his family in Bournemouth, until the age of 17, when he permanently moved to the seaside town to follow his dreams of being a professional performer. Despite not being interested in classical music until he was 19, it seems Rossano was always fated to sing. “My Italian

grandfather was a tenor,” he explains. “He loved Pavarotti. He sang in the clubs in Sheffield and a lot of my inspiration has come from him.” And when Rossano explored opera, he found it came naturally to him. Now, more than ten years later at the age of 30, Rossano is a classically trained, professional vocalist, who performs with The Magic of Mantovani Orchestra. Mantovani was an Anglo-Italian conductor and composer who lived in Bournemouth for a while. His music was particularly popular in the 1950s and 60s, and his signature cascading strings helped make him Britain’s most successful album act before the Beatles. Mantovani died in 1980, but his musical legacy is kept alive by percussionist Paul Barratt, also from Sheffield and based in Bournemouth, who is co-founder of the modern-day The Magic of Mantovani orchestra. This recreates the distinctive Mantovani sound with an impressive 47-piece orchestra made up of musicians from the BBC Concert Orchestra and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. “Paul Barratt performs with the orchestra too and if you watch our videos, you will see him running around, playing various instruments,” says Rossano. “We perform at The Pavilion in Bournemouth, which seats about 2,500 so it’s a massive venue.” Mantovani and his original orchestra rarely used vocalists, but when Paul saw Rossano performing with his singing partner Jemma Truss two years ago, he knew he needed to find a way to make Rossano’s solos and duets work with the Mantovani style.

Rossano now performs seven songs. Some are classic Mantovani tracks, originally performed by Mario Del Monaco, while others have been adapted. “It was like an experiment,” says Rossano, remembering his first performance with the orchestra. “I did a few songs and the response from the audience was absolutely fantastic. I was performing Be My Love - the Mario Del Monaco version – and the reaction was so good, I had to sing a part of it again!” Though its size means it can only perform once or twice a year, the Mantovani Orchestra is hoping to go on tour in the near future. Under the guidance of New Zealand opera singer Jon Andrew, Rossano was rising to bigger challenges by his late twenties, but it wasn’t until he met vocal coach Olivia Whelan that his classical performances really developed. “As a tenor I’ve always gone to male vocal coaches but when I started singing with Olivia, it challenged my technique,” he said. “She’s been a massive inspiration and was a professional in the industry herself. This will be a big year for the The Magic of Mantovani Orchestra because she is inviting a lot of theatrical agents.” But the orchestra isn’t the only project keeping Rossano busy in Bournemouth. “Me and Jemma do a lot with the military and go to Portsmouth to do about 15 to 20 gala dinners a year.” Despite working professionally, Rossano is also happy to make time for other projects and charity events. “It’s a big part of what I do,” says Rossano. “I like to give up my free time for societies – especially around this time of year. I do a lot with The Gilbert and Sullivan Society in Bournemouth and have sung carols at Masonic lodges for Macmillan. “I also did a show at Buxton Opera House for The Gilbert and Sullivan Festival a couple

of years ago called The Sorcerer and was nominated for Best Male Singer. It’s a big festival and people come from all over the world, so it was a great affirmation just to get nominated.” Rossano has also performed at charity gala dinners including a recent breast and prostate cancer fundraiser at The Key West Restaurant on Bournemouth Pier. One of Rossano’s most memorable moments was when West End and Broadway star Earl Carpenter and TV actress and Britain’s Got Talent judge Amanda Holden returned to the Jellicoe Theatre in Bournemouth, where they originally trained, to judge the Skills Challenge 2005 competition. “I came second for my performance of This Is The Moment from Jekyll and Hyde and was lucky enough to go to London to receive my award from athlete Colin Jackson.” Rossano is looking forward to yet another busy year rehearsing with the Mantovani Orchestra in April, performing at the Gilbert and Sullivan Festival in Harrogate in August and performing in Monty Python’s musical Spamalot in June, but he still has plenty more challenges on his wish list. “I’d love to perform full time on a West End show. If I could work on either Les Miserables or Phantom of the Opera – I’d have done my job and would be happy. “It’s a work in progress. You’re always learning new techniques as a singer,” he said. “It’s just a big achievement to still be working. I wouldn’t be where I am today without the support of my friends and family.” For more information on Rossano Sal, visit www.rossano-sal.com or to find out about the latest Mantovani Orchestra news and upcoming shows, visit www.barrettfilmsmantovani.com.

