Searching for a winter break in the UK? Look no further...
elcome to the January edition of Sixer magazine. The new year brings new hope and, let’s be honest, we’re all hoping for some kind of return to normality in the coming months. Before we get too carried away, we took a look back at what was a unique year to say the least and some of the amazing people we met along the way. Moving into 2021, with our health and wellbeing in mind, we look at how you can take positive steps, from eating a balanced diet to quitting smoking. Travel has been limited over the last 12 months and could still be curtailed in the short-term. We look at winter breaks in the UK, from possible ski destinations to island retreats. Closer to home, the winter sales are in full swing - read our tops on how you can bag yourself a bargain. Elsewhere we have your usual mix of local news, fashion, beauty, homes and gardens and motoring. We wish you a happy new year and look forward to seeing you next month.

How to shop the
winter sale TOP TIPS TO HELP YOU SAVE MONEY AND BAG A BARGAIN.
or bargain hunters, winter sales can be a thrilling experience. But before you dive in head first, take a moment consider some important advice, which could save you even more money. Follow our tips and you’ll never find yourself with a wardrobe full of unworn clothes or a garage full of unused gadgets again.
F
Set your priorities
Before you set off, or go online, make a no-negotiation list to ensure you don’t end up with piles of things you don’t need or want, just for the sake of the bargain. If you’re really organised you’ll already know the key items you’re hoping to bag but, if not, jot down your must-haves and put your energy into getting these first. This will also keep you focused when there are a thousand other things to distract you. Stock up on new-season trends
Fashion retailers often reduce the trendiest items the most, along with anything they didn’t get rid of in the January sales. This is often where the best buys can be had. Do your homework on key looks before you head 24 www.rmcmedia.co.uk
out and you could save a fortune on pieces that will still be on-trend in months to come.
items you definitely want. Just be sure to choose wisely and then return within the allotted time – yes, even if you like absolutely everything.
Time it right
Go either super early or at the very last minute. If there’s something you’ve had your eye on all year that is likely to be reduced, get in there as soon as you can before it’s snapped up. Alternatively, if you’re less bothered about the specifics – for example, if you’d like a new TV but don’t mind which one – leaving it until the last possible opportunity will probably get you a bigger discount as prices are slashed further towards the end of the sale. Check the return policy
Big discounts tap into the most basic element of sales – urgency. The fear of missing out by not buying then and there is overwhelming but often leads to impulsive buying. The key here is to utilise the store’s return’s policy. Many shops allow you to return sales stock, even if it’s within fewer days than usual, so you can grab as much as you like and then try it all on at home when you’re more relaxed and can decide which
Do your research
The beauty of the internet is that, before you even step foot outside your front door, you can go online to check the best prices. Not only will you be able to identify which shops are offering the best deals, but if you note down how much you can find something for online, you’ll also make sure you don’t pay over the odds in store. Set a budget
It’s easy to get giddy at the sight of a 50per-cent-off ticket, but if it’s more than you were intending to spend, you won’t feel the full benefit. Keep a budget for each item in mind and stick to it. Invest wisely
Higher quality items last far longer so, although you’re initially spending more, the Higher quality items last far longer so, although you’re initially spending more, the cost-per-wear should even out in time.

