Health and wellbeing is also at the forefront of our minds and we look at the benefits of juicing as well as some accessories that can make a positive impact. PROMOTION

Make a difference TREK SHEFFIELD FOX VALLEY – IT’S ALL ABOUT #GOBYBIKE! etting on a bike and hitting the open road or country trails has been a source of respite for many during the last year or so. Government statistics also tell us that cycling to work has increased by 300 per cent over the recent months. Cycling means less time stuck in traffic, feeling energised by the fresh air and it’s such an easy way to travel around. Cycling may not be the first choice for a daily commute, but it is much better for the environment and your wellbeing. Using your bike as a mode of transport can also have positive effects on your living costs, with a reduction in parking fees, fuel and vehicle maintenance. In the spring of 2020 Trek launched the #GoByBike campaign, encouraging people to replace journeys normally taken by car with their bike. Cycle to the shops, cycle to your friends, cycle to work. The goal is to replace car journeys with trips on the bicycle, and when you do, take a photo, Instagram it and hashtag #GoByBike, then encourage five friends to do the same. Everyone can make a difference to our collective health and the environment, one bicycle journey at a time!

G

“2020 was a very tough year for everyone but thankfully we could all still exercise outdoors,” said store manager Andy Cook. “We were busy servicing all the bikes that had been found at the back of garages, tucked behind the lawn mower and under the camping equipment! We sold more electric bicycles than ever before, advised so many new cyclists on how to be safe, to maintain their bikes and where to cycle. “Autumn 2020 saw the launch of the Sheffield Lakeland Cycle Routes, an

initiative with the Steel Valley Project that we are thrilled to be involved in. All routes can be found here: https://www.facebook.com/SheffieldLak elandCycleRoutes “We are proud to be more than just a bike shop, we want to inspire, empower and have fun along the way. With the mental benefits, the environmental benefits and of course the benefits to physical fitness, it’s time for us all to jump on our bikes.” Trek Sheffield Fox Valley are committed to getting as many people enjoying the benefits of cycling as possible, giving great advice for newcomers, and in-depth knowledge for avid cyclists. They won the Trek internal “European Store of the Year” award in 2020 – given to the Trekowned retail store that excels for their hospitality and service. The one and only THOMAS TIETZSCH-TYLER HAS MADE A NAME FOR HIMSELF AS A CRAFTSMAN, CREATING BEAUTIFULLY-MADE, ONE OF A KIND GUITARS. disused former cutlery factory in Sheffield has become a workplace fit for heroes. Guitar heroes, that is. If you’ve ever wanted to emulate the likes of Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page or Mark Knopfler, then the man you’ll need

A

14 www.rmcmedia.co.uk

to see is Thomas Tietzsch-Tyler. That’s because the alliterative owner of Tietzsch Guitars has an instrument just for you. And only you. All of Thom’s electric guitars are handmade to order in his workshop at the Portland Works complex, a restored

nineteenth-century building now housing workspace for small artisan businesses. It’s here he has made a name for himself as a craftsman, creating beautifully-made guitars to meet the exacting requirements of customers from far and wide.

015 Sixer Mar21 02/03/2021 09:25 Page 1

The business was a logical progression for Thom, who admits he was obsessed with guitars from the age of 12, (he’s now ‘approaching’ 40) and has spent much of the time since then playing in bands in and around Sheffield. If you’re lucky enough to own one of his guitars, it’s likely their rarity value will exceed the £1,500 to £3,000 asking price for a bespoke instrument that is tailor-made to your desired specification. Every component is made by hand. Above all, his products are not copies, though the cognoscenti might perhaps recognise familiar attributes and

influences of some of the legendary models prized by musicians. Among the finished articles in his workshop are examples that could at first glance be reminiscent of the Fender Telecaster or Stratocaster, but look more closely and the devil is in the detail. The solid bodies are crafted from a single piece of wood, and finished with a lacquer long since abandoned by the big makers in favour of alternatives that are better suited to mass production. “This takes days to dry and if it’s cold weather it can take even longer”, said Thom. “The difference between a factory-

made guitar and one I make here is like the difference between a production-line car and a hand-built one. It can be anything you want it to be.” Certainly, it would seem customers think so. It takes around 12 weeks to complete a guitar, and his order books are full. “I currently have six commissions in hand, which is quite enough for a oneman operation,”he says.

