Worrall Festival & Gala returns on 30 June and 1 July with an impressive lineup featuring some of Sheffield’s best upand-coming bands, alongside well-known local favourites. Just on the edge of Sheffield in the picturesque village of Worrall, the festival and gala provides weekend entertainment for all ages. Headlining Friday night is energetic folk band, Isembard’s Wheel and the talented Mark and Catherine Pugh (members of local folk band, Jack’s Rake), Richard Brown and Alice Bryan. Saturday’s activities begin at 1pm with a gala featuring children’s activities, stalls, craft activities, music workshops, Our Cow Molly ice-cream and much more. The evening festival follows on at 4pm with performances from Cocklebread (a volunteer collective of musicians), Humble Williams, Kid Conventional, indie/hip-hop four-piece Spit n Strings, Celtic folk-rock band Treebeard and Saturday headline act, The 20ft Squid Blues Band, who are sure to get everyone dancing. Budding musicians also have the opportunity to showcase their talent during the open-mic session from 6pm. All abilities welcome. A real ale bar will be open throughout the weekend featuring a selection of locally-brewed ales and ciders. Wharncliffe Side Primary are runners up in a national competition to find the best peer mediation schemes in the country. For more than ten years, the school has trained young volunteers who then help other pupils to sort out arguments and friendship matters. Their efforts were recently recognised when they were presented with a certificate at the school. The scheme began in 2005, when Wharncliffe Side worked with CRESST, a Sheffield charity that teaches children and young people conflict resolution skills. Every year since, the school has run workshops for their children and invited a team of volunteers to train as peer mediators. These young peacemakers then organise a rota to help younger children to find ways out of their disputes. Ellis Brooks from Quakers in Britain, who introduced the award, said: “We were really impressed by the school’s commitment. Reading the nomination, we knew it was a true whole school approach to conflict resolution because teachers, parents, and crucially, children all talked about the difference it makes. What is particularly impressive about Wharncliffe Side is that they’ve stayed focused for more than a decade. That means hundreds of people in Sheffield growing up with mediation skills and experience.” The Lighting the Fire national peer mediation award was launched this year by LEAP Confronting Conflict, a prestigious London youth organisation that celebrates community projects to support young people dealing with conflicts.
Local author launches Parkwood Springs book A new book about Parkwood Springs has been launched this month. The Lost Village of Parkwood Springs by Barbara Warsop, takes a look at the history of an area that was lost during the slum clearances. With stories from the residents that lived there between the 1920s and 1970s, the book is an oral history of a friendly community. Barbara said: “I was born on Parkwood Springs in 1938, all my family lived there. It was a lovely place to live with a wonderful community spirit. Slimmers donate clothes to Cancer Research UK Kind-hearted slimmers in Sheffield are clearing out their wardrobes and donating clothes they’ve successfully slimmed out of to help Cancer Research UK raise £3million. The Big Slimming World Clothes Throw is a two-week long event that runs in Slimming World groups across the UK from 5-18 June. Members confident enough to know they’ll never need their before clothes again are being invited to donate clothes, shoes, bags and accessories to local Cancer Research UK shops by taking them along to their weekly group. Last year, The Big Slimming World Clothes Throw raised £2.1million, and this year, the total is set to be even bigger. New for 2017, group members who find one of the 4,000 specially-branded golden bags to donate their clothes in will be entered into a prize draw, giving them a chance to meet a mysterious celebrity who is a big supporter of Cancer Research UK, or win shopping vouchers to replace the clothes they’ve kindly donated. Local weight loss consultant and team developer, Emma Allott said: “Lots of people don’t know that keeping a healthy weight helps reduce the risk of developing some types of cancer. The three-mile race around the village of Grenoside is a popular tradition which dates back to the 1870s and is now one of the most popular fixtures in the community’s calendar. The event is organised by the Hughes family of Grenoside and this year, they will be raising money for Sheffield’s only hospice in memory of friend and St Luke’s patient, Kate Dunn. The 14 July race will feature a children’s race at 5pm and a main adult event at 7pm. Entry is £5 for children and £10 for adults. The closing date is 18 June. Bradfield’s farewell to the man who lived for cricket THERE WAS SADNESS IN BRADFIELD FOLLOWING THE DEATH OF LONG-STANDING RESIDENT BERNARD WRAGG AT THE AGE OF 92. HERE WE REPRODUCE CHRIS WILSON’S INTERVIEW WITH BERNARD, WHO WAS A MAINSTAY OF BRADFIELD CRICKET CLUB, FROM THE MAY, 1999 ISSUE OF SIXER. or many of us the most enduring single image of the English summer is cricket on the village green. That is certainly the case in the picturesque village of Bradfield where the cricket ground is the centrepiece of the community. And if one man sums up all that is good about this venerable institution it is Bernard Wragg, 74 not out and still going strong as president of Bradfield Cricket Club. Bernard was born in High Bradfield and never strayed far. For 15 years he moved a few miles down the road to Dungworth but now he is back in Low Bradfield, living just a brisk off-drive away from the boundary of the cricket club that has been a large part of his life. He first played for Bradfield at the age of 13 ‘because they were short of a player’ but became a regular on leaving school in 1939, carrying on playing for nearly 50 years. “I retired once at the age of 62 but came back because the second team was struggling and finished the season top of the batting averages,” he recalls.