Bring your ideas to life WITH AN ONSITE WORKSHOP, PA JEWELLERY CAN CREATE TRULY ONE-OFF PIECES FOR YOU. ewellery will often be amongst our most treasured possessions, holding a deeply personal connection and great sentimental value. At PA Jewellery we understand how important it is to get just the right piece. In addition to stocking beautiful jewellery from our wide network of suppliers, our onsite workshop allows us to create one-off, bespoke pieces to meet your individual requirements; if you are looking for something unusual or have a specific design in mind we’d be delighted to help. Our experienced jewellers and goldsmiths can discuss your design and advise on how to bring your ideas to life. Because our workshop adjoins our showroom you will be able to review your piece at important stages throughout the process to ensure everything is just right. If your design requires gemstones you are often able to choose these yourself, allowing you to select the perfect colour or shape. The piece we most regularly make as a bespoke item is wedding bands, often handmade to sit neatly with an engagement ring. Whether a simple ‘v’ or intricately curved design, having a bespoke ring allows the band to nestle
J
perfectly with the contours of the engagement ring so they make a perfect pair. We have also made many unusual pieces over the year including the one-ofa-kind hand-carved dragon bangle pictured! Many of the pieces we handmake for customers recycle sentimental materials. This may be a diamond ring that you have inherited or an old piece you no longer like the style of. Creating something new from these treasured items can give them a whole new lease of life. One of the most popular ways to do this is crafting wedding bands out of sentimental family gold. This is a perfect way to have absent loved ones close on your big day and can make your most precious ring even more special. We can melt down your gold and make the new band in your chosen width and profile. This can be finished with a pattern, set with diamonds or simply polished for a classic look. Pictured alongside this article are several pieces we have handmade for our customers; inspired by a design they have
seen, to accommodate their own gemstone or to make use of family gold. If you have an idea for a bespoke piece, we would love to discuss it with you. At present we are working by appointment to help maintain safe distancing in our showroom. Call 0114 266 9253 for an appointment or email gems@pajewellery.com to make a start on your enquiry before you visit. RETROSPECTIVE
Looking back 2020 WAS A STRANGE YEAR BUT WE DID MEET SOME INTERESTING PEOPLE AND HEARD SOME INCREDIBLE STORIES. SO LET’S PAUSE FOR A MOMENT AND LOOK BACK AT SOME OF THE HIGHLIGHTS THAT MADE THE LAST 12 MONTHS SO UNIQUE.
January We began the year by interviewing Kate Bottley, known nowadays across the country as the vicar who appeared on Gogglebox and went on to carve out a successful career as one of the nation’s most popular and instantly recognisable TV and radio personalities. Kate grew up on Freedom Road and went to Walkley Primary then Walkley Juniors. Despite the media whirl post-Gogglebox, Kate remains a reverend. “That does not get taken away, I just don’t have a parish,” she says. “I’m like a supply vicar these days, going to lots of different churches when the regular vicar is ill or on holiday. So I get to meet lots of lovely people while managing to avoid the finance and admin and the tricky stuff that comes with being a parish priest. It’s the best of both worlds.”

February In February we focused on a group of determined charity supporters from across Yorkshire and Derbyshire who headed to Tanzania to climb Africa’s highest peak, Mount Kilimanjaro, for Sheffield Children’s Hospital. The compassionate trekkers included nurses, teachers, businesspeople and families who have been helped by the hospital. They started as strangers with one goal, to make the facilities at Sheffield Children’s the best they could by raising lots of money. The Kilimanjaro trek took seven days and featured climbs of over 1,000m, taking in difficult altitudes as well as tricky climates.
April Hillsborough Golf Club reached a proud milestone in 2020, celebrating its centenary. While some of the celebrations will have to be put on hold because of the Coronavirus, the year has been marked by the production of a splendid book – Hillsborough Golf Club, The First 100 Years. Play commenced on the course on 25 March 1920, over 200 people applied for membership and the course was officially opened on 29 May 1920 with 15 holes (the remaining holes were completed the following year). Renowned as being one of the best golfing venues in the North of England and set in the beautiful hills of Sheffield, the course gives some truly fantastic and panoramic views over the Steel City and surrounding countryside.
March Stannington Players has existed in the heart of the community since 1951. Rachel Martin spoke to writer and producer Steve Atkinson (above) ahead of their upcoming production, ‘Allo ‘Allo. “We’re very aware that it ran for eight years on TV and that it is still regularly shown, so people are still very familiar with what the characters look like and what they sound like. We’re staying as close to the original as we can and though we can’t hope to recreate those wonderful iconic actors, we will do our best,” Steve said. “Although Stannington has grown considerably, it still has a strong village feel about it. Certainly, the people here are fiercely proud of their identity and I only hope that we can, in our small way help toward that feeling.” www.rmcmedia.co.uk 35

May/June As the government enforced a national lockdown at the end of March, we took the difficult decision to halt the production of our magazines - thankfully not for too long! Instead we filled our time with homeschooling, walking, painting, decorating, gardening and, thanks to the glorious weather, lots of barbecues.
July As we returned to the (home) office after lockdown restrictions were eased, we spoke to some local businesses about their own experiences. Their answers were surprisingly different. Heather Tingle (below) is the owner/postmistress of Flask End and Bradfield Post Office and feels that the lockdown has been particularly difficult for the vulnerable and those that have been shielding at hom. “We are so used to physically popping into see people and having that human connection that staying away from them through fear has been heartbreaking,” she said. “As a community S6 has very quickly adapted to replace that contact in wonderful caring ways which has been a delight to see. I think it’s really heightened the sense of community, as well as genuine gratitude for NHS and appreciation of our keyworkers.”
August After being confined to quarters for the last few months. we were itching to venture further afield. With restrictions relaxing, getting out for the day or longer – overnight stays were now allowed – and was much-needed. Whatever the weather, we discovered our region is filled with lots to do, from national parks and nature reserves to theme parks and water sports. You can see animals in the wild, head deep underground and discover the legend of one of the world’s most famous outlaws… the opportunities are endless. From country houses and gardens to museums and theme parks, we had a look at some of places you could have visited over the summer months and beyond.
September In September we spoke to Brian Smith who introduced us to the Bradfield Brewery Sheffield Steeldogs and explained how they’re trying to shape the stars of the future. The Bradfield Brewery Sheffield Steeldogs is a semiprofessional ice hockey club which has been running for ten years and is in the second tier of the sport in the UK – the NIHL National Division. Their home is in the heart of South Yorkshire at iceSheffield, which can hold up to 1,500 spectators. Their ethos is based on helping develop and giving opportunities to local youngsters through the sport. As a result each season their roster is brimming with former Sheffield Academy players.