PROMOTIONDAVID J MARTIN
QUALITY AND CARE Create the right first impression with a bespoke kitchen from expert craftsmen, David J Martin. any of us love nothing more than welcoming family and friends into our homes to share a delicious feast. But when our kitchens are tired and dated, or there simply isn’t enough space to put things, the blissful idea of cooking up a storm for your favourite people can suddenly become a chaotic nightmare. If you have ever been stood in the middle of your kitchen holding a burning-hot tray searching for available worktop space, or know the frustration of juggling baking dishes in and out of a too-small oven, it’s time for a revamp. Creating a bespoke kitchen is the ideal way to ensure each element is designed to suit your specific requirements and, at David J Martin, on Springvale Road in Sheffield, you can do just that. The experienced and friendly staff at David J Martin can help you realise your kitchen’s potential and David and his team of expert craftsmen will plan, design and build your perfect kitchen using the wood and finish of your choice. There are so many advantages to having furniture made to your exact specifications; bespoke units can help to utilise all available space, making your kitchen easier to enjoy. Whether you require additional worktop space for food preparation or clever storage solutions like deep drawers and pull-out shelves, David and his team can plan every component for you. If you simply want to change the appearance of your kitchen, updating the worktops and doors of existing units is the perfect way to dramatically transform a look, without the upheaval or expense of having a whole new kitchen fitted. Contemporary styles are as popular as ever and David now has a new design for handleless doors. With a concealed

The company DESIGNERS and MAKERS has built a fantastic reputation for providing quality, bespoke products with a consistent attention to detail. “We are not held to ransom by mass-produced products as we make everything from scratch,” David says. “We even make our own cutters for producing mouldings, which means you can add to your kitchen in years to come and we will still be able to match the designs.” As well as providing excellent products and kitchens, the company is highly regarded for its great customer and aftersales service. If you have any problems, queries or complaints, they will help to put them right – and that applies whether you’ve had your new kitchen for two weeks or ten years. It is a truly caring approach and, with much of the business’s work coming from customer recommendations, it is clearly a successful one. PROMOTIONCOLLECTIVE LEGAL SOLUTIONS
Plans for a Care Fees Cap “abandoned”… Here are five things you need to know about care fees funding. April 2016 should have seen the most significant changes in a generation to the law relating to the provision of social care, with the introduction of the second part of the Care Act 2014*. Here’s five things you need to know: 1) The Personal Expense Allowance – when an individual requires care and is means tested, the first thing to be taken to fund their care is their income. All an individual’s means testable income will be taken to fund their care, with just £24.40 per week (the Personal Expense Allowance) being left untouched… 2) The means test – this will be conducted by the relevant Local Authority when an individual needs to access care. The means test is an assessment of an individual’s assets (income, property, savings etc) to ascertain whether they should be funding their care themselves. The means test thresholds for capital assets were due to change in April 2016 but have now been “delayed” until 2020 so remain as follows: i) Assets less than £14,250 = your care will be funded in full by your Local Authority ii) Assets more than £23,250 = you will have to cover the cost of your care in full iii) Assets between £14,250 and £23,250 = you will have to make a contribution towards the cost of your care, which could be a very significant sum 3) The “funding cap” was also due to be introduced in April 2016. It was intended to limit the amount an individual will be required to pay towards their care at £72,000, but again that has been delayed to 2020 so there is currently still no cap in place. 4) Deferred Payment Agreements don’t mean you no longer have to sell your home to fund your care. Initial statements by Government ministers suggested there would be no need for anyone to sell their home to fund their care. However, the legislation actually introduces a nationwide scheme, called Deferred Payment Agreements, which could mean your home doesn’t need to be sold during your lifetime, but still could be sold after your death. Clearly there is a big difference. 5) Plan ahead – perhaps of most significance, you can opt to plan ahead and protect what you’ve worked hard for. Using a Trust, created under the terms of your Will or during your lifetime, can help protect your home and savings for future generations. However, for this planning to be effective, it must be done at a time when you are fit and healthy.
You need to take advice if… • You or your spouse/partner don’t yet have a Will. • You have a Will but it leaves everything to your spouse/partner. • You don’t have both kinds of Lasting Powers of Attorney set up. • You or your spouse/partner don’t have a pre-paid Funeral Plan. • You are divorced or widowed. • You have children. • You are concerned about what will happen and covering the costs if you need long term residential care.