“But I eased myself out because I didn’t want to hold the young ones back.” Bernard, a talented left-handed batsman, enjoyed every moment of his career, savouring the companionship and keen competition with local rivals. “Stannington were our nearest side and we always played some good, hard-fought matches,” he recalls. “I made a lot of friends travelling all over the region to play matches - and that was by bus or tram because none of the players had cars in those days. “If you missed the last bus from Malin Bridge at 9.30pm it meant a late night and a long walk home.” Bernard recalls his earliest days playing for Bradfield as a time of struggle. “There wasn’t much money and it was hard to get some decent kit together within the club. Then again there was no TV and not much else to do other than play football in winter and cricket in summer. “Young people have more choices now which is why it is sometimes hard to attract new players. But cricket is a wonderful summer game and I hope people will always want to play it in Bradfield.” @SixerRMC

All I know of him is by word of mouth so forgive me for having the temerity to write about someone I never met. Gala set to bring a touch of magic to the park FINGERS ARE CROSSED FOR FINE WEATHER AS OUGHTIBRIDGE GEARS UP FOR ITS BIGGEST EVENT OF THE SUMMER. here will be magic in the air in Coronation Park this month, as Oughtibridge Gala returns for another spectacular event. Taking place on Saturday 24 June, this year’s theme is magical kingdoms, so expect plenty of witches and wizards on parade and medieval knights in battle. Summer galas have been an important part of Oughtibridge’s social calendar since 1972, but the tradition is believed to go back much further to a hospital fundraiser festival that started nearly 100 years ago. Another local tradition, which has inspired this year’s theme, is the legend of The Dragon of Wantley. The story goes that a knight slayed the dragon on Wharncliffe Crags, which is why you will still find the dragon emblem on the Wharncliffe Side Primary School uniform today. Who knows, The Dragon of Wharncliffe may even be making an appearance. As usual, the gala will kick off with a parade through the village, setting off from Birkswood Drive at 12.30pm and making its way down Church Street for the official grand opening at Coronation Park at 1pm. Led by 2017 gala princess Katie, her attendants Jessica and Sienna, the Oughtibridge Brass Band, the local Rainbow and Brownie groups will follow in magical fancy dress outfits carrying handmade decorations. Once in the main arena, there will be plenty of entertainment for all the family to enjoy including knights from The Escafeld Medieval Society, local dance act Branching Out, music from local band Lost Control and the Wharncliffe Side Primary School choir. Dog show Scrufts is back for a successful third year and the judges are looking forward to welcoming plenty of new, as well as previous entrees. Scrufts will put local pets through their paces with six categories to