November Finding affordable and delicious wine that is accessible can be a genuine struggle. Thankfully, not only do we have a growing amount of independent wine merchants, supermarkets have really stepped up their game in recent years. In all major supermarkets, you will now find their ‘selections’ where each supermarket has recruited wine experts to find, select and buy top quality wines to improve their offerings. In November we introduced new wine columnist, Jamie Green, who navigated a path through those supermarket shelves for us and picked out two crowd-pleasing wines, an Italian Pinot Grigio from Sainsbury’s and Australian Grenache from Aldi.
October There was sad news in the autumn as Sixer noted with regret the passing of well-known local character Jeff Slator. His granddaughter Evie Ward-Drummond paid special tribute to a man whose name was familiar to thousands. “He was a local cheeky chappie whose life was a real tale of rags to riches,” she said. “At 17, fed up of working in the mines, Jeff decided to sign up to the army. There was one problem. He was too young, so he forged his papers and soon after was posted in Malta where he served for three years. “Upon his return he met his wife-to-be Marian at a local dance. With her support, Jeff opened his first furniture shop in 1972 under a sign proclaiming a name new to the area – ‘Mr Slator Furnishings’.”
December In recent years, there has been a notable rise in artisan brands, with more people valuing quality over quantity. The notion that more people are now leaning towards buying locallyproduced, handmade confectionary in particular is something that Sue from Cocoa Spink recognises. Based in Sheffield, Sue is an artisan chocolate-maker who set up her business, Cocoa Spink, in 2017. Since then, Sue has created an impressive range of chocolates and treats, all of which are handmade in her kitchen. “I’m currently busy making hot chocolate stirrers and chocolate lollipops – both of which are perfect for table presents, stocking fillers and Christmas Eve boxes. Letterbox bars are also a great idea and price point (around £6 which includes p&p),” she told us. www.rmcmedia.co.uk 37