Have you been caught on camera?
Welcome To My Office – Views from the roofs Simon Slater of Slater’s Aerial Services has a different ‘office view’ to most of us – a rooftop vista of Sheffield. Last month, he has been admiring the view in a very different part of the world. We asked you to send in your answers for the chance to win a Christmas hamper. All correct answers were put into a prize draw and a winner was chosen at random. Congratulations to Diane Gammons from Hillsborough who correctly guessed where Simon was last month – Corfu Town. Now back in Sheffield, can you guess exactly where in the S6 postcode area Simon was when he took these photographs? To find out, follow @SlatersAerials and @SixerRMC on Twitter – the answer will be revealed at the end of the month.

PROMOTIONSLIMMING WORLD

Super slimmers in North Sheffield lost a whopping 3,954 stones in 2015 – that’s the equivalent three double decker buses. he members, who attend groups every week across the area, follow Slimming World’s unique Food Optimising eating plan created by a team of expert nutritionists, which encourages them to fill up on satisfying foods such as pasta, rice, potatoes, lean meat and fish, pulses and fruit and veg. Julie Guihen, who has lost five stones to drop from a size 18 to a size 10, says: “I wanted to lose weight to help me conceive my son and not only did I do that, with the consent of my midwife, I managed to stay at the group and at a heathy weight whilst pregnant. When my son was born, I lost a whopping 1st 6lb – double his birth weight. The support I have received from Emma and the members of the Crookes groups has been amazing and that’s why I’ll be launching my own group on December 29 at Wesley Hall, Crookes, giving back some of the care and support I’ve received ” Consultant Donna from the Stockbridge groups says: “My Anne Paget lost members have lost the weight of a 3st and became tractor and reaching this milestone as a Slimming a group just proves the huge change World consultant that we’ve all made to our lives, some in Broomhill people who’ve lost big amounts of weight have probably even saved their lives.” Kirsty, who runs three groups every week, knows the support and encouragement each member gets in Image Therapy is key to their success. Tips and recipes are shared and, on top of that, the group has a lot of fun. Katie from the Foxhill group says: “The support and inspiration we get from our consultant Charlotte has also been

integral to our success. Because she lost weight herself, she understands the ups and downs of slimming and can offer us help and advice based on her own experience.” Christine says: “I’m delighted that my Hillsborough members have lost weight so beautifully. It has made a big difference to their lives and to their whole families’ lives and all of them are happier and healthier now.” Jane from the Broomhill group adds: “Filling up on lots of satisfying foods means you’re never hungry so I’ve never felt as though I was on a diet. Before joining Slimming World, I thought losing weight meant going to the gym and counting calories. But now I know it’s about making healthier choices about food and becoming a bit more active.” Consultant Vicky says: “There is no better feeling in the world than watching a member’s confidence grow as they start to lose weight… playing a part in changing people’s lives in the best job in the world” Jo Groves, who looks after the area and runs her own group in Stannington, says: “Slimming has never been more important. There are so many people in Sheffield who are so overwight and obese that it affects their lives, and we just want to help them get back on track.”