You can find Tietzsch Guitars on social media platforms as well at the Portland Words website: www.portlandworks.co.uk www.rmcmedia.co.uk 15

BITS & PIECES

Drive for success

New Lidl for Chapeltown?

Three tech-powered Sheffield trailblazers are searching for potential new talent via Kickstart, the government’s new work experience scheme for young jobless. City, one of the country’s most successful taxi firms, its app-fuelled delivery business City Grab and sister tech company Caboodleit are giving six unemployed young people the chance to get ‘a foot in the door’. If the lucky half-dozen show the right potential during their six-month work experience placements, permanent careers will be up for grabs. Kickstart aims to get jobless 1624-years old receiving Universal Credit on the road to jobs. “The pandemic has made it so difficult for young people to find jobs. We are giving them a chance to make their mark with us,” said Arnie Singh, the Sheffield entrepreneur behind the three brands. His businesses - which employ 60 in Sheffield - are working with The Source Skills Academy at Meadowhall to recruit Kickstart applicants. Two are needed at City Grab, Sheffield’s answer to Deliveroo, which charges lower commissions and keeps all revenue in the local economy. Caboodleit, the tech company which launched City Grab, is also taking on two recruits to learn sales and project management as it sells to taxi firms nationally and creates a ‘white label’ tech product tailored for individual food, convenience and retail outlets.

One step at a time At the age of just eight, young fundraiser Frances O’Neill is tackling the problem of youth homelessness one step at a time. She set herself a challenge of walking one mile per day for ten days in a bid to raise money for South Yorkshire charity Roundabout. And although she started with a modest fundraising target of just £100, by the time the Oughtibridge Primary School pupil had completed her first five days she had already raised a fantastic £835! “It all started because Frances has been working towards a Brownie Badge about having an impact on your community,” said mum Jess. “Brown Owl asked the girls to think about the charities they would like to support and Frances decided she would like to support children and the homeless. “She couldn’t believe that children could actually be homeless so when she saw the Roundabout website she knew it was the right one to support.” Roundabout Fundraising and Communications Manager Helen Mower commented: “Frances is a brilliant example to us all and proof that there’s no such thing as too young to achieve great things. “We too are very proud of everything Frances is achieving and she can be assured that her fantastic efforts will have a direct impact on the work we are doing with vulnerable young people throughout South Yorkshire.” 26 www.rmcmedia.co.uk

Property developers have submitted detailed plans to Sheffield City Council to construct a new Lidl food store off Lane End in Chapeltown, following the granting of outline planning permission by the authority last year. Sheffield City Council acknowledged that the proposed development would have a positive impact locally by redeveloping a long-standing vacant site, increasing shopping choice, improving access to main food shopping facilities by foot and creating new job opportunities for local people. At the rear of the store a new woodland area will be created which means that the building would be more than ten metres away from the boundary of any existing property on Thorncliffe View. This area will be fenced off from the public, allowed to mature and become a natural woodland. The Planning Application can be viewed in full on the Sheffield City Council website (www.sheffield.gov.uk) under reference number 21/00497/FUL.

Make a will, make a difference Some of Sheffield’s leading law firms are joining forces with St Luke’s Hospice for Will Month 2021. Participating firms for 2021 include Best Solicitors, Coates Solicitors, Graysons, Irwin Mitchell, Keebles, Rosalind Watchorn and Taylor Bracewell. The idea is simple – the participating solicitor of your choice draws up a basic Will in return for a donation to St Luke’s. Suggested minimum donations are £100 for a single will or £150 for a joint Will, with a £75 suggested charge for a basic amendment. EDUCATION

Lockdown learning HOMESCHOOLING YOUR CHILDREN ALONG WITH WORK AND REGULAR HOME LIFE IS NOT AN EASY ASK, BUT IS A ROLE MANY PARENTS HAVE TAKEN IN THEIR STRIDE. t may not sound the most attractive package, but it’s one that millions of us have signed up for. It’s called being a parent through the pandemic. Barely any aspect of everyday life has escaped the impact of the virus. But it has been most widely-felt in our education system, where school closures have threatened to disrupt the future prospects of a generation of children and young adults. And yet the combined response of schools and other organisations has, in true Dunkirk spirit, left the outlook looking not quite so bleak. The schools themselves have in many cases made enormous efforts during the closures to bring classrooms up to the required safety standards, from the now-familiar yellow and black tapes denoting safe distancing areas through to deep-cleaning