What is MediSculpt Therapy? G&M HEALTHCARE CAN HELP YOU ACHIEVE YOUR WEIGHT LOSS GOALS. ediSculpt Therapy is a non-surgical, very low calorie weight loss program which can combat obesity and some chronic medical conditions like type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, high cholesterol, hypertension and sleep apnoea. Medisculpt Therapy comprises of three main components; the diet, which is based on high protein foods with low carbohydrate and low fat contents, and two body contouring treatments – LPG Endermologie and Vanquish MeTM or Exilis Elite machines. The body contouring treatment LPG Endermologie is used for skin tightening in order to prevent the development of loose and sagging skin during and after the rapid weight loss. The second body contouring machine is a radio frequency machine for body fat reduction. G&M Healthcare has both of these machines and the choice of which one to use depends on the treatment package and area of the body requiring treatment. The radio frequency machines result in a significant fat reduction in targeted areas like the tummy, thighs or arms. These treatments are carried out weekly by fully-trained therapists and last about 30-40 minutes each. In total you need about 75-90 minutes per week for your treatments. Weight loss with MediSculpt Therapy is safe, efficient and rapid. The weight loss progress is constantly monitored by a qualified GP and fully trained therapists who check weight loss progress, blood pressure, body fat content, metabolic rates and do blood tests on a regular basis. With regard to the results, they know from experience that a female patient will typically lose one stone a month and a male patient will typically lose one to one and a half stones a month. MediSculpt Therapy consists of six phases, which deliver amazing, safe, efficient and sustainable weight loss. During phase 1 of MediSculpt Therapy the diet comprises of five meals and one snack a day. Protein foods are filling, hence patients don’t feel hungry. To supplement the diet some fruit and vegetables are also allowed on the diet. G&M Healthcare also do metabolic tests to check your metabolic rates and also provide supplements to ensure you don’t lack in essential minerals like magnesium, potassium, sodium chloride, calcium and trace minerals. Once the phase 1 target is achieved after losing about 70 per cent of your target weight, patients are moved onto phase 2 where ‘normal foods’, like weighed amounts of chicken, meat, fish and diary like eggs, are introduced. Once 90 per cent of your target weight loss is achieved patients are weaned to measured amounts of normal eating on phase 3. Thereafter phases 4-6 are stabilisation phases to ensure that optimum weaning off from the diet is achieved without putting on back the weight you have lost. After the stabilisation phase there is a life-long maintenance programme where G&M Healthcare six weekly follow ups for review by a therapist who measures your weight and body fat composition. Follow up is then 3-6 monthly for one year or as required thereafter.
M
Kerry Norris Lost 7st on Medisculpt Therapy The cost of the program depends on the package you choose. There are three price packages – basic, standard and deluxe. All consist of your consultation fee (£100) and blood test fee (£100) followed by the package fees. Supplement prices are £50/month but vary depending on the package you choose. The basic package is £125/week for only food. The standard package is £250/week for food and body contouring treatments with LPG Endermologie and Vanquish or Exilis Elite. The deluxe package is £300/week and includes food, body contouring treatments, supplements, 4 weekly reviews and blood tests. Recent studies from the Diabetes Remission Clinical Trial (DiRECT), published by G Thom et al in Glasgow in collaboration with the NHS in September this year and by Yiqoao Xin et al in May 2020, have shown that very low calorie diets can cause remission in people with early type 2 Diabetes Mellitus of less than six years since onset. The programme is now being rolled out on a bigger trial of 5,000 people in the UK. G&M Healthcare is offering a free informal consultation with their GP, so if you would like to learn more and have your weight and body fat composition checked, please call 0114 233 5000, text them on 07944 629727 or email g.m.healthcarereception@gmail.com. Take positive steps in 2021 SIMPLE CHANGES AT HOME CAN MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE. HERE’S A FEW TIPS ON HOW TO START THE NEW YEAR IN THE RIGHT FRAME OF MIND. ou’ve heard the saying before, and whether it fills you with refreshed energy or makes you roll your eyes, hitting the restart button on a few major aspects of your lifestyle can be a great way to inject some positivity into 2021. Whether that means improving your mental wellbeing, eating and sleeping better or giving something up, we’re here to help. Whatever it is that prompts you to make that promise to yourself, it’s likely because you desire one of the most fundamental and basic human emotions – to be happier. Your thoughts, actions and perceptions are what dictate how happy you feel, which in turn means that we are responsible for our own happiness. Take this responsibility seriously and you can easily start to do things that naturally boost your mood. To help you to get started, here are some simple things you can do to up your mood and beat the New Year blues.
Y
Sleep and tiredness Feeling exhausted is so common that it has its own acronym - TATT which stands for ‘tired all the time’. The reasons are usually obvious and include too many late nights, long hours spent at work and children keeping you up at night. But tiredness and exhaustion that goes on for a long time can affect your ability to get on and enjoy life. In today’s 24/7 ‘always on’ world we often try to cram too much into our daily lives and, to try and stay on top of things, we sometimes consume too much alcohol or caffeine, or eat sugary and high-fat snacks on the go rather than sitting down for a proper meal. They’re all factors in causing fatigue and should be considered. 42 www.rmcmedia.co.uk
Quit smoking Smoking is bad for your health, but exactly how will stopping make life better? Firstly, it helps you breath more easily. In your 20s and 30s, the effect of smoking on your lung capacity may not be noticeable until you go for a run, but lung capacity naturally diminishes with age. In later years, having maximum lung capacity can mean the difference between having an active, healthy old age and wheezing when you go for a walk or climb the stairs. There is evidence to show that stopping smoking gives you more energy while the withdrawal from nicotine between cigarettes can heighten feelings of stress. Giving up can also improve your smell and taste and aid younger-looking skin. Half of all long-term smokers die early from smokingrelated diseases, including heart disease, lung cancer and chronic bronchitis. Men who quit smoking by the age of 30 add 10 years to their life. People who kick the habit at 60 add 3 years to their life. In other words, it’s never too late to benefit from stopping. Being smoke-free not only adds years to your life, but also greatly improves your chances of a disease-free, mobile, happier old age.