enter including prettiest girl, most handsome boy, best pup under one year and best veteran over ten, followed by a parade around the main arena. After having to cancel last year because of bad weather, organisers are crossing their fingers that the weather will hold up for the tug of war event. The festivals ‘have a go’ sessions will also be returning, so if you are feeling musical, come and have a blow with the Oughtibridge Brass Band. If you are feeling adventurous, climb the trees for a rope challenge and if you are feeling creative, there will be everything from candle making to floral competitions. Foodies can enjoy burgers and a hog roast, and delicious magical desserts will include fairy cakes and lemon drizzle cake. And if you

are feeling lucky, enter their raffle for a chance to win a cash prize, luxury hampers from local businesses, a £100 voucher for Graham’s Tyres and much more. Between 2,000 and 3,000 people are expected to attend this year’s gala and, as usual, all the money made on the day will be split between a number of worthy local causes. “We’ve raised almost £19,000 over the last five years for various local groups and it’s all purely from the support and generosity of people on the day,” says co-organiser Sandra Walton. “This year, much of the money will go towards helping Bradfield Parish Council improve the disabled toilet in Coronation Park. This event is all about helping our community and making it a nicer place to live.” Other local causes the event will help fund include Oughtibridge Rainbows, Brownies and Guides, Wharncliffe Side Brownies, Friends of Coronation Park, Oughtibridge Brass Band, Wharncliffe Side School Orchestra, Oughtibridge Zion Chapel, Worrall Chapel and many more. The annual Sports Night has also become a local tradition in recent years. Taking place before the gala on Wednesday 14 June, the evening will give running enthusiasts a chance to compete in The Tom Holmes Gala Chase and Hill Climb Race in association with Penistone Footpath Runners. With so much to see and do, what is Sandra most excited about this year? “I’m looking forward to a beautiful sunny day – hopefully! It’s a lovely opportunity to bump into people and see what local groups are doing. “The parades are always great and it’s lovely to see what costumes and decorations the children have come up with. All the money goes back into the community so it really is worth coming along.”

A whole new lease of life STANNINGTON’S CARNIVAL IS BACK AND PROMISES TO BE BETTER THAN EVER AFTER LAST YEAR’S RAIN-HIT EVENT PROMPTED A RETHINK.

ast year’s Stannington Carnival may have been a muddy affair, but it did nothing to dampen the spirits of the local community. Their loyalty and generosity meant that SCOFF, the organising committee, was able to donate more than £4,000 to voluntary organisations within Stannington. However, the carnival committee felt they were in a rut – both literally and metaphorically. Vehicles stuck in the mud were pulled off Lomas Field by Our Cow Molly's tractor, leaving the committee with the task and cost of repairing the two fields, as requested by Sheffield City Council's Parks Department. Meanwhile, as the format of the carnival had not changed in a number of years and it was felt that it needed an injection of new stalls and entertainment. Bearing all this in mind, Stannington Carnival will be back for

