ere’s another slice of life from the old days courtesy of our old friend, Barry Couldwell. The mode of transport and rustic scene suggests a longvanished era so can any Sixer readers tell us where and when this photograph was taken? Last month’s Do You Remember excited many Sixer readers including Terry Robinson who recognised the view of OUGHTY BRIDGE station in Oughtibridge. “When this picture was taken, who would have imagined that this bridge would see the cyclists in the 2014 Tour de France pass over it as they climbed the (now famous) Cote d'Oughtibridge, or indeed be a viewpoint for thousands of spectators watching the race,” says Terry. “When looking at the picture, the building on the extreme right with the fancy finial, level with the row of

railway employees, was the original station building. The remains of this has now been incorporated into a modern bungalow. “The canopied station building beyond the people replaced the original station, but has now been demolished and no trace remains... there are still traces of the platforms, which can best be seen from the bridge, but great care is needed as the road narrows at this point.” Another Sixer reader, John Quick, informs us that the photo was taken in around 1905.

MAESTRO CLASS How does a village music festival attract some of the best classical performers in the world?

or one week each summer, a quaint North Sheffield village transforms into a bustling hub for classical musicians, composers, singers and the hundreds of people who come to see them perform. The reason? Bradfield Festival of Music, the history of which can be traced back to the early 19th century. Since its modern revival in 1998, the week-long event has welcomed thousands of classical music enthusiasts Words: Stephanie Burns from across the country. From Saturday 20 to Saturday 27 June this year, the medieval Grade I listed Parish Church of St Nicholas in High Bradfield will once again provide a spectacular setting for the festival, with world-class acts making the most of Ella the 900-year old Taylor building’s excellent acoustics. “It’s a unique setting with a unique sound,” says festival secretary

Keith Hoyland. “We don’t use any amplification so all you hear is pure sound with the acoustics of the church. Our president Julian Lloyd Webber always says there’s nowhere better on earth to play when the church is full.” For the past two years, an impressive 90 per cent turnout has ensured the 300-strong audiences at each of the seven concerts enjoy this optimum sound. The intimate venue, where artists play just a couple of feet from the front row, enhances the atmosphere even further and people often comment on how wonderful it is to experience the performances away from vast concert halls. It’s little wonder, then, that the festival continues to go from strength to strength. What began as a platform for local and amateur musicians has grown greatly in confidence and now features the industry’s internationally acclaimed stars. Having established good contacts with renowned music agents, and pitching years in advance for top performers, the festival organisers are able to secure some truly outstanding acts. “Sometimes people don’t believe that we get the artists we get – especially Classic Brit Awards winners who we have year by year,” says Keith proudly. “Julian works as a talent spotter and gives me an early heads-up about people who are likely to be coming into the limelight – those who are at the start of their career and making leaps and bounds into the classical music industry. “We’ve already booked most of our artists for 2016 and 2017 and my favourite part of the festival is trying to introduce new artists to Sheffield as many have never been to the area before.” It’s this kind of thinking that sees artists such as Romanian/Nigerian pianist Rebeca Omordia (Justin’s

recommendation for this year) grace the programme. For the first time, she’ll be performing alongside the 2013 Classical Brit Awards Breakthrough Artist of the Year, Australian saxophonist Amy Dickson, in a partnership created especially for the Bradfield festival. While the organisers aim to introduce new genres of music to entice even more people to the festival, some acts are so popular there is demand for them to return. As a result, 4Girls 4Harps, who played the festival in 2012, will take to the stage once again alongside Sheffield soprano Ella Taylor this year. Everyone who attends the festival receives a complimentary 20page brochure that details all events taking place through the week. It also includes a sneaky peak of what to expect next year so regular attendees can start discussing their favourites before the current event has even finished. “Our regular followers give us hints about who they want to see and we always try to follow up these recommendations,” says Keith. “We’ve developed our own little festival community over the years and people from all over the UK come for a week’s holiday so we have to put on a good show.” To maintain the high standards, great teamwork is essential in the smooth running and success of the festival and they’re always looking for new volunteers to come on board. IN THE HOT SEAT Amy Garcia speaks to Stephanie Burns about life on the Look North sofa – and how balancing a demanding television career with a young family is no easy task. atched by 2.5million people each week, BBC Look North is held dearly in the hearts of Yorkshire folk. So finding a new presenter to reignite the on-air chemistry that Harry Gration shared with his former sofa buddy, Christa Ackroyd, was undoubtedly a tall order. But 33-year-old Amy Garcia – who took up the role in November 2013 – has a winning combination of warmth and genuine charm that has been gladly welcomed each evening by the show’s loyal viewers. Having grown up in Wakefield and studied media and performing arts at the local college, Amy embarked on a sixmonth stint as a cruise ship singer before, at the age of 19, venturing into children’s television. Staying in the genre for three years, she worked for S Club TV, CBBC and the Disney Channel and then side-stepped into light entertainment shows on Sky. At 27, she decided to travel in a different direction and enrolled at Goldsmiths College in London for an MA in journalism – a qualification that opened up a new world of opportunity. Three years after making her first appearance on the Look North sofa – presenting different bulletins as well as working behind the scenes on production – she secured a presenter/reporter role on BBC South Today and presented BBC3’s 60 Seconds news bulletins. In early 2013, she left to take up maternity leave and it wasn’t until the call came from Look North that she was propelled back into the spotlight – and back up to her beloved home county. Amy met her husband Tim, a Yorkshire-born songwriter and producer, 12 years ago in Brown’s bar, Leeds. But it wasn’t until the following year, when they bumped into each other in a music studio in London, that they really hit it off. The rest, as they say, is history. Their two-year-old daughter now kisses the screen when she sees her mum on television and even shouts out the names of Harry and weatherman Paul Hudson. So how does the glamorous presenter – who is fast becoming a Yorkshire sweetheart – juggle the pressure of such a demanding role with the reality of early motherhood? And just how did she survive the gruelling Tour de France Yorkshire Grand Depart route on the back of that tandem? I caught up with Amy during a late-evening shift to find out.