FIVE STEPS to mental wellbeing Evidence suggests there are five steps you can take to improve your mental health and wellbeing. Trying these things could help you feel more positive and able to get the most out of life. 1. CONNECT WITH OTHER PEOPLE
Good relationships are important for your mental wellbeing as they can help you to build a sense of belonging and self-worth, give you an opportunity to share positive experiences, and provide emotional support and allow you to support others. 2. BE PHYSICALLY ACTIVE
Being active is not only great for your physical health and fitness, evidence shows it can also improve your mental wellbeing too. It can raise your self-esteem, help you to set goals and challenges and cause chemical changes in your brain which can help to positively change your mood. 3. LEARN NEW SKILLS
Research shows that learning new skills can also improve your mental wellbeing by boosting our selfconfidence, helping you to build a sense of purpose, and help you to connect with others. 4. GIVE TO OTHERS
Acts of giving and kindness, however small, can improve your mental wellbeing by creating positive feelings and a sense of reward, give you a feeling or purpose and self-worth, help you to connect with other people. 5. PAY ATTENTION TO THE PRESENT MOMENT
Paying more attention to the present moment can improve your mental wellbeing. This includes your thoughts and feelings, your body and the world around you. Some people call this awareness “mindfulness”. Mindfulness can help you enjoy life more and understand yourself better. It can positively change the way you feel about life and how you approach challenges.
Eating a balanced diet Eating a healthy, balanced diet is an important part of maintaining good health, and can help you feel your best. This means eating a wide variety of foods in the right proportions, and consuming the right amount of food and drink to achieve and maintain a healthy body weight. Fruit and vegetables are a great place to start. As a good source of vitamins and minerals and fibre, they should make up just over a third of the food you eat each day. It’s recommended that you eat at least five portions of a variety of fruit and vegetables every day; they can be fresh, frozen, canned, dried or juiced. There’s evidence that people who achieve this target have a lower risk of heart disease, stroke and some cancers. Starchy foods should make up just over a third of everything you eat. This means your meals should be based on these foods. Choose wholegrain or wholemeal varieties of starchy foods, such as brown rice, wholewheat pasta, and brown, wholemeal or higher fibre white bread. They contain more fibre, and usually more vitamins and minerals, than white varieties. Milk and dairy foods, such as cheese and yoghurt, are good sources of protein. They also contain calcium, which helps keep your bones healthy. Go for lower fat and lower sugar products where possible. Beans, pulses, fish, eggs, meat and other proteins are essential for the body to grow and repair itself. They’re also good sources of a range of vitamins and minerals. Meat is a good source of protein, vitamins and minerals, including iron, zinc and B vitamins. It’s also one of the main sources of vitamin B12. Choose lean cuts and skinless poultry whenever possible to cut down on fat. Try to eat less red and processed meat like bacon, ham and sausages. Eggs and fish are also good sources of protein, and contain many vitamins and minerals. Oily fish is particularly rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Pulses, including beans, peas and lentils, are naturally very low in fat and high in fibre, protein, vitamins and minerals. Nuts are high in fibre, and unsalted nuts make a good snack. But they do still contain high levels of fat, so eat them in moderation. The NHS has myriad ways to help you achieve a better life balance. Slimming World success Back in April, like so many others Karen Shelton Hall was furloughed from her job. She says: “I wasn’t very active at all. Always feeling tired, I decided to make some changes and started to take daily exercise, just doing short walks and slowly building myself up for longer distances. Each week I set myself new challenges until I’ve reached, on average, ten miles a day and 20 each Friday.” Karen has walked an amazing 1,593 miles around Sheffield since March this year and is going to carry on her activity as she knows it’s the key to long-term weight loss success. Karen says: Karen has lost an amazing 4st 7lb and has free lifetime membership. “My fitness levels have increased immensely and I wouldnt have been able to walk ten miles a day before. “Now, I am far more confident, outgoing, and happy, and have a real passion for helping and supporting others along their weight loss journey. I’m taking up the opportunity to become a Slimming World Consultant at the Hillsborough morning groups at Tabernacle Church on Wednesdays and Saturdays where along with the group we can provide support, encouragement, and inspiration to anyone who steps through the doors just like I been given.” 44 www.rmcmedia.co.uk
The team at Belmont House Nursing Home in Stocksbridge have been celebrating their annual Country Court Staff Awards. There were over 1,000 nominations across the group from staff and residents and their families. This year it was clear how much families appreciated the efforts of staff to keep their loved ones safe and how much staff had supported each other throughout the pandemic. At Belmont House Nursing Home in Stocksbridge winners were home manager Joanne Coldwell, senior carers Julie Hefferan and Jane Whiting and a special commendation for activity coordinator Adele Wilkinson. A family member who nominated Adel for an award commented “Adele is a very caring, thoughtful person. She gets the residents involved with activities which they seem to really enjoy and is very important for their well-being. She takes time to listen to them and is very patient and calming in her approach. Mum is very fond of Adele and enjoys spending time with her.”
Cupola Gallery “We all enjoy a bargain – I know I do! The ‘Under The Bed Sale’ offers art lovers the chance to find original art at the fraction of the price you would normally expect,” said Karen Sherwood, director and founder of Cupola Gallery. For those who do not know, The Under The Bed Sale evolved out of a conversation with an artist friend, Lyn Hodnett, who many years ago invited Karen to view her work and pulled out a load of older work from under her bed. When Karen asked whether she could exhibit these pieces, Lyn said ‘no’ as they were out of date and no longer fitted with her current work. However, when Karen asked her if she could sell them, Lyn replied that she definitely would! However, how could she sell them if she wasn’t prepared to exhibit them? – to solve this dilemma, the Under The Bed Sale was born. The sale has grown year on year from its early beginnings nearly 30 years ago. The sale is a chance for artists to sell older or early work and seconds that are just to good to throw in the bin. Not just pictures – painting, printmaking, glass, sculpture, ceramics, jewellery and everything in between! Prices start at £1 and are capped at £350 so come on down and grab a bargain.