its 26th year on Saturday 8 July with a number of changes. The festival will now be held in the Pavilion Field only. There will also be no parade or theme, but the good news is that the organisers are concentrating on a much more entertaining opening ceremony. Local school children will be singing in the main arena for the official opening at 11.30am. And the even better news is that all of the regular favourite events and entertainment will be returning. After much success, the dog show will be back for a third year. If you fancy your chances, pre-register your furry friend before the start of each event for £1 per category. The categories include veterans and puppies, prettiest girl, most handsome boy and waggiest tail. The show is sponsored by Oscar Pet Foods and all profits go into the local SCOFF fund.
STANNINGTON CARNIVAL
Other old favourites include the Punch & Judy show and the bouncy castles, whilst new activity archery is sure to go down well with kids and adults alike. Could you be the next Robin Hood? Face painting and balloon modelling will be taking place all day and you will have an exciting chance to meet Elsa from Disney’s Frozen and Sponge Bob Squarepants. For animal lovers, here will be a static display of owls and a demonstration by Support Dogs. Performances in the centre arena will also include some familiar faces along with some new ones. And don't forget – there will be many of varied stalls to peruse plus plenty of eating outlets to choose from. The nearby Knowle Top Chapel will also be serving refreshments as always, as well as welcoming performances from Stannington Mixed Choir and The Old Friends Folk Group. They will be joined by the local history group and an exhibition of paintings by Rev Claudia Lupi, Rev Sally Coleman and friends entitled Visual Preaching in the Church Hall Parlour. There will be plenty of reasons to go to Stannington Carnival this summer, but festival secretary Carol Walker says there is one more thing she hopes will turn out for this year’s event – the sun. “I’m looking forward to some good weather because when the sun is shining, we get a fantastic turn out and even more donations. Join us for an event that we hope will be the best yet and help put money back into our community.” Another change will be to the beneficiary system. In the past, members of the carnival committee have nominated local voluntary organisations to receive a donation from the Carnival Fund. This year, they are asking local voluntary organisations to apply for funding. Applications will be considered by the committee and hopefully this will mean a better distribution of funds. Inspired by his father’s legacy, Stephen went on to play snooker professionally for twelve years, before becoming a UK and world qualified snooker coach and setting up The Stephen Harrison Snooker Academy in 2007. Fuelled by his passion for the sport and, in particular, for increasing access to the game, The Stephen Harrison Snooker Academy is a non-profit enterprise based in Sheffield providing snooker coaching and competitions for a wide variety of disadvantaged groups. “The focus of our work is with young

offenders, people with physical and learning disabilities or mental health problems and young people and adults not in education, employment or training,” says Stephen. “My father, Ray Harrison, was highly successful at playing this sport and also in promoting snooker to many disabled people. He was in a wheelchair, a victim of polio, but he had learned how to lift and move his body into certain positions which gave him full control of the table. “He was such an inspiration and because of him I know that snooker is not only accessible to people with physical handicaps, but it is also a terrific sport for helping people with weak, concentrative powers. “I train people who find focussing on strategy difficult, helping them learn where to

Quick, skilful movements, bordering on the dangerous at times, were exciting to watch and the satisfaction the athletes felt because of their achievements was a joy to see. “With this in mind, I’m asking for support in backing my dream and we’ll be fundraising in the local community as we work to become more sustainable and increase the services we currently offer. “We’d love to hear from you if you have any ideas or would like to get involved. I’m so grateful that my son James has been able to attend the Stephen Harrison snooker sessions over the last six/seven years. James is a young man on the autistic spectrum and as such, he has difficulties with social communication and interaction. He has a very limited range of unusually strong and narrow interests, so I was surprised and delighted when he first said he wanted to join the snooker club. Over the years, it has helped him develop his social skills by mixing with other young people and he now has another interest - we went to see the World Championships at the Crucible earlier this year and James wants to continue to play snooker as a leisure activity throughout his adult life. Playing snooker has helped James learn about persistence, focus and concentration. Keeping score helps with maths and it has significantly improved his hand-eye co-ordination. Going to snooker on Saturdays was also James’ first experience of spending time away from his family, apart from school, and he even appeared on BBC Look North last year talking about the snooker club. All in all it’s had a big impact on his independence, confidence and maturity. And, in turn, I’ve really appreciated having that time at the weekends to give me a bit of a break. The club has such a lovely atmosphere, it’s a calm environment but full of fun too. The staff are so friendly and encouraging and you feel like you’re part of a big, extended family. This is all down to Stephen. He is such an inspirational man, with a huge passion for the sport and, in particular, for increasing access to the game for people with disabilities. James has since continued to attend the club as a volunteer, helping with various jobs such as cleaning the tables, and this has also had another positive impact - James has been able to include this on his CV when applying for jobs, he can talk about snooker at interviews and Steve has kindly agreed to provide a reference for him. Very recently, James has accepted a part-time job and I firmly believe that attending the snooker sessions were a vital part of this journey. I cannot praise Stephen and the snooker club highly enough for the huge impact it has had on James’ life and on mine too. I am sure other families feel the same. Sheena Mansell