I

32 www.rmcmedia.co.uk

the school buildings throughout. It is fortunate indeed that the pandemic didn’t happen 20 or even ten years ago. Back then, home computers were anything but commonplace and access to the internet as we know it just didn’t exist. The fact that schools can now do the bulk of their teaching online has meant that classwork can continue almost as normal. And while it can never replace the real thing, it at least provides some continuity at a time when the effects on the exam system have yet to be determined. Critics of home-schooling argue that children may lack social contact at home, possibly resulting in children having poorer social skills. They also express concern that some parents may not have the skills required to guide and advise their children in life skills and therefore

home-schooling cannot guarantee a comprehensive and neutral education. However, research shows this doesn’t seem to be borne out by the facts. There are many studies that show home-schooled children score better on standardised tests and have equal or more highly-developed social skills. They also participate more in cultural and family activities. In addition, studies suggest that home-schoolers are generally more likely to have higher selfesteem, build deeper friendships, and better relationships with adults. Moreover, they are less susceptible to peer pressure. Most schools reacted swiftly when it became more apparent that closures were imminent. A case in point is Birkdale School in Sheffield, where headteacher Peter Harris led the response to the unprecedented crisis by paving the way for students to work effectively from home.

EDUCATION

“Some of the staff had used the Google Classroom software before but many others were not so familiar with it. So it was clear we had to invest in staff training. We also picked up little tips on how to do things differently along the way, and I would issue regular staff briefings on them – a kind of top tips. “We have managed to timetable largely as normal so the pupils and staff both know what they are doing. We have an assembly as normal and the same lessons with the exception of games/PE. I think it is quite important to have that regular pattern, because once it is in place it’s possible to learn more as we go along. For example we gradually picked up on useful information on using cameras and microphones, how to ask questions in class and submitting home work. “It has been really well-received by pupils and parents. The vast majority of our online lessons are live, so you get that kind of interaction which works very well in class. It’s all about having the same normality as you would in the classroom. It has all meant the pupils are pretty well where they should be in normal circumstances.” Peter says that the experience of the pandemic has convinced Birkdale to retain some element of online classes even after regulations have been lifted. As if to prove every cloud has a silver lining, he points out several unexpected dividends that have emerged during the lockdown school closures. “It has the benefit that there will be no more snow days, although the pupils will probably not see it that way. Even more significantly, if we are teaching internationally or even outside the local Outdoor lessons at Westbourne School

area, it does give us the flexibility to do that.” “There is also the fact that parents’ evenings work far better online. There are no timetabling problems, no queues, nor waiting for teachers to become available and you don’t have the parking problems. And yet parents can get to see the teachers and have a useful conversation.” Rather than waiting for the inevitable, Westbourne School anticipated the first lockdown, with teachers providing homework via Google Classroom, giving pupils time to adjust and staff time to deal with any technical issues before the official lockdown and remote teaching and learning began. It was that early response that allowed the school to be fully prepared, using Google as the platform as all classes went online. Westbourne remained in a strong position to provide robust educational support for all year groups - and when this second lockdown set in, all mechanisms were set in place to ensure as full a curriculum as possible for all year groups. Online provision generally adheres to Westbourne’s regular timetable and curriculum, but the remote teaching timetable has been shaped to allow children to take navigate their remote learning in a healthy and flexible manner. The usual seven lessons have been reduced to five lessons per day. This allows pupils to spend time away from their devices and screens to ensure a healthy work-life balance. The children’s wellbeing and ability to cope is monitored throughout. Speaking of parents, the good news is

that there are plenty of support and learning resources available free of charge online. Among the most useful is the BBC’s Bitesize programme. This pulls hundreds of educational resources together to help with home-schooling and available on television, online or on social media. This is an idea which is likely to find favour with children of all ages, since much of the material is derived from their favourite TV programmes such as Horrible Histories or Celebrity Supply Teacher, but with an educational twist. Up to two hours of these programmes are available for secondary school students as support to the curriculum. Lastly, some parents opt for private tuition, either to augment their child’s general education or to focus on particular subjects he or she might be finding especially difficult. All online private tuition sessions are usually held after school by tutors who are first vetted by an agency. This has opened up opportunities for young people with a flair for teaching, like Oxford science undergraduate Hannah Edwards (pictured), who took it up after swapping Sheffield Girls school for university. “Some younger students come to me utterly frustrated, having convinced themselves they will never make progress in a certain area or subject. But with the sessions being one-on-one, it’s much easier to find the real problem and work on it. They soon grow in confidence,” says Hannah. Hannah can be contacted on Hannah@theedwards.co.uk