Income generator A POSITIVE PROPERTY MARKET IS NOT JUST GREAT NEWS FOR HOMEOWNERS BUT FOR INVESTORS TOO, SAYS ROCHELLE GILBURN OF GILBURN INVESTMENT GROUP. f all the negative things to come out of 2020, one positive was the housing market, with prices generally holding their own and even increasing in some areas, all in the midst of a pandemic. This is not just great news for homeowners but great news for investors too. Rochelle Gilburn is the managing director of South Yorkshire-based Gilburn Investment Group, and is perfectly placed to help you find that perfect property and come up with a plan to help you build a steady income. “I see myself as a matchmaker,” she said. “I find the ideal properties for people looking to invest, that can be anything from a flat to a whole block of flats, from a two-bed terraced to a whole portfolio of two-bed terraces. “I help investors build a portfolio with a good monthly cash flow without the

offer a hassle-free service, as Rochelle explains: “I can bring you the right property deals that will give you the required cashflow to help reach your goals. I manage the process from start to finish so that you can sit back and relax. I’ll find the properties, project manage any renovation and put you in touch with the best solicitors, mortgage advisors and letting agents.” And is there a good time to invest? “The answer to that question is always now – there’s no time like the present. There are always a million reasons to wait before you do something, but while you’re waiting, that money in the bank earning 0.01% could be generating you an income.” Gilburn Investment Group Tel: 0114 438 1272 Email: info@gilburninvestmentgroup.com gilburninvestmentgroup.com

TRAVEL
River deep, mountain high SLOPE OFF SOMEWHERE SPECIAL THIS WINTER. RICHARD ABBEY LOOKS AT UK BREAKS FOR EVERY KIND OF TRAVELLER. t this time of year, when the skies are grey and the temperatures are low, nothing lifts the spirits more than having a holiday to look forward to. And with half-term coming up in February, now is the perfect time to plan a family getaway. When it comes to winter holidays, we tend to fall into two camps – those who embrace the beautiful yet chilly outdoors, and those who wish to escape to much sunnier climes. Given that the latter choice is probably not an option (for now), we’ve rounded up some great British breaks, from cabin comfort to Scottish skiing.
A
Skiing in Scotland With many European resorts facing temporary closure in the early parts of 2021, and travel curtailed, Scotland could be in for a bumper winter ski season - if restrictions allow. Thinking positively, if skiing north of the border is open, there are some great resorts to consider. Cairngorm Mountain is open year-round but in winter really comes into its own with a ski school, ranger walks and a cafe. Glencoe mountain also has a ski centre (Scotland’s oldest) and is situated in an area of outstanding natural beauty on Rannoch Moor. Microlodges, hookups and camping on site are all available and pre-booking is advised. For the real skiers, Glenshee is the largest resort in the UK, covering an area of more than 2,000 acres extending across four mountains and three valleys and boasting 21 lifts and tows. Glenshee offers a choice of 36 runs comprising 40 kms of pisted snow. The longest single run, Glas Maol, extends to a fantastic 2 kms of skiing, while the extensive snow-making facilities means the centre is often open for longer. Island Life Uncrowded, unspoilt and currently under the lowest Covid tier restrictions in the country, the Isles of Scilly offer a winter break with a difference. Lying just off the coast of Cornwall, life moves at a much easier pace on the isles. The permanently inhabited island of Tresco is the perfect fit; from splendid isolation and unapologetic beauty, to warm, cosy retreats fit for a king – this island break has it all and more. Escape to a place where the focus is on nature, relaxation, and exploration. Improving
well-being and spending time with loved ones. Wander through stunning gardens, rejuvenate in the spa, or sit beside a log-burning fire with a hot chocolate in-hand. Ward off the winter blues with a restful week away in the Flying Boat and Sea Garden Cottages. The enveloping warmth of the log burner and coastal interiors will prove the perfect tonic. The waterfront location and picture windows mean you’ll live amongst island seas and skies without needing to leave the lounge. Visit www.visitislesofscilly.com for more information.