You’ve been on the sofa for over a year now, how are you finding it so far? I am absolutely loving it and feel like I’m in a bit of a rhythm now. The first six months were just terrifying and then I had the tandem bike ride thrown into the mix. But it’s a really lovely team and there is such a variation every day.

It is a really big role to take on, were you nervous? Yes, it was a huge pressure. There were big shoes to fill and Look North has a massive audience, but I tried to push that to the back of my mind otherwise I’d have been a nervous wreck every night. How are you balancing a career and motherhood? I’m always juggling lots of balls but I’m lucky that I have very supportive parents and in-laws. Without them, I don’t think I’d be able to do the job. I also have a very supportive husband and, between the three of them, they look after Mabel while I’m at work and they do a great job. Mabel had just turned eight months when I came back to work so I felt like it was a little bit early to be leaving her. It was a bit of a shock to the system as we had six weeks to find a house and get everything sorted. As any new mum will know, your mind just goes to mush when you have children – for at least the first year – so it was terrifying not just going back into work and easing myself into it gently like most do, but being on live TV four nights a week. Was there anything that surprised you about the job? There are lots of added extras. I get invited to open fairs and do talks at schools, which is really nice. Sometimes it’s really hard to say no to things so you find yourself running around ragged doing everything. But it’s really lovely to be part of the community and see what amazing work some people do. What is your favourite part of the job? Meeting different people is the best part and the variation is great as it’s just different all the time. Have there ever been any on-air disasters or blips that have got your heart pumping? Oh all the time – gosh there are so many mishaps that I probably couldn’t name them all but they play out on screen I think. You’ve got to be open and honest about it and I think the audience thanks you for that rather than trying to pretend nothing’s happened. Do you have any unfulfilled career ambitions? I’d quite like to travel a bit more with work. Harry went to Afghanistan recently and that was such an amazing trip; I was quite envious. Is there anyone who has particularly inspired you? Harry definitely has because he’s a bit of an institution. He’s got a real knack for doing both serious and soft news. I think Sophie