Ahead of the game WESTBOURNE’S ONLINE APPROACH ENSURED TEACHING AND LEARNING HAS NEVER STOPPED. n a year of the unexpected, one thing that has never wavered has been Westbourne School’s commitment to providing the best possible education for all its pupils and the mood at Westbourne remains positive at all times. The Westbourne spirit of resilience really did take over as the first national lockdown took hold and the school developed a response that ensured as full an education programme as possible was maintained. Rather than waiting for the inevitable, Westbourne anticipated the first lockdown, with teachers providing homework via Google Classroom, giving pupils time to adjust and staff time to deal with any technical issues before the official lockdown and remote teaching and learning began. It was that early response that allowed the school to be fully prepared, using Google as the platform as all classes went online. Being ahead of the game and Westbourne’s reputation for academic excellence, pastoral care and a commitment to small class sizes led to an increased demand for places at the school. Several children’s first experience of Westbourne involved meeting their classmates and form tutor on a screen! The balance between academic excellence, exercise and pastoral care is core to the Westbourne approach. This was more important than ever as the national education system was rocked and every family and child were faced with restrictions on many of their daily activities. Although there were challenges in terms of giving pupils the opportunity to sit exams, the teaching staff were quick to adapt, providing a full timetable of remote teaching. This placed Westbourne in a strong position to provide robust educational support for all year groups - and when this second lockdown set in, all mechanisms were set in place to ensure as full a curriculum as possible for all year groups. Online provision generally adheres to Westbourne’s regular timetable and

curriculum, but the remote teaching timetable has been shaped to allow children to take navigate their remote learning in a healthy and flexible manner. The usual seven lessons have been reduced to five lessons per day. This allows pupils to spend time away from their devices and screens to ensure a healthy work-life balance. The children’s wellbeing and ability to cope is monitored throughout.

Currently enjoyed by the key worker children, Westbourne continues to offer all pupils the opportunity to enjoy classes in the new Forest School area for outdoor learning and development.

When lockdown eases and children are able to return to the classroom, they will find that facilities continue to improve all the time. The new Garden Studio has created a safe haven and peaceful centre for learning, a tech free and environmentally friendly space for all children and staff which forms part of the Broomhill independent school’s provision for wellbeing.

And perhaps most important of all, Westbourne will be going ahead with an ambitious £3million redevelopment project this year. What the past year has most clearly demonstrated is that Westbourne’s staff and pupils live and breathe the school’s values of excellence and inclusion, respect and resilience. Whatever the future holds, those four words encapsulate everything about Westbourne’s spirit of positivity and an attitude that will help the school to grow and thrive in the years ahead. Bright and bold ENGAGEMENT RINGS ARE NOT JUST LIMITED TO DIAMONDS. PA JEWELLERY LOOKS AT THE POPULARITY OF COLOURED GEMSTONES. lthough diamonds are by far the most popular choice for engagement rings, coloured gemstones are also selected by many couples. There is huge variety available, and you can choose a colour or gem type that has special significance to you. Opting for a coloured gemstone can also be very cost-effective or may give you a bold look that you cannot achieve with a diamond. The most popular coloured gemstone for engagement rings is sapphire, which has a lot to do with Princess Diana’s famous sapphire and diamond cluster, now worn by the Duchess of Cambridge, sparking a trend for this beautiful gem that has passed from one generation to the next. Although mostly thought of as a blue gem, sapphires actually come in all the colours of the rainbow (except red because a ‘red sapphire’ is the gem we know as ruby – both gems are the mineral corundum). A richly saturated, ‘royal’ blue is generally the most

A

38 www.rmcmedia.co.uk

desirable and we often set these into halo or three stone designs for our customers, with diamonds providing additional sparkle. The blue of sapphire is an easy colour to wear (think of blue jeans – they go with everything!) but the shade you choose is really up to you – some of our customers prefer really dark stones while others want something in a pretty, pastel blue. It is worth remembering that diamonds are not popular simply because of advertising and expense; they are also an exceptionally practical choice for a ring that most of us want to wear every day and any other gem type that you choose will wear over time, softening the edges of the facets and scratching the surface, making the gem appear duller. However, some will maintain their brightness more than others and as sapphire is the next hardest natural gemstone it is a great choice. Sapphires are tough and durable, and although they will inevitably become scratched over time, they usually maintain a beautiful appearance for many years.