Welsh wonder
Open spaces
Wales is known for its rugged coastline, mountainous national parks and Celtic culture. It has three national parks: Snowdonia, Brecon Beacons and Pembrokeshire Coast. Snowdon is the highest mountain in the UK outside of Scotland and attracts thousands of visitors every year. Wales is a place of natural drama and things to do, from the country’s beautiful beaches such as Tenby, to walking the stunning mountain ranges of Snowdon. Its capital city, Cardiff, is a refined coastal city with a nightlife scene and a medieval castle with ornate Gothic Revival interiors. See www.visitwales.com for more.
Stretching from the Scottish Borders to Hadrian’s Wall, Northumberland is home to two Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and a national park. The region is renowned for its undeveloped landscape of high moorland, which is now largely protected as the Northumberland National Park. Northumberland remains largely rural and is the leastdensely populated county in England. In recent years the region has had considerable growth in tourism.Visitors are attracted to its scenic beauty, expansive beaches and historical sites. A boat trip to the Farne Islands to see the wildlife or the historic eighth century Lindisfarne Gospels on Holy Island is a must for holidaymakers.
Bed, breakfast and bracing coastal walks If you don’t want to venture too far, the Bike & Boot hotel in Scarborough is now taking bookings from 1 February 2021 onwards. The South Bay hotel has 65 uniquely-designed rooms, a hybrid bar-restaurant-cafe and on-site facilities for dogs, walkers, bikers and surfers. From Peasholm Park to the beautiful beach, from a cliff top walk to a meander along the nearby moors, there is plenty to do. However, if you can’t be bothered to move, you can always just sit and watch the waves crash from the comfort of your sea view room. Scarborough is also a great base to explore nearby Filey, Whitby and the North York Moors. Visit www.bikeandboot.com to find out more.

WINE
Dry January SUPERMARKET WINES: DISCOVERING OUTSTANDING YET AFFORDABLE WINE. BY JAMIE GREEN. ry January is the UK’s one-month booze-free challenge that is often undertaken for the benefit of an individual, or even to create a new habit. Taking part in Dry January is a chance to ditch the hangover, lose weight, boost your energy and save money. More importantly, it’s a way to start the year right and drink more healthily year-round. Until recently non-alcohol options consisted of replacing the alcoholic drink with a sugary soft drink that was still no good for you. The option of a quality substitute was hard to come by, especially if you wanted a like-for-like substitute to wine. Searching for these wines can be difficult. This is because there are currently four terms that are generally used for winebased drinks of 1.2% ABV and under. These are: • ‘Low alcohol’ (1.2% or less)
D
• ‘Non-alcoholic’ (a term that cannot be used by a brand associated with alcohol) • ‘De-alcoholised’ (alcohol extracted, no more than 0.5% abv) • ‘Alcohol free’ (alcohol extracted, no more than 0.05% abv) The calories for each of the wines featured is, on average, three times lower than those of a similar style with alcohol. They serve as a great alternative for getting over the hump on a Wednesday or that cheeky glass or two on Thursday because you’re over the week and ready for the weekend. See @supermarketwines for more non- and low- alcoholic wines and wine-based cocktail recipes. For more information or to donate please go to alcoholchange.ork.uk

What will you be driving in 2021? HERE ARE SOME MODELS TO LOOK OUT FOR OVER THE COMING MONTHS. This intelligently networked system enables a new dimension of driving dynamics. The new Golf R now reigns supreme as the product line’s most powerful model to date. The fifth edition of the sports car accelerates to 100 km/h in just 4.7 seconds. The top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h. However, the Golf R can also be ordered with an optional R-Performance package, which enables the top speed to be increased to 270 km/h.
SALOON ŠKODA‘s best-selling Octavia has been given an upgrade, with the vRS the pick of the bunch. ŠKODA’s line-up of the Octavia vRS now consists of a sporty trio. The Land Rover Discovery is a staple to everyday British middle-class living. As an all-rounder, there’s very little that can beat the Discovery in terms of luxury, practicality, image and everyday usage. With this new Discovery, Land Rover has slightly tweaked the exterior with a revised front bumper and new signature LED headlights and daytime running lights. Inside the technology available has been upgraded such as providing a larger 11.4-inch, full HD touchscreen and improving cabin air-filtration quality through scanning air in real time. ELECTRIC
HYBRID
BMW’s vision to create an electric version of its X-series cars is set to become a reality as they launch the iX at the end of 2021. Conceived from the outset for purely electric mobility, the iX sees BMW redefining the successful Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) concept. With its completely newly developed, precise and minimalist design, the BMW iX is the first representative of a trailblazing generation of cars poised to redefine the driving experience, the feeling of interior space and the relationship between a vehicle and those on board. The new charging technology of the BMW iX enables DC fast charging at up to 200 kW. This means the battery can be charged from 10 to 80 per cent of its full capacity in under 40 minutes.
Perhaps not what you were expecting...The SF-90 Spider is Ferrari’s first ever plug-in hybrid convertible vehicle. However, just because it’s a plug-in-hybrid doesn’t make it a Toyota Prius with the roof chopped off. Oh no! In fact, the SF-90 spider develops 769hp from its 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8, and the trio of electric motors produces an extra 217hp. Performance stats are a 2.5 second 0-62mph time, 0124mph in 7.0 seconds (0.3 seconds slower than the coupe), and a 211-mph top speed – not bad for a car that can travel up to 16 miles on electricity alone at a speed of up to 84mph. Styling changes over the coupe include a 20mm lower roofline, vents in the rear screen to improve cooling and thinner A-pillars. www.rmcmedia.co.uk 55

