There’s more... LOXLEY KITCHENS NOW SUPPLY AND INSTALL BATHROOMS TOO. oxley Kitchens has undergone some major changes over the last few months, now adding the supply and installation of bathrooms to its services. Rachel Nowak joined the team in September, bringing with her 25 years’ experience in the industry – as well as an enviable list of suppliers and fitters. She joins Neall Calvert, owner of Loxley Kitchens, who himself has over 30 years’ experience in the trade. Loxley Kitchens & Bathrooms, to give it its full title, is based on Loxley Road at Malin Bridge. The showroom, which they have occupied since 2019, is currently undergoing a major refurbishment, along with a new sign and frontage, which when complete, will have eight kitchen settings as well as seven bathroom settings. On the kitchen side, they have their own

brand of kitchens as well as those from leading brand Kesseler, complemented NEFF and Siemens appliances. For bathrooms, they are an exclusive Sheffield stockist of Vanity Hall furniture together with HIB’s range of illuminated cabinets plus Vitra and White Space sanitaryware. Whether you’re in the market for a kitchen or bathroom, Neall and Rachel offer home surveys and can supply you with a 3D design of your proposed project. Loxleys provide a complete service, including a full project management service, to ensure smooth transition during your installation. Their website – bathrooms@loxleykitchensandbathrooms.co.uk and kitchens@loxleykitchensandbathrooms.co.uk – features an extensive gallery of their completed projects as well as lots of testimonials from satisfied customers. Give them a call or pop into their showroom to find out more. They open Tuesday to Friday 10am-4pm and Saturday 10am-12.30pm. RETROSPECTIVE

Looking back 2021 - EVENTUALLY - SAW A RETURN TO SOME SORT OF NORMALITY AND GAVE US PLENTY OF OPPORTUNITY TO MEET SOME INTERESTING PEOPLE AND HEAR SOME INCREDIBLE STORIES. HERE WE LOOK BACK AT SOME OF THE HIGHLIGHTS .

January We started the new year with the best of intentions, looking at simple changes you can make at home to make a big difference. Whether that meant improving your mental wellbeing, eating and sleeping better or giving something up, we were here to help. Whatever it is that prompts you to make that promise to yourself, it’s likely because you desire one of the most fundamental and basic human emotions – to be happier. Your thoughts, actions and perceptions are what dictate how happy you feel, which in turn means that we are responsible for our own happiness.Take this responsibility seriously and you can easily start to do things that naturally boost your mood.To help you to get started, here are some simple things you can do to up your mood and beat the New Year blues.

February The joys of getting married were really put to the test as the Covid pandemic lead to ceremonies being cancelled, postponed or greatly reduced in size. With a little help from Lucy Plummer at the Vine Hotels Group, we looked at some of the predicted trends for the year, which ranged from micro weddings to sustainability, the latter of which has really come to the fore. Efforts to make weddings sustainable are great ideas for all couples to adopt: arrange a tree planting party for your guests to reduce their carbon footprint; keep food miles down by opting for locally grown meat and vegetables or a vegan menu; serve local beers, wines and spirits; and choose a venue with a beautiful backdrop that doesn’t require lavish decoration that will end up in landfill. 34 www.rmcmedia.co.uk

March In March, we spoke to Thomas Tietzsch-Tyler, who has made a name for himself as a craftsman, creating beautifully-made, one of a kind guitars. All of Thom’s electric guitars are handmade to order in his workshop at the Portland Works complex, a restored 19thcentury building now housing workspace for small artisan businesses. The business was a logical progression for Thom, who admits he was obsessed with guitars from the age of 12, (he’s now ‘approaching’ 40) and has spent much of the time since then playing in bands in and around Sheffield. If you’re lucky enough to own one of his guitars, it’s likely their rarity value will exceed the £1,500 to £3,000 asking price for a bespoke instrument that is tailor-made to your desired specification. Every component is made by hand.

April Andrew Vickers is the mastermind behind a business called Stoneface. His is a remarkable success story which has seen ordinary stone transformed into works of art. And in doing so, he has built an international enterprise. Customers from all over the world now beat a path to his door in Storrs Wood, a green enclave amid the trees in Loxley Valley, on the fringes of Sheffield. Having discovered he had a natural talent for sculpture, it was a logical leap to start on more ambitious pieces. Ornate candle holders, stone hearts and statuary were in high demand. An unexpected challenge arose when he took to a creative way of showing his appreciation to the NHS during the Covid pandemic. Messages of support began to appear on boulders, providing a unique way of commemorating the events of that year in a permanent form.