Before purchasing a coloured gemstone engagement ring (sapphire or otherwise), it is definitely worth consulting an experienced jeweller before making your choice as having more information about the properties of the gem now can help avoid disappointment later. Many coloured gemstones are subject to treatments that enhance their appearance and some of these can negatively impact the durability of the stone, so always check before you buy. You can browse sapphire, and other coloured gemstone, rings on our website, where you can also find more information about a variety of gems in our blog. If you have any questions about gemstone engagement rings email gems@pajewellery.com and one of our gemmologists will be able to help. Life in balance LIGHTERLIFE HELPED SARAH ACHIEVE HER WEIGHT LOSS GOALS – NOW SHE’S HERE TO HELP YOU. ack in 2003, I was overweight, unhappy and a size 20/22, then I came across LighterLife. With over 30 years of research and experience, LighterLife have created effective diet plans that enable you to achieve your weight loss goals, balance your nutrition, and help you live your forever LighterLife. The plan appealed to me as the provided foodpacks replaced all my conventional food, ideal for a busy mum who wanted to lose weight fast. Starting in October 2003, by February of 2004 I was over 6 stone lighter and a size 10/12 – I could not be happier!! During the plan, I attended the free weekly meetings – which I believe was the key to understanding the reasons why I over ate. The meetings were great as they allowed you to look at the ‘whys’ of your overeating, which in turn changes your

B

mindset on how you view food. Goal setting for me was an important part and one of my reasons for losing the weight was to swim with dolphins. I dreamed of being pushed up in the air by the nose of the dolphin but at 15 stone – that was not going to happen. So, after sticking to the plan religiously – even on Christmas Day – I achieved my goal and swam with dolphins, not once

but twice and have the photos and video to prove it. Fast forward to 2021, I am still a size 10/12, still living my LighterLife and now a mentor for LighterLife helping and supporting others in achieving their weight loss goals. From my new premises at Barracks House in Hillsborough, I am able to offer: • Full Mentor Support • Free Weigh-Ins • Free Xpress Meetings Whether you have a lot or a little to lose, LighterLife has a plan for you. I look forward to meeting you soon for a free, no obligation chat, so please get in touch.

HEALTH

Extracting the goodness JUICING IS A QUICK AND EASY WAY OF GIVING THE BODY A SUPER DOSE OF NUTRIENTS. RICHARD ABBEY GETS SOME EXPERT ADVICE ON WHERE TO START. e honest, over the last 12 months or so, have you given thought to what you eat and how much you’re consuming of certain types of foods? Have you been inspired to turn to a plant-based diet or just cut down on the amount of meat you eat? Maybe you’ve cut back on alcohol or tried to increase the amount of fruit and vegetables in your diet.Whatever your choices – and reasons – there’s one unifying theme and that’s taking positive steps to improve your health and wellbeing. As we move into spring there’s no better time to take those positive steps even further by giving yourself a dose of goodness in the form of juicing. Juicing is a process that extracts the juices from fresh fruits and vegetables, usually stripping away most of the solid matter, including the seeds and pulp, from whole fruits and vegetables. This results in a liquid that contains most of the vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants naturally present in the whole fruit or vegetable. “A simple way of describing juicing is that it’s a very quick and easy way of giving the body a super dose of nutrients and goodness in a virtually pre-digested form,” said Nick Ledger, part of UK Juicers, a York-based family business that was one of the first companies to bring specialist juicers for the health enthusiast to the world of online shopping in the UK.They specialise in high quality juicers, blenders, food dryers, sprouters, seeds and

B

46 www.rmcmedia.co.uk

other items for a healthy lifestyle. Juicing is sometimes done to detox but can supplement your current diet. “The benefits are as mentioned as above, you’re giving your body an excellent dose of nutrition. Fresh vegetable juice is packed full of vitamins, minerals and live enzymes,” added Nick. And it’s easy to get started, as Nick explains: “To get started you simply need a fruit and vegetable juicer. We tend to specialise in masticating (or ‘cold press’) juicers. These work at a low speed, gently crushing the produce and giving a nutrient dense juice that minimises oxidation and allows the juice to remain fresh for longer. The slow speed also makes them capable of juicing leafy greens with excellent results.” Juicing methods vary, from squeezing fruit by hand to motor-driven juicers. Two common types of juicers include centrifugal – these juicers grind fruits and vegetables into pulp through a highspeed spinning action with a cutting blade. The spinning also separates the juice from the solids. Cold-press juicers, as mentioned by Nick, crush and press fruits and vegetables much more slowly to obtain as much juice as possible. The nutritional quality of juice obtained from both types of juicers is similar. Once you’ve got your equipment sorted, there are a whole host of recipes to try, including this favourite one from Nick: “A really good introduction to the

benefits of juicing is carrot, apple and ginger. Juice two apples with a 1cm slice of fresh ginger and make up to one pint with carrots. It’s delicious!” Visit www.ukjuicers.com to find out more.