HOW TO SHOP THE JANUARY
SA L E S Everything you need to know about bagging a bargain or two in the New Year shopping frenzy. or bargain hunters, January is the very best time of year. Walking into your favourite shop to see so many discounts and special offers can be even more exciting than Christmas Day. But before you dive in head first, take a moment consider some important advice, which could save you even more money. Follow our tips and you’ll never find yourself with a wardrobe full of unworn clothes or a garage full of unused gadgets again.
F
SET YOUR PRIORITIES Before you set off, or go online, make a no-negotiation list to ensure you don’t end up with piles of things you don’t need or want, just for the sake of the bargain. If you’re really organised you’ll already know the key items you’re hoping to bag but, if not, jot down your must-haves and put your energy into getting these first. This will also keep you focused when there are a thousand other things to distract you.
STOCK UP ON NEW-SEASON TRENDS Fashion retailers often reduce the trendiest items the most, along with anything they didn’t get rid of in the summer sales. This is often where the best buys can be had. Do your homework on this summer’s key looks before you head out and you could save a fortune on pieces that will still be on-trend in months to come. Spring/summer 2016’s key styles are ruffles, mirror shines and bold stripes, so if you spy any pieces related to these themes, grab them before somebody else does.
TIME IT RIGHT Go either super early (as in online on Christmas Day) or at the very last minute. If there’s something you’ve had your eye on all year that is likely to be reduced, get in there as soon as you can before it’s snapped up. Alternatively, if you’re less bothered about the specifics – for example, if you’d like a new TV but don’t mind which one – leaving it until the last possible opportunity will probably get you a bigger discount as prices are slashed further towards the end of January.

CHECK THE RETURN POLICY January discounts tap into the most basic element of sales – urgency. The fear of missing out by not buying then and there is overwhelming but often leads to impulsive buying. The key here is to utilise the store’s return’s policy. Many shops allow you to return sales stock, even if it’s within fewer days than usual, so you can grab as much as you like and then try it all on at home when you’re more relaxed and can decide which items you definitely want. Just be sure to choose wisely and then return within the allotted time – yes, even if you like everything.
DO YOUR RESEARCH The beauty of the internet is that, before you even step foot outside your front door, you can go online to check the best prices. Not only will you be able to identify which shops are offering the best deals, but if you note down how much you can find something for online, you’ll also make sure you don’t pay over the odds in store.
SET A BUDGET
INVEST WISELY
It’s easy to get giddy at the sight of a 50-per-centoff ticket, but if it’s more than you were intending to spend, you won’t feel the full benefit. Keep a budget in mind and stick to it.
Higher quality items last far longer so, although you’re initially spending more, the cost-per-wear should even out in time. And really, what’s Christmas money for anyway?
DECK NEXT YEAR’S HALLS Unless you’re so super trendy that only the current season’s Christmas decorations will do, now is the time to buy anything festive-themed. From crackers to napkins, cards to baubles, shops will be desperate to get rid of whatever they didn’t sell before Christmas so there should be huge reductions.
START YOUR 2016 CHRISTMAS SHOPPING NOW! There is significant risk with this, so don’t say we didn’t warn you. And don’t even think about secondguessing what your kids might want next Christmas. But for the more reliable gifts of a tie and socks for your dad or slippers for your grandparents, this is the perfect opportunity to save on the classics.

GO WEST
Fiona Barber finds her feet in the new gastronomic capital of Spain.
watched cautiously, suspended in silence, as the newborn calf attempted to wobble to its feet for the very first time. Body quivering, eyes wide and legs bent into dangerous angles that only the youngest of bones can reach. On this occasion though, it wasn’t meant to be; gravity one, calf nil. The scene before me wouldn’t have been out of place on a James Herriot set, but far from the flower-rich hay meadows of the Yorkshire Dales, I was in the dehesa (grasslands) of Extremadura – a western part of Spain that borders Andalusia to the south, and Portugal to the west – surrounded by acres of olive and acorn trees, on an Iberian pig farm. Extremadura is nationally and internationally renowned for its jamón ibérico (Iberian ham) and I’d had my first taste of this delicacy the previous evening, in the tranquil surroundings of the Hacienda Arroyo La Plata hotel. Sat on the restaurant terrace with a glass of red from the nearby Ribera del Guadiana region I watched the rich orange sun sink beneath the banks of the River Ardilai. Perhaps my judgement was swayed by the idyllic setting, but this was by far the best ham I’d ever tasted. As we explored the rustic fields of La Roma pig farm in a tourguide-driven 4x4, we learned the secret to really great jamón lies in diet and exercise: the more acorns and walking, the better. The safaris, run by GeoActiva, show every part of the jamón process and so, after meeting farmer Felipe, it was off to the slaughter house and drying rooms just down the road. Here, the jamón is cured in huge rooms filled with salt, dried in several other rooms and finally, sweated in a natural cave. This painstaking process can take up to four years, but the result is definitely worth the effort. It’s not just the preparation of the ham that is important either, but also the way in which it’s cut. Master cutters spend years