May It’s become the trusted source for accurate local weather. Come rain or shine, thousands of Sheffielders are choosing Steel City Skies over the likes of the BBC, Met Office and local media for their forecasts. But who is the man behind the hugely popular weather forecasting page? That man is Stephen Vincent and he’s not a meteorologist but a teaching assistant at a primary school in the north of the city and also recently qualified as a Forest School practitioner.Weather is his hobby, his passion and Steel City Skies is a service he is happy to continue to provide. You’ll find him on Facebook,Twitter and YouTube delivering daily and weekly forecasts for Sheffield which are, more often than not, right on the money. Stephen, who also lives in north Sheffield, has been running the page for three years after friends and colleagues at work often asked him what the weather was going to be like for the weekend or the holidays. The rest, they say, is history. www.rmcmedia.co.uk 35

June There’s something cosy and comforting about those charming tins of boiled fruit sweets that have played an essential part in so many of our adventures, from family day trips to the coast to long-haul flights to the other side of the world. But when Leslie Simpkin returned to his Sheffield home from the First World War with the germ of an idea to produce and sell glucose sweets, he immediately hit upon a recipe for success that has seen his family business thrive over the last 100 years. Simpkins Travel Sweets were first produced in 1921 and are still in demand all over the world, with loyal customers in 40 countries as far afield as Colombia, Japan, Australia, the USA and Malaysia. From its base in Hillsborough, Simpkins has remained strictly under family control and now a third generation is steering the ship with Adrian Simpkin and his sister Karen, grandchildren of Leslie, at the helm as joint managing directors.

July Fox Valley celebrated its fifth birthday in the summer and though it’s been a difficult year for the retail environment there was plenty to look forward to at the north Sheffield centre – with a return of a diary of seasonal events and new stores opening. Fox Valley launched on 16 June 2016 and was officially opened by Joanna Lumley OBE. Hundreds of local people turned out to be the first shoppers through the doors of the national and independent retailers now on their doorsteps including Aldi, Pontis Italian Kitchen, Sorelle Jewellery and Regatta to name a few. Phase two of Fox Valley’s launch came in September the same year and saw JoJo Maman Bébé and the independent Sandersons Department Store join the retail line up. Sandersons has since built on the store’s success and brought an eclectic range of new luxury, unique and much-loved brands to the area including Holland Cooper, Tommy Hilfiger, Hobbs, Part Two and Barbour. Since opening five year’s ago, the team at Fox Valley have been proud to host many exciting events for the local community to enjoy including the annual Christmas lights switch-on, Halloween events, the Food and Music Festival and a packed diary of live weekend entertainment.

September Back in 1932 three friends came together to start a business in Sheffield manufacturing selling razor blades. They had their own distinct ideology regarding how a company should be run that seemed downright revolutionary. Nearly 90 years on it still raises eyebrows. Walter Swann had left a secure position with another razor blade company to be his own boss. He brought with him Doris Fairweather, a supervisor with a strict work ethic who brought her team of female workers with her and they were joined by Alfred Morton, a metallurgist. They wanted to create a kind of Workers’ Utopia, with pay and conditions way better than what was considered standard fair practice at the time. However, this dream was built to last. Swann-Morton was to become one of Sheffield’s most spectacular success stories and its headquarters on Owlerton Green remains a familiar landmark in the city. 36 www.rmcmedia.co.uk

August Travel west for around a mile and a half from Sheffield city centre and you will find the neighbouring suburbs Crookes and Walkley situated on a large hill which gives breathtaking views of Sheffield. The popular suburbs border Broomhill and Crookesmoor to the south and east, and stunning countryside to the north with the Peak District being located nearby. Both suburbs were recently listed in White and Company’s best places to live in Sheffield. Crookes is known for being one of the most social and convenient student locations in the city with it being located around a 15-minute walk away from the university campus giving the area diversity and a real buzz. Walkley on the other hand is more popular amongst professionals and families due its convenient location, great views of the city and countryside to the north and all of the fantastic amenities that the suburb has to offer. We decided to take a closer look.

October Located north-west of Sheffield city centre on Club Mill Road, in Hillsborough sits the littleknown Wardsend Cemetery, a stunning,Victorian stretch of land that sits along part of the River Don behind the popular Owlerton Stadium and Bassett’s sweet factory. The cemetery is situated in a secluded, riverside, woodland area with stunning greenery all around which is well looked after by a group of volunteers known as the Friends of Wardsend. Many Sheffielders enjoy walking around the area for a peaceful and idyllic walk, reminiscing or learning about the incredible amount of history that the place has to offer. The cemetery dates back to 1857 when it first opened to the public on 21 June.