The Long Gallery
A DIGITAL PLAN TO BRING THE MANSION’S CHARACTERS BACK TO LIFE. magine walking through the corridors of Wentworth Woodhouse, and hearing the whispers of the backstairs maids, or catching a fleeting glimpse of characters from centuries-past... Soon such imaginings will become a reality - in the virtual sense - as the Grade I listed mansion develops an immersive visitor experience bringing history to life. A pilot project,Wentworth Reimagined, could be drawing greater numbers of family visitors to the house by next summer, and is being made possible thanks to a Respond and Reimagine Grant from Art Fund, the UK’s national charity for art. Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust has been awarded £40,000 from the charity’s pot designed to help museums, galleries and cultural organisations hit by the Covid-19 pandemic adapt and reimagine new ways of future working. “We are incredibly grateful to Art Fund for this generous sum. life and appeal directly to family visitors,” said WWPT’s visitor operations manager Jen Booth. “We will be inviting visitors to step back in time. As they walk through the mansion they will be immersed in a fun and fascinating experience and hear the hustle and bustle of below stairs, statues gossiping and even fireplaces singing.” Wentworth Reimagined will use the latest technology to tell some of the
Rotherham historian Melvyn Jones
untold tales from the house’s rich and varied history. A series of short, story–led films will be projected along the visitor journey and seasonal character-led activity days will be created. It may/will be developed into an online experience for people wanting to learn about the house during temporary closures brought about by the pandemic. The grant will be spent on audio and visual equipment to bring the stories to life. Local community artists Becky Newbould and Gemma Weelan, of WE Great Ladies, have been commissioned to research, write and direct the films and audio recordings. The women are working alongside the Trust’s Volunteer Research Team to identify fascinating stories of people who lived above and below stairs over the centuries. The team is led by research volunteer co-ordinator Helen Jones and house archivist David Allott and features wellknown Rotherham historians Melvin and Joan Jones.

BEER
New year, new beer VISIONARY BREWMASTER RETURN WITH A SIMPLE MESSAGE – KEEP SUPPING LOCAL! It’s great to be back for our second column in the Sixer magazine, we hope all enjoyed our December picks and we helped our local breweries throughout these difficult times, with readers opting to shop and “sup local”! Our hopes for 2021, like many others, are that life can go back to the norm and we can all get back to enjoying local beers and produce together in Sheffield pubs and bars. This, however, may not be the case and restrictions are likely to continuing in regards to the COVID-19 pandemic so it may still be some time before we can sit round a table with others and enjoy a beer or two/ three. But this doesn’t mean we can’t continue to order and take advantage of the great brews we have on our doorsteps. Be proud and keep supporting smaller local breweries and businesses as they will of course still need us in 2021. Get to know the people behind the beer, what they stand for and the history of the brewery they come from, where the journey started and the future aspirations. The new year is usually where individuals and groups opt to do something different and outline their new year resolutions to better theirselves, from losing weight to saving money. As we’ve all had a challenging and stressful 2020 why not look to do something different for 2021 that’s not a chore and instead a treat! Try a new beer you may have shied away from in the past; something stronger or with a crisp taste that’s slightly weaker, a dark beer, porter, or something with fruit and spice. We’re not saying you have to change your preference completely but instead experience beverages differently, sampling new and exciting drinks and tasting the different hops and notes throughout.

Visionary Brewmaster’s picks for January: LOXLEY BREWERY, BLACK DOG Loxley Brewery has been part of the community since 2018 and has become very popular with the locals. This all started back in 2017 when the famous Wisewood Inn was refurbed. Loxley Brewery then turned the old garage space underneath the pub into a fully equipped, modern brewery capable of brewing traditional cask beers and bottle conditioned ales. Within the near future expanding to produce clean crisp lagers, and contemporary craft beers. Loxley Brewery have the facilities of their own fresh spring water to create their beverages. The local spring proves the love and passion this brewery put into every drink made. Milk Stout is something new Loxley are working on. The artwork on the bottle is dedicated to the brewery’s much-loved Labrador Charlie, hence the name on the bottle Black Dog. Black Dog is a lovely milk stout, with balanced flavours and just the right amount of lactose to leave a refreshing and satisfying taste. Find out more about what Loxley Brewery have to offer at www.loxleybrewery.co.uk