practising their delicate craft, because the thickness actually affects the taste – the thinner the better. I was lucky enough to not only sample jamón A newborn calf is encouraged sliced by a master to walk by its mother cutter, but also have a go myself. It turned out I was far better at eating than slicing. Cuisine in Extremadura stretches far beyond just jamón though, and there’s no better way to explore what’s on offer than with a guided gastro tour of Cáceres. This historic hub is a charming oldfashioned Spanish city where you are still offered a pincho (a small snack) with every drink. It’s a wonder how – with its gorgeous old town, art galleries, museums, bars, restaurants and World of Music, Arts and Dance festival – it has remained relatively under the radar. But in 2015, it was elected as Spain’s gastronomy capital, and this hidden gem was exposed in all its glory. We met José from L&P Travel in the bustling old town and he took us to three bars and restaurants throughout the evening. Each offered something entirely different, from the busy open kitchen of Restaurante Cayena, to the modern Mastro Piero Gastro Bar, and – my favourite – the more traditional and almost cavernous cove of Tapería Calenda. Here, we were treated to delicious pork cheek ravioli on mushroom soil, Iberian ham with pea sauce and puff pastry and a wonderful take on miniature fish

It’s worth mentioning this company also arrange tailor-made holidays and trips, so whether it’s sport, food, nature, or action adventure you’re after, they can arrange absolutely everything for you. As well as cuisine, Extremadura is also renowned for its rich history, and marks left by Roman, Arab and Jewish civilizations, among others, can be seen Fiona’s attempt at slicing throughout. SIXERLOOKING BACK
Words: Fiona Barber
HIGHLIGHTS OF OF THE YEAR It’s been another busy 12 months here at Sixer, and as we dive straight into the New Year, we’ve taken a moment to reflect on the people and places that made 2015 so special for us.
January Sheffield doctor Jenny Stephenson published The History of Walkley House Medical Centre detailing the fascinating timeline of her surgery, which was built back in 1870. Jenny collected stories and memoirs of patients, staff and colleagues, explored archives and interviewed local historians to uncover the medical centre’s fascinating past. The book detailed how the surgery survived many challenges, including cholera, influenza, smallpox, two world wars, as well as insight into the social, political and medical changes of the time.
March In March we spoke to Hillsborough lad Daniel Eborall, who travelled all the way to America to fulfil his footballing dream. When Daniel realised he wasn’t going to get his big break in England he began to look further afield and a scholarship in America provided the perfect opportunity. Here, among other teams, he played for the William Carey Crusaders – ranked number four in the nation – and achieved the record for the most goals scored in one season; an impressive 20 goals in 18 games (all the while studying for a marketing and business degree). When opportunities aren’t being handed to you on a plate, a bit of digging in the right places, hard work and talent can go a long way – as Daniel’s example demonstrates perfectly!
Less than a year on from the Tour De France it was time for another huge cycling event – the Tour De Yorkshire. The three-day international cycling event, run by welcome to Yorkshire and backed by British Cycling, took place 1-3 May and challenged the world’s best riders to tackle some of the region’s best cycling terrain. In the run-up to the event Sheffield legend Malcolm Elliott said: “While we may not have the huge mountains of the Alps or the Pyrenees, what we’ve got here is a succession of closely spaced, tough climbs that really sort the men from the boys.” Now one of county’s favourite events, the Tour De Yorkshire will take place this year 29 April-1 May.

In February, Sixer writer Adam Kay travelled to Soho to meet Sheffield legend Peter Stringfellow to discover what life is now like for the 74-year-old King of Clubs. Far from being the Lothario persona for which he is known, Peter claimed to be a reformed character, with his only interests being family and business. He talked about being happily married with a baby daughter, but remained as ambitious as ever, with plans to expand the Stringfellows brand across Europe. He said: “I have been ecstatically happy many, many times in my life, but I can’t honestly say I’ve been any happier than I am now.”