November ‘Twas the month before Christmas and eager shoppers fill the snow-trodden streets, peering through the warm windows of independent shops selling a range of gifts and treats, all against a backdrop of fairy lights and festive cheer. But this is not some quaint Gingerbread German town or Alpine resort, this is Hillsborough. Or at least it could be. The snow might be a stretch too far but, thanks to a group of local like-minded business people, is hoped that the streets of this north Sheffield suburb will be buzzing once again in the run up to Christmas. Uniting to form ‘Hillsborough Together’, the group has received £200,000 from Sheffield City Council to regenerate and reinvigorate the Hillsborough area - their first move will be to bring Christmas lights back to the area for the first time in over a decade. It’s a small step but one that will bring a touch of cheer to Hillsborough, encouraging residents to shop local and support the businesses on their doorstep.

December Nothing gets us into the yuletide spirit like a Christmas market adventure. With handmade gifts galore, deliciously spiced aromas in the air and elaborate tree decorations aplenty, this is the occasion to soak up the magical merriment and local traditions. Fortunately for us, some of the world’s best Christmas markets are only a short hop (or two) away. From the cobbled streets of Sheffield to Hyde Park Winter Wonderland, we selected the most enchanting Christmas market destinations to visit in December.

Bradfield Dungworth PFA Christmas Tractor Rally

Work well under way

On Sunday 12 December a magical event took place. A real sense of community spirit was felt as 45 decorated tractors followed a route from Bradfield Dungworth Primary School through Dungworth Village, on to Stannington,Worrall, High Bradfield, round Dam Flask and finished at The Plough Inn at Low Bradfield. There was huge support from the participants who made wonderful efforts to decorate their tractors with bright lights, tinsel, trees and all things Christmas! The appreciation for all their hard work was shown by the cheering spectators who gathered along the route to watch the fantastic procession. The PFA organised the event to raise money for Bradfield Dungworth Primary School. Due to the on-going pandemic, lots of fundraising events that would normally be held have been unable to go ahead. This opportunity to involve the local community and help get everyone feeling festive was welcome. The event has raised almost £1000. This money will go towards updating IT equipment and tablets for the children to use in lessons. If you would like to contribute to the PFA’s fundraising efforts then please use this link and donate! https://gofund.me/95f66859

Work is now well under way on one of the most important phases of the Sky-House Co Oughtibridge Mill development. The Oughtibridge Mill development features 35 Sky-House properties. But unique to the site, which sits as part of a major new development by David Wilson, is the conversion of existing cottages into five further properties in the picturesque Don Valley setting. And the original mill buildings are being transformed into a mixed use food hall, community hub and leisure facility, with facilities for start up businesses too. “The interest in this site has been enormous with more than 40 per cent now sold and we look forward to the former mill bringing a new dining experience to the north of Sheffield, serving what is set to become one of the city’s most ambitious residential developments,” said Sky-House Co cofounder David Cross. “It will be a fantastic community, family and social space that will be of benefit not only to the people on this site but also for the north of Sheffield as a whole.” The Sky-House version of the Victorian back-to-back house was created by the award-winning architects at Sheffield’s CODA Studios and is already well established at the Waverley redevelopment site between Sheffield and Rotherham, where a second phase of 44 homes is now under construction. Have you made any resolutions for this year? MAKING POSITIVE CHANGES CAN BE GOOD FOR YOUR EYES TOO, SAYS MARTYN KEMP OPTICIANS. ost often, New Year’s resolutions are about creating new routines, eating healthier and exercising more, but did you know both of these help to keep your eyes healthy too? Fruit and vegetables are an important part of a healthy diet and your eyes. Kale is often labelled a superfood because it contains many important vitamins and nutrients, and it extremely good for your eye health. Kale contains antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin which may help prevent eye conditions such as agerelated macular degeneration and cataracts. There are other fruits, vegetables, nuts, and fish that many of us already eat that can promote eye health. Exercise is also recommended as part

M

of a healthy lifestyle and is extremely beneficial for your eye health. Aerobic exercise can help increase your oxygen supply to the optic nerve and lower any pressure that builds up in the eyes helping to reduce the risk of developing eye conditions such as glaucoma. While you can look after your eye health in many ways at home, it is important to remember to attend regular eye examinations as they are vital for assessing the health of your eyes, diagnosing, and monitoring eye conditions and updating your prescription.