Raworth’s great too. She used to work for Look North and she’s someone that I saw as a bit of a role model. What do you like most about being back in Yorkshire after a ten-year spell down south? You know where you are with Yorkshire folk; they don’t dilly dally around the subject. What you see is what you get and I love that because that’s what I’m all about as well. You must be recognised fairly often. How are you greeted by the Yorkshire folk? Well to begin with it was ‘ooh didn’t you do well on that tandem’ or ‘I hope you’re looking after Harry’. When I’m out and about, I’m with my little girl so I look very different as I’m in my mum get-up. A few people have said ‘do you know you look just like Amy Garcia off Look North, has anyone ever told you that before?’ I’m like ‘erm a few people, yes!’ How did you prepare for the Tour de France challenge? We did about six weeks’ training together and on our own. But I don’t think anything can really train you for that amount of cycling so it was just a case of trying to get a few miles under our belts. How did you keep yourself going when it was really tough? The audience was just brilliant; so many people came out to cheer us on. We had moments when we wanted to get off the blummin’ bike but there were crowds of people who’d been waiting in the rain for an hour to see us so we just had to keep going. The fact that we were raising money for BBC Sport Relief as well gave us a great incentive. Was there a specific high and a specific low? Oh yeah. The low was probably Holme Moss – that was just a killer. Apart from the fantastic crowds, Buttertubbs was a high because that was the first big hill. It was on the second day and we were both really worried about it but we made it up there without too much of a problem. The tandem is a big achievement in your Look North career – what would you say is the biggest achievement in your life so far? My daughter, definitely. That sounds really soppy doesn’t it? To be honest, I feel like I’ve got everything – I’ve got a dream job, the most gorgeous, supportive husband and a healthy, beautiful baby girl. I feel like I’ve won the lottery. BITS& PIECES Road safety ‘Oscars’ a success School children from across South Yorkshire dressed to impress for the road safety ‘Oscars’ held recently at Sheffield City Hall. Local celebrities from the world of music, television and dance attended the ceremony to perform and present the awards. The Chuckle Brothers acted as master of ceremonies and Teenstar 2013 winner and X Factor finalist, Luke Friend, performed and met the winners. The South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership funded the initiative to encourage peer-topeer road safety education in secondary schools. Students devised a piece of theatre in education incorporating a range of key road safety messages. They watched their film productions at the event and the winning schools were presented with prizes. Cutting gesture A 29-year-old woman from Malin Bridge has made a hair-raising decision to shave off her hair to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support. Paula Staniland raised £2164.44 after having her head shaved. Paula had set herself a £1,000 target and was delighted when Lloyds, who get involved with a different charity each month, promised to double whatever Paula made bringing the current total to £2164.44 with more donations still to come. Over the next two years Macmillan has committed to spending £2million in South Yorkshire to develop a range of new cancer services to support patients and families affected by cancer. These include an end of life care project team based across Sheffield hospitals and in care homes who will support and care for patients, plus a 1-2-1 support nurse who will support colorectal and breast cancer patients who have been discharged following treatment. Face-off for charity A man who lost his brother in a house fire as a child has chosen to support The Children’s Hospital Charity with an annual community ice hockey tournament. UK Forum All Stars, which brings together avid ice hockey fans – many of whom have never played the game – from across Britain to play an annual tournament, supports a selection of local and national charities each year. David Grant, founder of UK Forum All Stars, decided to include the charity in the annual tournament to give something back to the hospital that saved his life. At the 2014 tournament, The Children’s Hospital Charity All Stars team raised £4,828.92, which will go towards the charity’s Make it Better appeal. The appeal aims to raise £10million regionally by 2016 to build a new wing of the hospital. The UK Forum All Stars ice hockey tournament will take place at Ice Sheffield on 24-26 July.

MP visits Oughtibridge school Angela Smith, MP for Penistone and Stocksbridge, visited Oughtibridge Primary School to look at how the school is being expanded in order to accommodate the children in the catchment area. Angela toured the school with headteacher Pat Munt and chair of governors Dave Cates. Angela looked at the proposed site for the expansion and listened to their concerns about the lack of dining provision for the increase in pupil numbers from September.

Local church hosts annual festival 12-14 June will be the weekend of the annual Wadsley Arts Festival – but this year will be bigger and better than ever before. Wadsley Parish Church is hosting the event, on Worrall Road, to put Wadsley back on the map. There will be a packed programme set to entertain and inspire with a variety of arts and activities. There will be a variety of artwork on display including sculptures, glass work and watercolours. Sheffield artist exhibitions include Jason Heppenstall, Simon Kent, Philip Palmer, Dee Smith and Robin Garside. The programme will also include circus acts, live art demonstrations, dance performances, drama sessions, jewellery making, live music, pop-up cinema, food, graveyard tour and poetry readings. There will be plenty of activities to entertain the children with games and a charity raffle. Celebrating reading at Oughtibridge Primary School As part of Book Week, Oughtibridge Primary School invited Andy Cope to the school. Andy, author of the children’s Spy Pup series of books and the Art of Being Brilliant, set the children a writing challenge after talking to the school about being a writer. Andy brought Star, his pet border collie, on the visit so that the children could meet the inspiration behind his Spy Pup stories. There was a whole week dedicated to reading and each phase studied a different book – Robin Hood in FS2, The BFG in Y1/2, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in Y3/4 and Harry Potter in Y5/6. The week included written stories, a travelling book fair, visits from parents and ended with the children dressing up as a character from the book they were studying.

CKB understand that not everybody can afford top to bottom renovations at this moment in time so are more than happy to work on anything from replacing a single kitchen unit upwards. “I can do eight metres of worktop and a new sink and tap for £950 or a whole kitchen or bedroom – so people can have whatever they can budget for,” said Scott. “And if you have your own electrician or plumber that you would like to use then you are more than welcome to do so. We will do as little or as much as you wish.” A feature of CKB which sets it apart from many of its competitors is that it manufactures everything on site, giving it a bespoke service. This means it can cater to any needs or desires. Scott employs a close team of dedicated workers including a registered electrician, and plumber, as well as qualified plasterer, brick layers and window fitters, who are all contracted to CKB. Gloss doors particularly in white and cream are in vogue at the current time. This gives a room a fresh appearance and Scott has seen requests for this design boom.