In May the spotlight was on Bradfield as we looked at how the Bradfield Music Festival attracts some of the best classical performers in the world. The 900-year-old St Nicholas’s Church in High Bradfield provides a spectacular setting, as well as fantastic Festival secretary Keith Hoyland said: “It’s a unique setting with a unique sound. Sometimes people don’t believe that we get the artists we get. We’ve developed our own little festival community over the years and people from all over the UK come for a week’s holiday, so we have to put on a good show.”

October
June June saw us look towards the picturesque village of Oughtibridge as it was getting ready for its biggest day of the year – the Oughtibridge Gala. This traditional British fair with a modern twist has been going around 35 years and has donated approximately £16,500 to local groups over the last five. Last year Oughtibridge Brass Band Club celebrated its 125th anniversary and they lead a parade through the village into Coronation Park. As well as the usual hook-andduck and tug-of-war, more adrenaline-fuelled activities were added to the agenda with Adventures Are Us, which included a ropeway over the River Don and abseiling.
October saw us look at the upcoming remembrance activities in Bradfield, including the Poppy Memorial Trail at St Nicholas’ Church. The trail was made up of red plaques with written messages addressed to deceased loved-ones, which surrounded the church, and giant stunning floating poppies were projected onto the side of the church. Organiser Sue Hague said: “I was working with the local World War Heritage Group and one of the problems they had was that many stories about the individuals who fought in the war are lost. By collating all these plaques, we can make history.”
November
July
In November we took a look at the art scene in S6 and discovered if you scratch below the surface, the area is thriving. “This area has one of the highest concentrations of creatives in the city, but no one knows about them,” said Karen Sherwood, the founder of the Cupola Gallery. We also met Marie Turner, cofounder of local art group Underbank Community Group in Stannington, who said: “Many people tell me this is the best art group they have been to. We give constructive criticism to help each other improve.” The group began 15 years ago and has become so popular there is now a waiting list.
In July we visited the new site of Sheffield Retired Greyhound Trust (SRGT), to find out what happens when a greyhound has had his racing day. The new facility at Rotherham Gate Lodge in Wortley was built by Designer Kennels, with funding provided by Owlerton Stadium. Despite being ex-racers, it turned out that the dogs weren’t as energetic as we expected. “It’s like owning a big cat,” said kennel manager Roy. “People think they need a lot of exercise, but that’s a myth. As pets, they require two 20minute walks a day, unless it’s raining, in which case they’d much rather stay inside.”
August August was a particularly special month as we celebrated Sixer’s 21st anniversary. To commemorate the occasion, Bradfield Brewery created a special celebratory ale and we looked back through the archives at some of the stories and people we had written about over the years. From fun, local
September In September we focused on the Sheffield Wednesday Community Programme, which supports several local charities and runs social projects to give opportunities to deprived young people in the S5 and S6 area. We spoke to former Sheffield Wednesday player John Pearson, the charity’s events coordinator, who said: “Every day is different. I work with some fantastic people for some great causes so it’s win-win. We have held many successful events and the support I’ve had from everyone has been unbelievable.”

features – such as the tastiest pork sandwich – to more serious topics – including how local businesses bounced back after the flood of June 2007 – we had covered it all. As part of the celebrations, we also came up with 21 things to see and do in North Sheffield and caught up with some of the area’s leading business people to find out what they were doing when Sixer made its debut 21 years ago.
December In December we put the artistic skills of Year 5 and Year 6 pupils of Wharncliffe Side Primary School to the test and asked them to design an advert for Powers Martial Arts. Owner Paul Powers said: “I was so impressed with the work the kids put in. Some looked like they had spent hours making them and the thought that went in was just incredible.” After much deliberation three winners were chosen and each was offered a private kick- boxing lesson as a thank you for taking part.