If you have noticed a change in your vision or would like to talk to a member of the team about updating your glasses, contact Martyn Kemp Opticians, Stocksbridge on 0114 288 2287 or visit www.mko.co.uk.

Celebrating 35 years in business New Image celebrated the milestone in style. n Wednesday 8 December, customers and friends joined New Image in celebrating this milestone anniversary in store. The ladies boutique, owned by Lesley Taylor, issued Golden Tickets throughout the month and also held a quiz for their guests - the winner received a £100 voucher whilst the two runners-up received £25 vouchers. “Back when my dear mother Jean and myself started out, mobile phones where the size of a house brick, there was no online shopping, no social media, mail order catalogues were the only people sending out clothing parcels and cash was definitely normal tender,” said Lesley. “Times have changed and so have New Image – we have seen lots of changes, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic! “I really want to thank our loyal customers for supporting us over the last 35 years, we certainly wouldn’t be still standing today if customers hadn’t supported and valued our service and quality. “I’d also like to say a huge personal thank you to our current members of staff – Beverly Dearn, Alyson Leyland, Amanda Glaves and our recent new member Emma Oxley. Thank you to our talented seamstresses who ensure every item purchased is a perfect fit. “The New Image team totally embrace the ethos, giving time and attention to our customers and delivering wonderful personal service and also great loyalty to myself. I also acknowledge various staff members who have, over the last 35 years, contributed to the success and progress of the New Image story.” New Image first opened in 1986 at 289 Middlewood Road, Hillsborough before relocating to their current premises at 277 Middlewood Road in 1989. “The New Image team totally embrace the ethos, giving time and attention to our customers and delivering wonderful personal service and also great loyalty.” – Lesley Taylor, owner by Lesley’s husband and his hardworking team, they started trading in September of that year on the ground floor, showcasing their collections, including individual casual wear. “It was fantastic,” recalls Lesley. A rather lengthy refurbishment of the whole building followed in 2007 to create an upper sales floor, which allowed the business to further evolve. This beautiful space houses outfits perfect for mothers of the bride and groom, guest wear, hats, fascinators, shoes and bags, dressing you from head to toe. This change put New Image firmly on the map. “New Image has evolved,” concludes Lesley. “ We have survived lots of changes, including Covid, and are now ready to face retailing in 2022.”

The importance of buying from trusted sources PA JEWELLERY DISCUSS THE ETHICS OF LAB-GROWN DIAMONDS. ab-grown diamonds are often promoted as a more ethical product than natural. There is no doubt that diamonds have a less than brilliant history; terms like ‘conflict diamonds’ became common in association with the civil war in Sierra Leone in the 1990s where diamonds were used to fund conflict: as much as fiver per cent of diamonds by value entered the market illegally. Although the industry was initially slow to respond, the Kimberley Process was created in the early 2000s: a system with certification at source and checks as diamonds cross borders. This has been largely successful in keeping illegitimate diamonds from the market – now approximately 0.1-0.5 per cent by value. Efforts to provide traceability of stones from the mine through to the final consumer are advancing, although this is still not possible for the vast majority of diamonds. For us, buying from trusted sources increases confidence that the diamonds are traded legitimately. Most of the larger diamonds we purchase are from companies that are sight holders with some of the largest diamond producers, buying directly from the mines, reducing opportunity for the infiltration of illegitimate stones. The diamond industry directly supports around ten million jobs worldwide. While many of these, in jewellery manufacture and retail, would be maintained if customers switched to lab grown stones, many livelihoods relying on mining and sorting natural stones would be lost. These jobs are often in poorer regions where alternative work is limited, and diamond production makes a significant contribution to the

economy. Botswana is an example of the difference the industry can make, accounting for approximately 40 per cent of the country’s GDP, paying for their much-admired education, healthcare, and public transport systems. Focus on the diamond industry means it is encouraged to keep ahead in terms of health and safety, pay and conditions. Mining can be dirty and dangerous, but diamond mining is amongst the best-regulated. Lab grown diamonds are not associated with concerns about conflict. They are produced in purpose-built facilities with modern health and safety requirements. As with the ecological impact, any associations with poor treatment or methods are more removed, related to the recovery of the necessary raw materials. The freedom of lab grown stones from association with conflict is often highlighted as a big advantage, but many arguments against natural diamonds are based on outdated assumptions. Where properly managed natural diamonds can make an important contribution to the societies in which they are mined. If you have concerns about the ethics of the jewellery you are buying, please ask for more information. We try to work with suppliers who meet our own expectations and we have options for wedding or engagement rings to be made with Fair Trade gold alongside natural or lab grown diamonds. Sheffield’s Tour De Bradfield Tackling the same hills as when the Tour De France came in 2014, this route is Sheffield’s own. Starting at Forge Valley Community Centre, head to Malin Bridge before starting the gentle climb up to Dam Flask reservoir. Here you can follow the water’s edge in the heart of Sheffield’s Lakeland and then head to Agden reservoir where you can sit and enjoy the water’s beauty. Next, following the Tour De France route up Mortimer Road, a climb is rewarded by more spectacular views. Passing through High Bradfield and resting your legs on the decent back. Freewheeling until Hill Top, providing more breath-taking views to bask in, before enjoying the downhill ride back to Forge Valley Community Centre.