RECIPE: Carrot, Apple & Ginger 8 Medium Carrots 2 Apples (Coxes, Royal Gala or Braeburn) Slice of root Ginger (to taste) Carrot, Apple & Ginger makes a delicious starting point for those who have never tried vegetable juices. It has superb nutritional qualities: carrots are a good source of Vitamin A and Beta Carotenes, providing anti-ageing and cancer-fighting antioxidants. Apples have an abundance of pectin which forms a gel that breaks down toxins in the intestines and helps maintain a healthy bowel function. Ginger is an excellent tonic for the entire digestive system. In fact, Carrot & Apple is a staple drink of the Gerson Institute of Cancer Therapy. This drink can be easily made with any fruit & vegetable juicer. Carrots need to form the majority of the juice otherwise the flavour of the apples will dominate. The ginger provides a nice touch of spice, but use it sparingly - it’s powerful stuff!

WALKING

Walk this way PARKS, GARDENS, WOODLANDS AND MOORLANDS ARE ALL ACCESSIBLE FROM OUR HOMES AND THE PERFECT PLACES TO EXPLORE DURING THIS RESTRICTED TIME. GRAB YOUR WALKING BOOTS AND GET OUTSIDE. hether we’ve been in tiers one, two or three or in full lockdown, walking has been the one constant throughout the whole pandemic. It’s probably formed the largest part of your daily exercise, can be undertaken alone or by the whole family and can be as long or short as you need it to be. If you live in Doncaster, Rotherham or North Nottinghamshire there are plenty of parks, gardens, woodlands and canals to explore, all at a safe distance of course. Welcome to Yorkshire made walking one of their leading campaigns for 2021. Their #Walkshire campaign launched on 1 January with the aim of providing – and showcasing – 365 walks across our glorious region. #Walkshire demonstrates the county’s rich diversity of place, landscapes, people, architecture, heritage, history, economies, attractions and of course food and drink all through the medium of walking with a strong emphasis on inclusion and accessibility with walks planned for all abilities. The largest county in England has a wealth of wonderful walks, from short strolls to hilly hikes, some challenging, others more accessible to all and with three national parks, a breathtaking

coastline, vibrant cities, stunning countryside, rich in heritage, delicious dining, perfectly placed pubs and amazing arts, the top trails will take you on a voyage of discovery through vast open gorgeous green spaces and inspiring inner city strolls. Fantastic for fitness, families, friends, for yourself and your four-legged friends. The Outdoor City is also a great resource for local walks (and much more), whether you live in North Sheffield or elsewhere in the city. They have a number of routes for you to try, from industrial-themed city walks to river and reservoir walks. Like everyone, here at Sixer we’ve caught the walking bug too and have been trying to vary our routes to keep us motivated. With that in mind, here are a selection of walks, for all ages and abilities, if you’re looking for something different (or not so). For longer walks, good, sturdy walking boots are recommended and remember to take some refreshments with you as options can be limited during the current lockdown. Happy rambling! For more walks, visit www.walkshire.com or www.theoutdoorcity.co.uk

Grenoside Woods It’s hard to believe that Grenoside Woods was almost lost to the local community in 2011. Put up for sale, a concerted effort was required to raise the million pounds necessary to ensure this haven of peace and tranquility would continue to be a sanctuary for locals and visitors from further afield alike. Mountain bikers have been enthusiastic fans of Grenoside Woods for years and it has slowly been transformed into an amazing venue for mountain biking, with three dedicated and wellmaintained trails. Don’t think that it’s just restricted to bikes though as the trails are perfect for walking too.