BITS & PIECES Sporting success for Wharncliffe Side Primary Wharncliffe Side Primary School has recently been awarded the Silver School Games Award. The main aim of the award is to increase the number of young people participating in sports and create opportunities for all pupils to engage in extracurricular sporting activities. In addition to this, Wharncliffe Side Primary School has trained a number of pupils in Key Stage 2 to support sports at school by becoming coaches. Imogen, a pupil who regularly writes a sporting blog and has recently become a coach, said: “I like getting people involved in sports.” Wharncliffe Side School are also keen to promote further links
with local sports clubs. They have already worked with Sheffield United FC and Stocksbridge rugby club this year to deliver training at the school and these lessons have proven to be very popular among the pupils. PE co-ordinator Nigel Hartley has worked closely with staff and sports coaches to encourage and inspire young children to develop their skills and talents and to find enjoyment in a range of sports in and outside school.
New menu at The Wisewood Inn
Wisewood’s big switch-on The Friends of Wisewood and District held a successful Christmas event when the lord mayor, Councillor Talib Hussain switched on the Christmas tree lights by the RIVA building at the corner of Laird Road and Rural Lane. The Stannington Training Band played Christmas songs and a large crowd of people gathered to sing carols and enjoy some free fruit punch and mince pies. Father Christmas handed out presents and spoke with the local children, and even brought his reindeer along for the event. The RIVA project provided refreshments in the Old Library Café and there were a number of stalls including a tombola, water and wine stall and books for sale. The Old Library Café is open from Monday to Wednesday, with a hot meal and bingo session on Fridays.
The fully refurbished Wisewood Inn has launched a new menu, which has been skilfully put together by general manager Marco Foletti and head chef Gabriel Gonzalez Costa. Taking influences from England, France, Spain and Italy, Gabriel has something for all tastebuds. Delicious flavours are combined in the 12 inch homemade artisan pizzas and the new gourmet burgers, or try the tempting tapas menu - a speciality of Gabriel’s. Right now a new signature dish, The Wisewurst is being showcased; half a metre of German-style sausage served on a bed of caramelised onions on a soft, open baguette, with spicy mustard. Coupled with an excellent selection of German beers, real ale and a great atmosphere, The Wisewood stands out as a unique and worthy place to visit.

Tuneful twosome raise £25,000 for cancer charity A musical duo called TOFFEE Music (Two Old Fellas For Evening Entertainment) have raised over £25,000 for their local cancer hospital in just four years, by playing to a diverse range of audiences across the region. In 2012, former head teachers, Mike Lydiat and his friend of 20 years, Dave Markham started performing concerts across venues in Sheffield to raise funds for Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity, after Dave was diagnosed with incurable prostate cancer. From left: Mike Father-of-three Dave from Lydiat, Christy Stannington said: “We had Beardshaw of The Ship Inn and Dave absolutely no idea when we started Markham tip their out, that we would go on to raise £25K target at such an unbelievable amount of The Ship Inn money. “As a region, we really don’t know how lucky we are to have this specialised cancer hospital right on our doorstep, and the more we can all do to support this dedicated charity, the more hope we give to thousands of people fighting cancer now and in the future.” Weston Park Hospital is one of only a handful of specialist cancer hospitals in England and treats patients from all over South Yorkshire, North Nottinghamshire and North Derbyshire – a population of almost 1.8million people. TOFFEE Music, who now boast a collection of over 550 songs, some which they have written themselves, play everything from nursery rhymes to vaudeville, and with a variety of instruments, they can easily tailor performances to individual requirements. At a recent gig at The Ship Inn at Shalesmoor, the duo officially reached the £25,000 fundraising milestone for TWEET the cancer charity and say reaching TWEET such a significant amount will only You can follow spur them on to do more. Sixer on Twitter: @SixerRMC With gigs and performances booked right up until the New Year, Mike and Dave are looking forward to celebrating their successes, as well as planning further fundraising events in 2016. This year, the cancer charity will be funding various projects to enable the continued improvement of Weston Park Hospital; including the expansion of research studies, improving the way cancer treatments are delivered and supporting the ongoing care provisions of patients and their families affected by cancer. Charity fundraiser, Sarah Cross said: “Dave is living proof that a cancer diagnosis isn’t necessarily a reason to slow down or stop living life to the full and we couldn’t be more grateful to both him and Mike for raising such a tremendous amount of money” To find out more about TOFFEE Music or to book them for your event, visit www.toffeemusic.co.uk.