Lady Canning’s Head out of Sheffield on Ringinglow Road and you’ll arrive at Lady Canning’s on the edge of Houndkirk Moor. A crowdfunding initiative saw the creation of two mountain bike trails – Blue Steel and Cooking on Gas. The aim with Lady Cannings is to offer fun trails for children, beginners and intermediate riders to enjoy and improve their skills before building up to the more technical trails in the Peak District. Blue Steel is 1.4km in length and is packed full of fun but there are no jumps or features that will put off the novice, with the trail twisting and turning through berms and rollers from top to bottom. The surface is generally smooth. Cooking on Gas is slightly longer at 1.6km and incorporates less in the way of features and is more of a flow trail with loads of opportunity to pump for speed over rollers and out of the massive berms. There’s nothing that a beginner can’t handle.

MOTORING

A car with a conscience Fiat has announced a partnership with (RED) by unveiling New (500)RED, the first (RED) car in a series of special editions created to help the charity fight against global pandemics. U2’s Bono, co-founder, (RED), stated: “This partnership is a powerful shot in the arm for (RED)’s fight against pandemics and the complacency that fuels them. It’s hard to believe that 15 years on from (RED)’s founding we are now fighting another virus, but it’s even harder to see the virus of injustice that marked the AIDS pandemic is alive and well during COVID.” The New all-electric (500)RED was created in collaboration between Fiat and (RED) with a shared message to care for the planet and for its people. The special series is now available across the entire 500 family: the New (500)RED, (500)RED and (500X)RED will adopt the colour red as a hallmark externally on the bodywork, logos, mirror caps and design cues on the alloy wheels.

The New MG ZS EV builds on the success of the existing model, which is the brand’s best-selling pure electric model and a consistent fixture among the UK’s top 10 best-selling electric vehicles. The revised model makes the MG ZS EV even better and is characterised by a modernised design, improved performance, a significantly longer range, and even more technology. It introduces a fresh 72kWh battery pack delivering a substantial range increase, as well as a new iSMART connectivity system, which brings state-of-the-art infotainment to the latest model. MG is introducing two new version names, starting with the new ZS EV – SE and Trophy. The 72 kWh Long Range battery will offer a range of 273 miles compared with 163 miles for the existing model (based on WLTP measurements).

Designed from the ground up as Renault’s first purpose-built hybrid car, the All-New Arkana offers an entirely electrified range of powertrains, with the advanced E-Tech hybrid and TCe 140 mild-hybrid complementing Renault’s wider electrification strategy. The E-Tech hybrid powertrain combines a 1.6-litre petrol engine with a 1.2 kWh lithium-ion battery and two electric motors, which combined, produces 145hp, 148Nm of torque from the 1.6-litre petrol engine and 250Nm of torque from the electric motors. This version of the Arkana will go from 062mph in 10.8 seconds. The All-New Renault Arkana makes a bold statement as the Renault brand’s first-ever SUV with sleek coupé-inspired styling, yet it slots perfectly into Renault’s range of eye-catching SUVs alongside the Captur and Kadjar.

The latest generation Polo GTI is now available to order priced from £26,430 RRP on-the-road. Thanks to a raft of enhancements,Volkswagen’s superminisized GTI, more than ever before, exudes all of the qualities that have made those three iconic letters so successful over the course of nearly 50 years. At the heart of every GTI is its engine, and that is true of the new range-topping Polo. Its 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged TSI petrol power plant produces a peak power figure of 207 PS. Allied to a super-responsive sevenspeed dual clutch gearbox (DSG), the new Polo GTI is capable of sprinting from standstill to 62 mph in 6.5 seconds, before attaining a top speed of 149mph. The new Polo GTI is fitted as standard with Volkswagen’s innovative IQ.LIGHT LED matrix headlights, bringing big-car tech to the small-car sector.