WALKING

River Walks For a city with such a strong association with hills, it’s perhaps worth remembering from time to time the importance of Sheffield’s valleys. For hundreds of years, valleys where rivers such as the Don and the Sheaf flowed were where industry met nature, the former using the latter to drive the city’s productivity. Today, much of the heavy industry which once lined the city’s rivers has gone. We are left with a series of beautiful routes and paths following Sheffield’s waterways, which are still punctuated with fascinating reminders of an industrial past. Of course, heavy Victorian industry took its toll on the city’s rivers, which for many years suffered from bad pollution in places. But for decades a number of groups have been working tirelessly to clean Sheffield rivers. The result is now being seen, with flora and fauna rapidly returning and settling in the areas. In the Rivelin Valley, the path which hugs the river is littered with rusting, crumbling shadows of little mesters workshops and water wheels. Meanwhile there are cafes for refreshments and a water park where children can splash about to their heart’s content in the summer months. There are also two Outdoor City run routes that wind along this picturesque valley. The Upper Don Walk, which starts at Oughtibridge and passes through Hillsborough and Wadsley Bridge, also takes in Kelham Island, home to the gigantic River Don Engine, which lives in the museum and impressively leaps into action twice a day. Sheffield’s Five Weirs walk picks up where the Upper Don Walk stops at Lady’s Bridge, continuing along the river five miles towards Meadowhall. You can also return from Meadowhall via the Sheffield and Tinsley Canal, which completes an eight-mile stretch of waterway known as the ‘Blue Loop’ and brings you back to the Canal Basin at Victoria Quays in the city centre.

Dam Flask Image courtesy Mark Rodgers

Reservoir Routes Located to the northwest of Sheffield, the village of Low Bradfield is surrounded by four reservoirs. The closest of the four are Agden and Damflask, and the village is a great starting point for a picturesque waterside walk round one or the other – or both. Agden means ‘valley of the oak trees’ and the reservoir here was completed in 1869, holding 560 million gallons of water. A circular, anti-clockwise walk around the reservoir is 2.5 miles (which should take around 1 hour 15 minutes), on designated paths, quiet roads and Yorkshire Water permissive paths. While mostly level, the paths are natural trails and can be muddy in wet weather and, in places, uneven with tree roots that can be slippery. There are also a couple of sections where the path climbs above the water line with a drop to the side. From the car park in Low Bradfield, take the path running behind the car park to the stream, following the path over a wooden footbridge and climbing the steps up the other side of the bank. Continue uphill to the road, where you turn left towards Agden dam wall and cross a bridge towards the entrance to the Yorkshire Water permissive path on the left. With the reservoir on your left, follow the path up to a wooden gate and turn left onto a track. Stay on this track until the reservoir turns into a stream

and keep an eye out for a wooden footbridge to the left – it can be difficult to see this path to the bridge, but if you come to a fenced area on your right with a sign for Agden Bog, you’ve gone a little too far. Take the path on the left down to the river, through a gate and across the wooden bridge. Climb gently uphill through woodland until you’re on a high path above the water level – where you’ll be treated to a great view across the reservoir. A signpost will direct you left, back down towards the water level, and the path will eventually emerge onto a road. Turn left here, past the dam wall, and at the road junction follow the sign to the left back to Low Bradfield. For a walk of a similar length that follows a hard-packed easy access path – more suited to pushchairs, wheelchairs and very young children – go for the 3.5 mile (approx. 2 hours) walk around Damflask reservoir to the other side of the village. Or if you’re after something longer (approx. 6 miles), combine a circuit of both Agden and Damflask reservoirs. For more information on walks in the area and route maps, visit the excellent Bradfield – Walkers are Welcome site. After the walk, enjoy the choice refreshments on offer in the village at the likes of The Schoolrooms or The Plough, or take a short drive out to the famous Our Cow Molly ice cream parlour.

If you decide to take on any of these walks, send us some pictures and we’ll include them in the next issue of Sixer. Email them to richard.abbey@rmcmedia.co.uk

WINE

Wines to change your mind SUPERMARKET WINES: DISCOVERING OUTSTANDING YET AFFORDABLE WINE. BY JAMIE GREEN. ost of us are guilty of finding something we like and sticking to it. Working in restaurants for several years, a staggering number of guests would blindly order Sauvignon Blanc or Merlot, without even looking at the menu. Unfortunately, the more familiar options fill most of the space on supermarket shelves, so the cycle continues. It doesn’t take much extra browsing down the wine aisle to find something interesting and different, whether it’s a favourite variety but from a lesser-known wine country, or a variety that you’ve never heard of. Understandably it can be daunting, so we’ve selected some options to ease you into branching out from the same old comfortable choices.

M

Supermarket Wines’ Selection:

Beaujolais 2019 | Gamay | Beaujolais, France | M&S, £8 The perception is that red wine should be drank at room temperature. Rosé wine is drunk cold however, and that is essentially a very light style of red wine. Some red wines such as Gamay, Pinot Noir or even a Merlot can be drank at a cooler temperature, but not quite as cold as rosé or white wine. This Beaujolais is fresh and juicy with flavours of cherries and redcurrants. The low tannins and the mouth-watering, unoaked nature of the wine makes it perfect for chilled drinking.

S&J’s PANTRY Traditional, Local, Artisan, & Fairly Traded Produce

Lyme Bay 2019 | Bacchus & Pinot Blanc blend | Devon, UK | Aldi, £7.99 Here in the UK, we can produce a beautiful selection of wines. The UK is winning awards for sparkling wines around the world, but still wines won’t be far behind. This Lyme Bay wine is produced in Devon. This dry white focusses itself around England’s signature grape, Bacchus. This grape is naturally high in acidity. The wine is balanced by Pinot Blanc, which brings crisp green apple, lime zest, and melon which results in a refreshing drop. Bacchus is England’s answer to New Zealand’s Sauvignon Blanc. However, this particular wine is more complex.

BEER

Winter warmers VISIONARY BREWMASTER HELP YOU SHAKE OFF THAT WINTRY CHILL. ith the recent cold and snowy weather and the restrictions still in place it’s been great to see so many still getting out for their daily walks and exercise. We ourselves have still been getting out for some much needed fresh air and there’s not much else better than rewarding a long walk or exhausting run with a beer when you get home! Most beer is seen as something to enjoy in the sun or at a beach/ BBQ, providing a refreshing respite through the crisp bubbles of a lager, however there are many beers to specifically enjoy during the colder winter months as well. We’re not saying drinking beer, or any alcohol warms you up, quite the opposite, with them only making you feel warmer and actually lowering the core temperature of the body. Instead we’d like to get you thinking more about your beer preferences during this colder time of the year. These include old ales and mild ales that have been brewed during the winter months and bitter beers which have as much complexity as a strong, malty stout and are just as good at helping you shake off that wintry chill. However, if it is something warm you’re looking for and a steamy hot chocolate or Yorkshire Tea won’t do the job, malt-driven beers, amber ales, Scotch ales, English ESBs, Belgian doubles, and some low bitterness chocolate stouts will be your best choices of beer to heat up and enjoy differently, it’s not for everyone but definitely worth a try!

Visionary Brewmaster’s picks for March: ABBEYDALE BREWERY Abbeydale are a great and well-known brewery that started up in 1996. The brewery prides theirselves on blending ‘creativity and innovation with heritage and tradition’ showcasing these values within their beers. Abbeydale Brewery state: “Our house style could typically be described as pale and hoppy, but that’s not all we can do”, as well as “We truly believe in the power of beer as a mechanism to bring people together”, a great belief that we strongly agree and follow as well! 2021 is an incredible milestone for the brewery with them celebrating their silver 25 years anniversary, which will be acknowledged through a series of anniversary beers, all marked with a special commemorative logo. The brewery also offer a wide range of vegan beers to ensure their beers can be consumed by all those who would like to try them. TWO OF OUR FAVOURITES: Huckster Cryo Neipa 6% New England IPA offers some great flavours and with the added Cryo hops the beer becomes brilliantly bitter with fantastic fruity bursts throughout. What makes this beer special is it heads up the range of great drinks enjoyed at the popular Peddlers Market in Kelham Island. Peddlers is enjoyed by many locals, including ourselves, who have attended the monthly event numerous times – we can’t wait for it to be back!!! The artwork and design of the can is also special with Abbeydale Brewery partnering up with Jim Spendlove, a Sheffield-based illustrator that has created the beautiful design for the label that the beer deserves. Moonshine, Pale Ale 4.3% We’ve all been waiting for Sheffield’s favourite cask pale ale since 1996 to come in a can. And here we are – Moonshine! A true classic and one that many will be aware of and enjoyed. Produced when the brewery first started up back in 1996 the ale has an extraordinary floral aroma, an effortless body and a delicate, predominantly citrus taste, with sweet pine, grapefruit and lemon flavours, followed by a bitter but refreshing finish. Abbeydale have numerous awardwinning beers with Moonshine being a multi-award-winner and Bronze medalwinning Golden Ale at the Champion Beer of Britain Awards 2018.
